00:00:00Hello friends, I'm Pastor Joe Laswell. I welcome you to our study at this time. Oh, it's going
00:00:19to be good. Isn't it always? Isn't it always good? I pray that it is. We're getting started
00:00:24into Daniel chapter 9. Daniel chapter 9. In this series of studies, I have entitled The
00:00:34Annihilator. The Annihilator. We'll get more into that in just a moment, but it's going
00:00:40to be a very, very interesting, I think. We'll get into a timeline as well later on in this
00:00:48chapter. But what we're going to find is that Gabriel has come back to Daniel in answer
00:00:54to prayer to continue explaining to him about Daniel 8 and verse 14, the 2300 years. And
00:01:02so we'll get to dig into Daniel 9 and find out more about this annihilator and the timeline
00:01:11involved with that. And in fact, it goes on into chapters 10, 11, and 12 until the end
00:01:17of the book. But I'm excited to be with you and to get into this study into God's Word.
00:01:22I pray that you've been learning as we've been going through these things. And so you know
00:01:27that before we get into God's Word, we want to have a word of prayer together. Ask the
00:01:31Lord to bless us. So I invite you to kneel if you possibly can. And if you can't, that's
00:01:38fine. Prayer is not posture necessarily. But at least let us bow our hearts and our heads
00:01:45together as we come before the Lord in reverent awe. Father in heaven, we thank you so much
00:01:51for this chance that we have, this opportunity we have to come together and open your Holy
00:01:57Word that you have protected through the ages, especially, I believe, for those of us who
00:02:05live here at the time of the end. I pray that you will bless us on this Holy Sabbath day
00:02:12as you have promised, not because we're worthy in any way, Father, because Jesus is. But
00:02:18you will send us the Holy Spirit to help give us discernment and wisdom as we go through
00:02:22your Word. And as we look at documented history, and we look at concordances and all these different
00:02:29things to help us to have a right understanding, we pray for that. So that we may be clear as
00:02:35to the truth and be able to share it with others. Father, we pray for the Holy Spirit to be with us in
00:02:40power. Help us to have and develop a greater love for Thee and for each other. And I pray and pray for
00:02:50all those who can hear me and for the church and those worshiping on this Holy Day and all who seek
00:02:56Thy face that You will forgive us our sins. We claim the blood that Jesus shed there at Calvary.
00:03:01And we pray that You will give us and impart to us the strength to be overcomers, to put these sins
00:03:10away so that we may be found faithful when Jesus returns, that we will have our names remain in the
00:03:18Lamb's Book of Life. Father, You know those on our prayer lists. We pray that You be very, very near to
00:03:23each and every one of them. Some are so very close to us, Father. We pray deeply that You will work
00:03:31out miracles in their lives. Of course, the greatest miracle would be that they give their life to
00:03:37Thee. We pray for that above all things. And Father, I pray that You give me the words to speak
00:03:43here at this time. May they be always the truth, not opinion. Always the truth and bring glory to Thee.
00:03:52I ask these favors in the name of Jesus, who is so worthy. Amen and amen.
00:03:58Well, friends, we are, like I said, we are beginning Daniel chapter 9, and this is a series of studies
00:04:10I have named, The Annihilator. This is episode 1. I don't know how many episodes we're going to have
00:04:17in this one. In chapter 8, we had, what did we have? We had 12, and I think chapter 7, we had like 25.
00:04:24Might have been more. I can't recall. I can't recall. But I was looking for a particular note
00:04:33while I was studying and making preparations for chapter 9, and I noticed that we started this
00:04:38time of the end series over six years ago. Can you believe it? Now, that's a bit misleading,
00:04:46isn't it, as we get together just a couple of times a month. So, it hasn't been like a full six years,
00:04:51right? Like every single day. But the amount of truth we've learned during that time, I believe,
00:04:56is incredible. And it's necessary. I believe this wholeheartedly. It's necessary for the world to
00:05:03learn these things. But if you can recall, when we started this series way back in 2019,
00:05:09I laid down three main study rules that, in this time of the end series, I think have proven to be
00:05:16fair and balanced. Now, I'm going to ask, do you remember these rules? You may not remember the
00:05:21rules. But I think that sticking to these rules will keep us in a spirit of unity as we go along,
00:05:31and I believe that they really have. You see, friends, the last thing the devil wants is for
00:05:36you to understand the Bible, especially in time events, because that unmasks his deceptions, you
00:05:44see. He wants to keep you in ignorance as to God's loving character and power to change your life from
00:05:50a lost soul into a citizen of his kingdom. The devil wants you to die in that ignorance so you will
00:05:58lose eternal life. And so, we have been shutting the door, I think, to the devil and his divisiveness,
00:06:06as we've gone through our studies in the book of Daniel, and actually will continue to do so
00:06:11throughout our studies of Bible prophecy. Now, back when we began this series, I stated these
00:06:21three main study rules. I'm going to remind you of them, just to get a refreshment in your mind.
00:06:26The first rule was that we will use the entire King James Version Bible. In fact, we've also used
00:06:32other translations for comparison. We've used both the Old and New Testaments. You have to use the
00:06:37whole of God's Word. And we will also refer to strong concordance, Bible commentaries, Bible
00:06:43dictionaries, reference books, miscellaneous history books, etc., as needed. Second rule was we will go by
00:06:52the weight of evidence that's found in God's Word to reach a conclusion. Doctrinal differences are not
00:06:58decided democratically, friends, like the majority rules. No, no, no. But only by the weight of evidence
00:07:05found in Scripture. And so, the Bible tells us it is impossible for God to lie. So, all of His Word
00:07:11is truth. And this means that true doctrines will be in harmony with every word that proceedeth out of
00:07:20the mouth of the mouth of God, as well as all that the prophets have spoken. And the third rule was
00:07:28personal opinions do not constitute divine truth. Let me tell you, this is a hard one for the vast
00:07:35majority of Christians, in my experience as a minister of the gospel. Personal opinions always seem to sneak
00:07:44their way in. And so, this was the third rule. I started with these rules at the very beginning of this
00:07:53entire time of the end series. Personal opinions do not constitute divine truth, no matter how strongly held
00:07:59or emotionally supported. And it all seems to get to emotions, for the most part. 2 Peter 1, verse 20, tells us
00:08:09that knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private
00:08:14interpretation. And so, we will go by the weight of biblical evidence, based upon a thus
00:08:22saith the Lord. And speaking of that, let me share a couple of quotes with you
00:08:27from the prophet. This is from Reflecting Christ, page 113.
00:08:34Quote, we are never safe while we are guided by human opinions. But we are safe when we are guided
00:08:45by a thus saith the Lord. We cannot trust the salvation of our souls to any lower standard than
00:08:52the decision of an infallible judge. Those who make God their guide and his word their counselor
00:08:59follow the lamp of life. God's living oracles guide their feet in straight paths. Amen and amen.
00:09:08Can we say amen to that? Here's another one. It's from the book Acts of the Apostles, page 68.
00:09:15Quote, we are to recognize human government as an ordinance of divine appointment. That's true.
00:09:21Romans 13. And teach obedience to it as a sacred duty within its legitimate sphere.
00:09:28Remember, what's the little horn? The little horn is government-church combined, isn't it? Church-state.
00:09:37They're not paying attention to God's word, are they? And of course, we went through all the studies
00:09:41about they have lifted tradition above God's word. And this is what she said. We are to recognize
00:09:49human government and obey as a sacred duty within its legitimate sphere. She goes on, she says,
00:09:56but when its claims conflict with the claims of God, we must obey God rather than men. As Peter
00:10:05said, amen. God's word must be recognized as above all human legislation. A thus saith the Lord,
00:10:13get this, a thus saith the Lord is not to be set aside for a thus saith the church or a thus saith the
00:10:22state. And we know that the little horn is that combined. See? The crown of Christ is
00:10:27to be lifted above the diadems of earthly potentates. End quote. Wonderful quotes for
00:10:34us to contemplate and always remember. Now, as I listed these rules, these rules sound fair,
00:10:40don't they? They did at the time. In fact, I have yet to have one honest person that is
00:10:45searching for Bible truth. Tell me that these three simple rules are unfair. Now, they may
00:10:52not agree with some things they learned along the way. But they did agree that these main
00:10:57rules of study were indeed fair. I also stated, if you recall, that there must be an understanding
00:11:07of a few biblical pillars, doctrines, in order to understand end time prophecy. We've seen
00:11:13this. For example, Bible truths dealing with man's mortality or the truth about hell, what
00:11:19the Bible teaches about that. The law of God, the Ten Commandments, and the sanctuary, etc.
00:11:25They need to be understood or prophecy is not going to make complete sense. God's not the
00:11:31author of confusion, beloved. The devil is. So we need to understand some doctrines to understand
00:11:39prophecy. And we have seen this to be the case throughout our series. I believe that wholeheartedly.
00:11:47We have had to get into these biblical pillars, for example, like the law of God, and especially
00:11:54the sanctuary, all the types and the shadows, as we've gone along in our studies of the time
00:12:01and the end. Haven't we seen these fit together as puzzle pieces and they fit perfectly? I believe
00:12:09so. That's the feedback I've been getting from a number of people as well. And if you didn't
00:12:16know a thing about the sanctuary and its services, you wouldn't understand the book of Daniel, period.
00:12:22Oh, there are theories out there, but you'll find that those theories have contradictions
00:12:29within every theory. We don't have contradictions, because we're going by the weight of evidence
00:12:35that God has shared with us. And so, I brought these rules to your attention again, so you can
00:12:42see that they're very fair. They work out perfectly, in fact, when studying all scripture. And I encourage
00:12:49that. Now, I have entitled, as I've said earlier, this series of studies of Daniel 9, the Annihilator.
00:13:01Chapter 7 introduced us to the little horn power, as I called that series of studies, the
00:13:07bold pretender, you will remember, who rose to power claiming the throne of God and claiming
00:13:13to rule his church on earth. Chapter 8, we continued our look at the little horn power, who had also
00:13:19become the desolator. As Papal Rome separated the people of God from the heavenly prince and
00:13:26his sanctuary, literally sending them into desolation for 1,260 years, remember, in the wilderness.
00:13:34He separated them on the spiritual plane, as we've seen. Now, we will see the little horn
00:13:40as also the annihilator, as he tries to put God's church, God's people, and the Messiah
00:13:48completely out of existence.
00:13:53And I'll bring to you a remembrance, as long as we're doing that, before I get started here.
00:13:58I want you to remember that Daniel is essentially composed of two books in one. You recall that?
00:14:03The first book comprises chapters 1 through 7, and the second book is composed of chapters
00:14:088 through 12. It is very important to note and remember that Daniel chapters 8 through 12
00:14:17is the sealed book of Daniel 12 and verse 4, as well as that little book of Revelation
00:14:22chapter 10. Let's look at those again to refresh our memories. Daniel 12 and verse 4 says,
00:14:28But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book even to the time of the end.
00:14:33Where are we living in? We're living in the time of the end.
00:14:36Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased about the prophecies.
00:14:40How is that so? How was, if he sealed the book, how are we learning more and more about
00:14:47the prophecies now, compared to back then? Revelation 10, verses 1 and 2.
00:14:55And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud, and a rainbow
00:15:01was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, his feet as pillars of fire.
00:15:05And he had in his hand a little book open. And he set his right foot upon the sea and his
00:15:12left foot on the earth. And so, we need to remember that. When we get into Daniel 7 and
00:15:21onward, basically, the book of Revelation 10 is open. Daniel sealed it. In particular,
00:15:29the knowledge of Daniel 8 and verse 14, the 2300 years, that prophecy, that's mainly what was sealed
00:15:40and it had been opened, and we found in 1844. Now, in Daniel 8, we were introduced to the longest
00:15:48time prophecy in the entire Bible. That's what verse 14 is. And Daniel chapter 9 goes back to
00:15:54explaining much more about it. And as we begin Daniel 9, as is our custom, and is sound Bible
00:16:03study practice, let's read the entire chapter, Daniel chapter 9, to get the overall message.
00:16:11So, bear with me. Daniel chapter 9, verse 1. In the first year of the writing, and we'll get back
00:16:18into it. We'll go line upon line. That's what we do. Because we want to know what the Bible is
00:16:23telling us. We don't go into the Word of God with our preconceived ideas and search for those
00:16:29scriptures that build up our preconceived ideas. We want to know what the Bible is telling us.
00:16:35What is God telling me? Not, I want to find just what I want to hear. We're interested in the truth,
00:16:44aren't we? I hope and pray that you are. I am.
00:16:47In the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus, the seed of the Medes, which was made king over
00:16:57the realm of the Chaldeans. In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood by books
00:17:02the number of the years, we'll get into this, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the
00:17:08prophet, that he would accomplish 70 years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
00:17:13And I set my face unto the Lord God to seek by prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth
00:17:21and ashes. And I prayed unto the Lord my God and made my confession and said, O Lord, the great and
00:17:27dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him and to them that keep his commandments.
00:17:35Verse 5. We have sinned, have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly and have rebelled even by
00:17:42departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments. Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the
00:17:50prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people
00:17:56of the land. Verse 7. O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces,
00:18:04as at this day. To the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel that are near
00:18:11and that are far, far off, through all the countries, whither thou hast driven them, because of their
00:18:17trespass, that they have trespassed against thee. O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our
00:18:25kings, to our princes, to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. To the Lord our God belong
00:18:31mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him. He's quick to forgive, isn't he, friends?
00:18:38Quick to forgive. Verse 9. To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness, though
00:18:46we have rebelled against him. Verse 10. Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God
00:18:50to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. Yea, all Israel
00:18:58have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice. Therefore
00:19:03the curse is poured upon us. And he's talking about the curse that Moses talked about there
00:19:09in Deuteronomy 28, I think it is. Therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that
00:19:14is written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
00:19:19And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges, that judged
00:19:25us by bringing upon us a great evil. For under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath
00:19:30been done upon Jerusalem. As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come
00:19:36upon us. Yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our
00:19:41iniquities and understand thy truth. Therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evil and brought
00:19:47it upon us. For the Lord our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth. For we obeyed
00:19:53not his voice. Verse 15. And now, O Lord our God, that hath brought thy people forth out
00:20:01of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hath gotten thee renowned, as at this day
00:20:07we have sinned, we have done wickedly. O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech
00:20:14thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain,
00:20:21because for our sins and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are
00:20:28become a reproach to all that are about us. Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of
00:20:34thy servant and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is
00:20:41desolate for the Lord's sake. Right here we see that Daniel had a misunderstanding of what
00:20:49sanctuary it was that was going to be cleansed.
00:20:56Verse 18. O my God, incline thine ear and hear. Open thine eyes and behold our desolations
00:21:03in the city which is called by thy name. For we do not present our supplications before thee
00:21:09for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord,
00:21:17hearken and do. Defer not for thine own sake. O my God, for thy city and thy people are called
00:21:25by thy name. And whilst I was speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of
00:21:31my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain
00:21:36of my God. Verse 21. Yea, whilst I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen
00:21:42in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of
00:21:48the evening oblation. That's the evening sacrifice. And he informed me and talked with me and said,
00:21:53O Daniel, I've now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. Verse 23. At the beginning of
00:22:01thy supplications, the commandment came forth, and I am come to show thee, for thou art greatly
00:22:06beloved. Each one of us are friends. Therefore understand the matter and consider the vision.
00:22:13Verse 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city to finish the
00:22:20transgression and to make an end of sins and to make reconciliation for iniquity and to bring
00:22:25in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy and to anoint the
00:22:30most holy. We're going to break this down in coming studies. Verse 25. Know therefore and
00:22:35understand that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem
00:22:40unto the Messiah, the Prince, that's Jesus, shall be seven weeks and threescore and two weeks.
00:22:46That's 69 weeks. The street shall be built again and the wall, even in troublous times.
00:22:52Verse 26. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself.
00:23:00And the people of the Prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary,
00:23:05and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
00:23:10Oh, friends, I can't wait to get to this part. Break it all down. It's remarkable. Verse 27.
00:23:16And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week, and in the midst of the week he shall
00:23:21cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. We've got people today that want to have
00:23:27the sacrifices, keep the feast days. And for the overspreading of abominations, he shall
00:23:34make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the
00:23:43desolate. That was a lot to get through, wasn't it? I need to take a drink, excuse me here.
00:23:59And so, as we see as chapter 9 begins, Jerusalem was in ruins, and the prophet Daniel was diligently
00:24:09studying the 70-year prophecy of Jeremiah chapter 25.
00:24:14And so, let's read this prophecy. I think it will give us a better understanding of Daniel's
00:24:19position and his misunderstanding of the vision that he saw in Daniel 8 and concerning the
00:24:252300 years.
00:24:26Let's go to Jeremiah 25 and begin with verse 8.
00:24:31It says,
00:24:32Therefore, thus saith the Lord of hosts, because ye have not heard my words, behold, I will
00:24:38sin and take all the families of the north, saith the Lord, and Nebuchadnezzar, the king
00:24:43of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants
00:24:48thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make
00:24:54them an astonishment and a hissing in perpetual desolations.
00:24:58Verse 10.
00:25:01Moreover, I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice
00:25:06of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light
00:25:11of the candle.
00:25:12Verse 11.
00:25:14And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment.
00:25:19This is the Lord talking.
00:25:20And these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
00:25:28Verse 12.
00:25:29And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king
00:25:33of Babylon.
00:25:33This is not an apocalyptic prophecy, by the way.
00:25:36This is actual seventy years.
00:25:38He says,
00:25:39When seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation
00:25:43saith the Lord for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual
00:25:48desolations.
00:25:51And verse 13.
00:25:52And I will bring upon that land all my words, which I have pronounced against it, even all
00:25:56that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.
00:26:01He had Jeremiah write these things down.
00:26:05And this is what Daniel went to.
00:26:08He's reading these words out of Jeremiah.
00:26:14And so, it kind of gives us a good idea of what Daniel's saying.
00:26:17He's at seventy years.
00:26:18We're coming up to the end of seventy years here.
00:26:21And all of a sudden, there's twenty-three hundred years?
00:26:26So, what I want to do, I want to, let's do this.
00:26:34Let me give a quick overview of chapter nine, and then we'll get into the specifics line upon
00:26:39line, like we do when the Bible tells us to do.
00:26:42Now, there was a specific reason Daniel was studying this particular seventy-year prophecy.
00:26:50Through Jeremiah, God had promised that the captivity of Israel would last only seventy
00:26:57years.
00:26:57We just read it.
00:26:58But eleven years earlier, God had seemed to indicate that the sanctuary and the people
00:27:03would be trampled underfoot for twenty-three hundred years, according to Daniel 8 and verse
00:27:08fourteen.
00:27:09And so, this apparent discrepancy really perplexed Daniel.
00:27:13He couldn't comprehend how the prophecy of Jeremiah 25 could be reconciled with the one
00:27:19in Daniel 8 and verse fourteen.
00:27:22And so, then Daniel utters one of the most deeply spiritual prayers in the entire Bible.
00:27:29And if you just study that part, he first confessed his sin and that of his people, that's verses
00:27:36four through eleven.
00:27:38Next, he described the results of his sin and that of his people, verses eleven to fourteen.
00:27:43And finally, he interceded before God, asking him to restore Israel to its land.
00:27:49That's verses fifteen to nineteen.
00:27:52And the urgency of Daniel's prayer was directly related to the vision he had received eleven years
00:27:57earlier in Daniel 8.
00:28:00He seemed to surmise that perhaps God now intended to prolong the seventy years from seventy to
00:28:07twenty-three hundred years because of the covenant unfaithfulness of Israel.
00:28:12And obviously, Daniel didn't want the seventy years to be extended to twenty-three hundred
00:28:16years.
00:28:16Who would?
00:28:18So, he poured out his heart to God, like he had done before, pleading for forgiveness.
00:28:23And in response to Daniel's plea, God sent Gabriel to inform him that his prayer had been
00:28:32accepted and that an explanation would be given.
00:28:36The desolation of Jerusalem in Daniel 9 and verse 2 motivated Daniel's prayer and the promise
00:28:42of Jerusalem's restoration and rebuilding was the answer to it.
00:28:46Now, in verses twenty-four to twenty-seven, Gabriel explained that the city of Jerusalem and
00:28:54his people would be given another opportunity.
00:28:57The city, the temple, we read there, the walls would be rebuilt according to the schedule
00:29:02of Jeremiah's seventy-year prophecy.
00:29:04So, in Daniel 9, verse twenty-four to twenty-seven, though, it talks about seventy weeks.
00:29:13Some people get confused, see.
00:29:16That is apocalyptic and it's four hundred and ninety years.
00:29:19And so, we see that four hundred and ninety years would be given Israel to redeem her past
00:29:24failures.
00:29:26And at the very end of this period, God would even send the Messiah, Messiah the Prince,
00:29:31we read, who would make a final, urgent appeal to Israel.
00:29:35But this appeal would fall upon deaf ears.
00:29:38And as a result, the theocracy would come to an end.
00:29:44Jerusalem would be destroyed.
00:29:46The temple demolished.
00:29:48And the people of Israel scattered among the nations.
00:29:53So, there's a rough overview of it.
00:29:55And as you look at, you remember chapter eight, and you're thinking, I encourage you to think
00:30:03about it.
00:30:04And then, we just read chapter nine.
00:30:07I think it's rather obvious that chapters eight and nine are linked together.
00:30:11Though almost all Protestant and Roman Catholic scholars fail to see it.
00:30:17And I challenge you, you go look.
00:30:19They don't see a link at all between chapters eight and nine.
00:30:25And that's on purpose.
00:30:27Because you've got to consider the source.
00:30:29The source is Satan.
00:30:30He put out the counter-reformation with two opposing thoughts and theories on prophecy.
00:30:38Futurism, preterism.
00:30:40And then all kinds of different things in between there.
00:30:43People just make up.
00:30:44It's remarkable to me.
00:30:46Some of the things I read.
00:30:47But they don't see that.
00:30:49They don't see a link.
00:30:52And frankly, that's puzzling.
00:30:54And that there are multiple textual and contextual reasons to link the two chapters.
00:31:00You can't escape the idea that this is purposely done, friends.
00:31:04Is what I'm saying.
00:31:05To encourage belief in the futurist theory, especially, espoused by Jesuit Francisco Ribera.
00:31:12And so what I'm going to do, I want to take a look at 12 reasons why these two chapters must be connected.
00:31:20And I think you'll see that it's obvious they're connected.
00:31:23The first link.
00:31:24The first link.
00:31:26Daniel 8 contains a vision.
00:31:30Kazan, remember that word.
00:31:31In verses 1 through 12.
00:31:33And an audition.
00:31:35The audition basically is the two beings that are speaking to each other.
00:31:38It's referred to as an audition.
00:31:40Those are in verses 13.
00:31:42In 14, excuse me.
00:31:43Gabriel then explains the vision in verses 19 to 26.
00:31:47And as we learned in our study of this chapter, while all the elements of the vision were explained,
00:31:53the audition, about the 2300 years, was left unexplained.
00:31:57And this was presumably due to the fact that Daniel got ill.
00:32:02And Gabriel wasn't able to finish his explanation.
00:32:05That's Daniel 8, verse 27.
00:32:07It appears that Daniel's illness was caused by his inability to reconcile the meaning of Jeremiah's 70-year prophecy, right?
00:32:14With the prophecy of the 2300 years.
00:32:17After all, how could God's people be restored to their land after 70 years
00:32:21if their city and temple were to be trampled upon by the little horn for 2300 years?
00:32:26This is what Daniel's thinking.
00:32:28We also know that Daniel saw the Messiah would be killed.
00:32:32It's in the timeline of the 2300 years.
00:32:36And I'm sure, absolutely positive, that added to his sudden illness.
00:32:40A second link.
00:32:42When Daniel received the vision of chapter 8 in 550 BC, Babylon had not yet fallen.
00:32:49Remember, we talked about that.
00:32:51On the other hand, when the events of Daniel 9 transpired in 538 BC, Babylon had just fallen.
00:32:57And Medo-Persia had taken over the kingdom.
00:33:00We know all about that in Daniel chapter 5 when we studied that story all out.
00:33:05And the hand that appeared and wrote the warning on the wall, you recall.
00:33:09Daniel knew that the fall of Babylon was the forerunner that Israel would soon be released from bondage.
00:33:16And yet, nothing could be seen on the horizon to indicate that such a release was imminent.
00:33:23Daniel knew that Jeremiah's 70 years had begun in 605 BC when he and his three friends had been taken to Babylon.
00:33:31He knew that.
00:33:32He understood that.
00:33:35So, he also understood that the release of Israel must take place around the year 536 BC.
00:33:41He's figuring the 70 years, see.
00:33:43That's the second link.
00:33:45Third, there can be little doubt that the prophecy of the 2300 days years haunted Daniel at this point in time.
00:33:53He surmised that Israel's unfaithfulness was so great that God had decided to prolong Israel's captivity from 70 years to 2300 years.
00:34:05This is the reason at the start of chapter 9, Daniel was studying Jeremiah's 70-year prophecy.
00:34:12He wanted to know how this prophecy was related to the 2300 days and years.
00:34:18So, you have that as a link.
00:34:20Link 4.
00:34:21Daniel's prayer, which immediately follows his study of Jeremiah's prophecy, includes a confession of Israel's sin and an appeal to God's mercy.
00:34:33The word defer, at the climax of his prayer, friends, it has profound significance.
00:34:39That's in verse 19.
00:34:41The Hebrew word akar is variously translated in the Old Testament.
00:34:45It can mean to loiter, to delay, to procrastinate, to hinder, to tarry, to slacken.
00:34:57You see, there's not enough English words to define, oftentimes, the Hebrew words.
00:35:03Hebrew words are very descriptive.
00:35:04In Exodus 22 and verse 29, the word akar is translated as delay.
00:35:12In Genesis 24 and verse 56, it's rendered hinder.
00:35:17Deuteronomy 23 and verse 21 uses it as slack.
00:35:21Judges 5 and verse 28 translates it as tarry, as does Habakkuk 2 and verse 3.
00:35:28And Proverbs 23 and verse 30.
00:35:30And so, Daniel feared that God would delay the release of Israel beyond the 70 years.
00:35:36And so, he poured out his heart in prayer, appealing to God's covenant, loyalty, and faithfulness.
00:35:47Now, we see, and I mention it as I'm reading it, Daniel made the same type of mistaken assumption that the Adventists had made in 1844 A.D.
00:35:55He thought that the sanctuary that needed to be cleansed was the one in Jerusalem, whereas the Adventists thought it meant the world was going to be cleansed at Christ's second coming.
00:36:07Link 5.
00:36:11The very same angel who had explained the vision of Daniel 8 came back to explain the time element, which had been left unexplained.
00:36:19To put it another way, the angel came back to finish in Daniel 9 what he had started in Daniel 8.
00:36:28And so, these two chapters are linked by the very same angel, Gabriel.
00:36:33Furthermore, the unexplained time element of Daniel 8 was later explained in Daniel 9 by the same angel who began his explanation with a time prophecy.
00:36:43That is to say, the unexplained time element of Daniel 8 was explained with a time prophecy in Daniel 9.
00:36:53That's verse 24 to 27.
00:36:55We'll get into that as we go on in our studies.
00:36:59Link number 6.
00:37:01Gabriel told Daniel in verse 24,
00:37:05Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city.
00:37:10The word determined in the Hebrew is katak.
00:37:15It can mean to cut, to decide, to decree, to ordain, to appoint.
00:37:21The New English Bible is interesting.
00:37:24It translates it as marked out.
00:37:26I found that to be interesting.
00:37:28Marked out.
00:37:29The word appears only this time in the Hebrew Bible,
00:37:33but in Mishnahic Hebrew, it is frequently used in a literal sense.
00:37:38It describes the act of cutting off parts of animals for the sacrificial service.
00:37:44It refers to the cutting off of the foreskin and circumcision.
00:37:48It's the word that's used for cutting off a lamp wick.
00:37:51And another example is a miner cutting out ore from a mountain.
00:37:56And so figuratively, the word is also used to describe the act of cutting or dividing a Bible verse into two parts,
00:38:02so you can study it.
00:38:05And so the root meaning of this word appears to be cut off.
00:38:10Now, when something is cut off, it's got to be cut off from something, right?
00:38:16It's not just there all by itself.
00:38:17You can say, oh, that's cut off.
00:38:19But it came from something originally, but was cut off of it.
00:38:22For example, if you're going to cut a branch off a tree,
00:38:25there's got to be a tree to cut it off from.
00:38:26So, we've got to ask, from what are the 70 weeks cut off?
00:38:33The answer is that it must have been cut off from the larger prophecy of the 2300 days years.
00:38:39And that links back to chapter 8.
00:38:43A seventh link.
00:38:45Daniel 8 and 9 share a common central theme.
00:38:53Both chapters deal with the trampling of the city, the people, the sanctuary, and the prince.
00:39:00However, and we're going to study this out in more detail when we get to Daniel chapter 11.
00:39:08And so, while Daniel 8 focused primarily on the trampling of spiritual Israel by the papacy,
00:39:13Daniel 9 has to do with the trampling of literal Israel by Rome.
00:39:18It's obvious that Daniel didn't clearly comprehend the shift from literal Israel to spiritual Israel.
00:39:25You see, because if he would have understood that,
00:39:27he would have realized that the 70 weeks apply to literal Jews in literal Jerusalem with a literal temple.
00:39:33While the 2300 days have to do with spiritual Israel in spiritual Jerusalem with a spiritual temple.
00:39:39And so, Daniel's failure to comprehend this distinction led him to believe
00:39:45that the 2300 days applied to literal Israel.
00:39:49An idea he couldn't reconcile with Jeremiah's 70 year prophecy.
00:39:54Link number 8.
00:39:55To be concise, Daniel 8 refers to both pagan and papal Rome.
00:40:03Daniel 9 then picks up on the destruction of literal Jerusalem by pagan Rome.
00:40:08And Daniel 10 through 12, those chapters take us further ahead to the destruction of spiritual Jerusalem by papal Rome.
00:40:17And so, perhaps this is the reason Daniel 8 provides only one little horn
00:40:21to represent both imperial, you know, pagan and papal Rome.
00:40:25Daniel 9 then explains the role of pagan Rome and the desolation of literal Israel.
00:40:32While Daniel chapters 10 through 12 expound upon the role of papal Rome and the trampling of spiritual Israel.
00:40:39That links them together.
00:40:42Link number 9.
00:40:44After God gave Daniel the vision of chapter 8,
00:40:47Gabriel was commanded, and the verb is imperative,
00:40:51to help Daniel understand, it's the word ben.
00:40:53Gabriel then undertook the task of explaining the meaning of the ram,
00:40:59the he-goat, the little horn, right?
00:41:02Yet, at the end of chapter 8,
00:41:04we're informed that Daniel was astonished at the vision,
00:41:07but he didn't understand it.
00:41:08There's that word again, ben.
00:41:09That's verse 27.
00:41:11It becomes obvious that if Daniel did not understand
00:41:14the vision of the end of the chapter,
00:41:17then Gabriel had not completed his commanded mission
00:41:19to make him understand it.
00:41:22Doesn't that make sense?
00:41:24And so, we therefore expect Gabriel to come back at some time,
00:41:27to complete his mission.
00:41:30Did he come back?
00:41:33Link number 10.
00:41:34In Daniel 9, verse 2,
00:41:38we're told that Daniel understood,
00:41:39there's that Hebrew word ben again,
00:41:42that Jeremiah's prophecy was to be fulfilled
00:41:44at the end of the 70-year period.
00:41:47But as we've seen,
00:41:48there were many things which Daniel still did not understand.
00:41:52So, in Daniel 9, verses 22 and 23,
00:41:55we find Gabriel returning to speak with Daniel.
00:41:58He told Daniel that he had come to give him understanding.
00:42:01There's that word, ben.
00:42:03And then, in the imperative,
00:42:06he commands Daniel,
00:42:07understand ben the matter,
00:42:09and consider ben,
00:42:10that's the same word,
00:42:11the vision.
00:42:12Maure.
00:42:13Remember that?
00:42:14Deals with the 2300 years.
00:42:17The question which begs to be asked at this point is,
00:42:21understand which vision?
00:42:23To this point, Daniel 9,
00:42:25there was no vision.
00:42:27There was only prayer, right?
00:42:29So, this must mean that Gabriel returned
00:42:31to explain the vision of the previous chapter.
00:42:35And significantly,
00:42:36after Gabriel gave his added explanation,
00:42:39in Daniel 9,
00:42:40we're told that Daniel understood ben the thing,
00:42:44and had understanding
00:42:45that he would ben in the vision.
00:42:48Daniel 10, verse 1,
00:42:50maure.
00:42:50He understood the maure.
00:42:53Obviously, the further explanation,
00:42:55Daniel 9,
00:42:56cleared up many misconceptions
00:42:57which Daniel had entertained
00:42:58after the vision of Daniel 8.
00:43:01That's a link.
00:43:03How they could say there's not a link
00:43:05between 8 and 9 is astounding to me.
00:43:08But not considering that they're believing
00:43:10into the theories
00:43:11put forth in the Counter-Reformation.
00:43:14Link number 11.
00:43:16Another clear link between the two chapters
00:43:18is Daniel's remark
00:43:20in Daniel 9, verse 21.
00:43:23He says,
00:43:23Yea, whilst I was speaking in prayer,
00:43:25even the man Gabriel,
00:43:26whom I had seen in the vision
00:43:28at the beginning,
00:43:30being caused to fly swiftly,
00:43:32touched me about the time
00:43:33of the evening oblation.
00:43:35The expression,
00:43:37whom I had seen in the vision
00:43:38at the beginning,
00:43:40friends,
00:43:40that clearly echoes back
00:43:41to Daniel chapter 8.
00:43:44It bears repeating
00:43:45that there was no new vision
00:43:47in Daniel 9.
00:43:48Just said that.
00:43:49So Daniel must be referring
00:43:51to the vision given
00:43:52in Daniel 8.
00:43:55And this is irrefutable evidence
00:43:57that the vision spoken of
00:43:58by Gabriel in Daniel 9
00:43:59is the same as the one
00:44:01which had been given
00:44:03in chapter 8.
00:44:05And here's a twelfth link.
00:44:08Even though the vision of Daniel 8
00:44:11was given during the reign of Babylon,
00:44:14read that in Daniel 8, verse 1,
00:44:16Daniel was already in Shushan,
00:44:18and remember,
00:44:19the capital of the Medo-Persian Empire.
00:44:22Remember that God began the vision
00:44:24with Medo-Persia
00:44:25and not with Babylon?
00:44:27The prayer and explanation
00:44:29in Daniel 9
00:44:29also occur within the period
00:44:31of the Medo-Persian kingdom.
00:44:34And though media will be dropped,
00:44:36as I mentioned before,
00:44:37in chapters 10 through 12,
00:44:38and only Persia is referred to,
00:44:41the fact still remains
00:44:42that all the visions
00:44:42and explanations of Daniel
00:44:46chapters 8 through 12
00:44:47are given within the period
00:44:48of the Medo-Persian kingdom.
00:44:51Now, this would seem to indicate
00:44:53that all these chapters
00:44:54deal with the same subject matter.
00:44:57They do.
00:45:01But there's something else to it.
00:45:03A structural matter
00:45:05will also help us discern
00:45:07the relationship
00:45:07between the two chapters.
00:45:10If you take a close look
00:45:11at the great chain prophecies
00:45:13of the book of Daniel,
00:45:15they reveal that each has a vision
00:45:17and its corresponding explanation,
00:45:19except for Daniel 11.
00:45:20I want you to notice,
00:45:22Daniel 2 has a dream or vision
00:45:25and an auditory explanation.
00:45:28You get to Daniel 7,
00:45:30has a dream
00:45:31and an auditory explanation.
00:45:34Daniel 8 has a vision
00:45:36and an auditory explanation.
00:45:39Daniel 9 has a vision
00:45:41and a...
00:45:42Oh, wait.
00:45:44Daniel 8 doesn't have a vision.
00:45:45Or, Daniel 9 doesn't have a vision.
00:45:48Daniel 9 only has
00:45:50an auditory explanation.
00:45:52Daniel chapters 10 through 12
00:45:54have only auditory explanation,
00:45:57but no new vision.
00:46:00The fact that the last vision
00:46:02of Daniel is in chapter 8,
00:46:04with the exception
00:46:04of the personal manifestation
00:46:07of Jesus in chapter 10,
00:46:10I think that would seem to indicate
00:46:12that the rest of the book
00:46:12is simply an auditory explanation
00:46:14of chapter 8.
00:46:16This means that there is
00:46:18no new material
00:46:19of substance
00:46:20given after Daniel chapter 8.
00:46:25Chapters 9 through 12
00:46:26simply explain
00:46:27and amplify
00:46:29the vision of Daniel 8
00:46:32and the audition already given.
00:46:35This would also prove
00:46:36that Daniel 8 through 12
00:46:37is a book within a book,
00:46:39which is to say,
00:46:40the sealed book of Daniel 12,
00:46:41verse 4.
00:46:41Now,
00:46:45I've been going through all that.
00:46:46Let's go line upon line.
00:46:48Let's learn
00:46:48Daniel's prayer
00:46:50and the details
00:46:51that Gabriel shared with him.
00:46:53Let's go to Daniel 9,
00:46:56verse 1.
00:47:00Daniel 9 and verse 1.
00:47:02The first year of Darius,
00:47:04the son of Ahasuerus,
00:47:05of the seed of the Medes,
00:47:07which was made king
00:47:08over the realm
00:47:09of the Chaldeans,
00:47:10in the first year
00:47:10of his reign,
00:47:13I, Daniel,
00:47:14understood by books
00:47:15the number
00:47:16of the years
00:47:18whereof the word
00:47:19of the Lord
00:47:20came to Jeremiah the prophet
00:47:21that he would accomplish
00:47:2270 years
00:47:23in the desolations
00:47:25of Jerusalem.
00:47:30At the beginning
00:47:31of chapter 9,
00:47:35we notice that
00:47:37Darius the Mede
00:47:37was in his first year's king.
00:47:40In fact,
00:47:41when you think about this,
00:47:42you rarely see
00:47:43through ancient history
00:47:44that the prime minister
00:47:45of a conquered kingdom,
00:47:46that would be Daniel,
00:47:48you rarely see
00:47:48that they're appointed
00:47:49as a high official
00:47:50by the conqueror.
00:47:53But,
00:47:53Daniel was different.
00:47:57Because of his abilities
00:47:58and integrity,
00:47:59the Persians
00:48:00didn't execute him,
00:48:01but established him
00:48:02in high office.
00:48:05Now,
00:48:06chronologists
00:48:07place Daniel 9
00:48:08in 538 B.C.
00:48:09and Daniel 8
00:48:10in 550 B.C.
00:48:11That's 11 to 12 years earlier.
00:48:14And so,
00:48:14the prayer of Daniel
00:48:15in chapter 9
00:48:16is a good 11 years
00:48:17after the vision
00:48:18of chapter 8.
00:48:20In verse 2,
00:48:22Daniel studied
00:48:23the prophecy
00:48:24from Jeremiah 25.
00:48:25We read it earlier.
00:48:27It foretold
00:48:28of the 70 years
00:48:29of captivity
00:48:30in Babylon.
00:48:34And,
00:48:34Jeremiah specifically says,
00:48:37as we read,
00:48:38Nebuchadnezzar
00:48:39was going to
00:48:40capture Judah.
00:48:43And so,
00:48:43Daniel anticipated
00:48:45that the captivity
00:48:47was coming to an end.
00:48:48And Jeremiah says
00:48:49that at the end
00:48:50of the 70 years,
00:48:51God will punish
00:48:52the king of Babylon
00:48:53and that nation,
00:48:55save the Lord,
00:48:55for their iniquity
00:48:56in the land
00:48:57of the Chaldeans
00:48:57and will make it
00:48:58perpetual desolations.
00:49:01Daniel read that.
00:49:05And this is
00:49:05very interesting.
00:49:07Here we encounter
00:49:08some of the clearest
00:49:10evidence as to
00:49:11the biblical authenticity
00:49:12of the year-day principle.
00:49:15And the fact that
00:49:16Daniel understood
00:49:17that principle
00:49:18as effective
00:49:19in the 2300-day prophecy
00:49:21of chapter 8.
00:49:23He obviously
00:49:24and mistakenly
00:49:25assumed that
00:49:27the sanctuary
00:49:27described in verse 14
00:49:29was the one
00:49:29that then lay desolate
00:49:31in Jerusalem.
00:49:32Therefore,
00:49:32its cleansing
00:49:33as prophesied
00:49:34in this verse
00:49:35referred to
00:49:36the restoration
00:49:37of the literal temple.
00:49:39Geesh,
00:49:39no wonder he fainted.
00:49:42He thought,
00:49:4270 years,
00:49:43it's about to come true.
00:49:45We're about to be liberated.
00:49:46Wait a minute.
00:49:482300 years?
00:49:50I think we all would
00:49:52faint.
00:49:56But this
00:49:57explains why
00:49:58he consulted
00:49:59Jeremiah's prophecy
00:50:00regarding the 70 years
00:50:01that God decreed
00:50:02for Israel's
00:50:03servitude to Babylon.
00:50:06Little wonder,
00:50:06also,
00:50:07as to his anguished
00:50:08prayer of confession
00:50:09for the sins
00:50:09of God's people
00:50:10in those following
00:50:12verses of chapter 9.
00:50:13You know,
00:50:15he was effectively
00:50:16saying to the Lord,
00:50:18Lord,
00:50:19you said we could
00:50:19go home in 70 years.
00:50:21What's this now
00:50:22about 2300 years?
00:50:26I mean,
00:50:27stop and think
00:50:28this through.
00:50:31About the day-year principle,
00:50:32if the 2300 days
00:50:34were understood
00:50:34literally
00:50:35as six years
00:50:36and four months,
00:50:37that would have been
00:50:38cause for rejoicing
00:50:39on Daniel's part,
00:50:40wouldn't it?
00:50:40He wouldn't have fainted
00:50:41to say nothing
00:50:42of the 1150 days
00:50:44as some ministers
00:50:44allege
00:50:45and throw out there
00:50:46as a theory.
00:50:48Daniel's reaction
00:50:49to Gabriel's command
00:50:50in Daniel 8,
00:50:51verse 26
00:50:52and the verses
00:50:52that follow,
00:50:53they offer some
00:50:54of the plainest
00:50:55evidence,
00:50:55friends,
00:50:56that the 2300-day
00:50:57prophecy was understood
00:50:58by him as referring
00:50:59to years
00:51:00and not literal days.
00:51:02Think it through.
00:51:05In the defeat
00:51:06of Babylon
00:51:07to the kingdom
00:51:08of Medo-Persia,
00:51:09Daniel must have
00:51:11felt it to be
00:51:11the fulfillment
00:51:12of God's punishment
00:51:13on the Babylonians
00:51:14for their iniquity.
00:51:16He probably believed
00:51:17that the Jews
00:51:18would have imminently
00:51:19returned to Jerusalem.
00:51:21The chronology
00:51:22of the 70 years
00:51:23from beginning to end
00:51:24is believed
00:51:25to have ranged
00:51:25from the summer
00:51:26of 605 B.C.,
00:51:27remember when he was
00:51:28taken captive,
00:51:29to 536 B.C.
00:51:31And by his calculations,
00:51:32Daniel believed
00:51:33he was two years
00:51:34from the 70-year
00:51:34prophecy fulfillment.
00:51:37However,
00:51:37as we will see
00:51:40in Daniel's prayer
00:51:41in verses 3-19,
00:51:43what he saw
00:51:44in vision in chapter 8
00:51:45caused him to think
00:51:46that the curses
00:51:47given in the Pentateuch
00:51:49were being poured out
00:51:50on the Jews
00:51:52for their evil
00:51:54and disobedience
00:51:55to God.
00:51:58And while he didn't
00:51:59explicitly say so
00:52:00until later
00:52:01in this chapter,
00:52:02he believed
00:52:02that the curses
00:52:03from the law of Moses
00:52:04were in effect.
00:52:04very likely
00:52:06he believed
00:52:07it would take
00:52:082,300 years
00:52:09instead of 70 years
00:52:10for the sanctuary
00:52:11to be restored
00:52:11in Jerusalem.
00:52:14I mean,
00:52:14of course,
00:52:16that would account
00:52:16for his astonishment
00:52:17at the vision.
00:52:19In fact,
00:52:20he also must have
00:52:20been disheartened.
00:52:23You know,
00:52:24that the curses
00:52:26from Deuteronomy 28
00:52:27were prophesied
00:52:28in Daniel 8
00:52:28as a certainty
00:52:29instead of a warning.
00:52:31His prayer
00:52:33that we read
00:52:34in those verses
00:52:35shows that his heart
00:52:36was heavy
00:52:36about the future
00:52:37of the Jews
00:52:37and his mind
00:52:38dwelt on the prophecies
00:52:40that specifically
00:52:41related to his people.
00:52:44And I'm sure
00:52:44that seeing the Messiah
00:52:46dying in the timeline
00:52:46also had a huge effect
00:52:48upon his heart.
00:52:50How could it not?
00:52:52How could it not?
00:52:54Let me share this
00:52:54with you.
00:52:55It's from the book
00:52:56Prophets and Kings
00:52:57page 556.
00:52:59Quote,
00:52:59Daniel's prayer
00:53:00had been offered
00:53:01in the first year
00:53:02of Darius,
00:53:03verse 1.
00:53:04The Median monarch
00:53:06whose general,
00:53:06Cyrus,
00:53:07had wrested
00:53:08from Babylonia,
00:53:09the scepter
00:53:10of universal rule.
00:53:11The reign of Darius
00:53:13was honored of God.
00:53:14To him was sent
00:53:15the angel Gabriel
00:53:16to confirm
00:53:17and to strengthen him.
00:53:18That's Daniel 11,
00:53:19verse 1.
00:53:20Upon his death,
00:53:21within about two years
00:53:23of the fall of Babylon,
00:53:24Cyrus succeeded
00:53:25to the throne
00:53:26and the beginning
00:53:27of his reign
00:53:28marked the completion
00:53:30of the 70 years
00:53:32since the first company
00:53:33of Hebrews
00:53:34had been taken
00:53:34by Nebuchadnezzar
00:53:35from their Judean home
00:53:37to Babylon.
00:53:39End quote.
00:53:42And so you see,
00:53:43although Daniel
00:53:44did not completely
00:53:45understand the vision
00:53:46from chapter 8,
00:53:48he tried to study
00:53:49other prophecies,
00:53:50including Jeremiah's,
00:53:52to understand
00:53:53what he saw
00:53:54in that vision
00:53:55of chapter 8.
00:53:56And although
00:53:57it had been
00:53:58over 11 years
00:53:59since that vision,
00:54:00he had not given up
00:54:01on trying to understand it.
00:54:04And I think
00:54:04we would do well
00:54:05to continue studying,
00:54:10even if we don't
00:54:11understand everything.
00:54:13God has also given us
00:54:15clear prophetic messages
00:54:16about our time,
00:54:17which we are finding out,
00:54:18our dear friends.
00:54:21Now we have seen
00:54:22some of these
00:54:23key prophecies
00:54:24in Daniel chapter 2
00:54:25that we've studied out,
00:54:26Daniel chapter 7
00:54:27that we've studied out,
00:54:28Daniel 8.
00:54:29We've seen them
00:54:30come to fruition.
00:54:32And we'll see more
00:54:32later in this chapter
00:54:34as well as in
00:54:35Daniel 11 and 12
00:54:36and throughout
00:54:37the book of Revelation.
00:54:40You see, friends,
00:54:40we are prophetic people.
00:54:42God's end-time remnant are.
00:54:44As were the Jews,
00:54:46actually,
00:54:46with a prophetic identity
00:54:47and message.
00:54:48It's a characteristic
00:54:49of the end-time remnant church,
00:54:51in fact.
00:54:52And so it's crucial,
00:54:54like Daniel,
00:54:55to go before God
00:54:57earnestly in prayer
00:54:58while studying these messages.
00:55:01That's why we always
00:55:02open with prayer
00:55:02so that we will
00:55:04have understanding
00:55:05and understand
00:55:05how to live our lives
00:55:06in this time
00:55:07of earth's history.
00:55:09Let me share this quote.
00:55:10It's from Bunch
00:55:11in his book of Daniel
00:55:14about the prophecies of Daniel.
00:55:18Page 128.
00:55:19Bunch says this,
00:55:20Daniel's second effort
00:55:22to obtain light
00:55:23on his vision
00:55:24was through the study
00:55:26of prophecy.
00:55:28Here is an instance
00:55:29where one prophet
00:55:31searched the writings
00:55:31of others for light.
00:55:33Notice what Bunch says.
00:55:34He says,
00:55:35If it is necessary
00:55:36for a prophet
00:55:37to search the scriptures,
00:55:38it is even more essential
00:55:40that we should do so.
00:55:42End quote.
00:55:42I wholeheartedly agree
00:55:44with Bunch
00:55:46on that.
00:55:48And that statement
00:55:48is just so accurate.
00:55:50Let's go to Daniel 9.
00:55:52Let's go to verse 3.
00:55:54We're going to continue on.
00:55:55Verse 3 through 6.
00:55:57And I set my face
00:55:58unto the Lord God
00:55:59to seek by prayer
00:56:01and supplications
00:56:02with fasting
00:56:03and sackcloth
00:56:04and ashes.
00:56:06And I prayed
00:56:06unto the Lord my God
00:56:08and made my confession
00:56:09and said,
00:56:10O Lord,
00:56:10the great and dreadful God,
00:56:12keeping the covenant
00:56:13and mercy to them
00:56:14that love Him
00:56:15and to them
00:56:16that keep His commandments.
00:56:18We have sinned
00:56:19and have committed iniquity
00:56:21and have done wickedly
00:56:23and have rebelled
00:56:25even by departing
00:56:27from Thy precepts
00:56:28and from Thy judgments.
00:56:29Neither have we hearkened
00:56:31unto Thy servants
00:56:32of prophets
00:56:32which spake in Thy name
00:56:34to our kings,
00:56:35our princes,
00:56:36and our fathers,
00:56:37and to all the people
00:56:38of the land.
00:56:39I can't help but think
00:56:43that Daniel is referring
00:56:44to Jeremiah and Isaiah.
00:56:47You figure out
00:56:48how they treated Jeremiah.
00:56:49His own people
00:56:50treated the prophet Jeremiah
00:56:51as well as Isaiah.
00:56:56But in his study
00:56:58of the books of Isaiah
00:56:59and Jeremiah,
00:57:01especially the latter,
00:57:03Daniel found that
00:57:03the captivity of his people
00:57:05and the destruction
00:57:05of Jerusalem
00:57:06and the temple
00:57:08were the results
00:57:09of their individual
00:57:10and national sins.
00:57:12A punishment
00:57:13for their rebellions
00:57:15against the Lord
00:57:16and refusing to hearken
00:57:17to His messages
00:57:18of warning
00:57:18through His prophets.
00:57:22Jeremiah declared
00:57:23that he had faithfully
00:57:24warned them
00:57:25for 23 years,
00:57:27but they refused
00:57:28to listen.
00:57:32The captivity,
00:57:34the desolation,
00:57:35Babylon came
00:57:37as a result
00:57:38of the rebellion
00:57:38against the Lord.
00:57:40Let's go back
00:57:41to the book
00:57:41Prophets and Kings,
00:57:42pages 454-51,
00:57:44around in there.
00:57:45Notice this,
00:57:46Quote,
00:57:46Foremost among those
00:57:48who were rapidly
00:57:49leading the nation
00:57:50to ruin
00:57:50was Zedekiah,
00:57:52their king,
00:57:53forsaking utterly
00:57:54the counsels
00:57:55of the Lord
00:57:55as given
00:57:56through the prophets,
00:57:57forgetting the debt
00:57:58of gratitude
00:57:59he owed Nebuchadnezzar,
00:58:01violating his solemn
00:58:02oath of allegiance
00:58:03taken in the name
00:58:04of the Lord God
00:58:05of Israel,
00:58:06Judah's king
00:58:07rebelled against
00:58:09the prophets,
00:58:10against his benefactor,
00:58:12that's Nebuchadnezzar,
00:58:13and against his God.
00:58:15End quote.
00:58:18So you see that
00:58:19Daniel does not
00:58:20proclaim his own
00:58:21fidelity in this prayer,
00:58:22does he,
00:58:23before the Lord?
00:58:25Instead of claiming
00:58:25to be pure and holy,
00:58:28this honored prophet,
00:58:30he humbly identifies
00:58:33himself with the
00:58:34really sinful
00:58:36of Israel.
00:58:37And with deep
00:58:38humiliation,
00:58:39with tears,
00:58:40and rending of heart,
00:58:41he pleads for himself
00:58:43and for his people.
00:58:45He lays his soul
00:58:46open before God,
00:58:49confessing his own
00:58:50unworthiness,
00:58:52and acknowledging
00:58:53the Lord's greatness
00:58:54in his majesty.
00:58:57This man,
00:58:59this man whom
00:59:01heaven called
00:59:02greatly beloved,
00:59:05and I'll remind you,
00:59:06in whom no fault
00:59:07could be found,
00:59:09even by his bitterest
00:59:10enemies,
00:59:11they couldn't find
00:59:12anything.
00:59:13He placed himself
00:59:14beneath the load of
00:59:14sin which was
00:59:15oppressing Israel.
00:59:18Haskell says this
00:59:19in his book,
00:59:21The Story of Daniel
00:59:21the Prophet,
00:59:22page 121.
00:59:23He says,
00:59:24quote,
00:59:25Daniel was a
00:59:26representative of
00:59:27Christ,
00:59:28and he had lived
00:59:29so close to God,
00:59:31and knew him
00:59:32so intimately,
00:59:34that the spirit
00:59:35which distinguished
00:59:36Christ from all
00:59:37others was manifest
00:59:38in Daniel also.
00:59:40End quote.
00:59:42Friends,
00:59:42we need to pray
00:59:43for that kind of
00:59:44spirit.
00:59:44Amen?
00:59:47Dare to be a
00:59:47Daniel.
00:59:48You know the old
00:59:48psalm?
00:59:49Daniel 9,
00:59:53verses 4 to 19
00:59:54record one of the
00:59:56outstanding prayers
00:59:57of the entire
00:59:58Old Testament.
00:59:59It's a prayer on
01:00:00behalf of the
01:00:01people of God
01:00:01offered by a
01:00:02sincere and
01:00:04loving man,
01:00:06a faithful man.
01:00:08In his prayer,
01:00:09Daniel counts
01:00:10himself as a
01:00:11sinner with Israel
01:00:1217 times.
01:00:14Check it out.
01:00:1517 times.
01:00:18Daniel begins
01:00:19his prayer and
01:00:20notice he
01:00:21addresses the
01:00:21Almighty as
01:00:22the great and
01:00:23dreadful God.
01:00:27What comes to
01:00:27your mind when
01:00:28you hear that?
01:00:29The great and
01:00:30dreadful God.
01:00:32Well, when I
01:00:33read it, it
01:00:34reminds me of the
01:00:34last part of
01:00:35Revelation chapter
01:00:356.
01:00:38Let me show you
01:00:38what I mean.
01:00:39Go to Revelation
01:00:40chapter 6,
01:00:40verse 15.
01:00:42It says,
01:00:43And the kings of
01:00:43the earth, and the
01:00:44great men, and the
01:00:45rich men, and the
01:00:46chief captains, and the
01:00:47mighty men, and every
01:00:48bondman, and every
01:00:49free man, hid
01:00:50themselves in the
01:00:52dens and in the
01:00:53rocks of the
01:00:53mountains, and said
01:00:55to the mountains and
01:00:56rocks, Fall on us, and
01:00:57hide us from the face
01:00:59of him that sitteth on
01:01:01the throne, and from
01:01:02the wrath of the
01:01:03Lamb.
01:01:04For the great day of
01:01:05his wrath has come,
01:01:06and who shall be
01:01:08able to stand?
01:01:12Daniel says,
01:01:13A great and dreadful
01:01:13God.
01:01:14I always go back to
01:01:15that.
01:01:17And what's
01:01:18interesting about the
01:01:19opening of the seals
01:01:20here in Revelation is
01:01:21that so far in the
01:01:22portrayal of the
01:01:23terrible events that
01:01:25precede the second
01:01:25advent of Christ,
01:01:27there's no indication
01:01:28given that anyone
01:01:30survives, wicked or
01:01:32righteous.
01:01:34Hence the dramatic
01:01:36question, who shall be
01:01:37able to stand?
01:01:40And so one might
01:01:41indeed look at the
01:01:42Savior as that great and
01:01:44dreadful God.
01:01:47However, Revelation
01:01:48chapter 7, when you
01:01:49roll into that, it
01:01:50breaks the sequence of
01:01:51the seals in order to
01:01:52present an answer to
01:01:53that question by
01:01:54describing the 144,000,
01:01:57the remnant, who
01:01:58indeed can stand before
01:02:00God as they have
01:02:01overcome sin, and
01:02:02they're clothed with
01:02:04the righteousness of
01:02:05Christ.
01:02:06And so to the
01:02:07wicked, yes, God is
01:02:10looked upon with dread,
01:02:11for they must face
01:02:12him.
01:02:12They've got a face
01:02:13and clothed with
01:02:14their own filthy
01:02:14rags, their own
01:02:16righteousness.
01:02:18But is that how the
01:02:19righteous look upon
01:02:19their loving Savior?
01:02:21Of course not.
01:02:23Daniel uses the
01:02:24Hebrew word norah,
01:02:25which is translated
01:02:26as dreadful, but
01:02:27means awe-inspiring
01:02:29or revered.
01:02:32He approaches God in
01:02:33prayer with a reverent
01:02:34awe for his Maker.
01:02:36Such a great example
01:02:37of how we should
01:02:38approach our Father
01:02:40in heaven.
01:02:41Amen.
01:02:44Daniel begins his
01:02:45prayer with an
01:02:46acknowledgement of the
01:02:47faithfulness of God.
01:02:49God never fails to
01:02:50keep his promises,
01:02:51friends.
01:02:52He is a covenant
01:02:53keeping God.
01:02:54He will fulfill his
01:02:55part of the agreement.
01:02:56If the covenant
01:02:57fails, we're to
01:02:59blame.
01:03:00See, Hebrews 8,
01:03:01verse 8.
01:03:02He says,
01:03:03keeping the covenant
01:03:04and mercy to them
01:03:05that love him and to
01:03:06them that keep his
01:03:08commandments.
01:03:09Friends, you go
01:03:09through the Bible.
01:03:11Love to God and
01:03:12keeping of the
01:03:13commandments always go
01:03:14together.
01:03:17Do a search yourself.
01:03:18Study it out.
01:03:19Those who love God
01:03:20are admonished to
01:03:21demonstrate that love
01:03:22by keeping his
01:03:23commandments.
01:03:25In fact, Jesus said
01:03:26in John 14,
01:03:27verse 15,
01:03:28if you love me,
01:03:29keep my commandments.
01:03:32The one essential
01:03:33carries the other
01:03:34with it, you see.
01:03:36Love for God will
01:03:36result in glad and
01:03:38willing obedience.
01:03:40Obedience that
01:03:41springs from
01:03:41compulsion or from
01:03:44fear is not the
01:03:45ideal form of
01:03:46obedience.
01:03:48Now, having said
01:03:49that, there may be
01:03:50times, of course,
01:03:51where the motive of
01:03:51love is lacking,
01:03:52might be weak.
01:03:54It's necessary
01:03:55under those
01:03:56circumstances to
01:03:57still render
01:03:57obedience from
01:03:58principle alone.
01:04:00Sometimes we may
01:04:01not feel as we
01:04:02should, but we
01:04:04must still obey
01:04:05the Lord.
01:04:07In the meantime,
01:04:09love should be
01:04:09prayed for.
01:04:11Love needs to be
01:04:11cultivated.
01:04:13A lack of the
01:04:14necessary love
01:04:16should never be
01:04:16made an excuse,
01:04:17friends, for sin,
01:04:18for disobedience.
01:04:21One of the, I think,
01:04:23one of the best
01:04:23human illustrations
01:04:24of obedience that
01:04:25springs from love
01:04:26is that of children
01:04:27to their parents.
01:04:28At least it has been
01:04:30in the past, but we
01:04:30don't see that
01:04:31demonstrated as much
01:04:33here in the time
01:04:33of the end, do we?
01:04:34In fact, that was
01:04:35predicted by Paul in
01:04:36Romans 1 and 2 Timothy
01:04:393.
01:04:40However, the true
01:04:41church at the close
01:04:42of time will be
01:04:44distinguished by its
01:04:45commandment keeping.
01:04:46Look at Revelation
01:04:47chapter 12 and verse
01:04:4817.
01:04:49We've read it many
01:04:50times.
01:04:52And the dragon was
01:04:53wroth with the woman,
01:04:54went to make war with
01:04:55the remnant of her
01:04:56seed, which keep the
01:04:58commandments of God
01:04:59and have the testimony
01:05:01of Jesus Christ.
01:05:05Let me share this.
01:05:06This is from Gilbert.
01:05:10You can find it in
01:05:11Modern Interpreters of
01:05:12the Holy Scriptures,
01:05:13page 128.
01:05:15Notice what Gilbert
01:05:15says.
01:05:16He says, quote,
01:05:17As the prophet read
01:05:18these scriptures in
01:05:19Jeremiah, he decided
01:05:22that he would follow
01:05:23the counsel of God.
01:05:24Knowing that light
01:05:25came to those who
01:05:26sought the Lord and
01:05:27who studied God's
01:05:28word, the prophet
01:05:29determined to follow
01:05:29to the letter, the
01:05:31instruction given
01:05:31through the weeping
01:05:32prophet.
01:05:34It is written,
01:05:35Then shall ye call
01:05:36upon me, and ye
01:05:37shall go and pray
01:05:38unto me, and I will
01:05:38hearken unto you, and
01:05:39ye shall seek me, and
01:05:41find me, when ye
01:05:42shall search for me
01:05:43with all your heart.
01:05:45Jeremiah 29, verses
01:05:4612 and 13.
01:05:48Gilbert says,
01:05:49Daniel therefore
01:05:49sought the Lord by
01:05:50prayer and supplications
01:05:52and fasting and
01:05:54sackcloth and ashes.
01:05:57End quote.
01:05:58And so, you know, it's
01:06:02been the prophet's
01:06:02duty to call the
01:06:03attention of the
01:06:04people to their
01:06:06neglect of the
01:06:07divine precepts.
01:06:08That's what ministers
01:06:09are to do as well.
01:06:10Pastors.
01:06:11And even all
01:06:12believers were to do
01:06:13this.
01:06:14That's what love
01:06:14does.
01:06:17As well as to give
01:06:18direction in present
01:06:19emergencies.
01:06:20But the guidance
01:06:21thus graciously
01:06:22bestowed had been
01:06:23almost totally
01:06:24ignored, and Daniel
01:06:25knew that the
01:06:26people's sin was
01:06:27not due to
01:06:28ignorance.
01:06:29It was due to
01:06:30willful disobedience.
01:06:33It was rebellion.
01:06:36The contrast
01:06:37between God and
01:06:38his professed
01:06:39people, well, it's
01:06:41stark, isn't it?
01:06:43He's faithful.
01:06:44They've been
01:06:44unfaithful.
01:06:45The Jewish nation
01:06:46had sinned, not
01:06:48following God's
01:06:48precepts and laws,
01:06:49or listening to the
01:06:50voices of the
01:06:51prophets.
01:06:52The fact that
01:06:53Daniel approached
01:06:53God in prayer with
01:06:54fasting and sackcloth,
01:06:56and ashes shows
01:06:57how seriously
01:06:58believed the
01:06:59Jewish nation
01:07:00had departed
01:07:00from God.
01:07:03Huge indicator
01:07:04how sinful
01:07:05Israel had been.
01:07:08Now, the act of
01:07:09wearing sackcloth and
01:07:10ashes, some people
01:07:11have asked me about,
01:07:12that was a powerful
01:07:13outward symbol of
01:07:14deep inward emotions
01:07:16such as mourning
01:07:17or repentance
01:07:18or humility
01:07:19and distress
01:07:20before God in the
01:07:22community.
01:07:22sackcloth was
01:07:25kind of a, it was
01:07:25a coarse, rough
01:07:26fabric.
01:07:27It was typically
01:07:28made from black
01:07:30goat's hair.
01:07:33It was uncomfortable
01:07:33to wear, just
01:07:34imagine.
01:07:36It signified grief,
01:07:38abasement, or a
01:07:39state of deep
01:07:40sorrow.
01:07:42Ashes were taken
01:07:43from a hearth or
01:07:44fire pit, placed on
01:07:46the head or body.
01:07:47That represented
01:07:48desolation, ruin,
01:07:50the human condition
01:07:51of being created
01:07:52from dust and
01:07:52destined to return
01:07:54to dust.
01:07:57The combined
01:07:58practice was used
01:08:00to publicly
01:08:00declare a
01:08:02person's or a
01:08:03nation's contrition
01:08:04for sin.
01:08:06As seen, for
01:08:06example, in the
01:08:07responses of the
01:08:09people of Nineveh
01:08:10to Jonah's
01:08:11warning, you
01:08:11read about there.
01:08:13Sackcloth and
01:08:14ashes.
01:08:15The mourning of
01:08:16Mordecai and the
01:08:17Jews over Haman's
01:08:18decree.
01:08:20And of course,
01:08:20here in Daniel's
01:08:21prayer of repentance
01:08:21for Israel.
01:08:23You can see it
01:08:23scattered throughout
01:08:24the Old Testament.
01:08:27It was not the
01:08:27physical act itself
01:08:28that moved God
01:08:29though, was it?
01:08:30But the genuine
01:08:31humility and
01:08:32repentant heart
01:08:33that it represented.
01:08:36That's what God
01:08:38saw.
01:08:40The act of wearing
01:08:40sackcloth and
01:08:41ashes.
01:08:42It was a common
01:08:42practice during
01:08:43fasting, actually,
01:08:45including the fast on
01:08:46the Day of Atonement,
01:08:46by the way.
01:08:48Although this prayer
01:08:49didn't necessarily
01:08:50occur on the
01:08:50literal Day of
01:08:51Atonement that
01:08:51year, it had many
01:08:53characteristics of a
01:08:54Day of Atonement
01:08:54prayer, basically
01:08:56because of its tone
01:08:57of repentance for
01:08:58sin.
01:08:59Furthermore, Daniel
01:09:02interceded on behalf
01:09:03of his nation, like
01:09:03the high priest would
01:09:04intercede for the
01:09:05Jewish nation for
01:09:07their sins on that
01:09:07day.
01:09:08A lot of
01:09:09similarities.
01:09:10A lot of
01:09:10similarities.
01:09:11You know, Seventh-day
01:09:14Adventists are in the
01:09:15same danger as was
01:09:17the literal Jewish
01:09:18nation of departing
01:09:19from the precepts of
01:09:20God, breaking the
01:09:21commandments, ignoring
01:09:23the messages of the
01:09:24prophet he sent to
01:09:26us.
01:09:28Idolatry has taken
01:09:29new forms in the
01:09:30church, friends.
01:09:31It is common for
01:09:32people to scoff at
01:09:34Ellen White or make
01:09:35her words of none
01:09:36effect.
01:09:39Yet faithful people
01:09:40like Daniel still
01:09:41seek God with prayer
01:09:42and supplication,
01:09:44confessing the sins
01:09:45of the church and
01:09:47asking him for his
01:09:48mercy.
01:09:49We would do well to
01:09:50learn from his
01:09:50prayer.
01:09:51Never forget Isaiah
01:09:5258 and verse 1.
01:09:54I'll close with this.
01:09:56It's from an article
01:09:57out of the Review and
01:09:58Herald, April 29,
01:09:591909.
01:10:04Quote, Oh, how
01:10:05solemn and important
01:10:06is the work entrusted
01:10:07to us.
01:10:09How far-reaching
01:10:10this work is in its
01:10:13results.
01:10:14How are we to obtain
01:10:16strength and wisdom
01:10:19necessary for its
01:10:20successful accomplishment?
01:10:24As Daniel sought the
01:10:26Lord, so we are to
01:10:27seek Him.
01:10:29Daniel declares,
01:10:30brothers, I set my face
01:10:32unto the Lord God to
01:10:33seek by prayer and
01:10:34supplications with
01:10:35fasting and sackcloth
01:10:37and ashes.
01:10:39We are to seek the
01:10:41Lord in humility and
01:10:42contrition, confessing
01:10:44our own sins and coming
01:10:46into close unity with
01:10:47one another.
01:10:49Brethren and sisters,
01:10:51pray.
01:10:53Pray for your own
01:10:54sakes and for the sake
01:10:56of others.
01:10:57Let's do that right
01:10:59now.
01:11:00Let's bow our heads.
01:11:01Father in heaven, we do
01:11:01pray.
01:11:02We come to Thee seeking
01:11:05forgiveness for our
01:11:06sins, forgiveness for the
01:11:08sins of Your people
01:11:10throughout the world.
01:11:13Our lackness,
01:11:15our rebellion,
01:11:18our disobedience and not
01:11:21keeping Your commandments.
01:11:22I pray that the blood of
01:11:25Jesus covers us all.
01:11:28And I ask humbly, Lord,
01:11:30the best way I know how,
01:11:32to give us the strength
01:11:33to stand.
01:11:36Cover us with the robe
01:11:38of righteousness we need
01:11:39and help us to reach
01:11:41souls that we may be
01:11:44found worthy.
01:11:46Please be with those who
01:11:48are learning these things
01:11:48maybe for the first time.
01:11:50Send the Holy Spirit
01:11:52and angels that
01:11:53excel in strength.
01:11:54The devil doesn't want
01:11:55them to know any of it.
01:11:58Hold back the dark
01:12:00and the evil that they
01:12:01may have a right
01:12:02understanding of these
01:12:03truths.
01:12:06That they too may join
01:12:07the family of God.
01:12:08And we will meet one
01:12:09day in fellowship and
01:12:10be in unity.
01:12:12That's my prayer for
01:12:14today.
01:12:15And I ask it in Jesus'
01:12:16name, for He is
01:12:18worthy.
01:12:19We are not.
01:12:20He is worthy.
