00:00Now, I've talked to the suppliers, and they are very keen to start a business relationship.
00:05So, if all goes well, we should be doing very nice stuff for ourselves, which is, you know, good.
00:11Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today, we're getting nostalgic.
00:15In this video, we're not only taking you back to 2002, but also 1986,
00:21and digging up the most tubular, bodacious, and radical facts we didn't know about GTA Vice City.
00:28We just set him loose in Vice City. We give him a little cash to get started, okay?
00:33Give him a few months, then we go down. Pay him a little visit, right? See how he's doing.
00:39Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:44videos.
00:47Hanging Up
00:47So how'd the deal go down? You sitting on some white gold?
00:51Look, Sonny, we were set up. The deal was an ambush. Harry and Lee were dead.
00:55You better be kidding me, Tommy!
00:56Even as far back as 2002, Rockstar was annoying players by forcing them to slowly walk while
01:02listening to phone calls or conversations. But, at least for Vice City, there's a way to skip this
01:08inconvenience. Just before a phone call comes in, equip an assault rifle in your hands,
01:12answer the call, and then immediately aim with the gun. Once you zoom out from the scope,
01:17the phone call will continue while you're free to run to your heart's content.
01:20Just don't try to get into any cars while the call is ongoing, or else it will cancel the call
01:26and you'll be forced to listen
01:27to it all over again. It would seem the feedback about this irritation reached Rockstar, as in San Andreas you
01:33can simply
01:33skip the phone calls.
01:34You have proved yourself, man. You got big cojones.
01:38Well, thank you, Umberto. Nobody said that to me since I left jail.
01:42Pop culture craze.
01:43This is Purr Percy, Dick, and Willy's in the cars here, and that was a good friend of mine.
01:47Guys, I want you to meet a good friend of mine. This is Tommy. We go way back.
01:51Alley, pal. And, uh, what was your name again?
01:55Leave it out, Jez. You remember. Don't be playing them games with me.
01:58The GTA series is renowned for parodying and roasting pop culture, and Vice City is full of references to iconic
02:05shows,
02:05locations, and more if players know where to look. Players can find a billboard for Fun World, which is a
02:11clear reference
02:12to Disney World, especially notable for copying the House of Mouse's famous font.
02:17A hardware store's window advertisement asked Tooled Up, It's Hammer Time, in reference to MC Hammer's classic track,
02:23You Can't Touch This, a parody of FedEx called Spand Express, or more simply, Spandex,
02:29and finally, in almost every garage, you can find a random yellow door in reference to the Dukes of Hazzard,
02:35in which there was always an unexplained yellow car door in Cooter's garage.
02:39Let me guess. You thought I could use a guardian angel?
02:44I'm just saying, you need to let me in there, my man.
02:47Ghost Tower. The map for Vice City experienced quite a few changes during development,
02:52and while much of the updates were minimal, one was significant enough that remnants of the original version still remain.
02:59While approaching the Escobar International Airport via plane or helicopter,
03:03a lone ghostly tower can be seen before the rest of the map loads in.
03:07This is the only remaining asset from the original version of the airport,
03:11and somehow, Rockstar forgot to remove this lone control tower when they updated the location,
03:17leaving its low-poly or far-distance render intact while the rest of the airport pops in the closer you
03:22get.
03:23A.K. not.
03:28The Grand Theft Auto series has always had an arsenal of weapons that would make any gun enthusiast green with
03:34envy,
03:35but there's one specific weapon that is strangely missing from GTA Vice City.
03:39Despite being present in every other 3D GTA game,
03:43the AK-47 is not available for purchase or use anywhere in the game,
03:48despite even being available in the spin-off title Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories.
03:53It's unknown why this iconic weapon of the series was excluded in this entry,
03:57as the weapon is even referenced in the game files,
04:00alluding to its inclusion at some point during development.
04:09Always Sonny.
04:10Hello, Sonny.
04:11Tommy!
04:12Tommy!
04:13It's been too long.
04:17I know, I know.
04:18You're just overwhelmed with emotion.
04:20Throughout the events of GTA Vice City,
04:22Tommy's boss Sonny Forelli remains a constant thorn in Tommy's side in his rise to power in Vice City.
04:28However, for those who always felt like Sonny was constantly looking over their shoulder,
04:33they weren't far off in their assumption.
04:35It turns out that Sonny's backroom office is quite a bit closer than you think.
04:39With the limited capabilities of the PS2 at the time,
04:42Rockstar had to get creative,
04:44so in order to save on memory and be able to cut between scenes of Sonny and Tommy quickly,
04:49Sonny's office is right next door to Tommy's room in the Ocean View Hotel,
04:53just in an out-of-bounds area.
04:55But because it's you,
04:57because we got history,
04:58I'm gonna let you handle this.
05:00Look, Sonny,
05:01you've got my word.
05:03I'll be in touch.
05:08Easy money.
05:09Earning money in Vice City is a major component of the gameplay,
05:13as you need to be truly flush with cash to purchase the many properties available in the game.
05:18However, there is an easy way to rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars if you have the patience to
05:23do so.
05:24In the original version, anyways.
05:26By requisitioning a taxi and picking up more than a hundred fares in a row,
05:30which can take upwards of a couple hours,
05:33you'll earn bonuses which can bring your total payout to well over $100,000.
05:38However, in the remastered version,
05:40this exploit is capped at around $40,000 to $50,000 and pedestrians will even stop populating the streets.
05:46Of course, you need to abandon your latest money-making scheme.
05:49Real Estate Tycoon
05:51You need to start seizing territory and let Vice City know where the new players in town.
05:56You know what I'm saying?
05:56What you need is a legitimate front, Tommy. Real Estate. It's never done me no harm.
06:01GTA Vice City introduced several new game mechanics to the series,
06:05the most notable of which was real estate.
06:08Throughout Vice City, Tommy can purchase up to 7 safe houses and 10 assets.
06:12While these purchases aren't necessary to complete the game,
06:15for those wanting 100% completion,
06:18acquiring every single purchasable property is going to cost you quite a large sum of pocket change.
06:23To acquire every single property, Tommy will need to spend $441,000.
06:30Strangely, the total for just the safe houses comes to around $41,000,
06:34meaning all the assets cost upwards of $400,000.
06:38Better start building your portfolio and running some taxi fares.
06:42Guess you're the new owner.
06:43What are you?
06:44Mob, cartel.
06:45You don't look Mexican.
06:47Anywho, I guess you better get on with the things that are going to change around here crap.
06:52Medical Scam
06:53American healthcare isn't cheap, and even in the virtual world,
06:57you're not going to get some much-needed medical services without forking over a bit of green.
07:02Normally, if you pick up a health icon anywhere in the world,
07:05you'll simply regain your health and move on with your day.
07:08However, if you choose to use the health icon in front of the hospital,
07:11you'll be charged $20 for the service.
07:14What's more, is if you don't have $20 to your name,
07:17you won't be able to pick up the health icon in front of the hospital,
07:21and they'll even remind you that you're too broke to afford healthcare.
07:25North Wheel.
07:37GTA Vice City added several new vehicles for players to use while exploring the coastal region of Vice City,
07:43and by far the fan-favorite inclusion is the motorbikes.
07:46Zipping around the streets of Vice City offered a new sense of freedom and speed in the series.
07:52However, one of the coolest additions is the ability to pull off wheelies while maxing out the speedometer.
07:58Strangely, however, whenever driving north, the motorbike is unable to pull off this maneuver.
08:04Any other direction players drive, and there's no issue.
08:06But, for whatever reason, if you're driving due north on your motorbike,
08:10you're locked to the road and unable to pull off your usual sick tricks.
08:21Update Vices.
08:23Now, recently a Haitian ganglord died. Apparently the Cubans did it.
08:27Nobody's certain, but let's make them certain.
08:29You disguise yourself as a Cuban hombre and head on down and crash that funeral.
08:33The Grand Theft Auto series is no stranger to controversy,
08:36and naturally some of the franchise's content has been toned down or updated over the years through subsequent releases.
08:42But somehow, out of all the games in the series,
08:45Vice City is the one with the most updates to its controversial content.
08:50After claims of racism against the Haitian community for their portrayal in the game,
08:54Rockstar updated everything from dialogue to subtitles, phone calls, and even entire cutscenes
08:59to remove any references to Haitians or Cubans.
09:03While these updates were almost completely unnecessary to begin with,
09:06some of these changes made certain cutscenes almost incomprehensible
09:10due to the removed context with characters pantomiming scenes without any dialogue.
09:15You're Two-Face, Tommy. You're either Two-Face or you're a wimp, baby boy.
09:19They're laughing at me.
09:21Easy, easy.
09:22Prime Real Estate.
09:24Diaz! I've come to take over your business.
09:27Tommy, you betrayed me, you idiot.
09:29GTA Vice City makes it no secret it takes many of its inspirations from the hit TV series, Miami Vice,
09:34but it's also clear the devs were inspired by another classic crime movie of the 1980s,
09:40Brian De Palma and Al Pacino's 1983 crime drama Scarface.
09:44Not only is the game's Malibu Club a near one-to-one replica of the same location in the film,
09:50but Tommy's mansion at the end of the game is a perfect recreation of Tony Montana's mansion from the end
09:55of the movie,
09:55complete with the grand staircase leading up to the main office and naturally an epic shootout in its halls by
10:01the game's end,
10:02once again mirroring the film.
10:04Say hello to my little friend!
10:10Glitched.
10:11Go get some sleep.
10:13What are you gonna do?
10:14I'll drop by your office tomorrow and we can start sorting this mess out.
10:17Rockstar has had a rocky history with PC ports of their titles over the years,
10:21but even by their own standards, GTA Vice City is their glitchiest port by far.
10:27Using certain exploits, more than 50% of the entire game can be completely skipped,
10:32and some properties can even be acquired for free due to the game's numerous and varied glitches.
10:37These glitches have led to major exploits within the speedrunning community as well,
10:41with the current world record speedrun in the Any Percentage category
10:45coming in at just over 8 minutes for a game that would typically take well over a dozen hours to
10:51complete.
10:51Oh my god, Tommy, what happened?
10:54What does it look like?
10:56It looks like you ruined your suit, and Tommy, that was a beautiful suit!
11:00Tommy, what on earth happened?
11:03Starfish Beach Ball
11:04Grand Theft Auto Vice City marked the beginning of Rockstar,
11:07offering players a myriad of extracurricular activities to partake in their open world sandbox,
11:12but there's one so hidden, most players didn't even know it was in the game.
11:16If you go to one of the pools on Starfish Island, you'll find a beach ball nearby.
11:21If you're able to get the ball airborne through various means, a counter will pop up on the screen.
11:26The aim of the game is to keep the ball in the air for as long as possible,
11:29with the counter resetting once the ball hits the ground.
11:32Beach ball keepy-uppy, if you will.
11:34There's no point to it, and there's no indicator the game even exists,
11:37but it's a fun little challenge for those who manage to find it.
11:40Periscope Down
11:41Just because you can't jump in the water for a quick swim,
11:44doesn't mean Rockstar didn't hide quite a few secrets beneath the water surrounding Vice City.
11:49Near North Point Mall, players can find the wreckage of a submarine just below the water's surface.
11:54While its purpose is unknown, it appears to be guarding a different shipwreck,
11:58or might have been the reason for its destruction.
12:00Either way, no one is quite sure why it's there beyond a fun easter egg,
12:04and it's just as mysterious as the other submarine that can be found in the Vice City junkyard.
12:09There are actually two other mysterious shipwrecks that can also be found,
12:13one off the southern coast of the docks,
12:15and another which appears to have run aground near Prawn Island.
12:18One small step.
12:20Cut!
12:21Who is this idiot?
12:22You!
12:23You!
12:23Why are you in my space?
12:25Why?
12:25What is all this crap?
12:27Aliens!
12:27Fishing poles!
12:28In one of the longest-running conspiracy theories of our time,
12:32Rockstar appears to have thrown more fuel on the fire with the discovery of this set in GTA Vice City.
12:38While the moon landing and the first spacewalk of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong is the stuff of legend,
12:43many don't believe we've ever made it to the moon,
12:46especially with the technology we had over a half a century ago.
12:49To that end, many believe the moon landing was faked and directed by renowned filmmaker Stanley Kubrick
12:55on a soundstage after his groundbreaking work on 2001 A Space Odyssey.
13:00While exploring Prawn Island, players can find a mock-up of the moon landing stage
13:04complete with replicas of the Apollo 11 moon lander
13:07and the infamous shot of the Earth in the background.
13:13Throwing Shade.
13:14Developer Reflections didn't take too kindly to Rockstar stealing their open-world thunder
13:19with Grand Theft Auto 3, overshadowing their Driver series,
13:22and they made their grievances known with continued jabs at the GTA series.
13:27While many of these are just spiteful, one of the more clever ones comes in Driver 3.
13:31Scattered around the city, players can find and hunt down Timmy Vermicelli,
13:36a random NPC complete with Tommy Versetti's traditional Hawaiian shirt.
13:40However, Timmy has comically oversized hands
13:43and most notably wears a pair of water wings,
13:46poking fun at the fact that Tommy can't swim in GTA Vice City.
13:50Too bad the rest of Driver 3 isn't this clever.
13:53Poster parodies.
13:54Tommy, it's Ricardo Diaz.
13:56I want to thank you for looking out for me, my man.
13:59Claude may have launched the GTA series into 3D only a year earlier,
14:03but he didn't truly get his start in crime until GTA San Andreas a couple years later.
14:08GTA timelines are weird.
14:09However, Rockstar didn't forget to show a little love for our favorite silent hero in Vice City.
14:14In Tommy's Ocean View hotel suite, players can find a few posters on the wall,
14:19but one stands out.
14:20It's hard to make out because of the comic book style of the poster,
14:23but that's GTA 3's boy Claude recreating one of their early promo screenshots for the game prior to release.
14:29There's also a couple others, which are clearly porn parodies of Steven Spielberg's classics Jaws
14:35and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
14:37I'll be in touch.
14:43You kill him, we grill him.
14:51In Little Haiti, if you somehow manage to find yourself outside Romero's funeral home
14:56and make your way around back, you'll find multiple graves,
14:59including one that's clearly been freshly dug up.
15:02While the initial thought might be simply grave robbers,
15:05taking a stroll down the street reveals an even darker secret.
15:08Just down the block is Carnicero Romero's family butchers,
15:12which seems innocent enough until you look at the window display case.
15:15Inside, you can clearly see what are human remains alongside a couple pig carcasses,
15:20alluding to the fact that the butcher gets most of their meat from the funeral home,
15:25which is run by the butcher's brother.
15:26Family business indeed.
15:35Sleeping with the Fishes
15:36Given GTA Vice City released in the early days of internet forums,
15:40it was all too easy to spread rumors about games that many people, unable to confirm,
15:44would easily believe without question.
15:46However, one of these, a rumor about a man with cement shoes floating in the waters of Vice City,
15:52turned out to be true.
15:53In fact, there are two of them.
15:55In the rivers near Washington Beach and between Leaf Links and downtown,
15:59two heavyset men in just their underwear can be seen floating just below the surface,
16:04held down by the weight of a pair of cement shoes.
16:07The myth of cement shoes as a tactic of mafia assassination
16:10began at the height of the mafia's power back in the 1930s,
16:13although no real cases of its use have ever been discovered.
16:17Which is exactly what the mafia would have wanted.
16:20Vice City Reservoir
16:21Didn't think they'd ever let him out.
16:23He kept his head down. Helps people forget.
16:25People will remember soon enough.
16:26When they see him walking down the streets of their neighborhoods,
16:29it will be bad for business.
16:31While GTA Vice City takes clear inspiration from Miami Vice and Scarface,
16:35there is another classic crime drama that heavily inspired the game's main character.
16:39Not only is Tommy's character modeled after Michael Madsen's character Mr. Blonde
16:44in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs,
16:46but even his backstory is nearly identical with Mr. Blonde,
16:49who has just been released from prison for refusing to flip on his mob family,
16:53with Tommy's introduction at the start of the game mirroring the same setup.
16:56Tommy even performs missions for a character simply referred to as Mr. Black,
17:01which is another clear nod to Tarantino's classic.
17:03Mr. Teal, you have been eradicating those out-of-towners was invaluable to business.
17:09I have more work for you, with a more and fun approach.
17:13Bathroom Graffiti
17:14The nods to classic films keep coming,
17:16and this one is nearly impossible to mistake for anything other than what it is.
17:20Near the pay-and-spray in Ocean Beach,
17:22players can find one of the only interable locations in the game,
17:26specifically, Apartment 3C.
17:28Inside, they'll find a nearly identical setup to the same room in Al Pacino's Scarface,
17:33and upon further inspection, the influences become even more obvious.
17:37In the bathroom, the walls have been sprayed with blood,
17:40and nearby is a chainsaw the player can pick up.
17:42This is clearly the aftermath of a reenactment of the horrific scene in the film,
17:47in which Tony's partner Angel is dismembered by the Colombians with said chainsaw.
17:51Horrible stuff, but undeniably memorable.
17:54Eliminating the competition.
17:56The European gangplans to hit the bunk in Vice City.
17:59I am so yes, would rather it didn't happen.
18:01Driver 3 isn't the only one who can throw some shade at their competitors.
18:05In GTA Vice City, Tommy can undertake a mission from Mr. Black
18:08that has him eliminating some European bank robbers before their job gets underway.
18:13The targets are Dick Tanner from the Driver series,
18:16Mike Griffin, a reference to Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter,
18:19Nick Kong, a stand-in for Nick Kang from True Crime Streets of LA,
18:23and finally, Marcus Hammond, Franco Carter, and Charles Dillson,
18:27all based on characters from the Getaway series.
18:29You really need to have played, or at least been familiar with these games to get the references,
18:34but it's still a fun jab at the copycats nonetheless.
18:36Each member of the gang has a caller while they are here in Vice City.
18:40Some have menial jobs, but if they're on location,
18:43each charges and they likely thereabouts are taped under the phone.
18:47Star Power.
18:48Listen to me.
18:49I'm missing 20 keys and a lot of cash.
18:51Truck fight?
18:51It's a mod's kind.
18:53What do you know about?
18:54The GTA series is renowned for their celebrity actors voicing roles in their games,
18:59and while GTA 3 had its fair share of big names such as Joe Pantoliano, Michael Madsen, and Michael Rappaport,
19:06Ray Liotta bringing Tommy Brissetti to life in GTA Vice City was a huge get for Rockstar.
19:12Revered for his career in film, particularly Goodfellas,
19:15Liotta won multiple awards for his performance,
19:17and Rockstar even included homages to some of Liotta's films with missions such as Copland and No Escape
19:23being direct references to his filmography.
19:25Without Ray Liotta, we likely wouldn't have gotten Samuel L. Jackson
19:29bringing one of the series' best antagonists to life with Officer Tenpenny in GTA San Andreas.
19:34We're gonna be making some changes around here and start making some real money.
19:38Actually, have you ever thought about, um...
19:40First, we're gonna need some good-looking brawls.
19:42Yeah, girls are fine, but you...
19:44Wow!
19:44The Easter Egg.
19:45This one is pretty well-known today, but it's still a cool addition, so we're including it.
19:50Nearly every video game has some kind of hidden secret or Easter egg in it,
19:55but very few can claim to have an actual Easter egg in their game.
19:59By going into the Vice City News building, you'll be transported to the roof,
20:02and after climbing the platform to the helicopter pad, jump to the building next door,
20:07particularly the window directly next to the landing light,
20:10and you'll clip through the wall to the room inside.
20:12Once inside, you'll find a giant chocolate egg proudly displayed in the center of the room
20:17with the message, Happy Easter, written on the shelf.
20:20Happy Hour.
20:21Well, this is Vice City, man. What's the problem?
20:23Love juice, man.
20:24We need love juice, man, can't we?
20:27Love juice?
20:28Rockstar loves to push the boundaries of what can get past the censors,
20:31and this is a prime example of one that clearly got overlooked.
20:35When the in-game clock hits 2300 hours, the lights of the hotel next to Club Malibu turn on.
20:41What makes this such a risque inclusion is the lights very clearly form the shape
20:46of a particular part of the male anatomy.
20:48What's more, is at the same time the lights turn on,
20:51the fountain at the top of the building also erupts every 15 seconds.
20:56The implication is very clear here, I don't think I need to say any more,
21:00but man, you gotta appreciate the stamina to go every 15 seconds.
21:05To love rocket thing, can!
21:07Oi! Yeah, love rocket thing, right?
21:09Which detail about GTA Vice City did you not know that you do now?
