What led to Cade Povich's strong start against the Giants Sunday? He's made some tweaks to his arsenal, including a new look fastball. Kyle Goon shared his thoughts on what this outing could do for Povich moving forward
Transcript
00:00Birds take two out of three from the Giants over the weekend.
00:03Oriole Park Cannon Yards now tied for first in the American League East
00:06because everybody else is just as mediocre as the Orioles are.
00:09But the Orioles might be a little more banged up than everybody,
00:12and here to talk about that and more from the Baltimore Banner,
00:15he's on the Window Nation guest hotline.
00:17Let's welcome back to the program Kyle Goon.
00:19Kyle, what is up?
00:22Hey, how you guys doing?
00:23Doing all right.
00:24We'll start with Tyler O'Neal because Friday's in the lineup,
00:29and, you know, I was there at Albee's press conference,
00:34and you were there as well, and, you know, Tyler O'Neal was ready to rock and roll,
00:38then we got to scratch right before first pitch.
00:42So for people that may not have read the story, Kyle,
00:45what the hell happened to Muscles O'Neal over the weekend,
00:47which has placed him on the concussion protocol list here?
00:52Yeah, the story the Orioles have said is that he got dehydrated
00:58during the off day and fainted and concussed himself.
01:06I don't know about you.
01:07I have more questions about that.
01:09I was not there yesterday when they're explaining the genesis of Tyler O'Neal
01:14on the short-term IL.
01:16Well, it's a really weird-sounding story, but, you know, I don't know.
01:25I mean, I think that the initial sort of suggestion was that he was under the weather
01:30on Friday, as you mentioned, when he got scratched,
01:33and then, yeah, now we have a more complete picture.
01:37So I would love to hear what Tyler says about how he got so dehydrated
01:43that he passed out and concussed himself.
01:49Yeah.
01:52I don't know what more to say.
01:53Yeah, yeah.
01:54I mean, not to make a pun out of it.
01:56It's like too much, but it is a weird story.
01:58I think we can all acknowledge it's a very odd story.
02:02Yeah.
02:02It came out of left field, if you will, no doubt about that.
02:06But Adley Rutschman as well.
02:09This one might not be as severe and maybe not as convoluted as what's going on
02:14with Tyler O'Neal, but they're also kind of surprising, though,
02:17because it looked like all systems go for him,
02:19and then all of a sudden the ankle kind of arose out of nowhere, too.
02:24Yeah, and that one was, you know, I think base running was the explanation given.
02:30And that makes more sense to me because Adley's been getting on base.
02:35I'll tell you what, it's been really good.
02:38One of the highs of this season has been to see Adley kind of just get back to
02:44the Adley Rutschman that we saw when he first dropped in 2022, 2023,
02:49when he was an all-star.
02:52He just looks happier, better, hitting better.
02:57You know, on Friday night's game against the Giants, he had a double.
03:01You could just see the crowd responding to him kind of just getting back in the
03:06swing of things and being the producer at the plate that we knew he could be
03:11because we've seen it before.
03:13Too bad that he's kind of getting laid up with this ankle soreness, whatever it is.
03:18But it has not sounded serious from what people have said about it.
03:22Kyle Goon, Baltimore Banner, Vinny and Haiti, 105.7 The Fan.
03:25Talk about the Orioles tied for first in the American League East after taking two
03:29out of three from the Giants over the weekend.
03:316-2 yesterday behind Cade Povich.
03:34Now, it looks like, Kyle, that Dean Kramer's going to start tonight as there's a need
03:39for a starting pitcher.
03:40Zach Epplin is done for the season.
03:42But let's talk about Cade Povich, his performance yesterday.
03:46Saved them in Pittsburgh after, you know, Bassett got clobbered.
03:49But, you know, gave them five-plus, gave up the home and the crews, but is what it is.
03:53But yesterday, as dominant as we've ever seen him.
03:56So how does Craig Albernez, Mike Elias, how do they kind of navigate this rotation
04:02now that Dean Kramer's back and with Povich throwing the way that he's throwing so far?
04:07Yeah, I mean, we'll see.
04:09I think before the season, even though Cade, he really finished the season last year
04:16pitching pretty well.
04:18I don't know if I quite bought that, and I think I saw him more as sort of like a
04:23long
04:24reliever type, if he was going to contribute to this year's roster just because the pitching
04:28rotation did seem deep.
04:30Now it's not so deep.
04:32And, you know, Kyle Braddish has had a few issues here and there, and you kind of have
04:37some questions about, you know, in his starts, the velocity really dips in, you know, the
04:42third, fourth inning.
04:42Um, I kind of wonder if there won't be some sort of natural hole or if, you know, Craig
04:50maybe sometime in the coming months, if they're trying to limit Braddish's innings, um, they're
04:57trying to limit anyone else.
04:59Maybe Cade Povich becomes six man in this rotation and they go to a six man rotation
05:05completely.
05:06So, um, I'm not sure.
05:08I mean, I think it has a lot to do with how Braddish is doing, how they feel his arm
05:12is
05:12holding up.
05:13I don't think they want to push him to over the limit this year.
05:18Um, and, you know, hopefully keep him fresh for what they hope is a long run on October.
05:22Um, but you might need a six man to do it.
05:25And I'll tell you what, that Cade, whatever he did with his basketball that has made it
05:29a more dominant pitch this year.
05:31Um, it's really working for him.
05:33And, uh, I've, I've been really impressed and surprised by how he's come off the off season.
05:38Hey Kyle, talk about Gunnar Henderson.
05:40I mean, defensively, he looks outstanding, you know, I would tell Mayo, Hey, let him
05:45take as many balls as he can get to, because it's going to be an out.
05:49I mean, he showed a gun yesterday and then he steals bases.
05:52He hits home runs.
05:53I mean, he's playing, he's probably playing as good as anybody right now.
05:59Yeah.
05:59It was funny when we did predictions for the season, it was sort of like, okay, who's
06:03your most valuable Oriole?
06:05You think of the 2026 season, I'm sort of like, Hey, did we forget?
06:09Like we got an MVP caliber shortstop on the field.
06:14I mean, that guy has been the best Oriole for a while.
06:20And I just think when he has the power that he's shown, I mean, I believe if this is still
06:26correct, he's outpacing, not just all his teammates with home runs, but I think he has
06:31more home runs than the rest of the team combined right now.
06:36And he is, he is just showing that power that we saw two seasons ago when he was in
06:42the MVP race.
06:43Um, and I just had a lot of confidence that once his shoulder issue was fixed, we'd see
06:50the old player that, that we knew.
06:53Um, but that was really the one hole that was missing from his game last year.
06:57It was just being able to drive it over the wall.
07:00And if he can have, you know, 30 home run neighborhood, maybe more, I think we're going to see him
07:07in, you know, the top 10 MVP finishers.
07:10I, I never had a doubt, to be honest.
07:12Kyle, talk about this.
07:14It seems like Jackson holiday is having some struggles, you know, down in Norfolk.
07:18He's striking out a lot.
07:19You know, he's batting what?
07:20One 67.
07:21He was over four or five last night.
07:24Uh, is it going to be more of an extended stay?
07:29Um, you know, I, I don't know.
07:32Cause I mean, nobody is really batting that well.
07:37I mean, I know blaze Alexander has had a good start in the infield, but Jeremiah Jackson has
07:43had kind of ups and downs.
07:44Kobe Mayo, obviously not doing well.
07:47Um, I just think even if he's not, you know, a hundred percent ready, there might be a push
07:54to try and get him up.
07:55I mean, it sounds like based on what he's told other reporters down there in Norfolk,
07:59that he's still just dealing with either sensations in his hand, getting the feeling.
08:06I mean, you know, I know, I know you're talking at one point about your kid, Vinny, and how
08:11he had his hand at bone removed.
08:13And I think just with batting, it's a little bit more of a precision discipline, right?
08:20I mean, it's, you have to be a little bit more, um, timed up on certain moments and put
08:27your power into the bat in a way that really challenges that area.
08:33I think, and you know, I mean, Jackson, this is his first significant injury that he's
08:40had in this organization, um, really where he's missed this much time.
08:44And you probably have to change some mechanical things.
08:47And I'm not really that surprised that it's taking a little longer than people would have
08:51thought.
08:52Um, you know, Jackson's still a young player.
08:54Um, we, we kind of forget that.
08:56I mean, he's still what 22 and this is his first big setback and I wouldn't be surprised
09:03that the Orioles move on up a little bit faster than you might think based on what he's doing
09:07in Norfolk.
09:08Cause really none of the infielders except Gunner are having a great time at the plate right
09:13now.
09:14Kyle Goon, Baltimore banner, Vinny and 80, one of five, seven of the fan, by the way, Kyle,
09:18the Orioles have 12 home runs.
09:19Uh, Gunner has six of them.
09:21So yes, he has matched the production of his teammates there.
09:25Our Orioles take it on the Diamondbacks coming up tonight.
09:27Kyle, we appreciate the time as always.
09:28Enjoy the rest of your Monday and we'll catch up with you soon.
09:32Thanks for having me.
