00:02:21out and in the sport where the faces change regularly we have the youngest
00:02:25ever pole sitter a superstar in the making in the form of Kimi Antonelli
00:02:30Mercedes have locked out the front row can anybody stop them well he's only
00:02:36been on this planet for 19 years and 202 days and Kimi Antonelli has picked up
00:02:44his first pole position in Formula One swift work by the young Italian Jacques
00:02:50Villeneuve the 1997 world champion is alongside me so too three-time winner of
00:02:54the W Series Jamie Chadwick impressive performance yesterday Jamie it was an
00:02:59important performance he took the opportunity when George had his issue and
00:03:03it was a great performance so you know the Mercedes has been strong here but
00:03:06still to put it on pole position after a tough weekend so far for him a tough
00:03:10sprint race has been impressive and well deserved knew you needed to get off to a
00:03:14a fast start because George has looked really in control as you mentioned he
00:03:18had a few issues yesterday but both of them looking incredibly comfortable in
00:03:22that Mercedes that car is nice to drive you can see it's balanced the drivers can
00:03:28do whatever they want but it mostly for for Russell because he doesn't even seem
00:03:31to be pushing he still has a little bit within him where Kimi has to push a little
00:03:36bit harder that's why he's made some mistakes and yesterday he had an
00:03:38opportunity to grab and he did he did what do you think of you know for Kimi
00:03:43itself you know when he when you're up against someone of the caliber of George
00:03:47you know we know he's at the top of his game he's ready to win a world
00:03:51championship but Kimi he believes doesn't he that he can take that title
00:03:55even if some others might have some doubts I think there'll be a small part of
00:03:59him that believes it but I think there's a lot of him that's realistic and knows
00:04:02that he's up against George and he seems quietly kind of able just accept where
00:04:07George is at learn from him and ultimately what he needs to do is get through this season no mistakes
00:04:11and if he makes no mistakes and with the speedy has he will get results and that
00:04:16could bring him into a position to be fighting for the championship but at this
00:04:19stage of the season he should be thinking about or do you think actually he does
00:04:24believe I agree the part of him believes that things could go his way like it
00:04:28happened yesterday he knows is a little bit slower than than Russell right now that
00:04:32he has to push harder he needs to make a step to put himself on the same level on a
00:04:36constant which is not the case right now but that means he will still grab
00:04:40second second places normally in most races so the gaps never get too big if
00:04:45he makes that step during the season then yes he will be a force to reckon
00:04:47really okay some breaking news from overnight for you and as expected due to
00:04:53the ongoing conflict in the Gulf we will not be going to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia so
00:05:00we do have Japan on March the 29th but then the next race will be in May May the
00:05:06third for Miami there are obviously some doubts going forward Azerbaijan is just north for example
00:05:10of Iran but that's much later in the season so yes and if it carries on Qatar and Abu Dhabi
00:05:17you'd have to think would be in doubt but obviously that is monitored by Formula One and
00:05:22they will take the right decisions accordingly I mean let's go into they don't do things by halves
00:05:28here by the way in China this is the most gargantuan main grandstand in Formula One and somewhere up
00:05:35there is Craig Slater give us a wave Craig Ni hao Ni hao yes welcome to the iconic grandstands here
00:05:43the Shanghai International Circuit incredible structure 400 meters long 50 meters high it holds 30,000 fans it's
00:05:51actually designed in that the Shang uh based on the Shang character in in Chinese script which means
00:05:57rising or ascending but who will rise to the top of the podium today all of the top six drivers
00:06:03have
00:06:03enormous fan bases here we've got Lando Norris fans down there we've got Oscar Piastri fans over
00:06:10here give us a wave slightly lukewarm down there an immense Lewis Hamilton fan base Lewis calls them the
00:06:17secret service because they they follow him around they know where his plane lands they know all the
00:06:22public appearances he makes but look at this backing for George Russell astounding here just to give
00:06:29you some figures on the news the Chinese used last night 221 million Chinese f1 fans nowadays 50% male
00:06:39female splits see there's a picture of a young George Russell there and most of them under 35 years
00:06:47of age for Ray was a big total wolf fan the signature of it but you've got some special words
00:06:57for us
00:06:58what are they what are they that is of course lights out and away we go in Mandarin Crofty's big
00:07:07catchphrase not
00:07:08long till we hear that quick look at the drivers and constructors then after George Russell's sprint win
00:07:16yesterday he leads his teammate and Charles Leclerc by 11 points Lewis Hamilton tucked in behind
00:07:21there comes Lando Norris who's ahead of Max Verstappen who absolutely detests that Red Bull at the moment
00:07:27then Ollie Behrman and Arvid Lindblad Oscar Piastri Gabriel Bortoleto making up the rest of the top 10
00:07:36in the constructors Mercedes have a 15 point gap over Ferrari then 22 further back are McLaren and Red Bull
00:07:44only eight points on the board after one race and a sprint right let's hear from the pole sitter he
00:07:51swung by the sky pad last night to talk to it well Kimi thanks for joining us here at the
00:07:57sky pad how
00:07:58does it feel your first Grand Prix pole position yeah it feels feels good uh hopefully first one of of
00:08:04many but was a clean session uh no mistakes so yeah really really good feeling and uh looking forward
00:08:11to tomorrow well if you can take us through this lap as uh we ride on board with it yeah
00:08:17so obviously
00:08:18he tried to have a really good run uh into turn one was very tricky today especially in q q1
00:08:25and q2 and q3
00:08:26a lot of understeer um more than usual so it was really hard to get into that apex and here
00:08:34with the
00:08:34track going down you get a bit of three wheeling so it's important to rotate the car the best way
00:08:39as
00:08:39possible here i was making a lot of uh switches on steering wheel because it was really easy at the
00:08:46micro lock on the front right and i get a lot of understeer so i can see the amount of
00:08:53steering angle
00:08:54this is like monaco hairpin levels of understeer or steering angle i i micro lock the front right
00:09:00which was enough to really lose the front so uh was very very tricky corner with the tailwind
00:09:06into into the entry and then you were picking up the headwind so could smash it on on power because
00:09:12you there was a lot of load actually when i play it on in slow motion you get to just
00:09:18see that tiny
00:09:19micro lock you say just rotating around for the fans back home just keep an eye out for it something
00:09:24obviously kimmy felt in the car but i play it on here yeah you can see this like slightly shiny
00:09:30bit
00:09:30rotating around so that's what you felt obviously and then coming down into turn seven deployment
00:09:37reduces so you can stay flat um also this difficult corner with a lot of understeer i was trying to
00:09:44hook the curb on the inside to rotate well and then to prepare this double left difficult uh mid-exit
00:09:52with the tailwind and then this was another difficult corner on entry with again little micro lock on on
00:09:59entry and uh yeah 12 is all about you know carrying the momentum into the exit because then you have
00:10:05a
00:10:05lot of you have a very very long straight very endless straight and uh here you're just getting ready to
00:10:13to break today with the hand wind you could break very very late so tailwind into 11 headwind therefore
00:10:20more exactly into this one so first gear trying to rotate difficult to pick up power especially
00:10:26transition first to second and in this last corner trying to carry a lot of speed use all the track
00:10:31on
00:10:31exit and uh yeah that was the lap a really nicely driven lap and uh i i said in commentary
00:10:38that and you
00:10:39would have wanted your teammate out there obviously to measure yourself against i know he george only
00:10:44had the one run but it's still it must make it even sweeter the fact that he was actually out
00:10:48there and
00:10:49it wasn't like he never made it out on track at all yeah for sure i mean obviously he he
00:10:54put he had
00:10:55only one run in q3 but uh you know it's it's still you know i still was able to do
00:11:01the lap uh with no issue
00:11:02he he obviously did a did a very good lap as well so would have been interesting to see
00:11:07to see him with a second set but uh i think would have been very very close so yeah let's
00:11:12see it
00:11:12tomorrow in the race where tomorrow we have a hopefully a long whole entire race battle between
00:11:17you two what do you reckon yeah i think it's going to be really important to stay on top of
00:11:21the draining
00:11:22front left which is uh you know was starting to appear into the sprint race so does that level of
00:11:28understeer worry you going into the race well tomorrow wind is gonna rotate quite a lot so
00:11:32should be a lot better uh for the understeer but i really want to check with the engineer with the
00:11:38car because uh this level understeer was very unusual uh and it felt like something was was broken
00:11:44in the car and uh we had to add a lot of flap and still uh masses of understeer so
00:11:49we saw george have
00:11:51to change the yeah the wing the the whole nose section because of a problem with the straight mode at
00:11:56front end so yeah i mean i wouldn't be surprised if uh if i had the same because uh the
00:12:01level of
00:12:02understeer was uh monstrous so yeah hopefully tomorrow a bit better balance and uh yeah we'll
00:12:07try to have a clean start and then see from there well i wish you all the best of luck
00:12:10tomorrow
00:12:11give me in the race thanks again for joining us thank you great job again cheers now george i don't
00:12:16know if you remember but this time last year when we did this walk you went viral because someone
00:12:21shouted at you you were gorgeous george do you remember that i do i do i remember it they're so
00:12:26kind that the chinese fans over here it's so much uh so much love and they uh yeah it's quite
00:12:32nice now
00:12:33let's talk about the car because yesterday there were two independent problems you have the front wing
00:12:37issue and then the stoppage is reliability going to be a concern for you guys today i think we understand
00:12:43both of them both the issues to be honest um and the q3 problem it's is one of those that
00:12:49once you have the
00:12:50problem once you know how to avoid it now you're kind of always waiting for that next one and
00:12:57unfortunately with a new engine and a new car you need to have the problem before you know how to
00:13:02mitigate it so um i've got to be honest it's not really a concern for me but being realistic we
00:13:09know
00:13:09at some point we are going to get caught out we just hope it doesn't happen during uh during the
00:13:14race
00:13:15the front wing issue is that all solved or could it occur again because all the front graining you
00:13:20get around here is that something you can drive around if it does happen i think i don't know
00:13:25exactly what happened to be honest i ran a little bit wide and i think i just damaged it so
00:13:28to be
00:13:29honest i'm probably gonna take it slightly easier with some of my curb strikes especially out of that
00:13:34last corner and uh that shouldn't be an issue either but like you say front graining is an issue and
00:13:38you do really want to protect it so this is the track you don't want to be uh damaging your
00:13:43front
00:13:43wing right how do you win this today you've got your teammate on pole how do you win this and
00:13:49how
00:13:49do you keep those ferraris at bay at the start have you two discussed this we have uh we have
00:13:55definitely and i'm not too sure that's going to be quite easy to to keep both of them behind us
00:14:00but
00:14:00it's a really long race there's so many opportunities now with these new cars
00:14:04um you can overtake almost anywhere on track which makes it quite exciting i spoke with
00:14:09charles and lewis yesterday we actually both or the three of us really enjoyed the sprint race
00:14:13which made it good and as i said it doesn't need to be one at turn one as maybe sometimes
00:14:18in the past
00:14:19it had to be so um i'm just going to be patient and i think we've got the car pace
00:14:23to to fight all
00:14:25right well this has been a lovely scenic walk it has been it's a nice paddock here isn't it it's
00:14:29really
00:14:29lovely and i'm going to deliver you to your engineers for a final word now uh before you go out
00:14:33and see the
00:14:33fans but go well today george thanks very much thank you i've been doing a flag count and i believe
00:14:40that george russell has the most flags and perhaps the most flags in this uh in this main grandstand
00:14:49jamie yeah what what's the reasons for george's popularity in china they like him a lot here don't
00:14:54they um i think yeah he's always had a lot of popularity here it's always been a place he always
00:14:58does like a special helmet he seems to like it a lot so um yeah i think he needs to
00:15:02enjoy having
00:15:03this amount of fans at a racetrack um he was talking about it there you know we've seen huge speed
00:15:09differentials off the line all dependent on getting a fast start kimmy didn't get one in the sprint
00:15:14why was that and why is it so tricky to get off the line for some i know he said
00:15:19that he made some
00:15:20errors in his in his prep so uh uh he will be stressed he went to bed with that kind
00:15:25of stress in
00:15:26his mind so we'll see how that pans out today that'll be exciting to watch now how will he fix
00:15:30what he did
00:15:31wrong yesterday how will he react to that kind of pressure but the main thing is ferrari designed
00:15:36a car and engine turbo to help them in that situation and it's paying off is it inevitable
00:15:41that they're going to get a faster start than mercedes today not inevitable because if you're
00:15:46mercedes you should constantly be working on it and george did lead into turn one yesterday so i think
00:15:50his start itself was slower but he was still able to lead it was the rest of the lap where
00:15:55it was lewis that was able to take advantage and really did a much better job of preparing that first
00:16:00lap so it will be interesting if they do get away well together it sounds like they've spoken about
00:16:05it they've got a plan in place but executing a plan well without any of the deployment uh situation is
00:16:10hard enough but now it's 10 times harder is it the strongest weapon do you think in the ferrari arsenal
00:16:16yes it is uh definitely they've designed the car which means they're losing something somewhere else
00:16:21uh ultimately but it also gives them an advantage early in the race when and until the systems get into
00:16:27place uh and it seems that both leclerc and and and hamilton have an amazing race craft they figured
00:16:34it out on the spot both in australia and we saw yesterday with lewis the race craft made the
00:16:38difference and it took uh russell a little bit of time to figure out where he should deploy or not
00:16:43so
00:16:43that made a difference and antonelli does not have that practice he has never raced at the front since
00:16:47the beginning of the season we're discussing it earlier he came back through the field which is very
00:16:51different can the ferraris work together today will they work together today to overhaul what we
00:16:56think is a quicker mercedes on race pace they can try i think actually you would think if the ferraris
00:17:02were both out front it would be better for ferrari but actually with the way that it is with the
00:17:07process
00:17:07of trying to plan and overtake having one in front and one behind is almost as bad because you're gonna
00:17:12have to think about defending from the car behind and trying to attack so actually if they can split the
00:17:17mercedes and get in between them that might be their their best bet but the reality of the one
00:17:21stop and when that pit stops timed and the tire degradation that they seem to have i can imagine
00:17:26it being challenging as the race goes on that was the problem though wasn't it for lewis in the sprint
00:17:29in having that yo-yo racing great racing to to start with yes okay depends what you think about
00:17:36it's fun um but he did wear his front left did did lewis he worked it hard and and and
00:17:43that he paid the
00:17:44price afterwards uh it's still allowed for for a good result at the end of the day another big
00:17:49points difference but you were asking about ferrari working together i think leclerc showed yesterday
00:17:53that he won't be bothered with working with his teammate okay right this is the plan before lights
00:17:58out here in china at five to six we'll travel to india with arvid lindblad and ted what we're saying
00:18:06like it oh yeah this is really good what's gonna happen if i eat this chili might be a bit
00:18:12spicy
00:18:13i go for it yeah yeah at 10 past i caught up with ferrari superstar charlac clare do you know
00:18:20what
00:18:20chinese year you were born in no you're a fire ox right so it has meaning the pit lane goes
00:18:28live at 20 past
00:18:31the 6 30 will be on the grid for the final half hour before lights out as the chinese grand
00:18:38prix gets
00:18:38underway at seven
00:18:52welcome back a terrific start to arvid lindblad's f1 career 70th driver to score points on debut ted
00:19:00spent some time in india with him on the way to australia so here we are avid india gate a
00:19:12bit of
00:19:12calm in the middle of a chaotic city like delhi tell us what india means to you the first time
00:19:18i came
00:19:19was at the end of 2024 um just sort of experiencing india is is still a a new thing for
00:19:25me i spent a lot
00:19:27time with my grandparents and they're very traditional indians uh they're from the punjab
00:19:30region i remember for me when i came here for the first time you know it was really quite quite
00:19:36cool
00:19:36for me i remember when i was four my dad had the f1 on he was sitting on the sofa
00:19:40at home and i came
00:19:41and i sat down next to him and i could see all these really fast cars and i thought you
00:19:45know wow that
00:19:46looks really cool it looks really exciting and then we went karting for the first time when i was five
00:19:50i was having fun but i was also very focused and i had this goal of getting to formula one
00:19:55so it was
00:19:55always about improving and not just going through the motions
00:20:02there was a nice picture of you at the british grand prix yes yeah it would have been 2014 and
00:20:07i
00:20:07was very fortunate because we got invited into the hospitality above the garage and i met jensen
00:20:12button i was on the sim all day and the fastest guy got to meet jensen so he gave me
00:20:16some advice
00:20:16and it was always work hard and drive smooth and that's something that sort of stuck with me and
00:20:20apart from jensen who were your racing influences i'd say growing up lewis was the one i sort of looked
00:20:25up to the most i felt a connection to him in the sense that he was the only one of
00:20:29color his rookie
00:20:30year was the year i was born obviously he was doing very well at the time when i was getting
00:20:34into the
00:20:34sport yeah obviously a karting champion uh from formula four to formula three you were the youngest
00:20:39winner in formula two ever um what was the kind of breakthrough do you think i mean one of the
00:20:44big
00:20:44things was obviously getting signed by the red bull program at 13 so i've really come through the
00:20:48ranks of single-seaters with red bull so that was when you kind of thought okay this could lead into
00:20:53formula one and where of course the fateful discussion with lando norris i kind of just
00:20:58run up to lando and the first thing that came out was i want you to remember me i'll see
00:21:02you in five
00:21:02years yeah yeah i believed i could be in formula one i had that same belief when i was 14
00:21:07that day
00:21:07and um obviously now i'm very proud that it's come true and it's yeah so it's a funny story now
00:21:13should we go and get some lunch sure all right let's go grab a curry
00:21:16i really want to find some really spicy chilis or something i love hot food find me something really
00:21:22hot and i'll have hiccups for about half an hour all right i think i found somewhere i can spend
00:21:29my
00:21:29one pound 63. yeah one mother culture and uh red onion and whatever chilis these are please there you go
00:21:39china japan will be new shizuka yeah so that's one i'm really looking forward to yeah obviously that's
00:21:45a very iconic circuit i think probably one of probably the favorite for almost all the drivers
00:21:49what we're saying do you like it oh yeah this is really good what's gonna happen if i eat this
00:21:55chili might be a bit spicy should i go for it yeah yeah whole thing yeah iron stomach arvid yeah
00:22:02iron
00:22:02stomach built built for indian food don't you worry about me son i'll be fine have another one
00:22:08straight in well that is quite hot that's a bit more spicy that one
00:22:14oh no so have you figured out what success is going to mean to you the challenges and the sort
00:22:21of skills required this year in f1 will be different to previous years um just because of obviously the
00:22:26cars are different but mostly i think the pu i think that's a big thing yeah for me obviously like
00:22:31when you come from f2 to f1 it's already quite a big step you're right that's just a tree pause
00:22:37oh no it's fine got a tissue here somewhere joseph carry on all right okay um every time i get
00:22:43in the
00:22:43car i'm gonna do as best as i possibly can it's moments like that where you do something a bit
00:22:47different a bit special which is what creates opportunities you know i think that's obviously
00:22:53um i mean in the the rebel family that will be what the main team will be looking at is
00:22:58those moments of
00:22:59doing something a bit different a bit special that will create those moments but that's what i
00:23:04mean you out drive the car and that is a successful season summed up with uh with some indian food
00:23:12sorry about the hiccups no no that's all right this is actually surprisingly good
00:23:25when did you know you've got the f1 drive because it wasn't a given you could have done another
00:23:31season in f2 i found out in in the week of qatar um about the news that would be on
00:23:36the grid this
00:23:36year in f1 um i was with my dad at the time and obviously that was very special because it's
00:23:40something
00:23:41that me and him did together so to share that moment with him was obviously something very
00:23:45special and we called my mum immediately afterwards as well because it's it's something we've all done
00:23:49together and had to you know sacrifice for um so it's yeah it was a very very special moment for
00:23:55sure
00:23:55okay well listen arvid it's been lovely to spend the day with you you're about as chilled out as outlet
00:24:00fellow over there look at him just nibbling on taking in he's quite chilled out he is quite
00:24:05living the life i feel like i'm part of a david attenborough documentary right now he approaches
00:24:11for a little snack is that is that good oh that's a good impression yeah yeah you nailed that i
00:24:16thought
00:24:17i was with david for a second though put off by the older man's stupid impression of david attenborough
00:24:23the monkey disappears up a tree
00:24:30uh yes ted wonderful ted in india uh i wonder what's next uh another one of these kids that comes
00:24:37in there was in this playstation generation i wouldn't call it that now but they all so prepped by the
00:24:43time they get into formula one well they find the simulators easy as well and once you've been in the
00:24:48simulator a lot it's easy to replicate what you've done in the sim but then that doesn't mean it will
00:24:53be
00:24:53easy to make that extra step on the track to feel where the limit is you're you're kind of stuck
00:24:57in
00:24:57your own bubble so that's a risk uh that they're playing with uh for some of them it works for
00:25:02some
00:25:03others it doesn't but we've always had that even before the sims that first race exuberance the
00:25:08adrenaline that new driver that comes in and does a mega result and then it doesn't carry on so we
00:25:14have
00:25:14to wait and see he started well hopefully we'll carry on like this you were a gamer weren't you
00:25:19yes i know that but you said the word game gamer gamer it was used to play to have fun
00:25:25and learn
00:25:26track in case you hadn't noticed we're in the back of the uh the racing bulls uh garage wonderful
00:25:31well teed up thank you alex this is pierre hamlin who is arvid's uh race engineer okay great to talk
00:25:37to you how um how is it working with you what what an amazing start last weekend in australia yeah
00:25:43for
00:25:4318 years old i think it's uh it's pretty amazing australia it's a track he already knew from last
00:25:48year with f2 so it was all quite good i think he was quite calm on the weekend went really
00:25:53well
00:25:55here it's much more difficult sprint weekend china is a very difficult layout we lost fp1
00:26:01effectively with arvid we had an issue with the car so it's been a bit more difficult all that
00:26:06considered everything that's gone on this weekend how's he been finding it in formula one obviously the
00:26:11regulations are very different this year but he seems to have adapted quite well how are you
00:26:15finding working with him so we've been preparing for quite a while during the winter so i think he's
00:26:19very very ready for it he's been studying a lot in terms of the new pu how to use it
00:26:24every night he's one of the last in the office to look at what his energy is doing which gear
00:26:29he should
00:26:29be using for his throttle is affecting his energy management so he's been really on top of it all the
00:26:34way through so yeah after a first weekend and we often see drivers in their first weekend
00:26:39really explode and be amazing and then calm down a bit and here it's been a lot more pressure with
00:26:44with the issues not driving is he a cool cat or is pressure affecting him so you can tell he's
00:26:48trying to go into a bit more details this weekend compared to last weekend because last weekend we
00:26:53had the pace advantage we were quite fast effectively throughout the weekend so it was a bit more calm
00:26:58it's true that now he's trying to find a bit more all the small things why my hot lap was
00:27:03different
00:27:04why is this lap adds a bit more overstay in that corner he's been looking into uh he's been a
00:27:09bit
00:27:09more inquisitive thanks yeah i'm just going to run over here i'll let you get on with your day job
00:27:13rather than talking to us i was going to talk to him but i can't there's there's him just once
00:27:17we're
00:27:17here though um p have a quick look at this screen because you talk about actually and and come and
00:27:22have
00:27:22to talk to us about this jack and and jamie that's back in faenza that just shows you it's not
00:27:27just
00:27:27the team um on on site there's always an array of engineers back uh what are they doing they're
00:27:35humans for starters which is still good um they're looking at all the data studying the the strategy
00:27:41and sending a lot of feedback they don't need to be here this is something i didn't know when i
00:27:46was
00:27:46racing and it's such an amazing tool when it's used properly yeah exactly it's a race control there
00:27:51as well so for strategy for everything that they can't have enough people here they have all back
00:27:56at base and they report there's constant communication between everyone and that's
00:28:01the bit that people don't see how many people are in these race teams yes there's a lot of
00:28:04people at the track but back at base there's a lot of people as well i want to just quickly
00:28:08peek in there i hope we're not uh crossing a line but just look at the complexity of the steering
00:28:14wheel now i mean you talk about going back to what we're talking about with with regards to
00:28:18gaming i mean you need a degree to operate these things and it's not just the front it's on the
00:28:22back as well there's so many toggles so many switches complex i don't like seeing it because
00:28:29i just want to jump in let's let's move away yeah much more complex we had like the radio and
00:28:34the
00:28:34drink that kind of was it in the beginning that was it oh yeah that was that was a lot
00:28:39but that's
00:28:40thing now they have so many tools to help them with their balance whilst they're out there on track
00:28:44they've got the differential they've got so many things that they can use to help themselves but
00:28:47now as well with the new regulations the whole wheel and things that they need have changed so
00:28:52getting used to that into this season especially for us a rookie that's going to be taking some time
00:28:56a bit of work for the racing balls to do starting in 14 and 15 starting in eight yes eight
00:29:02max verstappen
00:29:04max it looks like it's been quite a tough weekend for rebel so far how tricky has it been for
00:29:09you
00:29:09behind the wheel here um i've had better weekends yeah but uh yeah we'll try to do the best we
00:29:15can
00:29:15i mean uh realistically i think maybe we can fight for one one more spot that's what we'll try to
00:29:22aim
00:29:22for you give some great moves in the sprint though but that was partly due to not getting away so
00:29:26cleanly so how important is the start going to be for you today yeah let's not uh well let's try
00:29:31and
00:29:31not lose too many places i think the two starts that i've done so far this season have always been
00:29:35in
00:29:35p20 so uh yeah let's uh let's at least target a better start we look forward to seeing it
00:29:42we're smiling a bit more than he was last night he's clearly not happy with with the way things
00:29:46are going the issue seems to be not just on the the pu side but the chassis side too it's
00:29:52uh all
00:29:52intricately linked i think it's hard to smile less than he was yesterday it's all linked but of course
00:29:58that's formula one you need everything to fall into place and to be working and with these new set of
00:30:02regulations you have to be on top of it and at the moment rebel aren't um and max can only
00:30:08do what
00:30:08he can do so he's going to be frustrated that said it can only get better in some way and
00:30:13we know where
00:30:13they were this time last year it wasn't in a position to be fighting for a world championship
00:30:17at the end of the year they turned it around it's going to be more difficult this year but that's
00:30:21not
00:30:21to say they can't do something to improve where they are it's really bizarre territory we find
00:30:26ourselves the equipment shuffle past that uh it's ferrari uh mechanics yeah it's just weird ground
00:30:32isn't it to see max like the middle of the pack and struggling for grip and it's understeer that he's
00:30:38been complaining about uh overall and he hates understeer yeah uh it's not something he can drive
00:30:43around uh he likes having a light rear end and this is also an understeering track so when you put
00:30:49the
00:30:49two together it becomes it becomes very complicated but in the past even when the car wasn't great
00:30:53it had a direction it had like a single issue that he could work with feel the car give some
00:30:59info to
00:31:00the team drive around it now the car has too many issues and he doesn't know where to point his
00:31:04finger
00:31:04just having to wander up to he's a catch our side of the garage how impressed have you been jamie
00:31:11with him the young frenchman he was within a tenth of max yesterday he just seems like he's to the
00:31:17manner born very impressed we were impressed with him last year i think we expected him to come in he
00:31:21seemed like he was in a position to come in and be able to be comfortable he has been fortunate
00:31:26it's
00:31:26a much softer landing that with the new regulations coming into this team he's not gone up against the
00:31:32almighty max of uh what we've seen in the past generation of cars so slightly softer landing for
00:31:37him it's a bit of a reset but that said still to perform and to be close to max is
00:31:41impressive
00:31:42okay let's head down to mclaren ted what can you tell us well there's a late glitch on lando
00:31:47norris's car uh they fired the car up and there seemed to be some sort of electronics problem
00:31:51there was the guy from uh applied sciences the people who make the electronic control unit
00:31:56consulting with the mechanics of what was going on i believe mclaren tell us that they've identified the
00:32:01problem but now you see one two three four five six half a dozen mechanics trying to get to various
00:32:06electronic bits of the car and fix it we've got what uh 12 minutes 13 minutes until pit lane open
00:32:12should be okay uh but they've had these some issues with the uh with the ecu and the electronics
00:32:17on these cars through testing we haven't seen any effect the cars in sprint races or grand prix so far
00:32:22this is a little glitch that lando norris there on the right hand side could do without
00:32:29thanks ted keep an eye on that for us we'll have more on that and when we come back
00:32:33we'll hear from that man charlotte claire
00:32:37in the deepest of your hearts do you think there is a there's potentially a championship this year
00:32:42it's very early to say i think speaking about again innovations and what i've seen in the car
00:32:47i feel closer than i've been in the past with ferrari to reach that target
00:33:00welcome back all calm in the ferrari garage at the moment at the back you can see
00:33:04charlotte claire just popping his helmet on he finished third in melbourne second in the sprint
00:33:10here in china he'd dearly like to go one better in the race itself it starts from fourth and i
00:33:15spoke
00:33:15to the newlywed monogasque driver earlier this week
00:33:23so when they told me i was going to do this interview i was trying to rack my brains and
00:33:27think
00:33:27what i was doing when i was 28. i'm pretty sure i was single living in a one-bedroom flat
00:33:32surrounded
00:33:32by empty pizza boxes but you're driving for ferrari you've just been on the podium and just got
00:33:37married the delightful alexandra do you sometimes have to pinch yourself i do i i mean not for the
00:33:44podium more for alexandra i mean the podium is nice but i'll rather have a victory or a championship
00:33:49surely it's part of those moments that i'll forever remember not bad wedding car either that was
00:33:55incredible right yeah i asked to ferrari if they called and beat to us for the for the day which
00:33:59was
00:33:59amazing and everybody likes to see a dachshund in a tuxedo i mean he looked he stole the show for
00:34:06that day actually yeah good stuff amazing off season as you're saying and you and if you arrived
00:34:10here when i looked at it on saturday or we all looked at it it looked like it was a
00:34:15a long way
00:34:15off mercedes that wasn't necessarily the case on on sunday so how do you assess that that first weekend
00:34:21any charges for the season really that first start was to say the least very fast the fifth light came
00:34:27one for like a tenth and then being in the lead i was like okay now mercedes is going to
00:34:32fly past us
00:34:33very soon but actually i realized that the pace in the car for the race is quite a bit better
00:34:39compared
00:34:39to qualifying i was very surprised on sunday to be able to find the mercedes like we did in the
00:34:45first
00:34:45thing i i did not expect it dancing around the outside charlacler get hit there that's very nice
00:34:51indeed and it is high speed chess out there a lot of talk about the new rules and regulations um
00:34:57i
00:34:57think you said it's like what a mushroom from mario kart when you get i'll get on that that boost
00:35:01button
00:35:01it is like a mushroom it's mario kart what's it feel like in the cockpit overall are you more more
00:35:08positive more negative about them things have changed significantly and i think from the next four
00:35:14years we will have to go about racing in a different way do i like it in qualifying i don't
00:35:21you do lift
00:35:22and coast in qualifying which is a just a strange feeling i enjoyed the battle with george more than
00:35:28i would have thought now it's probably a bit more strategic but you've still got those moments where
00:35:33you've got to be brave and go and break later and uh but but it's it's different for sure talk
00:35:39to me
00:35:39about ferrari though you've come into this this season and it seemed like there's some great
00:35:44innovative bits that were on the car in pre-season the turbo the wing at the back too but what's
00:35:48the
00:35:48mood in the camp like the fact that you feels like you are at the forefront of innovation a new
00:35:53set of
00:35:54rules and regulations think back to how you and lewis were at the end of last year it was like
00:35:57heads
00:35:58down come on come on has it flipped 180 like the wing uh it probably flipped 180 like the wing
00:36:05yeah i mean
00:36:05last year wasn't as bad as what the perception was outside the team we were very very motivated we had
00:36:10moved very early on from the season to this year's car and to see this amount of innovation i think
00:36:16on
00:36:16our car is something that motivates and pushes the team to think outside the box and to try and find
00:36:22solutions with these new rules in order to to gain an advantage this is your eighth season with ferrari
00:36:27yours is obviously a signature that everyone up and down the grid would like you've had four out of
00:36:32those seven seasons without wishing to be too negative about it that have been winless how
00:36:36important is this year for your future as a ferrari driver it's important it's always been a dream come
00:36:42true to be driving for for ferrari i'm very much focused on this year and uh hoping to uh finally
00:36:49get back on top of the of the podium as soon as possible do you think you can in the
00:36:53deepest of your
00:36:54hearts do you think that there is a there's potentially a championship this year for you it's very
00:36:59early to say i think speaking about again innovations and what i've seen in the car i feel
00:37:04closer than i've been in the past with ferrari to reach that target do you know what uh chinese year
00:37:09it is yes i know the fire horse fire horse do you know what chinese year you were born in
00:37:15no you're a
00:37:16fire ox right so it has meaning right i didn't think you were cloven hoof you're the least cloven hoofed
00:37:23man i would have thought but uh the professor of chinese studies just to give you a little bit of
00:37:27a
00:37:27boost ahead of this new season yeah from the university of new south wales dr pan wang has
00:37:32said because you're a fire ox right yeah come in the year of the fire horse yeah it can bring
00:37:39extreme
00:37:39success such as rapid career progression but can be extremely challenging if one burns out or
00:37:46comes to anxiety which may lead to failure if we harness the fire horse well there's nothing to fear
00:37:56i love the intensity in which you said that sentence i i felt it deep
00:38:04but uh i'm not too too anxious so good that's a good thing i i like what you said harness
00:38:11the horse
00:38:12and the ox will prevail i'll harness the hope the horse the the hoax you're the ox harness the horse
00:38:21and everything will be well amazing
00:38:26do you know what chinese uh sign you are yeah i didn't but you have just told me yes
00:38:31i'm happy about it tiger she's a tiger i'm a wood rabbit whatever that is do you know what you
00:38:36are
00:38:38yeah it's a cuddly little pig you are you are a metal pig hold on let me read it out
00:38:43i'm not sure a metal pig is cuddly on those dates are considered metal pigs i don't know why often
00:38:48characterized as intelligent diligent and compassionate with a strong drive to achieve goals that is so me
00:38:55that thank you that is you all around um but yeah i mean look looks like it could be good
00:39:01for charles
00:39:01this year if the opens are right then you know in his hands that ferrari does look good although
00:39:06yesterday out driven by by lewis exactly but he was out driven a bit like lewis here last year
00:39:13for whatever reason charles admits that this is a bit of a bogey track for him which is unusual for
00:39:17a
00:39:17driver to outwardly say that that's a thing so i think he knows that if he can be close to
00:39:23lewis here
00:39:23that's a good thing i think yesterday in the sprint they sort of battle pretty hard it'd be
00:39:28interesting to see how hard they go again today because he doesn't want to let lewis get one up
00:39:31on him and i think he wants this track suit sorry what does he suit him well he doesn't he's
00:39:36a little
00:39:36bit like max he doesn't like understeer and this is a very understeering track but every driver has
00:39:41tracks that don't work and others that are amazing and it's not explainable it just happens naturally
00:39:46maybe it's a feature in the track that you don't even feel but the track drives naturally and you end
00:39:51up
00:39:51being quick but lewis is blisteringly quick round here the most successful driver of all time in
00:39:56china six wins and a sprint victory of course last year so he loves it he does and i think
00:40:01he loves
00:40:02well he loves the track he loves these cars at the moment he seems to have this new lease of
00:40:06life
00:40:06the spring in his step which i think that makes a big difference as well when you're happy and you're
00:40:10confident and he feels he's played a role in the development of this car so naturally sitting in a
00:40:14car that he feels that he's been a big part of whereas last year i felt like he felt like
00:40:18a bit of a
00:40:19stranger in that ferrari whereas now he feels comfortable in this team he seems to like the
00:40:23new regulations and the way that it allows him to race he seems to get the most out of it
00:40:27so um
00:40:28yeah be interested to see how it gets on today shall we hear from him here he is on the
00:40:31track right
00:40:32early six grand prix victories you won the sprint here last year but how tough will it be to beat
00:40:38those mercedes and repeat that today nice it's so hard to beat the mercedes i think ultimately just on
00:40:44pure pace we won't be able to to beat them but but um maybe tactically the good thing is there's
00:40:51the two mercedes and it's charl and i so hopefully we can tag team and and um and try to
00:40:57apply pressure
00:40:58to them both and you know maybe through strategy we're able to somehow pull something out of the bag
00:41:03so um i feel i feel good about today good luck sailors less downforce obviously than at the end
00:41:11of the rule cycle last year is why do you think these cars are suited to style a little bit
00:41:17better
00:41:18specifics on it for whatever reason the ground effects cars didn't seem to suit him as much i think
00:41:23also in terms of when he was dominant and when he was happy the cars were a bit smaller but
00:41:28they still
00:41:29had a lot of downpours so i think in comparison to now we've brought back the smaller lighter cars
00:41:34they move around a little bit more you drive a little bit more in the seat of your pants you
00:41:37drive
00:41:37on instinct it's a little bit less knowing exactly what that car is capable of and being reliant on
00:41:42the tools it's driving very much on feel everywhere and i think that's what suits lewis he's very
00:41:48much a driver that can get the most out of the car when he just drives in the seat of
00:41:51his pants more or less
00:41:52he's also a very emotional driver so when things go well he's unbeatable but then it can get gloomy
00:41:58and we've seen that even in his mercedes days now like you said the cars are lighter and the ferrari
00:42:03looks very racy looks like a car that can be tussled around a little bit much more than than the
00:42:09mercedes i can hear engines the lanes open tet all yours you certainly can simon yes the engines are
00:42:15running wheels are turning the drivers are ready to go except for a couple alex album starting for pitlane
00:42:21and lando norris he's in the car the car is not fired up for the for that matter neither is
00:42:26his
00:42:26teammate oscar piastri but i'll keep an eye on it eager to go at the end of the pit lane
00:42:30the two mercedes
00:42:31and this has to be one of the biggest days in kimmy antonelli's racing life the youngest ever grand prix
00:42:37pole sitter he can't be the youngest ever grand prix winner today that's of course max verstappen did that
00:42:43years ago at the age of 18 if that record might never be beaten but kimmy and george need the
00:42:48start
00:42:49of their lives kimmy's hasn't been good the last two times for the sprint and the australian grand
00:42:54prix just seeing oscar piastri coming towards me no lando norris's yet but then there's going to be
00:43:00the fight with the ferraris so the mercedes really need to park the bus at the start then it's going
00:43:05to be down to strategy here are your strategy options a one stop is quicker on the computer than a
00:43:10two
00:43:10but only by five seconds so it is very close the pit stop windows start around lap 15 for the
00:43:18one
00:43:18stop as early as lap 8 to 16 for the two ferrari won't make the same mistake they did in
00:43:24australia
00:43:25on strategy they hope so they are expecting hamilton and leclerc to mix it up right let's go up to
00:43:31the
00:43:31commentary box where david craft is waiting for us to call this and david lando's still in the garage
00:43:36uh it looks like no work is being done on the car they're just waiting but it was an electronics
00:43:42problem before and they can be fiendishly difficult to fix well mclaren say they've identified the
00:43:47problem ted and they think they've found a fix but you're right just over my shoulder on my bright
00:43:52shoulder lando norris in the car and the car still in the garage so we'll keep an eye on that
00:43:57and we'll keep an eye on this man kimmy antonelli today as you mentioned ted the youngest ever pole
00:44:02sitter for a grand prix how apt though uh that the man that was born on the same day that
00:44:08sebastian
00:44:08fettel made his f1 debut at a grand prix weekend turkey in 2006 is the man that replaces sebastian
00:44:15fettel as that youngest grand prix pole sitter but he is going to need as you mentioned ted a better
00:44:21start he was on polar course for the miami sprint last year lost four places at the start of that
00:44:27particular race he was on at the start in melbourne this season dropped uh five places at the start
00:44:34there and in the sprint race yesterday dropped six places so he is going to need a much better start
00:44:39if he's going to replicate sebastian fettel who won his race when he became the youngest pole sitter at
00:44:44monza in the torrential reign in 2008 but here maybe is an omen for kimmy antonelli today the last
00:44:50italian on pole giancarlo fisichella in spa back in 2007 he didn't win that day but a driver called
00:44:59kimmy did so you heard it here first if antonelli goes on to take victory watch out for the ferraris
00:45:05today though so far this season the ferrari driver that has started fourth on the grid has led them
00:45:11going into turn one will we see a repeat today pierre gasly another great qualifying performance for him
00:45:18and for alpine he starts p7 today the highest start for an alpine since gasly was fourth on the grid
00:45:26in jeddah 22 races ago we've got 21 drivers not 22 that we know are going to be on the
00:45:33grid because
00:45:33alex albon will start in the pit lane new control electronics batteries for isaac had you at rebel
00:45:39he's on his third battery pack of the season and still lando norris sat in his car in the garage
00:45:45as his teammate oscar piastri comes through the pits again there is work to be done to get lando
00:45:50norris out of the garage and before the pit exit closes
00:45:56yeah absolutely there is because the floor came off that car they checked the parts as crofty was
00:46:01saying and ted was mentioning they think it's all right but it is still there uh so clearly they're
00:46:07just going through some some final checks on it if it makes its way out to the the grid i
00:46:11just wonder in
00:46:12the back of the mind we saw yesterday didn't we jack and jamie with with george was an issue there
00:46:16they had to kind of cycle it three times on and off again control alt delete to get it going
00:46:22and then
00:46:23you know he didn't put in his quickest lap did he so i just wonder back in your mind ahead
00:46:27what what are we
00:46:28now 40 40 minutes or so away from the from lights out how does it affect you as a driver
00:46:33he knows he has the
00:46:34pace he'll be upset that he didn't you know get a full house because he's been at the front every
00:46:40every all the time since we have the season and he probably should have been on pole he had the
00:46:44pace but he missed the the running he knows in the race he's in a stronger position than his teammate
00:46:47also because he's fought lewis and charles before sorry i was talking talking about lando actually
00:46:52with regards to to lando yeah i mean just wondering you know what's going through his mind now when that
00:47:00kind of thing happens it's easier in this situation than say what george had because george missed his q3
00:47:05run so he didn't get that chance to get a feel for the for the q3 lap one um and
00:47:09then he only had
00:47:10the one lap at the end now as long as he can still get his lap to the grid or
00:47:14a couple of laps um to
00:47:15get to the grid he's not on a huge response the tricky thing is for the team is same as
00:47:19george
00:47:20yesterday his cars are still new to the team so when they have an issue not always is the procedure
00:47:25as known to be able to come on top of it and to directify it straight away and it's clearly
00:47:29not super
00:47:30clear on the data with a lot of these issues and when it's electronic it's a gremlin that you know
00:47:36you've had other computers something you bang it turn it on and off and suddenly it starts working
00:47:40again and you don't know why uh and that's what's risky because you haven't fixed it the problem is
00:47:45still there somewhere hidden who are they racing today mclaren themselves uh that's what we've seen
00:47:50this year yeah you have a first part of a race where it's racy because the difference you get in
00:47:56in speed when you get the energy at the right spot makes your race about some point you get
00:48:00into your pecking order and that's how the the race then flows i think that is to be one of
00:48:05the
00:48:05characteristics here isn't it we do seem to be getting a lot of racing early on and then it does
00:48:09settle down as jac was saying that is lando he's in the cockpit but still not out of the garage
00:48:17we're
00:48:17going to take a short break when we come back more live on the grid here in shanghai
00:48:29welcome back electrical issues we were just talking about on lando norris's car doesn't
00:48:33look like he's going to make the laps to grid i mean that's going to buy the team another 30
00:48:38minutes
00:48:38not ideal uh the grid won't close up if he does make the laps always not going to make that
00:48:43screen
00:48:43he's probably going to carry more fuel than planned because we're planning for about two uh still in the
00:48:49garage and the pit lane is now closed breaking news by the way overnight just in case you're waking up
00:48:54to
00:48:54this unfortunately no racing in april because bahrain and the saudi arabian grand prix have been
00:49:00cancelled due to the ongoing situation in the gulf in case you weren't watching yesterday here's a
00:49:06wrap-up of what happened on saturday this is the first sprint in 2026 george russell the third british
00:49:13driver on pole in three sprints here in shanghai lights out away we go hamilton gets away brilliantly
00:49:20george russell leads from lando norris hamilton's coming at them russell into the first corner
00:49:26hamilton just behind lando norris second place to seven for poor old kimmy antonelli there a terrible
00:49:32getaway and he got a bad getaway didn't he in australia and now he's made contact with isaac hadjar and
00:49:38now
00:49:39lewis hamilton putting pressure on his old teammate george russell lewis hamilton leads the sprint what an
00:49:45opportune move that one george russell on the inside of the hairpin russell's back in the lead
00:49:50oh they nearly touched the ferraris as hamilton just went out wide
00:49:55does he know how right now this car's coming two ferraris going wheel to wheel over the curve
00:50:00goes charles leclerc somehow they managed to avoid each other charles leclerc stays ahead of lewis
00:50:06hamilton but hamilton can he come back at the hairpin no door slammed well and truly shut in his
00:50:12face there russell wins here in shanghai it's mercedes ferrari ferrari great job mate excellent
00:50:19work today ferrari really close to us in race pace so we probably need to to find a bit of
00:50:23improvement
00:50:23for for the race antonelli fifth piastri sixth and i'll tell you what there's a sprint race i could
00:50:29have had a few more laps welcome to the jungle we've got fun and games alex albon crosses the line
00:50:36he too
00:50:36is out so once again we're going to get two williams out in the first part of qualifying i mean
00:50:43we're
00:50:43like a second off the back of the mid we're just not there the bottom six out in q1 and
00:50:49the double
00:50:49yellows are out because gabriel bortoletto is that just a bit too much entry and then i ended up losing
00:50:55the rear there we lost bortoletto limblad lawson ocon color pinto and hulkenberg george russell
00:51:01stopped to take boots i've got a massive engine break in here toto wolf looks a little bit stunned
00:51:08by that i cannot chip for years here comes kimmy antonelli can he extend his advantage out in front
00:51:14yes he can hamilton crosses the line and he goes to the front row six-time pole sitter here in
00:51:21shanghai
00:51:21and he's on p2 at the moment and antonelli's day is in russell's day it's kimmy antonelli on pole
00:51:28position the youngest pole sitter in grand prix history nice working me that's a full position
00:51:34mate yeah let's go man kimmy antonelli take a bow young man
00:51:43take a bow indeed first italian on pole since belgium in 2009 giancarlo fisichella
00:51:50first mercedes a consecutive front row lockout since barhane sack here back in 2020
00:51:55in cobit lewis hamilton starts third as i mentioned he loves this track won six times
00:51:59around here charles on the other hand doesn't and was behind his teammate uh the uh mclarens of oscar
00:52:05piastri and lando norris on the third row of the grid lando now out the car i'm hearing pierre gasly
00:52:11starts in seventh highest alpine starts saudi last year max verstappen eight tenths away from kimmy
00:52:19antonelli amazing more than that in fact isaac hadjoe one tenth of his teammate ollie behrman
00:52:24another top 10 start for him just outside of that viga holpenberg and franco colapinto with his best
00:52:29qualifying since canada last year ocon lawson linblad portoletto and at the back williams
00:52:37uh out in the first phase of qualifying both sessions this weekend that car is overweight
00:52:43fernando alonso and lance joel and aston martin's problems continuing alex albon changes to his car
00:52:49he will start from the pit lane i've just seen mickey mouse making his way onto the grid one for
00:52:55you
00:52:56ted and bernie to interview thank you very much simon i'll bear that in mind uh morning everybody
00:53:04morning bernie happy mothering sunday if you're in the uk and ireland if you've forgotten that it's
00:53:09happy it's mother's day then you've still got time send your mama text or send her some flowers from
00:53:14the garage tell her you love her if you're sisca norris i've got some bad news for you bernie okay
00:53:19let's get all over this lando got out the car because they needed to remove his seat to get to
00:53:24the electronic control unit there are various bits in that in that box that they need to get the seat
00:53:29out
00:53:29but now they're they're still working on that while lee shows that let's just walk this way and let's go
00:53:35let's actually leave the grid and get a word with andrea stella on the uh on the mclaren pit wall
00:53:40what do you think they're doing now burning yeah so basically the main start whatever it's a pillion
00:53:45start whatever happens they've now bought themselves 25 minutes to try and really ensure they've got to
00:53:51the bottom of the problem what are the difficulties with this car is how tightly packaged it all is
00:53:56so to get into the electrical boxes get it out get it changed it's not a quick fix to get
00:54:02any of that
00:54:03done the team are obviously working as frantically hard as they could they got lando in the car and
00:54:07they hope that it would work correctly but it has not so now they are um getting him back out
00:54:13get back
00:54:14in recheck the boxes disconnect whatever they need to do and then try and get lando back in the car
00:54:19they've got about 25 minutes from now okay uh look look at look at andrea stella just on the pit
00:54:24wall
00:54:24here um we're not allowed to talk to him because he's allowed he's going through whatever's going on
00:54:28maybe i could give him a thumbs up or a or a thumbs down he's not looking at me um
00:54:33it doesn't this looks
00:54:35really bad to me bernie i don't think i don't know it does but the mechanics can turn around quite
00:54:41a lot
00:54:41stella's not even going to look at us and give us the thumbs up yeah they're they're deep they're deep
00:54:46in that car trying to get to whatever electrical box it is the difficulty that we have is if they
00:54:51can't
00:54:51source the box that it is then they have to run through a various number of things it could be
00:54:57any
00:54:57range of different electrical things could be the ecu could be something on the chassis side could be
00:55:03as much as a very small sensor that's been disconnected that they can't get back together
00:55:08so those guys are working on it they know they will have a countdown in there try and get it
00:55:13together as
00:55:13frantically as they can no information no information no okay they won't give a sitting what what what can
00:55:21they say i mean they're still working on it they'll do it as quick as they can i mean maybe
00:55:25you'd say that
00:55:26with where mclaren are at the moment they don't know if they're going to be in in championship
00:55:30contention yet but every point as we know at the end of the year is valuable they don't know they
00:55:35might they might make improvements and challenge the mercedes for wins exactly and you know every
00:55:39race there's a lot that can happen from safety cars to incidents they need to get the learning on
00:55:44this car they need to get the learning on the engine as much as anything else so every lap is
00:55:49vital
00:55:50there's a big concert in town tonight big imagine dragons are playing hi guys how are you doing
00:55:55great doing great yeah so it's the loom tour you've been around you've got tonight and tuesday
00:56:00tonight yeah we played two nights ago and then tonight and then one more on tuesday here yeah fantastic
00:56:05so you like our show here i mean you're in las vegas las vegas regular have you been to that
00:56:09race there
00:56:10no this is my first time at a race but i am a lot i'm born and raised las vegas
00:56:13so i should have gone
00:56:14but i'm always on the road so that's good that's where the fun is to happen now listen have a
00:56:19great
00:56:19gig lovely to see you lovely to see you down there uh from imagine dragons lead singer um so yeah
00:56:25what
00:56:25else can we see around here i mean this a great opportunity you know martin started burning having a
00:56:31look at these new cars uh on uh on the grid in australia i'm keep finding interesting things yeah look
00:56:38at
00:56:38this pitot tube on the on the audi just by the number five of gabriel portoletto yeah why is it
00:56:44we need to get another one to sort of compare it to because normally the pitot tube comes almost
00:56:49vertically if we see if you see it actually on the basin balls here pitot tube tends to come vertically
00:56:54out of the chassis and then do a 90 into the direction of travel of the car so that's very
00:56:59unusual
00:57:00it's almost like a little thin structure do they think they're getting any aero performance from that
00:57:04i'm not sure but that is definitely a standout pitot tube for sure okay all right interesting
00:57:09discussion going over here oliver mintz laugh the uh the boss of red bull motorsport talking to alan
00:57:14permain uh the the uh the boss of uh team principal of racing bulls on the racing bulls i don't
00:57:20understand why this airbox is so massive can you explain it's like somebody designed it on a computer
00:57:25they thought yeah we'll make it that massive so maybe they can slim down the side pods it's too big
00:57:30yeah it is it's noticeably a lot bigger than all of the other cars but their side quad opening if
00:57:36you
00:57:36can see there where the fan goes in is much much smaller so it'll be a balance between where the
00:57:41radiators are for oil or water that's cool in various parts of the engine of the gearbox obviously
00:57:47they've prioritized a bit higher up why that doesn't normally happen is you want to keep the weight as low
00:57:53down on the car as you possibly can okay i've spotted the scenes are interesting so they've changed
00:57:58has come here with a little new wing uh under the exhaust for this race yes but there's a little
00:58:03temperature sticker on there now that we've reduced the uh the motor generator unit heat are are they
00:58:09super look they covered the the top of the crash structure with metal are they getting higher
00:58:14temperatures in that area than before yeah i think they will be seeing slightly higher temperatures
00:58:17and you know having a temperature sticker on there is the quickest and easiest method of figuring out how
00:58:23hot any area of the car gets during the race and that is very common like engineering practice but
00:58:30i think we will be seeing hotter out of the exhaust loads of teams have various different coverings and
00:58:36even when you see it be carbon fiber even when the rear crash structure is carbon fiber in that area
00:58:41it'll be a heated carbon fiber so it'll be a carbon fire that can take a higher temperature than the
00:58:48carbon fiber you would use on the wing for example okay so we've got the hass cars here the aston's
00:58:53behind us the williams behind us so uh still not in uh in uh in the the uh the pit
00:58:59lane but uh this
00:59:01is an interesting little issue on the back of max verstappen's car and um we're just getting the shove
00:59:06from the mechanics fair enough there but we can stand behind the barriers it looks like they've got an
00:59:10issue with the uh the rear wing pillar that uh has come um some fun and games going on here
00:59:16with pedals
00:59:16pedals using his hand as much as he can but yeah it does look like they're trying to change the
00:59:21rear wing support yeah the rear wing pillar support just i'll come running how would that have
00:59:26well they might have seen an issue on the laps of the grade they might have tried to activate drs
00:59:31maybe it's not worked as well or not drs but straight mode i should say and that's a glitch from
00:59:36last year but they could have found something in that area and it might not be the pillar it might
00:59:41actually be maybe the rear suspension in some way the rear suspension obviously
00:59:45mounts in there as well but you can see they've had to take the engine cover off
00:59:50so the engine cover has actually been removed and you can see the tape hanging down at the sides
00:59:55ready to get that engine cover remounted and the tape to back on
