Miami Dolphins columnist for the Sun Sentinel Chris Perkins recaps the Dolphins 13 draft selections and discusses the vision GM Jon-Eric Sullivan is implementing while rebuilding the roster.
Transcript
00:00He covers the Miami Dolphins. He's a columnist. We have not spoken to him since the Dolphins draft.
00:06And he is on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline right now. How'd they do in your estimation, Perk?
00:13I thought they did all right. I gave him a B-. This is after I gave him a D
00:18last year.
00:19So different administration, different result. You know, what I liked was they were principled.
00:25What I didn't like is I'm not sure about Caden Proctor over over Reuben Bayne.
00:32You know what I what I actually think, you know, when Sully said you've got to take the double off
00:37the wall instead of the homer.
00:39I think that they consider Proctor the double off the wall and bang the homer.
00:44I think everybody here in Miami considers bang the double off the wall and Proctor kind of the feast or
00:50famine type of home run type of guy.
00:53But I think I think Proctor is going to be OK. What I said was, I think the floor for
00:58him is Juwan James and the ceiling is Laramie Tunsil.
01:02I don't think he's going to be a bust at all. I'm just not sure he's going to be better
01:07than Caleb Downs or Reuben Bayne.
01:10As far as the rest of the draft? Yeah, I thought they did OK.
01:13I would have liked to have seen him get an edge rusher before Trey Moore in the fourth round from
01:17Texas.
01:18But like Sully said, you can't fix it all in one weekend. So I gave a B-.
01:24Well, Perk, what about because I listened to Sully this morning.
01:27What about like the multiple positions that Proctor can play for, that Chris Johnson can come inside, outside?
01:34Like we have so many positions to fill. We have to get guys that can play multiple positions.
01:39I thought that was a great point.
01:41I do think that's a great point. That goes to Trey Moore and Kyle Lewis, the two fourth round linebackers
01:47they picked up.
01:48Like I said, Trey Moore from Texas, Kyle Lewis from Pitt.
01:51Here's one thing that I do worry about, Shannon, when you just talk about you can just move Caden Proctor
01:57to guard.
01:58He'll be one of the biggest guards in NFL history, along with Mekhi Becton.
02:04And, you know, Proctor is, what do they list them, 6'7", 360, along with Mekhi Becton.
02:10There's Daniel Faela, I think, from the New York Giants.
02:14I know Jonathan Ogden played some guard before his Hall of Fame left tackle career, and he was huge.
02:21He was like 6'8", 340, 360.
02:24So we've seen it, Shannon, but I'm not sure there's a reason that we don't see more guys that size
02:31play guard.
02:32So I'm very wait and see.
02:35I'm like, yeah, we'll just move him to guard.
02:37Now, look, Sully, in all fairness, Sully says that's the initial look that he will get is at left guard,
02:43and they are going to cross-train him at tackle also.
02:46So it's kind of a feeling out thing.
02:48They're not saying that he's definitely going to be a guard,
02:51but I'm a little wary of how he's going to look at guard at that size.
02:55So if we're just looking at the early look of what the offensive line is going to look like,
03:01do you think this will be a significant upgrade to a season-to-go perk?
03:05Patrick Paul, left tackle, Proctor next to him to the right,
03:10obviously Brew at center, Jonah Savainaya, he said, you know, a leap from Jonah,
03:17I mean, I guess that's the hope, at more of his natural position at right guard,
03:21and then Austin Jackson, knock on wood, that he can stay healthy.
03:25You like that perk? You like that look for the Dolphins?
03:29Yeah, it's a good look. I think it's a good look.
03:31We'll see what Jamari Sawyer can do if he can insert himself at the guard position,
03:35maybe push Jonah, or look, maybe Proctor ends up starting at right tackle,
03:41and they kick Austin Jackson to left guard, where he played 21 games, or 13 games in 2021.
03:49They do have a lot of options.
03:51You know, and Sully said it's all about getting the best five on the field.
03:55So, you know, Solana, right now, any look is as good as any other
04:00before we see them in pads or in joint practices or anything else.
04:04I don't think there are many wrong answers right now.
04:07I'll put it to you like that.
04:08They have some decent options.
04:11It's not like you're putting, you know, a non-starter out there.
04:16I think they have six starting caliber guys.
04:19It's just can they be effective enough when you don't really have a good receiving core?
04:26You're going to have to run the ball a lot the way it looks this season.
04:29Are those guys going to be good enough to do that and sufficiently protect Malik Willis?
04:33But I like the way it looks right now.
04:35Yeah, that's acceptable.
04:37And, Perk, you're talking about running the ball, man.
04:40I've been telling people since the draft that this is going to be a different-looking team.
04:44They didn't draft anybody under five feet.
04:47I mean, under six feet until the fifth round.
04:50You just see what they're trying to do.
04:52Six-foot-three receivers, six-foot-six guards.
04:55You brought up Proctor being six-six at guard.
04:58They're about to be a bully team.
05:00Do you like the bully team approach?
05:02Coach, and I've said it before, I love it, but Hawks are track meet, guys.
05:07So we've gone back and forth about this track meet stuff.
05:10I like bully teams.
05:12Man, bully, Shannon.
05:14Line up on the line and knock this dude the heck off the line of scrimmage.
05:18Hit him in the mouth.
05:19Knock his bleep in the dirt.
05:21Knock his head off.
05:23Hard hat.
05:23Lunch fail.
05:24Old-school, run-the-ball football.
05:26That's what I want.
05:27I'm tired of the track meet, the sprint relay team, the cutesy finesse 7-on-7.
05:32Let's get some social media likes.
05:34Bump all that mess.
05:35Hit him in the mouth.
05:37And that's what I think we're about to do.
05:38You hear him, Hawk?
05:39I want a double reverse, and then I want someone fleet of foot to go 90 yards down the sideline,
05:46run right through the tunnel, hop into an Uber, and head over to Shake Shag for a rib sandwich.
06:05What would have gotten them an A for your draft grade?
06:09So you give them a B-.
06:10What are you counting against them?
06:12That they didn't take downs, they didn't take Bain?
06:15What else are you counting against them?
06:18It's not necessarily that they didn't take downs or Bain.
06:22It's that there aren't a whole lot of alphas in this draft.
06:26You know, maybe Caden Proctor is.
06:28I do like the Chris Johnson pick at number 30.
06:31I think everybody likes that.
06:32Or 27, right?
06:3327.
06:34I think everybody likes Chris Johnson.
06:37It's Proctor, you know, what is he going to be?
06:40I think he's going to be safe.
06:41I don't think he's going to be Trent Brown or, you know, Jonathan Ogden.
06:46Or, you know, we'll see if he's Laramie Tunsil.
06:49He's a safe pick.
06:51Johnson is a safe pick.
06:52Jacob Rodriguez is a safe pick.
06:54You go down the line, and there's just not that Reuben Bain alpha, that Caleb Downs alpha.
07:01And again, it's not that they didn't pick those specific players.
07:04It's just that there's nobody of that ilk in the whole draft.
07:08I understand what they were trying to do.
07:10And again, like Sully said, you can't fix it all in one weekend.
07:14I generally like what they did because they were principled, right?
07:18They went with the tough, smart, versatile player.
07:22They didn't deviate from their plan.
07:24So respect there, and I like it.
07:27Let's see what they do with it.
07:29And if it doesn't work, let's see if they're smart enough and open-minded enough to adjust.
07:34That's what I think, again, was one of the big faults with Mike McDaniel.
07:37Once you saw that track meet was not beating the top teams, you should have adjusted and gotten some more
07:44muscle, some physicality, a better run game.
07:47They were stubborn.
07:48They never adjusted.
07:49So if this doesn't initially work out for Sully in half, let's see if they're open-minded enough and smart
07:56enough to make adjustments.
07:57So this is just the first step.
07:59But, yeah, again, generally, I like what they've done and what they're doing.
08:03And to piggyback off that, they signed a ton of minimum contract guys.
08:09And pretty much today, earlier this morning, Perk, he talked about how the big free agent signings just aren't going
08:17to happen this year.
08:18And it makes sense because of the lack of money and resources.
08:22What is this first year going to be about?
08:25Is it going to be about development of these young guys that we're talking about that they took in the
08:30draft?
08:30Is it going to be about Sully and really happily trying to prove and show us that he has the
08:36ability to be a head coach?
08:38Or are you looking at, like, a target number of wins that you still think this Dolphins team should be
08:44able to get to?
08:46This is about establishing a culture and establishing some ground rules for this is how we're going to play football.
08:53It's going to be physical.
08:54It's going to be aggressive.
08:55We're going to run the ball.
08:56We're going to hit you in the mouth, and these are the types of players we need to execute this.
09:01Next year is the year they need to make a record, make a move in the standings.
09:05This year is just about getting your guys in there and establishing your style of play, seeing what you can
09:12do, seeing what you can't do.
09:13Like, you do have this plan for Trey Moore and Kyle Lewis to be kind of these hybrid-type linebackers.
09:19Let's see if it actually works, or do you need to move Trey Moore to defensive end where he played
09:25in college
09:25and keep Kyle Lewis at a more traditional linebacker?
09:29Do you need to move Kyle Lewis to safety?
09:31Let's see if Chris Johnson can actually play outside and slot.
09:36Do you need to go get another slot?
09:37That's what this year is about.
09:39Can Caden Proctor actually play four positions, and what's his best position?
09:43That's what this year is about.
09:45Find out who you have, what they can do.
09:47Does your system work?
09:48What do we need to tweak?
09:49And then next year, you go get the guys that actually make you make a move in the standings.
09:55But this year, it's all about culture and playing style.
10:00Is it action or movement?
10:02Because I love the wheeling and dealing just because I'm not a part of it.
10:06So 30 to 27, 11 to 12, 13, just moving around.
10:11But there's just making moves, and there's doing things that make sense.
10:15Do you like – or I'll ask you this.
10:17Let me ask the question this way.
10:19Is Sully – is he just moving around?
10:22Is it movement, or is it action that he did in this draft?
10:26We don't know yet.
10:27And that's the worst answer to give on a radio show, but we actually don't know.
10:32You know, when he said we moved up from 30 to 27 because we thought somebody was coming after Chris
10:37Johnson,
10:38okay, let's see how that works out.
10:40Let's see if it was true.
10:41Because you remember they did the same thing with Savai Naya last year, traded up because they thought New England
10:47was coming after Savai Naya.
10:48Whether they were or not, I don't know.
10:51But in hindsight, a year later, that doesn't look like a good move to move up.
10:55We don't know.
10:56You know, just a few days from the draft, I like that he had the conviction and the courage to
11:02make those moves.
11:03Were they necessary?
11:04Did they get the right guy?
11:05We don't know.
11:07If this would have been Greer and McDaniel who have a track record, then we could have had a little
11:12more to go on and say,
11:14yeah, I'm skeptical because they did this with Jonah and they did this with this guy.
11:18We just don't know yet with Sully.
11:22But I like the aggression and I like the conviction.
11:26Chris Perkins from the Sun Sentinel.
11:28We're out of time, but I got to ask you, Monday was National Prime Rib Day, and I am not
11:33a fan of Prime Rib.
11:34Prouder is.
11:36We have heard from many guests as to whether they think Prime Rib is elite or not, including Mike Mayo,
11:43who is the food guru, friend of both of ours.
11:46I take you as a Prime Rib guy.
11:48Am I right?
11:51100%.
11:52100%.
11:52I will take a grilled ribeye steak over Prime Rib, but 100% give me that Prime Rib, baby.
12:00Bloodier the better, right?
12:01Every time.
12:02That's it.
12:03That's it, baby.
12:03That's it.
12:04I like it.
12:05I like it.
12:05You don't mind all that blood water all over the plate?
12:08Blood water.
12:09Nah.
12:10Nah, nah, nah.
12:12You know, I just, I can do it.
12:15I can do it.
12:16It's good to me.
12:17I can eat meat at any temperature, quite honestly, man.
12:19I can go from raw to well done.
12:22It doesn't matter to me.
12:24Man.
12:25Yeah.
12:25Yeah.
12:26I can't argue that.
12:27He is a man.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Look, to me, there's four things to a good steak, right?
12:32You got to season it.
12:33You got to cook it at the right temperature.
12:35You got to let it rest and cut it against the grain.
12:38You do those four things.
12:39You cannot miss.
12:40How many people have you slapped in your life?
12:47I have a couple, but it hasn't been anybody recently.
12:50It hasn't been a few years.
12:52How many guys working the carving station at the country club have you slapped?
12:57Because they didn't give you a big enough piece of prime rib.
13:00You know what?
13:01The last prime rib that I had was at a Dolphins game, and they gave me a good slice, so
13:05I didn't
13:06have to smack anybody.
13:07I was going to see.
13:08And the media, Tom Dorsenkel probably would have come after me with a carving knife.
13:12In the media, that's right.
13:13In the media workroom, the Dolphins media workroom is always known for two things.
13:18The key lime pie, right, Perk?
13:20And the prime rib carving station.
13:22But there's always a line of 30 reporters waiting for it every single game.
13:27Yeah, and to be clear, that prime rib only comes out once a year.
13:30So, you know, people are like, we're elbowing folks out the way.
13:34But is there like a hierarchy of reporters, you know, for the Dolphins?
13:40So, you've been doing it a long time.
13:42So, you can kind of move Joe Shad right out of the way, right?
13:47Man, it is every man for himself.
13:49Women are fighting.
13:50Executives are fighting.
13:51You better come in.
13:53Hard hat and lunch fail, baby.
13:54There's no friends in that carving station line.
13:57Hey, Perk, do you eat in bed?
14:00Because they gave me a hard time because I eat in bed.
14:02Man, I heard that this morning.
14:04Hell no, I don't eat in bed, man.
14:06Crazy.
14:07And look, Mama Perkins didn't allow that from the youth, baby.
14:10There were no ants and roaches and bugs and crumbs in the bedroom.
14:14Mama Perkins, that was from my youth.
14:16And I carried that out my whole life.
14:18Bugs and roaches in the bed?
14:20I'm a grown man.
14:21I know how to keep food on my plate.
14:23Wait, Crowder, your bed looks like an Orkin commercial, I bet.
14:32We'll see you, Perk.
14:34We'll see you, Perk.
14:35I'll see y'all.
14:36There you go.
14:37Chris Perkins from the Sun Sentinel.
14:39Read his work in the Sun Sentinel.
14:40Make sure you download the Sun Sentinel app.
14:43He's got all your dolphin stuff that you need.
14:45We'll see you, Perk.
14:45We'll see you, Perk.
