00:00Let us come together and let us expand the St. Augustine campus and know that Pinal de Bay is not
00:11a campus. There is the St. Augustine campus at Pinal de Bay.
00:20As in Jamaica, it is the Montego Bay institution of the Mona campus. So let us get together and do
00:32this with all the dignity that we know exists within our culture of our university.
00:38As work continues on the Pinal de Bay U.E. institution, with a view to opening in the new academic
00:45year, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, is seeking to make the distinction
00:53that the U.E. de Bay is not a stand-alone campus.
00:56Nevertheless, he says Pinal de Bay is a magnificent enterprise, as he reaffirmed the university's gratitude to Prime Minister Kamala
01:05Persad-Bissessa.
01:06We regret very much the pain and the anxiety and all of those negative experiences that the Prime Minister has
01:20had to undergo in seeing that vision come to magnificent fruition.
01:26I have engaged with the government on this matter.
01:33I have given the government my pledge that I will take full frontal responsibility for the implementation of Pinal de
01:50Bay, given its significance to our university.
01:57The government had indicated that it will determine which courses are to be offered at Pinal de Bay, in collaboration
02:03with the U.E.
02:04The government is footing the bill for the construction and rehabilitation of the institution.
02:10Pinal de Bay will rise with the dignity that it deserves, and it will have our collective determination.
02:20The university had previously intimated that the facility would house the faculty of law.
02:26However, according to Professor Beckles, Pinal de Bay will form part of the medical spine.
02:32It will be a part of what has been described as the medical spine.
02:39We are here at the St. Augustine location.
02:46We now have before us the Coover engagement, and we have beyond that Pinal de Bay.
02:56Now, is that not a medical spine of potential from Mount Hope to Coover to Pinal?
03:07That, looking into the future, could be a Silicon Valley for this country.
03:17Professor Beckles was speaking at the U.E. St. Augustine Campus Council meeting.
