00:03:41Pragmatic as ever is Max Verstappen, it's quite interesting stood here. The first person

00:03:49as well he might. He's kind of soaking it in, which I really like actually, he's kind of
00:03:54got a smile on his face, you can see he's nervous, there's a bit of tension there, but
00:03:57he's soaking it up to a degree and yeah, he's got this kind of like a puppy kind of energy,
00:04:02which I quite like. He's so refreshing. I mean, he just brought so much positive energy, hasn't
00:04:07he, to the sport? Yeah, he's a little bit strung up now, but you know, he's got that
00:04:10young attitude and he's a little bit under pressure. It's because once you start first,
00:04:16you cannot get any better in the race. There's a lot of pressure there. Starts huge in this
00:04:21early part of Formula One in 2026. Let's go to the skypad. Ant is there on that very subject.
00:04:27Well, it's a big day, a big occasion for our youngest Grand Prix pole sitter, Kimi Antonelli,
00:04:32but so far his starts haven't been that good this year, at least in a racing sense. This was him
00:04:37yesterday in the sprint race. Teammate George Russell alongside him, pulls away clearly. Kimi erupting
00:04:44in wheel spin after momentarily bogging down, overtaken by seven cars before the time he even
00:04:51gets to turn one. And like I say, it hasn't just been one occasion. This was in Australia last week,
00:04:57also sitting on second place on the grid. And it was a similar story. Lots of wheel spin again.
00:05:03George didn't particularly get a good start and all these cars overtaken him before the first corner
00:05:08once again. So it must be a nerve wracking occasion for this race, the Grand Prix today. And if we
00:05:14look
00:05:14at the Ferraris, they're super fast off the start. They have been all year so far, the testing we've
00:05:19done, the races we've had. And this was Hamilton yesterday in the sprint race, starting from P4.
00:05:24That's the slow moving Antonelli in front straight past him. Then immediately look into his left-hand
00:05:29side. He's got Lando Norris in the McLaren. He's got a nice gap here in front of him through turn
00:05:33one
00:05:34and gets past him and slots in behind the race leader, George Russell. Later on in the lap,
00:05:40however, by the time they get to turn six, seven and eight, he's on the attack and uses all of
00:05:46his experience and his instinctive racing knowledge to just drive around the outside of Russell and claim
00:05:52the lead of the race. So that is definitely something for us to be watching out for today.
00:06:00Well, I'm down at Lando Norris' car at the moment and Lando has returned to the garage. He's at the

00:06:05there with his trainer, John, and he is preparing to get into it, which is good news. He's pulled his
00:06:09race suit up. He is preparing to put his hands device and his helmet on. But when he walked back
00:06:13in, he went in and spoke to his engineers and the face he pulled was not one of positivity,
00:06:18I'm afraid. They're not sure at the moment whether or not he is going to be able to compete in

00:06:23race. He's getting ready as though he is, but we are still waiting here at McLaren, as you can see,

00:08:00have a better start. It's after through the first corner in his race craft, which was amazing. And
00:08:05looking from here, I never noticed because I raced here, I never noticed there's banking in that first
00:08:09corner. Yeah, there is. I mean, it's apparent when you stand here on the grid. A penny for his thoughts.

00:12:36We have new rules and regulations, new compounds for tyres as well.
00:12:40The narrower and slightly harder compounds, there's still the C4, C3, C2 and they're still going to be punished around
00:12:47this 3.38 mile circuit.
00:12:49And we've currently got two McLarens in the garage.
00:12:54We've got Alex Albon starting from the pit lane and Gabriel Bortoletto at Audi also being pushed off the grid.

00:14:43Ted, this is the worst possible start for McLaren ahead of this Grand Prix.
00:14:47So we're just waiting for confirmation for McLaren that it is a similar issue.
00:14:50The strange thing is that nothing's changed since the sprint race yesterday, in which both McLarens obviously could start up
00:14:56and then finish.
00:14:57And same to say for the Grand Prix qualifying, where the cars were running fine.
00:15:01Nothing's changed between then and this morning.
00:15:04But when they try to fire them up, they're just having these electronic problems.
00:15:08And whether it's a problem with the ECU or others, or other bits of it, multiple issues potentially, we're waiting
00:15:14to find out.
00:15:15But yeah, they carry on like this.
00:15:17We're hardly going to have any cars left on the grid at all, but yeah, I can hear some engines
00:15:21running up.
00:15:22But it doesn't look good, the picture down at McLaren.

00:15:25And at Audi with Gabriel Bortoletto, they're still investigating the reasons behind the necessity to push him off the grid.

00:16:24When it comes to the race here today, one stop is the favoured strategy.
00:16:30If anyone starts on the soft, well, Verstappen and Hadjar are, they're taking a bit of a gamble, given what
00:16:36happened in the sprint yesterday.
00:16:38The hard is very much the favoured race tyre.
00:16:40One stop on paper looks like it is the fastest strategy.
00:16:44But, you know, tyre graining is so high around this circuit, Crofty, and that could determine whether it becomes a
00:16:50two-stop.

00:16:58Yeah, so I think the two red balls starting on the soft, they've got two options then, really, don't they?
00:17:02They're either committed to that two-stop, which will have a very early stop lap anywhere, really, from around lap

00:17:08and then two sets of hard tyres from there.
00:17:11Or, do they think they can stretch a single hard tyre, use the soft off the start line to gain
00:17:18some positions,
00:17:19and then have an early pit stop onto the hard tyre or take an early safety car onto a hard
00:17:25tyre.
00:17:26And then they can make the decision after that, Crofty.
00:17:28They can decide, depending on how that hard tyre progresses.
00:17:31With teams only ringing two hard tyres to this event, nobody really knows.
00:17:35Nobody knows what the graining is going to be like in these conditions on the hard tyre.
00:17:39So anyone that stops early onto that is taking a gamble.
00:17:43And even if they'd have all run the hard tyre yesterday, the track temperature's about 13 degrees cooler than it
00:17:49was for the sprint race.
00:17:51Oscar Piastri won from pole here last year.
00:17:54He is now wondering if he can actually get into the race itself.
00:17:58After Melbourne last year, last week, where he didn't get into the race after that crash,
00:18:02it just couldn't get any worse at the start of the season for Oscar Piastri.
00:18:07It's the kind of scenes that I expected at the first race just one week ago in Melbourne, Crofty.
00:18:12Not the second Grand Prix.
00:18:13I would have thought teams would rapidly get a handle on the reliability issues.
00:18:18But, yeah, that's the nature of Formula One.
00:18:21Always expect the unexpected in that regard.
00:18:23In a new set of regulations in cars, as we saw the Red Bull on the grid.
00:18:27Even the rear actuator.
00:18:29Something that should have been tried and tested in our minds over many years with DRS.
00:18:34It's a similar functionality.
00:18:36They're figuring out these new problems, finding these new problems with these new cars.
00:18:40The actuator being the bit that helps the Active Aero get active.

00:22:53In 2026, these are the two teams that have seemed to have adjusted to the new regulations the best.

00:23:10Is he though going to deploy extra battery to try and boost his way out of that penultimate corner?
00:23:15As Oscar Piastri gets out of his car to Grand Prix, he hasn't completed a single lap in either of

00:23:34Lewis Hamilton said before the race at the Ferraris,
00:23:36we're going to have to work together to try and put a stop to the Mercedes eventually working their way
00:23:41through.
00:23:42They believe they've got the faster race pace, and they showed that yesterday.
00:23:46But I was expecting, or half expecting, Lewis to make a comeback down towards Turn 1.
00:23:50He didn't do that, but with that extra boost of energy from the battery pack from Antonelli,
00:23:56it's still not over until the end of this lap, Crofty.
00:23:59Let's see how it works out.
00:24:00But remember, with the overtake mode in function,
00:24:03that car behind, the second behind the car in front,
00:24:05gets that extra half a megajoule of energy that they can use.
00:24:09And Kimi Antonelli putting that to good use now.
00:24:12Franco Colopinto is running sixth behind his teammate, Pierre Gasly,
00:24:17and he's on the hard tyre.
00:24:19This has been a fabulous start for Franco Colopinto,
00:24:22the only driver last season to be racing this season
00:24:25that didn't score a point during the course of last year.

00:24:32An overtake enabled for Lewis Hamilton.
00:24:35He gets that extra half a megajoule of allowance.
00:24:37That should be helping him down the back straight,
00:24:40but Antonelli seems to be streaking away.
00:24:43And Russell will have that enabled as well, as will Leclerc,
00:24:47because they're all definitely within a second of one another.
00:24:50So Hamilton has that advantage this lap on Kimi,
00:24:54and we've got to see whether he's still within that second.
