The Miami Dolphins continue to reshape their roster with a clear focus on building through the draft, while also investing in Malik Willis as a key piece moving forward. Joe and Dave look back at what went wrong during Chris Grier’s tenure and what the new front office must do differently to avoid the same mistakes. With another youth movement underway, the guys discuss how young players will once again be asked to step into major roles.

00:02Hey, welcome back. Nice little teaser right there. All day dandy. Jarvis Landry, Raheem
00:08Mostert, Bradley Chubb talking about recent teams for the Miami Dolphins and the leadership
00:16and everything else, the coaching and what's been the problem, why the Dolphins, for those
00:23guys been around and how good the 2022 slash 2023 team was. And it did. It looked great
00:30on paper. It did. Just did not win enough games. First of all, first thing the Dolphins have
00:39to do is win the division. And you can't, the wild card going on the road to the, usually
00:46the number one or number two seeds. Well, the number one seeds abide, but the number two
00:52or number three seeds, it's just not a good formula. And it hasn't been. And it's usually
00:56to be honest in cold weather, Pittsburgh, Kansas city can go through Buffalo. Those are places
01:02we played playoff games and, you know, equally cold, all three places. Well, Kansas city was
01:08at a different level. Damn near died out there. People, the guy, people did die. People, someone
01:14did have his three foot amputated. I think the number of people, it was so cold. Uh, the team
01:21doctor was saying that, uh, the amount of people, but yeah, three people did, uh, did not respect
01:26enough for living there and died from getting caught while they were drinking in that cold
01:31stuff. So I, uh, but, but listen, just back to the point besides cold weather games in,
01:37in January is you got to win your division. And I went back to all the teams. And last time
01:45the dolphins were going to a lot of playoff games, they're winning their division right
01:50here and playing in the old orange bowl. And we never left. And we lost some of those
01:54games down the road. We won some. And then, you know, we, we lost some, uh, AFC championship
02:00game. And, uh, I think we lost to Seattle one year and we lost to new England, but we also
02:05had success other years and made it to the super bowl. But, but that's the key is, is to
02:11get games down here, but you still got to be able to win in that stuff.
02:15And it's going to be a little difficult for the next decade with Josh Allen in Buffalo
02:20and now Drake may in new England. I mean, there's a challenge. It's not just getting
02:25the roster up and running for the dolphins, but you know, those are two look like look
02:30right now from the view of March and 2026, that there are going to be hurdles for years
02:35to come. No, no. Uh, especially right now with, uh, dead salary cap money and 188
02:42million. That's what they're at right now. Trying to push 200, trying to push that 200
02:47Barry. No team has, has come close to that. And, uh, you talk of it. If you ever wonder
02:54how badly run the dolphins were with their contracts and player decisions and giving
03:00money to the wrong people, there it is, right? There's, there's the evidence. Well, that's
03:05why situation of your general manager, who's in charge of getting this flipped around. I
03:11think the first thing he said is I got to clean up the mess. I got to make some difficult
03:16decisions as some of the fans probably aren't going to like. And second of all, I got to
03:21get draft picks and we got to get back to the old fashioned way that never gets outdated
03:26and that's drafting well and getting high draft picks. And they've set themselves up
03:32now with a lot of seven in the top 94 picks. You know, you could say the Dolphins are right
03:38back where they were entering. I mean, the 2019, 2020. Now they, the great thing, what
03:46they've done is they they've accelerated the tank here to the point the Dolphins had a tank
03:52to get to their draft picks. Whereas, um, John Eric Sullivan came in, he's got a nice draft
03:59class. He set it up to have a nice draft class right away. So you don't have to go through
04:03an awful year to get the rookies on the field. Dave, this draft class for him, his first ever
04:10as the lead guy, first ever as the lead guy, not, not a part of it. Like he was in
04:15green
04:15Bay, but he's a final say guy. Now, um, this is a big one for him, man. Well, this is
04:20going
04:21to set up, does he make it or not? Let's face this off season investing in Willis.
04:26And now you have seven picks in the top 94 and you look, what happened? What
04:31went wrong for Chris Greer? He didn't get the quarterback. He traded a second round
04:36pick for Josh Rosen, which was a flyer. And, uh, you know, so take a chance. They
04:41took a chance and just awful, awful. They didn't do their homework though. But, and
04:47then, but really the first draft, the first, um, you know, when they had multiple, they
04:54set up the draft three, number one picks and none of them worked out to the, to the level
04:59they hoped. Um, certainly not to, or Igben Ogady and Austin Jackson was drafted as a left
05:06tackle. Now he's a right tackle and, and, and, and, you know, an average player when he's
05:12healthy. Um, but, but so just look at it right now that John Eric Sullivan, you know, it's
05:20almost like he'll make or break it with this, this first off season. And then the
05:23other one is I I'm dying to see year two, how that rookie class from last year, um, are
05:31any guys going to be frontline, really good players out of that group? I mean, pro bowl
05:36type players. Nobody showed it as a rookie. Well, I don't even need to say pro bowl average
05:42starters, which was good, solid starters, good, solid starters. Like, Hey, I can win
05:50with these guys. Yeah. I think you didn't see much that from the rookie year, but
05:56kind of the grant about the end of the year seemed to come on. So we'll see where
05:59he's at in year two, but, um, they played a lot. The whole group played a lot. They
06:05got, they got opportunity. Even hell your seventh round quarterback ended up starting
06:09three games. So everybody got some playing time. Every draft pick, it didn't look
06:14like it did not look like a special class. It just looked like, let's hope we got
06:18something. Right. So anyway, uh, we'll see what year two looks like, uh, for, for
06:24that, but yeah, it's, um, then the other thing that's popped up this Jordan
06:29Brooks to Dallas trade that might be taken. I'd like to keep some guys. I don't
06:37know. Look at, I, I guess what, what are they going to give us? Can we get a third
06:41round pick for Jordan Brooks talking about Dallas has two number one picks? Well,
06:46they're not giving us, I think you have to be blown away. Right. Uh, to a third
06:50round pick. I I'm not doing that. Well, some have said, Hey, do you move up? Do, uh, do
06:55you switch first round picks? Uh, they take our 30 and we take their 20 and, and
07:03then on top of it, they throw in a third round pick for, for someone, you know,
07:07like that. I don't know what the value of Jordan Brooks is, but he led the league
07:10in tackles last year and, uh, everything else. Listen, man, everybody raved about
07:14this guy from the time he got on the field to his attitude. When things were
07:19really bad, this guy was, he was an up, he, he was the guy leading the, leading
07:24the charge. He was that guy when the coaches are upstairs in meetings, that's
07:29the guy down telling guys, Hey man, let's get ready. He's also the guy right
07:33now saying I need a new deal. He's on the last year's con and rightfully so. I
07:37mean, if I'm him, I'm saying that off season is a time for business and that's
07:41what I'm sure he's saying. And he's also, he's looking, the Cowboys want me winning
07:47team as opposed to anybody that takes you is going to give you a new contract.
07:51That's almost automatic. So Brewer, who, by the way, how good has he turned out to
07:56be? Hell, I had guys I trusted tell me it was too small and he can't play in a
08:00certain system. And all he did was go out and grade out as one of the top two or
08:05three centers in, in football. He's going to want to get Brewer has value. I mean,
08:09intrinsic value as you build in a team, look, look at the Raiders. They went out
08:14and they're, they're going to bring in the rookie quarterback. So they went out
08:18and made sure they got a, the, the, they spent the rookie, a record price on a
08:24center and Linda bomb out of Baltimore. He might, he might've been the best free
08:28agent in the whole thing. And they got a deal done with him right away. So they
08:31need the Dolphins need Brewer to help out Willis and, um, Jordan Brooks is, you
08:38know, I see, I could see what he's 29. I could see why they might trade him, but at
08:43some point, where's the breaking point to, I don't think there is one.
08:48No, there's not one. I keep thinking that too. And yeah, you got a left
08:51tackle. You're not going to get rid of him. He's, he's young on a rookie
08:55contract and you got a center. I agree. No matter what, that's such an
08:59important position to, to help, uh, a guy that's been basically a backup
09:03quarterback when he plays in this league. So I think he has got a really
09:07important role, uh, on this team, but, and a Chan, there are a lot of people
09:13still don't believe a chance going to be here. I do. I think he'll end up
09:17being there, but he's going to want to get paid too, David. He's not, uh, I'd
09:20pay him. I, I, you, you got the structure of a deal from, uh, James
09:25cook and in Buffalo, what? 48 million with, uh, 30 guaranteed. I had this,
09:32you, you could, uh, he's the guy I would pay, but I agree. You're
09:36going to be working off that contract. Yeah. Yeah. If I'm the agent,
09:39that's a starting point, you know, and you know, you're, you're further
09:42down the line, but Jordan, I, you know, Jordan Brooks, I can see why
09:45they would trade him. Um, I'm just at the point. They got enough
09:49draft picks. They got enough to work with, right? They got enough. You're
09:53not getting ready to owe him. No, but, but at what cost, you know, at
09:59some point I want to keep some of my talent that I guess that's
10:02where I'm at. You don't want one guy looking at the other guy
10:05going, I don't know what to do while you're looking at me. I
10:08don't know. I've never been out here. How many times is a rookie
10:10did you look like, I'm not really sure what did someone help you?
10:12Yeah. Yeah. I think those guys are important. I think a handful
10:16of those guys are very important to this team. And again, I'm not
10:20saying I don't need some guys, not a very good player being the
10:23leader of the team, you know, nobody. And by the way, nobody wants
10:26to hear from that guy. Like, really? Nobody wanted to hear
10:29from me going, Hey guys, let's pick it up. All right. Hey,
10:33I'll tell you what though. If you do need to pick me up, I want to
10:35tell you about Dr. Barrett recovery unplugged, man. I got
