00:08Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're counting down our picks for the 10 hardest movie tie-in
00:13video games that require you to get good if you want to beat them.
00:24Before we begin we publish new content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell
00:28to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
00:40Some games are hard because they require skill and precision, others are hard because of mind-bending
00:47puzzles, and others like Who Framed Roger Rabbit are hard because they are just downright confusing
00:52to understand. Heck, even after recording this very footage that you're seeing for this entry,
00:57I honestly still have no idea what's actually going on here, since nothing seems to ever make
01:03sense in this game. Now most of this comes down to the game's complete lack of guidance,
01:08in tandem with cryptic objectives as you explore Toontown. One moment you'll be finding the correct
01:13punchline to a joke, another moment sees you finding clues and pertinent items, other moments see you
01:19pummeling goons in the face. Simply put, Who Framed Roger Rabbit is just one of those old-school video
01:25games that intends for you to find the right path forward, but never actually gives you any solid
01:30way to do that apart from loads of trial and error.
01:39The Terminator.
01:46Now, at first glance, you'd be easily forgiven for thinking you have stumbled across a sort of
01:52knockoff Contra game. The Terminator's run and gun action is essentially a carbon copy of older Contra
01:57titles, albeit quite a bit less polished or responsive. Still, for fans of the movie out
02:02there, it provides plenty of fun and challenge. This is just one of those games that feels like
02:07an arcade title through and through, where precision with your shots and pinpoint accuracy with your
02:12jumps is required if you hope to even make it through the dreary movie inspired stages. Plus, each level
02:19here is so dark that it's often just hard to figure out how to get from point A to point
02:23B.
02:30Ghostbusters.
02:38Apart from looking like the Ghostbusters themselves, in this game just wandered off the set of something
02:43like Saving Private Ryan, it's surprising just how challenging this NES game is. Sort of like who
02:50framed Roger Rabbit in a previous entry, Ghostbusters is confusing at the best of times and downright
02:56impossible to understand at the worst of times. Quickly swapping between a pseudo strategy sort of
03:02experience, I guess, on a grid layout city map, to in-vehicle transition sections, to hoovering up ghosts
03:09with a plethora of purchasable ghost equipment. Ghostbusters is just all over the place in all
03:14honesty, never quite feeling cohesive. This in turn makes it an uber challenging game to contend with,
03:21all culminating in a final showdown that truly takes the ectoplasmic kick.
03:39R&E is back added in the True Lies Genesis video game adaptation, a surprisingly gruesome game that
03:45isn't for the faint of heart, both in terms of content and sheer difficulty. The best word to sum
03:51this game as a whole would be frenetic. The frenetic action in this game is just relentless,
03:56with death always just around the next corner. Bullets fly everywhere, with enemies creeping just
04:01beyond what you can see in any given level. R&E does indeed have plenty of firepower at his disposal,
04:07but I mean good luck at trying to aim successfully with this game's super stiff and cumbersome controls.
04:12Sure, you can get the hang of it, but it never quite feels natural. Throw in friendly fire when allies
04:17are present, some maze-like stage layouts, and brutal boss fights, and yeah it's pretty darn clear,
04:23True Lies isn't going to take it easy on you.
04:33Cliffhanger
04:40I guess it should come as no surprise really, that a Sylvester Stallone action-heavy film like
04:45Cliffhanger would have a video game adaptation. Playing out like a clone of something like Final
04:50Fight or Streets of Rage, albeit less engaging and responsive than those titles, Cliffhanger punches
04:56well above its weight when it comes to overall game difficulty. Seriously, despite being a really,
05:01really short game, it's a doozy to contend with. It's just a wildly inconsistent game, with random
05:07platforming sections, climbing segments that infuse combat, and so much more. It's a game where enemies
05:13just spam you, as Gabe, over and over again, never relenting. Sure, you do of course have plenty of
05:19power, but it never feels like enough given the unfair and unforgiving arcade tendencies of this game.
05:31Enter the Matrix.
05:40Now, it was a toss up between this game and Path of Neo, for which one is considered to be
05:45harder
05:45overall. We of course opted on Enter the Matrix, since it just inches out in terms of its challenging
05:51gameplay, especially when it comes to two different character campaigns, relentless enemy AI,
05:57labyrinthian level layouts that often just have you running in circles, and some wonky vehicle sections
06:02that really aren't all that easy to control. Now, don't get us wrong, it is a fun game to play,
06:07especially if you are a fan of the Matrix movies, but you'll be up to your ears in hectic firefights,
06:12tricky platforming, and unwieldy slow-mo focus time moments.
06:22Aladdin.
06:29Now, we are specifically talking about the Game Boy version of Aladdin for this list. While the
06:34Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis versions do of course have some difficult areas, there's no two
06:39ways about it that the Game Boy counterpart is easily the harder one overall. Did some of these
06:44levels really have to go this hard? Levels such as the Cave of Wonders, especially the Magic Carpet
06:50Escape sections, inside the Genie's Lamp, and more, prove that Aladdin doesn't hold back punches when
06:55it comes to its pixel-perfect precision platforming. Heck, even some of the opening parts in Agrabah
07:01can make you pull your hair out in frustration. A lot of this, of course, comes down to the smaller
07:06screen space for the Game Boy, limited visibility, and less responsive controls when compared to its
07:11console counterparts. It all just takes a bit more finesse if you hope to beat this handheld Disney gem.
07:25Back to the Future Part 2 and 3
07:35I don't think anyone back in 1990 would have thought that a platforming game based on the Back
07:41to the Future movies would be all that tough. However, Part 2 and 3 prove fans of the films wrong,
07:46because this game is downright brutal. Most of the challenge in this game comes from aimlessly
07:51wandering around the sprawling levels, which do recycle quite often, which leads to confusion and
07:56tedium as you never quite know where to go next. It's not just a simple left-to-right case here,
08:02like many other platformers. You are actually meant to replay areas over and over in order to find
08:07specific points of interest, items, and objectives. But again, it's never clear on why you are doing it,
08:12and where you should actually go. Add in some cheap deaths, tricky enemy placement,
08:17and some awkward controls, and you have a recipe for a game that's just better left in the past.
08:29Batman Forever
08:37Is it just me, or did anyone else forget how goofy the Batman Forever movie tie-in game truly is?
08:44Tough as nails? Heck yes. But undeniably goofy to witness, without a doubt. There's just this sort of
08:50uncanniness with the caped crusader's walking animation, like he's doing the first part of an
08:55epic dance battle. Then there's the fact that you can spam the ground kick over and over on certain
09:00enemies. And then, well, there's the goofy enemies themselves. What a ragtag bunch, am I right?
09:06But we aren't here to actually talk about all that goofiness, even though, yeah, I've kind of just
09:10focused a lot on that. Sorry about that. Batman Forever is actually still truly one of the toughest
09:15movie tie-in games around, mostly down to things like stiff and wonky controls for Batman, some
09:22awkward gliding and platforming sections, and combat encounters where enemies just sort of pile
09:27on the pain without much reprieve for Batman.
09:39The Lion King
09:47Hakuna Matata This Is Not. Now, yes, we know, we have featured The Lion King on oodles upon oodles of
09:54hard games lists on mojo plays because, yeah, it's just that hard. It was designed, created,
09:59and developed to be truly punishing for anyone that played it. Levels like Can't Wait to be King
10:04and Be Prepared, amongst many others, prove this very point. For every two steps forward as Simba,
10:10it kind of feels like you go 55 steps backwards. Trial and error doesn't even begin to describe this
10:16game's design philosophies. They're brutal. Even to this very day, even after the deluge of brutal
10:22souls-likes out there, punishing roguelikes, and more, The Lion King still manages to be one of the
10:27most challenging games around, let alone movie tie-ins. Good luck indeed.
10:39So, what did you think of our picks for this list? What are some truly challenging movie tie-in
10:44games that you have played? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
