00:09Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're counting down our picks for the 20 hardest
00:14video games that are based on cartoon shows.
00:23Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:28the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33Rugrats Search for Reptar
00:40Tommy Pickles and Pals are on a quest, a quest that sees them scour far and wide for Reptar
00:46puzzle pieces. Inspired by the antics of the popular Nickelodeon show, the cartoon babies are
00:51in for a doozy of a time, as they explore myriad confusing levels, in addition to some silly
00:57minigames, like mini golf and heck, even football with a baby bottle. Now at first glance, you'd
01:03think a Rugrats game would be pretty darn easy. However, this game is about as easy as changing
01:08a diaper with oven mitts on. If you are even able to figure out where to go and what your
01:13objective is,
01:14then you will contend with a super wonky camera and some janky controls. The puzzle sections might
01:19seem simple, but they're actually quite confounding. And the plethora of tricky platforming sections
01:24will lead to countless retries. Perhaps it's just better to hop into the crib and take a nice nap.
01:35Which way now?
01:36The Flintstones, The Treasure of Sierra Mad Rock
01:45The Flintstones have sadly been underutilized in video games, which is a real bummer considering the
01:50prehistoric setting of the cartoon and the madcaps of Fred Flintstone and co easily provide a solid
01:56blueprint for some really zany good times. Well, 1994's The Treasure of Sierra Mad Rock for the SNES,
02:03while being an enjoyable platforming romp overall, manages to test your gaming skills like no other.
02:09This Stone Age adventure is overflowing with challenges to attempt to conquer. The controls are
02:15easily the toughest part to deal with, as Fred and Barney's jumps feel imprecise and stiff.
02:20Landing hits on enemies is also a sore spot, and no, not just for the baddies, because of some
02:25inconsistent hit detection. Then of course, you are greeted with a very finite amount of lives and
02:31continues, which likely spells game over after game over after, yes, game over. It was probably just
02:37easier to invent the stone wheel than to actually beat this game.
02:47Rocko's Modern Life, Spunky's Dangerous Day
02:56The lovable, quirky wallaby is back at it, this time saving his doggo pal, Spunky, from increasingly
03:02cartoony yet dangerous scenarios in a sort of Lemmings-esque way. Now it's not going to be easy
03:08to be the hero, since Rocko has his work cut out for him, as he manipulates the world around the
03:13two
03:13of them to keep Spunky safe, hopefully. While this game does feel like you are playing out an episode
03:18of the cartoon, it falls into the trappings of many licensed games of this era. Things like brutal hit
03:24detection, floaty controls, unclear objectives, trial and error environmental moments, and limited lives
03:31times, means getting through this game will test your patience and your resolve. Again, it's a fun
03:36little game where Rocko's and Spunky's personalities shine through, but it's going to take some real
03:41grit to push through O-Town. Just get to that golden fire hydrant and all will be well. Good luck.
03:52Scooby Doo, Night of 100 Frights
04:00Apart from being one of the very best Scooby Doo games around, Night of 100 Frights is also one of
04:05the toughest. Much of this is owed to the game's Metroidvania design elements, where the game's many
04:11stages and environments are actually interconnected, locked off by Scooby snack requirement numbers.
04:16Additionally, certain gadgets are also needed to progress through specific gated off areas.
04:20This Metroidvania influence does make the game feel more cohesive and engaging overall,
04:26but often requires loads of backtracking via warp gates and seeking out collectibles that you may
04:31have missed or just forgotten to scoop up. The game really does make you feel like you are a part
04:36of
04:36the Scooby Doo cartoon, replete with plenty of baddies and goons to contend with. Toss in some challenging
04:41platforming sections, where Scooby's floaty controls and the often wonky camera don't always help you,
04:46in tandem with some punishing boss battles, and it's clear this game isn't all that easy.
05:02Tiny Toon Adventures
05:11Getting to play as a good chunk of the cast of Tiny Toon Adventures, including the likes of Buster,
05:17Plucky, and Furball is a real blast here. But like many other NES games of this era,
05:22this game puts up a fight. Yes, yes, we know you can easily wrap up this game in under 45
05:27minutes if
05:28you're a sheer platforming pro. However, for most of us near mortals out there, it's gonna take a lot
05:34of trial and error. This game doesn't want you to make it to the final battle with Montana Max without
05:39first proving your skills. Each level is overflowing with baddies that seemingly just pop up out of
05:45nowhere, platforming gauntlets that require pixel perfect precision and a bit of luck as you try to
05:50avoid Elmira.
05:58Tailspin
06:06Acting as a sort of shmup light, Tailspin for the NES is a rock hard adventure. Baloo must venture
06:12through a cornucopia of levels inspired by the classic Disney cartoon, taking down goons, earning
06:18loads of money, and upgrading the sea duck to be more robust all around. Upgrading Baloo's vehicle
06:23really is of the utmost importance in this game, since it's just so darn easy to lose health and
06:28lives as you soar through the skies. The game generously sprinkles in bonus stages where you
06:33hop atop Kit's Cloud Surfer, which kind of essentially just looks like a silver croissant,
06:38if we're being honest. I love it. Getting to grips with Baloo's sea duck and Kit's cloud
06:42surfer slash silver croissant thing are key elements to this game, since movement feels unlike any other
06:48similar game on the NES. Learning the ins and outs of each level really only happens in this game
06:53through sheer persistence and trial and error, since, like many shmups, you have to watch out for
06:58peril from every single angle on screen. The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout.
07:18You know, it's interesting. Watching gameplay for this game instantly reminds me of those uber challenging
07:24run-and-gun platforming sections from the game Cuphead. There's just so much happening on screen
07:29at any given time that Bugs needs to contend with that it kind of seems like death can come at
07:34any
07:34moment, much like Cuphead, and it often does. And what the heck is with all those sentient alarm clocks?
07:39I don't know. We may never know, I guess. Time can only tell, huh? Okay, sorry about that. Bugs is
07:45just
07:45trying to get to his birthday celebration after all, but everything and everyone wants to stop him for some
07:51reason. Brutal platforming, relentless baddies, oodles of hazards, tricky traps, and more await our
07:57eponymous rabbit. Plus, the game's ending is just so wacky because Bugs does actually eventually make
08:02it to his birthday party, only to be greeted by his friends, something we very much say in quotations,
08:08because just a few stages earlier, they were actually all just trying to send him to his early grave
08:14in the form of boss battles. That's very odd indeed, right? Well, happy birthday, Bugs Bunny.
08:25Batman Vengeance
08:35Batman Vengeance is one heck of a devious game. The cartoon-esque art style belies the heavy
08:40challenge level that the caped crusader has to face in this game. As usual, Batman must deal with the
08:46menacing machinations of Joker, something that leaves Batman with many, many surprises over
08:51the course of this adventure. Vengeance can really feel quite unforgiving at times. The combat encounters
08:57are downright brutal, with Batman never quite feeling as powerful as he should. The finicky
09:02platforming sections don't really help either, especially with a wonky camera. Oh, and don't even
09:07get us started on those gosh darn stealth segments that never really work as you think they should.
09:11Batman Vengeance certainly oozes a moody style, but it's hampered by too much trial and error,
09:18especially in the boss battles and vehicle sections.
09:27The Ren and Stimpy Show presents Stimpy's Invention.
09:39The Mutate-O-Matic, an invention that seeks to turn garbage into delicious food, because, um, reasons,
09:46I guess. But, after an overload of the device, the important pieces scattered all over the place
09:51willy nilly. Now, our titular duo must seek high and low in this fever dream of a game to gather
09:57up
09:57all the pieces, because, again, reasons, I guess. Now, I'm gonna risk sounding like a broken record
10:03very much here, but this might as well just be called trial and error the game. Yes, I know I've
10:09mentioned trial and error a lot in this list, but it kinda is the case with a lot of these
10:12games.
10:12While a super duper short game overall, it's so heavily reliant on guessing what's gonna come next
10:18that you never actually feel safe or prepared, which, as you might have guessed, can lead to a
10:22really tough challenge for our wacky duo. And can I just say, that juxtaposition between the derpy
10:28giraffes just lollygagging around in the zoo level to then showing their true menacing visages is straight
10:34up pure nightmare fuel. Animaniacs.
10:53Now, this is a safe space, right? Because, honestly, I need to admit something pathetic when it comes to my
10:58experience with Animaniacs, specifically for the Sega Genesis when I was a kid. You see, back when I
11:04was a kid, I never once got past the very start of the game. Yes, I'm talking about the initial
11:09opening stage of the game, the very, very beginning. So, right at the start of this game, you must use
11:14Dot's charm ability to charm the dog who is blocking access to the movie studio. Yeah, well, you probably
11:20guessed, my tiny feeble-minded kid brain never once figured that out, so I actually only ever enjoyed the
11:26first few minutes of this game over and over. Good times, I guess. But, you see, each of the Animaniacs'
11:32unique character-specific skills and abilities are actually what makes this game super tough all
11:37around. You must know when, where, and even how to use them if you hope to proceed through the unique
11:42Warner Bros. movie studio lot soundstage-inspired levels. Plus, the actual platforming with all three
11:48characters can also be a real doozy. Best of luck. Darkwing Duck
12:09Darkwing Duck is more or less a Disney-fied Mega Man light game. What's cool here is that you can
12:14tackle
12:15the stages in any order you'd like. This non-linear structure means, should you find a level too
12:20challenging, simply tackle another one first and then come back to it when your skills improve,
12:25hopefully. Darkwing's weapon doesn't fire very far, which can often lead to challenging
12:29battles with the game's various cartoony baddies. Add to that some truly sadistic platforming sections
12:35and some sporadic difficulty spikes. Once you do, hopefully, make it to the various level bosses,
12:40you better be ready for some tough-as-nails fights, where pattern recognition and memorization are
12:46absolute keys to survival here. Roadrunner's Death Valley Rally
13:05The Looney Tunes Question to end all Looney Tunes questions. Who is the real villain? Wile E. Coyote or
13:12Roadrunner? It's hard to say, right? I guess it really depends on how you look at each episode of
13:17the beloved cartoons. Well, in the case of 1992's Death Valley Rally, it's clear Wile E. Coyote will
13:23stop at nothing to flatten, pummel, or otherwise take down Roadrunner for good. But the crafty
13:29Roadrunner will, of course, never let that happen. Poor Wile E. Coyote just never gets a break.
13:34Good luck trying to escape Wile's traps and hazards in this game, however. While Roadrunner is
13:39blazingly fast, more so after some birdseed, the floaty controls, slippery-feeling movement,
13:45and surprise traps will almost always get you. Seriously, sometimes you won't even know there's a
13:50hazard until you are basically on top of it. Oh, and those maze-like levels don't boost things in your
13:55favor.
14:04Goof Troop
14:12Goof Troop for Super Nintendo is actually one of the more unique games on this entire list,
14:16since it's first and foremost a puzzle game, not a platformer or action-adventure game.
14:21This solo or local co-op game is a real treat, especially for fans of the cartoon. However,
14:27make no mistake about it, the puzzles in this game are often maddening and will break your brain more
14:31often than not. Spatial environmental puzzles are the name of the game here, as you try to solve them
14:37from a top-down view. Goofy and Max do have means to defend themselves from the game's enemies, but it's
14:42more
14:42reliant on objects found in the environment. Using various objects like grappling hooks and candles
14:48are also necessary if you hope to proceed to the later, tougher stages. You best get your thinking
14:53cap on if you want to solve the game's many, many devious conundrums.
15:05Garfield Caught in the Act
15:16Now, I never would have honestly thought that the lasagna-loving, Monday-hating cat would feature
15:21in such a downright punishing game, yet here we are. Garfield Caught in the Act sees your oddball
15:27feline getting stuck inside the TV after things quickly go awry with him and Odie. The TV premise
15:33works great here because it separates levels into various television show-themed levels, with each one
15:38testing your platforming skills. Now, as you might have guessed from Garfield's hefty size as a house
15:43cat, he isn't exactly nimble, which equates to some cumbersome and sluggish platforming. The game
15:49also feels like it sort of pays homage, lovingly or otherwise, to games like Ghouls and Ghosts,
15:54with the tricky traps and hectic hazards that seem to pop up out of nowhere. It can be a short
15:59and
15:59relatively smooth game for some, but for many of us, myself very much included, this game can feel like
16:05clambering your way through a busy Monday afternoon with nary a break in sight.
16:17X- Mutant Apocalypse
16:27X-Men games really do run the difficulty gamut, or gambit if we want to get punny about it.
16:32Eh? Eh? Okay, I thought it was funny. Some are rock-heart arcade-like experiences,
16:37like this very game, and others feel more like a breeze, kinda like enjoying an episode of the
16:42classic X-Men Saturday morning cartoon with your favorite sugary breakfast cereal.
16:46Mutant Apocalypse isn't here to hide the fact that it's incredibly tough. Stepping into the
16:51superpowered boots of Cyclops, Gambit, Wolverine, Beast, and Psylocke is a real treat here,
16:56but each character takes some getting used to, since they each have their own character-specific
17:00movements, attacks, and abilities. If you are hoping to have plenty of lives to try out each
17:05level and character, then you aren't in luck here, not at all. Mix in some complex mutant powers,
17:11devious and relentless baddies to deal with, difficulty spikes when it comes to some of the
17:15platforming, and the fact that you can only play this game in single player, unfortunately,
17:19and we can easily see why this X-Men game isn't for the faint of heart.
17:32DuckTales
17:41Apart from being a super iconic classic Disney game with some downright incredible chiptune music,
17:47DuckTales' awesomely fun pogo stick mechanic where you use Scrooge McDuck's cane to bound around each
17:53level like a madman is equally as hard to get used to. Now, we love the way movement works in
17:58this
17:58game, full stop, where basic platforming and the cane hopping mechanic work synergistically to get
18:03through each level unscathed, hopefully at least. So long as you can get the rhythm and momentum down
18:09pat, then you may not have as much of a hard time with this game, but for many a gamer
18:13out there,
18:14it was a tricky feat to get good at. Good thing the game has oodles of collectibles to seek out,
18:19which motivates you to get the most out of this fun, yet super challenging ability for Scrooge McDuck.
18:34Mickey Mania, the timeless adventures of Mickey Mouse.
18:46Good golly, Mickey Mania truly does feel and play like a classic Mickey Mouse cartoon. The art style
18:52here is sublime, the animations are on point, and the music is the chef's kiss to top it all off.
18:57But my goodness, this game's lovely presentation honestly belies a deeply punishing gameplay
19:03experience that rewards patience, persistence, and maybe a thrown controller or two or three.
19:09Each cartoony stage is littered with challenging goons to fend off, obstacles and hazards that you
19:15don't often see until you are about to actually get hit by them, and some tight platforming that
19:19requires pixel perfect precision. While the marbles, for attacking enemies, and the stars, for extra
19:24health for Mickey, might seem abundant at first glance, you do quickly realize you run out much
19:29faster than you actually acquire them. Mickey Mania is designed with arcade sensibilities through and
19:35through. The Simpsons, Bart vs. the Space Mutants.
19:53There are actually a handful of pretty darn tough Simpsons games out there, but for our money it's
19:58Bart vs. the Space Mutants that really takes the stale cake here. A fun game? Yes, for the most part.
20:04Super duper tough? Absolutely. Bart has the ability to see space mutants that are disguised as humans,
20:10using some specialized x-ray glasses. Something that actually comes into play when encountering
20:15characters in each level, be they friend or foe. The thing with this game is that your objectives
20:20in each level seemingly are so obtuse. For example, needing to take down exit signs in the museum level
20:25to progress. Oh, and take two hits and it's back to the start for Bart. The controls are also a
20:31contentious area since they don't always respond how you would hope they would. And let's not forget
20:36the loads of backtracking, repetition sections, and odd puzzle elements.
20:47Gargoyles.
20:54The chunky art style and hefty movements and abilities for Goliath all work wonders to sell
20:59the fact that this is a Gargoyles game through and through. But even with the game's fire and
21:04brimstone levels, moody cityscapes, and often mature overtones, it still manages to be even harder
21:10than you'd actually initially think. You'd think that a Gargoyle named Goliath would be near invincible,
21:14right? However, spoiler alert, he's not. Momentum and inertia are things to consider
21:20when moving Goliath around each atmospheric stage, which can sometimes spell disaster if
21:25you aren't precise and careful. Gargoyles also just has one of those difficulty curves that's
21:30more like a 2x4 than a curved rail. It's never quite clear what Goliath can climb on or land on,
21:36and many of the game's enemies are complete and utter damage sponges. This is a rock-hard,
21:41stone-cold game that will consistently test your gaming resolve.
21:52Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES.
22:03Five words, otherwise known as two very specific levels, are all that is needed to sum up this
22:09infamously challenging and notoriously punishing NES game. Are you ready? The Dam and The Technodrome.
22:16Yep, good luck, you will most certainly need it.
22:26So, do you agree with our picks for this list? What are some of the hardest games you've played
22:30that are based on cartoon shows? Let us know in the comments.
