00:00Can you dig it? Can you dig it? Can you dig it?
00:09Welcome to Mojo Plays, and just because a game was a licensed tie-in doesn't mean it was always a
00:15simple cash grab.
00:16Sometimes, they were some of the best games of the generation.
00:20Don't tell me, because it's haunted, right?
00:24Yeah, Shaggy, how'd you know?
00:26Because it's always haunted.
00:30Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:35videos.
00:38Scarface, the world is yours.
00:40Tony, come on, where the hell are you, Ben? What happened?
00:43Whoa, that's one. So surprised I think I'm dead or run off or something.
00:47Well, I'm back, okay?
00:49The release of Grand Theft Auto 3 unleashed a deluge of copycat open-world games onto the market,
00:55and some were great, some were okay, and some had no right to be as much fun as they were.
01:01Scarface, the world is yours, rewrites Tony Montana's gruesome end during the finale of the film,
01:05and sees him survive the encounter and begin his quest for revenge while also rebuilding his empire.
01:12The world is yours perfectly recaptures the spirit of the film, humor, and Tony himself,
01:17even without Al Pacino reprising the role.
01:19Gameplay itself was your standard GTA clone of the time,
01:23but that fit perfectly with the aesthetic of the license, which heavily inspired GTA Vice City.
01:28Even if you're not a big fan of the film, simply exploring Miami is an entertaining experience,
01:33and the character of Tony Montana is always good for an unintentional laugh.
01:38The world is yours, chico, and everything in it.
01:42So say goodnight to the bad guy.
01:45Speed Racer, the video game.
01:47Sometimes an IP is so perfect for a video game adaptation,
01:51you wonder why it took a movie tie-in game to cash in on the idea.
01:55Speed Racer, the video game, based on the film by the Wachowski,
01:58combines elements of F-Zero speeds, wipe-out physics,
02:02and a bit of burnout crashes into one extremely entertaining racing experience.
02:06The goal of the game is not only to come in first,
02:09but also have the most points by performing stunts on the many crazy tracks
02:13or causing the other racers to crash using your Car-Foo,
02:17which allows players to eliminate the competition in a more cinematic fashion.
02:21The game is as colorful and over-the-top as the film itself,
02:24and has enough callbacks and references for fans of the film to keep them racing,
02:28but it's also just a damn fun time on the track,
02:31which is exactly what you'd want from a Speed Racer game.
02:34Def Jam Vendetta.
02:35This is it. Now just remember, you lose, I'm taking it dirt now.
02:42The PS2 had some of the best fighting games on the market,
02:46but while others were playing Tekken, Street Fighter, or even WWE,
02:50the real ones were throwing down in Def Jam Vendetta.
02:53Taking the classic wrestling-style game and filling it with hip-hop artists like DMX,
02:57Ludacris, Method Man, Ghostface Killa, and more along with tracks from said artists,
03:02and letting them beat the ever-loving snot out of each other seems like a strange idea,
03:07but in practice was some of the most fun wrestling fans could have on their PS2.
03:12Anyone familiar with WWE No Mercy will feel right at home with the game's mechanics and controls,
03:17but thanks to the creative story mode and the unconventional combatants,
03:21Def Jam Vendetta manages to create a unique experience all its own
03:25in a genre that was wildly oversaturated on the PS2.
03:34Terminator 3, The Redemption.
03:37Do you realize what you've done?
03:3962 seconds ago I was activated.
03:4214 seconds ago I sat up on this table.
03:44I should...
03:45General, don't. It's been reprogrammed.
03:47Like a lot of the properties on our list,
03:49you wouldn't think it would be that difficult to translate the Terminator to video games,
03:53but for some reason, most devs just can't find the right formula.
03:57One of the few outliers of this trend, however, is Terminator 3, The Redemption.
04:02Based on the divisive third Terminator film,
04:04The Redemption not only adapts the events of the film,
04:07but also fills out the backstory of the T-850 sent back in time to protect John Connor and Catherine
04:12Brewster.
04:13Gameplay is your typical third-person shooter,
04:16but mixes up the standard gameplay with numerous on-rails and vehicle sections,
04:20and with the additional backstory of the Terminator, manages to improve on the film it's based on.
04:25The Redemption might only be about as long as the movie it's based on,
04:28but it's still a great companion to the movie for a quick weekend playthrough.
04:36Game over.
04:39The Punisher.
04:40How many people have you killed in the last few weeks?
04:43Not sure. There were a lot of explosions.
04:49Loosely based on the 2004 film, and with Thomas Jane reprising the role of Frank Castle,
04:55The Punisher is your standard third-person shooter, complete with the occasional duel-wielding,
04:59but what truly makes The Punisher game special is when you're able to get up close and personal with your
05:04enemies.
05:05Along with the ability to turn any nearby enemy into a human shield,
05:09The Punisher can deal out additional punishment through environmental takedowns and interrogations,
05:14all in your control of how far you want to push these conversations.
05:18The Punisher game didn't do anything truly revolutionary outside of the numerous torture techniques,
05:23and it didn't need to.
05:25All you truly need for a true Punisher experience is copious amounts of guns and blood,
05:30and The Punisher game more than sets the bar in those respects,
05:33and remains the truest video game adaptation of the character to date.
05:43Welcome to America.
05:44The Warriors.
05:45He'll get us up.
05:46Yeah, but can he brawl?
05:48Don't matter how much talent he's got if he gets wrecked.
05:50That's what we're about to find out.
05:51Remember back when Rockstar used to make more than just a couple games every decade?
05:56Back on the PS2, they not only gave us three GTAs,
05:59but arguably one of the best licensed games of all time.
06:03The Warriors, based on the 1979 film of the same name,
06:07acts as a prequel to the events of the film,
06:09and showcases the rise of the Warriors leading up to the movie.
06:12The game is primarily a beat-em-up with a heavy emphasis on grappling and brutal hand-to-hand combat,
06:18which could be accentuated with the occasional melee weapon.
06:21There were also elements of survival,
06:23and even RPG-style mechanics, a la San Andreas,
06:26in which players could upgrade their stamina and learn new abilities through side quests.
06:30Overall, even if you're not a fan of the film,
06:33the Warriors game is a much deeper and more rewarding experience
06:36than your typical button-masher beat-em-up.
06:38Banging with us ain't no typical street fight, Rembrandt.
06:41It's gonna get crazy out there.
06:43So you gotta use your head or it's gonna get stopped.
06:46Always keep your space,
06:47watch your back,
06:48and make the most out of every opportunity.
06:50The Nightmare Before Christmas,
06:52Oogie's Revenge.
06:53Oh!
06:54I don't believe we've met.
06:56I'm Jack.
06:58Jack Skeleton.
07:00Ah!
07:01What?
07:03You...
07:04You're not from Halloweentown, are you?
07:07For a lot of fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas,
07:10the closest we got to Halloweentown was Kingdom Hearts 2.
07:13But Jack had one more adventure on the PS2 that got criminally overlooked.
07:17Oogie's Revenge, developed by the same team responsible for Devil May Cry of all things,
07:22sees Jack leaving Halloweentown to find inspiration for the next Halloween,
07:26only for Oogie Boogie to get resurrected in his absence.
07:29The game features multiple wonderfully realized and detailed levels of Jack battling Oogie's forces,
07:34and lets players explore Halloweentown and areas we never got to see in the films.
07:39The combat might not be as deep as Devil May Cry, but is still tight and responsive,
07:43and the cast reprising their roles for a new adventure along with new songs
07:47makes the experience feel that much more authentic.
07:50Very troubled night, that we will set Jesus right.
08:00Van Helsing.
08:02God is not to blame for your past sins.
08:06But if you pass this test of faith,
08:10he will help you rediscover your past.
08:13While most of the summer blockbuster video game adaptations were cash grabs at best,
08:18sometimes they managed to elevate their source material,
08:20and that's exactly what the Van Helsing game did.
08:23Borrowing heavily, and we do mean heavily, from the Devil May Cry series,
08:27right down to the collectible orbs dropped by enemies for upgrades,
08:31Van Helsing managed to be more than just a simple action-heavy clone of its influences.
08:36With Hugh Jackman giving his all once again to the titular character,
08:39players explore the many wonderfully recreated locations of the film,
08:43battling Dracula's minions and many bosses,
08:45before facing down against the main evil himself.
08:49Gameplay might be simple, and the game incredibly linear,
08:52but that's part of the game's charm.
08:54It wants nothing more than to entertain you for an afternoon,
08:57just like the film it's based on, and who are we to turn down a good time?
09:01I'm the monster.
09:03I have seen many monsters, my friend.
09:07Believe me.
09:09You are not a monster.
09:12One Piece Grand Adventure
09:13Fans of the Power Stone games don't know what they're missing by skipping One Piece Grand Adventure.
09:19While technically more of a definitive version of the previous game, One Piece Grand Battle,
09:23Grand Adventure adds more characters, levels, and quality of life improvements
09:27that make it more than worth a reason to set sail.
09:30The cel-shaded art style does a decent job recreating the anime's unique style,
09:34but the real draw is the gameplay itself.
09:36For a basic beat-em-up, the RPG mechanics are surprisingly deep,
09:41and you can upgrade each character individually,
09:43and then bring them into the campaign and arena battle modes to test your skills.
09:48The combat might not be especially complex,
09:50and the minigames are simple button mashers,
09:52but for those who can't get enough of Luffy and his crew,
09:55you're going to have a good time fighting your way through the grand adventure.
09:59Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
10:01Why, if it isn't young Potter, how are you?
10:06Glad to be back at Hogwarts?
10:07Decades before players would be set loose in a fully realized Hogwarts,
10:11the tie-in game Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
10:14was as close as fans could get to enrolling in Hogwarts themselves.
10:17Just like in the film, players will learn magic spells
10:20and even be given the ability to fly around Hogwarts Castle
10:23and explore the surrounding areas while also completing side quests for familiar characters.
10:28Chamber of Secrets perfectly recreated the feeling of the films,
10:31switching between puzzling dungeons and tense stealth encounters
10:34alongside the more whimsical and magical spells and combat.
10:38Things would only improve further with the sequel, Prisoner of Azkaban,
10:42even allowing players to take up the wands of Ron and Hermione
10:45who can not only learn their own skills,
10:47but are integral to solving many of the game's puzzles using their unique spells.
10:51This gave the Gryffindor team the help that they needed,
10:55allowing Harry to catch the Golden Snitch
10:57and win not only the game, but the Quidditch Cup as well.
11:01Peter Jackson's King Kong, the official game of the movie.
11:06Ready? Let's get out of here.
11:09Shh! Luke, I know I got it, it's fantastic.
11:12Besides having one of the most unnecessarily long names for a tie-in game ever,
11:16King Kong also raised the bar for what a licensed adaptation could and should be.
11:21Forgoing the traditional HUD that accompanied most first-person shooters of the time
11:25to give the game a more cinematic presentation,
11:27King Kong also innovated on the typical shooter mechanics
11:31by forcing players to scavenge weapons from the environment
11:34when their meager ammo supplies ran dry.
11:36Not only did players need to survive Skull Island as Jack
11:39in locations and environments not possible in the film,
11:43but also dominate the food chain as the titular Kong.
11:46The game pushed the PS2 to its absolute limits,
11:49and given the scale of the game,
11:51it's a small miracle the game runs as smoothly as it does.
11:54Truly, Peter Jackson's King Kong adaptation is the real eighth wonder of the world.
12:00It wasn't the airplanes.
12:02It was Beauty Killed the Beast.
12:04Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.
12:06I'm never really sure what Snoopy is dreaming.
12:15Right now I'm pretty sure he's a World War I flying ace.
12:19This one is going to seem extremely weird to anyone not familiar with Snoopy's war record.
12:24Snoopy vs. the Red Baron takes the imagination of everyone's favorite Beagle
12:28and gives him his pilot's license,
12:30and drops him into the World War I conflict
12:32to hunt down his greatest aerial rival, the Red Baron.
12:36While at first this might seem like a joke that's run its course,
12:39the flying mechanics are surprisingly solid and responsive,
12:42and Snoopy is dropped into real battles that took place in World War I,
12:46just with that classic Peanuts art style.
12:49While not as intense as other flight games like Ace Combat or even Star Fox,
12:53although you can still do a barrel roll,
12:55Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is one of the best dogfighting games
12:58rated E for everyone you can pick up and play.
13:02What's he doing, Charlie Brown?
13:06I think he's working on a sequel.
13:10There we'll come around!
13:12Scooby-Doo, Knight of 100 Frights
13:15Gee, Scoob, it's not like they got your name all over them.
13:18Well, actually, they do.
13:22Scooby-Doo!
13:26Raggy?
13:27Scooby-Doo is one of the oldest properties on our list,
13:30but just because this old dog has a number of titles under his collar
13:33doesn't mean that all of them are worth your time.
13:36However, Knight of 100 Frights manages to not only perfectly recapture the magic
13:41of old-school Scooby-Doo adventures,
13:43but manages to be a supremely solid platformer all on its own.
13:46With the premise of Scooby tracking down the members of the Scooby squad,
13:50the mansion Scooby explores quickly grows into an elaborate
13:53Metroidvania-style game of exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving.
13:57Not only are Scooby and the rest of the Mystery Inc. perfectly recreated,
14:01but so are many of their classic foes,
14:03making the game a perfect nostalgic trip for long-time Scooby-Doo fanatics
14:07and an entertaining interactive episode for even the most casual Scooby-Doo fan.
14:12Well, all these fiddles are a great start!
14:15Hey!
14:20Scooby-Dooby-Doo!
14:22Wee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee!
14:24The Simpsons Road Rage
14:26What do you think?
14:28Just get to the game already!
14:35Well, it would be incredibly easy to put The Simpsons' hit-and-run on this list,
14:39and rightfully so,
14:40we want to talk about the often-overlooked precursor to that beloved classic,
14:45The Simpsons Road Rage.
14:46Is Road Rage essentially nothing more than a crazy taxi clone?
14:50Well, yes.
14:51But, that doesn't make it any less fun to drive around Springfield
14:55at insane speeds in increasingly ridiculous vehicles,
14:58ferrying the many residents of Springfield to classic landmarks.
15:02The game has its fair share of jank,
15:04especially with collision detection issues,
15:06but honestly, it's part of the game's charm.
15:08While Hit-and-Run would vastly improve on The Simpsons' experience
15:11by copying the GTA formula,
15:13Road Rage still offers a fun time careening through Springfield
15:16and listening to all your favorite characters
15:18making funny remarks about your driving.
15:21Boy, remember what Daddy told you about being responsible
15:24and showing up to work on time?
15:26Well, it's all a lie.
15:28Futurama
15:39Another of Matt Groening's creations finds its way onto our list again,
15:43this time jumping a thousand years into the future.
15:46Futurama may have never reached the same heights as The Simpsons,
15:49but it's arguably the better show
15:51with its incredibly sharp and witty writing
15:53and incredibly inventive world-building,
15:55all of which perfectly translate into the series' only video game outing.
15:59Gameplay is broken up into different genres
16:01as players take control of Fry in traditional third-person shooter combat,
16:05Leela in beat-em-up-style levels,
16:07and Bender's platforming sections,
16:09as Planet Express attempts to stop Mom from buying 50% of the Earth.
16:13Featuring the full cast returning
16:15and a narrative so good it was repurposed as a lost episode in the DVD collection,
16:20Futurama might not have been perfect,
16:22but its meta-bending game design and narrative
16:25make it an entertaining adventure for fans of the show.
16:28Now, if I understand time paradoxes,
16:30we're supposed to take the good ship
16:32and leave the bad ship behind for the original us, right?
16:36The bad behind...
16:38Say again?
16:39Just get in.
16:40The Matrix, Path of Neo
16:52Given the clear parallels with playing in a simulated world,
16:55it's honestly surprising we haven't gotten more Matrix video games.
16:59While Enter the Matrix was a decent experimental tie-in,
17:02Path of Neo managed to deliver the true Matrix experience fans had always hoped for.
17:07Naturally, given the game's title,
17:09you follow the Path of Neo throughout all the movies
17:11as he becomes The One,
17:13and the game does an admirable job of incorporating Neo's growing power
17:17and moveset into the game's numerous combat scenarios and encounters.
17:22Given the Wachowski's direct involvement,
17:24we get to see even more of Neo's journey
17:26beyond simply recreating specific moments from the movies,
17:29including a much more video game-y ending
17:32to the climactic showdown with Agent Smith.
17:34While still not a perfect experience,
17:36for fans of the series,
17:38this is as close as we'll ever come to jacking into the Matrix itself.
17:52Ultimate Spider-Man
18:02Although the Spider-Man 2 tie-in game is the reason swinging feels so fluid and responsive
18:07in modern Spidey games,
18:09it's Ultimate Spider-Man that is the true definitive wall-crawler experience on the PS2.
18:14Adapting the beloved comic run of the same name,
18:17Ultimate Spider-Man brings the web-slinger's adventures off the page
18:20in a way no other adaptation did before or since.
18:24Ultimate Spider-Man perfectly recreates the look of Spidey in the comics,
18:28right down to the panels during cutscenes,
18:30and takes the classic web-swinging and combat mechanics of Spider-Man 2
18:34and creates an original story that takes place within the narrative of the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
18:39Players even get the chance to follow and control Venom in his own separate storyline.
18:44Everything from the characters, the writing, the world, and the swinging
18:47are everything fans of the web-slinger could hope for,
18:50and it's disappointing this adventure is routinely overlooked for Spider-Man 2.
19:00The Incredible Hulk, Ultimate Destruction.
19:03There's a thin line between good and bad.
19:06I walk that line every single day.
19:09When I stray from it,
19:13people die.
19:15It's hard to believe it's been almost 20 years
19:17since we last had a standalone Hulk game,
19:20but when every title is compared to Ultimate Destruction,
19:23it's difficult to improve on perfection.
19:26Ultimate Destruction more than lives up to its name
19:28with nearly everything in the environments fully destructible,
19:31from buildings to cars, buses, and more.
19:34Leaving puny Banner on the sidelines,
19:36players are free to unleash the full might of the Hulk
19:39as he faces off against numerous villains
19:41and the ever-present military operations that constantly pursue him.
19:45The story itself was there mostly to lead the Hulk from one area to another,
19:49while the core gameplay loop of unleashing the Hulk into an environment
19:52and seeing just how much wanton chaos he can unleash
19:55was the main draw of the game.
19:57This gameplay loop remains incredibly satisfying two decades later
20:00and remains one of the best representations of the Hulk's ultimate power.
20:05You don't have anywhere to go.
20:07Who does?
20:17James Bond 007, Everything or Nothing
20:20I don't suppose we could just talk about this.
20:29I guess not.
20:31Those who have been telling themselves for the last couple decades
20:33that the best Bond game of all time is Goldeneye
20:36are either lying or have never played Everything or Nothing.
20:40With a film-quality cast,
20:42including Pierce Brosnan in his final appearance as Bond,
20:45Willem Dafoe as the main antagonist,
20:47and Heidi Klum as the main Bond girl,
20:50Everything or Nothing felt like a forgotten Bond film you could play.
20:53Trading in the first-person perspective
20:55for third-person cover-based shooter combat,
20:58Everything or Nothing throws, well,
20:59everything that makes the Bond series so spectacular into it
21:03and creates one of the best Bond experiences never put on film.
21:06With close-quarters combat, cover shooting, car chases,
21:09an endless supply of gadgets and increasingly destructive vehicles,
21:13and Bond's classic one-liners,
21:15Everything or Nothing is everything Bond fans have always wanted
21:17from the 007 series and more.
21:22Oh, James.
21:25What was that for?
21:27Call it a hint of bigger things to come.
21:30The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King.
21:33And the dead keep it.
21:34The way is shut.
21:36Malice lies heavy in the air.
21:39The Lord of the Rings trilogy might be one of the defining film series of our childhood,
21:43and thankfully, we had numerous options to keep the Tolkien train rolling.
21:48While the Third Age and The Two Towers were amazing,
21:51few Lord of the Rings games compared to the incredible Return of the King.
21:55Everything about Return of the King,
21:56from the musical score to the deep, engaging, and customizable combat
22:00that made the game's traditional hack-and-slash combat far more rewarding,
22:04and an adventure worthy of the Lord of the Rings name.
22:07Along with more characters to play,
22:09The Return of the King expanded on the film
22:11and let players experience new storylines set within the timeline of the film,
22:15as well as an impressive amount of environmental destruction and interactivity.
22:19The ability to play through the entire campaign in co-op
22:22only made the fellowship with this one even stronger.
22:25For ourselves, there is no hope.
22:28This is our final act to give Frodo time.
22:31Time to end this evil that marshals before us.
