Rob Long and Jeremy Conn discuss the Orioles' impressive comeback win over the Diamondbacks, fueled by a multi-home run game from Jeremiah Jackson. They evaluate Baltimore's roster depth and compare it to recent years.
Transcript
00:00That's Jeremiah Jackson. Last night batted in the eight hole, went three for four, two home runs, and as I
00:07told him, last night he became a member of the Jackson Five. Five RBI. What a great night by him.
00:13So, real quick, before we get into that, once you hear him talk, you've been around the team long enough,
00:17do you recognize everybody's voice?
00:19I recognize his.
00:20Okay, because that's something where whenever Joe plays a clip, more times than not, I feel like I know who
00:25it is.
00:25Right, you didn't know him.
00:26I didn't know that one, no. Again, maybe if...
00:29He doesn't get too much post-game sound. Last night, that was post-game sound.
00:32You know, he doesn't do too many heroic things to get interviewed as much as some of the others.
00:36Yeah, but again, it's just a matter of, like, you see the guys that come into this team and then
00:41leave.
00:41Somebody, I think it was our buddy Mike Fass, sent me.
00:45Here it is. Jeremiah Jackson has 17 bases and is hitting 583 in his last three games.
00:50Yeah, put him in the lineup.
00:52And that goes to what we're talking about, the depth.
00:55This is a guy that we questioned would make the Major League roster out of spring training.
00:58In fact, I think if everybody's healthy, if Westberg's healthy and Jackson Holliday's healthy, I don't see a spot for
01:08him on his team.
01:10Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's kind of where we were at the beginning of the year.
01:13Even a couple of days ago, or last week we were talking about it, when Jackson comes back, we talked
01:17a little bit about it yesterday.
01:18Who's the odd man out? And his name came up.
01:21If you go back and look at the last three days, you'd probably think someone was crazy for saying...
01:24You must have been listening to us.
01:25Yeah, me? All right.
01:27Y'all talking about me? Y'all must have forgot.
01:29We got both of them. Call them Jackson and Blackson.
01:32Yeah. Which one's which?
01:34Oh, you're not.
01:37My buddy Mike called him Blackson.
01:42Well, I mean, you got to like the way, and again, what he said, it was a team win.
01:46And seeing the guys, it's that healthy competition that we talk about.
01:50It's not wanting someone to fail so, you know, you get a leg up.
01:54It's everybody rooting for everybody, even though you're still competing against them.
01:59Exactly. Because by everybody getting better means your team is getting better.
02:04Everybody being productive means your team...
02:06The depth... Remember, Blaze Alexander wasn't supposed to be an everyday player.
02:10No.
02:11He's not playing everyday, but close to it.
02:14That depth is just...
02:16The pitching staff.
02:18You know, Albert Suarez wasn't on his team at the beginning of the season.
02:21Dean Kramer, because of the crowd, was too crowded in the rotation.
02:26Cade Povich.
02:27Cade Povich. The list goes on and on, man.
02:29I mean, about guys who were coming into this and helping out in times of need.
02:34I would go over to say Rico Garcia is part of the depth.
02:36Because we knew what he did last year, but we didn't know he was going to come back
02:41with reckless abandon like he is now.
02:43He's still... I'm not going to say what he hasn't done yet, but you know what he hasn't done yet.
02:48You look in the bullpen, the kid Anthony Nunez.
02:51Where did he come from?
02:52That was an outfield or third baseman in college.
02:55Was that the trade with the Blue Jays?
02:57Or the Mets.
02:58The Mets.
02:58Because I told you at the beginning of the year, Mets fans are going,
03:01we gave up that live arm for Seth Mullins?
03:04That's what happened?
03:05Yeah.
03:05So, I mean, it's just tremendous that they are demonstrating the depth.
03:10Dustin just texted me saying, at some point, you got to give Mike Elias some credit
03:14because he's finding success in these hidden gems.
03:19You know these first-round draft picks, what they're going to do.
03:22But Elias is finding these hidden gems who are producing on his baseball team.
03:26Yeah.
03:27And again, like, you go back to it.
03:29Look, he gets criticized all the time.
03:31I even see people criticize him for calling up Kramer after Povich had a good start.
03:35And it's like, guys, what are we doing?
03:37I mean, you know how this whole game works.
03:39You know who has options.
03:41Somebody was like, well, why would you send Povich down?
03:43Do you want to send one of the bullpen arms down, which you could use in the next couple
03:47days, where you're not going to use Povich?
03:49I mean, it just makes sense.
03:51And it is a good problem to have to have this much pitching.
03:54Mike in Baltimore.
03:55What's up, Mike?
03:57Hey, how y'all doing this morning?
03:58Oh, well.
03:59Well, I mean, that was a good comeback win, man.
04:02I was kind of like drawing in the towel again.
04:05But, yeah, that was a good comeback.
04:07I'm glad to see drama out here as well.
04:09Now, but, man, it's like the injury bugaboo, man.
04:13When I seen Albinos get hit, I'm like, oh, no, here we go again.
04:17You know, Mountcastle breaking his foot the other day.
04:19And I'm like, God, I hope we don't continue to have these little freak injuries.
04:24But it was a good comeback.
04:26But, Jeremy, can you promise me one thing, man?
04:28Please don't start with that stack and W stuff.
04:30Because when I hear that, I think of Harbaugh.
04:32And I really don't want to think no more Harbaugh.
04:34But that stack and W, don't say that no more, Jeremy, please.
04:38That's a sports reference.
04:40That has nothing to do with Harbaugh.
04:41I don't care if Harbaugh said it.
04:42I've been saying it before then.
04:44Yeah, I've been saying stacking Ws as a coach for 24 years.
04:46That has nothing to do with Harbaugh.
04:47And it makes more sense in a season that you have 162 games to say it than in a football
04:51season.
04:52But it still adds up.
04:53Mike said he was throwing in a towel.
04:54You can text Jeremy Allen right now.
04:56I told him.
04:57They're going to win this game.
04:58Yeah.
04:58They're going to win this game.
04:59He texted me and said they could.
05:01They might.
05:02They're still in it.
05:03I said, no, dude.
05:03They're going to win this game.
05:04It's just when you score that early on them,
05:09and when you realize, well, they haven't done anything yet.
05:12It's too early to throw in a towel.
05:15If it's 7-1 in the sixth, seventh inning, then I'm like, okay.
05:20Maybe in the seventh inning.
05:21I'm like, okay.
05:21This is not looking.
05:22This isn't looking good.
05:23But when you start chipping away and chipping away, then you start realizing or feeling the confidence
05:29that you can win this game.
05:31You know, the other thing in talking about last night, and I know they pointed out,
05:35it's something I said at the beginning of the year, Arizona has zero lefties in their bullpen.
05:40None, man.
05:40So you have nothing to fear with some of the guys you have up top.
05:44Gunner, there's no lefty-lefty matchup coming.
05:47Adley, you can hit from whatever side you want.
05:49They've got to change that, don't they?
05:50They have to do something.
05:51Yeah, I mean, look, if you had...
05:53When they leave Baltimore, though.
05:54If you had six or seven just live right-handed pitchers, I can't argue with you if you just had
06:00a...
06:00But you don't want a left-hander in there at some point to neutralize.
06:03Other teams are seeing this.
06:05Yeah, man, you're going to get screwed over with a lot of left-handed bats against you late.
06:09So, Eli in Parkville.
06:11What's up, Eli?
06:12Hey, good morning, fellas.
06:13Good morning.
06:14I love what Elias has done with the team, but I would also hate to beat him
06:18because every year it just seems like Mountie gets hurt whenever we need to trade him.
06:22But, like, we do need to trade him eventually, but when Westbrook comes back,
06:25I think it would be nice to put him in blaze at third
06:27and then just have Jeremiah Jackson at second and rotate him in holiday at second
06:31and then have Mayo at first since he can't be optioned anymore.
06:36Mayo can be optioned.
06:38He has one more.
06:39That's it.
06:40The hard part is...
06:40The option is for the year.
06:43It's not you take him down, bring him back.
06:45That's one option he's done.
06:46The option is for the year, not for one trip down.
06:49The other thing I'd say, you're not platooning both Jacksons.
06:52If Jackson Holiday is healthy and he's ready to play, that guy's playing almost every day.
06:56Let's go to Johnny and Dundalk.
06:59What's up, Johnny?
07:00Fellas, good morning, good morning.
07:02Two things.
07:05I'm really okay with Dean Kramer's star last night.
07:08Nine strikeouts in April, I'm good with that.
07:11And then Jeremiah Jackson, if he does even a quarter of what he's done the last three games,
07:17we don't even ever talk about his defense being a problem.
07:20He made an incredible defensive play to get everything started for Dean Kramer last night,
07:25that over-the-shoulder catch going out on another little...
07:28It looked like a bloop that was going to fall in.
07:31410-583-1057.
07:33That's the number, but the most big bad morning show on the fan.
07:36Jeremy, are you really, as a GM, if everybody else is hitting and doing their jobs,
07:42let's say you can only send Kobe Mayo down one time,
07:46and the next time you bring him up, he has no more options.
07:49Are you worried about that?
07:50No.
07:51I don't give a rip about that.
07:52Well, you're at this point where...
07:53I'm burning your options because of what you're doing or not doing.
07:56Well, this is where you get into this point of, okay, we've got prospects, we're using them for this.
08:00At some point, it becomes more about the major league level and what's going on there.
08:05It's not about, well, this guy has options and we might lose this,
08:08and we've got to be careful of this down the line.
08:10When you're a losing team and you have young players, yeah, I get that.
08:13But when you're winning and you want to go to the postseason, it's more about what's happening up here.
08:17It doesn't mean you forget all the developmental stuff that goes on in the minor leagues,
08:21but these guys that have been stuck in this 4A-type atmosphere,
08:25like we're waiting for you to hit at this level.
08:27Every time you're in AAA, you rake, waiting for you to...
08:30Until that happens...
08:31Are you a prospect or are you a suspect?
08:34I mean...
08:35I mean, that's what it comes down to.
08:37I'm not worried about what kind of options somebody...
08:40If I can sit them down, I'm sitting them down for the greater good of my baseball team.
08:46Yeah.
