Of all the roster decisions still ahead for the Miami Dolphins before training camp, CBS Sports claims wide receiver is still the biggest question mark in Miami.
Transcript
00:00So CBS Sports did a story.
00:04We were talking NFL today because there were a couple pieces of NFL news,
00:08and we just talked in the last segment.
00:09Reuben Bain's going to wear number three in Tampa.
00:12Skylar Thompson is being signed to Baltimore,
00:16which will give them five quarterbacks.
00:18You still rooting for him, Solana, or you're done with him?
00:21Oh, that bum?
00:22No, I'm done with him, man.
00:24That was your guy for the longest.
00:27What was the other news that was NFL?
00:29Let me just check Schefter.
00:30Oh, Tyrod Taylor is going to be the new backup in Green Bay,
00:35so he will take Malik Willis' place.
00:37And then for the Dolphins, he had mentioned the headlines,
00:40Tabor Pepper, among others, released by the Dolphins today.
00:44So we were talking some NFL.
00:45CBS Sports did a story,
00:49and it's one lingering question for each NFL team.
00:56And so I was just looking at the AFC East teams.
00:59So here's your, according to CBSSports.com,
01:04here's your lingering question for the Miami Dolphins.
01:08Will Miami add another wide receiver?
01:12And what they write is,
01:13the Dolphins purged their wide receiver room this offseason,
01:16releasing Tyreek Hill and then trading Jalen Waddell to the Denver Broncos.
01:20Now the cupboard is pretty bare with Malik Washington
01:23as the notable holdover from last year.
01:25The club did add veterans Tutu Atwell and Jalen Tolbert
01:29and drafted Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell in the third round,
01:33but none really moved the needle too much.
01:35As the club heads into 2026 with a new head coach in Jeff Halfley
01:40and a new quarterback in Malik Willis,
01:43is it wise to bring in another veteran to help raise the floor of the unit?
01:50There are plenty of receivers still on the market,
01:53ranging from Stephon Diggs to Debo Samuel to Juwan Jennings.
02:00So CBS Sports says,
02:01hey, here's the lingering question for the Dolphins.
02:04Just to give you a context,
02:06their lingering question for the Patriots,
02:08just the AFC East teams,
02:10will Mike Brable,
02:11will the scandal continue to linger?
02:14For the Jets,
02:15will Aaron Glenn make it out of 2026?
02:20And for Buffalo,
02:21can Keon Coleman save his career?
02:23Which, by the way,
02:25shows you that Buffalo has no problems.
02:28When that's the lingering question,
02:30Yeah.
02:31Then they just have no problems.
02:33They're stacked.
02:34Okay.
02:35Everything's going well.
02:36It's a championship game if Keon Coleman comes around.
02:38Does Miami need to add a wide receiver,
02:44a veteran wide receiver,
02:46to have the presence
02:47and to give Malik Willis some weaponry?
02:51No.
02:52Use the young guys.
02:53Would be my opinion.
02:55Like,
02:56Juwan Jennings,
02:57maybe,
02:58but
02:58Stephon Diggs is bringing drama to someplace.
03:02he can't bring in Diggs.
03:03Yeah,
03:03it's just too much,
03:04just drama to a place that goes.
03:07But even that,
03:08like,
03:08we've talked about moving a bar,
03:10moving a line.
03:11Quarterbacks move a line
03:13one game a year,
03:15two games a year.
03:16Like,
03:17what is Stephon Diggs going to do for this team?
03:18Make us go
03:19six and 11 and not five and 12?
03:22I think,
03:22but does it give Malik Willis
03:24an opportunity to shine more?
03:26I mean,
03:27Malik Willis,
03:28if he's only got
03:30Tutu Atwell
03:31and Malik Washington
03:33and Chris Bell,
03:34I mean,
03:35you're talking about,
03:36you're really talking about
03:39a dearth
03:40of wide receiver,
03:41like,
03:42top tier wide receiver targets.
03:44So you're making it more difficult
03:46on your new quarterback
03:47immediately,
03:48from the jump.
03:49Yeah,
03:49for his evaluation
03:50to see if,
03:51you know,
03:51this two year,
03:52what is it up then?
03:53Two year 40,
03:54whatever it is,
03:55to see if he can be the future
03:56of the team,
03:59you have to take that
04:00into context
04:00that he does have young receivers
04:02and unproven receivers,
04:03but I don't know if you,
04:05honestly,
04:05to have the money
04:06to bring in those guys,
04:07but also,
04:08is that the direction
04:09you want to go?
04:09Because when you were saying it,
04:11the cupboard's bare,
04:12the cupboard had a,
04:14a Chan,
04:15an A-Ron Brewer,
04:17and a Jordan Brooks in it.
04:19The rest of the cupboard
04:20was bare.
04:21Well,
04:22they didn't have talent
04:22at the wide receiver position,
04:24and again,
04:24Tyreek got hurt,
04:25but they got rid of Tyreek,
04:27they got rid of Jalen Waddle.
04:28Those are premier wide receivers.
04:30I'm talking about
04:31this offseason.
04:32If you look at
04:33just assets and liability
04:35type thing,
04:35we were talking about
04:36earlier in the show,
04:37you have to regroup,
04:39you have to rebuild everything.
04:40That's why they traded down
04:41to get fifth round picks.
04:42They have to re-go.
04:43Go see if these dudes can play.
04:45Bell,
04:46I know he's hurt,
04:46but see if Douglas can play.
04:48Like,
04:48don't put them back on the shelf.
04:50Put them out on the field
04:51to see if they can play.
04:53Get Stephon Diggs
04:54for one year,
04:55it's gonna give Malik Willis
04:57another 400 yards passing.
04:59Yeah.
05:00Is that really worth it
05:01to use that money,
05:02spend that money,
05:03and get the headache
05:04of a Stephon Diggs?
05:05I don't think so.
05:06I want us to be
05:08the youngest roster in the NFL.
05:09I think that's the best approach.
05:11But even then,
05:13Crowder,
05:13correct me if I'm wrong.
05:14I could be way off here,
05:15but isn't wide receiver
05:19typically the one position
05:20you don't mind
05:21being a little young in?
05:23Like,
05:24rookie wide receivers
05:25are more prone
05:27to be serviceable
05:29as rookies,
05:30than, say,
05:31a running back
05:32or than, say,
05:33an edge rusher
05:33or than, say,
05:35I don't know,
05:35a safety.
05:36Because, I don't know,
05:37like, at the end of the day,
05:38they have to learn
05:38how to run routes.
05:39And I'm not saying
05:40that you're fine
05:41with rookie wide receivers,
05:42but just because
05:43you have a bunch
05:44of young receivers
05:45doesn't mean Malik Willis
05:46can't have a productive season.
05:48If they're good,
05:50and that's the thing, too,
05:51if Douglas,
05:52Caleb Douglas,
05:54if he's good,
05:55third-round pick,
05:56if he can really play,
05:57he's going to get separation,
05:59and Malik Willis
06:00is going to have
06:00somebody to throw to.
06:01Malik Washington,
06:02we already believe in him.
06:03Tutu Atwell,
06:04never seen him play,
06:06don't even act like
06:06I know Tutu Atwell's game.
06:08But if he is a,
06:09if he can get separation
06:10from a DB,
06:11he'll get open,
06:12and Malik will deliver him
06:13the ball.
06:14But just,
06:15I guess,
06:16putting a cherry
06:17on top
06:18of a,
06:19of a cupcake
06:20with no frosting,
06:22what's the point
06:23of trying to find
06:23that veteran receiver
06:25to lead the room
06:25and all that,
06:27don't play ball.
06:28I think if you're Malik Willis
06:29or maybe the offensive coordinator,
06:31you're saying,
06:32no, no, no,
06:32it's not the cherry
06:33on top of the frosting.
06:35This is the frosting.
06:37I don't have frosting
06:38on my cupcake.
06:39Like,
06:40you know what I mean?
06:41Like,
06:41you're talking about
06:43being devoid
06:44of
06:46a starting receiver
06:47on any
06:48team in the NFL,
06:50right?
06:51None of those guys
06:52are going to be
06:53the number one receiver
06:54on any team
06:54in the NFL.
06:56No.
06:56And we don't,
06:57going into camp,
06:58who's the one?
07:00Nobody knows.
07:01I don't think the Dolphins,
07:02I don't think Happily
07:02or,
07:03or Sully know
07:05who they're starting.
07:05I called him Sully
07:06for you,
07:07Hawk.
07:07I didn't do JES.
07:08Appreciate it.
07:09Nobody,
07:10who's our one?
07:12When you go into camp
07:13trying to figure out
07:14your one,
07:14I'm telling you,
07:15you don't have a great
07:16receiving core,
07:16to your point.
07:17Well,
07:17Malik Washington.
07:18But it's got to be
07:19Malik Washington.
07:20I agree.
07:20But if,
07:21if you say,
07:23Diggs,
07:23or someone like him
07:24would add 400 yards,
07:26say,
07:27to Malik Willis's
07:28throwing totals,
07:30well,
07:30if I'm Malik Willis
07:31and I go,
07:32hey,
07:33I don't want to be
07:33stuck at 2,600,
07:34I'd like to eclipse
07:35the 3,000 yard mark.
07:37And if one of those guys
07:39are going to help me do it,
07:40then go sign him.
07:42Hawk,
07:43Malik Willis
07:44wants Randy Moss
07:45to come out of retirement.
07:47Not Randy Moss.
07:47Well,
07:48he does,
07:48yes.
07:48He would like Randy Moss.
07:49He wants the Marks brothers
07:51to see if they can still
07:52run 4-2s.
07:53Malik Willis
07:53wants all weapons.
07:55I'm seeing the
07:57approach
07:58and the strategy
07:59of this team.
08:00I think it's just
08:01going to be
08:01real young
08:03and let's see
08:04if these guys,
08:05if I give Caleb,
08:06Caleb Douglas
08:0880 targets,
08:09can he go get
08:1060 and 1,000?
08:12Can he get
08:1330 and 300?
08:14Like,
08:15what can he really do?
08:16It's an evaluation year
08:17just like Malik Willis
08:18is on evaluation year.
08:19But I do think
08:20there's an avenue
08:21for like a Tyler Lockett
08:23or,
08:24I don't know,
08:24an Alan Lazard
08:25with the Green Bay
08:26connections.
08:27I'm just looking at
08:28a couple like
08:29free agent wide receivers.
08:31Cedric Wilson,
08:32welcome back
08:33for like the
08:33eighth straight year.
08:35Like,
08:35I could see them
08:36going out,
08:37Crowder,
08:37when that post-June 1st
08:39money hits
08:39and bringing in
08:41at least one
08:43established target.
08:44Not somebody
08:45you're going to pay
08:45a lot of money to,
08:46just somebody
08:47you'll give a
08:47one-year contract,
08:48maybe two years,
08:49you get off of it
08:50in the second year.
08:51But the idea
08:51that Malik Washington
08:52is going to be
08:53wide receiver one
08:54and like Jalen Tolbert
08:56is going to be
08:57fighting for two,
08:59to me,
08:59is ridiculous.
09:00Like,
09:01you're setting up
09:01the guy you invested
09:02money in to fail
09:03to that article's point.
09:05Yeah.
09:06Well,
09:06A-Chan's going to get
09:07the ball 400 times a game.
09:08You got another
09:0920 plays.
09:10Is he?
09:11There's a risk
09:12in that too,
09:12though.
09:13There's a risk
09:14in that,
09:15especially if they're
09:16going to give him
09:16an extension,
09:17there is a risk
09:18in working him
09:20to death
09:21in the one season
09:22that you don't
09:23want to do so
09:24because you really
09:25want to have him
09:26ready for the season
09:26after that.
09:29That's the reason
09:29he wants to get
09:30paid too
09:30because I know
09:31this year
09:32you're going to
09:32try to make me
09:33the center of everything.
09:34Are we sure
09:35Devon A-Chan's
09:36going to be back
09:36next year?
09:37I'm not suggesting
09:38he isn't.
09:39I don't have any
09:40inside info,
09:41but like,
09:41you guys will find
09:42it a little bit odd
09:43that something
09:44hasn't been worked
09:44on yet?
09:45To me,
09:45they made it clear
09:46that they want
09:47to sign him
09:48long-term
09:48and that he's
09:49a key part
09:49of what they
09:50want to do.
09:50Which is why
09:52I'm just a little
09:53bit confused
09:53as to why
09:54this hasn't
09:55gotten done yet.
09:57They can push it
09:58off on that
09:59June 1st.
10:00They can push it
10:01off to the June
10:011st deadline
10:02where after that
10:03we'll know our
10:03money,
10:04A-Chan,
10:05but he didn't
10:05come to none of
10:06the little OTAs
10:06and all that stuff
10:07and I would
10:09advise him
10:10if I was his
10:10friend,
10:11don't go in
10:12that building
10:12until you have
10:13a big contract
10:14because you're
10:14worth it.
10:15If you walk
10:16in that building,
10:16they're going
10:16to hand you
10:17the ball.
10:18Just a visit.
10:19They're going
10:19to hand you
10:20the ball.
10:20You are going
10:20to have a
10:21running play
10:22the moment
10:23you walk
10:23in that building.
