00:00On the mound today for opening day for the Cubs, it is the veteran Southpaw, 35 years old, Matthew Boyd.
00:07Yeah, certainly an honor well-deserved with the performance he put in last year with the Cubs 14-8 with
00:12a 3.21 ERA.
00:14This will be the third time in his career he's had an opening day assignment.
00:17He did it twice with Detroit in 20-21.
00:20This is his 200th career regular season start, and last year he led the Cubs with 179 of two-thirds
00:26innings and 154 strikeouts.
00:28One of his best years as a Michigan game.
00:30Yeah, he did.
00:31That is goosebump-inducing stuff.
00:34Matthew Boyd today going up against James Wood and the Washington Nationals.
00:40They were 66-96 a season ago.
00:43They were 13th in the NL, 20th in the majors in runs per game.
00:48Chaparro in second.
00:49House in the third spot.
00:51Dalen Lyle bears watching.
00:53Weimer gets a start.
00:54Abrams in short.
00:55Nunez, Ruiz, and Jacob Young.
00:57Great defender.
00:58And the Nationals lineup has been the majors in runs per game.
01:02Chaparro in second.
01:03House in the third spot.
01:05Dalen Lyle bears watching.
01:07Weimer gets a start.
01:08Abrams in short.
01:09Nunez, Ruiz, and Jacob Young.
01:11Great defender.
01:12And the Nationals lineup is presented by four.
01:15So ready to roll here.
01:17Opening day 20-26 here at Wrigley.
01:22And the South ball from Sammamish, Washington delivers.
01:26And a swing and a miss.
01:28And we're underway at Wrigley.
01:30And no surprise to see Matthew Boyd up top with a foreseeing fastball.
01:33That's a big part of his arsenal.
01:40And a swing and a miss and a great start for Boyd.
01:50And a couple of haters.
01:51And he goes to the breaking ball.
01:53And boom, boom, boom.
01:54Down goes Wood.
01:55You see that sweeper running off that outside corner.
01:58Wood, who strikes out a lot 32% of the time last year.
02:02And he punches out here to get 20-26 underway.
02:06So a one away, and now it's through there for a strike.
02:10Alan Porter is our plate umpire.
02:13He's the crew chief, along with Jim Wolfe for Brayle-Ortiz and Alex McKay.
02:21And a swing and a miss and a great start for Boyd.
02:28A couple of haters.
02:29And he goes to the breaking ball.
02:30And boom, boom, boom.
02:31Down goes Wood.
02:32You see that sweeper running off that outside corner.
02:35And now it's Andrew Wood, who strikes out a lot, 32% of the time last year.
02:39And he punches out here to get 20-26 underway.
02:43So a one away, and now it is Andres Chaparro who gets the start at first base for the Nats.
02:51And this one drilled in the air center field.
02:54Pete Armstrong back onto the track and hauls it in.
03:00I don't think there's any question that the wind was knocking that down.
03:08J.D. wants some keys.
03:09Yeah, they're brought to you by your local Hyundai dealers.
03:12And we're off.
03:13Here we go.
03:13The marathon starts today.
03:15Book of Matthew.
03:16We've been focusing on Matthew Boyd.
03:17He had an outstanding year last year.
03:20And knock on Wood, James Wood, their leadoff man, who struck out a very dangerous bat, though,
03:25at the top of their order.
03:26I hit 31 home runs last year.
03:29Drove in 94.
03:31Four pitches to us as Boyd fires in a strike to Brady House.
03:45And a swing and a miss.
03:47So Boyd going with the short sleeves on a day that started off kind of warm,
03:52and now the temperatures have dropped.
03:54We knew a front was moving in.
03:56It's gotten here a little bit sooner than we anticipated.
03:58Here comes the crowd.
04:02I know that's your line, but I like to use it every now and then.
04:09Taking a shot at that outside corner.
04:12A little bit off the edge.
04:16Swing and a miss.
04:17Struck him out.
04:20One, two, three.
04:21They go.
04:22The Cubs, led by Alex Bregman, will come up to him.
04:28Went first.
04:29No score.
04:30Michael Bush back into that leadoff spot.
04:33The Cubs batting order.
04:35It'll go Bush, Bregman, and half.
04:36PCA, Horner, and Kelly, by a sterile to DH, Swanson.
04:40And Matt Shaw gets the start in right field with Sayah Suzuki on the IL.
04:48Kate Cavalli on the mound for the Nationals.
04:51Yeah, Cavalli, big hard-throwing right-hander.
04:5322nd overall pick out of Oklahoma in 2020.
04:56Pretty much missed all of 23 and 24 coming back from the big leagues last year.
05:01And here's some good gas for you at 97 miles per hour.
05:06Yes, he was coming up.
05:07He was a guy that could reach triple digits.
05:11As he faces Michael Bush here.
05:14Bush settled into the leadoff spot in July last year.
05:19One of the challenges for Cavalli would just be to manage the emotions for any pitcher on opening day.
05:24But for a guy with limited experience, you think it might be a little bit more of an issue.
05:29His mustache would tell you otherwise.
05:32It'd be the 1-1.
05:35That mustache says, I got this.
05:39Well, he made his debut in August of 22.
05:43Don't believe he had that mustache thing.
05:45So, he had to deal with Alex Bregman next.
05:50But after injury, Tommy John surgery in March of 23, he went over 1,000 days between big league appearances.
05:57Down the third baseline, fair ball, rolling towards the side wall.
06:02Bush towards second, and he's in.
06:11He just kind of blocked it the other way.
06:13The man in scoring position.
06:19Thierry Beesman, number three, Alex Bregman.
06:26If you don't leave me, baby, don't leave me all the way.
06:31Don't ask for all you.
06:37So Bregman, an opportunity immediately.
06:43The first offering misses for ball one.
06:47Bregman was limited to 114.
06:50J.D., he really knows the strikes.
06:52Yeah, he's got a great eye.
06:53He's a good high ball hitter.
06:55You see Cavalli trying to run those sinkers down and in under his hands.
07:00Four seamers out of way and up a little bit.
07:02He really is capable of getting on top and doing damage with that pitch.
07:09That one misses.
07:13And Ruiz last year at the Red Sox had a quad injury,
07:16and the Cubs pounced on him in the offseason,
07:19signed him with a five-year deal.
07:23The 1-0.
07:26J.D., he really knows the strikes.
07:28Yeah, he's got a great eye.
07:29He's a good high ball hitter.
07:31You see Cavalli trying to run those sinkers down and in under his hands.
07:36Four seamers out of way and up a little bit.
07:38He really is capable of getting on top and doing damage with that pitch.
07:45That one misses, and Ruiz immediately.
07:51Catcher is challenging the ball call.
07:55A.B.S. is powered by T-Mobile as we take a look.
08:00And that, indeed, a strong return.
08:03Washington has two remaining.
08:07So much talk about how managers are going to deploy these challenges,
08:10and one of the things we hear time and time again
08:12is they're going to keep them in their back pocket,
08:14but high-leverage situation coming here in the first inning
08:17and a challenge well used by the Nats.
08:22The 2-1 swing and a miss.
08:26There's a high fastball.
08:28I talked about Bregman.
08:29Capable of getting on top of that pitch,
08:31but that one's pretty juicy at 98 miles per hour.
08:40Bush out there at second,
08:42so the Cubs with a threat near the early going.
08:47Cavalli sets.
08:50And a 2-2 pop foul out of play.
08:57Alex Bregman,
08:57it was the second overall pick in the 2015 draft out of LSU,
09:01just right after Dansby Swanson.
09:06And an All-Star three times.
09:08He's won a gold glove.
09:09And just a few picks ahead of Ian Happ being selected by the Cubs.
09:13And went to, like, number nine overall that year.
09:19He's got a good eye.
09:20Cavalli ready.
09:21Here's a 2-2.
09:23There's that good eye from Bregman.
09:26Guy who does not chase a lot.
09:28And I would say that overall,
09:30that's something that will be a strength for the Cubs.
09:33A team is going to impact that in a positive way.
09:36Well, the guy would just show to Ian Happ.
09:39On the ground, towards the hall, diving play by House.
09:43And he throws out Bregman.
09:49Well, Michael Bush got things started.
09:51A little check swing double.
09:52That double is brought to you by OJ.
09:55Number 20-year and a 200,000-mile warranty on every new car.
10:04And he's gonna get high marks for artistic merit.
10:07And he gets the job done.
10:09Well, under 80 miles an hour.
10:11But in the second.
10:17And he in half takes a strike
10:19from Kate Cavalli.
10:24Don't get high marks for
10:26artistic merit.
10:27It gets the job done.
10:29Well under 80 miles an hour but
10:32in the second.
10:34Questioning that pitch a little
10:35bit but not enough to challenge.
10:44He'll want and half fouls it
10:47straight back when Cavalli is on.
10:51He'll get a lot of ground balls.
10:53He's got some cut and ride to
10:55that fastball.
10:56He'll throw a sinker but it's
10:59that big old curveball that
11:01generates a lot of the ground
11:02balls so questioning that pitch a
11:05little bit but not enough to
11:08challenge.
11:13He made from half good change
11:15up 91 miles an hour.
11:20I don't think he really wanted
11:21to throw his change up right
11:22through the heart of the zone
11:23like that he'll want and half
11:26fouls it straight back when
11:28Cavalli is on.
11:31He'll get a lot of ground balls.
11:33He's got some pretty got away
11:34with it and getting a sense of
11:36how good his arm is a change up
11:38at 92.
11:42And here's Pete Crowe Armstrong
11:45BCA had a birthday yesterday
11:47turned 24.
11:53He made from half good change up
11:5591 miles an hour.
12:00I don't think he really wanted to
12:01throw his change up right through
12:03the heart of the zone like that.
12:05Cavalli drops that knuckle curve
12:07in there.
12:07It's a curve ball and it's 86
12:10miles an hour.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Apparently he's tweaked his grip
12:13a little bit.
12:14He'll throw a little bit of a
12:15sweep or two with that pitch but
12:16that's a good kind of oh oh
12:18find the zone breaking pitch and
12:20it wasn't sloppy either.
12:22I had a lot of play.
12:25Ball to strike now.
12:27Pete Crowe Armstrong.
12:29Cavalli's big dude.
12:306'4 to 23.
12:43The 1-1 and Cavalli drops that
12:46knuckle curve in there.
12:48It's a curve ball and it's 86
12:50miles an hour.
12:51Yeah.
12:52Apparently he's tweaked his
12:53grip a little bit and he'll
12:54throw a little bit of a sweep
12:55or two with that pitch but
12:56that's a good kind of oh oh
12:59find the zone breaking pitch
13:00and it wasn't sloppy either.
13:02I had a lot of play.
13:05Ball to strike now.
13:08Pete Crowe Armstrong.
13:09Cavalli's big dude.
13:106'4 to 23.
13:23The 1-1.
13:25For a minute that they hit Pete
13:26in the back foot.
13:29Definitely offered at it.
13:33Did hit him.
13:34Did hit him.
13:37But that should be arguing that
13:39Bush needs to go back to
13:40second base.
13:40No.
13:41Oh no because it was a swing.
13:42My bad.
13:43Baseball rules.
13:44You have to.
13:46Awkward swing.
13:48And down to third.
13:50Goes Michael Bush.
13:51On a pitch.
13:52In the dirt.
13:54Burn him again every year.
13:55Well.
13:56You know.
13:58How many outs do you get in
14:00inning group.
14:01It's going to be three until
14:02further notice.
14:04And then.
14:05For a minute that they hit
14:06Pete in the back foot.
14:09Definitely offered at it.
14:13Did hit him.
14:14Did hit him.
14:17But that should be arguing
14:19that Bush needs to go back
14:20to second base.
14:20No.
14:21Oh no because it was a swing.
14:22My bad.
14:23Baseball rules.
14:24You have to learn them again
14:24every year.
14:25Well.
14:26You know.
14:29How many outs do you get in
14:30inning group.
14:31It's going to be three until
14:32further notice.
14:34And now.
14:34Hundreds of my corn's ferns.
14:36Unfortunately I did not check
14:38just how permanent my body
14:39paint was.
14:43Your student body president
14:45Steven Long.
14:48Checking Allstate first was a
14:49great idea.
14:51Not checking if the body
14:52paint was permanent.
14:53Not my finest moment.
14:55Yeah.
14:56Check Allstate first.
14:57You can save hundreds.
14:58Rock Chalk.
15:00That swordfish won me the
15:02tournament.
15:03I once had an eight.
15:04That is in there.
15:05Got him looking.
15:06Cavalli pitches around the
15:07leadoff double and Bush left
15:09stranded.
15:10A light bulb hadn't been
15:11invented.
15:11You listen.
15:12Big time speed.
15:170-2.
15:19Drilled right field.
15:20Pretty well struck.
15:22Shaw back.
15:22Back some more.
15:24Oh and he made the catch.
15:26Welcome to right field at
15:28Wrigley, Matt.
15:30Talking to Craig Townsville
15:31before the game about Matt
15:32Shaw and his playing right
15:34field.
15:34He said well he's a work in
15:36progress out there and you
15:37can see it here.
15:38Not an easy right field to
15:40play.
15:40A windy day here in Wrigley.
15:42Kind of drifts on this one but
15:43ultimately able to make the
15:44play.
15:47Yeah I mean that right there to
15:49me is Matt Shaw's a really good
15:51athlete and that's how he made
15:53that play.
15:53You know what I'm saying?
15:54Because it can't be easy with
15:56the wind.
15:59You know the conditions today
16:00as it gets colder and colder.
16:04Joey Weimer swings through a
16:05pitch.
16:10Chad Hoyer fielded a lot of
16:12questions about Matt Shaw and
16:13right field as well.
16:14He pointed to last season,
16:15Boog, to your point about
16:16athleticism.
16:17Think about Matt Shaw, the
16:18defender, opening day in Japan
16:20against Matt Shaw towards the
16:22end of the season over at third
16:23base.
16:23He's completely grew throughout
16:24the course of the season and
16:26they're hopeful and expectant
16:27that he will do the same in
16:28right field.
16:29Yeah and I think Taylor to your
16:31point and Jets point, they
16:33wondered about him at third last
16:35year.
16:36That one lifted in the air left
16:38field and Weimer will touch a
16:40ball.
16:42A high fly ball to left and Weimer
16:45has given the Nationals a one
16:47nothing lead.
16:54He really juiced out and wind
16:56blowing from left to right
16:58blowing in so this one didn't
17:00get any help.
17:00That's a big swing.
17:03Big leg kick and explosive swing
17:06in the back and that's a danger
17:07zone.
17:08Go change up and you have it drift
17:10into the swing of the right
17:11handed hitter.
17:13And for Weimer, you know, limited
17:16big league experience, but when
17:18he has thrived, it has been
17:20against left handed pitching
17:21for Boyd the home run ball last
17:24year, he gave up 19 of them.
17:28Abrams comes up empty, right?
17:30And for a guy who's a fly ball
17:31pitcher, that's not a bad number
17:34for shit.
17:38C.J. Abrams, the all-star a season
17:40ago.
17:42Some misses like Wood, very talented
17:45like Wood.
17:47He started off last year great.
17:50Both those guys were all-stars and
17:52they both faded in the second half.
17:55Boyd ready a 1-2.
18:00It's a very young Nationals roster
18:02team that has really struggled in
18:04recent seasons as Boots had off the
18:06top 66 and 96 last year.
18:09They finished 30 games out in the
18:10NL East.
18:13The 1-2.
18:14Swing and a miss.
18:16Struck him out.
18:17And for Boyd, his third.
18:19It's not just a young roster.
18:20It's a young front office.
18:26It's a young manager.
18:28Yeah.
18:30And there's Blake Butera.
18:3333 years old.
18:34He's one of eight new managers.
18:37The youngest active manager in the
18:40majors.
18:40In fact, the youngest manager since
18:431972.
18:45And your buddy, Frank Quillese,
18:48was the manager of the A's at the
18:50age of 33.
18:51Back in 1973.
18:53He's from Chicago, by the way.
18:54Frank Frank was.
18:56St. Mel's High School.
19:01So Butera's back October 30th, 2025.
19:05But that is not the part he'll
19:07remember that day.
19:08That was the day his first child
19:11was born.
19:11Oh, wow.
19:12Really?
19:12Yeah.
19:15So Butera taking over.
19:18Remember, they fired Davey Martinez
19:19on July 6th last year.
19:21Mike Rizzo as well.
19:23Turned it over to Miguel Cairo.
19:25And then they hired Paul Taboney,
19:28who's just 36 years old, from the
19:30Boston Red Sox.
19:31Taboney had no connection to Blake Butera.
19:35He just knew of him through Mike Gambino
19:38when Gambino was the head coach at B.C.
19:40Gambino now at Penn State.
19:43And that is a great pitch.
19:48Boyd gets the strikeout.
19:50His fourth up.
19:52Nico Horner at the plate.
19:55It'll go Horner, then Kelly,
19:57and then Ballesteros against Kate Cavalli.
20:01Nico put together a great year last year.
20:05They're second in the National League
20:06in batting average.
20:09And fourth in the NL
20:11in baseball reference.
20:13Wins above replacement.
20:15Played that great defense.
20:17Deservedly won
20:18his second gold glove.
20:28Cavalli ready.
20:29Here comes the 0-1.
20:42play Niko the other way in the outfield.
20:44Really shortened up in center and in right.
20:57Looking at the corner last year and.
21:02We need clean pitchers.
21:04That's.
21:05Where he ranks.
21:06I mean, that's impressive and really elite-level company.
21:10As far as National League wins above.
21:15Talked about the the defensive value he brings in the base running base stealing.
21:20Big part of it with Nico as well.
21:24Yeah, it's another thing the Cubs did well last year.
21:27They were third in the majors in total stolen bases.
21:30When you combo that with the fact that they were second in the majors in stolen base percentage.
21:40Order swings and misses and Cavalli overwhelms him.
21:46Cubs and Nats off tomorrow but back at it this weekend.
21:50Tickets are still available for both matchups Saturday and Sunday.
21:53It's yours now at Cubs.com slash tickets.
21:57Tickets.
21:58Your tickets.
22:03There's Carson Kelly now.
22:05Kelly near number two with the Cubs.
22:10Nationals lead one nothing.
22:17Volley fastball has been firm.
22:34In the air out towards right center field.
22:37That's pretty well struck.
22:38Going back is Wehmer.
22:39And he hauls it in as he was fighting the wind.
22:43You can see the smile on his face.
22:51And with two down and it'll be Moises Ballesteros.
23:05There's Moe Big at 57 at bats.
23:09Season to go is brilliant in triple A.
23:13Time now for the Intelligent Center.
23:16Powered by CDW and AMD.
23:19Cubs number one prospects making opening day starts.
23:22And Ballesteros this year.
23:26Shaw last year.
23:32He could really hit.
23:34And it all comes packaged.
23:40In a way where he doesn't strike out a ton.
23:47You know, if you're looking for a comp from, like, my generation, then why wouldn't you be?
23:53Like a John Kruk type hitter.
23:56I like it.
23:57Line drives.
23:57This is the whole field.
23:58Yep.
24:05Oh, what's it?
24:08I'm not sure.
24:10But there is a tapper.
24:12Ask him for time.
24:14Yep.
24:15Right on the edge.
24:19Sorry, Alan Porter.
24:23I would have just burned a challenge right there.
24:26Two, two of the way.
24:28Good take.
24:29And that's what you talk about.
24:30You know, great hitters have high hand coordination.
24:32They pick up spin early.
24:34They read the ball out of the hand.
24:35They make good swing decisions.
24:37All of those things apply to this very young, talented hitter.
24:45Three, two.
24:47And that one fouled into the mitt of Rui.
24:50Of the third, Matthew Boyd on the mound, making his first opening day start with the Chicago Cubs,
24:56the third one of his career.
24:57He told me it's moments like this that remind him of his grandfather, John.
25:01John grew up in Chicago and was a lifelong Cubs fan,
25:05and in turn passed along a love of baseball and a love of the Chicago Cubs down to Matthew.
25:10Here's a photo of them together, Boyd about five years old in this one.
25:14And you can see that Cubs hat he's wearing.
25:16He told me that was a gift from his grandfather,
25:18and he wore it his entire childhood as well as a T-shirt jersey.
25:23So those things, staples in his closet growing up.
25:26But he told me in college after every start he would call his grandfather.
25:29And the number one piece of advice he always got was to just keep working harder.
25:34He also would tell him about his favorite Cubs throughout the years,
25:37Fergie Jenkins, Ron Santo, Ryan Sandberg,
25:39and then later it became the 2016 team.
25:42Well, his favorite player on that team was the one, Kyle Hendricks.
25:46And it got to the point where Boyd was in the major leagues in 2016,
25:50and he had to tell his grandpa,
25:52look, I understand your love of Hendricks,
25:54but you have to understand we're basically the same age.
25:57I think you need to focus a little bit more on your grandson being your favorite player.
26:01So they shared a lot of laughs over that one,
26:03but I can only imagine how proud John is and have been smiling on this day.
26:08Yeah, Matthew Boyd, I talked to him about getting the opening day start.
26:12That one laced down the left side, and that is foul.
26:18And I said, look, I know you've been an opening day starter before,
26:22but now you're the opening day starter for the Chicago Cubs.
26:27This is a team with a lot of expectations, a playoff team from a season ago.
26:31You get to start opening day at Wrigley Field, and he said, yeah, I just got goosebumps.
26:36And he said, I'm honored to be the Cubs opening day starter.
26:42And it kind of ties into something that Taylor mentioned earlier about Craig Council.
26:46To be opening day starter on this team, you know, for a team that is expected to really contend and
26:54compete.
26:55Good pitch right there as he got to chase on the changeup.
26:59Maybe the best changeup he's thrown so far here today.
27:01That's five strikeouts already for Matthew.
27:04We've seen the high fastball, the breaking pitch, and now the changeup getting the job done.
27:12Yeah, one of the things I really like about Matthew Boyd is, you know,
27:15a lot of guys in that situation would kind of, yeah, no, no big deal.
27:19You know, just he's very honest, really appreciates the moment.
27:34So, yeah, yeah, just soo-like.
27:40Corners in with Jacob Young up here.
27:43Young who can really scoot, struggles with the back,
27:47but his brilliant defensively.
27:51When you think about good defensive center fielders,
27:55Not named Pete, bro Armstrong,
27:59young say Don Raffaella.
28:01This guy can really go get it.
28:07Yeah, as mentioned.
28:09Yeah, there's the leader.
28:12Yeah, there's PCA and then.
28:15Then the next tier.
28:201-2.
28:21Swing and a miss.
28:23Overwhelmed him with a heater.
28:24That one at 95.
28:30It's kind of like Matthew Boyd is saying
28:32you can't hit my fastball.
28:35I don't need to bother trying to trick you here.
28:40Just really tardy on that elevated four seamer.
28:54Nationals near the bottom of the league in just about every offensive category last year.
28:57They hit just 2 28 as a team against left handed pitching.
29:05What generally though hangs in there against lefties.
29:08He's got good power the other way.
29:10It's a lot of home runs to left field.
29:21A lot of punch outs.
29:25Typically you'll see a lot of pitches.
29:26He'll take his walks as well.
29:28But yeah, there's plenty of swing and miss in there.
29:33Swing and a miss.
29:34And how about Boyd?
29:35He strikes out the side.
29:37He's punched out seven here today for the Nationals.
29:40The early lead John Chomby and Jim Deshaies
29:43joined by the manager down in the dugout.
29:46Happy opening day to you, sir.
29:48How are you, Craig Council?
29:49I'm great to you guys as well.
29:51I saw you got some new glasses there.
29:53Those are nice.
29:55Yeah, I like them.
29:56Helps to see.
29:57I know it does.
29:58Tell me what you've seen from Matthew Boyd so far.
30:01Yeah, I mean, he pulled the change up to Weaver.
30:05And that's what that's what happens to pull change ups, unfortunately.
30:09But obviously the swing and miss is always good to see.
30:12And, you know, the fastball up has been effective
30:14and just kind of countering the change up with not letting him sit on off speed.
30:19Practice is kind of an open ended question.
30:22But what do you like most about your club coming out of spring training?
30:27Yeah, I mean, I think look, it's it's it's a lot of the same faces, especially in the field as
30:33we had last year.
30:34And I think it was a good position player group.
30:36I mean, my favorite thing is the defense we play.
30:38That would be kind of the thing that I like the best.
30:41I think we're just really, really good all over the field.
30:44And I think we have some of the best defenders in the game in a couple positions.
30:47And just it really helps, you know, with run prevention.
30:50It makes us, you know, it's a it's a part of the game that doesn't necessarily get slumps.
30:55You've done a lot of winning as a player and as a manager this offseason.
31:00On a personal note, you got to watch some winning as a dad.
31:04Your daughter, Rowan, won the state title in Wisconsin for girls basketball.
31:10Where's that one ranked for you now?
31:12It was great.
31:13I mean, it was awesome.
31:14I got to watch my son win a baseball state high school baseball tournament.
31:18This was just as good.
31:19It was close, close game.
31:21So it was it was something else to watch.
31:24And yeah, I mean, you don't you can't trade those moments for anything.
31:27Awesome stuff counts.
31:29Good luck.
31:29Thanks.
31:30All right, guys.
31:31Have a good one.
31:33Yeah, look at that.
31:35I love it.
31:39His youngest daughter rolling.
31:41Yeah, you got a chance to see Jack win a state baseball title in Wisconsin.
31:46Jack now playing over at Northwestern.
32:013-2 to Swanson.
32:03And Danesby will take his base.
32:06So the leadoff man is aboard.
32:09The Cubs got the leadoff guy on near the bottom of the first,
32:12but weren't able to do anything with it.
32:14Now it'll bring up Matt Shaw.
32:17Looked like Kamala was trying to execute it down and away.
32:19Sinker there right on right.
32:21That's a tough pitch to execute, and he really pulled it.
32:23And a non-competitive pitch.
32:25Easy one for Danesby to lay off.
32:28And now it's Matt Shaw.
32:30Shaw getting the start and right with, say, a Suzuki hurt.
32:36And that one finds the mark.
32:38For Suzuki, the questions remain, when will he be back?
32:42We'll see.
32:44This one right there, called by Alan Porter.
32:54That one thrown away, Swanson locates it, gets up, and he'll race to second.
32:59So a throwing error by the pitcher.
33:02And on the pickoff attempt now, man, in scoring position.
33:08I thought at some point Danesby might be on the move there.
33:10We talked at the beginning of the game how this guy's an extreme ground ball pitchers.
33:16Aaron throw.
33:17Chaparro not able to bail him out.
33:19He should have been able to knock that ball down.
33:20The error will go on the throw, but there's some culpability in the play for soccer as well there.
33:31Culpability?
33:32Culpability.
33:33Culpability.
33:34Give him half an error.
33:35Yeah.
33:36Half an error each.
33:38So down man at second.
33:42And nobody out.
33:44Shaw.
33:45You're mentioning, say, Suzuki.
33:49Maybe the second part of the road trip more likely when the Cubs return home from the road.
33:58Shaw shortens to punt.
34:09Bunt for a base hit as part of the toolbox for Shaw.
34:15We want him looking to give himself up here just to advance the baserunner.
34:19Not this early in the game.
34:22Corners creeping in.
34:24Swanson at second.
34:25The 1-1.
34:29Ouchie.
34:30Shaw last year made the team at a spring training.
34:33Got sent down middle of April.
34:36Stayed down until a little past the middle of May.
34:40And when he came back, really settled in defensively.
34:43And then in the second half, it was the defense that had been there.
34:49But he swung the bat well in the second half.
34:51Yeah, it kind of scuffled a little bit at the very end and then in the postseason.
34:55But yeah, when he first came back from the minor leagues, I remember that one series in Cincinnati.
34:59And he was just driving the ball to right center.
35:06One two misses outside.
35:09Yeah, he had a second half OPS of 839, which is second best on the team.
35:17He was pulling the ball in the air more.
35:21See the overall numbers for Shaw last year.
35:24He's got Swanson at second, two and two.
35:34Opening day and they got their pick off booze.
35:37Yes.
35:38Yeah.
35:38Waiting all offseason to rain down on an opposing pitcher.
35:49Last foul redirects into the Nationals dugout.
35:56So far, I've had a hard time with that fastball from Savali and, of course, the curveball plays as well.
36:02We'll see if the lineup turns over, they're able to make some adjustments.
36:102-2.
36:12Well, they're projected by fan graphs to allow the most runs in the majors.
36:16They didn't pitch real well last year.
36:18Only the Rockies had a worse ERA.
36:21Their bullpen was especially bad.
36:24Here's the other part.
36:25They don't defend well.
36:26So, that's one area where they're hoping it'll get better.
36:293-2.
36:31Pitch.
36:33Fly ball right field.
36:35Weamer throws the line.
36:37Weamer makes the catch.
36:38Once it'll tag.
36:44And one down and a man in third.
36:46J.D., you know what time it is?
36:47Yeah, what time is it?
36:48Time to play mouth ball.
36:49All presented by Tasty Trade.
36:52If the ball stayed on the mound, the cup season ticket holder, Chris Simic,
36:56with a won the $1,000 Tasty Trade jackpot.
37:00Unfortunately, it did not.
37:02And Chris didn't win.
37:04Tasty Trade stocks, options, futures crypto.
37:08Chris, I'm sorry.
37:09Come on, Al.
37:10Clean it up.
37:13Maybe she'll get a little help from the little spike cleaner back there behind the rubber.
37:20Infield comes in with Michael Bush at the plate.
37:27Bushy rolled a double inside the bag down the third baseline near the bottom of the first.
37:46Kirk Council plugged Michael Bush into the leadoff spot July 13th.
37:52He had the Bronx against the Yankees.
37:55You remember, J.D., what happened?
37:57What happened?
37:58The homer to lead off the game against Will Warren.
38:02And he had five leadoff homers last year.
38:0716 as a leadoff hitter.
38:13In the air out towards left center.
38:17And that one sinking.
38:18And it falls for a hit.
38:20The wind knocks it down.
38:21Densby's in.
38:22And we're tied at one.
38:25An RBI bloop single.
38:28And Bush gets the Cubs out of the board.
38:31And the Bush now batting a robust 2,000.
38:34Here's 20, 40 seconds.
38:35And how about his two hits?
38:37A little half swing.
38:38Excuse me.
38:38Roll it down the third baseline.
38:40And now this little flare in the center.
38:44And the wind gets a hold of it.
38:47He's not a good outfielder.
38:53Coming up short.
38:54Good effort.
38:55It's a tough read.
39:01And now Bregman takes out of the strike zone.
39:09Alex grounded to third his first time.
39:24If you're keeping a scorebook at home and you really want to.
39:27Get into the details.
39:29Both hits for Michael Bush today left the bat at 77.
39:32Miles per hour.
39:33Generally don't turn into hits.
39:38But he's cagey that way.
39:44Bregman takes a pitch for a strike.
39:53Alex who hails from New Mexico.
40:04The 2-1.
40:06That's downstairs.
40:08Talked about Bregman and his ability to get on top of the high fastball.
40:11And I remember years ago he was being interviewed and he talked about setting his sights actually above the ball.
40:17Like it's trying to swing above the baseball.
40:21Yeah.
40:27The 3-1.
40:29And a good eye.
40:30And that is ball four.
40:33So Bregman will take his base for Cavalli when he has struggled in the minors.
40:38The issue at times has been walks.
40:51No doubt but a frustrating inning for him.
40:54Lead off walk to Dansby then he commits the error.
40:59Little blooper off the bat of Bush and now he walks Bregman.
41:04Simon Matthews out to visit.
41:07We talked about how young they are.
41:09So you got a manager who's 33.
41:10You got a GM who's 36.
41:13The pitching coach is 30.
41:15This guy who was an assistant pitching coach for Derrick Johnson in Cincinnati last year.
41:21I asked DJ, give me something on Simon Matthews.
41:25He said he is a stud.
41:26He's a smart human.
41:28He's young.
41:29But he gets it.
41:30And I'm super proud of him.
41:32He has connections to the folks at Driveline.
41:36And again, you know, they've ushered in a new era in Washington with analytics and technology, etc.
41:51He's getting better.
41:52Did he speaking of young?
41:55Hey, we got a quality baby in Alabama.
41:58I know Roger.
41:59Roger Hoover.
42:01Yes.
42:04Carson's ready.
42:09Your one swing and a miss.
42:12Good let up.
42:15How does the strikeout pitch last time he actually struck out Ian with a bad changeup.
42:20It was top of the zone to 92 miles an hour.
42:23This is this is the one he's looking for the swing and miss.
42:33And half comes up empty.
42:35Big spot for a strikeout.
42:37And there's two down.
42:39When the Cubs walk it off at Wrigley this season he could score a trip to circuit resort and casino
42:45in Las Vegas.
42:46Scam the QR code on the screen now.
42:48The winner of the circus sports walk off the Vegas sweepstakes for your chance to win.
43:02On the ground and through the right side base hit.
43:07Around third coming in.
43:09And Busch is in.
43:12And out at third against Bregman.
43:19So the Cubs take the lead.
43:21Pete Crowe Armstrong delivers Armstrong's first hit of the year as given the Cubs the lead.
43:28It is 2-1.
43:30And that wind is really whipping.
43:35Some rain in the forecast for later in the day.
43:47It's starting to sprinkle though.
43:49Would not be surprised.
43:55Those flags are starched.
43:57Whipping.
44:03Line drop right field.
44:05Shaw hits over his head.
44:08And Matt will go collect it.
44:11Chaparro to second.
44:12He'll stop there.
44:18Time for our Infinity Cutting Edge moment.
44:21Experience their luxury SUVs today.
44:24RBI single.
44:25PCA gets a breaking ball down.
44:27Stays back.
44:28Finds a hole on the right side of the diamond.
44:33Boy should reach on a bloop single.
44:36He streaks around the score.
44:37Bregman gets.
44:38Trying to.
44:39Go to third base on the play.
44:41Decision he probably wishes he would.
44:45Reconsider.
44:52Balls had two real good swings here today.
44:58Swing and a miss from Brady House.
45:08Cubs lead it to water in the top of the four.
45:11Who J.D. and T. Mac opening day here from Wrigley.
45:17Good to have the band back together.
45:22Opening day in baseball.
45:23It's like.
45:23It's like a holiday.
45:25Only you don't have any obnoxious relatives to deal with.
45:34Now do you think you have anybody listening.
45:37That's offended by that column.
45:38Well that's saying.
45:39Am I.
45:40Am I.
45:40Am I.
45:41No.
45:42Because I don't have any of those.
45:43I'm just.
45:43Just saying in general.
45:45Right.
45:45Some people.
45:48Hey.
45:48How's cousin Randy doing.
45:49I know he's not.
45:50In that.
45:51No.
45:51Because.
