00:05Giants players haven't even reported officially for offseason workouts and we get a chance to
00:11deal with some reports. R. Paul Schwartz has confirmed the report that Dexter Lawrence
00:17has requested a trade. The Giants haven't officially said anything about it, but we
00:23get to talk about it. We being our NFL reporter for The Post, Ryan Dunleavy. Ryan, a lot to
00:29deal with before the players can even check if their key cards work, but from what you've
00:34heard or what you've been hearing, is there anything worth retweeting for with this info
00:39just yet? Yeah, this is about show me the money, Brandon, the old NFL. Dexter Lawrence is the
00:4711th highest paid defensive tackle now. Obviously, any coach in the NFL will tell you he's the
00:52best nose tackle in the NFL. Maybe some will tell you two or three. No one's telling you
00:5711th. He wants to be paid for the player that he is. It's a sticky situation because the
01:03Giants didn't pay him last year coming off a great season. They gave him, you know, kind
01:09of keep quiet incentives that he didn't reach because he had a bad season playing hurt. And
01:16now he's seen his three best buddies, Saquon, Dexter Lawrence, Saquon, Leonard Williams, and
01:21Julian Love win the Super Bowl with other teams while he keeps taking a beating inside and losing
01:27games. So his frustrations are there and he's going to use the leverage of not coming to
01:34voluntary workouts and showing the Giants how bad their defensive tackle depth chart is while
01:39he waits to see if they're willing to up their offer.
01:41All right. When you talk about the leverage game and the business side of things, let's say
01:45the Giants play the leverage card in the sense of coming off of one of your worst seasons as
01:51a pro. So what would that mean in terms of like, like for Harbaugh, Joe Shane and those
01:57guys, what would like, like some sort of number look like to make decks or want to sign some
02:02sort of extension to stay on and make everybody happy?
02:06I would say that he's got to get up. I mean, they have 25, 26, uh, something million dollars.
02:12I mean, maybe more than that, obviously, uh, per year. I I'd have to look at the numbers. Like
02:17I said, he's 11th. I would think he's got to get into the top five, maybe the top three, uh,
02:22depends how aggressive he wants to be. Look, I've talked to Dexter Lawrence enough about this. Like
02:26he wants to play in New York. He dreams of being in the Giants ring of honor, but he also
02:31wants
02:31to win and he also, uh, wants to be paid fairly. So this is a situation that's happened a lot
02:37under
02:38Joe Shane. It has, it's happened to a lot of the Giants best players. Uh, they don't always, uh,
02:43take, they don't always take care of contracts proactively. In fact, they do it, um, reactively
02:50quite often. So, uh, this is a problem of their own making because they don't have an alternative
02:57in the depth chart. They haven't taken care of him when he was, uh, performing like one
03:02of the best players. Half a sack is not the time to ask for a raise, but Dexter Lawrence
03:07will tell you, he still gets double teamed 75% of the time in the trenches. Um, so he is
03:15going to ask for it now. And, uh, we're going to see with three weeks in draft, if it was
03:20after the draft, it'd be like, well, the Giants are just going to wait out Dexter Lawrence and
03:24see if he comes to training camp, but three weeks before the draft, the team that doesn't
03:27have a lot of draft picks. What if somebody gives them a Quinn and Williams package, Brandon?
03:32What if somebody says, we'll give you two first round picks. That'd be hard for the Giants to
03:35turn down. Well, when you think about what, like you've been on every zoom call, every
03:39Harbaugh availability since he was hired, does this kind of with what he said about Dexter
03:45Lawrence, does he line up with his vision, his culture in terms of the Harbaugh era?
03:52Yeah. I think D I think he sees him. What did he call him? Uh, not even a cornerstone.
03:57He called him a middle stone or something like that. Cause of the way he plays in the, in
04:01the, in the middle of the trenches. Yeah. Harbaugh wants Dexter Lawrence on the team. This
04:05is a good test for Harbaugh and Donna Ponte, the negotiator. Uh, I think the Giants and Harbaugh
04:12have been Giants and Dexter Lawrence have been trying to find a good contract basis for a couple
04:16years now, and it hasn't quite worked out. And I think Dexter's patience is running thin. Uh, so,
04:24um, yeah, I think that, uh, this is a player that Harbaugh is going to want. And if they end
04:31up
04:31trading him, that's the fans are going to point to Joe Shane, not John Harbaugh and say, why couldn't
04:36you get this done with Saquon? Why couldn't you get this done with love? Why couldn't you get this
04:41done with why do all our best players end up leaving and going somewhere else? Well, lastly,
04:47you had mentioned the Giants may be, you know, getting a, a Quentin Williams type package for
04:53Dexter Lawrence. Do you think that he has that value out there on the market? I texted one person.
04:59He said he's a better player than Quentin Williams. So like, yeah, he didn't have a great year,
05:03uh, but he's a better player. So if that's the market that some team's going to use now,
05:09some teams might say, Hey, look, the Cowboys were desperate. They traded Michael Parsons.
05:13That's not fair value, but the most recent comp is going to tell you he should get two first round
05:18picks. Maybe they get a first and a second. If they're willing to trade them. I don't think
05:21they really want to trade them. I think they'll probably both sides. They'll probably get something
05:25done here. I don't, I wouldn't say the door is closed on the Giants and Dexter Lawrence,
05:29but the door is closing because it's going to need to be resolved before the draft on April 23rd.
05:36All right. Well, John Harbaugh has a 1 PM zoom on Tuesday for the official start of
05:43off season workouts. Ryan Dunleavy is going to be on that zoom for sure. Uh, Ryan, I appreciate you
05:48hopping on with us, man. Thanks, Brian.
