00:23:59He said, I don't want to say I'm overconfident from being a catcher
00:24:02because the game does move fast.
00:24:04But he said, as a catcher, you're always looking at these situations.
00:24:06And he said, as a player, that prepared me for the job of managing a major league baseball team.

00:25:25because there's a dialogue that you have to have with your catcher
00:25:29and then with the pitching staff.
00:25:30You have to know how to talk to a pitcher.
00:25:32Some guys, you need to blow smoke.
00:25:34Other guys, you need to, you know, pat them on the back.
00:25:39And then there's the other soft skill aspect of being a manager in today's game
00:25:45is that athletes have changed from 20 years ago.
00:25:49And the Angels tried this a little bit in spring training
00:25:52with these show-and-go days,
00:25:53where the time wasn't as structured to the ballpark.
00:25:57Come in whenever time you want,
00:25:59but you have to get your work done.
00:26:01We're just not going to hold you to a strict time to clock in for work.
00:26:05And the players seem to enjoy that.

00:32:10main umpiring development program
00:32:12is completely free of charge.
00:32:15They want to get more guys in the
00:32:17system.

00:32:22little younger.

00:32:29I mean there's a lot less
00:32:30umpires that want to umpire because
00:32:33it's not fun.
00:32:39We talk about the fabric of
00:32:42baseball how much umpires are
00:32:44part of the seed.

00:32:47players will say hi to every
00:32:48single umpire and like you really
00:32:50do get to know these.
00:32:54These people that that are making
00:32:56the game efficient.
