What was the focal point of the ministry of Jesus? What was His mission on earth? The answer affects everyone in this world, and beyond!

00:00:17Hello friends, I'm Pastor Joe Lasswell.

00:00:19It's good to be with you at this time.

00:00:22We're going to take some time here, partially away from our Time of the End Prophecy series.

00:00:31But it does have to do with prophecy, as we'll see in just a few moments.

00:00:35We're going to talk about Jesus, my favorite subject in all the world.

00:00:41And we're going to talk about Jesus and His character, His mission.

00:00:46This is a time of year that we celebrate the last week of the life of Jesus, His death at

00:00:57Calvary,

00:00:58His rest in the tomb on Sabbath, and His resurrection.

00:01:03And we want to talk about some of those things here in just a moment.

00:01:07But before we do, let's have a quick prayer together.

00:01:10I invite you to kneel or bow your heads with me, please.

00:01:13Father in Heaven, we thank You so much for Jesus.

00:01:16We thank You for the Holy Spirit.

00:01:18We thank You for Your love towards us.

00:01:21As we look at Calvary and all these themes dealing with the mission of Jesus,

00:01:26we see such great love You have for each and every one of us.

00:01:30We ask forgiveness for our sins.

00:01:31We pray that we may be found faithful.

00:01:34And give us the Holy Spirit and discernment as we look back at the things You have done

00:01:41through Your Son for us who live today.

00:01:45May we come to give our hearts afresh to Him.

00:01:49Give me words to speak.

00:01:50I humbly ask in the name of Jesus who is so worthy.

00:01:53Amen.

00:01:54Amen.

00:01:56And amen.

00:01:57I've entitled this particular study, The Focal Point.

00:02:03The Focal Point.

00:02:04I want you to please keep that in the back of your mind as we go through this study into

00:02:14God's Word.

00:02:17The Focal Point.

00:02:19And ask yourself as we go through, what is the focal point?

00:02:22What's the main thing here?

00:02:24What's the center?

00:02:26Right?

00:02:27Because I'm going to talk about Jesus.

00:02:30And Jesus, as we go back in time, Jesus had come to this earth, of course, we know.

00:02:38And He was born there in the manger in Bethlehem.

00:02:41And He grew up.

00:02:42And we know that history.

00:02:44We read the Gospels.

00:02:45But Jesus here, He's a grown man.

00:02:48And upon hearing that there had been a voice crying in the wilderness,

00:02:52He knew that the time had come to begin His ministry, His mission.

00:02:57And He left the carpenter's shop for good.

00:03:01And so He comes to John the Baptist there.

00:03:06And what happens?

00:03:07And He's baptized.

00:03:08Not because He had sinned, right?

00:03:11But as He said, it was necessary to fulfill all righteousness.

00:03:15You see, He was an example to all humanity.

00:03:17That to be a citizen of heaven, we here on earth must be born again.

00:03:22Filled with the Holy Spirit.

00:03:26Jesus then leaves John.

00:03:28And He travels into the desert to be tested by the devil.

00:03:32And He passed the test, didn't He?

00:03:35And He continues His ministry by picking His disciples.

00:03:40We learn from that.

00:03:41He moved according to Gospel order, as did Moses and the prophets before Him.

00:03:47And He gives these men, these disciples, first-hand training for three and a half years,

00:03:53going about healing the sick, bringing sight to the blind,

00:03:57making the lame to walk and the dumb to speak, casting out demons.

00:04:04And all along the way, Jesus tried to explain the reason for His coming.

00:04:08But the disciples just could not understand fully His meaning, right?

00:04:15John the Baptist had said in their hearing, we read it in John 1 and verse 29,

00:04:20Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

00:04:28But they did not understand what all that entailed.

00:04:31Jesus was supposed to come in and sit on the throne of David right there

00:04:35and remove them from the yoke of Rome, right?

00:04:43Jesus had told them many times, in fact, that He would have to die so that many could live.

00:04:54Let's go to Matthew chapter 20.

00:04:58It's one of those times.

00:05:00Matthew chapter 20, verses 18 and 19.

00:05:03Here Jesus is speaking and He says,

00:05:04Behold, we go up to Jerusalem,

00:05:07And the Son of Man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes,

00:05:12and they shall condemn Him to death,

00:05:16and shall deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify Him.

00:05:22And the third day He shall rise again.

00:05:26And I've often thought about that.

00:05:28Jesus here is speaking to them,

00:05:30and I think because of their reactions,

00:05:32I get the picture that they're looking at Him and they're all puzzled like,

00:05:35What is He talking about?

00:05:39Do you get that?

00:05:40Does anybody else get that picture in their mind?

00:05:45Confusion?

00:05:46Things are going good here.

00:05:47We're going to Jerusalem.

00:05:48Right?

00:05:51This is when He's going to take the throne.

00:05:55What's this about betrayal and dying?

00:05:57What?

00:05:59It wasn't sinking in.

00:06:01It just wasn't sinking in.

00:06:03There were reasons for that.

00:06:06You know, the Jews had been plotting to kill Jesus ever since the healing of that invalid man at the

00:06:11pool of Bethesda.

00:06:12Two years earlier.

00:06:15And what'd they do?

00:06:16They'd set spies to follow Him wherever He went.

00:06:20In fact, repeatedly thereafter,

00:06:21they became more bold in their public attacks upon Him.

00:06:25You see it as you go through the Gospels.

00:06:27More recently, they had made repeated attempts to arrest Him and to kill Him.

00:06:32And so their plans were now rapidly taking more definite shape,

00:06:36particularly since the resurrection of Lazarus, a few weeks prior to that time.

00:06:42But here, for the first time,

00:06:45Jesus specifically mentions the fact that the Gentiles, the Roman authorities,

00:06:50will be instrumental in His death.

00:06:55If you recall,

00:07:00three years before,

00:07:01Jesus had told Nicodemus, right?

00:07:03He told Nicodemus, who came at night to talk to Him,

00:07:06He said He must be lifted up.

00:07:09And so He was actually implying

00:07:11that He was going to be crucified.

00:07:13You can go to John chapter 3 and read about that.

00:07:16But now, for the first time,

00:07:20He clearly foretells the manner of His death.

00:07:23But His disciples just couldn't comprehend His mission, see?

00:07:27They needed to see the focal point first.

00:07:33They just couldn't see it then.

00:07:36Things had to happen.

00:07:40And it had to happen for,

00:07:42basically for most all the Jews,

00:07:44the Jewish nation as well.

00:07:49They needed their vision

00:07:51to get away from the distractions

00:07:53and to focus in on the mission of Jesus

00:07:57and what was about to take place.

00:08:01So Jesus does.

00:08:03He makes a triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

00:08:05And while all are celebrating

00:08:07and the priests were arguing,

00:08:09Jesus disappears into the temple, doesn't He?

00:08:12They're looking around, they can't find Him.

00:08:15And so when He goes in,

00:08:16He overthrows the money changers,

00:08:18condemning what they had done

00:08:19to His Father's house.

00:08:24The next day,

00:08:25He curses the fig tree.

00:08:27You know what a symbol of Israel,

00:08:29a fig tree is.

00:08:31And He cursed it.

00:08:32Why?

00:08:32It showed all this promise

00:08:34of just having wonderful fruit,

00:08:36but He couldn't find any.

00:08:37It didn't bear any fruit.

00:08:44He spent time during the last week

00:08:46teaching parables

00:08:48and trying to open the eyes of the leaders

00:08:51before it was just too late.

00:08:53And in the last attempt before His death,

00:08:55He scorches them

00:08:57by the stern woes of Matthew 23.

00:09:00Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,

00:09:03He said.

00:09:05You know, sometimes,

00:09:10sometimes,

00:09:13and I don't condone violence necessarily,

00:09:17but sometimes we need a smack in the face

00:09:20to wake us up, don't we?

00:09:22It's kind of a last effort

00:09:24before they condemn Him

00:09:27to wake them up to their course.

00:09:30Woe unto you!

00:09:34Have you ever been

00:09:37scathingly rebuked?

00:09:39The shame you feel.

00:09:42Now, the important thing is

00:09:43how do you react to it, see?

00:09:47How did they react to it?

00:09:50I think there were different reactions.

00:09:53I think some of them

00:09:54reacted in the right way

00:09:56as we find out later on

00:09:57after He was resurrected

00:09:58and Peter gives His sermon

00:10:00and there were priests

00:10:02who were born again.

00:10:04And I think it can go back to this.

00:10:06Matthew 23.

00:10:09But to those who had already

00:10:10given their hearts to the devil,

00:10:12they even more wanted to

00:10:15tear Him to pieces.

00:10:20Jesus was trying to reach

00:10:21their hearts, wasn't He?

00:10:24So then He leaves the temple

00:10:25by saying,

00:10:26Behold, your house is left unto you

00:10:29desolate.

00:10:34Jesus is betrayed by Judas

00:10:37as He is going through

00:10:39the experience of Gethsemane

00:10:41and as the weight of our sins

00:10:42are placed upon Him,

00:10:44the mob arrives

00:10:45to take Him by force.

00:10:47Peter jumps up,

00:10:50pulls his sword,

00:10:51his little,

00:10:54almost a dagger really,

00:10:57cuts off the ear of one of them.

00:10:59Jesus rebukes him and says,

00:11:01Hey, this has to happen.

00:11:05And so Jesus was taken at night.

00:11:07He goes through a mock trial,

00:11:09which by the way

00:11:10was conducted illegally

00:11:11by most of the Sanhedrin.

00:11:14He was flogged and beaten.

00:11:20And He was crucified.

00:11:26In our prophecy series,

00:11:29we are studying the book of Daniel

00:11:32and in the book of Daniel,

00:11:33we learn that chapter 9

00:11:35had predicted His coming and death

00:11:37in verses 25 to 27.

00:11:40Predicted this.

00:11:43But I want to read it to you

00:11:46and show you.

00:11:48Go to Daniel chapter 9

00:11:51and verse 25.

00:11:54And pay attention to what it says here.

00:11:56Those of you,

00:11:57I invite you to,

00:11:58next time we get together,

00:11:59we'll be getting back into

00:12:00our prophecy series.

00:12:03But notice what it says here,

00:12:05Daniel.

00:12:05It says,

00:12:05Know therefore and understand

00:12:06that from the going forth

00:12:07of the commandment

00:12:08to restore

00:12:09and to build Jerusalem

00:12:10unto the Messiah,

00:12:12the Prince.

00:12:12That's speaking of Jesus.

00:12:14Unto the time that Jesus

00:12:16was to come.

00:12:18Right?

00:12:19Shall be seven weeks

00:12:20and threescore and two weeks.

00:12:22The street shall be built again

00:12:24and the wall even

00:12:25in troublous times.

00:12:26Verse 26.

00:12:27And after threescore and two weeks

00:12:30shall Messiah be cut off.

00:12:32But not for Himself.

00:12:36The Messiah is going to be put off,

00:12:38put to death,

00:12:39but not for Himself.

00:12:43And the people of the Prince

00:12:44that shall come

00:12:45shall destroy the city

00:12:46and the sanctuary.

00:12:48And the end thereof

00:12:49shall be with a flood

00:12:50and unto the end of the war

00:12:51desolations are determined.

00:12:53We get into all this

00:12:54in our prophecy series.

00:12:55I can't break it down

00:12:56for you right now.

00:12:57Verse 27.

00:12:59And He shall confirm

00:13:00the covenant with many

00:13:01for one week.

00:13:02Who?

00:13:02The Messiah.

00:13:03And in the midst of the week

00:13:05He shall cause the sacrifice

00:13:08and the oblation

00:13:09to cease.

00:13:12He shall cause what?

00:13:14The sacrifice

00:13:17and the oblation

00:13:19to cease.

00:13:20So here in Daniel chapter 9

00:13:22these verses

00:13:23are telling us

00:13:25exactly when

00:13:27the Messiah would be coming.

00:13:29Now Jesus fulfilled it

00:13:30to the letter.

00:13:34After He's baptized by John

00:13:36He goes into the synagogue

00:13:37and He says

00:13:38the time has come.

00:13:40The time has been fulfilled.

00:13:42What time?

00:13:43The last week

00:13:44of the 70 week prophecy

00:13:45here of Daniel 9.

00:13:49It's time for

00:13:50my ministry.

00:13:56They see here in Daniel 9

00:13:57the angel Gabriel

00:13:58is informing Daniel

00:13:59about the first part

00:14:00of the 2300 year prophecy

00:14:02from Daniel 8

00:14:04and verse 14.

00:14:07And He's talking about

00:14:08the first 70 weeks

00:14:09or the first 490 years

00:14:11of the 2300 year prophecy

00:14:13and that Jesus would come

00:14:15and die in the middle

00:14:16of the 70th week

00:14:18causing the end

00:14:19of the sacrifices

00:14:20and offerings

00:14:21of the sanctuary services.

00:14:23And we studied

00:14:24all this out.

00:14:24Still study it.

00:14:27And so

00:14:28my point is

00:14:29is that right here

00:14:31is Jesus

00:14:32we read Matthew

00:14:33He's hanging on the cross

00:14:34in fulfillment

00:14:35of Daniel chapter 9

00:14:37and verse 27.

00:14:43I hope you can see that.

00:14:46Let's go to Matthew chapter 27.

00:14:50Matthew chapter 27

00:14:58verse 50

00:15:02Jesus

00:15:03when He had cried again

00:15:04with a loud voice

00:15:05He yielded up the ghost

00:15:06He's there

00:15:07He's been crucified

00:15:09and He dies

00:15:11and behold

00:15:11the veil of the temple

00:15:12was rent in twain

00:15:13from the top

00:15:14to the bottom.

00:15:15Why?

00:15:17Because Daniel 9

00:15:18had told us

00:15:19that He was going to

00:15:20cause the sacrifice

00:15:21and oblations

00:15:22to cease.

00:15:23They were no longer needed.

00:15:25Jesus

00:15:26was the Passover Lamb

00:15:28that was slain.

00:15:33And that veil

00:15:34in the temple

00:15:34was ripped

00:15:35by the hands

00:15:37from top to bottom

00:15:38not the hands of men

00:15:40supernatural hand

00:15:41did it.

00:15:43That veil

00:15:44was seven inches thick.

00:15:46No man

00:15:47can rip it

00:15:48like that.

00:15:51Let's go back

00:15:52to Matthew 27

00:15:54and the earth

00:15:54did quake

00:15:55and the rocks

00:15:56rent

00:15:57Jesus had just

00:15:58died see

00:15:59and the graves

00:16:00were opened

00:16:00and many bodies

00:16:01of the saints

00:16:02which slept

00:16:03arose

00:16:03they came out

00:16:05of the graves

00:16:05after His resurrection

00:16:07and went into

00:16:07the holy city

00:16:08and appeared

00:16:09unto many

00:16:10all the witnesses

00:16:12you see.

00:16:14It's undeniable.

00:16:24Verse 54

00:16:26Now when the centurion

00:16:27and they that were

00:16:29with Him

00:16:29watching Jesus

00:16:30saw the earthquake

00:16:31and those things

00:16:32that were done

00:16:33they feared greatly

00:16:34saying truly

00:16:35this was

00:16:36the Son

00:16:37of God.

00:16:40Remember

00:16:41there was darkness

00:16:42over the whole land

00:16:43as well

00:16:43and all these things

00:16:45it was so dark

00:16:47there are

00:16:48documented

00:16:49witness accounts

00:16:51that people

00:16:52had to crawl

00:16:52on the ground

00:16:53back to the city

00:16:55because you couldn't see

00:16:56if you lit a torch

00:16:57it was swallowed up

00:16:58in darkness.

00:17:01But here you see

00:17:02a centurion

00:17:03he says

00:17:03truly this was

00:17:05the Son of God.

00:17:06Centurion means

00:17:07commander

00:17:08of a hundred men.

00:17:11That is

00:17:12a captain

00:17:12of a group

00:17:13in the Roman army

00:17:14called a century

00:17:15that's what they called him.

00:17:16The number of soldiers

00:17:17in a century

00:17:18actually varied

00:17:19from 50 to 100.

00:17:21But this particular

00:17:23centurion

00:17:23was probably

00:17:24in charge

00:17:25of a company

00:17:26of Roman soldiers

00:17:26that were on

00:17:28police duties

00:17:28for Herod and Typus.

00:17:30Remember the

00:17:31Tetrarch of Galilee

00:17:32the governor of Galilee

00:17:33during the Passover feast

00:17:35which Josephus says

00:17:36had

00:17:37from 2 to 3 million

00:17:38visitors in the area

00:17:39of Jerusalem

00:17:40at that time.

00:17:43But on this day

00:17:47all attention

00:17:48around Jerusalem

00:17:49was on a hill

00:17:49called Golgotha.

00:17:53It becomes evident

00:17:54during the course

00:17:55of the narrative

00:17:56that this

00:17:57centurion

00:17:58he wasn't a Jewish

00:17:59proselyte

00:18:00you know

00:18:00a convert.

00:18:03According to tradition

00:18:04this centurion's name

00:18:06was Platonius

00:18:07or some say

00:18:10Longinus

00:18:12but he encapsulates

00:18:14the focal point

00:18:14of this precise time

00:18:16with his statement

00:18:16in verse 54.

00:18:17Truly this was

00:18:19the Son of God.

00:18:20Now some translations

00:18:21say

00:18:21a Son of God

00:18:23but that is really

00:18:24too vague

00:18:24for the context.

00:18:26The expression

00:18:27would more accurately

00:18:28be translated

00:18:29God's Son.

00:18:32The focal point

00:18:33was God's Son

00:18:35and he died

00:18:37on the cross.

00:18:41You know

00:18:42when Jesus

00:18:43was here

00:18:45the focal point

00:18:46of the religion

00:18:47of the Jewish people

00:18:48was the law

00:18:49of God.

00:18:51They've gotten

00:18:51so far away

00:18:52from adding to it

00:18:54remember

00:18:54Jesus said

00:18:55you make up

00:18:56traditions

00:18:56and call it

00:18:57the law of God

00:18:58and it's not

00:18:58it's man-made

00:18:59traditions.

00:19:00A lot of that

00:19:01today.

00:19:03But if you

00:19:05study the Jewish

00:19:06ceremonial system

00:19:07their sacrifices

00:19:08their sanctuary

00:19:09their priesthood

00:19:11the focal point

00:19:12of their entire

00:19:12religion

00:19:13was the law

00:19:13of God

00:19:14and how to

00:19:15obtain forgiveness

00:19:16of sin

00:19:16and atonement

00:19:18if you had

00:19:19broken the law

00:19:20of God.

00:19:22But look at

00:19:23what Jesus

00:19:23told them

00:19:24about their

00:19:24condition

00:19:24with the law

00:19:25in John 7

00:19:26and verse 19.

00:19:28He said

00:19:29did not Moses

00:19:30give you the law

00:19:32and yet none of you

00:19:33keepeth the law

00:19:34he says

00:19:35why go you

00:19:36about to kill me?

00:19:39Now

00:19:39this is a paradox

00:19:41isn't it?

00:19:42That the

00:19:43focal point

00:19:44of your religion

00:19:45was where the

00:19:45Ten Commandments

00:19:46was

00:19:46inside the Ark

00:19:47of the Covenant

00:19:48it was the

00:19:49central point

00:19:50in the sanctuary.

00:19:51That was the

00:19:52focal point

00:19:53of everything

00:19:54to the Jews.

00:19:55Yet the

00:19:56center

00:19:56or the

00:19:57focal point

00:19:58of your religion

00:19:59you failed

00:20:00to keep.

00:20:01Now what

00:20:02would you

00:20:02call that?

00:20:07Well

00:20:07one word

00:20:08would be

00:20:09presumptionist

00:20:09wouldn't it?

00:20:11But it's a

00:20:12profession

00:20:12but no reality.

00:20:15And did you

00:20:15know that we're

00:20:16in a very

00:20:16similar condition

00:20:17today?

00:20:19Now the

00:20:20law of God

00:20:20is not the

00:20:21focal point

00:20:21of our

00:20:21religion today

00:20:22like it

00:20:22was the

00:20:23Jews.

00:20:24In most

00:20:25all of the

00:20:26Protestant churches

00:20:27that you

00:20:27enter around

00:20:28our country

00:20:32you'll find

00:20:33that the

00:20:34pulpit

00:20:35is at the

00:20:36center.

00:20:37It's in the

00:20:38center during

00:20:38the worship

00:20:39services.

00:20:39And the

00:20:40reason for that

00:20:41is because

00:20:41Protestants are

00:20:42supposed to

00:20:42focus on the

00:20:44word of God

00:20:44and the

00:20:45proclamation

00:20:45of the

00:20:46word of

00:20:46God is

00:20:47central

00:20:47see

00:20:48in our

00:20:49religion.

00:20:50If you

00:20:51were to

00:20:51enter a

00:20:51Jewish

00:20:51synagogue

00:20:52in our

00:20:52country

00:20:53you would

00:20:53find that

00:20:53they have

00:20:54the Ten

00:20:54Commandments

00:20:55in front.

00:20:56That's their

00:20:57focal point.

00:20:59They have

00:20:59the symbols

00:21:00of the tables

00:21:01of the Ten

00:21:02Commandments.

00:21:02That is the

00:21:03main focal

00:21:04point of

00:21:04their religion

00:21:05to this

00:21:06very day.

00:21:08But in

00:21:08Protestants

00:21:10in the

00:21:11Protestant

00:21:11chapel

00:21:11it is

00:21:13it's not

00:21:14the Ten

00:21:14Commandments

00:21:14is it?

00:21:15You go into

00:21:16any church

00:21:16do you see

00:21:17the Ten

00:21:17Commandments

00:21:17displayed in

00:21:18the front

00:21:19at the

00:21:19pulpit?

00:21:21No.

00:21:23It's the

00:21:23cross of

00:21:24Calvary

00:21:24isn't it?

00:21:25The cross

00:21:26is the

00:21:27focal point

00:21:27of the

00:21:27Christian

00:21:28religion.

00:21:30Now Paul

00:21:31said in

00:21:31Galatians 6

00:21:32and verse

00:21:3314 he said

00:21:33but God

00:21:34forbid that I

00:21:35should glory

00:21:35save in

00:21:36the cross

00:21:37of our

00:21:37Lord Jesus

00:21:38Christ.

00:21:39By whom

00:21:40the world

00:21:40is crucified

00:21:41unto me

00:21:42and I

00:21:44unto the

00:21:45world.

00:21:46And so if

00:21:47you go around

00:21:47you'll see

00:21:48crosses on

00:21:48churches all

00:21:49over your

00:21:49city or

00:21:50town or

00:21:50your state.

00:21:51If you

00:21:51look you'll

00:21:52see crosses

00:21:54maybe dangling

00:21:55from the

00:21:55rear view

00:21:55mirrors in

00:21:56people's

00:21:56cars.

00:21:56I've seen

00:21:57that.

00:21:58Or as

00:21:59stickers on

00:22:00their bumpers

00:22:00or as a

00:22:01necklace around

00:22:02their necks

00:22:03or maybe a

00:22:04t-shirt they

00:22:04wear.

00:22:05I have a

00:22:06shirt that

00:22:06says Jesus

00:22:08but his

00:22:09name is

00:22:09in the

00:22:10shape of

00:22:10a cross.

00:22:12So the

00:22:13cross is a

00:22:14symbol or

00:22:15a focal

00:22:15point of

00:22:16our

00:22:16Christian

00:22:17religion.

00:22:20But the

00:22:20Jews we

00:22:21see here in

00:22:22John 7

00:22:22and verse

00:22:2319 the

00:22:23focal point

00:22:24of their

00:22:24religion the

00:22:25law of

00:22:26God they

00:22:27were not

00:22:28even keeping

00:22:28it.

00:22:31So

00:22:33what's the

00:22:34big deal

00:22:35right?

00:22:36What's the

00:22:37big deal

00:22:37Pastor

00:22:38Joel?

00:22:40Well

00:22:41let me

00:22:42tell you

00:22:42something.

00:22:44There are

00:22:45millions of

00:22:46people that

00:22:46profess

00:22:47Christianity

00:22:47and they've

00:22:48seen the

00:22:49cross in

00:22:49churches on

00:22:50top of

00:22:51the outside

00:22:52of churches

00:22:53and maybe

00:22:53they've even

00:22:54worn it around

00:22:55their neck

00:22:55and they

00:22:55have got it

00:22:57on the

00:22:57rear view

00:22:57mirror of

00:22:58the car

00:22:58or on a

00:22:59shirt or

00:22:59whatever

00:23:00and they

00:23:01don't even

00:23:01know what

00:23:01it means.

00:23:03Truly

00:23:05they don't

00:23:05even know

00:23:05what it

00:23:06means.

00:23:09They don't

00:23:09know what

00:23:10it's all

00:23:10about.

00:23:13It is the

00:23:13focal point

00:23:14of their

00:23:14religion and

00:23:15they don't

00:23:16even understand

00:23:17it.

00:23:17And this is

00:23:18important because

00:23:19the Bible makes

00:23:20it very clear

00:23:20that the

00:23:21majority of

00:23:22people that

00:23:22profess Christianity

00:23:23are going to

00:23:24be lost.

00:23:26Jesus

00:23:27himself said

00:23:27so in the

00:23:28Sermon on the

00:23:28Mount and other

00:23:29places all

00:23:30throughout the

00:23:30Gospels and

00:23:31the Bible.

00:23:31And you

00:23:32have to

00:23:32wonder how

00:23:33that is

00:23:33possible.

00:23:34And it

00:23:34has to do

00:23:35with the

00:23:35majority of

00:23:36those professing

00:23:37Christianity

00:23:38just don't

00:23:39understand the

00:23:40focal point of

00:23:41their religion

00:23:41for whatever

00:23:42reason.

00:23:46And when

00:23:46they come to

00:23:47the final

00:23:47judgment,

00:23:48you know what

00:23:49God's going

00:23:50to do?

00:23:53God's going

00:23:54to present

00:23:54the cross.

00:23:56And I want

00:23:56to tell you

00:23:57that when

00:23:57he presents

00:23:58it and

00:23:59people then

00:24:00see what

00:24:01it means

00:24:03they're not

00:24:04going to

00:24:04have one

00:24:04excuse for

00:24:05not being

00:24:06with all

00:24:07the redeemed.

00:24:09In fact,

00:24:09the Bible

00:24:09says they're

00:24:10going to be

00:24:10speechless.

00:24:12You see,

00:24:13to people

00:24:13today the

00:24:14cross is

00:24:14like a

00:24:15charm.

00:24:16Or it's

00:24:16just a

00:24:17symbol but

00:24:17they don't

00:24:18understand what

00:24:18it means so

00:24:19it's a

00:24:19symbol without

00:24:20substance.

00:24:24So my

00:24:24question to

00:24:25you, all

00:24:25those seeing

00:24:26me, hearing

00:24:28me, do

00:24:28you understand

00:24:29what it

00:24:29means?

00:24:32Do you?

00:24:36Paul said

00:24:37in 1 Corinthians

00:24:38chapter 1

00:24:39and verse

00:24:3918, he

00:24:42said, for

00:24:42the preaching

00:24:43of the

00:24:43cross is to

00:24:44them that

00:24:44perish

00:24:46foolishness,

00:24:47but unto

00:24:48us which are

00:24:48saved it is

00:24:49the power

00:24:49of God.

00:24:52Now, some

00:24:53people think

00:24:54that if you're

00:24:54in a Christian

00:24:54church, the

00:24:57cross would

00:24:57be one of

00:24:58the easiest

00:24:58things to

00:24:59preach about.

00:24:59And I've

00:25:00told you

00:25:00this before.

00:25:02And I

00:25:03want to

00:25:03assure you,

00:25:03if you

00:25:04understand what

00:25:04it means,

00:25:05it's not the

00:25:06easiest thing to

00:25:07preach about at

00:25:07all.

00:25:08In fact, it

00:25:09is actually one

00:25:10of the most

00:25:10difficult subjects

00:25:11to present,

00:25:13believe it or

00:25:13not.

00:25:15If you

00:25:15understand what

00:25:16it means,

00:25:17and do you

00:25:18know why?

00:25:20Because when

00:25:20the cross is

00:25:21presented in

00:25:22truth, people

00:25:23are going to

00:25:23get unhappy.

00:25:25And they'll

00:25:25usually get

00:25:26angry.

00:25:28Our selfish

00:25:29hearts never

00:25:30want to be

00:25:30exposed.

00:25:31So when they

00:25:32are exposed,

00:25:33the reaction

00:25:34is usually

00:25:35anger.

00:25:40We get a

00:25:40good example

00:25:41of that here

00:25:42within the

00:25:43last couple

00:25:43of weeks.

00:25:44Anybody

00:25:44been seeing

00:25:44the news?

00:25:45There's a

00:25:46young guy who

00:25:47recently was a

00:25:47player for the

00:25:48Chicago Bulls

00:25:49basketball team

00:25:49in the National

00:25:50Basketball

00:25:51Association, who

00:25:52lately became a

00:25:52born-again

00:25:53believer in

00:25:53Christ.

00:25:54And because he

00:25:55took a personal

00:25:56stand against

00:25:56the unrighteousness

00:25:58of the LBGTQ

00:26:00alphabet movement,

00:26:02because the

00:26:03NBA was

00:26:04promoting it,

00:26:06his team, the

00:26:06Chicago Bulls,

00:26:07cut him from

00:26:08the team.

00:26:09They said that

00:26:10his words and

00:26:11his actions,

00:26:12which basically

00:26:13were scriptures

00:26:13he shared and

00:26:14pointing others to

00:26:15Jesus, had

00:26:16become a

00:26:17detriment to

00:26:17the team.

00:26:23I'll tell you

00:26:24something.

00:26:27The Spirit is

00:26:28alive in this

00:26:28young man.

00:26:30This has not

00:26:30silenced the

00:26:31young man.

00:26:32And his

00:26:33witness is

00:26:34sending shockwaves

00:26:35through the

00:26:35social media

00:26:36right now.

00:26:36Just look.

00:26:39I happen to

00:26:40be familiar

00:26:41with this

00:26:41young man.

00:26:42He played

00:26:42over here at

00:26:43the university

00:26:44in our city,

00:26:45Purdue

00:26:46university for

00:26:47a couple

00:26:47years.

00:26:49But he

00:26:49came to

00:26:50know Jesus,

00:26:50you see.

00:26:54He's

00:26:54understanding the

00:26:55focal point.

00:26:56People aren't

00:26:57liking it.

00:27:01And so

00:27:01people,

00:27:03they don't

00:27:04understand what

00:27:06the cross means.

00:27:07And when you

00:27:07tell them,

00:27:08they don't want

00:27:08to hear about it

00:27:09as it cuts

00:27:10straight to the

00:27:10heart.

00:27:11And tough

00:27:12decisions are

00:27:12then required of

00:27:13them.

00:27:13The Holy

00:27:14Spirit's

00:27:14saying that

00:27:14you've

00:27:15got to

00:27:15make a

00:27:15decision.

00:27:16And so

00:27:17the preaching

00:27:18of the cross

00:27:18and its

00:27:18meaning isn't

00:27:19preached much

00:27:20in churches

00:27:20today.

00:27:23You think

00:27:23there'd be

00:27:24mega churches

00:27:24if the cross

00:27:25was actually

00:27:26preached?

00:27:27The focal

00:27:27point was

00:27:28pointed out?

00:27:30No,

00:27:31there's a

00:27:31different cross

00:27:32that's preached.

00:27:34And that's

00:27:35one that tickles

00:27:35the ears of

00:27:36the listeners.

00:27:37Oh,

00:27:38you know,

00:27:38it's okay,

00:27:41sin.

00:27:41We won't

00:27:41stop sinning.

00:27:44Jesus

00:27:45understands.

00:27:46Oh,

00:27:46that sounds

00:27:47really good.

00:27:50That's not

00:27:51what the

00:27:51Bible says.

00:27:54But the

00:27:55truth of the

00:27:56cross,

00:27:57friends,

00:27:57it's not

00:27:57heard much

00:27:58today.

00:28:01So much

00:28:01so,

00:28:02Ellen White

00:28:02said on

00:28:03one occasion

00:28:04back in

00:28:04her time,

00:28:05she said,

00:28:05and it's

00:28:06found in

00:28:06Our High

00:28:07Calling,

00:28:08page 46,

00:28:09she said,

00:28:10quote,

00:28:10the cross

00:28:11has been

00:28:11almost lost

00:28:12sight of.

00:28:17Now,

00:28:17that doesn't

00:28:18mean that

00:28:18people are

00:28:19not seeing

00:28:19the crosses

00:28:20on the

00:28:20churches,

00:28:21or around

00:28:21other people's

00:28:22necks,

00:28:22or on the

00:28:23rear view

00:28:23near the

00:28:24car,

00:28:25or on a

00:28:26shirt.

00:28:27Oh,

00:28:27they're seeing

00:28:28all those

00:28:28things,

00:28:30but they

00:28:31don't really

00:28:31see what

00:28:32it's about

00:28:32or what

00:28:33it means.

00:28:36That's what

00:28:37they don't

00:28:37see.

00:28:38And I

00:28:39want to tell

00:28:39you that

00:28:39if you

00:28:40take the

00:28:40cross

00:28:40away,

00:28:42it's just

00:28:42like taking

00:28:43the sun

00:28:43out of

00:28:43the heavens.

00:28:45Everything

00:28:46is lost

00:28:47for mankind.

00:28:49You see,

00:28:49without the

00:28:50cross,

00:28:52you can't

00:28:53have a

00:28:53connection

00:28:53with your

00:28:54Heavenly

00:28:54Father.

00:28:56You can

00:28:56have no

00:28:57union with

00:28:57Jesus without

00:28:58it.

00:28:59You can

00:29:00have no

00:29:00hope that

00:29:01on the

00:29:01day of

00:29:01judgment,

00:29:01you can

00:29:02be acquitted

00:29:02of your

00:29:03sins.

00:29:05And there

00:29:06is no

00:29:07means provided

00:29:07for you

00:29:08to overcome

00:29:08your sins

00:29:09without the

00:29:09cross.

00:29:11In fact,

00:29:13every hope

00:29:13that you

00:29:14have for

00:29:14the future

00:29:15is based

00:29:16on the

00:29:16truth of

00:29:16the cross,

00:29:17if you

00:29:18understand it.

00:29:21So I

00:29:22want to

00:29:23study with

00:29:24you from

00:29:24the scriptures

00:29:24about the

00:29:25cross,

00:29:25and more

00:29:26especially

00:29:26what it

00:29:26means,

00:29:27what will

00:29:28happen to

00:29:28us if we

00:29:29come to

00:29:29it,

00:29:30and get

00:29:31close to

00:29:31it,

00:29:33and understand

00:29:34why it

00:29:34was needed.

00:29:35Now I

00:30:32first thing

00:30:33that we

00:30:33understand when

00:30:34we come to

00:30:34the cross is

00:30:35that it is

00:30:35a pledge,

00:30:36a promise,

00:30:37a guarantee

00:30:38of the

00:30:38boundless,

00:30:40infinite,

00:30:42immeasurable

00:30:43love that

00:30:43God has for

00:30:44you and

00:30:44me.

00:30:47You know,

00:30:47we as

00:30:48human beings,

00:30:48we get in

00:30:49situations where

00:30:49we can't help

00:30:50ourselves.

00:30:51We get into

00:30:52situations from

00:30:53maybe it's an

00:30:54accident or

00:30:54sickness or

00:30:55suffering and

00:30:56we can't help

00:30:57ourselves.

00:30:57But Jesus was

00:30:58not in that

00:30:59situation.

00:31:01You see,

00:31:02he didn't have

00:31:02to come down

00:31:03here to

00:31:03earth.

00:31:05He didn't

00:31:06have to offer

00:31:06his life upon

00:31:07the cross for

00:31:08our sins and

00:31:09save us.

00:31:12Do you

00:31:13remember what

00:31:13Jesus prayed to

00:31:14his father there

00:31:15in the garden of

00:31:15Gethsemane?

00:31:18Let's go to

00:31:18Matthew 26 and

00:31:21look at verse

00:31:2239.

00:31:22Notice what

00:31:23Jesus prayed to

00:31:24his father.

00:31:25He's there in

00:31:25the garden of

00:31:26Gethsemane and

00:31:27he says,

00:31:28quote here,

00:31:29verse 39,

00:31:29and he went

00:31:30a little further

00:31:30and fell on

00:31:31his face and

00:31:31he prayed saying,

00:31:33oh my father,

00:31:35if it be

00:31:36possible.

00:31:37Now all the

00:31:38sins of our

00:31:39sins for all

00:31:41time are being

00:31:41placed on his

00:31:42shoulders and

00:31:43he's crumbling

00:31:44under it.

00:31:45His humanity

00:31:46is.

00:31:46And he says,

00:31:47if it be

00:31:47possible,

00:31:48let this

00:31:48pass from

00:31:49me.

00:31:57let that

00:31:58sink in.

00:32:02Think it

00:32:03was easy?

00:32:06God knows

00:32:08it's not easy

00:32:08for us.

00:32:17Oh my

00:32:18father,

00:32:21if it be

00:32:22possible.

00:32:26Let this

00:32:27cup pass

00:32:28from me.

00:32:31But he

00:32:31didn't stop

00:32:32there.

00:32:34Nevertheless,

00:32:36not as I

00:32:38will.

00:32:38Oh,

00:32:39if it was

00:32:39my will

00:32:40and my

00:32:41humanity,

00:32:41I'm out of

00:32:42here.

00:32:43I'm gone.

00:32:47But I

00:32:47don't want

00:32:47to do my

00:32:48will.

00:32:51But as

00:32:52thou

00:32:52wilt,

00:32:53he said.

00:32:57And do

00:32:57you know

00:32:58that Jesus

00:32:58prayed that

00:32:59same prayer

00:32:59three different

00:33:00times there

00:33:00in Gethsemane?

00:33:03Luke said

00:33:04that the

00:33:04stress was

00:33:05so awful

00:33:06for Jesus

00:33:06and his

00:33:07sufferings

00:33:08through that

00:33:08so great

00:33:09that he

00:33:10sweat as it

00:33:10were great

00:33:11drops of

00:33:11blood that

00:33:12dripped on

00:33:13the ground.

00:33:15in fact,

00:33:15it's possible

00:33:16with such

00:33:16stress.

00:33:18They

00:33:19medically

00:33:19checked that

00:33:20all out.

00:33:21There have

00:33:22been people

00:33:22that have

00:33:24sweat drops

00:33:25of blood.

00:33:27And here

00:33:27Jesus is

00:33:28doing that

00:33:28for you

00:33:28and me.

00:33:30He was

00:33:30shedding his

00:33:31blood there

00:33:31in Gethsemane.

00:33:32agony.

00:33:35And do you

00:33:36realize that

00:33:36when Jesus

00:33:37was suffering

00:33:37that agony

00:33:38that he

00:33:39could have

00:33:39decided to

00:33:39just wipe

00:33:41that bloody

00:33:43sweat from

00:33:44his brow and

00:33:44say,

00:33:45I'm not going

00:33:45through with

00:33:46this.

00:33:46So I'm

00:33:47leaving.

00:33:49If it be

00:33:50possible,

00:33:51he said to

00:33:51his father.

00:33:54He could

00:33:54have gone

00:33:55back up to

00:33:55his father

00:33:55in heaven

00:33:57where there

00:33:57were angels

00:33:58that adored

00:33:59him.

00:34:01But if he

00:34:01had,

00:34:03there would

00:34:03have been

00:34:04no way

00:34:04that you

00:34:04and I

00:34:05could have

00:34:05been

00:34:05redeemed

00:34:05from our

00:34:06sins.

00:34:08What did

00:34:09that text

00:34:10say in

00:34:11Revelation 1

00:34:11verse 5?

00:34:13Unto him

00:34:14that loved

00:34:16us.

00:34:20Jesus did

00:34:21it because

00:34:22he loved

00:34:23us.

00:34:25He loved

00:34:26us enough

00:34:26to make

00:34:27a way so

00:34:27that he

00:34:28could take

00:34:28away our

00:34:29sins.

00:34:31And friends,

00:34:32that's the

00:34:34first lesson

00:34:35of the

00:34:35cross.

00:34:38What was

00:34:39the price

00:34:39to take

00:34:40away our

00:34:40sins?

00:34:41The blood

00:34:41of Jesus.

00:34:43And that

00:34:44is, in

00:34:45fact,

00:34:45the mystery

00:34:46of the

00:34:46Christian

00:34:46religion.

00:34:48The one

00:34:49that died

00:34:49to pay

00:34:49the price

00:34:50for your

00:34:50sin is

00:34:51one who

00:34:51was not

00:34:51under the

00:34:52law.

00:34:53You realize

00:34:53that?

00:34:53An angel

00:34:54or another

00:34:54human being

00:34:55couldn't die

00:34:56to take

00:34:56away our

00:34:57sins.

00:34:58We were

00:34:59all created

00:35:00under the

00:35:00law.

00:35:01All angels,

00:35:02all created

00:35:02beings are

00:35:03subject to

00:35:04the law

00:35:04of God.

00:35:05But upon

00:35:05the Son

00:35:05of God,

00:35:06no yoke

00:35:06had ever

00:35:06come.

00:35:08You see,

00:35:09he was

00:35:09above the

00:35:09law.

00:35:10How could

00:35:10you say

00:35:11that,

00:35:11Pastor Joel?

00:35:12Because he

00:35:12is the

00:35:13law.

00:35:15And it

00:35:16was his

00:35:16life and

00:35:17his life

00:35:18alone that

00:35:18could satisfy

00:35:19the claims

00:35:20of God's

00:35:20broken law.

00:35:23Do you

00:35:23realize,

00:35:24friends,

00:35:26that God's

00:35:27law is so

00:35:27holy that he

00:35:29could not do

00:35:29away with it

00:35:30or change it

00:35:30in the slightest

00:35:31of ways to

00:35:32save the

00:35:32angels around

00:35:33his throne or

00:35:34even his own

00:35:35son?

00:35:38Romans 7

00:35:39and verse

00:35:3912,

00:35:40notice what it

00:35:40says.

00:35:40Paul says

00:35:41wherefore the

00:35:41law is

00:35:42holy and

00:35:43the commandment

00:35:44holy and

00:35:45just and

00:35:45good.

00:35:46The cross

00:35:47is a proof

00:35:47to us that

00:35:48there is

00:35:48somebody that

00:35:49loves you

00:35:50more than

00:35:50your mother,

00:35:51more than

00:35:52your father,

00:35:52more than

00:35:52your sister,

00:35:53your brother,

00:35:54or your

00:35:54wife,

00:35:54or your

00:35:54husband,

00:35:55or anybody

00:35:55else.

00:35:59There is

00:36:00somebody,

00:36:01capital S,

00:36:03that loves you

00:36:04with an

00:36:04everlasting love

00:36:05and that's

00:36:05what you

00:36:06call it.

00:36:06An

00:36:07everlasting

00:36:08love.

00:36:09He loves

00:36:10you so

00:36:10much that

00:36:11He was

00:36:11willing to

00:36:11suffer in

00:36:13order to

00:36:13save you.

00:36:16You know,

00:36:17Jesus couldn't

00:36:17live in

00:36:18heaven knowing

00:36:18we would

00:36:19not be

00:36:19with Him

00:36:19for eternity.

00:36:22Contemplate

00:36:23that.

00:36:25And so

00:36:25God found a

00:36:26way to deal

00:36:27with the

00:36:27sin issue.

00:36:30Why did

00:36:31He have to

00:36:31go to the

00:36:32cross to

00:36:32suffer to

00:36:33save us?

00:36:35Look at

00:36:35what it

00:36:36says in

00:36:361 Corinthians

00:36:3715 and

00:36:37verse 3.

00:36:39Notice what

00:36:39Paul says

00:36:40here.

00:36:411 Corinthians

00:36:4215 and

00:36:43verse 3.

00:36:49It says,

00:36:50For I

00:36:50delivered unto

00:36:51you first,

00:36:54for I

00:36:54delivered unto

00:36:55you first of

00:36:56all that

00:36:56which I

00:36:56also received,

00:36:57how that

00:36:58Christ died

00:36:59for our

00:36:59sins according

00:37:00to the

00:37:01scriptures.

00:37:04And so,

00:37:05the first

00:37:06thing that we

00:37:06learn from

00:37:06the cross is

00:37:07that God

00:37:07loves you

00:37:08with a

00:37:08love that

00:37:08is infinite.

00:37:10The second

00:37:11thing we

00:37:11learn from

00:37:11the cross is

00:37:12that Jesus

00:37:12died for

00:37:13our sins

00:37:14and His

00:37:14death changes

00:37:15my mind

00:37:16completely

00:37:16about sin.

00:37:21I want you

00:37:21to think this

00:37:22through now.

00:37:24God has

00:37:25given us

00:37:25brains for

00:37:26a reason.

00:37:27He says,

00:37:28Come,

00:37:29let us

00:37:29reason together.

00:37:30I gave you

00:37:30a mind.

00:37:31Let's think

00:37:31this through.

00:37:33How is our

00:37:34mind changed

00:37:35by the

00:37:35cross?

00:37:38Let me

00:37:38ask you a

00:37:39question.

00:37:42Is sin

00:37:42a terrible

00:37:43thing?

00:37:45Now,

00:37:46people right

00:37:47away say,

00:37:47yes it is.

00:37:48How do we

00:37:48know that

00:37:49sin is a

00:37:49terrible thing?

00:37:51Because we've

00:37:51sinned.

00:37:52We know what

00:37:52the consequences

00:37:54of it are.

00:37:55We see it

00:37:56all around us

00:37:57as well.

00:38:07people have

00:38:08a misunderstanding

00:38:14find in

00:38:14God's

00:38:14Word.

00:38:15It is

00:38:23Speaking of

00:38:30if Jesus

00:38:36don't believe

00:38:38But if I

00:38:39choose to

00:38:40sin I'm

00:38:40choosing to

00:38:41do the

00:38:41very thing

00:38:43that sent

00:38:43Jesus to

00:38:44the cross

00:38:44to die.

00:38:47Do I

00:38:48really

00:38:48understand the

00:38:49cross if I

00:38:49choose to

00:38:50sin?

00:38:51Not really.

00:38:54Unless I've

00:38:55decided that I

00:38:55openly hate

00:38:56the Lord

00:38:56now if

00:38:58you've

00:38:58decided that

00:38:58you hate

00:38:59the Lord

00:39:00and you're

00:39:00not going

00:39:00to follow

00:39:01him

00:39:01then you're

00:39:03free to

00:39:03choose

00:39:05to sin.

00:39:06But if you

00:39:06choose to

00:39:07sin somehow

00:39:07you don't

00:39:08understand the

00:39:09cross because

00:39:09sin is what

00:39:10sent Jesus to

00:39:11the cross to

00:39:12die.

00:39:13Isn't that

00:39:14what the

00:40:00follows it.

00:40:01So it's

00:40:02a release

00:40:02of sins.

00:40:04The great

00:40:05truth taught

00:40:05by the

00:40:06stipulation

00:40:06that the

00:40:07shedding of

00:40:07blood was

00:40:08required for

00:40:09forgiveness

00:40:09was that

00:40:10the salvation

00:40:11of humanity

00:40:12would one

00:40:13day require

00:40:13the death

00:40:14of the

00:40:14Son of

00:40:14God

00:40:15to be

00:40:16released

00:40:16from the

00:40:17penalty

00:40:18of sin
