We are starting the next chapter in the book of Daniel, chapter 8. In Daniel Chapter 7 we were introduced to the rise of the Bold Pretender—the Little Horn power in its Papal roots, and his war against the saints of God by persecuting them and thinking to change the times and laws of God. The same Little Horn in its pagan and papal roots is revealed in more detail in chapter 8, who has become The Desolater that "waxed exceeding great," whose blasphemies reach unto heaven, to the Prince of princes, to destroy the daily.

00:00:00Hello everyone, God bless you and I welcome you, I'm Pastor Joe Lasswell and we're about
00:00:15to get back into our study in prophecy.
00:00:19We started the last time that we were together, Daniel chapter 8, in a series of studies that
00:00:28I have entitled The Desolator.
00:00:30We're going to find out why as we go along in the study.
00:00:34This is episode 2, episode 2 of this study series of Daniel chapter 8.
00:00:41It goes right along with Daniel chapter 7 as we'll see as we get into it here, but before
00:00:46we begin we want to ask the Lord to bless us, so I invite you to kneel if possible, show
00:00:51reverent awe to our Creator if it's not possible to do so.
00:00:58Let's make sure that our attitude, our hearts and our minds are bowing together as we come
00:01:06before Him in prayer.
00:01:08Father in Heaven, we thank You so very, very much for Your wonderful blessings that You
00:01:13continually pour out upon us.
00:01:15May we recognize them and give You praise.
00:01:18Father, we thank You so much for the protection of heavenly angels.
00:01:25We know that the devil is going about and he's wanting to destroy God's people and those
00:01:32who want to know the truth through persecutions and a number of things that He's unleashing
00:01:39upon the earth.
00:01:42Father, we praise Your name and Your love for each and every one of us.
00:01:46We praise You for the Holy Spirit.
00:01:49We ask that the Holy Spirit be sent to guide and direct us as we open Your Word together
00:01:54here in reading and studying Daniel chapter 8.
00:01:58We ask the Holy Spirit to give us each discernment and wisdom as we see these words.
00:02:04Help us to put our thinking caps on and to reason together with Thee.
00:02:10Father, we thank You for Jesus who gave up all Heaven to come to this terrible planet that
00:02:17had betrayed Him and You and had rebelled and He came to save us.
00:02:24He wanted us to enjoy and be a part of the family again and live forever in Heaven even if
00:02:30He were not to.
00:02:32What an incredible thought, incredible love.
00:02:34Father, we praise You for Jesus.
00:02:36We ask forgiveness for our sins.
00:02:39We claim His blood that was shed there on the cross.
00:02:42And we pray for the power to be overcomers, to be a part of the redeemed who welcome Him
00:02:48when He returns very, very soon.
00:02:50Please be with those who couldn't be with us here this morning, those who are suffering
00:02:54around the world through tragedies and storms and just terrible, terrible things that we
00:03:03are witnessing as the devil strikes out to destroy people.
00:03:08We pray You'd be very near to them.
00:03:09Be with our children and our youth.
00:03:12Help us to be shining examples to them that they may come to know Thee, the true God.
00:03:17And be with our neighbors in the world.
00:03:19Please be with me and give me the words to speak here today.
00:03:22I humbly ask these favors in the blessed name of Jesus, who is so worthy.
00:03:29Amen and amen.
00:03:33Again, episode two of our study, The Desolator.
00:03:40The Desolator, Daniel chapter eight.
00:03:43In episode one, I spent a good amount of time speaking about how the book of Daniel is actually
00:03:50two books.
00:03:50And it is.
00:03:52If you step back and look at the bigger, larger context of Daniel, chapters one through seven
00:04:01is book one, and chapters eight through 12 is book two.
00:04:06And I made an emphasis that it's very important to note and remember that Daniel, chapters eight
00:04:13through 12, is the sealed book of Daniel that's spoken of in Daniel 12 and verse four.
00:04:18Do you recall that?
00:04:19Do you recall that?
00:04:19I hope you do.
00:04:21As well as, and I had you make note of this, it's the little book that we find spoken of
00:04:28in Revelation chapter 10.
00:04:30Let's read these two verses again.
00:04:32Let's first go to Daniel chapter 12 and verse four.
00:04:36Daniel 12 and verse four.
00:04:40It says, quote, but thou, O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book.
00:04:50Seal the book.
00:04:51Even to the time of the end, and we learned in our study of Daniel seven, that we are living
00:04:57in the time of the end.
00:04:59The time of the end came in 1798 AD.
00:05:01So, we've been in the time of the end for a while, and we're told here, Daniel was told
00:05:07to seal the book, even to the time of the end, many shall run to and fro, knowledge shall
00:05:12be increased.
00:05:14And we found that Revelation 10 and verses one and two tell us about this book being opened.
00:05:23Verse one says, I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud,
00:05:27and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars
00:05:34of fire.
00:05:36Verse two, and he had in his hand a little book.
00:05:39And what about that little book?
00:05:40Says in Revelation there, verse two, the book open.
00:05:46He had in his hand a little book open, and he set his right foot upon the sea, his left
00:05:50foot on the earth.
00:05:51And so, Daniel 12, verse four, he's told to seal the book till the time of the end.
00:05:57We're in the time of the end.
00:05:59We've learned about that time, the prophecies of Daniel 8 through 12 were unsealed.
00:06:07They were open.
00:06:08This little book was opened.
00:06:14Now, I want you to notice this statement.
00:06:17It's from the book Acts of the Apostles, page 585.
00:06:25Notice, quote, in the Revelation, all the books of the Bible meet and end.
00:06:30Here is the complement of the book of Daniel.
00:06:33One is a prophecy, the other a revelation.
00:06:36The book that was sealed is not the revelation, but that portion of the prophecy of Daniel relating
00:06:43to the last days.
00:06:44The angel commanded, but thou, O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, even to the
00:06:52time of the end, quoting Daniel 12, 4, end quote.
00:06:56And so, we see here that chapters 8 through 12, we're beginning to look into Daniel chapter
00:07:028.
00:07:05This prophecy was sealed until the time of the end.
00:07:09And we spoke about, you know, how knowledge shall be increased.
00:07:14In episode 1, I talked about that this is about increased knowledge of the prophecies here
00:07:24in Daniels 8 through 12.
00:07:26And the rest of Daniels, where that goes.
00:07:28But mainly, that part, and the emphasis of these chapters, was the 2300 days, Daniel 8, verse
00:07:3614, which we will get in depth on as we go on.
00:07:41But what about the first book of Daniel?
00:07:45You know?
00:07:47Chapters 1 through 7.
00:07:48Do we see a correlation between those chapters in the book of Revelation?
00:07:53The stories, you know, of the historical portions of Daniel.
00:07:59And I'm talking about Daniels chapter 1 and 3 and 4, 5 and 6.
00:08:04You know, they actually illustrate in symbolic form the prophetic portions of the book.
00:08:09And I want you to recognize this because this will help us as we go along.
00:08:16And you'll see the correlation between Daniel and the book of Revelation.
00:08:22If you haven't seen it already, you should.
00:08:27But you'll see it more and more and more.
00:08:30Daniel 1 is actually a foreshadowing of what God's end-time remnant people will be like.
00:08:35You realize that?
00:08:37They will be a people of principle who would rather die than disobey God.
00:08:42In Daniel 1, the two sides in the conflict are introduced.
00:08:50You have two kings.
00:08:53You have Jehoiakim versus King Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon.
00:08:58You have two gods.
00:09:00There's Yahweh versus Marduk.
00:09:03One of the gods is a major god of Babylon.
00:09:06You have two cities.
00:09:07You have Babylon versus Jerusalem.
00:09:09You have two temples there in the city.
00:09:12You have God's temple in Jerusalem versus Marduk's temple in Babylon.
00:09:16You have two peoples, the Hebrews versus the Babylonians.
00:09:21You've heard me say, anybody who's seen me preach and been with me for long,
00:09:26there are only two spirits in this world.
00:09:30There's the spirit of Christ and the spirit of Antichrist.
00:09:32And here in Daniel 1, you're seeing those two sides battle.
00:09:37They're having the battle.
00:09:39In the introduction to the book, we find a contrast between Babylon and God's people in the time of the end.
00:09:49And those familiar with the Bible's truth about end time of the end will find that these things sound familiar, don't they?
00:09:56Notice that the king, Nebuchadnezzar, attempted to change, and I'm speaking about Daniel chapter 1 now.
00:10:07He attempted to change the mindset and the conduct of Daniel and his friends in four significant ways.
00:10:14This will be played out again, friends.
00:10:21This is why I'm sharing this with you.
00:10:23First, he attempted to do it by having them enrolled in the University of Babylon.
00:10:29He even determined their curriculum.
00:10:32The state determined the curriculum for the students in the public school system.
00:10:37Was prayer to the Creator God allowed in that system?
00:10:48Something to think about.
00:10:50You see, he felt that by teaching them the culture, the philosophy, the language, and the religion of Babylon,
00:10:58their way of thinking would be changed.
00:11:01The king hoped that this would cause a shift in their worldview, you see.
00:11:08Yet the Hebrew worthies never used the divination methods that they learned in the university.
00:11:15Prayer, you see, was their means of communing with their God.
00:11:19And when push came to shove, they were faithful to Jehovah.
00:11:24Secondly, the king attempted to change their allegiance by continually rubbing it in their face
00:11:33that the God of Babylon was superior to their God.
00:11:37I mean, after all, if their God was greater than Marduk,
00:11:41why were they a captive in Babylon?
00:11:44Right?
00:11:46It's obvious that the king was not able to convince or compel them
00:11:49because they proved themselves loyal only to the true God,
00:11:54even in the face of death.
00:11:56Remember, Nebuchadnezzar was going to kill all the magicians and astrologers
00:12:04and all the wise men in Babylon, including Daniel, right?
00:12:10Third, the king attempted to change their thinking and conduct
00:12:15by appointing their food and their drink.
00:12:19But they refused to eat the Babylonian food and drink its wine.
00:12:24And instead, they partook of the Hebrew diet, didn't they?
00:12:28And fourth, the king attempted to change their allegiance by changing their names
00:12:33from Hebrew names that honored their God
00:12:36to Babylonian names that honored the Babylonian gods.
00:12:40You can read about that in Daniel 4.
00:12:43Yet in the book, we never find Daniel and his friends,
00:12:47his three friends, remember,
00:12:49they never used their Babylonian names.
00:12:51Whenever they or God referred to them or they referred to themselves,
00:12:54they always used their Hebrew names.
00:12:58Check that out.
00:13:00And so we find that God's loyal servants were a people of principle.
00:13:07Daniel purposed in his heart.
00:13:09That means he made a decision of his will that he would not defile himself.
00:13:15And this decision of the will was exhibited in their conduct.
00:13:20Daniel and his friends were faithful in the small tests
00:13:22and therefore proved faithful in the large tests.
00:13:27Notice this from the book Councils on Health, page 66.
00:13:33Something to think about here.
00:13:34Quote,
00:13:34What if Daniel and his companions had made a compromise with those heathen officers
00:13:38and had yielded to the pressure of the occasion
00:13:41by eating and drinking as was customary with the Babylonians?
00:13:45That single instance of departure from principle
00:13:50would have weakened their sense of right and their abhorrence of wrong.
00:13:55Indulgence of appetite would have involved the sacrifice of physical vigor,
00:14:00clearness of intellect, and spiritual power.
00:14:04One wrong step would probably have led to others.
00:14:07Hasn't that been your experience?
00:14:10It's been my experience.
00:14:12One wrong step leads to another.
00:14:15She goes on and says,
00:14:18Until their connection with heaven being severed,
00:14:20they would have been swept away by temptation.
00:14:26End quote.
00:14:27Now that's chapter 1.
00:14:29Sounds a lot like what the experience of the remnant people of God
00:14:32in the times of the end will deal with
00:14:36before the end comes, doesn't it?
00:14:39What about Daniel 3?
00:14:42Well, Daniel 3 and chapter 6
00:14:44reveals that Daniel and his friends
00:14:46foreshadow the character
00:14:48that the final generation of God's people will have
00:14:51before Jesus returns.
00:14:53I mean, think about it.
00:14:57Their worldview
00:14:58will not be changed by the vain philosophies of spiritual Babylon.
00:15:03It's all about me and my idols, isn't it?
00:15:06They will not receive the name of the beast.
00:15:10They reject it.
00:15:11They will not drink Babylon's wine.
00:15:15That's false doctrine.
00:15:16And they'll not be intimidated by the idea
00:15:19that they are an insignificant minority
00:15:21that cannot be right.
00:15:24There's something wrong with you,
00:15:26you blasphemers, right?
00:15:29But they stand on the word of God.
00:15:35Daniel 3 foreshadows the crisis
00:15:38in Revelation chapter 13.
00:15:40I hope you saw that when we studied Daniel 3
00:15:43and made that plain.
00:15:45I hope.
00:15:47The chapter describes what happens
00:15:48when a political power establishes religion.
00:15:52This story prefigures that symbolic story
00:15:55of Revelation 13, verses 11 to 18
00:15:58with the land beast there in Revelation 13.
00:16:02And the two passages have many common details.
00:16:06In both, there's a conflict
00:16:08between the religion of Babylon
00:16:09and the religion of God's faithful remnant.
00:16:14Right?
00:16:14The king did not like the perspective of history
00:16:18that God had revealed in Daniel 2, if you recall.
00:16:21So the Chaldeans, what they did,
00:16:22they suggested that he make an image.
00:16:24Like the one he had seen in his dream of Daniel 2,
00:16:27but in this time, make it entirely of gold.
00:16:31And in this way, he would be making
00:16:33an in-your-face statement to God, the Creator,
00:16:36that he was in control of history, not God.
00:16:39He was in control of the times and laws, right?
00:16:43And his kingdom would be eternal.
00:16:47In both Daniel and Revelation,
00:16:49we find a reference to a beast.
00:16:51In both books, we find an image of the beast.
00:16:57In both books, we have a record of numbers
00:16:59that bear a relationship with the sun.
00:17:03The number 666 is involved in both.
00:17:06Remember, I spent some time in those chapters
00:17:09showing how the priests of the major religions
00:17:14in Babylon and worship of the sun,
00:17:16and they had the gold medallions,
00:17:17the gold crowns stamped with the number 666.
00:17:20It played a very big part
00:17:23in the pagan religions of that day.
00:17:30In both books,
00:17:31people from every nation tongue
00:17:33and people are commanded to worship the image
00:17:35there in the plains of Dura.
00:17:36In both books, there is a death decree
00:17:40against those who fail to obey
00:17:41the order to worship the image, right?
00:17:45The image of the beast.
00:17:47In both books, there is a faithful
00:17:48and insignificant remnant
00:17:51whose life is governed by principle.
00:17:54Remember, those three Hebrews stood.
00:17:57They didn't bow.
00:17:59They would rather die than worship
00:18:01the image of the beast.
00:18:03There was a shaking in the valley of Dura,
00:18:07and this is repeated in the enforcement
00:18:09of the mark of the beast.
00:18:12In both books,
00:18:14conflict is over worship
00:18:17and obedience to the commandments of God.
00:18:20In particular, the first table of the law.
00:18:24In both books,
00:18:25the religious leaders accuse the people of God
00:18:28before the civil power.
00:18:30Right?
00:18:31In Revelation,
00:18:33it's the apostate Protestantisms
00:18:35that are pushing this
00:18:36to worship the image.
00:18:41The wrath of the king
00:18:42prefigures the wrath of the dragon
00:18:45against the final remnant
00:18:46that keep the commandments of God
00:18:48and have the testimony of Jesus.
00:18:50You know,
00:18:51Ellen White remarks,
00:18:55makes some interesting remarks
00:18:57about the king's body language
00:18:58when he spoke the words there
00:19:00in Daniel 3.15.
00:19:01She says that he spoke these words
00:19:03with hands stretched upward in defiance.
00:19:07Like he's defying God.
00:19:09Remember, the title of that series was,
00:19:11Who is this God?
00:19:14Right?
00:19:15That's what Nebuchadnezzar was saying.
00:19:18And then she also saw his face,
00:19:20the anger on his face.
00:19:22And she said,
00:19:24quote,
00:19:24Satanic attributes
00:19:26made his countenance appear
00:19:27as the countenance
00:19:28of a demon.
00:19:33Remember,
00:19:34two sides
00:19:35in this conflict.
00:19:39Daniel 3
00:19:41is a vivid illustration
00:19:43of what happens
00:19:43when religious power
00:19:44influences civil power
00:19:46to establish
00:19:47religious observances.
00:19:49This chapter,
00:19:51it shows what will happen
00:19:53when the government
00:19:54of the land beast
00:19:55violates the establishment
00:19:56clause of the First Amendment
00:19:57to the United States Constitution.
00:20:01Oh, you know,
00:20:02people say they're doing away
00:20:04with the Constitution,
00:20:05and I want to remind you,
00:20:06they will never do away
00:20:08with the Constitution.
00:20:09They'll say that they're
00:20:10upholding the Constitution,
00:20:11but what they do away with
00:20:12is the principles you find
00:20:14in the Constitution.
00:20:15We see in this chapter
00:20:22the three young men
00:20:23went through a terrible
00:20:24time of trouble
00:20:25where their faith
00:20:26was severely tested.
00:20:28The furnace was heated
00:20:29seven times hotter
00:20:30than ever before,
00:20:31you recall.
00:20:32Yet the young men
00:20:33stood with great courage
00:20:34before the king
00:20:35and refused to worship
00:20:37the image
00:20:38to the beast.
00:20:40And like I said before,
00:20:41they preferred to die
00:20:42than to sin
00:20:43against God.
00:20:44They went through the fire
00:20:45but were not consumed, right?
00:20:49Speaking about God's
00:20:51end-time remnant,
00:20:52Ellen White says
00:20:53in The Great Controversy,
00:20:54page 621,
00:20:55she says,
00:20:56quote,
00:20:56Their affliction is great.
00:20:58The flames of the furnace
00:21:00seem about to consume them,
00:21:02but the refiner
00:21:02will bring them forth
00:21:04as gold tried in the fire.
00:21:07God's love for His children
00:21:09during the period
00:21:10of their severest trial
00:21:11is as strong and tender
00:21:13as in the days
00:21:14of their sunniest prosperity,
00:21:16but it is needful
00:21:18for them to be placed
00:21:19in the furnace of fire.
00:21:21Why?
00:21:22She says,
00:21:23Their earthliness
00:21:25must be consumed
00:21:26that the image of Christ
00:21:28may be perfectly
00:21:29reflected.
00:21:33End quote.
00:21:35Got to go through
00:21:35that fire, friends.
00:21:38It's a fire
00:21:38of perfection,
00:21:39glorification,
00:21:42that the image of Christ
00:21:47may be perfectly
00:21:48reflected in us.
00:21:52In both chapters,
00:21:53Jesus Christ
00:21:54is the hero.
00:21:56At the critical moment,
00:21:58Jesus stood up
00:21:58to defend
00:21:59and deliver
00:22:00His faithful remnant
00:22:01from certain death.
00:22:04In Daniel chapter 3,
00:22:06the Aramaic word,
00:22:07deliver,
00:22:08is found four times.
00:22:10Daniel 3,
00:22:10verse 15.
00:22:12Verse 17,
00:22:13it's mentioned two times.
00:22:14Verse 28,
00:22:15it's mentioned.
00:22:17And what's very interesting
00:22:19is that this same word
00:22:20is used five times
00:22:21in chapter 6.
00:22:23Daniel 6,
00:22:2314.
00:22:25Verse 16,
00:22:26verse 20.
00:22:27Twice in verse 27.
00:22:29The equivalent Hebrew word
00:22:31is used also
00:22:32in Daniel 11,
00:22:33verse 41,
00:22:34and Daniel 12,
00:22:35and verse 1
00:22:35to describe
00:22:36to describe
00:22:36the final deliverance
00:22:37of God's people
00:22:38from the king
00:22:38of the north
00:22:39who will go out
00:22:41with great fury
00:22:42to destroy them.
00:22:46These are
00:22:47the only places
00:22:49in the book of Daniel
00:22:51where the word
00:22:52deliver is used.
00:22:53So there has to be
00:22:54a link
00:22:54between chapters 3
00:22:56and chapter 6.
00:22:57And I made that plain
00:22:58as we studied that out.
00:22:59And we find,
00:23:02see,
00:23:03those who are
00:23:03in a personal
00:23:04covenant relationship
00:23:05with the Lord
00:23:06will be delivered.
00:23:08Everyone whose name
00:23:09is written
00:23:09in the book of life.
00:23:12This covenant relationship,
00:23:15like a husband and wife.
00:23:17And so we'll find
00:23:17that as a loving husband,
00:23:19Jesus will protect
00:23:20his covenant wife.
00:23:22Right?
00:23:24As a faithful shepherd,
00:23:26Jesus will protect
00:23:26his covenant sheep.
00:23:27As a sovereign king,
00:23:30Jesus will protect
00:23:31his covenant subjects.
00:23:33As the head,
00:23:34Jesus will protect
00:23:35his covenant body.
00:23:37God will keep
00:23:38his covenant
00:23:38with those
00:23:39who serve him,
00:23:40friends.
00:23:42And so as we study
00:23:43the stories of Daniel
00:23:44chapters 3 and 6,
00:23:46we can know for certain
00:23:47that the issues
00:23:47in the final conflict
00:23:48will not be over
00:23:50what the ministers
00:23:53of today
00:23:54preach over and over.
00:23:55It's not going to be
00:23:55over oil
00:23:56in the Middle East
00:23:58or of the Palestinians
00:24:00against the Jews
00:24:01or the Muslims
00:24:03against the Jews
00:24:04or Islam
00:24:06or any such things.
00:24:08The final conflict
00:24:09will be over worship
00:24:10and the commandments
00:24:11of God
00:24:12versus the commandments
00:24:13of men.
00:24:17And when we study
00:24:18these out,
00:24:18what do we find?
00:24:19We see that
00:24:20literal Israel
00:24:21was literally captive
00:24:22in literal Babylon.
00:24:23The literal king
00:24:26behaved like
00:24:27a literal beast.
00:24:28He set up
00:24:28a literal image
00:24:29in a literal valley,
00:24:31Dura,
00:24:32commanding everyone
00:24:33to literally bow down
00:24:35and worship
00:24:35that literal image.
00:24:38A remnant
00:24:39of literal Jews
00:24:41refused to literally
00:24:42bow down
00:24:43before the literal image
00:24:44and therefore
00:24:44they were thrown
00:24:45into a literal
00:24:46fiery furnace
00:24:48and were delivered
00:24:49from the literal
00:24:50flames by Christ
00:24:51who literally
00:24:52came into
00:24:53the literal furnace.
00:24:57Sounds like
00:24:57a tongue twister.
00:25:01Why am I using
00:25:02the word literal?
00:25:03Because all of this
00:25:04has symbolic value
00:25:06in the book
00:25:06of Revelation
00:25:07and is fulfilled
00:25:08globally
00:25:08and spiritually.
00:25:14The story
00:25:15of Daniel 3
00:25:17foreshadows
00:25:19the final conflict
00:25:20over the fourth
00:25:20commandment.
00:25:21That Sabbath
00:25:22Sunday issue
00:25:23we found out
00:25:24in our studies
00:25:24of Daniel 7
00:25:26as well.
00:25:27Notice this

00:25:36Sabbath
00:25:37has been set up
00:25:38she's speaking
00:25:38about the Sunday
00:25:39an idle Sabbath
00:25:41has been set up
00:25:42as the golden image
00:25:43was set up
00:25:44in the plains
00:25:44of Dura
00:25:45and as Nebuchadnezzar
00:25:47the king of Babylon
00:25:47issued a decree
00:25:49that all who
00:25:50would not bow
00:25:50down and worship
00:25:51this image
00:25:52should be killed
00:25:52so a proclamation
00:25:54will be made
00:25:55that all who
00:25:56will not reverence
00:25:57the Sunday
00:25:58institution
00:25:58will be punished
00:26:00with imprisonment
00:26:01and death
00:26:02end quote
00:26:02that's in the future
00:26:03but the future
00:26:05is closer to us
00:26:06than we realize
00:26:07we go to Daniel 5
00:26:13we find the backdrop
00:26:14to Revelation
00:26:16chapter 16
00:26:17and 17
00:26:17in these chapters
00:26:21the city of Babylon
00:26:22is seated upon
00:26:22the many waters
00:26:23of the river
00:26:24Euphrates
00:26:24Babylon feels secure
00:26:27because she is
00:26:27protected by her river
00:26:29what does waters
00:26:31represent?
00:26:32multitudes
00:26:33nations
00:26:34tongues
00:26:34and peoples
00:26:35the leader of Babylon
00:26:39gives her literal
00:26:40wine to the nations
00:26:41and this does not
00:26:42allow them to
00:26:42distinguish between
00:26:44what is holy
00:26:45and what is common
00:26:47you know
00:26:48we saw
00:26:49a story
00:26:50if you recall
00:26:51the story of Nadab
00:26:52and Abihu
00:26:53that illustrates
00:26:54that truth
00:26:55very well
00:26:56in these
00:27:00chapters
00:27:01the inability
00:27:02to distinguish
00:27:03between the holy
00:27:04and the common
00:27:04leads to false worship
00:27:05and idolatry
00:27:06in these chapters
00:27:08probation closes
00:27:09before the fall
00:27:10of Babylon
00:27:11by a divine decree
00:27:12that decree
00:27:13in Revelation 22
00:27:13verse 11
00:27:14in these chapters
00:27:18the deliverance
00:27:19of God's people
00:27:19comes from the north
00:27:21and the east
00:27:22in these chapters
00:27:25the drying up
00:27:26of the Euphrates
00:27:27leads to the fall
00:27:28of Babylon
00:27:29and in these chapters
00:27:31God's people
00:27:33are delivered
00:27:33from Babylon
00:27:34so that they
00:27:35can return
00:27:35to their lost
00:27:36homeland
00:27:36in Jerusalem
00:27:38what do we see
00:27:42here
00:27:43we see that on
00:27:44literal Babylon's
00:27:46final night
00:27:46the literal king
00:27:47was drinking
00:27:48literal wine
00:27:49and literal cups
00:27:50they took out
00:27:51of God's
00:27:52emblems
00:27:53right
00:27:53sent for them
00:27:56in mockery
00:27:58to the creator
00:27:58God
00:27:59we find that
00:28:01he was worshipping
00:28:02literal idols
00:28:03when a literal
00:28:03hand
00:28:04began to write
00:28:05a literal message
00:28:05on a literal
00:28:06wall
00:28:06in the literal
00:28:07palace
00:28:08which announced
00:28:08the literal
00:28:09fall of
00:28:09literal Babylon
00:28:10Cyrus the deliverer
00:28:15came from the
00:28:16literal east
00:28:17dried up the
00:28:18literal river
00:28:19Euphrates
00:28:19and in this way
00:28:21entered the
00:28:21literal city
00:28:22of Babylon
00:28:22to deliver
00:28:23literal Israel
00:28:23from literal
00:28:24bondage
00:28:25so that they
00:28:25could return
00:28:26and build
00:28:27the literal
00:28:27city of Jerusalem
00:28:28again
00:28:29all of this
00:28:30has symbolic
00:28:31value
00:28:31in the book
00:28:32of Revelation
00:28:32and is fulfilled
00:28:33globally
00:28:34and spiritually
00:28:36then we have
00:28:39Daniel chapter 6
00:28:41it describes
00:28:43what happens
00:28:44when political
00:28:44power
00:28:45forbids the
00:28:46free exercise
00:28:47of religion
00:28:48worship
00:28:49and the law
00:28:50of God
00:28:50all the power
00:28:53seems to be
00:28:53in the hands
00:28:54of the enemies
00:28:54of the remnant
00:28:55an angel
00:28:56shuts the mouths
00:28:57of the lions
00:28:58and Daniel
00:28:59is delivered
00:28:59delivered
00:29:01is again
00:29:02a key word
00:29:03in chapter 6
00:29:04what else
00:29:04we find
00:29:05did we find
00:29:06in Daniel
00:29:06chapter 6
00:29:07Daniel was
00:29:09full of the
00:29:09Holy Spirit
00:29:10wasn't he
00:29:11that's very
00:29:12important
00:29:13Daniel had
00:29:16a profound
00:29:17relationship
00:29:18with God
00:29:18as is revealed
00:29:19in his life
00:29:20of prayer
00:29:21his relationship
00:29:23with God
00:29:23was more important
00:29:24than life
00:29:25itself
00:29:25he'd rather
00:29:26die
00:29:27than sin
00:29:28just like
00:29:28his friends
00:29:30what else
00:29:32Daniel had
00:29:36a passion
00:29:37to comprehend
00:29:38the prophecy
00:29:39of the 2300 days
00:29:40and we shall
00:29:41see this prophecy
00:29:42at the core
00:29:42of Daniel's
00:29:45second book
00:29:45chapters 8
00:29:46through 12
00:29:47Daniel was
00:29:50faithful in
00:29:50the secular
00:29:51affairs of
00:29:52everyday life
00:29:53we need
00:29:55to be
00:29:55faithful
00:29:56in the
00:29:56secular
00:29:57affairs
00:29:57of our
00:29:57everyday
00:29:58life
00:29:58that's how
00:30:01people see
00:30:02Jesus
00:30:02alive in
00:30:03us
00:30:04his enemies
00:30:06could find
00:30:07no fault
00:30:07in his
00:30:08service
00:30:08to the
00:30:08king

00:37:36and I
00:37:37hope that
00:37:37you see

00:37:51Daniel
00:37:51chapter 8

00:37:53and I
00:37:53want to
00:37:53do that
00:37:53again
00:37:54because it's
00:37:55really packed
00:37:55with a
00:37:56tremendous
00:37:56amount of
00:37:57detail
00:37:57that we
00:37:58need to
00:37:59be very
00:37:59familiar
00:38:00with
00:38:01as we
00:38:01go along

00:38:03we want

00:38:14of course
00:38:14get a
00:38:18drink
00:38:18before we
00:38:18start this
00:38:20here we
00:38:28go
00:38:28first one
00:38:29in the
00:38:29third year
00:38:30of the
00:38:30reign
00:38:30of King
00:38:31Belshazzar
00:38:31a vision
00:38:34appeared unto
00:38:35me
00:38:35even unto
00:38:35me
00:38:36Daniel
00:38:36after that
00:38:37which appeared
00:38:37unto me
00:38:38at the
00:38:38first
00:38:38and I
00:38:39saw in
00:38:40a vision
00:38:40and it
00:38:41came to
00:38:41pass
00:38:42when I
00:38:42saw
00:38:43that I
00:38:44was at
00:38:44Shushan
00:38:45in the
00:38:45palace
00:38:46which is
00:38:46in the
00:38:46province
00:38:46of Elam
00:38:47and I
00:38:48saw
00:38:48in a
00:38:49vision
00:38:49and I
00:38:50was by
00:38:50the river
00:38:50you lay
00:38:51then I
00:38:52lifted up
00:38:52mine eyes
00:38:53and saw
00:38:53and behold
00:38:54there stood
00:38:54before the
00:38:55river
00:38:55a ram
00:38:56which had
00:38:56two horns
00:38:57and the
00:38:58two horns
00:38:58were high
00:38:59but one
00:39:01was higher
00:39:02than the
00:39:02other
00:39:02and the
00:39:02higher
00:39:03came up
00:39:03last
00:39:04verse 4
00:39:05I saw
00:39:05the ram
00:39:06pushing
00:39:06westward
00:39:07and northward
00:39:07and southward
00:39:08so that no
00:39:09beasts might
00:39:10stand before
00:39:11him
00:39:11neither was
00:39:12there any
00:39:12that could
00:39:13deliver out
00:39:13of his
00:39:13hand
00:39:14but he
00:39:14did
00:39:15according
00:39:15to his
00:39:15will
00:39:15and became
00:39:16great
00:39:17verse 5
00:39:18and I
00:39:19and as I
00:39:20was considering
00:39:21behold
00:39:21a he-goat
00:39:22came from
00:39:23the west
00:39:23on the face
00:39:24of the whole
00:39:24earth
00:39:25and touched
00:39:25not the
00:39:25ground
00:39:26and the
00:39:26goat
00:39:27had a
00:39:27notable
00:39:27horn
00:39:28between
00:39:28his
00:39:28eyes
00:39:29and he
00:39:30came
00:39:30to the
00:39:30ram
00:39:30that had
00:39:31two
00:39:31horns
00:39:31which
00:39:31I
00:39:32had
00:39:32seen
00:39:32standing
00:39:33before
00:39:33the
00:39:33river
00:39:34and ran
00:39:34unto
00:39:35him
00:39:35in the
00:39:35fury
00:39:36of his
00:39:36power
00:39:37and I
00:39:38saw
00:39:38him
00:39:39come
00:39:39close
00:39:40unto
00:39:40the
00:39:40ram
00:39:40and he
00:39:41was moved
00:39:41with collar
00:39:42against him
00:39:43and smote
00:39:44the ram
00:39:44and break
00:39:45his two
00:39:45horns
00:39:46and there
00:39:46was no
00:39:47power in
00:39:47the ram
00:39:48to stand
00:39:48before him
00:39:49but he
00:39:49cast him
00:39:50down to
00:39:50the ground
00:39:51and stamped
00:39:52upon him
00:39:53and there
00:39:54was none
00:39:54that could
00:39:55deliver the
00:39:55ram
00:39:55out of his
00:39:56hand
00:39:56therefore
00:39:58the
00:40:00he-goat
00:40:01waxed

00:46:13in episode
00:46:141
00:46:14the first
00:46:16difference between
00:46:17Daniel 7
00:46:18and Daniel
00:46:19chapter 8
00:46:20a lion is
00:46:24used in
00:46:25Daniel 7
00:46:26to represent
00:46:27Babylon
00:46:27right
00:46:28but in
00:46:28Daniel 8
00:46:29there's no
00:46:29symbol for
00:46:30Babylon
00:46:30why is this
00:46:32now some
00:46:34suggest that the
00:46:34existence of
00:46:35Babylon is
00:46:36assumed because
00:46:37the vision is
00:46:38dated to the
00:46:39reign of
00:46:39Belshazzar
00:46:40who was a
00:46:41Babylonian
00:46:42king
00:46:43another idea
00:46:45is that
00:46:45Babylon is
00:46:46about to
00:46:46disappear from
00:46:47the prophetic
00:46:47scenario
00:46:48notice what

00:46:50Bunch says
00:46:51in his
00:46:52book
00:46:52the book
00:46:53of Daniel
00:46:54on page
00:46:55110
00:46:56Bunch says
00:46:58quote
00:46:58since Babylon
00:46:59was so
00:47:00soon to
00:47:01fall
00:47:01it is
00:47:02naturally
00:47:03left out
00:47:03of this
00:47:04symbolic
00:47:04prophecy
00:47:05the symbols

00:47:07with
00:47:08Medo
00:47:08Persia
00:47:09but
00:47:11Babylon
00:47:12did not
00:47:13fall
00:47:13until 11
00:47:14or 12
00:47:14years
00:47:14after this
00:47:15vision
00:47:15was given
00:47:16so that
00:47:17doesn't
00:47:19really make
00:47:19sense
00:47:20the best
00:47:22reason for
00:47:23the exclusion
00:47:23of a symbol
00:47:24for Babylon
00:47:25is that the
00:47:25prophecy

00:47:39kingdom
00:47:39that is
00:47:40the
00:47:41best
00:47:42reason
00:47:43that is
00:47:44the best
00:47:45reason
00:47:45because it
00:47:46eats up
00:47:46most all
00:47:47the chapter
00:47:47and you
00:47:47get into
00:47:48chapter 9
00:47:48too
00:47:49it's all
00:47:50about the
00:47:502300 days
00:47:51and what's
00:47:54going on
00:47:54in heaven
00:47:55and what
00:47:56this
00:47:56desolator
00:47:57is trying
00:47:58to do
00:47:58about that
00:47:59the second
00:48:01difference
00:48:01between
00:48:03Daniels
00:48:04chapter 7
00:48:04and 8
00:48:05is that
00:48:05Daniel 7
00:48:06has four
00:48:06beasts
00:48:07and each
00:48:08of them
00:48:08is wild
00:48:09and carnivorous
00:48:10but Daniel 8
00:48:11it has only
00:48:12two beasts
00:48:13and each
00:48:13of them
00:48:14is domestic
00:48:14in fact
00:48:16the ram
00:48:17was used
00:48:18in the
00:48:18daily
00:48:18service
00:48:19of the
00:48:19sanctuary
00:48:19and the
00:48:20he-goat
00:48:21was used
00:48:21in the
00:48:22yearly
00:48:22service
00:48:22in the
00:48:23sanctuary
00:48:23and I
00:48:25think this
00:48:25clearly shows
00:48:26that the
00:48:26central
00:48:27emphasis
00:48:27of Daniel 8
00:48:28is Christ's
00:48:28ministry
00:48:29in the
00:48:30sanctuary
00:48:30and we'll
00:48:32discover in
00:48:33our study
00:48:33that the
00:48:34little horn
00:48:34takes away
00:48:35the daily
00:48:36represented by
00:48:37the ram
00:48:38and for this
00:48:39God will
00:48:39judge it
00:48:40in the
00:48:40yearly service
00:48:41represented by
00:48:42the he-goat
00:48:42on the
00:48:43day of
00:48:43atonement
00:48:43which is
00:48:44the day
00:48:45of judgment
00:48:46we'll find
00:48:48that out
00:48:49third
00:48:51difference
00:48:51between
00:48:52Daniel 7
00:48:53and 8
00:48:53in Daniel 7
00:48:54there are
00:48:55two separate
00:48:55symbols for
00:48:56pagan
00:48:56and papal
00:48:57Rome
00:48:58we saw
00:48:59that very
00:48:59clearly
00:49:00pagan
00:49:01Rome
00:49:01is represented
00:49:02by a
00:49:03dragon
00:49:03and papal
00:49:04Rome
00:49:04is represented
00:49:05by a
00:49:05little horn
00:49:06which comes
00:49:06up from
00:49:07the head
00:49:07of the
00:49:07dragon
00:49:08beast
00:49:08right
00:49:08but in
00:49:09Daniel 8
00:49:10both
00:49:10pagan
00:49:11and papal
00:49:11Rome
00:49:12are represented
00:49:13by the
00:49:13little horn
00:49:14we'll get
00:49:15into that
00:49:15in a little
00:49:16bit of
00:49:16detail
00:49:16because
00:49:17it's being
00:49:19taught
00:49:19and has
00:49:20been taught
00:49:20for years
00:49:21and years
00:49:21and years
00:49:22but that
00:49:22this is a
00:49:23separate
00:49:23power
00:49:24which makes
00:49:25absolutely
00:49:26no sense
00:49:27whatsoever
00:49:27now
00:49:30the question
00:49:33is
00:49:33why
00:49:35does
00:49:35Daniel 8
00:49:37represent
00:49:38the two
00:49:40Romans
00:49:40with only
00:49:40one symbol
00:49:41well
00:49:43one reason
00:49:44is that
00:49:44the Holy
00:49:45Spirit
00:49:45through Daniel
00:49:46wants us
00:49:47to think
00:49:47in terms
00:49:48of the
00:49:48daily
00:49:49and yearly
00:49:49services
00:49:50of the
00:49:50sanctuary
00:49:51if another
00:49:52beast
00:49:52had been
00:49:53introduced
00:49:53this
00:49:54sanctuary
00:49:55symbolism
00:49:55would have
00:49:56been
00:49:56significantly
00:49:58obscured
00:49:59another
00:50:01issue
00:50:01that we
00:50:03will address
00:50:03later in
00:50:04this study
00:50:04is the
00:50:05reason why
00:50:05the little
00:50:06horn of
00:50:06Daniel 7
00:50:07arises from
00:50:07pagan Rome
00:50:08while the
00:50:09little horn of
00:50:09Daniel 8
00:50:10arises from
00:50:10one of the
00:50:11four
00:50:11Hellenistic
00:50:12kingdoms
00:50:13we're going to
00:50:14go through
00:50:14some history
00:50:15of the
00:50:16Hellenistic
00:50:17period
00:50:17probably next
00:50:19study we
00:50:20get together
00:50:20because we
00:50:22need to
00:50:22understand some
00:50:23history when
00:50:24you study
00:50:24prophecy
00:50:25friends
00:50:25I know
00:50:26there are
00:50:26people that
00:50:27hate history
00:50:27but you've
00:50:29got to be
00:50:29somewhat of a
00:50:30history student
00:50:30if you're going
00:50:31to understand
00:50:32Bible prophecy
00:50:33as fully as
00:50:35you can
00:50:36understand it
00:50:36this apparent
00:50:39discrepancy
00:50:40though between
00:50:40Daniel 7 and
00:50:42Daniel 8 has
00:50:43led futurists
00:50:44and
00:50:44preterist
00:50:45scholars to
00:50:46errantly conclude
00:50:46that the
00:50:47little horn of
00:50:48Daniel 8 does
00:50:48not represent the
00:50:49same power as
00:50:51the little horn of
00:50:51Daniel 7 which
00:50:52I mentioned
00:50:52previously
00:50:53preterists believe
00:50:56the little horn
00:50:56Daniel 7
00:50:57Daniel 8 is a
00:50:58symbol of
00:50:58anarchist
00:50:59epiphanies
00:51:00and I'll show
00:51:01that this is
00:51:01false very
00:51:02clearly
00:51:02futurist
00:51:04scholars believe
00:51:04that the little
00:51:05horn of
00:51:05Daniel 7
00:51:06represents a
00:51:06future
00:51:07individual
00:51:08antichrist
00:51:09who'll sit
00:51:09in a rebuilt
00:51:10Jerusalem temple
00:51:12for three and
00:51:13a half literal
00:51:14years
00:51:14and I'll
00:51:16expose that as
00:51:17false as well
00:51:18very easily to
00:51:19do if you use
00:51:20bible principles
00:51:21of study
00:51:24the fourth
00:51:26difference
00:51:27between
00:51:27Daniel 7
00:51:29and Daniel 8
00:51:30the vision of
00:51:32Daniel 7
00:51:32concludes with
00:51:33the setting up
00:51:34of Christ's
00:51:34everlasting kingdom
00:51:35but in Daniel 8
00:51:37there is no
00:51:37mention of the
00:51:38everlasting kingdom
00:51:39and so the
00:51:40vision of Daniel 8
00:51:41as compared with
00:51:42Daniel 7 is
00:51:43incomplete
00:51:43it's like the
00:51:46story has been
00:51:46stopped halfway
00:51:47through doesn't
00:51:48it and why
00:51:49is this
00:51:50remember the
00:51:52Daniel chapters
00:51:538 through 12
00:51:54is a book in
00:51:55itself and the
00:51:57central theme of
00:51:57the book is the
00:51:582300 days and
00:52:00years and so we
00:52:02must wait until
00:52:03the conclusion of
00:52:04the book for the
00:52:05setting up of the
00:52:06everlasting kingdom
00:52:07which you find in
00:52:08Daniel 12
00:52:09that is to say
00:52:11Daniel 8 and
00:52:14verse 14 provides
00:52:15us with a description
00:52:16of the beginning of
00:52:17the judgment and
00:52:18Daniel chapter 12
00:52:19verses 1 through 3
00:52:21presents the
00:52:21conclusion of the
00:52:22same judgment and
00:52:24the setting up of
00:52:25the everlasting
00:52:25kingdom and in
00:52:27between these two
00:52:29points of time we
00:52:30find the date for
00:52:31the beginning of the
00:52:312300 days or years
00:52:33that's in Daniel
00:52:34chapter 9 and we
00:52:36see the struggle
00:52:37between Christ and
00:52:38Satan for the
00:52:39decrees to restore
00:52:41and rebuild Jerusalem
00:52:42given that's Daniel
00:52:43chapter 10 and an
00:52:45amplified outline of
00:52:46events from the
00:52:47kingdom of Persia to
00:52:48the end of the
00:52:49judgment and the
00:52:50setting up of Christ's
00:52:51everlasting kingdom
00:52:53we go from verse 1 of
00:52:55chapter 11 all the way
00:52:56to Daniel 12 verse 3
00:52:58and so now that I've
00:53:01laid that out friends
00:53:02let's get into Daniel
00:53:05chapter 8 I don't know
00:53:09friends I'm excited are you
00:53:10excited know what it
00:53:12means it is a blessing
00:53:18for God to open up his
00:53:20truth is it not it's
00:53:22wonderful okay Daniel 8
00:53:25and verse 1 let's read
00:53:27it in the third year of
00:53:30the reign of King
00:53:31Belshazzar a vision
00:53:33appeared unto me even
00:53:34unto me Daniel he says
00:53:37after that which appeared
00:53:40unto me at the first
00:53:42well we find that Daniel
00:53:468 is dated to the third
00:53:48year of the reign of King
00:53:49Belshazzar the first year
00:53:51of Belshazzar's kingship was
00:53:53550 549 550 BC and this
00:53:57third year then would be
00:53:59548 547 BC which means as I
00:54:02mentioned before 11 or 12
00:54:04years were still to pass
00:54:05before the ball the the fall
00:54:06of Babylon now two years
00:54:10have elapsed since Daniel's
00:54:12previous vision you know
00:54:15something it's interesting to
00:54:16note that the visions of
00:54:18chapters 7 and 8 come
00:54:20together as one pair grouped
00:54:22two years apart but the
00:54:25prophecies in chapters 9
00:54:26through 12 they form a unit as
00:54:28well a second pair which was a
00:54:31decade later but also grouped
00:54:34two years apart isn't that
00:54:37something that's kind of
00:54:39interesting it's almost like
00:54:41Daniel has to regroup
00:54:43right okay it's like the Lord
00:54:47says we'll give him a couple
00:54:49years he'll be ready for the
00:54:53next round I just find that
00:54:56interesting I don't know maybe
00:54:57you maybe you don't but I do
00:54:59Daniel was now basically he was
00:55:03an old man he'd been in
00:55:05captivity for you know a total
00:55:06of about 50 or 60 years and as
00:55:09he was probably around 16 I
00:55:11think when he when he was brought
00:55:14to Babylon he'd now be well over
00:55:1570 he might be in his 80s you
00:55:18know the fact that the vision is
00:55:20given even unto me did you catch
00:55:23that he says even unto me Daniel
00:55:24what's he mean by that it means
00:55:27that Daniel is the intended
00:55:29recipient and interpreter of this
00:55:32prophetic message it was given to
00:55:35me even unto me Daniel he's
00:55:38emphasizing it wasn't given to
00:55:40anybody else it was given to me I'm
00:55:43the the intended recipient and
00:55:45interpreter of it Daniel says we
00:55:51read there that the vision appeared
00:55:52after that which appeared unto me at
00:55:54the first right the Hebrew word for
00:55:58after can have the meaning not only
00:56:01of being afterwards in time but
00:56:04following after in terms of copying
00:56:06after or like walking after some
00:56:09person or or something so the vision
00:56:14of chapter 8 would follow after or be
00:56:16parallel to that of chapter 7 and in
00:56:20fact all four of the visions in the
00:56:22book of Daniel chapters 2 and 7 8 9 10
00:56:27through 12 they follow after or are
00:56:29parallel to each other that doesn't
00:56:33mean that they're chronologically per
00:56:36se in order it just means that they
00:56:38are parallel with each other we'll talk
00:56:40about chronology later on Daniel 8 and
00:56:46verse 2 and I saw in a vision and it
00:56:51came to pass when I saw that I was at
00:56:54Shushan in the palace which is in the
00:56:58province of Elam and I saw in a vision
00:57:00and I was by the river you lay
00:57:02Daniel's vision about the four beasts
00:57:10in chapter 7 came to him while he was
00:57:12in bed remember that he was in bed and
00:57:16he had had this dream but this vision
00:57:18occurred while he was awake in the
00:57:21lily palace Shushan or Susa means
00:57:25lily and it was called the lily palace
00:57:27and the phrase actually may be
00:57:29translated when you read that in the
00:57:31citadel of Shushan or as the revised
00:57:34standard version translates it Susa the
00:57:37capital Susa was the winter residence
00:57:40of the Persian kings it was located on the
00:57:43river you lie which was very near the
00:57:46Persian Gulf actually notice what
00:57:49Haskell says in his book story of Daniel
00:57:52the prophet pages 104-105 Haskell says
00:57:56quote Shushan was the capital of Elam which
00:57:59was formerly a subject province of the
00:58:02kingdom of Babylon but as that empire
00:58:05began to weaken and the strength of
00:58:08Cyrus the Persian general was recognized
00:58:11Elam under Apredates the vice royal
00:58:14prince would revolt from Babylon and
00:58:17join the forces of the Persians years
00:58:21before this the prophet Isaiah had said
00:58:23that Elam and media would join forces in
00:58:26the conquest of Babylon so he said as
00:58:33Daniel lived in the palace of Shushan he
00:58:36saw the way opening for the fulfillment
00:58:38of this prophecy interesting words there
00:58:43by Haskell so we find that Elam was used
00:58:47to be a province you know they paid
00:58:49tribute stuff to Babylon they saw that
00:58:51you know Babylon was getting weak and
00:58:53who was coming to power they recognized
00:58:56Cyrus they left Babylon they joined they
00:59:00joined the Medes and Persians quote here
00:59:04Taylor Bunch again his book the book of
00:59:07Daniel page 110 notice what he says
00:59:11historically speaking quote Elam was a
00:59:14province east of Babylonia
00:59:16east of Babylonia at the head of the
00:59:22Persian Gulf Shushan also called Susa was
00:59:24the capital city of the province and was
00:59:27destined to become the royal seat of the
00:59:29Medo-Persian Empire so that tells us
00:59:35something about where Daniel was when he
00:59:38had this vision he was in the lily palace
00:59:41and we get a better understanding where
00:59:45he was what kind was going on but what
00:59:48do we see here again in verse 2 we see in
00:59:53in here a tremendous emphasis on seeing Daniel
00:59:58says I saw three times in this verse this
01:00:04emphasis is underlying time and again in
01:00:06verses 1 through 13 and keep in mind what
01:00:09I mentioned before the Hebrew word for
01:00:11vision is Kasan and we'll come back to it
01:00:14again but it's also important to recognize
01:00:22that Daniel is in Persia when he sees
01:00:24this vision in other words the vision
01:00:27begins during the kingdom of Persia even
01:00:29though it is dated to the rule of
01:00:32Belshazzar let's go to verse 3 Daniel 8
01:00:36excuse me and verse 3
01:00:38then I lifted up mine eyes and saw and
01:00:48behold there stood before the river a
01:00:50ram which had two horns and the two
01:00:52horns were high but one was higher than
01:00:55the other and the higher came up last
01:00:57notice once again the emphasis on sight
01:01:02eyes saw behold Daniel sees a ram next
01:01:07to the river why a ram well what is a
01:01:11ram a ram is a male sheep did you know
01:01:17that the the Persians considered a ram that
01:01:21had sharp pointed horns to be their
01:01:22guardian spirit and the king bore the
01:01:26head of a ram instead of a crown when he
01:01:28led his armies into battle the symbols of
01:01:32Medo-Persia used in Daniel the ram and
01:01:36the bear as far as that goes they're
01:01:38powerful creatures symbolizing strength
01:01:40and dominance we're told that the ram has
01:01:45two horns but one's higher than the other
01:01:47and the highest one comes up last horns
01:01:50especially those of animals like bulls or
01:01:52rams they're natural weapons they're also
01:01:56symbols of strength and power and we've
01:02:00learned that in Bible prophecy a horn and a
01:02:03horn is a symbol of what it's a symbol for
01:02:06a kingdom but the meaning of the ram symbol
01:02:12is interpreted in verse 20 Gabriel says
01:02:15quote the ram which thou sawest having
01:02:17two horns are the kings of media and
01:02:21Persia significantly after Darius the
01:02:28Mede who died in 536 BC all the remaining
01:02:32rulers of the kingdom were Persian Cyrus who
01:02:36was half median and half Persian he died in
01:02:40530 BC like six six seven years after
01:02:44Darius and Cambyses who was also half
01:02:49median and half Persian he died in 522 BC they
01:02:55came after Darius and so the tallest horn
01:02:58Persia did come up last Persia became the
01:03:02dominant power when Cyrus defeated
01:03:05Astyages of media in 550 BC the Medes
01:03:10however in case you think they were you
01:03:12know they warred against each other they
01:03:14didn't they weren't treated as inferiors or
01:03:17as subjugated people they they were allies
01:03:20all during the rain now Daniel 5 we're told
01:03:26that Babylon fell into the hands of the
01:03:28Medes and Persians in Daniel 8 we're
01:03:30informed that the two horns are the kings
01:03:32of media and Persia but interestingly in
01:03:36Daniel 10 and 11 this kingdom is uniformly
01:03:42referred to only as Persia so it was the
01:03:46dominant partner we see this throughout
01:03:50through history documented history go
01:03:53back to Haskell's book story of Daniel
01:03:55the prophet page 105 notice he says
01:03:57quote in his previous vision the second
01:04:00kingdom had been represented by a bear
01:04:03which raised itself on one side and had
01:04:06three ribs in its mouth both symbols
01:04:09applied to the double nature of the
01:04:11kingdom of the Medes and Persians but
01:04:13the uneven horns of the ram give a more
01:04:16specific description for while the
01:04:19Median kingdom was the older of the two
01:04:21the Persian excelled it in strength and
01:04:25its position in history must be
01:04:26attributed to the line of Persian kings
01:04:28which began with Cyrus the Great end
01:04:31quote and let's see what Bunch says
01:04:37Bunch says book Daniel page 111 he says
01:04:41quote media was an independent kingdom
01:04:43long before Persia was anything but a
01:04:46subject province after Cyrus Persia became
01:04:50the dominant power and attain the greater
01:04:53eminence end quote and so history
01:04:58document history shows that the dominant
01:05:01power came up last just as God's vision
01:05:05dictates here and has said to you know
01:05:08um to Daniel he's seeing it let's go to
01:05:13verse 4 Daniel 8 verse 4 I'll wrap it up
01:05:16here I think maybe he says quote I saw the
01:05:21ram pushing westward and northward and
01:05:24southward so that no beasts might stand
01:05:27before him what's a beast represent
01:05:29right neither was there any that could
01:05:34deliver out of his hand but he did
01:05:35according to his will and became great it
01:05:39says so he sees the ram pushing there is a
01:05:44remarkable parallel between the bear of
01:05:48Daniel 7 and this ram in Daniel 7 the
01:05:54bear is raised up on one side you recall
01:05:56Daniel 8 one of the horns is higher than
01:05:59the other in Daniel 7 the bear has three
01:06:02ribs in its mouth in Daniel 8 the ram conquers
01:06:06in three points of the compass westward
01:06:09Babylon in 539 BC northward Lydia 546 BC and
01:06:15southward Egypt 525 BC Cyrus conquered Lydia
01:06:22and Babylon Cambysus extended the conquest
01:06:25south into Egypt and Nubia in 525 BC
01:06:29Darius Hestepes or it should be Hestepes
01:06:35mispronounce that Hestepes he went north
01:06:38against the Scythians in 513 BC the
01:06:42Medo-Persian Empire covered much more
01:06:44territory than its predecessor Babylon did
01:06:47so successful were the Persian armies that
01:06:51in the days of Ahasuerus there in Esther
01:06:54the empire extended from India to Ethiopia
01:06:58the eastern and southern extremities of the
01:07:01then known world friends it's interesting
01:07:05that a frequent title of the Persian monarch
01:07:06was king of kings or king of the countries
01:07:09king of the countries let me share this with
01:07:15you it's from Goldstein's book 1844 made
01:07:19simple page 33 he says notice the parallels
01:07:24between the media Persian bear Daniel 7 and
01:07:27the media Persian ram Dan of chapter 8 both
01:07:31beasts were asymmetric asymmetrical asymmetrical I
01:07:36always had a tough time with that word the bear was
01:07:40raised up on one side correspondingly the
01:07:43ram's horns were not equal in size one
01:07:45being higher than the other also the bear had
01:07:48three ribs in its mouth believed to be
01:07:50Babylon Egypt and Lydia three nations
01:07:53crushed by media Persia the ram and
01:07:57Daniel 8 conquers in three directions
01:07:59westward Babylon southward Egypt northward
01:08:01Lydia end quote and then in Haskell's book
01:08:07again the story of Daniel the prophet pages
01:08:09105 106 he says quote as the ram pushed
01:08:13westward northward and southward and no
01:08:16beast could stand before it so the Medo-Persian
01:08:19empire extended its dominion in these
01:08:22directions at the fall of Babylon 120
01:08:26provinces recognized the authority of
01:08:28Cyrus and Darius these were held in
01:08:33subjection and others added so that in the
01:08:35time of the hazardous of Esther the kingdom
01:08:39controlled 127 provinces and extended from
01:08:44India on the east to the Mediterranean on the
01:08:47west and from the Caspian Sea to Ethiopia
01:08:50it was then called a glorious kingdom and the
01:08:53monarch were spoken of as quote his
01:08:56excellent majesty end quote well in verse
01:09:04four Daniel says no beasts might stand before him the ram is portrayed as powerful and
01:09:15aggressive and pushing any who stood against him this standing implies a resistant position
01:09:22something the ram overcomes with its force and when this was written Babylon was still
01:09:28dominant but the Medo-Persians were rising and Daniel saw that eventually not even Babylon could stand
01:09:35against them
01:09:37Smith in his book Daniel in the Revelation page 165 he says quote no earthly powers could stand before them as they
01:09:46marched toward the exalted position to which the providence of God had summoned them
01:09:51God had even named him
01:09:55Cyrus
01:09:57predicted him
01:09:59it's one of the things
01:10:00that was explained to Cyrus and shown to Cyrus specifically in God's word
01:10:05he was amazed by that
01:10:08and it's worthy of notice that the ram became
01:10:12great
01:10:13literally that means he did great things
01:10:16he made himself big or he magnified
01:10:18himself
01:10:21Thiel writes in his outline studies in Daniel page 82
01:10:25he says Cyrus in his conquest swept everything before him with seemingly irresistible force
01:10:33end quote
01:10:35pushed out of the way
01:10:38he made himself big
01:10:41magnified himself
01:10:42and we'll soon see a power
01:10:44which became very great
01:10:46and still another which became exceedingly great
01:10:49it's also important to realize that the ram conquers only horizontally
01:10:54in other words it fights against other beasts kingdoms on on earth
01:10:59but does not fight vertically against the God of heaven
01:11:02we'll soon see a power in this prophecy which actually fights against God
01:11:07on a vertical level
01:11:10and
01:11:12we'll see that next time
01:11:15we get together
01:11:16let's bow our heads now and have a word of prayer
01:11:19Father in heaven we thank you so very much
01:11:21for being with us
01:11:23so far in this study of Daniel 8
01:11:25there's so many things to unpack
01:11:27so many things being brought forth
01:11:29I pray that you'd be with each and every one of us
01:11:31as we study this
01:11:32and we go back over it
01:11:33so we become more and more familiar with it
01:11:36and the history
01:11:37about it
01:11:38you're laying things open for us
01:11:39so we
01:11:39can understand this great controversy
01:11:42better
01:11:43between good and evil
01:11:44between Christ
01:11:45and the kingdom of God
01:11:47and Satan
01:11:48and his fallen
01:11:49demon angels
01:11:50Father I pray you'd be with each and every one of us
01:11:53give us of the Holy Spirit
01:11:54that we may come to know the truth
01:11:57and much more than that
01:11:59that we will have a love for it
01:12:01and a love for each other
01:12:03that same love that you have for us
01:12:06may we extend it to all
01:12:07thank you Lord for protecting your word
01:12:11to the time of the end
01:12:13for those of us who live in this time
01:12:15and keep us safe I pray
01:12:17and faithful
01:12:19so we may see Jesus come in the clouds
01:12:22and be with him forever

01:12:34go back over
01:12:36reread Daniel chapter 8
01:12:37again and again
01:12:38and let some of these things
01:12:40that are being brought out
01:12:41captivate your mind
01:12:44and praise the Lord
01:12:47for the truth that he's sharing
01:12:48and never doubt
01:12:50the love of God for you
01:12:51I say it over and over
01:12:52but it's because I mean it
01:12:54don't ever doubt
01:12:55God's love for you
01:12:56when you begin to doubt
01:12:58your eyes are being
01:12:59taken away
01:13:00Satan's diverting him
01:13:01go right back to Jesus
01:13:03go back to the cross
01:13:04never doubt that love
01:13:06for Jesus
01:13:07and the love he has for you
01:13:08and he'll see us through
01:13:12he's faithful who promised
01:13:14and I hope you can join us
