00:05is the Giants wide receiver room looking better or is it looking worse than on paper than last
00:11year's room at this time yes you lose Wondell Robinson but they did add Darnell Mooney and
00:16Calvin Austin the third so we're talking receivers on this episode of Blue Rush
00:21Paul Schwartz our Giants beat writer for the post is on Paul you're a former receiver yourself too
00:27right let's see let's see what I've received in my life okay I've received advice I've received
00:37criticism no I was more of a giver than a receiver I would say in my life overall I think
00:46my hands are
00:46okay but my 40 my 40 time is is clocked I don't think you need the seconds hands you know
00:55you
00:55know it's more it's more like you know half an hour type things yeah so well I don't think my
01:00escapability was a big a big factor in you know not at all well luckily for the Giants they signed
01:06two receivers who do have some pretty amazing 40 times and they put a lot of speed on tape during
01:13the course of their NFL careers they signed Darnell Mooney Calvin Austin the third to some pretty
01:19team frilly deals as well Paul Mooney had his best season under offense coordinator Matt Nagy and
01:25Harbaugh coached against Austin twice a season in the AFC North we got ourselves some camp battles
01:32and competition for us to keep our eyes out on so what does the Mooney and Austin signing tell you
01:40about what they may or may not do with Darius Slayton and Jalen Hyatt well I mean Jalen Hyatt I
01:48don't think
01:48there's any place for Jalen Hyatt on the team you know I just don't I mean he'll he'll come to
01:52camp
01:53I assume and he'll compete I assume um you know but you know I don't imagine he'll be able to
01:59beat
01:59out the two guys they signed now look the two guys they signed are here on one year contracts right
02:04um you know Austin's got a one year 1.5 million dollar contract Mooney's got what one year three
02:10million dollar contract so you know you just have to follow the money here this is not big investments
02:15um I'm I would say not shocked but certainly more than surprised that this was the market for these
02:22two guys which is basically no market at all getting you know you know Austin's getting a you know uh
02:27pretty much a veteran minimum contract here 1.5 million dollars um you know now Darius Slayton's a
02:33different animal because you know Darius Slayton last year signed a three-year 36 million dollar deal
02:39he's Brandon he's basically uncuttable you know what I mean he his cap number this year Brandon is
02:45slightly higher than yours okay 15.9 million okay that's slightly higher than yours I would guess
02:53right just a little something a little something if you round up if you round up you round yeah yeah
02:57we're not going to make it 16 let's keep it right 15.9 million his dead cap number if they
03:04would cut
03:04him is 15.7 million what does that tell you his contract last year his three-year 36 million dollar
03:12contract was really a two-year contract you know it's a two-year contract you can't cut him after
03:18one year because you're not going to take you get no cap savings um you're not going to be able
03:23to
03:23trade him so I think Darius Slayton's on the team I mean and John Harbaugh may look at it and
03:27say you
03:27guys signed him to a bad contract because I've got guys that I like as well or better for a
03:31fraction
03:32of the cost you know Harbaugh can't clean up everybody's mess right so um that's that so I
03:37think Slayton's on the team and now but I think his playing time is certainly not guaranteed
03:41all right Wondell departs to go to the new new Nashville Titans so on paper right now do you think
03:48this Giants receiver room looks better or worse than it did at this point last season heading into
03:55the draft I'm going to have to add one thing to this and then I'll answer okay I think you
04:01have
04:01to put Isaiah Likely in this conversation okay I really do now I know you're a receiver you don't
04:08want those tight ends in your room I get it you go to your room with your three or four
04:12people
04:12you know you lumbering lumberjack tight ends I get it we're the cool wide receivers we're
04:18we're the fashion plates we stay in our own room but you know Likely has to be talked about here
04:24because he is a receiving tight end let me give you some numbers okay tell me how interesting you
04:29think that is Wondell's numbers last year right um 92 catches 1014 yards and four touchdowns right
04:38okay yeah those are his numbers the three players that I believe they signed to replace him Isaiah
04:45Likely Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin those three players combined last year 90 catches
04:531122 yards and five touchdowns it is virtually identical okay you have three players
05:01with you add up their production it's almost identical to Wondell's it sounds like John Harbaugh
05:07Joe Shane Donna Ponte were all balling on a budget when it came to their approach to free agency it's
05:14like me when I go clothes shopping Paul like I'm not gonna go to Blinciag I'm not gonna go to
05:19these
05:19expensive stores you know me I'm a Burlington guy I am going into Burlington and I'm going to get
05:25three pieces whether it be the shirt the the blazer and the pants all for the price of that
05:31one shirt or that one pair of shoes that you could get somewhere else and I mean that's just what
05:37John
05:37Harbaugh that's what he walked into he signed guys that he's familiar with he signs guys that his
05:44offense coordinator is familiar with these are these this is I mean it's what he had to do and I
05:50think
05:50that that just showed that he could not only do more with less but at the same time he gets
05:57it he
05:57gets what the situation that he walked into now a lot of people are going to ask with us being
06:04what
06:04exactly a month away from the draft did the Mooney Likely and Austin signings change your mind
06:11into what you think the Giants are going to do with the fifth and 37th picks well I mean I
06:18don't
06:19think they're going to take a wide receiver with a number five pick right now I don't think so because
06:23I don't think that's what their offense is going to be about you know what I mean and you have
06:28you
06:28know Malik neighbors was injured so early last year isn't it right Brandon you almost forget about
06:33him in some ways right yeah it's like oh yeah one of the you know what we think is one
06:39of the top
06:3910 receivers in the league is coming back to the offense he literally played what less than a half
06:44with Jackson Dart this is a new toy and weapon for Jackson Dart so I don't think you know and
06:50and
06:50look the Giants hope maybe after this year or after next year they have to extend Malik neighbors
06:55because he's playing so well now you have a rookie receiver I don't know I think I think the Jeremiah
07:00love running back stuff cannot be discounted um like you know a month ago or maybe before John
07:08Harbaugh was here I would say no they're not taking a running back at number five I don't think you
07:12can
07:12discount it I mean I would put my money more on one of the defensive players who could be available
07:18there you know to Ohio State players you know styles or downs um you know would be like in that
07:25discussion I would think um we'll see you know we still have a month to go and um you know
07:32pro days
07:33uh visits all the Jeremiah love was in the building for a visit by all accounts he's a great kid
07:38um
07:38you know it just seems like yesterday you know I know it's not I know it's 2018 that we were
07:43talking
07:43about Super Saquon and we were putting him on the back page of the New York Post after the combine
07:48in a Superman outfit with you know blue and red and a cape that you know this guy put on
07:53the greatest
07:53show in the history of the combine and then you know well that discussion about you can't take a
07:58wide receiver number two um that was at a time where we didn't know if the Giants had a quarterback
08:03or not right we didn't know yeah they had an old Eli Manning um now we believe the Giants do
08:09have a
08:09quarterback so maybe you can say giving him a tremendous wide running back weapon to an offense
08:18that wants to run the ball and you know what every time Jackson Dart hands off what does that mean
08:23Brandon Jackson Dart's not putting himself in danger right he's handing the ball off to some
08:28stud who is putting himself in danger and probably putting cornerbacks and safeties and maybe a few
08:34linebackers in danger with the way he can attack them so it's fascinating I mean it's fascinating and
08:40with John Harbaugh and and the fact that you know his roster building expertise is new to us um you
08:46know
08:46there's going to be some surprises along the way I would think yeah and I'm with you on that one
08:50Paul like
08:50I'm behind the Jeremiah Love at five because when you if he was to walk in day one on that
08:57team
08:58and let's say you know you're still minus Malik Neighbors as you wait for him to come back from
09:02the injury he would be the most explosive player on that offense he's a guy that we saw at Notre
09:09Dame
09:09take a handoff jump over people and go 50 60 70 yards for the touchdown and if you don't have
09:17that
09:17explosive threat on the perimeter or at tight end likely is explosive but not like you know a
09:23running back of a Jeremiah Love's caliber then you have to you have to get rid of that Saquon PTSD
09:29and realize that the offensive line is going to be in much better shape than what it was back when
09:36they drafted hold on hold on I don't think they've done enough that well they don't have a right guard
09:41right now okay I mean they have guys who can play right guard you know they haven't re-signed Greg
09:46Van Roten yet um so you know they they don't have what I feel is going to end up being
09:51their starting
09:52right guard you know they looked at that market you know uh um Elijah Vera Tucker was a guy they
09:57were
09:57interested in they didn't think the price would get up that high you know what I mean and it's hard
10:01to
10:01give a lot of money to a guy who's injured more often than he's not injured so there would have
10:06to
10:06be a lot of injury you know clauses in there and it did you know I don't think they wanted
10:10Wyatt
10:11Teller you know I would say sign Wyatt Teller from the Browns you know what John Harbaugh saw him play
10:16twice a year against this team yeah right yeah so what does it say that he didn't say we got
10:22to make
10:22a big push to get Wyatt Teller we got to make a big push to get him so I just
10:25think that that before we
10:27start saying oh Jeremiah Lovey get him on the outside they need we've seen this act before right
10:32we've done this dance before with great running backs so there needs to be more work to do and
10:37they don't have to play tomorrow so that's fine but there needs to be more work done on the offensive
10:42line and I would not a hundred percent discount them drafting an offensive lineman at number five
10:48or maybe trading down a pick you know what the guard from Penn State what how do you say it
10:54Ione
10:55how do you say his last name yeah I I need to I need to I know exactly who you're
10:59talking about
11:00but I butchered that name to him a little bit yeah because you know he's getting some Quentin Nelson
11:05vibes yes he is not quite that but you know what so a stud guard with Tyrone Tracy and with
11:15Cam Scadaboo and maybe some motor Singletary and maybe some guy they draft in the third or fourth round
11:21with a stud guard and Jermaine Illuminor and you have you know the left side okay with Runyon and
11:27especially with Andrew Thomas and you know I believe that John Harbaugh kind of likes John Michael
11:32Schmitz you know not as much as he likes Tyler Lindebaum but they were not going to make Tyler
11:37Lindebaum they didn't have the money to make you know pay the highest center you know highest paid center
11:41in NFL history so you know it's all got to fit you know it's all a puzzle here it's got
11:46to fit and
11:47having a great guard is the completely unsexy thing to do you know how about if you can trade down
11:53two
11:53spots and get the best guard in the draft and then get another second round pick I take a running
11:59back
11:59there yeah because you got it's fascinating it's fascinating it's we all it's it's just all it's
12:05like my it's like my March Madness bracket Paul it's all just projection what we think is going to
12:09happen but how are you doing you got all you I'm already out my my bracket's been it's been gone
12:15like I'm never good at at at kind of uh picking brackets which is the same thing no one's ever
12:22that good when it comes to our mock drafts because anything can happen and the reason why I said
12:27you had UMass and William and Mary
12:29I don't know about William and Mary basketball but you UMass basketball they made it definitely made a run
12:36uh this season but I just said that the offensive line was better now or or look better now because
12:42you had Nate Solder as your left tackle as opposed to when Saquon was you know when Saquon when Saquon
12:48is here but that guard from Penn State is making he is getting a lot of buzz and you also
12:53have a
12:53another Notre Dame running back and a Jadarian Price that could fall to one of those second round picks
12:59if they decide to uh you know trade back and get a pick for for that guy so it's it's
13:04all interesting and
13:05we got we got these pro days coming up this week a lot of pro days that a lot of
13:09people should be
13:10keeping their eye out on Paul whose pro days are you uh you kind of dialed in and locked into
13:16as uh
13:16who the Giants could potentially be looking at some of their players well listen to it this week my um
13:22Monday pro day Miami right the offensive tackle right Mayoga he's gonna go high um Monday same day LSU
13:35um cornerback right Mansoor yep right yep one of the best um one of the best um cornerbacks in the
13:42draft
13:42probably the best Tuesday you got Auburn and Cincinnati they have prospects yeah how about
13:46Wednesday how about being a uh a Joe Shane and his his his scouts and everything and you say
13:52giving up where we should go Wednesday Wednesday you have Alabama they've always got a slew Ohio State
13:58you got you got you know the best the best receiver the best safety and prop and the best
14:06you know pure middle linebacker in the draft you know I think if you tell the Giants right now
14:10go to Ohio State and just pick the player you want would you take that I think they would say
14:14yes
14:14without a doubt Friday Arizona State Florida State Mississippi State so um you know Joe Shane's
14:21not going to be spending a lot of nights in his bed this week I'll tell you that much yeah
14:25uh that's
14:26that Arizona State one Friday is going to be one to keep an eye out on because there are reports
14:30that
14:31Jordan Tyson may have suffered some sort of hamstring injury already and this is a dude that
14:35kind of missed out on a lot of football games because of that durability that's the last thing
14:41you want right now when you're projected to be one of the top receivers taken in this draft and you
14:46know
14:46he could he could fall to somebody because of this but at the same day you just think of the
14:52money
14:52that you missed out on uh so the pro days and the facility visits that's the next football related
14:59side of uh of business on the uh on the agenda for these guys Paul but what's the next order
15:04of
15:05business for Joe Shane and John Harbaugh you said they may be speaking at the owners meetings
15:09yeah owners meetings in Phoenix they stay at the Biltmore the famous Biltmore Hotel um I do not stay at
15:16the
15:16famous Biltmore Hotel I do not but the owners and the GMs and the coaches do and uh that um
15:22starts
15:22this Sunday uh in Phoenix where you know I've been there you know every three or four years they always
15:28have it at a good place Orlando or Miami or Phoenix you know or LA you know always at a
15:33warm weather
15:33place and uh you know usually Phoenix it's very nice this time of year and you see it was like
15:37107 last
15:38week in Phoenix wow I think it's supposed to be in the mid 90s or upper 90s this week so
15:42it'll be a warm one uh it's a good thing I spent a lot of my time in the air
15:46-conditioned Biltmore
15:47Hotel with um you know kind of scoping out the scene so yeah uh Joe Shane you know for fans
15:51interested Joe Shane will talk um on Monday coming up uh John Harbaugh will talk on Monday coming up
15:58there's a breakfast with the NFC coaches so we get John Harbaugh so there'll be a lot of information
16:03coming out of the um owners meetings and um those are always um very very fertile for
16:12guys and GMs you know GMs talking to other GMs about possible trades what are you thinking what
16:18are you thinking you know maybe player trades uh you know you're looking to trade up you're looking
16:22to trade down what do you think you know what I mean uh you know a lot of people think
16:26this year a
16:27lot of teams will not want to trade up to number five because there's no quarterback teams usually
16:32want to trade up for quarterbacks but it just takes one team to say we you know Jeremiah love is
16:37the difference between us making a Super Bowl than not we got to trade up to get them you know
16:40how
16:41willing are the Giants to trade down how far they want to trade down things like that so um there'll
16:46be a lot of uh scuttlebutt coming out of uh Phoenix this week uh you know early next week all
16:51right
16:51Paul safe travels out there a lot to look on the Giants plate this week and next week but uh
16:57we're a
16:57month away from the NFL draft and I can't wait for that because then we can start talking about some
17:02football uh Paul I appreciate you hopping on with us and thank you guys for watching another episode
17:07of Blue Rush
17:10you
