00:00Skittles? I thought Skittles were only a legend.
00:04Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're showcasing some of the strangest licensed games to ever appear on Nintendo's platforms.
00:12However, to stay Nintendo-centric, we're prioritizing console exclusives for this list.
00:18Wella, wella, wella, oh! Tell me more, tell me more, did you get very far?
00:24Tell me more, tell me more, might the key have a car?
00:27But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the
00:33bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:35The Bachelor, the video game.
00:47The Wii and DS saw a surprising amount of tie-in games for reality TV shows,
00:53but by far the weirdest was a game for ABC's romantic competition show, The Bachelor.
00:59You play as one of the contestants seeking love from the titular Bachelor, or Bachelorette, competing against the computer or
01:06other players.
01:07Only this isn't a dating sim, as you might expect it to be.
01:11No, you earn their love by gaining heart points across a series of minigames.
01:16Why test your compatibility when you could instead show how good you are at off-road RC racing,
01:22catching feathers before they hit the ground, or tracing over random images as fast as you can?
01:27Why was this a game?
01:30Home Improvement, Power Tool Pursuit
01:38If you're wondering how a sitcom could be turned into a video game,
01:42all it takes is having basically nothing in common with the source material.
01:46In the Super Nintendo's Home Improvement, Power Tool Pursuit,
01:49you play as Tim Taylor searching for his missing tools across different sets
01:53at the studio where he films his in-universe TV show, Tool Time.
01:58This leads to him fighting enemies that make absolutely no sense,
02:02like dinosaurs and various monsters.
02:04It's incredibly bizarre to look at this, knowing the show was mostly a family comedy.
02:09That obviously wouldn't transition into a video game, so they had to give Tim something to fight.
02:15Still, undeniably odd.
02:26Yonoid
02:33In 1990, Capcom released the platformer Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru in Japan,
02:39but in North America, we got a re-skinned version called Yonoid, featuring the obscure mascot of Domino's Pizza.
02:47This was during a time when brand mascots starring in their own games,
02:51like Chester Cheetah and 7-Up's Cool Spot, wasn't completely out of the ordinary.
02:56But this was exclusive to the NES.
02:59It follows the Noid out to save the city from an evil doppelganger, rewarded with pizza for doing so.
03:05Which actually doesn't make any sense, as all of the avoid-the-noid ads focused on his hatred of pizza.
03:13As far as gameplay goes, it's your standard platforming fare,
03:16but it's a strange little time capsule of the period.
03:35The 90s were one of basketball's most popular eras.
03:39Several players got their own games, not all of them actually focusing on the sport.
03:44Shaq Fu is undeniably a weird premise for a video game, but it was also on Sega Genesis.
03:50Chaos in the Windy City, however, was a Super Nintendo exclusive and is just as strange.
03:56It follows Michael Jordan trying to rescue his teammates from a mad scientist so that they can play in a
04:02charity game.
04:02He attacks with basketballs, each of which has different abilities, like the explosive bomb ball.
04:08It's not a terrible game, but clearly a really out there use of a license.
04:20Homey Rollers
04:29While it's far from the first video game to be based on a toy line,
04:33Homey Rollers is still one of the weirdest cases we've seen.
04:36If you don't remember, Homey's was a line of collectible figurines you could get in grocery store vending machines.
04:43Created by David Gonzalez, they were of different Mexican-American characters based on people he knew.
04:48In 2008, ten years after their debut, the group got a kart racer on the DS.
04:54While Homey's did get popular, they were never on a level where we'd expect them to get a video game.
05:00Sadly, Homey Rollers was a pretty abysmal flop, with many calling it broken, nor even unfinished.
05:06Little Nicky
05:13It's always a little odd to see a comedy movie turned into a game.
05:18Little Nicky follows the son of Satan trying to stop his brothers from creating hell on Earth.
05:23So, while strange, there are elements that could suit the video game format.
05:28What's weirder is choosing to make it a Game Boy Color exclusive.
05:31It feels like this would have been better suited on PlayStation, known for procuring an older audience.
05:37Not on a Nintendo handheld alongside Mario, Pokemon, and Kirby.
05:41Once again, it's a standard platformer.
05:43Not bad, but still a peculiar license to turn into a game and platform of choice.
05:58Universal Studios Theme Park's Adventure
06:07When it comes to this GameCube exclusive, what makes it weird is that it exists at all.
06:13It could hardly be considered a game, since it's more like an interactable advertisement.
06:18Set inside the Universal Studios Park in Japan, it tasks you with going on rides based on different movies,
06:25like Back to the Future, Jaws, and E.T.
06:28There are a few minigames in between, and if this sounds boring to you,
06:33it's nothing compared to how you earn points in order to actually get on the rides.
06:38Meeting mascots and picking up trash.
06:40In addition to dull gameplay, it was slammed for its dated visuals and frame rate, as well as poor navigation.
06:47Was this supposed to make us want to visit Universal Parks?
07:05The Back to the Future series received some infamously bad games on NES.
07:11But the second movie also got a 16-bit rendition that was never released outside of Japan.
07:17There are a couple of things that make this weird.
07:20One, that it never released in North America, where the movies were undoubtedly more popular.
07:26Two, that the developers skipped the first movie and went right onto the second.
07:30Unsurprisingly for the time, it's another platformer, with Marty riding and doing tricks with his hoverboard the whole time.
07:36It's also, undeniably, of higher quality than the NES game.
07:41With better gameplay, but particularly with its chibi, anime-inspired visuals.
07:46The Wizard of Oz Beyond the Yellow Brick Road
07:56The Wizard of Oz is a wealth of lore, interesting creatures, characters, and locations that could suit a video game
08:03well.
08:03That's not to say that it isn't still weird that we got a turn-based RPG that only uses touch
08:09controls on the DS.
08:11Beyond the Yellow Brick Road follows Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion,
08:16as they set out to defeat four witches at the request of Oz.
08:20There are plenty of other enemies to face, with battles taking place in a first-person view similar to Earthbound.
08:25While it isn't uncommon to see film adaptations based on The Land of Oz, a turn-based RPG is something
08:32else entirely.
08:34The Sport
08:42The NES's library has multiple games that you would never know are licensed.
08:48The Sport is a combination of Paintball and Capture the Flag, where you shoot enemies using the Zapper, steal their
08:55flag, and return it to your base.
08:57Surprisingly, this is very loosely based on a 1985 movie, Gotcha.
09:03It follows a college student who gets unwittingly wrapped up in a spy plot while traveling abroad,
09:07and he's shown to be the reigning champ of his school-wide paintball game, also called Gotcha.
09:13Why the creators felt they needed to license this instead of just making a paintball game is a mystery.
09:20Plus, the movie was a critical and financial flop, making this game, released two years later, even more of an
09:26oddity.
09:33Nacho Libre
09:42For anyone who has seen Nacho Libre, they know it has a signature quirky brand of humor.
09:48While it is a movie about wrestling, it was still a strange choice to adapt into a video game.
09:53You have a variety of wrestlers to play as, not just Nacho, and you face off against others, climbing your
09:59way towards being a famous luchador.
10:01It features some cutscenes from the actual movie, but also redesigns others using a paper-cut-out art style, though
10:08still with live-action images.
10:10In addition to wrestling matches, you also have some really random minigames that don't have anything to do with wrestling.
10:18Just a strange amalgamation all around.
10:23Uno, dos, tres.
10:29Esto se acabó.
10:31Blues Brothers 2000
10:41Blues Brothers 2000 was released two years after the movie it was based on, itself a sequel to an SNL
10:48movie, and which was a critical and box office dud.
10:51So, yeah, a very strange choice and path for a licensed game.
10:57It follows L. Wood breaking out of prison and rescuing his bandmates in order to play for the Battle of
11:02the Bands competition.
11:03What follows is some pretty bland 3D platforming that pretty much everyone agreed was not worth the time.
11:10Understandably, an anomaly in the Nintendo 64's library, a poor game based on a bad movie that no one was
11:17really asking for in the first place.
11:18D. Wood breaking out of prison
11:30Rap Jam Volume 1
11:39Like we said, there were plenty of basketball games in the 90s, and while this Super Nintendo Trainwreck actually was
11:47about the sport,
11:47it didn't feature any NBA players.
11:50Rap Jam Volume 1, as you might expect, featured popular hip-hop artists of the time, including LL Cool J,
11:58Coolio, Queen Latifah, and Public Enemy.
12:01Despite featuring so many rappers, the actual gameplay doesn't feature any music.
12:06Just some really basic sound design, including a sound bite of a crowd yelling,
12:11Yeah! after every basket that will sound like nails on a chalkboard before long.
12:16It also just wasn't that fun to play.
12:19Needless to say, there was never a Volume 2.
12:22Grease.
12:22You tell me the name of the chief, I'm a rock and roll party queen.
12:28Seeing an old IP dredged up to earn a quick buck is often uncomfortable.
12:34And in the case of Grease on Wii and DS, it's just plain odd.
12:38Based on the beloved 1978 musical, it takes you through the movie's scenes set to covers of its famous songs.
12:45All you have to do is follow the directional inputs, and in the case of the Wii version, movements that
12:51pop up on screen.
12:52Being that the movie it's based on was over 30 years old at the time, it was definitely a strange
12:58license to bring back.
12:59Plus, it all looks and feels pretty low effort.
13:03The visuals are cheap, and hilariously, some of the lyrics are censored.
13:08Ghost of the Night.
13:17Defenders of Dynatron City.
13:25This NES game was almost destined to fall into obscurity.
13:29Defenders of Dynatron City was released a year after the Super Nintendo was already out.
13:34More importantly, it was based on a planned multimedia franchise that no one seemed to care about.
13:41In February of 1992, the pilot for an animated show of the same name aired, but wasn't picked up for
13:48a full series.
13:49That same month, Marvel began publishing a six-issue comic series, finishing the same month the game was released.
13:56Not many were familiar with the likes of Buzzsaw Girl, Miss Megawatt, and Monkey Kid due to the IP not
14:03taking off.
14:04And it's far more obscure today than it was then.
14:08Super Godzilla.
14:21Super Godzilla has gotten a multitude of video games over the years, with the best of them letting you unleash
14:27his power on other monsters or the environments he's stomping through.
14:31What makes Super Godzilla on Super Nintendo a bit of a strange one is the gameplay style the developers chose.
14:37It's mostly a strategy game.
14:40The top screen shows cinematics of Godzilla's progression, but the bottom screen is actually how you control him, choosing the
14:47direction he goes in and what buildings he destroys.
14:50It isn't exactly exciting compared to the prospect of actually rampaging through a city, though you do get to control
14:58Godzilla when he goes up against other monsters.
15:08Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
15:19Certain developers during the NES days looked for any kind of license they could turn into a game, no matter
15:25how bizarre the idea was.
15:28Enter Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, based on the famous novella from 1886.
15:34There isn't much in the story that would make for good gameplay, and so the team had to make something
15:38up.
15:39As Dr. Jekyll heads towards a church to marry his betrothed, he must avoid pretty much everything and everyone in
15:46his path.
15:46Once his anger meter fills up, he turns into Mr. Hyde.
15:51Day turns to night, and you must fire a psycho wave at monsters to deplete the meter and turn back.
15:57It's infamous these days for being a frustrating, confusing mess, and definitely an unusual license to adapt.
16:12DARKENED SKY
16:14Psst! Come back, you stupid dwentil! Where are you going?
16:20While this game was also released on PC, console players could only find it on GameCube.
16:25And honestly, it's just too weird not to include.
16:29DARKENED SKY is a fantasy-action-adventure game following a young, magically-gifted woman searching for her mother.
16:35She gains access to a variety of spells, all of which are unlocked by collecting Skittles.
16:41Yes, the candy.
16:43While the game is pretty light-hearted, there's still a major clash of design and setting with the tie-in
16:49product.
16:49You'd expect a video game focusing on Skittles would be some silly type of platformer.
16:54Not using them as the key part in its magic system on a grand adventure.
16:58Sergeant Saunders Combat.
17:12This strategy game was based on Combat, an extremely dramatic show about the US military during World War II that
17:20aired on ABC from 1962 to 1967.
17:23Remember, during the 90s, and for a long time after that, video games were thought of as only for kids.
17:30I don't know what kid wanted a game based on a war drama from the 60s, but you had the
17:35option.
17:35Or, at least you did if you lived in Japan, because this game was only released for the Super Famicom.
17:41So, a game based on something that would be incredibly obscure to the average Japanese kid only released in Japan?
17:48Yeah, we'd say that's pretty weird.
17:50Ghost Lion.
18:01There are a lot of elements that make this NES RPG exceptionally odd.
18:06None of it has to do with the game itself, but the movie it's tied to.
18:10It's based on Beyond the Pyramids, The Legend of the White Lion, a TV movie that only aired in Japan.
18:16However, while the entire crew was Japanese, it's an English language film with Japanese subtitles.
18:23And it gets weirder.
18:24While the game was released in Japan the same year as the movie, 1989, it didn't make it to North
18:29America until 1992, a year after the Super Nintendo launched.
18:33If any Western gamers did happen to play it, they likely had no idea it was based, albeit extremely loosely,
18:40on such an obscure license.
18:42Know of any other bizarre licensed games that were released on Nintendo's consoles?
18:46Let us know about them in the comments, and we'll see you next time.
19:00We'll see you next time.
19:01Here in the next video.
19:01I'm going to get back to theouldery.
19:01What are the teams thatulturenust!!
19:02What are the teams that turned against you here?!
19:02What are the teams that lead to for now?
