Miami Dolphins Head Coach Jeff Hafley speaks to the media ahead of Friday's preseason game. He reveals his preseason plans for Dolphins vs Commanders.
Transcript
00:00Miami Dolphins are back on the practice field today.
00:02We got a preseason game coming up on Friday.
00:07This was Jeff Halfley this morning when asked about how much playing time everyone's going to get.
00:12And this is what the Dolphins head coach had to say.
00:17Everybody who is on our team right now needs to be ready to play.
00:20That's how I see it.
00:22Truthfully, what I'd like to see is how many reps each guy gets in the Washington practice.
00:28Right. And who comes out of the Washington practice healthy?
00:31The Washington practice is really important to me.
00:33I think it's a really good time with where we're at in the competition, not really to evaluate the team,
00:39OK, but to evaluate the individuals.
00:41Now, I think you always want to evaluate everything.
00:43So I say that loosely, but I think it's an important time to go against a different color jersey, different
00:50stimulus, change of environment.
00:52I think that's a really, really good opportunity to see, you know, where some of our guys are at in
00:57these competitions that we have.
00:58So I want to maximize the reps in that practice.
01:01So, for example, if a player were to get 40 plus reps in practice, which might be a little bit
01:07high with only a day in between, how much can I really play him?
01:10Can we really play him in a preseason game two years later?
01:13We're we've got to be safe there. Right.
01:15So what I'd like to do so we can kind of end those questions of who's playing is let me
01:20see where we're at after the practice.
01:22I'd like for everybody to be available to play.
01:25And then if I have to pull certain guys or dial down certain guys based on the reps that they
01:29got in that Washington practice, then we'll do so.
01:32Make sense. So I'll probably I'll have a better answer to that Wednesday night at some point when we figure
01:40all that out.
01:41And that's just me being honest. Well, thank you. Thank you for the honesty, Jeff.
01:45Yeah, there is some. And that's why sometimes when you have joint practices, you notice the vets don't play that
01:53much.
01:54Yeah, they get they may get all the reps. You want the physicality of a game without the other stuff.
02:04And you can do that in practices like you can have the competition, you can have working against somebody else.
02:09You can have all that. And in the game, you might run a series or two, not necessarily to get
02:16the competition part of it,
02:18but just to get how we're going to warm up, how we're going to prepare for a game, what mindset
02:23we need to go to start a game.
02:25Those are the things that you're really working on when you have a joint practice.
02:29So once that happens, then you get all the guys who didn't do nothing during the week when you were
02:34practicing against the other team.
02:36They getting all the work against their guys who also didn't get any work during the week.
02:41This has become a very chic thing. The joint practice.
02:45Everybody is kind of like it's it's almost to the coaches almost replaced the preseason game,
02:49almost to a detriment because it's like if then we've completely forgotten about the preseason and nobody can tackle and
02:55nobody can tackle.
02:56Yeah. So like I get it. It is what it is right now.
02:59I do wish like it wasn't such a factor because they're only doing it once this week.
03:05So, you know, I would like to see some of the starters.
03:07This is a little bit of a different situation with this team, too, because of how young it is.
03:11Yeah. And that that's but but but still and keep in mind and going with the way everything else is
03:19going to football lately.
03:21I don't care how young or how long you've been in the league.
03:24Do you really want to practice against another team during the week and then play them a day later in
03:31a game?
03:32You've already you know what I mean?
03:34You've already gotten your work in. Keep in mind, you have 80 guys.
03:38It's interesting thing, too, because it's like, well, why did it be it'd be I don't know, like you guys
03:42still to join practice back in the day.
03:44Yeah. Yeah. But like, I feel like it's become more highlighted over like the last 10 years.
03:50And they're like, yeah, we we we've really used it as like the tool that's been our woman.
03:56And they've kind of used the game as like, who are the five guys we're going to end up keeping
04:00on the end of the roster?
04:01Think about this. We did four practices.
04:06Two. We did. So we go there on, say, Wednesday or we go to a Tuesday.
04:13You practice two on one, two on Wednesday, two on Thursday.
04:17You know, mornings, full pads, evening might be shells and you do seven on seven and mostly passing stuff.
04:23Right. Do the same thing on Thursday.
04:27Friday, you practice with yourself. You just practice your own team.
04:30Right. And then you play on Saturday. So you were there for a whole week.
04:36It wasn't just this is just one practice.
04:40So I don't know if it carries as much weight because, you know, even last year when they did two
04:47practices,
04:47one of the things you wanted to see was let me see if my team responds and we can get
04:51up.
04:52But if we get our butts whooped. Right.
04:55And that was one of the things you were looking at. That's that's a lesson learned, too.
04:59How are my guys going to respond? How are my guys going to fight back?
05:03And so just to have one practice and have it done, I think you're eliminating part of that competition aspect
05:12of it that, you know,
05:14who's going to say I ain't going down? I ain't going out like this.
05:18Joe Dirty says Jeff Havley seems like a good dude who says the truth.
05:23It's football. Listen, he's all football. That's all it is.
05:27It's all the bells and whistles of the last regime are are gone.
05:32Like I watched the I watched the five minute mic'd up this weekend of Jeff Havley.
05:39I was sitting in the sun. I'm like, I'm going to watch Jeff Havley and I'm going to watch him
05:43mic'd up.
05:44And it was almost like the bit that I did with with Mike McDaniel with the ums, except it was
05:50just Jeff Havley.
05:52And all it was for five straight minutes was he first of all, he's a very aggressive gum chewer, very
05:58aggressive on the gum chewing while the practice going.
06:00Let's go. Right. Go. Right. Let's go. Right.
06:04Well, malicious. Good. Right. I don't know. Good.
06:06They do like a dentine.
06:08I don't know. I don't know. I could say the little packs, but he is just football.
06:15Right. There's no there's no sprinkles.
06:18It's just let's go up. Let's go up. I mean, that's to be honest with you.
06:23That's all. That's it. That's all Denny really did.
06:26We never told it was. We never heard from Denny when we did hear from Denny.
06:31It wasn't good. Yeah.
06:33The only the only change of but the entire time was was at the end.
06:37He gave like a little speech. Here's like here's the end of his his speech.
06:41The end of practice.
06:43That's really good work, man. That's a long practice.
06:46It's hard. It's hot.
06:48I love the way the offense came out today.
06:50Like I loved it, man.
06:52Running the ball, physical, throwing the ball, catching the ball, making plays.
06:56Then the defense responds.
06:57Then it goes back and forth.
06:59We all got to come out like that, man.
07:01You got to come out locked in and be detailed right away.
07:04The other thing is don't save anything.
07:07I feel like some guys are kind of waiting it out a little bit.
07:10See how they feel.
07:11See how long practice is going to be.
07:13And then they kind of take off at the end.
07:14Don't do that.
07:16Push yourself in practice right off the bat.
07:19Put it all out there, man.
07:20Some of you are.
07:21And then let your teammates pick you up and carry you.
07:24Let someone else go in.
07:25But we got to jump start fast.
07:27You guys all understand what I'm saying?
07:29That's a hell of a day.
07:30Like hell of a day.
07:31Appreciate the work.
07:32How tough this team's becoming.
07:33Let's watch the film and be more detailed.
07:35Some of you say, what's the.
07:38Hey, that.
07:39Listen.
07:40Football.
07:41Save.
07:42We.
07:44This is all we wanted to know during when we went off of camp.
07:48Mm-hmm.
07:49What periods do we have?
07:50We normally.
07:52We.
07:52It got to the point where you knew you did the heavy stuff in the morning and then you
07:58come back with, you know, seven on seven and number mostly passing in the evening.
08:04And then we go, how many plays a team?
08:09How many plays a nine on seven?
08:12So he is accurate in that we pacing ourselves.
08:16Because me and Robert be in the back saying, you get the first three.
08:20I get the second three.
08:22And we lead them last four to Robert and to Mo and Harold.
08:29You know, they bet.
08:31But then what happens as you go through practice, things change.
08:35Because if you having a bad day, the coach don't want to take you out.
08:40So then you got to get a feel for that.
08:42And then we'll look over and say, all right, let's just alternate.
08:46Let's just go every other play.
08:47Because the young guys ain't going to get no reps.
08:50So, like, yes, he's right.
08:54He's 100% accurate that some guys trying to come out here and feel their way around,
08:58just go all like, you ain't tricking me.
09:00So you had a plan with Robert, but the practice wasn't going well,
09:06so the coach wasn't going to give you any breaks, so he was going to go to the young guys?
09:09No.
09:10What happens is, if you have a veteran team, it works out pretty good in that you can determine
09:19how many reps you get if the practice is going okay, right?
09:24And then you can say, let the young guys get these last two.
09:28If practice is going bad, or practice isn't going, or the defense is dominating that day,
09:34when the coach look in the huddle, he better see Leroy or Robert in the huddle.
09:41He don't want to see, oh, y'all gave up?
09:44Y'all quit?
09:45What, we not trying to win?
09:46You know, something along those lines.
09:49So you have to, as far as, you know, when you hear coaches talk about competition,
09:55that is one of the things right there is that, oh, no, I ain't giving up no reps.
10:02I want to see this through.
10:03I want to fight like hell to turn it around.
10:06So that's how it gets a little tricky with how practice, but half is right from this standpoint.
10:13You are 100% pacing yourself.
10:17Is anybody allowed to just raise their hand and just be like, but coach, it's so hot.
10:21Hey, and then Bill, if you ain't, imagine doing that and saying, no, we better take all the reps
10:28because practice is not going, we need to finish strong.
10:31And then Bill do punitive run.
10:35Right, so now, we used to have this 50-yard hill, and he would say, run the hill.
10:41So now you pacing yourself because you don't know what type of punitive measures he going to take after practice.
10:48I was in the Home Depot parking lot yesterday, and I felt like, how does anybody practice football in this?
10:54Because just the walk from the car to the Home Depot entrance, it felt like I was on the sun.
11:00You know what was crazy?
11:04You're just so used to it that you don't think of it that way.
11:09You really, I mean, and believe it or not, we had more 100-degree days up north than we ever
11:17had down here.
11:20So, from that standpoint, I mean, let's think about it this way.
11:26Minnesota had somebody die because of heat.
11:28I remember that, Corey Stringer.
11:30Corey Stringer.
11:30That did not happen down here.
11:32That's crazy.
11:32Right?
11:33No matter as hot.
11:34But the thing is, is that...
11:36Well, that kind of felt like a big change.
11:38Like, that was, I mean, obviously a tragedy, but that felt like they kind of, like, was that the...
11:42Because I don't remember what the Corey Stringer thing, was that a two-a-day thing, or that was just
11:46that they didn't hydrate?
11:47Because I remember they came up with a whole thing about that.
11:50A little bit of both.
11:50But the thing is, is that it happened, like, a couple of days before, and then he took the next
11:57day off, or the next morning off.
11:59And then the coach went to him and said, I need you to go this evening because I guess practice
12:03wasn't going well.
12:03And that's what, that's kind of how, listen, I have been, you know, you have a lot of guys pushing
12:15you, and there's a fine line between pushing somebody to compete and pushing somebody through something that they can't comprehend
12:24themselves.
12:25Yeah.
12:25And what happened was, it made the whole league, and all sports, just more aware of dehydration, right?
12:34Like, you're trying to fight through it.
12:38Look, the honest truth, you go through these practices, and after, like, a couple of days, and you're trying to
12:46do everything you can to keep your weight on, right?
12:50You're just not hungry.
12:51You're so dehydrated that you can't even eat.
12:54And you go out to practice, and you're just fighting through it, seeing spots, because you're so dehydrated.
13:01These things happen, right?
13:04You, to a certain extent, you have to go through it to know where your body is, so you have
13:12to learn how to rehydrate and what you need to do to take steps when you're going through it, right?
13:20And so, but yeah, it is excruciating.
13:26It's tough.
13:28Like, the hardest thing to do, believe it or not, is think.
13:32You get dehydrated, you don't know what the play is, you don't know which way, and those are the things
13:36you got to fight through.
