Should Patriots pivot to George Pickens?
Transcript
00:00JSN getting a bag, a bag and an additional bag.
00:05That is correct.
00:06Seahawks wide receiver Jackson Smith and Jigba has gotten a four-year,
00:11$168 million contract extension with $120 million of that guaranteed.
00:16Once Gonzo get his, now I know he's got to be chomping at the bit,
00:20knowing that not that it's a wide, they're different positions,
00:24but they both been in the league the same amount of time.
00:27Yeah. So guaranteed money, that's $30 million a year, Shyam?
00:33Is that what you just said?
00:34So yeah, so if you do it over the four years, it's $30 million,
00:36but more than likely, I assume it'll be front-loaded.
00:38So it's more like a three-year, $120 million contract, which is $40 million a year.
00:43Because when he gets to that third year, he'll end up either doing an extension,
00:48which would then eliminate the fourth year and what that was and get new money,
00:53or if he wants, then maybe he just, because I think the total is what, $168, Shyam?
00:58Correct.
00:59So then he would be like, oh, I'm going to play my fourth year and then become a free agent.
01:03But most people will restructure.
01:05If it's a four-year deal, most people will extend after their third year.
01:09And you know what's interesting?
01:10The Seahawks now find themselves in cap jail.
01:13That's some good money.
01:15Well, they let Walker walk, right?
01:18Yep.
01:18He went to Kansas City.
01:21Boye Mafé, I believe.
01:23I forget where he signed, but I know he left in free agency as well.
01:26The defensive end?
01:28Defensive, yeah.
01:28Yeah, the edge guy.
01:30I forget where he went.
01:30Did he go to the – no, he didn't go to Tampa, did he?
01:34Okay.
01:35But, yeah, but it just goes to – now you just like –
01:38Cincinnati.
01:38Oh, Cincinnati.
01:39Now you just wait because that's generally what happens.
01:41Like, after their third year and their rookie deal, they want that new money.
01:45Like, so it's Christian this year.
01:47Next year it's going to be Drake.
01:49That's a ton of money.
01:50For a wide receiver?
01:51Yes.
01:52But that's what the market is.
01:53You don't think he says – you know, if he feels he's the best wide receiver in the game,
01:58he's going to say, I believe the highest pay before him was Justin Jefferson, correct?
02:03Or was it Jamar Chase?
02:04Jamar Chase has 161.
02:06Okay, so one of those two guys.
02:08So, Jamar Chase.
02:09He's going to say, I want more than what he got.
02:13Just like Gonzalez.
02:13Gonzalez is going to say, I want 100-plus million because 100 million is what Trent McDuffie got, guaranteed.
02:23Gonzalez is going to say, I'm the better player.
02:27I want 105.
02:28The Patriots would have signed him in a sign-in trade if not for the 7 million they had to
02:32pay to ensure the safety of the FIFA events.
02:37It's just – there is no cap.
02:39Just stop talking about it.
02:40It is so irrelevant.
02:41You have money.
02:42You can spend it – not only is there no cap, every year the revenue increases 10% to 15%,
02:47which means a deal for $100 today is $90 next year.
02:52Like, it's not – the Seahawks did that because they have money to burn and they recognize his importance to
02:59the team.
02:59And they're going to be more NBA-like, as Wiggy has alluded to, front-load them.
03:04The cap is spread out over the – I mean, the cap hit is spread out over the course of
03:08five years with a signing bonus.
03:10And what you spend at the beginning is nowhere near the same impact on the cap at the end.
03:14Like, also, I can only imagine how much Puka Nakua is loving this because he's been better than JSN for
03:21two years.
03:22Right.
03:22And he is going to get absolutely paid.
03:25Because next year is going to be his third year, right?
03:27Correct.
03:27And he was a middle-round guy, so his contract's only the four years.
03:30Yep.
03:30So, like, you have to sign him ASAP.
03:33Yep.
03:33When it comes to the Patriots, I just feel differently about paying wide receivers.
03:38Like, I –
03:39You don't like it?
03:40No.
03:40I would love for them to have a receiver where they'd be in a position that they have to worry
03:44about a contract with this.
03:46And that's why, like, I've argued with some other people in the market about what they should give up for
03:52somebody like A.J. Brown or A.J. Brown and the risk there.
03:55And everybody around here, like, that doesn't want a trade like A.J. Brown.
04:00They act like you have a 1,000-yard receiver every season.
04:04Well, you did have one.
04:05You did, and you let him go.
04:06And they look pretty good catching that ball from Tom Brady on Saturday.
04:09Well, let me ask you this.
04:10Or that you just find them in the draft like you don't.
04:13To be fair, Brady makes everybody look good.
04:14Let me ask you this, the A.J. Brown situation.
04:17Would you go George Pickens because he's younger?
04:25Would you go with him over A.J. Brown if you had to trade for one of them?
04:31Because I think, you know, you'd be still trading a first-round draft pick.
04:34I might lean towards George Pickens.
04:37I like George Pickens, but he's a head case.
04:40Are you worried about the knee thing now?
04:41A little bit about the knee, but he's just older.
04:43I believe Pickens is, what, 25 years old or something, 20, somewhere in that range.
04:49So she's younger.
04:51He's, you look.
04:52Pickens is 25.
04:5225, you look what happened when he got a really, really good quarterback in Dak Prescott,
04:57and he was the main guy for a good portion of that season.
05:00I mean, I would still take A.J. Brown, but I'm just saying, based on, you know, age, health,
05:07would you be willing to take those same draft picks and say, okay, Dallas.
05:13If that, but he's happy in Dallas.
05:15Right, but is Dallas going to give him, because he's got to be loving this too,
05:20if you're George Pickens, he's got to be loving this.
05:23But they've already paid C.D. Lamb, so I guess maybe, you know, maybe it might be a little bit
05:28easier
05:28for them to trade George Pickens because they do have C.D.
05:30I'm just, I feel so much more open to spending on a receiver because it is, seems to be a
05:38difficult,
05:38difficult, yeah, trade, spend the money, like, even if he's not perfect for you,
05:44it's so hard for you to come by these guys.
05:47And I think having somebody who was very obviously flawed with how they were coming in last year
05:51and Stephon Diggs, it worked out really well for you.
05:54You can talk about the playoffs, but he had over 1,000 yards and he was coming off an ACL
05:59surgery in his 30s.
06:00Wiggy, I know George Pickens' skill set lines up really well with, like, how Drake May plays quarterback,
06:05but would you pay a guy who historically has been a bit of a head case like that?
06:11I would because of my head coach.
06:14I feel like Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels would be able to get George Pickens on where he needs to
06:21be.
06:22And I think maybe what might help, what obviously helped George Pickens, in my opinion,
06:27is he is the guy, or he was the guy in Dallas.
06:31They threw him the ball a lot.
06:33Pittsburgh, he felt like he wasn't being utilized where he needed to be.
06:36And I feel like if he came here, he would be the guy, right?
06:40So they would get him the ball.
06:41They would utilize him.
06:42You have a head coach that has built the culture, and I think you would get a guy that would
06:47buy in.
06:47And then, obviously, he would be getting his money, so he'd be happy about that.
06:50He makes some of the most unbelievable acrobatic catches I've ever seen in my life.
06:55Yeah, he go gets it.
06:57How we say he goes and high points those footballs, and that fits right into Drake May's wheelhouse.
07:03I mean, he's got speed.
07:05He can play on the outside.
07:07He can high point.
07:08The athleticism is off the charts.
07:09He's jumping over guys in the open field.
07:12He's run after catch.
07:13So that's why I said maybe you get a younger version, and you're giving up draft pick.
