00:06Speed kills in the NFL and it changes the way a defense plays the offense and the Giants have
00:12brought in two speedy receivers that I feel like can challenge and threaten the jobs of two other
00:18receivers that they have in the room. Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III were brought in to
00:23compete with Darius Slayton and Jalen Hyatt as the vertical threats in this receiver room.
00:28That's how it is when it comes to football but the key word is compete. Neither one of these dudes
00:33broke the bank and required wide receiver one or even wide receiver two money but both can produce
00:39as a wide receiver two or wide receiver three and have that type of impact. They're low risk with
00:46high upside and that adds to a receiver room that needs and I gotta emphasize needs someone to step
00:53up and be the guy opposite of Malik Nabors. I think Mooney right now has the upper hand because he
00:59spent two seasons in Chicago with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy but you gotta duke it out
01:04and fight it out and make plays in training camp. So in this Blue Rush free agent profile I'm breaking
01:10down what these two dudes could bring to a Matt Nagy ran offense and that is the wheels.
01:19Alright Darnell Moody you are first sir. I will watch him here at the bottom of the screen. You see
01:26we
01:26got heavy personnel a 13 personnel one back three tight ends got one receiver in the game. Let's just watch
01:34it real fast and then we'll go back to it. Two man route here guys. Max protection. You do it
01:41because
01:42you got wheels on the outside. Let's bring it back. Let's talk about it because every team in the NFL
01:48runs this. Every team in college, high school, everybody does this. This is a shot play from the
01:5350 yard line. You run the crosser right here with I believe this is cow pits and then you run
01:59that deep
02:00pulse. What this is going to do is it's going to put this safety in some sort of bind. If
02:06this
02:06safety stays low like he does and jumps the crosser this pulse route now has all this space and you're
02:14not running this route with the 4-6 guy or 4-5 or 4-4. This is 4-3 and
02:21below. This kid put his speed
02:23on the tape on tape on this route and I just want to kind of break it down because this
02:27goes this goes
02:28to show that he knows his speed. He knows how to use his speed as a weapon not only to
02:35run by a
02:36defender but to also set up defenders as well and I'll show you. So right here coming off the ball
02:43head down. He's digging. He's looking. He's trying to put what we call an oh shoot feeling on this
02:50corner. You're trying to get up on this corner as fast as possible. You don't want to break the post
02:55too fast because now this safety comes into play. A lot of the time you get some sort of single
03:00high
03:00safety but because of the the personnel and the formation it's a run formation so this safety is
03:07kind of being I want to say lazy. He's looking to play the run. He's not getting the depth he
03:12needs
03:13to help be a team player and help this corner. So I want you to watch again I talk about
03:18how his
03:18angles pads low. He's digging like the first 20 yards of a 40 yard dash especially first 10 you're
03:25really digging trying to get trying to put your speed on tape and you're trying to gain some ground
03:31but notice he was in a minus two split minus two from the numbers. He was here but he is
03:38now touching
03:39paint and what that does let's say this safety was kind of just running out of there wasn't really
03:44back pedaling out of there. We're taught to chase the to chase the back chase the back pad and what
03:51that does is give us a two-way go on this corner. Two-way go meaning he can run some
03:57sort of bench
03:58route flag route some sort of deep speed out you're anything you want here and I'll show you what I
04:03mean
04:04by that on the very next play but right now they're setting this guy up because they want this like
04:09me at
04:09happy hour. They want to take a shot right now and that's exactly what he does. So he gets on
04:15him
04:15you see him touching paint you see the wide depart you want to touch paint because again that gets you
04:21a little bit of space away from that safety. The safety is now bit the cheese puts his foot in
04:26the
04:26ground and now this is why this kid Darnell Mooney is going to add something to the Giants offense
04:33because you watch look at the speed turns tracks the football doesn't open his shoulders too much
04:40because that slows you down takes a high angle and he allows Kirk Cousins to throw him open
04:48throwing him open meaning you see him he's he's looking up at the ball he's got that oh shoot feeling
04:54I'd have messed up Kirk Cousins the fact that Darnell Mooney didn't flatten it off right away
05:00that safety could have gotten it back into phase and made a play on the on the football. Mooney kept
05:05a high angle and Cousins throws him away from this corner right into his spot touchdown. Giants are
05:14going to need big plays down the field like this and they ran a play similar well it's similar to
05:20this
05:20um during the Saints game Giants Saints 2025 but that post was dropped.
05:28Another way you can attack guys and get the football thrown down the field and use your speed
05:35as a weapon you'll see on this play right here you'll see him right here lined up man he's got
05:41the lineup he lines up like a fast guy like a track guy another wide departure almost looks like he's
05:47going to the post nope deep curl so he sets up the defender you're setting up this the defender
05:53with speed and this is still a 20 yard throwing catch it's still considered a big play throwing
05:59catches down the field or uh any any catch past 20 yards is considered a big play an explosive play
06:07in the passing game so last time he was lined up in that minus two split now he motions over
06:14a little
06:14bit and whether he was in that minus two split or he motioned over to kind of this uh this
06:22this this
06:23close split he still touches paint pretty much touches paint so what does that make a defender think
06:32he still has that two-way go you can still run the post you can run the bench you can
06:38run the flag
06:39you can run a deep speed out but they decide to hook it up and run the curl route here
06:44so using his
06:45speed touch the paint using his speed and i love his body lean i love the way his head's down
06:52it looks
06:53like he's trying to run past this corner and you see this corner like uh-oh mooney's got them wheels
06:59going he's run out of there now when he makes the break watch this separation attack the back pad
07:05attacked the blind spot did exactly what he was supposed to do drops weight puts his foot into the
07:11ground look at the separation on the catch now it's all about coming back to the football coming down
07:17your stem kurt cousins or whoever that quarterback is saw that corner to the inside so he threw it to
07:23the outside a little bit now he's got the catch i wish he would have turned up field he may
07:28have been
07:28able to score there but now you got the catch 20 yards down the field it's a first down it's
07:34a chunk
07:35play and it's a big play down the football field so being able to use his skill set his speed
07:41as a
07:42weapon and as a threat to be able to run multiple routes down the football field rather be deep post
07:49go route but then you can also run the deep flags the benches deep outs or deep curls being able
07:56to put
07:56that speed on tape and using it as a tool is going to create chunk plays for jackson dart in
08:03this
08:03giants passing game mr calvin austin the third you are on the clock sir he's right here on the slot
08:12now i had to go back to the 2024 season you see russell wilson here uh in that quarterback this
08:18was
08:18what this was a close game between the steelers and the giants uh sorry giants defense of 2024
08:24sorry i had to do it to you guys i had to put this on there because we want to
08:28see him line up and
08:29how he can match up against some of his now teammates again this is calvin austin the third
08:34another guy that can get down the football field and get vertical with this speed it can add a
08:41different element and be a different weapon for this giants offense so let's watch the play
08:51get vertical oh high angle moon ball touchdown on the corner out touchdown you want to throw the
08:59football down the field to these guys you have to nfl you can't just have four yards in a cloud
09:07of dust
09:07three yards in a cloud of dust five yard throw here ten yard throw here yeah you want to move
09:12the
09:12chains but when i'm talking about moving the chains you want chunk plays to move the chains
09:17when you can so let's break the route down and here's what i really like about it he goes you've
09:22got a you've got a guy that's that's outside playing outside leverage and you're running this
09:27high angle corner route right a lot of guys that when they run it they attack that outside and then
09:35they just flatten this off but he trusts his speed he trusts russell wilson with the moon ball to take
09:42a
09:42high angle and we'll get into that in a second but this shows that he's got some route savvy to
09:47him
09:48he's got some route discipline to him because look at what he does all right you're ready to capture
09:53this outside right again a lot of guys will just bowl this out but he gets vertical he takes another
10:00two to three steps vertical to reset the corner reset his hips you see these steps in this i guess
10:08the
10:08university of pit they're the college hash lines he gets vertical again
10:15and then he makes his break to the high angle you see that if he would have just bowled this
10:22route
10:22and ran it more like a flag route or bench route that corner could have came in play but he
10:28put his
10:28skill set in play he put his speed on tape takes in high angle and he's gaining separation
10:35on the corner on the corner on the corner and the corner route all you got to do is throw
10:40that moon
10:41ball drop it in there touchdown again it doesn't have to just be a post it doesn't have to be
10:46a go
10:47when you've got guys that can run routes with speed you can threaten the defense that third level you can
10:54take the top off of a defense threaten them with the speed and run some sort of route off of
11:00it to get
11:01the chunk play touchdown this was last year big moment of this football game you got aaron rogers
11:09here john harbaugh you know who this guy is they beat you guys uh to get into the playoffs but
11:16this
11:16was a big a pivotal moment in this football game let's watch the route because this is clean someone
11:24called 911 because i want to report a dead body oh oh oh so easy so easy i'm sorry for
11:36getting so
11:36hype y'all but as a wide receiver you love this stuff this is the stuff when we're in meeting
11:41rooms
11:42after this game when we're in our receiver meeting rooms chewing on our sunflower seeds and you're eating
11:47on your banana laughy taffy y'all are laughing now you're laughing taffy him but you're laughing
11:53at the defender because he just put him in a blender and cooked him no sauce no nothing just
12:00plain oh cooked him all right let's get to the route start to go understanding with all this space
12:09you understanding that this this defender is going to want to jump that he's going to want to try and
12:14be
12:14a hero in this situation and jump that gives them just enough doesn't doesn't buy doesn't uh lose too
12:23much time by too many wasted movements a lot of times you see guys like do too much when it
12:30comes
12:30to these stutter goals gives them just enough for this defender to want to break to want to break on
12:38the
12:38football gave him the cheese made the defender bite the cheese but let's let's i want to go back to
12:44because you don't you don't have to run it like an under you don't have to run it was not
12:48a sluggo
12:49it's not a slant and go it's just a stutter and go but that violent movement the drop hips and
12:55the
12:55violent movement here drop weight gave a little gave a little something with the helmet to make him think
13:03that all right quick throw balls coming out let me jump this route uh-uh and you know you're not
13:09going
13:09to get good footing in pittsburgh touchdown again i don't know if calvin uh austin the third is going
13:16to be a two option will he be a three don't know we we don't know just yet when it
13:21comes to these guys
13:22because they're going to have to compete but again it's always it's a great thing for darnell mooney
13:27that he knows and has been in a matt nagy system has had one of his best years as a
13:33had his career
13:34year under matt nagy and then with a john harbaugh playing the pittsburgh steelers twice a year when
13:41he was in baltimore he knows who's who this kid is in terms of a calvin ritley the third knows
13:47the
13:47speed what his skill set is these are going to be two guys that can step in right away pick
13:53up this
13:54playbook and add value to the giants offense you see it speed speed speed speed speed kills plus
14:03these guys catch the football both of these guys have made plays in the nfl already and they've been
14:09wide receiver twos and weapons before in their career when you look at mooney he's got a total of
14:14309 receptions for a little over 4 000 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career and he has familiarity with
14:22the matt nagy system austin's numbers don't really compare 84 catches for 1100 yards and eight touchdowns
14:30but you can he adds value in the special teams aspect of the game as well when you look at
14:36the
14:37little bit of money that the giants had on the cap and the guys that they had already signed these
14:43dudes
14:43are some really good value signings their deals allow the giants to stay aggressive in signing or even
14:51drafting someone in the trish's specifically o-line or d-line and if one of these guys hit and mooney
14:58or austin the third meaning you can get some sort of really solid production out of them that is a
15:04huge
15:05value for a low contract i also think that it keeps notre dame running back jeremiah love in play to
15:12be
15:12drafted fifth overall and then they draft a wide receiver or a corner with the 37th pick or maybe even
15:19in a later round or since you know there's so many sunny styles at number five fans out there they
15:25grab styles at five and then they get a cornerback that they really like at 37 or they just get
15:31aggressive and trade back into the first four corner either way the giants just added two catch-and-run
15:38vertical threats to an offense that needs to be dangerous in 2026.
