00:28il film is inspired by this some events that actually transpired some some real events and
00:36and I happen to be John Bishop on a boat I spent a lot of time on boats mainly barges
00:44in some tugs but I talk about tug yes everybody's you're right I always forget
00:51that yeah just cuz my maritime background but I I met John Bishop on a boat having
00:57lunch in Amsterdam anyway he the great John Bishop is a phenomenal comedian and he
01:03told me the story of how he got into stand-up and I love that is a it was it
01:10was such a great way into this into a story and then you know we started
01:15thinking about it and with uh Mark Chappell and then you know uh Bradley it is Bradley right
01:22yeah god for a second I thought if I don't get it right yeah then this is gonna be a
01:26bad
01:26it took you longer yesterday so we're improving so I'm shortening that
01:37forse sto divorziando quello che me lo ha fatto intuire che vivo in un appartamento da solo
01:46e mia moglie e miei figli non ci sono probabilmente è stato l'indizio più importante
01:52Bradley and I were talking about stuff we're working on I said I'm working on this idea and we're
01:55sort of here and and I actually said you know I'd love to get some thoughts
01:59because we're kind of stuck at what this is and he called me back pretty soon
02:03after and said I I want to direct this and I think that we should you guys we
02:08should go over here and he came in and the rest is I guess history um I don't know
02:14but that's that was sort of how it happened
02:27him yeah being friends with him for so long and uh and always being in awe of him
02:32and uh feeling like I'd never seen the guy that I know uh inhabit a role that that that utilized
02:39all
02:40his ability and I thought oh my gosh like if I could help shepherd that uh it was very exciting
02:46that that was the reason
03:04I mean I'm a huge fan of uh of Robert Altman obviously and and uh you know he I remember
03:10seeing Nashville as a kid and thinking well what's going on you know oh this is actually
03:14how people talk and and then and then honestly technically when I met Steve Morrow and I was
03:20talking about um on A Star is Born about how wanting to do scenes and you know having done
03:25other movies and being in editing rooms and knowing that like you can overlap dialogue you know you
03:30can and and the the extras don't have they can talk too there's a way to do it and and
03:34then you
03:35know just working with Steve three movies in you know we've really mastered he has mastered
03:39that ability uh so that just lends itself to when I'm writing you know always writing you know
03:44the two things happening at once you know in the you know in final drafts you know so so we
03:50we wrote
03:51to that you know that was because that's how people talk
04:01Bradley Cooper called me and that was kind of enough
04:04I was like great we're we're signed on and he's like no no no read the script Andrew I'm like
04:08okay but uh I'm in Bradley's kitchen he's describing the movie to me and he just looks at me and
04:25he's
04:25like you have to do this like you you see like you right you gotta do I I was like
04:35oh okay he's
04:36like yeah there's this story but it's all about the love story like it's it's not about what you find
04:51it's that you get honest enough with yourself that you could find your way back to each other
04:56or toward each other or toward anyone else you know and he just started riffing and dreaming and
05:04saying let's go on this ride together let's find her together which directors say that
05:13they don't always mean it because they say here's the imprint you know can you fit into it
05:19the trust that Will and Mark Chappell in the original script and then Bradley as he infused
05:33his point of view on it as a filmmaker and a writer you know to really let me in to
05:39really say
05:40who is she what does she do what are her goals her dreams of course she's a professional athlete
05:45okay start training and you know what does she bring to this brokenness not just to this hopeful
05:58journey and it was an amazing ride and filled with vulnerability and truth and promise for each of us
06:09as individuals in terms of our own growth not only you know hopefully as actors and storytellers was
06:15amazing experience
06:19everything's going to be talking everything's live everything's happening at once and it lends itself
06:23to this so you say feels improvised well it's just because life is happening it's all in the script but
06:28it's all happening in this very live real way and it was very I gotta say refreshing it wasn't
06:35it was never approached like that and you know you just kind of I just went with it because that's
06:41the
06:41and he's like no this is how we're doing it and to be honest it was incredibly freeing and and
06:47it and
06:48it lent itself to this sort of free-flowing atmosphere
06:57I will never forget how he presented it it was just in the most humble way he was just like
07:06oh I hope you're interested you know it's it's not a lot of real estate I was like you gotta
07:11be kidding
07:11me right now I was like and I keep joking I'm like I don't care if I had like one
07:16line in this
07:16I'm doing it uh but then he he uh describes to me you know will and writing the script and
07:24how he
07:24came about and it being based truly on the life of um John Bishop and then he says the two
07:30words
07:30Laura Dern and I was like oh my god so you know it just really felt like an incredible blessing
07:37to be
07:38considered and um and and then he we talked about the character you know and I loved her I loved
07:45where we find her in this movie I love that she is peak truth teller uh and so it was
07:54it was really
07:54just about embarking on this journey with with him and with the rest of the cast and you know
08:00combing through myself to bring as much of myself my whole self um to to this character
08:09but yeah he's always the funniest guy in the room I idolized him when I was younger
08:14and I just thought um I kind of want people to feel the way I feel about him that that's
08:19actually
08:19what it was I was like I think that we could write something and make a movie where people
08:24will feel the way I do about you you know what I mean like you know what I'm saying yeah
08:32quello che mi piace di te è che sei innocente non sei ingenuo sei innocente sei buono insomma
08:37pessimo nella stand-up ma buono hai buon cuore
