00:36It is quite a long time for the position of the U.S. ambassador to South Korea to be vacant.
00:42I would say that there's one thing, we've been hearing names over the past year of potential candidates,
00:48but there's one thing I noticed about Michelle Steele, and that is that she wrote an opinion piece
00:54in January, so just a few months ago, that was very, very supportive of President Trump.
01:01She called him the president of peace and gave him credit for resolving eight world wars or conflicts around the
01:10world.
01:10And so there is no better vote of confidence for President Trump than somebody who is loyal to him.
01:17So that may have been one reason that put her ahead of the pack in terms of candidates for the
01:24role of U.S. ambassador to South Korea.
01:32I think the most important thing for the relationship between South Korea and the United States is that ability to
01:41build trust,
01:41the ability to call people in the inner circle, even if she's not in the inner circle herself.
01:48So hopefully this new ambassador, if she is confirmed and if she makes it to Seoul,
01:55will have those close connections to people who are very close to Trump, if not to President Trump himself.
02:07You know, Michelle Steele has an interesting background.
02:09She has said quite often that she comes from a history, a family history of parents who left North Korea
02:18and that she was the child of people who fled communism.
02:22So that part of her history will certainly be an interesting element in the relationship with North Korea vis-à
02:31-vis President Trump.
02:33But I think the most important thing for her is to show her loyalty to President Trump.
02:42I think, first and foremost, having a U.S. ambassador in place is significant.
02:50It sends a message when you don't have somebody in that position in place in South Korea.
02:56South Korea is such an important ally to the United States and such an important partner,
03:02not only in the region, but globally, across so many sectors.
