00:00Ugh! Great, now I have nothing to play except the games I bought yesterday, and I'm totally sick of them!
00:05Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're looking back at the licensed games of the good old days,
00:11and realizing we didn't have it as bad as we thought.
00:14I don't know what's weird, that this guy can somehow come back from the dead, or that they gave him
00:18a TV show.
00:19Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:24videos.
00:26Family Guy, back to the multiverse.
00:29All right, fellas, there's a sniper rifle waiting for you in the top floor of the book depository.
00:34Oh, okay, I see what we're doing here.
00:36Now, this one might seem like an odd choice, because at first glance, back to the multiverse doesn't look like
00:42a good game, and that's true.
00:45But, it is still a fun time with some of the craziest scenarios that could only be imagined by the
00:50same people who created the equally crazy series.
00:53The controls are serviceable, and the character models do a decent job recreating their respective characters in video game form,
01:00complete with the series' original voice cast.
01:03But, it's the show's classic sense of humor that keeps you playing.
01:07Back to the multiverse feels like a lost episode of the series,
01:10and while it's not perfect, it's worthy of a playthrough simply for the gags, humor, and so-bad-it's-good
01:16kind of playthrough,
01:17we used to enjoy renting games from Blockbuster over the weekend.
01:21It's not a game that will stick with you long past the credits, but you'll have a fun time while
01:25you're playing.
01:32The Grinch.
01:34We're ready. Let's creep down to who will.
01:38Let the main begin!
01:41Like we said, not all of these are Hall of Fame additions,
01:44but they are still at least a good time, and that's all you could really ask for from a licensed
01:49game.
01:50Adapting Jim Carrey's classic Grinch,
01:52players need to reclaim the Grinch's plans to steal Christmas from the Who's
01:56by finding the blueprints and essentially tormenting the Who's in various ways while doing it.
02:01The graphics still hold up surprisingly well for a PS1 game,
02:04as do the controls, and some of the objectives are truly inventive,
02:08as are the Grinch's numerous gadgets.
02:10The game is a short experience, and besides some frustrating jumps and puzzles,
02:15which were standard for the time,
02:16terrorizing Whoville as the Grinch will make your heart grow three sizes by the time credits roll.
02:22Merry Christmas, Who's! I'm so sorry to have stolen Christmas!
02:27Please forgive me!
02:30The Mummy Demastered.
02:38It's not often that the video game adaptations far outshine their source material,
02:43but when the license you're based on is Tom Cruise's The Mummy movie,
02:47it's not that hard to do better.
02:49Completely ignoring the movie in everything but the basic setup,
02:52players are dropped into a pixelated Metroidvania with roguelike elements
02:56as a nameless soldier who is fighting to survive against The Mummy's, Omnet's evil, and resurrected forces.
03:02The gameplay is impeccably precise, as you'd expect from a Metroidvania,
03:07but adds extra elements that keep the experience intense,
03:10such as facing off against a zombified version of yourself after death to reclaim your weapons and gear.
03:16While the movie might have been a dud,
03:18the game is a thoroughly enjoyable experience that was overlooked due to the apocalyptic disaster of a film.
03:34Looney Tunes Sheep Raider
03:36Listen, bub, all you gotta do is relax and play the game.
03:40I gotta use this gig to catapult me to super stardom!
03:44Looney Tunes had a renaissance of video game adaptations on the PS1,
03:49and with such an abundance of games to choose from,
03:52one of the best managed to get overlooked in The Deluge.
03:55Adapting the classic episodes of Sam's Sheepdog and Ralph's Wolf
03:59and Ralph's constant attempts to steal his next meal from Sam's flock.
04:03The game makes clever use of not only the stealth aspect of Ralph's missions,
04:07but also adds puzzle elements to the typical absurdity of the many ACME products Ralph uses throughout the game.
04:13Ralph can also combine various pieces of equipment to distract Sam and sneak the sheep out of the herd.
04:19The game perfectly recaptures the look and humor of the beloved shorts in its numerous levels and character designs.
04:26With so few new Looney Tunes games releasing in the modern era,
04:29we need to be more appreciative of how good we used to have it.
04:40Cars 2, the video game.
04:42Another game that far surpassed its source material,
04:45the love players have for Cars 2 is unlike any other licensed video game adaptation.
04:50Taking place after the events of the film,
04:52the Cars 2 video game ditches the typical simulation racing for something more akin to a kart racer,
04:57complete with power-ups, different classes of racers, and a staggering amount of unlockable content.
05:03Cars 2 expands on the typical kart racer even further by giving players more variety than your typical race.
05:09The tracks are incredibly varied and offer plenty of shortcuts,
05:12which you're going to need because the game offers a pretty decent amount of challenge,
05:16forcing players to think strategically about their weapons and boost usage.
05:21The devs easily could have just focused on a simple racer to capitalize off the name recognition,
05:26but Cars 2 is a surprisingly deep and enjoyable kart racer designed especially for fans of the films.
05:32Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
05:33There's a vampire nest within and you must proceed with caution.
05:40Caution. My middle name. Only, not really.
05:44Gonna be honest, a lot of you might not even know what Buffy the Vampire Slayer even is,
05:48but in the late 90s, Sarah Michelle Gellar had young audiences locked in on Tuesday nights.
05:54Naturally, given the series' popularity, a video game adaptation was inevitable.
05:59But releasing around the final season of the show, and having OG Xbox exclusivity,
06:05even many diehard fans miss this one.
06:07Borrowing heavily from the Tomb Raider series,
06:10Buffy needs to find her friends and solve numerous puzzles,
06:13all while battling vampires and other creatures as a new ancient evil attempts to take over the world,
06:18starting with Sunnydale.
06:20The combat is impactful and satisfying,
06:23making full use of Buffy's martial art abilities and other upgradable equipment.
06:27Fans of the Tomb Raider-style adventure games of previous generations
06:31are missing out on one of the best in the genre,
06:33and oddly enough, it came from a TV adaptation.
06:37Do not take this lightly.
06:38You'll have to be at the top of your game when you face them.
06:41Sticking to the metaphor, Giles?
06:43Don't worry. In this game, I'm in a league of my own.
06:46The Simpsons Game.
06:48Whoa! I'm in this game!
06:50I wonder what my moves are.
06:51Jumping, floating. Oh man, I gotta try this!
06:54The Simpsons have a gaming library other licensed properties could only dream about,
06:59but we could only say a small handful of them are actually worth playing.
07:03By far one of the best adaptations of The Simpsons has to be their self-titled game.
07:08Written by the creators with the entire voice cast returning,
07:11letting the family break the fourth wall and discover their characters inside a game
07:15is peak Simpsons material.
07:17Each member of the family gets their own dedicated levels with different mechanics,
07:21lampooning every trope of the genres they're spoofing.
07:25Animations and the cel-shaded look of the characters are still top-notch,
07:28and the game's hilarious script nails the aesthetic of The Simpsons
07:32and what has made the series so popular for so long.
07:35For fans of The Simpsons, outside of Hit and Run,
07:38this is the closest you can get to visiting Springfield for yourself.
07:42Hey, thanks for helping us save our 8-bit selves.
07:45I had to do so many double jumps, I'm really tired.
07:47DuckTales Remastered
07:49Yeah, me money!
07:51Hey, don't forget about me, Uncle Scrooge!
07:55Eh? Oh, oh, oh, don't worry, lad, I'll save you!
07:59Remaking a classic is always a tightrope walk.
08:03How much do you change to update the game without alienating the core audience
08:06that made the original such a classic?
08:09DuckTales Remastered manages the impossible,
08:11and not only updates the graphics,
08:13but added additional content expanding on the base game.
08:17And even voice acting from the cast of the original DuckTales series,
08:21technically making it more of a remake than a remaster.
08:23The core gameplay remains incredibly solid,
08:26and thankfully the game's controls keep Scrooge bouncing across the screen
08:29with perfect precision platforming.
08:31DuckTales Remastered proves you don't need to completely rebuild the core game from scratch,
08:36and can simply improve on what's already there,
08:38making it playable for an entire new generation of gamers to enjoy.
08:42I'm in a generous mood today.
08:44In fact, each of you can even get a cone with ice cream in it!
08:49Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster
08:52Isn't that your grandson?
08:54Huh?
08:57Well, father!
08:59Look out!
09:02I'm willing to bet even the biggest Jackie Chan fans forgot this game even existed.
09:07Playing like one of his many films in the 90s,
09:09in particular Rumble in the Bronx,
09:11Jackie navigates numerous levels beating up endless waves of baddies
09:15along the way to rescue his grandfather.
09:17The gameplay itself might not have innovated on the genre,
09:21but for a PS1 game,
09:22it's still impressive how close Jackie's model in-game
09:25is to his real-world movements and fighting style.
09:28Stuntmaster didn't exactly make much of an impact during its release,
09:32but is a great companion piece to a weekend of Jackie's greatest hits,
09:36and a simple fun experience that will make you feel like a kid again
09:38watching one of his films again for the first time.
09:41You hold on to it, great son.
09:49Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions
09:58When most people think of Spider-Man video games,
10:01most will either likely think of the movie tie-in with Spider-Man 2
10:04that revolutionized the swinging mechanics,
10:07or Insomniac's 2018 Spider-Man game.
10:09And while both of those are stellar Spidey adventures,
10:12one, along with many others that gets overlooked,
10:15is Shattered Dimensions.
10:16Not only was this a great web-slinging game,
10:19but it also had four different variations of Spider-Man,
10:22each with their own unique levels,
10:24bosses, abilities, and even graphical style.
10:27The overarching narrative brought all the Spideys together,
10:30and their crossover felt like something lifted
10:32straight off the pages of a graphic novel.
10:34It might be a bit more linear than some of the Wallcrawler's other outings,
10:38but this worked in the game's favor,
10:40constructing a tightly woven narrative
10:41that keeps the game moving at a brisk pace
10:44and didn't pad out its runtime.
10:45Bonus points to Shattered Dimensions
10:47for inspiring the Spider-Verse comic and films.
10:50No matter what corner of the cosmos you may find yourself in,
10:54there'll always be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man
10:58to save the day.
11:00Adventure Time, The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom.
11:02Do you even remember the name of the kingdom we're in?
11:05Come to think of it, no!
11:07Wait, I don't think it had one.
11:09Did it?
11:10Like many licensed adaptations,
11:12Adventure Time has its fair share of copycat games,
11:14but one that managed to do the formula right
11:17and fit in perfectly with the property
11:19was The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom.
11:21Rather than going for a traditional hack-and-slash style game,
11:24Nameless Kingdom went retro
11:26and adopted the style of The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past,
11:30and unsurprisingly, it worked in the game's favor.
11:32And when we say adopt,
11:34we mean copied almost one-to-one,
11:37with explodable walls, gadgets, and dungeon crawling.
11:40However, the Adventure Time aesthetic makes this homage
11:43endearing and charming,
11:44rather than a blatant rip-off of the formula.
11:47The script is just as chaotic and quirky as the series,
11:50and any new adventure to an unexplored area of Ooo
11:53with Finn and Jake is a fun time,
11:55especially for fans of the series.
11:57Long story short,
11:59some really dark junk would start happening,
12:01so it's a good thing you didn't choose her.
12:03Heh heh, we wouldn't dream of it, PB!
12:0650 Cent, Blood on the Sand.
12:08You still owe me.
12:09If I don't get that skull,
12:10I'm gonna collect from you personally.
12:11With interest, you understand?
12:13We can almost guarantee no one expected 50 Cent
12:16to get his own game, let alone two.
12:18And while the first game Bulletproof was serviceable at best,
12:22the second, Blood on the Sand, is a damn good time.
12:25Everything about the game is over-the-top absurdity.
12:28From the premise of 50 trying to reclaim a jewel-encrusted skull,
12:32to the kill streak counter and executions,
12:34Blood on the Sand embraces its video-gameness
12:37and makes the experience so much more enjoyable.
12:39There's a dedicated swear button to taunt your enemies,
12:42which is even upgradable.
12:44The gameplay might be your typical third-person cover shooter,
12:47a la Gears of War,
12:48but the cover mechanics and gunplay are snappy and responsive,
12:52meaning you'll be more focused on fighting the endless waves
12:54of surprisingly competent enemies,
12:56rather than the game itself.
12:58This is a game that shouldn't exist,
13:00let alone be as fun as it is.
13:03I see you haters, that's them eyes.
13:06Yeah, that's them eyes.
13:10Transformers, War for Cybertron, and Fall of Cybertron.
13:14For generations it has been a peaceful world,
13:18until pride and a lust for power divided us.
13:23Now we fight enemies who were once our brothers.
13:29Transformers is a property that has somehow managed to maintain its popularity for decades,
13:34but somehow has only a handful of video games under its name.
13:38Arguably, two of the best we as fans have ever received
13:41have to be War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron.
13:44Both games act as prequels to the Autobot and Decepticon War making its way to Earth,
13:49detailing the collapse of Cybertron during the conflict.
13:52Gameplay is broken up to let players experience the war from both sides
13:56and take control of some of the best and most popular Autobots and Decepticons.
14:01While a traditional third-person shooter during combat,
14:03players can transform their character at the push of a button,
14:07complete with the iconic transforming sound effect.
14:09Both games have remained some of the best Transformers games full stop,
14:13and considering we haven't received any major Transformers games since,
14:17they'll likely remain that way.
14:21Make it happen
14:23Toy Story 3
14:25Evil Dr. Porkchop
14:27That's Mr. Evil Dr. Porkchop to you,
14:30and I've got a score to set it with you, Sheriff Woody.
14:34As one of the last true Disney tie-in games,
14:37Toy Story 3 perfectly recaptured the spirit of the movie
14:40and gave us another enjoyable adventure with our favorite toys.
14:43While the base game follows the same plot as the film,
14:46full of all the platforming and numerous game mechanics and modes to keep gameplay interesting,
14:51the true experience is in the game's Toy Box mode.
14:54Toy Box features a semi-open-world western town in the style of Woody's Roundup,
14:59and features side quests from numerous toys,
15:01and players can even customize the town.
15:04Just like the movie,
15:05Toy Story 3 has enough content, humor, and heart to appeal to both kids and adults
15:09who grew up with Andy and his toys,
15:11and is worth one last playtime together for anyone who misses the good old days.
15:16A land where food eats people!
15:19Food eats people?
15:20He's on a roll!
15:21It was a full moon, and the muffins were getting restless.
15:24They had already eaten all the townsfolk,
15:26but were still hungry for more!
15:29Ghostbusters the Video Game
15:30Hey, if you're gonna burn any tissue, do it to the new kid.
15:33You can't use Ray.
15:34Our mortgage is in his name.
15:36I guess he's right.
15:38What's your name again, kid?
15:40No names, Ray.
15:42I don't want to get too attached to this kid.
15:44You know, just in case.
15:45Somehow, despite the series' pop culture icon status,
15:49Ghostbusters have had very few video game adaptations.
15:52Drafting players in as the newest Ghostbusters recruit,
15:55you join the team of Ghostbusters,
15:57all voiced by the original cast,
15:59to take on the many spooky spectral apparitions haunting New York,
16:03but also try out the team's newest and most dangerous equipment.
16:06The script is as sharp as you'd expect with many laugh-out-loud moments,
16:10but the gameplay itself is incredibly satisfying
16:13thanks to the impressive particle effects from your proton pack,
16:16but also the sheer destructibility of the environment.
16:19With a script penned by Ghostbusters creators Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis,
16:24Ghostbusters the Video Game
16:25is not only the best Ghostbusters video game ever made,
16:28but also the third film fans always wanted.
16:31I always knew that Peck was a pencil-neck bureaucratic prick,
16:35but I never pegged him as an evil occultist.
16:38Captain America Super Soldier.
16:46Fall back, soldier. I'll take it from here.
16:49During Phase 1 of the MCU,
16:51every major character got their own tie-in game with the release of their movie.
16:55And while most of them were as generic as you'd expect,
16:58Captain America Super Soldier was by far the best of the budding Avengers.
17:03Adapting the tried-and-true Batman-Arkham-style combat to Cap,
17:07and including his shield as a projectile that can not only bounce off enemies,
17:11but solve puzzles as well,
17:13Cap's fight against Hydra and the Red Skull was a far better experience than you'd expect.
17:18While the game follows the film's plot as you'd expect,
17:21the moment-to-moment gameplay is where the game finds its groove.
17:24Slamming Cap's shield into Hydra's soldiers and sending it ricocheting around the room
17:28is ridiculously entertaining and never gets old for the game's entire runtime.
17:33The MCU games might have been mostly duds,
17:36but this Super Soldier could do this all day.
17:39Well done, Rogers.
17:40Well done.
17:41Never doubted for a second.
17:43You did it, Captain.
17:44Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy.
17:47Connor doesn't operate alone.
17:48He likes to work with local talent,
17:50so they'll be gunning for you as well.
17:52Watch him back.
17:55Given the massive success of the movies
17:57and the clear video game tropes of the source material,
18:00government conspiracy, amnesiac super soldier, car chases, and hand-to-hand combat,
18:04it's shocking Jason Bourne only got one video game adaptation.
18:08While the game's narrative tries to balance both the film and the novels to mixed results,
18:13the game's numerous gameplay styles are much more enjoyable.
18:16Close-quarters combat feels incredibly satisfying,
18:19even if you can't use many of the environmental elements of the films
18:22and the use of Jason's heightened sensives
18:24gives the experience a Batman-style investigative quality.
18:28While not as much fun as the films it's based on,
18:30The Bourne Conspiracy is still a fun time for a weekend
18:33and the perfect companion to a Bourne movie marathon
18:36to keep your adrenaline rush going for a few more hours.
18:50Wanted Weapons of Fate.
18:51Three months ago, if I'd been awakened by a couple of cops rummaging through my place,
18:55I'd have been pissing myself and trying not to let them see me cry,
18:58but, uh, well, a lot gonna happen in a short period of time.
19:02Given nearly every aspect of The Wanted movie already feels like a video game,
19:06it's only fitting it got an adaptation itself.
19:09Continuing after the events of the film,
19:11players not only finally get Wesley's iconic assassin outfit,
19:15but even the ability to curve bullets like in the film.
19:17The cover-based shooting is perfectly responsive,
19:20and curving a bullet to hit an enemy hiding behind cover
19:23is incredibly fun and satisfying every single time.
19:26The game and its world lean more closely to the source material of the graphic novel,
19:31and naturally, it gets a bit more violent and crude than its film counterpart,
19:35but that only adds to the game's overall appeal.
19:38However, the game is incredibly linear,
19:40which leaves little room for replayability,
19:41but you're unlikely to care much about the game's length or even replaying it
19:46when you keep hearing the disembodied screams of enemies
19:49you manage to snipe behind their fortified cover.
19:51But I do know what I am.
19:54I'm an asshole with a gun and a cool suit.
20:00A, uh, very cool suit.
20:03Stranglehold.
20:11Another official sequel to the film it's based on,
20:14Stranglehold follows Inspector Tequila once again
20:17waging a one-man army against the criminal underworld.
20:20While the plot itself is your basic cop thriller,
20:23the gameplay features some of the most creative takedowns
20:25and interactions we've ever experienced in a video game.
20:29Whether it's riding a trolley cart while shooting bad guys,
20:32slow-mo jumping off balconies while shooting bad guys,
20:34or swinging off a chandelier while shooting at bad guys,
20:37there's seemingly no end to the inventive ways you can shoot at bad guys.
20:41With both Chao Young-Fat reprising his role
20:44and John Woo having direct creative control,
20:47Stranglehold is everything a video game adaptation should be.
20:50It honors the source material while building on it in meaningful ways
20:54and gives players enough freedom to create their own cinematic moments
20:57with the core gameplay loop remaining relentlessly entertaining.
21:08X-Men Origins Wolverine
21:17Adapting Wolverine to a video game is no easy task,
21:21but to coincide with the release of The Mutant's first standalone film,
21:25we got Origins Wolverine,
21:27and is hands down the best video game version of Wolverine, period.
21:31Not only does the game capture the sheer brutality of Wolverine in combat,
21:35something the films have often had to shy away from,
21:38but also his regenerative healing factor.
21:40After ripping enemies often limb from limb,
21:43Wolverine's wounds will heal in real time,
21:46starting all the way from bone to muscle and finally flesh.
21:49The entire process is mesmerizing to watch
21:52and perfectly captures the feel of Wolverine's raw brutality from the comic books,
21:57especially with Hugh Jackman once again giving his all in his performance.
22:01The game far outshines the film it's based on
22:04and set a benchmark for Wolverine adaptations
22:06that no one has even attempted to compete with so far.
22:10That doesn't mean giving up.
22:12This world may be broken.
22:15I've got just the tools to fix it.
