00:16Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 major details that only hardcore
00:23fans may have noticed in Season 2 of Twisted Metal.
00:34Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:39Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:44The Dragula Drop!
00:55Obviously, no one could have missed this moment because it was such a huge part of the midseason.
01:00As the first event of the tournament begins, we're treated to an epic race to Tournament
01:05City as Rob Zombie's Dragula starts blasting in the background.
01:20On the surface, this could just be a kickass moment for the show.
01:24However, Rob Zombie has strong ties to the Twisted Metal franchise, as some of his music was
01:30used for the notoriously awful Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4.
01:34While both games were dreadful in their gameplay and tones, they have both been fondly remembered
01:39for the music, with TM4 even including the heavy metal musician as a playable character.
01:55The Legend of Trashman?
02:09Speaking of TM4, let's talk about one weird character from that game who didn't make it
02:15into the show.
02:16At least, not yet.
02:18In Season 2's premiere, Sweet Tooth learns about a notorious killer lurking in Mississippi
02:23named Trashman.
02:25I knew he'd find me and kill me!
02:27TRASHMAN!
02:28Wait, wait, wait, wait, Trashman?
02:31Who, who's Trashman?
02:32The biggest killer this island, Mississippi!
02:36AHHHHH!
02:37Although, we never see or hear about this guy after this point.
02:40So, who is he exactly?
02:42Well, Trashman was a character who only ever appeared in Twisted Metal 4 and he drove one
02:48of the most durable vehicles in the entire game.
02:51A massive garbage truck with spikes at the front to pierce enemies.
02:55He was kind of your token dark side Mr. Slam hybrid.
02:59Fun fact though, he was voiced by John St. John, who you may know as the voice of Duke
03:05Newcomb and the voice of Big the Cat from Sonic the Hedgehog.
03:09They wish for paint of trash!
03:11Whole world of garbage!
03:14Yes, they wish this whole big world to be garbage!
03:18I Dream of Kelly.
03:20Gotta say, I still like the first Raven better than you.
03:24Ugh.
03:25Downtown Raven?
03:26Yeah.
03:28Everyone loves her.
03:30One other detail that we found interesting in Season 2's premiere was the introduction
03:34of Raven.
03:35Not that Raven, the other Raven.
03:37The new Raven.
03:38It is here that we learn about her best friend, Kelly, and how the two of them were picked on
03:43by their classmates, and what caused Kelly's death.
03:46Kelly had already been hinted at in Season 1's premiere episode, so it was about time we got
03:51some answers as to who this may have been.
03:53The only way you're getting out of this city is by driving my car.
03:58You will help me bring back Kelly!
04:00Who's Kelly?
04:02Turns out, the story is very similar to the girl's story in Twisted Metal Black, save for
04:08one key difference.
04:09Where as TMB showed Kelly drowning after being pushed into the water by their bullies, the
04:15show depicts the classic, prank gone horribly wrong situation, and shows Kelly falling off
04:21of a roof and drowning in a pool below.
04:23What we didn't expect was for Raven to keep her on life support for literally decades.
04:30Just a setback.
04:32We'll be together again soon, Kelly.
04:35I promise.
04:38Meet the Sparks.
04:41So what do you wish for?
04:44Danger?
04:45Speed?
04:46Brutality?
04:47Freedom?
04:48What if I said you can have all that, and more, with Twisted Metal?
04:56Fast forwarding to Season 2's final moments, we wouldn't be surprised if regular viewers
05:00were caught off guard or didn't catch Calypso's meeting with NBC executives.
05:05During his pitch for Twisted Metal, one of the NBC executives refers to Calypso as Mr.
05:11Sparks.
05:12Car is driving up the Eiffel Tower!
05:14I don't mean to interrupt your pitch, Mr. Sparks, but this seems very expensive.
05:19In Twisted Metal 2, this was indeed Calypso's name before the apocalypse, and he was known
05:25as one of the most dangerous and sadistic drivers in the demolition derby scene.
05:29But one weird little tidbit about him in TM2 is that he doesn't yet know that the driver
05:35of Grasshopper is his own daughter, Krista Sparks.
05:39The show doesn't seem to be pulling that thread with Dollface and Calypso, but everything between
05:44him and Mayhem, on the other hand, it does call some things into question now, doesn't
05:49it?
05:50Daddy?
05:51It's me, Krista!
05:52I'm back!
05:54Krista, I thought you had died.
05:57I thought, in the car crash that almost killed me, you're alive!
06:01The Mad Doctor.
06:03I'm impressed you got past my guard dog.
06:06Not many do.
06:07Given his swift and untimely death in Season 2's third episode, one could easily dismiss
06:12Dr. Zimu as a throwaway character.
06:15He had, what, five minutes of screen time, maybe?
06:18Not even?
06:19So, what significance does he have here?
06:21Well, about the same as he did in Twisted Metal Head On.
06:25Yes, this character comes from only one of the games, and in that installment, he was
06:29very much a key part of Axel's story.
06:32Just like in the show, Zimu is the one responsible for putting Axel into the rig, and giving him
06:38cybernetic limbs.
06:39The only question the show didn't seem to give a solid answer to, was how exactly Axel
06:44wound up in this entire situation in the first place.
06:47It's okay, Head On didn't explain it either, really, but perhaps we'll get an answer in Season
06:523?
06:53Remember, Axel was eliminated from the tournament, doesn't mean he died.
07:07A brother in arms.
07:09Now, this was a callback we were not expecting at all.
07:13In the tenth episode, Calypso takes away all of the souls that had supposedly been collected
07:19by Grimm.
07:20In his moment of shock, Grimm rattles off some of the names of the souls he had.
07:25One of these names has great significance on Grimm's story in Twisted Metal Black.
07:31Grace?
07:33Zachary?
07:34The Colonel?
07:35Benny?
07:37Where did all of you go?
07:39Benny was the name of Grimm's closest friend during his time in the Vietnam War.
07:44The two were soon captured and thrown into a pit, forced with the decision to either starve
07:49to death, or figure out a way to eat.
07:52Benny was the first to die, leaving Grimm with the most difficult, demented decision in
07:58his life.
07:58Grimm wound up wearing Benny's skull as a helmet, refusing to ever take it off.
08:03While this dark backstory is nowhere close to what we saw on the show, it was still an
08:08awesome callback to one of the best stories in the franchise.
08:11I don't know what's happening.
08:14I never know what's happening.
08:20Buckets!
08:21Ha!
08:22Nothing but well.
08:23Best school this side of Alabama.
08:26But there are also perks.
08:27For one, I provided delightful accommodations.
08:31Casual viewers may not have understood the importance of this tribute, but man, every
08:36Twisted Metal fan turned into that gif of Leo DiCaprio pointing at the screen and going,
08:41Oh!
08:41Oh!
08:42When Calypso drops the contestants off at the place they're staying at, we get a pretty
08:47explicit reveal of the name of the place.
08:49Jaffe Campbell High School.
08:52This is a tribute to Twisted Metal's creators, David Jaffe and Scott Campbell.
08:56With the exception of TM3 and TM4, Jaffe and Campbell worked together as the heads of
09:02every Twisted Metal project, with Campbell being producer and Jaffe being creative director.
09:08Campbell would serve as director and producer for Head On, as Jaffe was busy in 2005 trying
09:14to finish up God of War.
09:15Both developers have since retired from the game industry and are now pursuing other ventures.
09:24Great. High school. Again.
09:27Hailing a taxi.
09:29Charlie Kane has been hinted at already in the Twisted Metal TV series, having been mentioned
09:34by Wesley during Sweet Tooth's flashback in Season 1.
09:37You'd still be living in a taxi cab if your unhinged father didn't go to jail.
09:43Go, take your mark.
09:44But with so much time passing between Sweet Tooth's time as a child actor and the post-apocalyptic
09:49world, one would understandably assume Charlie was probably dead?
09:54Well, Season 2's ending has told us that may not be the case, as Sweet Tooth is chained
09:59up and led by a random yellow taxi cab.
10:02In the games, Charlie Kane was always driving taxi cabs.
10:06However, the menacing sign tells us he may not just be leading an army of taxi drivers.
10:12We may see the show pull in a certain vehicle from TM2.
10:16Do we sense the presence of Dark Tooth?
10:20Oh yeah? From who?
10:22Your pops. His holiness saw you fight the tournament. He's, uh, real impressed with what's become
10:28of his legacy.
10:30Daddy?
10:30The show is going on the road.
10:34Twisted Metal is a 22-episode reality TV competition, sending 16 combatants into a high-stakes
10:40demolition derby. The only rule? Survive.
10:46Another tease we noticed during Season 2's finale was the idea of the vehicular carnage
10:51taking place around the world. Calypso pitches this exact idea to the NBC executives, while
10:57John, Quiet, Stu, and Mayhem realize later in the episode that nowhere is safe for them,
11:03and they are now planning to recruit help for their cause.
11:06We're gonna need help.
11:09We don't need help.
11:12We need cars.
11:14Between these two moments, it looks like Season 3 might be taking Twisted Metal outside of
11:20the divided states of America. If not, then can we just appreciate Calypso's super meta pitch
11:27in turning TM2 into a reality TV show? Like, that was meta on so many levels.
11:33And if you own the eyes of America, then you own the world.
11:42The Lost Story of Apocalypse Nine
11:46The Apocalypse Nine. They feel nothing and are very hard to kill.
11:52This might be the most obscure piece of Twisted Metal lore. So obscure that you'd have to be an avid
11:59fan of the franchise
12:01in all of the game's development histories to even notice this.
12:04At first, the psychopathic dummies that make Apocalypse Nine seem to be completely original ideas made to keep the show
12:12somewhat original with its take on Twisted Metal.
12:15However, Apocalypse Nine was actually a briefly explored faction back when the original game was being developed decades ago.
12:24These guys were planned to be the final boss instead of Minion and were given the ability to pilot the
12:30tank with their own minds via controller helmets.
12:34Apocalypse Nine was axed along with all of the other cutscenes made for the game as Sony believed the cutscenes
12:39would be a detriment to the game's commercial performance.
12:55Were there any other cool details or references you spotted in Season 2 of Twisted Metal?
