00:00:00Let's go.
00:00:39.
00:01:00And the divisive is 347, which runs third of the defense.
00:01:05And with the two of them, and the divisive is 16.
00:01:09We have a slash line of three, four hundred and four thirty-five.
00:01:14And we'll work now in the middle of the middle of the two.
00:01:18And the divisive is the defense.
00:01:22And the divisive is the defense.
00:01:24And the divisive is the defense.
00:01:47Stolen base and three walks and tonight he hits another home run.
00:01:52I spoke with him pregame and he said last night and bleeding into today.
00:01:56He just felt like a kid again.
00:01:58He said to be able to go out and play freely.
00:02:00He said I loved it.
00:02:02I said what was your favorite part of last night Mike because everybody this morning
00:02:04on social media you know you saw the Mike Trout's back Mike Trout's back and he told
00:02:09me the home run.
00:02:10That was my favorite.
00:02:11He said I know a lot of people were saying the stolen bases because they like to see my
00:02:14speed back to that elite level but he said it was the home run that was the best moment
00:02:18for me.
00:02:19Guys he talks about playing in the center field again for the first time since April 2024.
00:02:23He said I'm just comfortable out there.
00:02:24I have fun.
00:02:25He said you're the quarterback of the outfield and I love it.
00:02:28Guys.
00:02:28Yeah I think that has a large part to do with his bounce back to start this season.
00:02:35He has reached in seven of his first eight plate appearances this year and said from the get
00:02:42go in spring training that he wanted to be back in center field full time.
00:02:49That's kind of a challenge too.
00:02:50We were talking about Jordan and playing left field but you know feeling comfortable that
00:02:54if you if you had him as a DH for 150 games you feel much better to keep that bat
00:02:59in the
00:02:59lineup.
00:03:01No.
00:03:02Same thing with Trout we saw this with George Springer last year with the Toronto Blue Jays.
00:03:06He wanted to keep playing the outfield and then he finally grew comfortable being a DH for
00:03:11George Springer to come back clear of the year.
00:03:13Had his best season in years and he kind of wondered the same thing.
00:03:17Would that be the trajectory of Mike Trout or Jordan.
00:03:22Not just to keep him in the lineup.
00:03:26That's ball misses high for Munoz count runs full.
00:03:31Now that's the thing with center fielder center field is a younger position.
00:03:37That's a that's a spot where you usually don't see guys in their mid-30s.
00:03:44Trout sends this one deep to right.
00:03:46Smith in front of the track.
00:03:49No trouble.
00:03:54Statcast powered by Google Cloud taking a look at Trout's hits tonight.
00:04:01Home run again that was so impressive.
00:04:04109 off the bat just because the pitch was inside.
00:04:07It was a fastball in under his hands.
00:04:14Yeah but as you said earlier that's that's old Mike Trout Nitro Zone.
00:04:25Sean O'Wells reached twice.
00:04:40last time I've spent a really
00:04:43productive amount of time during
00:04:46spring training with hitting
00:04:47coach Brady Anderson making some
00:04:50adjustments.
00:04:54I got to say to talk about Kurt
00:04:57Suzuki being in his first season as
00:04:59a manager he has a really
00:05:01experienced staff of coaches
00:05:03around him and then you sprinkle
00:05:05in a couple of guys on the base
00:05:07pass that have interesting
00:05:10backgrounds that Adam Eaton another
00:05:11guy who's just out of being a
00:05:14player and Keith Johnson over a
00:05:16third who's coached or managed
00:05:18almost all the Angels young players
00:05:20at double a or triple a over the
00:05:22last couple of years.
00:05:23Yeah then over his left shoulder
00:05:24you have the salty that John
00:05:26Givens just is constantly calling
00:05:29him down.
00:05:33The real coup was Mike Maddox.
00:05:36Yes.
00:05:36They're pitching coach.
00:05:42Mike Mike Maddox doggy areas to
00:05:45the left.
00:05:46And every time you watch him go
00:05:47out to the mound he puts his
00:05:49right hand on the shoulder of the
00:05:52pitcher to calm him down.
00:05:54It's that Vulcan connection.
00:05:59No looping breaking ball that
00:06:01just misses and puts Sean well
00:06:04aboard.
00:06:04They're going to challenge the
00:06:08previous pitch was called the
00:06:10ball the pitcher's challenge.
00:06:12No it's going to say his late
00:06:15challenge and the pitcher wanted
00:06:16Yiner Diaz didn't signal for it and
00:06:18they are now out of challenges.
00:06:20Come on.
00:06:22Houston has 0 remaining.
00:06:27That's why pitchers should be
00:06:29challenging.
00:06:30Did you say I didn't see.
00:06:31No.
00:06:32I didn't see him challenge.
00:06:33So you know we've already seen
00:06:36other pitchers challenge and
00:06:37they're they're 0 for on the
00:06:38season.
00:06:45A.B.S. challenge system powered
00:06:47by T-Mobile.
00:06:48I'm sure it's going to be.
00:06:51A fascinating watch to see how
00:06:53it's deployed.
00:06:56Some teams have a policy
00:06:58prohibiting pitchers from
00:06:59challenging.
00:07:07Well already based on some of the
00:07:08numbers we saw during spring
00:07:09training pitchers were not good
00:07:11at it at all.
00:07:13Hitters were OK and the catchers
00:07:15were the best.
00:07:27And now it's a 3 and 0 count to
00:07:30Soler here's the breakdown from
00:07:32spring training and you see
00:07:35catchers having much more
00:07:37success not as bad a percentage
00:07:40from the pitchers as I thought
00:07:41there would be.
00:07:46A.B.S. hitters who had the
00:07:47worst.
00:07:54That's a four pitch walk.
00:07:56You see the energy has kind of
00:07:57give him a pump up like give him
00:07:59the fist.
00:08:00Now this is something that the
00:08:01coaching staff has asked Diaz to
00:08:03be more proactive more
00:08:05reflective.
00:08:07Joe Spott has seen enough he's
00:08:09going to go back to the bullpen.
00:08:16Alex said it, but it just
00:08:19feels like being done every
00:08:21week .
00:08:35And .
00:10:08Weekend Mercedes coming in hot one to finish in China the race will be 1 a.m. Eastern 10 p
00:10:15.m. Pacific Saturday night into Sunday morning on Apple TV.
00:10:20The new U.S. home of Formula One actually practice three is tonight at 10 30 Eastern and qualifying at
00:10:272 a.m.
00:10:28Like our director Jason Lobb.
00:10:30Stay up for that for sure.
00:10:32Steven Okert out of the Astros bullpen.
00:10:37And he catches the corner for strike two on John Moncada.
00:10:41Three run lead for the Angels.
00:10:43But this is a great opportunity for the Angels.
00:10:45If you can find an extra base hit.
00:10:47An opportunity to put this game away.
00:10:54On the ground for Moncada the third.
00:10:56Correa the second for one.
00:10:58On the first.
00:10:59Not in time.
00:11:03Bang bang play as they try to turn two and end the inning.
00:11:10We'll see if the Astros use their video replay challenge.
00:11:15Thanks bang bang and it looks like the foot's already on the back before the ball is going into the
00:11:21glove of Walker.
00:11:30So Moncada beats it out.
00:11:32It's a fielder's choice.
00:11:34Sean Well the third.
00:11:36Solaire erased.
00:11:39And Joe Adele the bat.
00:11:53Two lefties for the Astros.
00:11:56We will see more when you get Josh Hader back.
00:11:59But they do have two good ones in Brian King and Steven Okert.
00:12:06Pops this foul.
00:12:14Suzuki has said Joe Adele starting to become more of a leader in the Angels clubhouse.
00:12:24He's taking charge in some conversations with teammates.
00:12:28Starting to assert himself a little bit more.
00:12:31You can understand that after such a big season last year.
00:12:35The expectations now are heightened.
00:12:36See if he can follow it up.
00:12:41Rear high ninety eight runs bad at the end last season.
00:12:46Spot here.
00:12:47With two on and two out.
00:12:48And it's ball two.
00:12:50From Okra.
00:13:06Strike three called.
00:13:09Another challenge.
00:13:11A slider that.
00:13:13The previous pitch.
00:13:14Was called a strike.
00:13:16The batter is down.
00:13:19Let's see if it caught the corner.
00:13:20Angels have yet to lose one.
00:13:24It is strike three.
00:13:27And they're down the way.
00:13:28The call is confirmed.
00:13:30Los Angeles has one count remaining.
00:13:32Adele rung up and two are left stranded.
00:14:02Let's see if he can be spotted.
00:15:42Third and the ball is thrown away.
00:15:45Josh Lowe cranks a three-run homer to left.
00:15:48Back-to-back defensive James Trout turns back the clock again.
00:15:57Angels leading the Astros 5-2 as we hit the seventh inning stretch in Houston.
00:16:05Zephyr John remains in for the Halos after a 1-2-3-6 first time that the Astros have been
00:16:14retired in order here tonight.
00:16:18The top of their lineup bats here with Pena Alvarez and Paredes.
00:16:30Astros have left seven men on base.
00:16:35They are one for six with runners in scoring position.
00:16:39They had a lot of chances but also the Angels defensively have taken their chances and put them away.
00:16:53Pena two for three.
00:16:56Pena two singles and he pops this up to shallow left.
00:17:03Neto puts it away.
00:17:05Let's take a look at pitching decisions presented by Sage.
00:17:08Well, not a good decision for Yusei Kikuchi to miss with the slider to Yordan middle in.
00:17:15First homer of the year for Yordan and he's one of the best left on left in baseball.
00:17:22And we talked about it all the time.
00:17:23Last year only 48 gains for Yordan and we said imagine the Yankees without Aaron Judge.
00:17:30Imagine you know even last year the Philadelphia Phillies without Kyle Schwarber he was second in NL MVP voting.
00:17:40Just got to keep him healthy.
00:17:42That's it.
00:17:44Alvarez with another drive to right field.
00:17:47This one will stay in the yard.
00:17:51Dale makes the catch for the second out.
00:17:59I don't know if you saw this Alex but they've called it shrink gate when it comes to the ABS
00:18:02system.
00:18:03They've been measuring all the different players since we've seen the ABS tonight's our first night seeing it on the
00:18:09broadcast.
00:18:09They measured all the players during spring training.
00:18:12There were some notable players that shrunk.
00:18:16Gavin Lux was 6'2".
00:18:18Now he's 5'11".
00:18:21Former Astro Alex Bregman was six foot.
00:18:24Now he's 5'10".
00:18:26Then he had a couple where guys actually got taller.
00:18:30Ellie Dela Cruz is up to 6'7".
00:18:32Oh really?
00:18:32Yeah.
00:18:33I always thought that was a mismeasurement.
00:18:366'6".
00:18:37He's like six million.
00:18:38I'm surprised it's only seven.
00:18:40Conor Wong went from 6'1 to 5'10".
00:18:55The idea is to get it right.
00:18:59Without being too much of a drag on the pace of play.
00:19:03I do think after seeing it in action the last two games because it caught me off guard even on
00:19:08the strikeout last inning.
00:19:11The count levels of two and two here to Paredes is that everybody from the batters to the pitchers I
00:19:17think they need to be more demonstrative.
00:19:20With their signal.
00:19:21Agreed.
00:19:21It's hard to tell when a hitter goes to his helmet because that's a normal baseball move.
00:19:27You see guys adjust their helmets all the time.
00:19:29Yeah.
00:19:30Either that or just have the signal just do the replay signal or the home run type signal.
00:19:35You see that in college basketball if they want to review spin their finger around.
00:19:44And then I think there's going to be a nuance of if players are challenging in time.
00:19:52I could see some arguments come about from managers about that.
00:19:56Because you're supposed to do it within two seconds.
00:20:02Well they're trying to get it right and I'm pleased with what we've seen so far.
00:20:06Yeah.
00:20:19Pay off to Paredes is called strike three.
00:20:22And the Astros have no recourse.
00:20:25A one, two, three, seventh for Zephyr John.
00:20:29He's retired all six batters he's faced.
00:20:34We head to the eighth.
00:20:35Can you grow to the ninth?
00:20:51All three...
00:20:53Can you see?
00:20:55Please leave the second.
00:20:57Can you see...
00:20:59three thirty seven, which right is third,
00:21:01and the current score is three.
00:21:04And with the two of them,
00:21:05using out the distance,
00:21:06and the middle of 60 games,
00:21:08with the slash line,
00:21:09three three four hundred and four thirty five,
00:21:13and the low right now,
00:21:1433.
00:21:15This is the major,
00:21:17and the key is,
00:21:19and the top,
00:21:19those are under the six of the main
00:21:21Sinti-Demeyer and the draw.
00:21:23And the center now,
00:21:25and the left,
00:21:25and the neighbor's first was behind.
00:22:45And find your local Essilor expert at Essilor.com.
00:22:52Alex Faust, Ryan's Billboards, Trisha Whittaker here with you in Houston.
00:22:555-2, the Angels out in front.
00:22:57They have not started a season 2-0 since 2007.
00:23:05A three-hit night for Mike Trout.
00:23:09Following up yesterday's performance.
00:23:13Back-to-back homers.
00:23:16Back-to-back games with a home run, I should say, for Trout.
00:23:19To begin the year, something he's never done in his major league career.
00:23:237, 8, and 9 here for the Angels.
00:23:27In the top of the eighth.
00:23:28And Josh Lowe has rung up quickly.
00:23:35Ohapi coming to the plate.
00:23:37Trisha?
00:23:38Alex, you guys were talking about Suzuki when he came out to visit Ohapi at the plate earlier.
00:23:42And you said he understands what that's like because he was a catcher.
00:23:45And, in fact, when we were speaking to Suzuki before the game,
00:23:48he was speaking about, you know, winning his first game as a major league manager.
00:23:53He said that the game didn't really speed up on him.
00:23:56And the reason for that was that he was a catcher.
00:23:59He said, I don't want to say I'm overconfident from being a catcher
00:24:02because the game does move fast.
00:24:04But he said, as a catcher, you're always looking at these situations.
00:24:06And he said, as a player, that prepared me for the job of managing a major league baseball team.
00:24:13Alex, I think it was you who asked him,
00:24:14did the game speed up yesterday in his first major league game?
00:24:18That's the reason why he said it didn't.
00:24:20He didn't want to sound overconfident.
00:24:23about it because he's a newbie to that position.
00:24:29But I think it's been true across baseball history that there are many former catchers
00:24:36who made good managers for that precise reason.
00:24:45Fly ball from Ohapi to left.
00:24:48Alvarez will jog in.
00:24:50And it'll be caught by Pena.
00:24:54Take a look at the profile for Kurt Suzuki,
00:24:58who has been part of the Angels organization the last couple of years.
00:25:01I like him a lot.
00:25:02And to that point, I mean, certain guys,
00:25:05when you start transitioning from not being an everyday player
00:25:08to a role player,
00:25:09and they start to kind of refine their ability
00:25:13to talk to players, almost a player coach.
00:25:22But there's something to be said when you have a former catcher,
00:25:25because there's a dialogue that you have to have with your catcher
00:25:29and then with the pitching staff.
00:25:30You have to know how to talk to a pitcher.
00:25:32Some guys, you need to blow smoke.
00:25:34Other guys, you need to, you know, pat them on the back.
00:25:39And then there's the other soft skill aspect of being a manager in today's game
00:25:45is that athletes have changed from 20 years ago.
00:25:49And the Angels tried this a little bit in spring training
00:25:52with these show-and-go days,
00:25:53where the time wasn't as structured to the ballpark.
00:25:57Come in whenever time you want,
00:25:59but you have to get your work done.
00:26:01We're just not going to hold you to a strict time to clock in for work.
00:26:05And the players seem to enjoy that.
00:26:12Suzuki signing only a one-year contract.
00:26:16As this looping breaking ball misses from Oker,
00:26:19his GM in Perry Manassian
00:26:22and also has only one year remaining.
00:26:26You can interpret that in whatever way you wish
00:26:29in terms of what ownership might think about
00:26:32this current Angels situation.
00:26:41Another strikeout for Oker.
00:26:44As Peraza is banned.
00:26:47We head to the bottom of the eighth.
00:27:01Okay, thank you.
00:29:19The middle third of the Astros order all to vague Correa and Cam Smith.
00:29:28New pitcher in for the Angels as well.
00:29:31Sam Bachman comes out of the bullpen.
00:29:35Twenty four appearances of the major league level for Bachman last season.
00:29:44This is where it can get tight for the Angels.
00:29:45This is something that they have to improve upon from last year as the pitching staff and making sure you
00:29:50get more strikeouts less walks.
00:29:52And this Astros team they've they've hung in this game.
00:29:55They've hung in this game.
00:30:05Two bay one for two.
00:30:08He's reached twice tonight.
00:30:13And to your points Billy.
00:30:19Angels issued the most walks in
00:30:21baseball as you see defensive
00:30:22changes they've made Joe Adele
00:30:23moves over the left and Bryce
00:30:25Teodosio enters the game.
00:30:31Now it's a strike on the inner
00:30:33half.
00:30:33Angels have the second worst
00:30:34strikeout to walk ratio.
00:30:36Their bullpen 28th in ERA and
00:30:39had the most blown saves in the
00:30:41majors.
00:30:42Yeah that's not good.
00:30:44There's a reason why you've seen
00:30:47a couple changes for managers
00:30:49over the last couple years is
00:30:50it's so hard to manage the bad
00:30:53bullpen.
00:30:56Strike three called on all two
00:30:58vain.
00:30:59And they're out of challenges.
00:31:05He's got Brady Saturday a pitch on
00:31:07the outside that would have gone
00:31:09for a ball but they were out of
00:31:10challenges and that one right on
00:31:11the edge it would have been a
00:31:12strike.
00:31:13And they're out of the way.
00:31:19Jon Tampain's been good behind
00:31:20home plate tonight.
00:31:22I think there's one thing we're
00:31:23learning from the challenge system
00:31:24right away as the umpires are
00:31:25pretty good.
00:31:28Tampain is known as the ripper on
00:31:31social media for how his punch
00:31:33out looks like he's driving a
00:31:35dagger into the hitter.
00:31:40So with Altuve rung up here's
00:31:42Correa.
00:31:43By the way there is a significant
00:31:44change to how Major League Baseball
00:31:46is developing future umpires.
00:31:48They are no longer outsourcing
00:31:51umpiring schools.
00:31:52Everything is done in-house now and
00:31:54the key thing for baseball is they
00:31:56don't want prospective umpires to
00:31:58have to pay tuition to a third
00:32:00party school.
00:32:01As this will curl in to foul ground
00:32:04there are free one-day clinics
00:32:06that baseball is providing and the
00:32:10main umpiring development program
00:32:12is completely free of charge.
00:32:15They want to get more guys in the
00:32:17system.
00:32:20Try to make the umpiring core a
00:32:22little younger.
00:32:28I see it at the youth level.
00:32:29I mean there's a lot less
00:32:30umpires that want to umpire because
00:32:33it's not fun.
00:32:39We talk about the fabric of
00:32:42baseball how much umpires are
00:32:44part of the seed.
00:32:45Before the start of every game
00:32:47players will say hi to every
00:32:48single umpire and like you really
00:32:50do get to know these.
00:32:54These people that that are making
00:32:56the game efficient.
00:32:58It's ball four five pitch walk
00:33:00issued to Correa.
00:33:03And I think that's where this ABS
00:33:05system that we've implemented that's
00:33:08part of the fabric of the game that's
00:33:10still there.
00:33:10It's not a fully automated system.
00:33:12Ted Barrett former major league
00:33:13umpire joins us for the chunk of the
00:33:16season to analyze some of the rules
00:33:18and nuances that you know what what's
00:33:20your take on how MLB is now
00:33:24developing umpires in this new era.
00:33:27Yeah we have a new system where um we
00:33:30have some free umpire camps guys
00:33:32to come out to whatever city we
00:33:34happy to be in.
00:33:35We're gonna do five more this year.
00:33:37It's a I think it's a great system
00:33:38because like you said they don't
00:33:40have to pay tuition to a uh to go
00:33:43to school.
00:33:44It's great for people that maybe
00:33:45could not have afforded it before
00:33:47uh for some underserved communities
00:33:49and uh yeah we're thrilled about the
00:33:52prospects that we've been getting
00:33:53over the last few years.
00:33:54We appreciate the insight Ted.
00:33:59Love Teddy Barrett.
00:34:04Am Smith now the runner aboard here
00:34:06in the eighth.
00:34:11Where's that walk in for the angels
00:34:13I mean now you're looking for a
00:34:16ball in the dirt just because the
00:34:17infield's been so good.
00:34:18See if you can roll it.
00:34:27That's really important as you see
00:34:29the elite bullpens do not give
00:34:32free passes late the game.
00:34:33I mean that's it's a rally
00:34:35starter.
00:34:36A walk is a rally.
00:34:45Pitching is one area where the
00:34:46angels still have a lot of
00:34:48question marks.
00:34:49Both in their rotation and in their
00:34:52bullpen.
00:34:57There's that number we talked about
00:35:00with the blown saves last year.
00:35:04Ben Joyce is on the men after
00:35:07shoulder surgery last May.
00:35:10Remember he touched 100 on the
00:35:12radar gun with ease was a phenom
00:35:14when he first came up.
00:35:17They'll have him back before long.
00:35:24As you mentioned Kirby Yates on
00:35:26the aisle to begin the season.
00:35:27Former All-Star.
00:35:31Ben Joyce's the angels version of
00:35:34Mason Miller.
00:35:42Cam Smith 0 for 3 tonight.
00:35:44And he swings through that
00:35:47off speed pitch.
00:35:53It's a big punch out.
00:35:56You see nothing but.
00:36:00High octane fastballs and then
00:36:02he throws a slider off of it.
00:36:04And he could tell like camps front
00:36:07hip who's already leaking out
00:36:08trying to catch up to the fastball.
00:36:12The second time Smith has struck
00:36:14out tonight.
00:36:14Here's Christian Walker's rush
00:36:16back at ninety eight.
00:36:40The Astros bullpen Brian Abreu
00:36:42getting loose.
00:36:43Just in case he's needed.
00:36:45Ryan Weiss as well.
00:36:52Up here the Angels.
00:36:55You want to be clean.
00:36:57In your next.
00:36:59In your next outs.
00:37:00Your next four outs.
00:37:01Because one more.
00:37:02Base runner that gets on it.
00:37:04It guarantees that Jordan gets a
00:37:06hit.
00:37:09Half swing.
00:37:09Walker.
00:37:10Tied in the north.
00:37:18So Drew Pomeranz they're warming
00:37:20one of those veterans brought
00:37:21aboard.
00:37:23Pitch for the Cubs last year.
00:37:29To two.
00:37:31Misses inside.
00:37:34Count runs full on Christian
00:37:36Walker.
00:37:40In his second season with the
00:37:41Astros.
00:37:47Runner takes off and Walker ahead
00:37:49of this one.
00:37:51I was talking to a couple of
00:37:52people about Christian Walker
00:37:53last year you know started off
00:37:55on a bad note had the oblique
00:37:56injury and then.
00:37:58really struggled.
00:37:59Offensively early on it and some
00:38:01people thought.
00:38:03He was just trying to pull the
00:38:05ball into the Crawford boxes.
00:38:06His strength is right center gap
00:38:08and it took off for him in the
00:38:09second half of the season.
00:38:17That's ball four.
00:38:23No.
00:38:33That's ball four.
00:38:40That means.
00:38:40He's trying to take that fast
00:38:42ball right center.
00:38:43And as a result he ended up
00:38:45blasting secondary pitches in the
00:38:47second half.
00:38:48So all those off speed pitches that
00:38:49he was.
00:38:50Out in front of he start crushing
00:38:53and the numbers.
00:38:55I mean they show you.
00:38:58Christian said he lost 10 to 12
00:39:00pounds this off season to try to
00:39:02help improve his range get back
00:39:04to being an elite defender maybe
00:39:06cut down on some of that injury
00:39:07trouble as well.
00:39:09And with these two walks issued by
00:39:11Sam Bachman what it does and you
00:39:13pointed this out a couple of
00:39:14moments ago is it will give your
00:39:16Don Alvarez.
00:39:17Another at bat.
00:39:21Walks will haunt you.
00:39:23They always do.
00:39:25Yiner Diaz will bat here.
00:39:27The eight hole hitter.
00:39:31Nine one and two will be
00:39:32guaranteed.
00:39:34To get at least one more look.
00:39:37If Yiner runs into when we have
00:39:39a tie ball game.
00:39:4520 homers last year.
00:39:50Diaz downs off.
00:39:55It's actually a single season
00:39:57record for homers by a catcher
00:39:59in Astros history last year.
00:40:01Those 20.
00:40:03You see.
00:40:05Now both teams have struggled with
00:40:08runners in scoring position.
00:40:09Angel's got a lot of the bats
00:40:10early in the game with so much
00:40:11traffic.
00:40:17O2 on the way.
00:40:19Fastball misses upstairs.
00:40:34Diaz strikes out.
00:40:37Backman with three K's in the
00:40:39inning and despite issuing the two
00:40:42walks works out of the jam.
00:40:49one more look as we head to the ninth
00:40:53in Houston.
00:40:59game.
00:41:05Go.
00:41:07Go.
00:41:20Go.b
00:43:23And we have a Major League debut to tell you about with Ryan Weiss, 29 years of age who spent
00:43:30the last two years in Korea.
00:43:32He spent time in independent bull in Chinese Taipei.
00:43:38And this ball is out of the park and not away, but he'd like to make his debut.
00:43:44Zach Neto with an absolute rocket.
00:43:50And it extends the Angels lead to 6-2.
00:43:53Well, now Zach Neto's adding that insurance run, making a four-run lead for the Angels, and to have this
00:44:00type of player at the top of your lineup, a 20-20 player a year ago, also sparkling defense tonight.
00:44:08For Zach, 102 off the bat.
00:44:11This is a Crawford box home run, 358 feet.
00:44:28I'll bring up Trout.
00:44:33Well, according to StatCast, this homerun for Neto is a homerun in one ballpark here.
00:44:48Counts just the same.
00:44:49Yep.
00:44:50And that's the beauty of this sport.
00:44:57When Zach first got to the big leagues, he had this giant leg kick, and he's just learned to, you
00:45:02know, twist his feet, keep his feet a little bit more grounded.
00:45:07How about that Angels fan in the front row?
00:45:09Yeah, nice play.
00:45:11That's quite a reaction, too.
00:45:12You get to catch a homerun ball from your own team in a visiting park.
00:45:18Front row in the Crawford boxes, it's a pretty good place to sit if you're going to grab one.
00:45:26How about that?
00:45:30Mom rocking the old school Angels jersey, too.
00:45:33Yeah, I had that one as a kid.
00:45:34Yeah.
00:45:37No.
00:45:39Good pick.
00:45:44That's pretty cool.
00:45:46That's what you go to the ballpark for.
00:45:48And you're getting some love from some of the home fans, as well.
00:45:58Going back to Ryan Weiss, we had a chance to interview him this offseason on MLB Network Radio.
00:46:05He was just floored by the opportunity.
00:46:20He was just a long way to go bouncing around from the minors, you know, the Diamondbacks organization,
00:46:30the Diamondbacks organization, the Independent Ball, the Overseas.
00:46:36Now.
00:46:37Walks Trout here.
00:46:47We had a couple stories like that tonight, right, from the Houston Astros.
00:46:51Hunter Brown had a story similar.
00:46:59He's didn't take him overseas, it was more in his college journey.
00:47:07And even last night, too, we're talking about hometown stories.
00:47:11There was a nice one of the Astros bullpen with Christian Roa, Houston native.
00:47:18Memorial High School.
00:47:18Yeah, big Astros fan growing up.
00:47:22Got to debut on opening day.
00:47:25This is lying up the middle for a base hit.
00:47:30Sean Well, has reached four times tonight.
00:47:34Hang out.
00:47:35And Weiss has yet to record now.
00:47:41Well, everything Angels, the first two days in Houston, they're finding holes, they're playing good defense,
00:47:48catching the Astros off guard.
00:47:59Quick chat from Carlos Correa with Ryan Weiss.
00:48:04Steady voice of veteran in this franchise.
00:48:23The feeling a team has when you haven't won a game to start the season, it does feel like you're
00:48:30never going to win.
00:48:31It really does.
00:48:32You just want to get get one in the books.
00:48:35That's why it was fun for for Suzuki to get his first out of the way on opening day.
00:48:40Toasted with a bottle of wine.
00:48:44In a laundry cart.
00:48:46Well, shower.
00:48:47I was going to say after the beer shower from his from his club.
00:48:52There's Solaire.
00:48:54He takes Lone away.
00:49:14And Solaire strikes out.
00:49:20One other story that we didn't get a chance to get to in the action of the game.
00:49:24This is a cool one.
00:49:26That's the bench coach for the Astros, Omar Lopez, who threw out the first pitch on opening day here in
00:49:32Houston.
00:49:36And he got to throw it out to longtime bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte, who also had that role for Venezuela
00:49:49at the World Baseball Classic.
00:49:50We got a chance to talk with Omar earlier today and that victory for Venezuela.
00:49:56I know baseball fans have seen how much it meant to the country.
00:50:00This fly ball drifts towards the corner and Alvarez is there.
00:50:08But talking with Omar, he said this moment might be singularly transformative for baseball in the country of Venezuela.
00:50:17I was there for it and covering it for Sirius XM.
00:50:20And, I mean, more tears than you could ever imagine.
00:50:24Every player had tears.
00:50:25They were so proud.
00:50:26I mean, just for everything going on, it was, you know, a couple weeks of taking your mind
00:50:32and knowing that your family is watching baseball and watching them represent their country.
00:50:40It was special.
00:50:42It was an unbelievable run for Venezuela and some of the players on that roster.
00:50:48I mean, it was filled with all-stars and silver sluggers and MVP.
00:50:51By the way, he...
00:50:59He...
00:51:00Lopez has been part of the Astros organization for 25 years.
00:51:05He joined...
00:51:05He joined...
00:51:06Joe Espatta on the Major League Coaching Staff.
00:51:08In 2020, they used to carpool to the park together.
00:51:12When Espatta was named the manager, Lopez, of course, would be the bench coach.
00:51:17coach their relationship is
00:51:19that tight but he served as a
00:51:21scout and infield instructor
00:51:22he's managed in the minor
00:51:23leagues he's had winter league
00:51:25managerial roles in Venezuela
00:51:27and Puerto Rico is a baseball
00:51:30lifer strike three here as a
00:51:39Dale his fan the Angels
00:51:47hit a couple of long balls
00:51:48tonight and it's a 6-2 lead to
00:51:50the bottom of the ninth.
00:52:46hens
00:52:46hens
00:52:46hens
00:54:24But he's lost a little feel for the fastball.
00:54:28But he's always had a great slider.
00:54:31That's his calling card.
00:54:33And if he's throwing strikes, he's tough to square up.
00:54:38Not a save situation here.
00:54:43But he comes into the game trying to put the finishing touches on another Angels victory.
00:54:52Former All-Star Romano talked about Kirby Yates being on the I.L.
00:54:58And Kurt Suzuki said he's not going to name a closer right now.
00:55:01There are too many moving parts right now.
00:55:03Yeah, closer by committee.
00:55:04There are too many things that I'm going to do in the I.L.
00:55:10And Joe Spotted going to Joey Loperfito.
00:55:12Loperfito was part of a trade to Toronto.
00:55:16And then they brought him back.
00:55:17They love him.
00:55:18Yesterday, I had a nice day offensively.
00:55:29This gets away from Romano.
00:55:31And then to the fastball's been touch and go.
00:55:37This is an interesting trade tree, if you will.
00:55:42You say Kikuchi was involved in the trade that sent Joey Loperfito to the Blue Jays from the Astros.
00:55:54And then they got him back, they traded Jesus Sanchez, who they made a trade last year with the Marlins,
00:55:59and they sent him to Toronto.
00:56:06Loperfito strikes out.
00:56:08Well, the first out of the ninth.
00:56:13He just wanted to prevent any sort of leadoff base runner, just because you don't want any traffic in front
00:56:19of Jeremy Pena and Jordan.
00:56:21That's the good look of the slider.
00:56:23And the depth of the slider is really interesting, because it goes down.
00:56:28Usually, you'll see a little bit more east to west with certain sliders.
00:56:32His is just funky.
00:56:38Kind of got that hitchy, over-the-top thing going on.
00:56:41Yeah, he's not comfortable at bat.
00:56:52Jeremy Pena making his season debut.
00:56:59A couple of base knocks tonight.
00:57:03And Pena on the fly ball, the deep right.
00:57:06Bryce Teodosio into the game for the Angels, drifting back, and he makes the catch.
00:57:11He inserted as a defensive replacement in the eighth.
00:57:15I said that.
00:57:18Perfect time to face Jordan in the ninth inning is with nobody on and two outs.
00:57:22There you go.
00:57:24You can't hit a four-run homer.
00:57:32He did go yard for the first time this season in the fifth.
00:57:38But the Astros are down to their final out.
00:57:58Ball on a strike to Alvarez.
00:58:01It's wild to think that if the Angels win the first two games of the season,
00:58:07it's the first time they've done that since 2007, 19 years.
00:58:39The Astros are down to their first two games.
00:58:41And the third game, or the third game, I should say, of this four-game series tomorrow.
00:58:55And if you're wondering at home, does it hurt when you break a bat, the answer is yes.
00:59:01It does hurt your hands.
00:59:03It feels great when you barrel it.
00:59:05You can't feel it off the bat.
00:59:07But when you get sawed off, yeah, that hurts.
00:59:11Hurts the wall to the equipment manager.
00:59:13I'm going to go out and buy a new one.
00:59:15Those bats are about over $100.
00:59:21Alvarez strikes out, and the Angels are 2-0 to begin the season for the first time since 2007.
00:59:31Jordan Romano putting the finishing touches on this game.
00:59:36And Kurt Suzuki, a 2-0 start as the Angels manager, Mike Trout,
00:59:44continues to have a tremendous start to his season.
00:59:49Yeah, it's so great to see Trout being Trouty, being Mike Trout again.
00:59:53And then for, you know, the side stories, Josh Lowe, huge homer, first homer as an Angel.
00:59:58Oh, my God.
00:59:59Oh, my God.
00:59:59Oh, my God.
