A Bible study of the book of Daniel, chapter 8. We have concluded that the four horns on the he Goat represent these four kingdoms:
1. Antigonids (283-168 BC) who governed Macedonia and Greece in the west,
2. the Seleucids (312-63 BC) who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia in the east,
3. the Ptolomies (323-30 BC) who ruled Egypt in the south, and
4. the Attalids (263-133 BC) who ruled the kingdom of Pergamum in the north.
As I stated, some of this will be argued for and against but the most important question about this for us is: Out of which of these four kingdoms did the little horn come forth?

00:00:00Hello friends, I'm Pastor Joel Lasswell. I welcome you to our study here this morning.
00:00:09We're going to open up God's Word. We're going to go to Daniel chapter 8.
00:00:12We're continuing in Daniel chapter 8, getting into this vision that Daniel had,
00:00:18a continuation really of Daniel chapter 7, and learning some really, really great, fantastic things,
00:00:26and seeing these puzzle pieces come together, and the links of the chain connecting through prophecy.
00:00:33And I hope you'll find that more and more as we go on.
00:00:37And it's good to be with you, friends.
00:00:40I just get so excited when we get into Bible prophecy.
00:00:43Learn so much every single time. Every time.
00:00:47And I hope you are too.
00:00:48Before we begin, we want to have a word of prayer.
00:00:51Ask the Lord to bless us as we open His Word.
00:00:54So I invite you to kneel if possible.
00:00:57Always have a reverent awe when you come to your Creator and your God.
00:01:06And so if you can't kneel, let's kneel in our hearts and let's bow our heads together.
00:01:11Father in Heaven, we do thank You so very, very much for the opportunity, always, Lord, to open Your Holy Word.
00:01:18Lord, we thank You so much for Your love for us.
00:01:22You poured out all heaven.
00:01:24Knowing that we were lost, You gave up all heaven to save us.
00:01:29You sent Jesus.
00:01:31Jesus came so willingly to this dark planet to bring light to our lives and to save us from sin and the devil.
00:01:42We praise Your holy name this morning.
00:01:44Father, we thank You so much that You created a day every week to spend with us, a Sabbath day.
00:01:50We are so happy about that and we look forward to it each and every week that we know and understand that when we come before You on the Sabbath day,
00:02:01we come before all heaven.
00:02:03And, oh, what an awesome thought and such love You have for us.
00:02:08Father, we pray that You forgive us for our sins.
00:02:11We claim the blood that Jesus shed there at Calvary for our sins.
00:02:15We pray for the power and the strength and courage to do away with those darling, delicious sins that we tend to have.
00:02:25Father, please give us the victory.
00:02:27We pray for that.
00:02:29We pray for the Holy Spirit to be with us now at this time as we open Your Word.
00:02:33And we're studying important things here that pertain to our time.
00:02:36And so I pray that You give me the words to speak as we go through these studies.
00:02:42Be with those who are listening and watching.
00:02:45Open their minds and their hearts to want and love the truth.
00:02:50And give them abilities to share the truth with all.
00:02:53Please be with those who couldn't be with us here this morning.
00:02:55Those who are suffering, Lord.
00:02:57Those who are in hospitals.
00:02:58Those who are dealing with tragedies in life.
00:03:01May they come to know Thee, the true God.
00:03:03And we thank You, Thee again, for the forgiveness of sins.
00:03:08For we ask these favors in the precious name of Jesus, who is so worthy.
00:03:13Amen.
00:03:15And Amen.
00:03:18Well, friends, we're back in Daniel chapter 8.
00:03:22This is a series of studies that I've entitled The Desolator.
00:03:25And as we go on in this chapter, I hope you'll begin to see why I've named this series of studies The Desolator.
00:03:35I'm sure you will.
00:03:36I'm sure you will.
00:03:37We'll lay it out there.
00:03:39I'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion that I have.
00:03:43It's an appropriate name for what goes on in this chapter.
00:03:47We're introduced to the bold pretender.
00:03:52The desolator becomes the desolator here in chapter 8.
00:03:56This is episode 4.
00:03:59We find that in this chapter, two years have elapsed since Daniel's previous vision.
00:04:05He was now actually an old man.
00:04:08And Daniel says here that he was at Shushan, which is very near the Persian Gulf.
00:04:12He's in vision.
00:04:13He sees a ram next to the river.
00:04:15The ram, we found, symbolizes the kings of Media and Persia.
00:04:21Then Daniel sees a he-goat with a large horn between its eyes.
00:04:25The goat representing the country of Greece, the kingdom of Greece.
00:04:31And the horn representing the first king, which we found to be Alexander the Great.
00:04:38And Daniel sees in this vision that the goat attacked the ram with a fury and pursued him as one that was enraged.
00:04:44Which Alexander did by pursuing the Persians until they were utterly destroyed.
00:04:52In Daniel 8, we found, and I shared this with you, that these two animals, the ram and the goat,
00:04:58they're used not only to represent two world empires here in this vision,
00:05:03but they point us to the Day of Atonement because they were sanctuary animals.
00:05:07And this indicates that the activity of the world powers controlled by Satan would try to usurp the knowledge of Christ from the minds of God's people.
00:05:18That's what God's trying to show us here, friends.
00:05:21And this attempt was most successful during the time of the little horn, when it took away the daily.
00:05:30And we're going to get into that in much more detail a little bit later on.
00:05:37Now we left off in our last study by looking at Daniel 8, chapter 8 and verse 8.
00:05:44So let's go there, Daniel 8 and verse 8, and let's read it together here.
00:05:52Of course, I'm not going to hear you read it with me, but you can read it with me.
00:05:59Daniel 8, verse 8.
00:06:00And this is what we were looking at when we left off the last time.
00:06:17We were looking at these four notable ones.
00:06:21Now, it's a historical fact that Alexander's kingdom was not carved up into like four neat kingdoms immediately upon his death.
00:06:30The history of Greece, after Alexander's death, it's actually very complex.
00:06:38And it can be very confusing.
00:06:41Sometimes there were three kingdoms, you know.
00:06:43Other times there were four kingdoms for short space.
00:06:47There were only two.
00:06:51But we went through a lot of this.
00:06:53And there was a lot more you could get into, really.
00:06:56But we concluded that the four horns represented these four specific kingdoms.
00:07:04You had the Antigonids.
00:07:06They governed Macedonia and Greece in the west.
00:07:13Then you had the Seleucids.
00:07:15Of course, they ruled Syria and Mesopotamia in the east.
00:07:18You had the Ptolemies, who ruled Egypt in the south.
00:07:24And then you had this other kingdom.
00:07:27We're going to kind of hone in on this one.
00:07:30The Adelids, who ruled the kingdom of Pergamum in the north.
00:07:37Now, as I stated before, some of this, of course, historians, if you're into history,
00:07:45you read different accounts by historians, a number of them will argue back and forth.
00:07:52There will be arguments.
00:07:53And some of this will be argued for and against.
00:07:56But the most important question about this for us,
00:08:00in studying Bible prophecy, is this.
00:08:04Out of which of these four kingdoms did the little horn come forth?
00:08:08And I'm going to show you here in the next few moments who comes forth.
00:08:13Out of what kingdom?
00:08:15In order to comprehend, though, from which kingdom the little horn emerges,
00:08:19it will be necessary to provide some extensive historical background.
00:08:25Please, I hope your eyes don't glaze over.
00:08:26Pay attention here now.
00:08:28It's very important.
00:08:29You're studying Bible prophecy.
00:08:30History in advance, right?
00:08:33That's what prophecy is.
00:08:34History in advance.
00:08:36So we need to know something about history, right?
00:08:40So we're going to begin in Daniel chapter 2.
00:08:42Now, you're familiar with Daniel chapter 2, right?
00:08:47Nebuchadnezzar, King Nebuchadnezzar, he had a dream.
00:08:49When he woke up, he'd forgotten it.
00:08:51He couldn't recall it.
00:08:53So he called the magicians and the astrologers and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans
00:08:57to tell him the dream and its meaning.
00:09:01Now, pay attention here because everything in Bible prophecy coming to the end times
00:09:10runs through Babylon.
00:09:12That's why God started it with Daniel and started it with the kingdom of Babylon.
00:09:17Everything runs through it.
00:09:18So when he's calling the magicians and the astrologers and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans,
00:09:22we need to make note of that.
00:09:26These guys don't just disappear.
00:09:31Just as Satan doesn't disappear, but one day he will be destroyed.
00:09:36And so he calls them and he wants to know the meaning of this dream.
00:09:44He wants to know, first of all, the dream and then tell him the meaning.
00:09:47And these wise men of Babylon, of course, they were unable to explain what the king demanded.
00:09:52Now, something you may not know, but it's well known from history,
00:10:00that these Babylonian wise men were polytheistic.
00:10:05Polytheistic means that they had a belief in or worship of more than one god.
00:10:10In fact, they told the king that only the gods, plural,
00:10:15could give him the information that he demanded.
00:10:18If you go to Daniel 2 and verse 11, we read it right there in God's word.
00:10:25Daniel chapter 2, verse 11, it says,
00:10:28And it is a rare thing that the king requireth.
00:10:30These are the magicians, the magi, the Chaldeans, the soothsayers.
00:10:38They're saying, Hey, it's a rare thing that you're requiring,
00:10:41and there is none other that can show it before the king except the gods,
00:10:45they said to Nebuchadnezzar, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
00:10:51Isn't that interesting?
00:10:52Because Jesus took flesh to become one of us to show us the true God.
00:10:59Now, we've seen that the book of Daniel reveals that these wise men,
00:11:05they hated Daniel and his three friends, didn't they?
00:11:08In fact, they were the ones that accused Hananiah and Mishael and Azariah
00:11:15when they refused to worship the image which Nebuchadnezzar had raised up there
00:11:20on the plains of Dura, you remember, in Daniel chapter 3.
00:11:25And as I have shown when we studied Daniel chapter 3,
00:11:31the image, that golden image, was a symbol of the Babylonian sun god, Marduk.
00:11:39Now, I want you to notice four key elements which are appropriate to our study here at this time.
00:11:46First, Nebuchadnezzar, who we know later on, for seven years behaved as a beast, right?
00:11:54Second thing, he raised up an image, okay?
00:12:00Third thing, he gave a decree to worship the image to the beast
00:12:05because it was a symbol of him, Nebuchadnezzar, a beast.
00:12:10He raised up an image to the beast.
00:12:13Some of this language sounds familiar to anybody.
00:12:16And the fourth thing, whoever did not worship the image of the beast
00:12:21was to be killed.
00:12:25Well, if it sounds familiar, it's because it is.
00:12:28The four elements will be picked up again in Revelation chapter 13.
00:12:32And this is where End Time Babylon will repeat the story of Daniel 3
00:12:36on a worldwide scale.
00:12:39And I went through a lot of that when we studied Daniel 3.

00:12:53It might take you a little while.
00:12:55It took us 41 studies to get through Daniel 7.
00:12:59It's just remarkable the information that is there that you have to unpack, right?
00:13:05But this episode in Daniel 3 is actually the first link
00:13:10which connects ancient Babylon with end-time spiritual Babylon.
00:13:16And we'll come back to that later.
00:13:21But these Babylonian priests, they hated Daniel.
00:13:24They hated his friends who were not polytheistic but were monotheistic.
00:13:31In other words, they believed there's only one true God.
00:13:36Now, when Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian Empire,
00:13:45a new religion was introduced.
00:13:49And this religion is known as Zoroastrianism.
00:13:53It is characterized by its strict monotheism, only one God.
00:13:58Now, the basic tenets of this religion are that there is one true almighty God.
00:14:05His name is Ahura Mazda.
00:14:07He is the God of light, you see.
00:14:10But there's also an adversary of God whose name is Eramon.
00:14:15He inhabits the realm of darkness.
00:14:19Now, according to Zoroastrianism,
00:14:21there is a constant battle between the God Ahura Mazda and Eramon.
00:14:28And as we look at ancient history,
00:14:31we find that nations have the almost incurable tendency toward polytheism.
00:14:39You go back and read ancient world history,
00:14:42and almost every nation worshipped more than one God.
00:14:48Almost every one.
00:14:50The vast majority.
00:14:52They were polytheistic.
00:14:55And it's also made clear, I mean, in the Bible,
00:14:57Paul talks about Romans 1.
00:14:59If you want to take time to read Romans 1, you'll see that.
00:15:02But even Israel, before the Babylonian captivity,
00:15:05they were obsessed with foreign gods.
00:15:08And so I mention that because it is very strange
00:15:12to find an ancient nation in a polytheistic environment
00:15:17which suddenly advocates monotheism.
00:15:20I mean, it just isn't seen much at all.
00:15:25It's like an anomaly.
00:15:27It really sticks out.
00:15:30It's kind of like, you know,
00:15:32smashing your finger with a hammer.
00:15:34It really sticks out, as you can see by my finger there.
00:15:40Now, other than the Judeo-Christian and Muslim traditions,
00:15:44I know of only two other cases of a dramatic change like that
00:15:47from polytheism to monotheism.
00:15:49One is in Egypt during the reign of Tutankhamun.
00:15:55Maybe you've heard of him, King Tut, right?
00:15:58Tutankhamun.
00:15:59And it makes you wonder,
00:16:02was it because of what the Hebrew god did
00:16:08to the Egyptian civilization at the Exodus?
00:16:12Seems to make sense.
00:16:13But the other one,
00:16:16the other nation that had such a dramatic change
00:16:19from polytheistic beliefs and religions
00:16:22to monotheism,
00:16:23is Persia.
00:16:26Now, friends, let's put a reasoning caps on
00:16:28and let's consider why Persia
00:16:30adopted a strictly monotheistic spirituality.
00:16:35And in fact,
00:16:37many of you are probably already there.
00:16:40The answer is not hard for us to find.
00:16:41Sometime after the fall of Babylon,
00:16:46Daniel,
00:16:47he had an encounter with Cyrus,
00:16:49who was the king of Persia.
00:16:51And the prophet Daniel,
00:16:52he opened up to Cyrus
00:16:53the prophecies of Isaiah
00:16:55regarding the fall of Babylon.
00:16:57In fact, Daniel showed Cyrus
00:16:59that God had chosen him by name
00:17:02to deliver his people
00:17:03a hundred years before Cyrus was born.
00:17:07God named Cyrus to be that deliverer.
00:17:11Let's go to Isaiah chapter 45.
00:17:15Isaiah 45.
00:17:16We're going to begin with verse 1.
00:17:19Isaiah 45.
00:17:20Thus saith the Lord to his anointed,
00:17:23to Cyrus.
00:17:24See, he's naming him.
00:17:26Whose right hand I have holden
00:17:28to subdue nations before him.
00:17:31I will loose the loins of kings
00:17:33to open before him
00:17:34the two-leaved gates.
00:17:36Listen to the description here.
00:17:39The two-leaved gates.
00:17:41Of course,
00:17:42when we looked at it,
00:17:44you know,
00:17:44the Medes and Persians,
00:17:45they diverted the Euphrates River
00:17:48till the river ran low.
00:17:50They went into the city of Babylon.
00:17:52The brass gates were open.
00:17:54We're reading about that prophecy
00:17:56right here
00:17:57in Isaiah 45.
00:17:58To open before him
00:18:04the two-leaved gates,
00:18:06and the gates shall not be shut.
00:18:07I will go before thee
00:18:09and make the crooked places straight.
00:18:11I will break in pieces
00:18:12the gates of brass
00:18:14and cut and sunder the bars of iron.
00:18:16I will give thee
00:18:17the treasures of darkness
00:18:19and hidden riches of secret places
00:18:21that thou mayest know.
00:18:25Here, Isaiah,
00:18:27this is verse 3.
00:18:29That thou mayest know
00:18:30that I,
00:18:31the Lord,
00:18:32which call thee by thy name,
00:18:35am the God of Israel.
00:18:37Look at verse 4.
00:18:39For Jacob,
00:18:40my servant's sake,
00:18:41and Israel mine elect,
00:18:42I have even called thee
00:18:44by thy name.
00:18:46I have surnamed thee,
00:18:49though thou hast not known me.
00:18:52Now what effect do you think
00:18:55that had on Cyrus
00:18:57when he heard it?
00:19:00When Cyrus heard this,
00:19:01he was probably more than
00:19:04deeply impressed.
00:19:08Ezra chapter 1 reveals
00:19:10that Cyrus became a believer
00:19:15in the God of the Hebrews.
00:19:17Let's go to Ezra 1
00:19:19and read that.
00:19:20Ezra 1, verse 1.
00:19:23Now in the first year
00:19:24of Cyrus,
00:19:25king of Persia,
00:19:27that the word of the Lord
00:19:28by the mouth of Jeremiah
00:19:29might be fulfilled,
00:19:31the Lord stirred up
00:19:32the spirit of Cyrus,
00:19:33king of Persia,
00:19:34that he made a proclamation
00:19:35throughout all his kingdom
00:19:37and put it also in writing,
00:19:40saying,
00:19:41Thus saith Cyrus,
00:19:43king of Persia,
00:19:44The Lord God of heaven
00:19:46hath given me
00:19:47all the kingdoms of the earth,
00:19:49and he hath charged me
00:19:50to build him a house
00:19:52at Jerusalem,
00:19:53which is in Judah.
00:19:55Who is there among you
00:19:56of all his people?
00:19:59His God be with him
00:20:00and let him go up to Jerusalem,
00:20:02which is in Judah,
00:20:03and build the house
00:20:05of the Lord God of Israel.
00:20:07Notice,
00:20:08He is the God,
00:20:11which is in Jerusalem.
00:20:13Monotheistic.
00:20:17He is the God.
00:20:22What a change.
00:20:24What a change.
00:20:26Now regarding this encounter
00:20:28between Daniel and Cyrus,
00:20:30it's interesting,
00:20:31Ellen White makes
00:20:32an enlightening remark.
00:20:34It's found in Prophets and Kings,
00:20:37page 557.
00:20:39She says,
00:20:40As the king saw the words
00:20:41foretelling,
00:20:43more than a hundred years
00:20:44before his birth,
00:20:45the manner in which Babylon
00:20:46should be taken,
00:20:48as he read the message
00:20:49addressed to him
00:20:49by the ruler of the universe,
00:20:52his heart was profoundly moved,
00:20:56and he determined,
00:20:59that means he had a change
00:21:00of mind here,
00:21:01he determined to fulfill
00:21:02his divinely appointed mission.
00:21:05He is going to do
00:21:06what the Lord God
00:21:08has said for him to do.
00:21:10He's going to allow them
00:21:11to rebuild the walls
00:21:12and rebuild the temple,
00:21:13rebuild Jerusalem.
00:21:16There can be no doubt
00:21:17that the Persian Empire
00:21:18came to the knowledge
00:21:19of the true God,
00:21:20primarily through the context
00:21:22of Darius and Cyrus
00:21:23with God's servant,
00:21:26Daniel.
00:21:29Now,
00:21:31I think I might mention
00:21:33that the wise men
00:21:35who came to visit,
00:21:36you know,
00:21:37the infant Jesus,
00:21:38the baby Jesus,
00:21:39when he was born there
00:21:41in Bethlehem,
00:21:43they were not idolaters,
00:21:46like a lot of them
00:21:47were, you know,
00:21:48at that time,
00:21:48but they were most likely
00:21:49from Persia.
00:21:52And Ellen White
00:21:53identifies
00:21:54these wise men
00:21:56from the east
00:21:57as philosophers,
00:21:58which is very interesting.
00:22:00She also states
00:22:00that these magi
00:22:01studied the starry heavens,
00:22:03but they did it
00:22:04with the aid
00:22:04of the Hebrew Scriptures.
00:22:06I want to read that
00:22:08to you.
00:22:11Well,
00:22:12she says this,
00:22:12it's found in
00:22:13The Desire of Ages,
00:22:15pages 59 and 60.
00:22:19The book,
00:22:20Desire of Ages,
00:22:21pages 59 and 60.
00:22:23Notice,
00:22:24she says,
00:22:24quote,
00:22:24the wise men
00:22:25for the east
00:22:26were philosophers.
00:22:28They belonged
00:22:28to a large
00:22:29and influential class
00:22:31that included
00:22:31men of noble birth
00:22:33and comprised
00:22:34much of the wealth
00:22:35and learning
00:22:35of their nation.
00:22:37As these magi
00:22:38studied the starry heavens
00:22:39and sought
00:22:40to fathom the mystery
00:22:41hidden in their
00:22:42bright paths,
00:22:43they beheld
00:22:44the glory of the Creator.
00:22:46Notice,
00:22:46though,
00:22:47she says,
00:22:47seeking clearer knowledge
00:22:49than what they could
00:22:51discern,
00:22:51you know,
00:22:52in the study
00:22:53of the starry heavens,
00:22:56they turned
00:22:58to what?
00:22:59The Hebrew Scriptures.
00:23:01In their own land
00:23:02were treasured
00:23:03prophetic writings
00:23:04that predicted
00:23:05the coming
00:23:06of a divine teacher.
00:23:08Balaam belonged
00:23:09to the magicians,
00:23:10though at one time
00:23:11a prophet of God.
00:23:12By the Holy Spirit
00:23:13he had foretold
00:23:14the prosperity of Israel
00:23:15and the appearing
00:23:16of the Messiah,
00:23:17and his prophecies
00:23:19had been handed down
00:23:20by tradition
00:23:20from century to century.
00:23:22But in the Old Testament,
00:23:24the Savior's advent
00:23:26was more clearly revealed.
00:23:30The wise men
00:23:31had seen a mysterious light
00:23:33in the heavens
00:23:34upon that night
00:23:35when the glory of God
00:23:36flooded the hills
00:23:37of Bethlehem.
00:23:38As the light faded,
00:23:40a luminous star appeared
00:23:41and lingered in the sky.
00:23:43It was not a fixed star
00:23:45nor a planet,
00:23:46and the phenomenon
00:23:46excited the keenest interest.
00:23:49She then goes on
00:23:50and explains
00:23:52the nature
00:23:52of the star.
00:23:55She says
00:23:55that the star
00:23:56was a distant company
00:23:57of shining angels,
00:23:59but of this
00:24:00the wise men
00:24:00were ignorant.
00:24:02Yet they were impressed
00:24:03that the star
00:24:03was of special import
00:24:05to them.
00:24:07They consulted
00:24:08priests
00:24:09and philosophers,
00:24:11and notice again,
00:24:12and searched
00:24:13the scrolls
00:24:14of the ancient records.
00:24:16and then
00:24:19Ellen White
00:24:20tells us
00:24:20that they found
00:24:21the prophecy
00:24:22of Numbers 24-7
00:24:23and so on.
00:24:25But isn't that
00:24:26interesting?
00:24:27How did these guys
00:24:28know about the
00:24:29birth of Jesus?
00:24:30They got into
00:24:31the Hebrew Scriptures,
00:24:32the prophecies.
00:24:34They were Persian
00:24:35philosophers.
00:24:36But even after
00:24:43monotheism
00:24:45took hold
00:24:46in the Persian
00:24:47kingdom,
00:24:50and I'll say
00:24:51take note of this,
00:24:53there were still
00:24:55Babylonian priests
00:24:56of the
00:24:57Daniel chapter 2
00:24:59type
00:24:59in the Persian realm.
00:25:02These priests
00:25:03were angry
00:25:03that their religion
00:25:05had been
00:25:05overthrown.
00:25:07They looked
00:25:08for every
00:25:08opportunity
00:25:09to reestablish
00:25:10their lost
00:25:11dominion.
00:25:14Now,
00:25:15Cyrus died
00:25:16in 530 BC
00:25:17and he was
00:25:17succeeded
00:25:18by Cambysus
00:25:19who governed
00:25:19for seven
00:25:20and a half
00:25:21years.
00:25:22And history
00:25:23tells us
00:25:24that Cambysus
00:25:25went on an
00:25:25expedition to
00:25:26Egypt.
00:25:27When he was
00:25:28in Syria
00:25:29on the way
00:25:29back to Persia,
00:25:31a herald
00:25:31was sent
00:25:32from Shushan
00:25:33who rode
00:25:34into the midst
00:25:34of the army
