The Time of the End Message 23-7: "The Desolater" Episode 7

A Bible study of the book of Daniel, chapter 8. In order to comprehend how the little horn took away the ‘daily,’ we need to answer two fundamental questions:  1. In which sanctuary is the Prince ministering at this point in the vision? 2. What do each of the pieces of furniture in the court and in the holy place represent? In other words, what was the meaning of the altar of sacrifice, the candlestick, the table of shewbread and the altar of incense?  If we are able to determine the answer to these questions, then we will know also what the little horn attempted to take away from the Prince and when. Join me as the Bible gives us the answers!

00:00:19Okay. Hello everyone, I'm Pastor Joel Aswell.

00:00:22I welcome you to our study at this time.

00:00:24We're getting back into Daniel, you know, chapter 8.

00:00:28This is message or episode number 7 in the series of studies of Daniel 8

00:00:34that I've entitled, The Desolator.

00:00:36I hope you're starting to see, those who have been joining us,

00:00:40the characteristics of this desolator, this little horn,

00:00:44the same little horn that we found in Daniel 7.

00:00:46We're discovering all that, aren't we?

00:00:49But we're going to get back into the Bible.

00:00:54And before we do that, we always want to ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.

00:00:57So I invite you to kneel if possible,

00:01:00showing reverence to our God, our Creator.

00:01:05If you can't kneel, that's fine.

00:01:08Prayer is not postured.

00:01:09Let's make sure that we show reverence in our hearts, though,

00:01:13above all things, as we bow our heads together.

00:01:16Father in Heaven, we do thank you so much for the opportunity to open your Holy Word,

00:01:23that you've protected it.

00:01:24You even have told us in your Scriptures that you would protect it.

00:01:30It's amazing to see the fulfillment of such things and promises.

00:01:35Every time we open and read into the Word,

00:01:38we learn so much, and we praise your name for that.

00:01:41Father, only you can pack so much into one word or one sentence.

00:01:46And we are so thankful for the Holy Spirit that guides us through these things

00:01:51and gives us discernment and wisdom and understanding.

00:01:55We praise your name on this Sabbath day that you've created to be with us.

00:01:59We welcome the angels from heaven to join us that are around us.

00:02:05We praise you for that as well.

00:02:06May we have a little peace on earth on this Sabbath day

00:02:11with all the turmoil that's going on around us.

00:02:15May we have truly a rest.

00:02:18Father, we pray for the Holy Spirit to be poured out upon us as we open your Word.

00:02:22And Father, we thank you for Jesus who came to this earth,

00:02:26became like one of us, and will be like one of us through eternity.

00:02:30Something we just can't wrap our minds around.

00:02:33But we praise your name for that.

00:02:35That Jesus was willing to come and die in our place because of our sins.

00:02:42And to impart, impute His righteousness, impart power to overcome.

00:02:49We praise Him for that.

00:02:51Father, we pray forgiveness for our sins.

00:02:53We claim His blood that He shed there at Calvary.

00:02:56And Father, we lift up those who are suffering through tragedies that we see,

00:03:00it seems, every single day.

00:03:02Somewhere in our country and around the world.

00:03:04Lord, we pray He'd be very near to each and every one.

00:03:07Lives are being lost for eternity, and it grieves our hearts.

00:03:10We pray that we can be better messengers of the truth to those around us.

00:03:16And be prepared for what's coming.

00:03:18Give the loud cry to see the end of these things as Jesus returns.

00:03:23Please, Lord, give me the words to speak this morning.

00:03:25May they always be the truth.

00:03:29Always and never want to lead anyone astray.

00:03:32So guide my lips here, I pray, in the name of Jesus for these things.

00:03:38Amen.

00:03:40And amen.

00:03:41Amen.

00:03:44Well, friends, like I said, we are in episode 7 of the study of Daniel 8.

00:03:53Call it the desolator.

00:03:55The desolator.

00:03:56And in part 6, last time, we learned 15 more points from Daniel 8, verses 11 and 12.

00:04:01And I want to share them with you now as we begin.

00:04:04We'll get a refresher here.

00:04:06So then we can go on into Daniel.

00:04:09There's so much.

00:04:10Like I prayed and praised God.

00:04:12He packs so much into like so little.

00:04:15That we can just keep unpacking and unpacking and unpacking and just learn and learn and learn.

00:04:19And I praise His name.

00:04:20It's a remarkable thing.

00:04:22So as we looked at Daniel 8, verses 11 and 12, in episode 6 last time,

00:04:29we learned that the phrase in Daniel 8, verse 11 should not read,

00:04:33By Him the daily was taken away.

00:04:36Right?

00:04:37But rather, From Him the daily was taken away.

00:04:41We also learned the meaning of 2 Thessalonians 2 should not be imposed on Daniel chapter 8.

00:04:51And this is where I spoke about one of the issues that William Miller had in the early Advent movement.

00:04:58He caught on the wrong thing.

00:05:01I'm not saying he, you know, did.

00:05:04Don't get me wrong.

00:05:06I love William Miller.

00:05:06He's brought millions of people into the truth.

00:05:09But he was bringing 2 Thessalonians into Daniel 8 in the wrong way.

00:05:14Let's say it that way.

00:05:15And that's what we learned.

00:05:16In 2 Thessalonians 2, verses 6 and 7,

00:05:18the Apostle Paul referred to the removal of the mysterious restrainer

00:05:22that allowed for the transition of imperial Rome to papal Rome.

00:05:28And we covered that.

00:05:29That was like the third time I kind of covered that.

00:05:31That can be a tough one.

00:05:32That's like Peter says.

00:05:33Sometimes the things that Paul says can be hard to understand.

00:05:37And so you just got to keep, it's like pounding that rock.

00:05:40You just got to keep pounding and pounding that rock.

00:05:42And eventually you get little nuggets of the truth.

00:05:47Amen?

00:05:49We learned that the fall of the Roman Empire led to the liberation of the Roman pontiff,

00:05:55that bishop there in Rome.

00:05:57We learned that Romulus Augustulus,

00:05:59who was the last emperor of the Western Empire of Rome,

00:06:02was deposed in the year 476 A.D.,

00:06:06leaving the entire empire without a civil ruler,

00:06:11I'll say in the West,

00:06:12a civil ruler who could preserve law and order.

00:06:17They didn't have it.

00:06:19We learned that in the midst of this chaotic situation,

00:06:22that the bishop of Rome was enticed to take the reins of civil power

00:06:28and bring about order in the empire.

00:06:30That's how there was this transition, you see.

00:06:33And we also learned that the bishop of Rome was not only the spiritual leader of the church,

00:06:38but now he became the temporal ruler of the state.

00:06:41And we covered, actually, a lot of this in the study of Daniel 7, right?

00:06:50But it's good.

00:06:51You got to keep going back, like I said,

00:06:53and pounding that rock and pounding that rock.

00:06:55And so he became the temporal ruler of the state.

00:06:59And so the imperial Roman Empire,

00:07:02that restrainer that Paul talks about in 2 Thessalonians 2,

00:07:06was taken out of the way to give way to the papacy.

00:07:10We learned that the civil power was taken out of the way of the bishop of Rome

00:07:16when the papacy first ascended to power.

00:07:19The civil power, France, remember,

00:07:22then took the papacy that had the spiritual sword.

00:07:26France was the civil sword.

00:07:29Papacy was the spiritual sword.

00:07:30They took him out of the way in 1798 AD, you recall.

00:07:34We learned again that the state will once again be taken out of the way

00:07:38and the papacy will exert its power once more

00:07:41in order to enforce the mark of the beast,

00:07:45which we have found to be,

00:07:47and we'll continue to learn more and more about this,

00:07:50a national and then worldwide worship law

00:07:54worshiping a Sunday,

00:07:57the Sunday, just like Constantine.

00:07:59We read about that in Revelation 13.

00:08:04We learned that temed means continual.

00:08:08It's used in Daniel 8 to signify a continual something, right?

00:08:13We found that the focus of Daniel 8 and 9 is the sanctuary service,

00:08:17and therefore the word daily must be understood

00:08:19in the context of the sanctuary.

00:08:23We also learned that when the word temed is used

00:08:28in the context of the sanctuary,

00:08:30it always, without exception,

00:08:33refers to the daily ministration of the priest in the court

00:08:36and in the holy place.

00:08:38That's a key that I think sometimes we lose sight of.

00:08:43You've got to think on the terms of...

00:08:45Remember when those have been with me all through the study.

00:08:48We started with Daniel 1.

00:08:49Actually, we started looking at principles of study and such,

00:08:53and I laid out what we were going to do.

00:08:56One of it was we were going to look at the Word of God,

00:08:59we were going to use resources,

00:09:00the spirit of prophecy, and those things.

00:09:04One of the things that I showed was

00:09:06we have to have a right understanding

00:09:08of the sanctuary and its services.

00:09:13Because the word temed talks about it daily,

00:09:16and it revolves around things that are done

00:09:18in the sanctuary.

00:09:20This is why.

00:09:21And this has caused a lot of confusion

00:09:23because a number of people,

00:09:25and probably millions of Christians,

00:09:28they've been taught a false theory

00:09:33about the sanctuary.

00:09:34The sanctuary is not important.

00:09:37What other religion in the world,

00:09:39other than the Jews,

00:09:40and even they don't teach it,

00:09:42probably like they used to,

00:09:43teaches what other Christian faith

00:09:49teaches the sanctuary and its services

00:09:53in relation to prophecy?

00:09:56I'll leave that for you to look that up.

00:10:01And so, we learned that it refers to the daily ministration,

00:10:05temed, of the priest in the court and in the holy place.

00:10:08We learned that the word temed

00:10:09is never used in the Old Testament

00:10:10to describe anything that transpires

00:10:12in the most holy place of the sanctuary.

00:10:15And that's very important as well.

00:10:18We also learned that the daily is a symbol

00:10:21of the continual ministry of Jesus Christ

00:10:24in the heavenly sanctuary,

00:10:25forgiving our sins,

00:10:27and providing power for us to live changed lives

00:10:29in fulfillment of the new covenant promises.

00:10:31Victory over sin and eternal life.

00:10:34The promises of it.

00:10:36And I promise you,

00:10:40I will make this clearer,

00:10:41as clear as I can.

00:10:44I'm a human.

00:10:45I'll make it as clear as possible,

00:10:48that I possibly can,

00:10:50to you in coming studies.

00:10:53And that you,

00:10:54I pray,

00:10:56that you'll see it

00:10:57clearer and clearer.

00:10:58Believe me,

00:10:59the devil doesn't want this truth out there.

00:11:02He doesn't.

00:11:02It exposes him.

00:11:05And it leaves no doubts.

00:11:08You see.

00:11:09So he fights against it.

00:11:11He brings counterfeit theories and stuff.

00:11:13And of course,

00:11:14as time goes on,

00:11:15we get closer to the return of Christ,

00:11:17more and more,

00:11:18truth is revealed to the remnant.

00:11:22And it,

00:11:23the reason is,

00:11:24it helps to settle us into the truth,

00:11:28you see.

00:11:30So that it,

00:11:31we're prepared for the final battle.

00:11:35And so,

00:11:36I pray,

00:11:37that I can present these things,

00:11:38in such a way,

00:11:39that you can see it,

00:11:40friends,

00:11:41and you can see it.

00:11:42And that weighs heavy on my heart.

00:11:43Believe me.

00:11:44And then we learn,

00:11:45that papal Rome,

00:11:46the little horn,

00:11:47was going to attempt to take away from the prince of the host,

00:11:51and who's the prince of the host?

00:11:53Jesus,

00:11:53our heavenly high priest.

00:11:55He was going to attempt to take away from Jesus,

00:11:58our heavenly high priest,

00:11:59the daily,

00:12:01which again,

00:12:01his administration in the court,

00:12:03in the holy place of the sanctuary.

00:12:04I'll have to make that more clear as we go on.

00:12:10And so,

00:12:10that's what we learned in our last study,

00:12:15episode 6.

00:12:16Now,

00:12:17we're still looking at Daniel 8,

00:12:19and verses 11,

00:12:22and 11 and 12.

00:12:23Let's just read Daniel 8,

00:12:26verses 11 and 12,

00:12:28as we get rolling here.

00:12:29Daniel 8,

00:12:32verse 11.

00:12:32Yea,

00:12:32he magnified himself,

00:12:36even to the prince of the host,

00:12:38and by him,

00:12:39remember,

00:12:39that should be from him,

00:12:41the daily sacrifice.

00:12:43Sacrifice is not in the original.

00:12:45We'll talk about that,

00:12:47again and again and again,

00:12:48hopefully to make it clear.

00:12:51That was added.

00:12:53It's a misapplication.

00:12:56And so,

00:12:57if you,

00:12:59see me reading,

00:13:01anything that has to do with the daily,

00:13:03and sacrifice,

00:13:04I've gotten in such a habit of leaving it out.

00:13:07So,

00:13:08I'm sorry if it confuses you.

00:13:12And by him,

00:13:13the daily,

00:13:14I leave sacrifice out.

00:13:16By him,

00:13:16the daily was taken away,

00:13:18and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

00:13:21We're going to learn about that.

00:13:22Verse 12.

00:13:22And a host was given him against the daily,

00:13:25we're going to learn about that,

00:13:26by reason of transgression,

00:13:28and it cast down the truth to the ground,

00:13:32and it practiced,

00:13:34and prospered this little horn.

00:13:39And there's a lot to learn here in these things.

00:13:43And I hope that you've seen in all of our previous studies,

00:13:48we go line upon line,

00:13:50we try to define words,

00:13:52and all these things,

00:13:53so we have a right understanding of the passage.

00:13:57Right?

00:13:57That's what we want.

00:13:58We want to know,

00:13:59what is the Bible telling us here?

00:14:02And sometimes the English is tough.

00:14:04They translated the Hebrew,

00:14:06and used certain English words that,

00:14:09eh,

00:14:09not as good,

00:14:11it turns out.

00:14:11And the reason we think that

00:14:14isn't because,

00:14:15you know,

00:14:16we think so much of ourselves

00:14:17and our intellect.

00:14:19It's because we're putting the puzzle pieces together,

00:14:22and some of those English words

00:14:23just don't make sense

00:14:24with the context of what we're putting together.

00:14:27A different English word

00:14:29that still fits within a definition of the Hebrew

00:14:32turns out to be better.

00:14:35And I think you'll see that more and more

00:14:38as we dig into some of these things.

00:14:40So it's important to understand

00:14:41some of the linguistics of it,

00:14:43and the Hebrew,

00:14:43and learning.

00:14:45You don't have to learn Hebrew and Greek.

00:14:47I can't quote you verse by verse

00:14:49like Brother Grossball can.

00:14:53He reads right out of the Greek Bible.

00:14:55I can't do that.

00:14:57But we have resources.

00:15:00The Bible was for the common person,

00:15:03believe it or not.

00:15:04We all can understand it.

00:15:06And that's the great thing about God.

00:15:08No one is left out.

00:15:10He's no respecter of persons.

00:15:13And so we're going to learn about these things.

00:15:15I hope you've seen it through all of our studies.

00:15:17We break these things down.

00:15:19And if you don't understand it,

00:15:20I encourage you,

00:15:21dig into it yourself.

00:15:24I mean,

00:15:25I don't like to say trust me

00:15:27just because I'm a human being.

00:15:29But I'm doing the best that I can to explain it

00:15:32in the way I understand it.

00:15:35And so always check me out.

00:15:36Pastor Brooks always said,

00:15:37check me out.

00:15:39I always loved that about him.

00:15:42I miss Pastor Brooks.

00:15:45But notice this.

00:15:46We read Daniel 8, verses 11 and 12.

00:15:49Bible Research Institute.

00:15:52This is their volume 2 of their synod on Daniel,

00:15:55page 514.

00:15:55Since this passage as a whole

00:15:58is concerned with the actions of the little horn,

00:16:02it is evident that it is the power responsible

00:16:04for taking away the prince's Tamed ministry.

00:16:07The daily ministry.

00:16:10That's what they say.

00:16:11End quote.

00:16:13And then notice this quote from Dalrymple

00:16:15in his article,

00:16:17The Mystery of Iniquity.

00:16:18It was in the Signs of the Times,

00:16:19October 11, 1932.

00:16:21It's interesting.

00:16:22He says,

00:16:23We understand that when the prophecy speaks

00:16:25of the daily being taken away,

00:16:28it refers to the fact that the time would come

00:16:31when efforts would be made

00:16:33to separate people from God

00:16:35and to divert their minds

00:16:37from the one sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ.

00:16:42There would be an attempt to take away from men,

00:16:46notice this, he says,

00:16:47the constant and daily intercession of Jesus,

00:16:50whoever intercedes for us in the heavenly sanctuary.

00:16:53Now, believe me,

00:16:54I'm going to lay down evidence of this.

00:16:56I'm not just throwing a quote out there

00:16:57and saying,

00:16:58Yeah, take this guy's word for it.

00:17:00But this helps.

00:17:02It helps us to understand.

00:17:04He says,

00:17:05There would be an attempt to take away from men

00:17:07the constant and daily intercession of Jesus,

00:17:11whoever intercedes for us in the heavenly sanctuary,

00:17:15not made with hands,

00:17:16and for it substitute another intercession,

00:17:21not divine.

00:17:23There would be an effort to take away

00:17:25the bread of life from men

00:17:26and offer in its place another bread,

00:17:29which could not nourish the soul.

00:17:31And we'll find this out.

00:17:32That's why we've got to understand

00:17:33what the sanctuary and the services are about.

00:17:36There would be an attempt to draw the eyes of men

00:17:38away from the Lamb of God,

00:17:40which taketh away the sin of the world,

00:17:42John 1.29,

00:17:42and fasten them upon a human means

00:17:46of atonement.

00:17:50Remarkable

00:17:51what Dalrymple is saying there.

00:17:54It goes right hand and fist in

00:17:57with understanding the sanctuary

00:17:59and what we're reading here

00:18:00and trying to understand in Daniel 8,

00:18:03specifically verses 11 and 12.

00:18:05Now, I think I mentioned this

00:18:12the last time we were together.

00:18:16In order to comprehend

00:18:17how the little horn took away the daily,

00:18:22whatever that may be,

00:18:23let's set that aside for now.

00:18:25We've talked about it before,

00:18:26but let's set it aside for now.

00:18:28In order to comprehend

00:18:29how the little horn took away the daily,

00:18:32we need to answer two fundamental questions.

00:18:34They just jump right out at us.

00:18:37When you read Daniel 8,

00:18:39verses 11 and 12,

00:18:40these questions should jump out at you,

00:18:42actually,

00:18:43in trying to understand the daily.

00:18:45What does it mean

00:18:46that the little horn took away the daily?

00:18:50Right?

00:18:52The first question is,

00:18:54in which sanctuary

00:18:56is the prince ministering

00:18:58at this point in the vision?

00:19:01That's a very important question.

00:19:04Is he talking about

00:19:06the heavenly sanctuary?

00:19:12What sanctuary is he at?

00:19:14Is he in the heavenly sanctuary?

00:19:15Is there an earthly sanctuary?

00:19:17Most of Christendom believes

00:19:19that the Jews are going to

00:19:22have the sacrifices again

00:19:24and all that.

00:19:25That's part of the

00:19:26futurist view

00:19:28of prophecy.

00:19:33So we need to answer that question.

00:19:35In which sanctuary

00:19:36is the prince ministering

00:19:37at this point in the vision?

00:19:39Second question.

00:19:40What do each of the pieces

00:19:41of the furniture

00:19:42in the court

00:19:43and in the holy place

00:19:45represent?

00:19:46Remember,

00:19:47the word

00:19:48tamed

00:19:49is not associated

00:19:50with the most holy place,

00:19:52but it is associated

00:19:54with the courtyard

00:19:55and the holy place.

00:19:57And so,

00:19:57what do each of the pieces

00:19:59of the furniture

00:19:59in the court

00:20:00and in the holy place

00:20:02represent?

00:20:03In other words,

00:20:04what was the meaning

00:20:05of the altar of sacrifice?

00:20:07What was the meaning

00:20:08of the candlestick?

00:20:09What did they represent?

00:20:10What is the meaning

00:20:11of the table of showbread

00:20:13and the altar of incense?

00:20:15We need to understand.

00:20:16When we come to understand that,

00:20:18if we are able

00:20:20to determine the answer

00:20:21to these questions,

00:20:22my friends,

00:20:23then we will know

00:20:24also what the little horn

00:20:26attempted to take away

00:20:27from the prince

00:20:28and when.

00:20:31So,

00:20:32let's answer

00:20:33the first question.

00:20:35Okay?

00:20:36First question.

00:20:37In which sanctuary

00:20:38is the prince

00:20:40ministering at this point

00:20:42in the vision?

00:20:46Let's answer

00:20:46the first question.

00:20:48That question.

00:20:49Now,

00:20:49we've already identified

00:20:50the prince as who?

00:20:52The prince is Jesus.

00:20:54And where does Jesus

00:20:55minister today?

00:20:58Can you answer that?

00:21:00Where is Jesus now?

00:21:01Where is he ministering?

00:21:04Well,

00:21:05we're told in Matthew

00:21:05chapter 21

00:21:07verses 12 and 13.

00:21:08Let's go back

00:21:09into the Gospels.

00:21:11We're told there

00:21:12in Matthew

00:21:13chapter 21

00:21:14that at the end

00:21:15of the triumphal entry,

00:21:17Jesus entered

00:21:17the temple of God

00:21:18and what did he do?

00:21:19He called it

00:21:20my house,

00:21:21didn't he?

00:21:21Let's read it.

00:21:24Matthew 21

00:21:24verse 12.

00:21:25And Jesus went

00:21:26into the temple

00:21:27of God

00:21:28and cast out

00:21:29all of them

00:21:29that sold

00:21:30and bought

00:21:30in the temple

00:21:31and overthrew

00:21:32the tables

00:21:33of the money changers

00:21:34and the seats

00:21:34of them

00:21:35that sold doves

00:21:36verse 13

00:21:37and said unto them

00:21:38it is written

00:21:39my house

00:21:40he called the temple

00:21:43what?

00:21:44My house

00:21:45shall be called

00:21:45the house of prayer

00:21:46but she had made it

00:21:49a den of thieves.

00:21:50And by the way

00:21:51that's exactly

00:21:52what the little

00:21:53horn is doing.

00:21:57Hope you can see that.

00:22:00So he called it

00:22:01my house.

00:22:02However,

00:22:04go a few chapters

00:22:05further

00:22:05in Matthew 23

00:22:07verses 37 and 38

00:22:09notice what we read

00:22:10Jesus there

00:22:11standing over Jerusalem

00:22:12he's rocking back

00:22:13forth

00:22:13he's

00:22:14shook up

00:22:16he's weeping

00:22:16he's looking

00:22:17at Jerusalem

00:22:18and he says

00:22:18oh Jerusalem

00:22:19Jerusalem

00:22:20thou that

00:22:21killest the prophets

00:22:23and stonest them

00:22:24which are sent

00:22:24unto thee

00:22:25how often

00:22:26would I have

00:22:27gathered thy

00:22:27children together

00:22:28even as a

00:22:29hen gathereth

00:22:30her chickens

00:22:31and her wings

00:22:32and ye

00:22:33would not

00:22:34he says

00:22:35look at verse 38

00:22:36behold

00:22:37your house

00:22:38he says

00:22:40is left

00:22:40unto you

00:22:41desolate

00:22:42so just a few

00:22:46days after

00:22:46Jesus called it

00:22:47my house

00:22:48Jesus announced

00:22:51to the Jewish

00:22:51leaders that

00:22:52your house

00:22:53is left

00:22:54unto you

00:22:54desolate

00:22:55the Jerusalem

00:22:59temple was no

00:23:00longer his house

00:23:01or the temple

00:23:03of God

00:23:03because it had

00:23:04been forsaken

00:23:05by the presence

00:23:05of Jesus

00:23:06he left

00:23:07a lot of

00:23:12things that we

00:23:12learn from

00:23:13from this

00:23:14and one thing

00:23:15that I

00:23:16because I've

00:23:16dealt much

00:23:17of my

00:23:18ministerial life

00:23:20dealing with

00:23:20organizing home

00:23:21churches

00:23:22and teaching

00:23:22what is

00:23:24who and what

00:23:25the church

00:23:25is

00:23:26I read

00:23:29scriptures

00:23:29and things

00:23:30pop out

00:23:30at me

00:23:31you've heard

00:23:31me say

00:23:31many many

00:23:32times

00:23:32there are

00:23:32only two

00:23:33spirits

00:23:34in the

00:23:34world

00:23:34there's the

00:23:36spirit of

00:23:36Christ

00:23:37and the

00:23:37spirit

00:23:37of

00:23:37Antichrist

00:23:38there are

00:23:39only two

00:23:39churches
