00:00:00Hello friends, I'm Pastor Joel Aswell. It's good to be with you here at this time.

00:00:04Get into our Biblical study here in the book of Daniel.

00:00:09We've been looking at the history of Israel. We're going to continue that a bit because it all lines up

00:00:14and you'll see these puzzle pieces come together.

00:00:17There is a reason that we're looking at the history of Israel.

00:00:25Because when we get in here to verses 24 to 27, we'll see it played out exactly as God has

00:00:31said.

00:00:32It's remarkable to find that God keeps His Word and that all these things come together.

00:00:43It's just astonishing. We praise His name.

00:00:46But before we get into our study, we want to ask the Lord to bless us.

00:00:49So I invite you to kneel if possible.

00:00:52Prayer is not posture.

00:00:53But if we can kneel in reverent awe, all that's wholly acceptable and brings glory to God, showing this reverence.

00:01:01But if you can't kneel, let's bow our hearts and our heads together and come before our Maker.

00:01:07Father in Heaven, we thank You so much for the opportunity we have to open Your Holy Word that You

00:01:12preserved for us.

00:01:15Who live here at the end of time. The time of the end.

00:01:19And so, Father, I pray, as I praise Your name here, that You send us the Holy Spirit as we

00:01:26read these things out of Your Word.

00:01:28That the truth will be planted within our minds and hearts.

00:01:32That a change will take place.

00:01:35And that a love for this truth will be developed within us and that we will share it with all

00:01:39around.

00:01:40May the love of Jesus reign in our hearts and people around us see this love of Jesus alive in

00:01:47us.

00:01:48Father, I praise Your name today.

00:01:50I praise You for sending Jesus to come.

00:01:53This is a season that we celebrate that.

00:01:56That Jesus came and became a human being like us to show us how to live a righteous life.

00:02:01To become a citizen of Heaven.

00:02:04And what that takes.

00:02:06And He showed us Your true character.

00:02:08I praise Him for that.

00:02:11And opened up the deceptions of Satan to the whole world that he may be seen for who and what

00:02:17he is.

00:02:18A murderer and a father of lies.

00:02:21The father of sin.

00:02:23And so, Father, I thank You for that.

00:02:25I pray for the Holy Spirit to come into our hearts and guide us through Your Word.

00:02:30And I pray that You will forgive us our sins.

00:02:32We claim the blood of Jesus that He shed there for our sins.

00:02:36And I praise Your name that He was resurrected from the dead.

00:02:41Because there was no taint of sin within Him.

00:02:44And now He's our minister in Heaven.

00:02:46Our great High Priest.

00:02:48I pray that we help Him in overcoming sin and cleansing of the sanctuary.

00:02:51Which we're studying here in the book of Daniel.

00:02:55Please, Lord, give me the words to speak.

00:02:59Help me to have a strong voice.

00:03:01You know, the issues that we've had with that.

00:03:04That hearts may be ready to hear these truths.

00:03:07And that they hear them.

00:03:10And act upon them.

00:03:12And be upon that sea of glass one day soon when Jesus comes.

00:03:15I pray these things in His blessed name.

00:03:17For He's so worthy.

00:03:18Amen.

00:03:21And amen.

00:03:23Well, we are in the time of the end series.

00:03:26This is episode 5 of the series that I've entitled The Annihilator.

00:03:33The Annihilator.

00:03:35This is message 24, but it's episode 5.

00:03:40And in our last couple of studies, maybe if you recall.

00:03:47We looked at the history of Israel to answer questions concerning that time prophecy of Daniel 9 and verse 24.

00:03:54Let's read that again just to refresh our memories a bit.

00:04:00Daniel 9 and verse 24.

00:04:05Seventy weeks are determined.

00:04:07And we're going to break all this down like we have from chapter 1 all the way to here.

00:04:14So, don't worry about it.

00:04:15I'm not skipping anything.

00:04:18Just kind of laying some groundwork here.

00:04:21Which will really aid us.

00:04:22And I know that you'll see that as we go on.

00:04:25Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon the holy city.

00:04:30To finish the transgression.

00:04:32To make an end of sins.

00:04:34And to make reconciliation for iniquity.

00:04:36And to bring in everlasting righteousness.

00:04:39And to seal up the vision and the prophecy.

00:04:42And to anoint the most holy.

00:04:45And so, there's a lot encapsulated in verse 24.

00:04:49We will break it down as we go on in this series.

00:04:53But in summary, as we were studying these things,

00:04:56we found that God gave Israel another 70 weeks.

00:05:01It says right there, 70 weeks.

00:05:04Are determined upon thy people.

00:05:06And we know that a day for a year in prophecy.

00:05:11Apocalyptic prophecy.

00:05:13Seventy weeks is 490 literal years.

00:05:17And so, God gave Israel another 70 weeks.

00:05:20In order to become the nation of priests that he desired.

00:05:24Who would then accept the Messiah when he came.

00:05:28Right?

00:05:29Notice this.

00:05:30I will share this.

00:05:30It's from Manuscript Releases, Volume 10, page 384.

00:05:34Just a quick quote.

00:05:35It says, quote,

00:05:35The children of Israel were instructed in the word of God that they might prepare for the advent of Christ.

00:05:44That's what it was all about.

00:05:47The sanctuary services and all this pointed forward to the coming of the Deliverer, the Messiah.

00:05:52And so, they studied the word of God to prepare for that coming of Jesus.

00:05:58And we know that Revelation 7 speaks about the spiritual nation of priests that accept Jesus at his second coming.

00:06:08We also learned that humanity had not reached the lowest depth of their sinful degradation with Adam's firstborn son.

00:06:17It would take 4,000 years before the true character of Satan and sin could be shown.

00:06:23Right?

00:06:24And the Deliverer then could come.

00:06:26Save mankind from the lowest depth of sin.

00:06:29And justify God before unfallen angels and worlds.

00:06:32We learned that.

00:06:33Jesus left the earthly Jewish temple.

00:06:38He left the temple desolate.

00:06:41And why did he do that?

00:06:43Well, we learned it was due to them rejecting him as the Christ.

00:06:48And it remains desolate to this day.

00:06:52Now, why will the literal Jewish temple forever be desolate?

00:06:56That's a good question.

00:06:58And answering this will help our understanding of the books of Daniel and Revelation.

00:07:04The timeline of Daniel 9 and verse 24 takes us from Daniel's time to the coming of the Messiah.

00:07:10It also takes us to the death and resurrection of the Messiah.

00:07:14To Pentecost and onward into the New Testament Scriptures.

00:07:18490 years later.

00:07:19That's what this timeline does.

00:07:21And you're going to be amazed by it as we lay it out.

00:07:26Now, after the day of Pentecost,

00:07:29when we get into this study here,

00:07:32we're going to take a look at the life of Paul and the conversion of Paul.

00:07:36And it's going to be an interesting lesson to us, again, on the history of Israel.

00:07:42We'll see a lot of parallels.

00:07:44You remember when we started these studies in prophecy,

00:07:47I said there are parallels that we need to keep our eye open to.

00:07:51See if we can catch some of these parallels in God's Word.

00:07:56And we're going to see a parallel in the life of Paul here as we get into it.

00:08:00But after the day of Pentecost,

00:08:04we know that multitudes left Judaism and joined the Christian church.

00:08:09Let's go to Acts 6 and verse 7.

00:08:12Notice what it says.

00:08:14It says,

00:08:15And the word of God increased,

00:08:17and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly.

00:08:22Notice it started in Jerusalem.

00:08:24And a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

00:08:31Really?

00:08:33It is significant

00:08:35that a great many priests became followers of Christ.

00:08:39Now, we do know that Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea

00:08:44were already followers of Jesus.

00:08:46And they helped to fund the early Christian church.

00:08:51And as far as it's known,

00:08:53none of Christ's immediate followers was a priest.

00:08:56And no priest is named after,

00:08:58named among the early converts after Pentecost.

00:09:02I haven't come across it.

00:09:04I don't know that you can find one.

00:09:07But under the power of the Holy Spirit,

00:09:09such preaching by the apostles

00:09:11drew a great company of them to Christ.

00:09:16Now, the deacon,

00:09:21named Stephen,

00:09:22are you familiar with him?

00:09:24He was one of the instruments of this phenomenal growth

00:09:27in the following of Jesus.

00:09:29Let's go to Acts 6 and verse 8.

00:09:35We'll go to the next verse.

00:09:37And Stephen,

00:09:38full of,

00:09:39notice how he's described here,

00:09:41full of faith and power.

00:09:43Isn't that interesting?

00:09:44Full of faith.

00:09:46Well, you'd expect him to be full of faith.

00:09:47He's a deacon, right?

00:09:49But this says full of power.

00:09:51And then,

00:09:52goes on and says,

00:09:53did great wonders and miracles

00:09:58among the people.

00:10:01Now,

00:10:03the faith was not only the divine attribute,

00:10:05but the grace and beauty of spirit

00:10:08with which he presented the gospel message.

00:10:12And that would be expected,

00:10:13like I said, right?

00:10:15As a deacon,

00:10:16and a follower of Jesus Christ.

00:10:19But the power is very interesting to me.

00:10:22The power was that of working miracles.

00:10:25It appears that Stephen had a full possession

00:10:30of the gifts of the spirit

00:10:31as had the 12 apostles.

00:10:33And these miracles demonstrated

00:10:35the power with which Stephen was filled.

00:10:40Now, during this time,

00:10:42we see a man named Saul

00:10:43come upon the scene, right?

00:10:44And this testimony of Saul

00:10:46is a great example

00:10:47of the condition of literal Israel.

00:10:50Saul of Tarsus,

00:10:52I mean, he was no featherweight.

00:10:54He was an intellectual giant, actually,

00:10:57and a promising prospect

00:10:58with a brilliant future in Judaism.

00:11:02He was young.

00:11:03He was energetic.

00:11:04He was relentless.

00:11:09In a sense,

00:11:10he had tunnel vision, didn't he?

00:11:11In his mind,

00:11:13God had chosen the Jewish nation

00:11:15irrevocably and unconditionally.

00:11:18And woe to those who thought otherwise.

00:11:22You know, for Saul,

00:11:24the preservation of the religion of Judaism

00:11:26was the top priority.

00:11:28His entire religion was Jewish-centered.

00:11:32In his own words,

00:11:34in Acts 22 and verse 3,

00:11:36notice what he says.

00:11:37He says,

00:11:38I am verily a man,

00:11:39which am a Jew,

00:11:41born in Tarsus,

00:11:43a city in Cilicia,

00:11:45yet brought up in this city

00:11:46at the feet of Gamaliel,

00:11:48and taught according to

00:11:50the perfect manner

00:11:51of the law of the fathers,

00:11:53and was zealous toward God,

00:11:55as ye all are this day.

00:11:58Saul was recruited

00:12:00by the Jewish leaders

00:12:01and persecuted the church

00:12:02for the same reason

00:12:03that the religious leaders

00:12:04persecuted Christ.

00:12:06He feared that Christianity would grow

00:12:09and the Romans would take away

00:12:10his nation.

00:12:11You see.

00:12:14Let's look at John 11,

00:12:16verses 47 and onward.

00:12:19Notice, it says,

00:12:20Then gathered the chief priests

00:12:22and the Pharisees a council

00:12:23and said,

00:12:24What do we do?

00:12:25I'm talking about Jesus, right?

00:12:27For this man doeth many miracles.

00:12:29If we let him thus alone,

00:12:31all men will believe on him.

00:12:32And the Romans shall come

00:12:34and take away both our place

00:12:36and nation.

00:12:36This was their fear,

00:12:38you see.

00:12:41And one of them,

00:12:42named Caiaphas,

00:12:42being the high priest

00:12:43that same year,

00:12:44said unto them,

00:12:45You know nothing at all.

00:12:47Nor consider that it is expedient

00:12:49for us that one man should die

00:12:51for the people,

00:12:53and that the whole nation

00:12:54perish not.

00:12:56Right?

00:12:58The implication of Caiaphas' argument

00:13:01was that even if Jesus was innocent,

00:13:04it would be to Israel's well-being

00:13:07to have him removed.

00:13:09And so, like his tutors,

00:13:12Saul became a persecutor of the church.

00:13:15Let's go to Acts chapter 26,

00:13:17and we'll begin with verse 9.

00:13:21Acts 26, verse 9.

00:13:23I verily thought with myself

00:13:25that I ought to do many things

00:13:27contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth,

00:13:30which thing I also did in Jerusalem.

00:13:32And many of the saints

00:13:33did I shut up in prison.

00:13:35This is Paul talking.

00:13:36Saul at the time,

00:13:38doing these things.

00:13:40Having received authority

00:13:41from the chief priests,

00:13:42and when they were put to death,

00:13:44I gave my voice against them.

00:13:46And I punished them

00:13:49oft in every synagogue,

00:13:50and compelled them to blaspheme.

00:13:54And being exceedingly mad against them,

00:13:56I persecuted them,

00:13:58even unto strange cities, he says.

00:14:02He traveled all around

00:14:04to persecute God's faithful people, right?

00:14:07But, see, it was inevitable then,

00:14:10don't you think,

00:14:12that Saul would one day

00:14:14come across Stephen

00:14:15in his persecution

00:14:16of the Christian church.

00:14:20Saul was present

00:14:21at Stephen's death.

00:14:23And this was a watershed event

00:14:25in his life.

00:14:27Let's go to Acts chapter 7.

00:14:29Go back some.

00:14:30Look at verse 57.

00:14:32Then they cried out

00:14:32with a loud voice

00:14:33and stopped their ears.

00:14:34This is after Stephen

00:14:35had given his testimony.

00:14:37And they ran upon him

00:14:38with one accord

00:14:39and cast him out of the city

00:14:41and stoned him.

00:14:42And the witnesses

00:14:44laid down their clothes

00:14:45at a young man's feet

00:14:46whose name was Saul.

00:14:50You'll find that Saul

00:14:52was not only present

00:14:53at Stephen's death,

00:14:55but he was also

00:14:57the mastermind behind it.

00:15:01Acts chapter 22 and verse 20.

00:15:04And when the blood

00:15:06of thy martyr Stephen was shed,

00:15:08I also was standing by

00:15:10and consenting unto his death,

00:15:12that's important,

00:15:13and kept the raiment

00:15:15of them that slew him.

00:15:16You see,

00:15:17Paul was so pleased

00:15:19by their action

00:15:20that he looked after

00:15:22their clothing

00:15:23while they murdered Stephen.

00:15:25But in order to quiet

00:15:27his conscience

00:15:27over Stephen's death,

00:15:28Saul went on

00:15:29an expedition

00:15:30to destroy

00:15:32the followers of Jesus

00:15:34and save the Jewish nation

00:15:36from ruin.

00:15:37He thought he was going

00:15:37to be the great hero,

00:15:38see?

00:15:40The trip was a long one

00:15:41as he would have gone

00:15:44to northern Israel

00:15:45across Lebanon

00:15:46and into Syria.

00:15:47Let's go to Acts 9,

00:15:49verses 1 and 2.

00:15:51It says,

00:15:52And Saul,

00:15:52yet breathing out

00:15:53threatenings and slaughter

00:15:54against the disciples

00:15:55of the Lord,

00:15:56went unto the high priest

00:15:58and desired of him

00:15:59letters to Damascus,

00:16:00to the synagogues,

00:16:02that if he found

00:16:03any of this way,

00:16:05you know,

00:16:05that's what they called

00:16:06the followers of Jesus,

00:16:08they were called

00:16:09the way.

00:16:11It says there,

00:16:13If he found

00:16:13any of this way,

00:16:16whether they were

00:16:17men or women,

00:16:18he might bring them

00:16:19bound unto Jerusalem.

00:16:24Now,

00:16:24the persecutor's zeal

00:16:25we see

00:16:26has intensified.

00:16:28He's willing to go

00:16:29to extreme limits

00:16:30to stamp out

00:16:31the hated teachings,

00:16:32see?

00:16:33The names of the victims

00:16:35of this continued persecution,

00:16:37well,

00:16:38they're not given,

00:16:39but Paul's later confession

00:16:41indicates that Stephen

00:16:42was not the only one

00:16:44killed at this time.

00:16:46The zeal that Saul showed

00:16:48at the time of Stephen's death

00:16:49led to his election

00:16:50to the Sanhedrin,

00:16:52you see?

00:16:53He was moving up

00:16:55and he was soon armed

00:16:57with authority

00:16:57from the chief priests

00:16:58to hunt down Christians

00:16:59in Jerusalem.

00:17:02Now,

00:17:03the letters

00:17:03that he received

00:17:04were the papers

00:17:05that constituted

00:17:06Saul's authority

00:17:07and commission

00:17:08to do these things.

00:17:10And it appears

00:17:11that Rome

00:17:11cooperated

00:17:12with the Jewish authorities

00:17:13by giving the high priest

00:17:14powers of extradition

00:17:16over fugitive Jews.

00:17:19They couldn't do anything

00:17:20without Rome's permission,

00:17:21you see.

00:17:23Saul couldn't have gone out

00:17:24and grabbed all these Jews,

00:17:26some of them

00:17:27may have been

00:17:27Roman citizens even,

00:17:29and hauled them

00:17:30away to Jerusalem.

00:17:32They had to have

00:17:33the authority

00:17:34from Rome

00:17:35to do that.

00:17:37But it is estimated

00:17:38that there may have been

00:17:4030 or 40 synagogues

00:17:41in the city of Damascus

00:17:42at this time.

00:17:44So undoubtedly,

00:17:46Christians were still

00:17:47devoutly attending

00:17:48the synagogues

00:17:49and it was against them

00:17:50that Saul planned

00:17:51to proceed.

00:17:52And as he approached

00:17:54Damascus

00:17:55from the southwest,

00:17:58he had an experience

00:17:59that was to change his life

00:18:01and his theology

00:18:01forever,

00:18:02didn't he?

00:18:03He had an encounter

00:18:05with Jesus,

00:18:07a direct encounter

00:18:08with Jesus.

00:18:10Saul discovered

00:18:11that by persecuting

00:18:12the body of Christ,

00:18:13he was actually

00:18:14persecuting Christ

00:18:15because Christ

00:18:16is the head

00:18:17and the church

00:18:18is his body.

00:18:20And so we find

00:18:21that he had been

00:18:22kicking against

00:18:22the pricks

00:18:23of his conscience

00:18:24from the time

00:18:25that Stephen

00:18:26had been stoned.

00:18:28You see,

00:18:29he knew deep

00:18:29in his heart

00:18:30that Stephen

00:18:31was in the right

00:18:32and he was in the wrong.

00:18:34He knew that.

00:18:35But he was trying

00:18:35to quell that conscience.

00:18:38You see,

00:18:40maybe if I destroy

00:18:41them all,

00:18:42I'll have some peace.

00:18:44Right?

00:18:45Let's go back

00:18:45to Acts chapter 9.

00:18:47Let's look at

00:18:48verse 3.

00:18:49And as he journeyed,

00:18:50he came near Damascus

00:18:51and suddenly there

00:18:52shined round about him

00:18:53a light from heaven.

00:18:54And he fell to the earth

00:18:56and heard a voice

00:18:57saying unto him,

00:18:58Saul,

00:18:59why persecutest thou me?

00:19:01And he said,

00:19:02and Paul said,

00:19:03and Saul said,

00:19:03Who art thou, Lord?

00:19:05And the Lord said,

00:19:06I am Jesus

00:19:07whom thou persecutest.

00:19:08It is hard for thee

00:19:10to kick against the pricks.

00:19:13And he trembling

00:19:14and astonished said,

00:19:15Lord,

00:19:16what wilt thou

00:19:16have me to do?

00:19:18And the Lord said unto him,

00:19:20Arise and go into the city

00:19:21and it shall be told thee

00:19:22what thou must do.

00:19:25Kicking against the pricks

00:19:26was the Holy Spirit

00:19:28trying to make inroads

00:19:29into his heart

00:19:30and convict him

00:19:31of the wrongs

00:19:33he was doing.

00:19:34Paul was fighting that,

00:19:37wasn't he?

00:19:38Now,

00:19:39the sight of Saul's

00:19:40meeting Christ

00:19:41is unknown.

00:19:42There are conflicting

00:19:44and unfounded traditions

00:19:45that point out

00:19:46four different places

00:19:47actually.

00:19:48But it must have been

00:19:49relatively close

00:19:49to the city

00:19:50because we're told

00:19:52in verse 8

00:19:53that his companions

00:19:54led him by the hand

00:19:56and brought him

00:19:57into Damascus.

00:19:59So it had to be

00:20:00relatively close.

00:20:02Notice this,

00:20:02a statement from the book

00:20:04Acts of the Apostles,

00:20:07page 117.

00:20:09Quote,

00:20:10On the morning

00:20:11of that eventful day,

00:20:12Saul had neared Damascus

00:20:14with feelings

00:20:15of self-satisfaction

00:20:17because of the confidence

00:20:18that had been placed

00:20:20in him by the chief priest.

00:20:22To him had been entrusted

00:20:24grave responsibilities.

00:20:26He was commissioned

00:20:27to further the interests

00:20:28of the Jewish religion

00:20:30by checking,

00:20:31if possible,

00:20:33the spread of the new faith.

00:20:37the spread of the new faith

00:20:38in Damascus.

00:20:39He had determined

00:20:40that his mission

00:20:41should be crowned

00:20:42with success

00:20:43and had looked forward

00:20:44with eager anticipation

00:20:46to the experiences

00:20:47that he expected

00:20:49were before him.

00:20:50But how unlike

00:20:52his anticipations

00:20:53was his entrance

00:20:54into the city.

00:20:55Isn't that right?

00:20:59Yeah, it didn't turn out

00:21:00the way that he thought

00:21:02it was going to turn out,

00:21:03did it?

00:21:08She says,

00:21:09stricken

00:21:11with blindness,

00:21:13helpless,

00:21:13tortured by remorse,

00:21:16knowing not

00:21:17what further judgment

00:21:18might be in store

00:21:20for him,

00:21:21can you imagine?

00:21:22He sought out

00:21:24the home

00:21:24of the disciple Judas,

00:21:26where in solitude

00:21:27he had ample opportunity

00:21:28for reflection

00:21:29and prayer.

00:21:32Yeah, I imagine

00:21:33a lot of reflection

00:21:35and prayer.

00:21:36Don't you think?

00:21:39His whole theology

00:21:41had been kind of

00:21:41turned upside down

00:21:42a bit, right?

00:21:44And the guilt

00:21:46that he was experiencing.

00:21:49But at the house

00:21:51of Ananias,

00:21:52Saul was baptized

00:21:52into Christ

00:21:53and he received

00:21:54the Holy Spirit.

00:21:56Acts 9, verse 15.

00:21:58But the Lord

00:21:59said unto him,

00:22:00that's Ananias,

00:22:01Go thy way

00:22:03to the house

00:22:04of Judas,

00:22:05for he is a chosen

00:22:07vessel unto me.

00:22:07He's talking about Saul.

00:22:08to bear my name

00:22:09before the Gentiles

00:22:11and kings

00:22:12and the children

00:22:13of Israel,

00:22:14for I will show him

00:22:15how great things

00:22:16he must suffer

00:22:17for my name's sake.

00:22:18And Ananias went

00:22:20his way

00:22:21and entered

00:22:21into the house

00:22:22and putting his hands

00:22:22on him,

00:22:24Saul,

00:22:25said,

00:22:25Brother Saul,

00:22:26the Lord,

00:22:26even Jesus,

00:22:28that appeared unto thee

00:22:29in the way,

00:22:30as thou camest,

00:22:31hath sent me

00:22:32that thou mightest

00:22:33receive thy sight

00:22:36and be filled

00:22:37with the Holy Ghost.

00:22:39And immediately,

00:22:42that's the way it is

00:22:43when Jesus has,

00:22:45says, speaks,

00:22:47things happen, right?

00:22:48God's word is fulfilled.

00:22:50He sends Ananias,

00:22:52as soon as Ananias

00:22:53says this,

00:22:54and as soon as

00:22:58there's that conversion

00:22:59process there,

00:23:02immediately,

00:23:03we're told,

00:23:04there fell from his eyes

00:23:05as it had been scales

00:23:06and he received sight

00:23:07forwith and arose

00:23:08and was baptized.

00:23:13Now,

00:23:14this must have been

00:23:15a startling revelation

00:23:16to Ananias,

00:23:17who as a devout Jew

00:23:18had not yet realized

00:23:19that the whole world

00:23:21was to hear of Christ.

00:23:23But he now sees

00:23:24in the man of whom

00:23:26he had only heard

00:23:27as the great persecutor,

00:23:29one who has been

00:23:31chosen and trained
