00:00And let's start there with what is going on in the world of Kalshi and prediction markets.
00:07Daniel Wallach, who is, of course, noted on social media for his work in the legal world,
00:13an update on the Nevada Gaming Control Board Civil Enforcement Action versus Kalshi.
00:18As you see on your screen, Nevada's federal courts remands Nevada's GCB's Civil Enforcement Action versus Kalshi
00:26back to state court, where Kalshi faces an imminent temporary restraining order,
00:32barring it from offering event contracts in Nevada.
00:36Now, what could be next, obviously, remains to be seen.
00:39In a separate order, though, Judge Du also remanded Nevada's Civil Enforcement Action versus Polymarket
00:46back to the same state court, which previously issued a TRO against the company.
00:51Judge Du directed Polymarket's claim that it was acting as a, quote,
00:55federal officer when it removed the case.
00:58So these are some of the things, obviously, that we are watching here.
01:01But as you were just looking at, Polymarket filing an emergency motion with the Nevada federal court as well.
01:08Basically, in summing all of this up here, the court ruling now raises risk of Kalshi being at a trading
01:15halt in Nevada.
01:16And we know prediction markets really sweeping the nation, not only in terms of just people taking part,
01:23but obviously programming around it.
01:26You see it here on SportsGrid as well.
01:28This could start a trend on Kalshi lawsuits with other state governments by undercutting its claim of irreparable harm tied
01:35to geofencing.
01:36Because of the ruling Kalshi is weighing in on emergency appeal, Polymarket has sought a stay as both cases returned
01:43to state court.
01:44The court found that the Nevada Gaming Control Board's claims, quote,
01:48arise under state law and that the Commodity Exchange Act does not completely preempt those claims.
01:55Now, if Nevada secures an injunctive relief, it could temporarily bar Kalshi in the state of Nevada.
02:02Now, that's jumping ahead. We'll see, obviously, how all of this plays out.
02:05As we know, tends to be slow moving in the courts, the legal process surrounding all of it.
02:11But there is no question from fantasy, obviously, season long and all of that, to DFS, to best ball,
02:17growing into legalized sports betting, to now the prediction markets.
02:21It's always just the next wave of what is here, what's to come, and where all of the attention goes.
02:26As we have seen companies laying off a lot of people in the sports betting world and companies that are
02:31adjacent to that,
02:32that are surrounding, basically, any markets that are not related to prediction markets
02:38and really focusing their attention into that next wave of content as well.
02:42So, the legalization of it goes a long way toward making all of that possible as well.
02:47Remains to be seen and something that we will continue to talk on here extensively on Newswire in the days
02:53and weeks to come.
02:54Now, we spent a lot of time, obviously, in the last, well, recent years, anyway,
03:00surrounding NIL and players getting paid for name, image, and likeness.
03:04And only a matter of time before the institutions themselves decide to jump in and say,
03:09wait a minute, we were making all this money.
03:11Now, the players themselves are making money.
03:13We want more money.
03:14Rutgers, the latest school to create a for-profit for its athletic department,
03:19the Scarlet Knights Enterprises Incorporated, will lead multimedia rights,
03:23corporate partnerships, ticketing strategy, and NIL initiatives.
03:28Oliver Luck, if that sounds familiar, of course, the father of Andrew Luck,
03:32will be the chairman of the board of directors.
03:35So, again, another thing that you have to imagine more and more,
03:39especially high-profile schools, are going to jump in and try and make more money off the backs
03:44of some of the college students, student-athletes that are making some of their money on the way
03:49out the door to turning pro, potentially, in whatever league sport it is.
03:54The NFL, as we know, and as mentioned, free agency right around the corner,
03:58should be a lot of movement across the lead.
04:00There are all sorts of rumblings and trade rumors and fun things to watch for.
04:04But one of the big questions is, which of the high-profile players, like George Pickens,
04:09for instance, franchised by Dallas, are going to stay put with where they are?
04:13Well, we found out about a couple of them.
04:16Daniel Jones is on track for Week 1, and most assume, while we don't know for certain,
04:22that that's going to be with Indianapolis.
04:24Many are expecting that he is going to get franchise-tagged by the Colts.
04:28Missed a lot of time as that team's season absolutely fell apart in the latter half of last year,
04:33as we know, when they went to different quarterbacks along the way
04:36and could not pick up a win, really, at all, over the course of the final half of that season.
04:41But Daniel Jones, before that, was turning in.
04:44Comeback Player of the Year-worthy performance was, you know, had the Colts in a spot
04:50to potentially even win the AFC, at least in the regular season, if not overall, for the playoffs.
04:55And then, again, everything imploded with that injury and the offense falling apart
05:00around Philip Rivers and others that stepped in.
05:02And Riley Leonard, to name another.
05:04But the expectation is Daniel Jones will be franchised by the Colts.
05:08What's that mean for someone like an Alec Pierce?
05:11Well, the wide receiver could test free agency.
05:13Obviously, we will watch for that.
05:14But Jones, like Patrick Mahomes with Kansas City, like a Michael Penix Jr.,
05:19obviously, with Atlanta.
05:20These quarterbacks had suffered late-season injuries, and we sit and we wonder,
05:23what is their timetable to return?
05:25It's looking like Jones should be ready for Week 1.
05:28According to multiple reports, he is on track.
05:31That would be nine months removed from suffering that right-torn Achilles tendon.
05:35Pete Schrager reports the Vikings could look to sign Jones in free agency if he is not franchise-tagged.
05:41Remember, he was briefly with Minnesota after leaving the Giants,
05:45though he did not actually play for the team.
05:47But that would be another interesting fit for a team that is certainly feeling the pressure
05:51of what to do at QB with J.J. McCarthy, underwhelming and underperforming.
05:57Now, the Jets have decided to bring back Brees Hall, which is no great surprise.
06:02And, of course, one of the premier running back free agents available if he were to hit free agency,
06:08but he's not going to.
06:09Franchise tag on Hall, one year, just more than $14 million, fully guaranteed,
06:14making Hall a top-four paid running back in the NFL.
06:17He tweeted, always been the type to bet on myself, been working, see y'all soon, love.
06:23I just think this is interesting.
06:25He's 24, sure, he's just still entering his prime years,
06:28but this is also maybe the most high-profile, least accomplished running back in the NFL right now.
06:36He's never been a pro bowler, never been an all-pro, never won anything,
06:40only has 1,000-yard rushing season, digging into the numbers here,
06:44and that was obviously last year on the heels of that career year.
06:47Generally healthy, other than that rookie year, he just does not put up big numbers.
06:51You can point to the organization and say, it's absolutely terrible,
06:55and he's not utilized the right way, and what do you have blocking in front of him,
06:59and all these things.
06:59That would be partially fair, but, again, let's remember,
07:03this is a guy that's not exactly due huge, huge dollars based on performance on the field.
07:09Going to the world of college basketball, Duke and NC State.
07:13Cam Boozer, who is expected to be a top-three pick in the upcoming NBA draft.
07:17Number one, Duke taking care of NC State handedly, 93-64.
07:22You see some of the facts and figures there.
07:24Boozer, 26 points, went for nine rebounds, a few assists.
07:28Duke securing the ACC's regular season title with the win.
07:32Here from Boozer.
07:35It was some point in the second half, one of their big men, and, you know,
07:40just the Wolfpack got me, you know.
07:43They got long claws, so.
07:47But, yeah, I mean, I think it just goes to our fight, the toughness we brought to this game.
07:51Part of our guys, like Coach said, went to the ACL right, so it was a big time for a
07:56team for sure.
07:57Iowa State and Arizona, meanwhile, number two Arizona clinching the Big 12 regular season title, 73-57 win over number
08:05six Iowa State.
08:07Duke is the number one still on the AP's top 25, no shock there.
08:12Duke at 27-2 ahead of Arizona at 27-2 as well.
08:17And then you have Michigan, UConn, Florida to round out top five.
08:20You can still get some decent odds on UConn, who has won a couple of recent championships to go back
08:25and do it again,
08:26obviously still in the vicinity of 15-20-1.
08:29Much more on the way on Newswire State, too.
08:33Back here on Newswire, joined by the first guest of the program, Dustin Gauker, on Twitter,
08:38at Dustin Gauker from Event Horizon.
08:40Dustin, it's good to see you.
08:42Yeah, as always.
08:45Absolutely.
08:45So I know we're going to get into a few different things within the prediction market space.
08:49We began the show talking about prediction markets and just what's going on in Nevada as it relates to Kalshi.
08:54But there's no question, I mean, this has to be a gigantic month in the prediction market space with March
09:00Madness right around the corner
09:02and even before that, conference tournaments.
09:04What are the expectations?
09:06Yeah, huge.
09:08Last year, as Kalshi was just getting started with its sports event contracts on sports,
09:13it was doing a huge amount of betting and trading on March Madness last year.
09:18Something like half a billion dollars across the tournament last year.
09:23And, again, they had just started out.
09:25They kind of ramped up this football season.
09:27Now college basketball is the biggest thing that people trade on at Kalshi.
09:32It is something like 20% of all volume is trading on men's college basketball games and point spreads and
09:38totals.
09:39So we, you know, I'm not sure I can put a number on it, but there is going to be,
09:44like, billions,
09:45bit billions in trading on March Madness.
09:48I might even be low.
09:49So this is, you know, I can't understand how big this is for them.
09:53We're coming off football season, you know, Super Bowl, hundreds of millions was traded on that,
09:58and the halftime show and everything around the game.
10:00You know, Kalshi's been, like, kind of treading water here and maybe even growing in the wake of that.
10:05Lots of people are transitioning to basketball trading and betting.
10:08And so we're going to see, yeah, like, conference tournaments coming up.
10:12There's lots of games, lots of televised games.
10:14So, yeah, we expect just a huge month here for Kalshi and everybody else that's in the prediction market space.
10:23Something you've written about, and I just, I find it really interesting, and it's not surprising necessarily,
10:27but I just don't think it's something a lot of people thinking about, is the smaller games but big dollars
10:32attached to them.
10:33For instance, obviously, A&T and Hampton.
10:37This game took place about a month ago at this point, about three weeks ago anyway.
10:42$9.2 million in Moneyline volume.
10:4516th biggest game by volume in the trailing 30 days.
10:48Towson Monmouth, a game that happened a couple days after that.
10:518.3 million.
10:53Why is there so much attention on games like this as opposed to the Duke-NC states of the world?
11:01Look, there is a lot of trading on those, too.
11:03Like, the big national televised games, you know, top teams in the top five, top ten, you know, those are
11:08still big games.
11:09There's, you know, sometimes more than 20 million, 30 million that can be traded on those games.
11:13But it's like we don't really get this kind of granular data at the sportsbooks, like what people are betting
11:18on specifically,
11:19and we see that at the brinkshire market.
11:20So it's fascinating to me that we see – we have these two Coastal Athletic Association games that were really
11:25kind of big.
11:26They were weird times.
11:27It was over the NBA All-Star break.
11:30So they were at these times when there weren't a whole lot of other games going on.
11:32They were also nationally televised.
11:34They were really close games.
11:35But to see almost $10 million traded on these, you know, basically 500 teams in the CAA was kind of
11:42eye-opening to me.
11:44You know, I also understand it to be more than what's happening at sportsbooks in terms of these smaller college
11:49games.
11:49So, you know, are there sharps betting on this?
11:51Are there market makers betting on this?
11:53I don't know.
11:53So there is reason to believe there should have been more activity just based on when the games were and
11:59when they were played.
12:00But, you know, it's just super fascinating to see these literal schools and, like, $10 million.
12:05That's a lot of money being bet on some pretty – you know, some mid-major basketball games.
12:10Dustin, we famously say doing what we do, hey, you can bet on anything.
12:15And I think people know that, and they usually equate it to, well, you can bet on these award shows
12:21and which movie is going to win Best Picture and that type of thing.
12:25People probably don't think about trading on Iran, for instance, and some of what is going on over there.
12:32What have you seen here in terms of the money that is changing hands and the controversy that's happening?
12:38Yeah, we can do a whole show just on this.
12:40This is a fascinating topic that you could bet slash trade on all sorts of things related to Iran.
12:46On Polymarket, which is an international site that doesn't technically serve the U.S., you could bet on whether there
12:51would be airstrikes.
12:51Obviously, there were on Saturday.
12:54You could bet on whether Ali Khan-Hammadi would be out as the supreme leader of Iran.
13:00Obviously, he was hit in an airstrike.
13:03And there was just a whole lot of people, like, waking up to the fact that you could do this.
13:07There was half a billion dollars traded on these markets at Polymarket, far less at Calci because they're a U
13:13.S.-regulated prediction market.
13:15They're not supposed to technically have markets on death and assassination and war, but they still had a market about
13:21whether he would be out as leader, whether Hammadi would be ousted.
13:24But it wouldn't resolve as yes if he died, which is a very weird market to have.
13:30So, like, we have that.
13:33We also have people, probably insider traders, on Polymarket betting right before the airstrikes half and right before Albany was
13:39killed, betting into the markets and winning millions of dollars.
13:43When you hear the prediction markets are the Wild West, this is why, because we're seeing all this happen in
13:48real time.
13:48And people are learning, yeah, okay, cool, we can bet on sports.
13:51That's, like, we like to bet.
13:52I like to bet on sports.
13:53That's cool.
13:53But, like, should we be betting on war?
13:55And should we be betting on people dying?
13:59And, you know, it's where people get a little icky about all this stuff, right?
14:02Should, you know, people are saying, on one side, prediction market evangelists say, this is great because we get more
14:07information about the world.
14:08How likely is it that people are going to, like, is there going to be war in the Middle East,
14:11which is, granted, an interesting thing to know.
14:13But that takes letting people bet on it in turn, and people just don't like that.
14:18We've seen a lot of senators and congresspeople, like, saying out loud, we don't like this and we think it
14:23should be stopped.
14:24It's not clear that it will, but for now, yeah, there's betting on Iran, and now you can bet on
14:29things after the strikes, how long the conflict will last, how long the prediction markets.
14:39Dustin, you know, we only have about a minute, but to that end, there will always be coalitions, obviously, that
14:44are leading the charge against gambling, against prediction markets, calling them the same, and people having to explain what the
14:50divide is, all of it.
14:51Where are we heading here?
14:53We are heading toward more politicians wanting to get involved with this.
14:58Just in the past week, we have seen so many members of Congress talking about this and doing all this.
15:02The question is, will there be a law based on all this, or will Congress try to rein in betting
15:08on Iran?
15:08Will they try to rein in betting on sports?
15:11We don't know.
15:11But we see we have a pretty former Trump chief of staff who is leading a coalition that is against
15:16it called Gambling is Not Investing, saying we shouldn't have sports betting contracts in our prediction markets.
15:22And whether they get any traction, who knows, but there is way more noise and signal about what's going on
15:30in Congress and how prediction markets, what should they be doing?
15:34What should we be allowed?
15:35Should they be regulated more?
15:36Should they have more rules?
15:37We're going to start seeing more people calling for that as time goes on here in the next several weeks
15:41and months.
15:43Dustin Gauker, once again on Twitter at that very same name and from Event Horizon, joins us every Tuesday right
15:49here on Newswire.
15:50Dustin, thank you so much for chatting again.
15:54Our thanks again to Dustin Gauker.
15:56Interesting stuff on prediction markets and what is going on with Calci.
15:59We have much more coming up in the second half of the show.
16:01We will get into some college basketball, some NBA, maybe a little bit of World Baseball Classic if we have
16:08time as well.
16:08But let's go to the NBA, and obviously there's some interesting news more to come in the NFL as well
16:14that we'll get into with Jacob Kameker shortly.
16:16But as you see there, some of the headlines from last night, short slate, the Celtics go out, improve to
16:2241-20, all of this, of course, without Jason Tatum.
16:25But not only that, 6-1 without Jalen Brown.
16:29He sat out, as did Nimi Keita, coming off a damn near 30-20 game in the blowout of the
16:36Nets in the previous contest.
16:38And even still, despite the return to the lineup of Giannis Antetokounmpo from his injury, the Celtics blew doors in
16:45Milwaukee.
16:46108-81, a game that honestly didn't even feel that close by the end.
16:52And Giannis, after 15 games out with his right calf strain, last played back on January 23rd.
16:58It had been a minute.
16:59He was on a minutes restriction, didn't matter.
17:01He still performed 19 points, 11 rebounds in just 25 minutes.
17:05But Ugo Gonzalez was a monster, went for 15-15 or thereabouts anyway.
17:10Derek White, almost 20 points.
17:11Peyton Pritchard, 25 off the bench.
17:13How in the world, Joe Mazzula, the Celtics head coach, is still sitting second in the coach of the year,
17:19balloting or voting in terms of the odds, I have no idea.
17:23If not now, when, for Joe Mazzula of the Celtics.
17:27And I say that, honestly, without an admitted Celtics bias.
17:30This Celtics team, again, no Tatum.
17:34Brown has missed some time.
17:36They've had some pretty good injury luck as compared to other organizations.
17:38But that off-season turnaround of ducking various tax penalties and moving on from Porzingis,
17:45Drew Holiday, Horford, Cornett, and a whole bunch of young, inexpensive players taking them to this point
17:52where they are, again, 41-20 is absolutely remarkable.
17:55I'm not saying Jalen Brown's MVP, but Joe Mazzula, absolutely the coach of the year.
18:01Giannis Antetokounmpo, though, on returning to the lineup for a team that is absolutely fledgling at this stage.
18:06I feel good. I feel a little bit rusty.
18:12But always something new in my career.
18:16Being out for such a long time, and not just one time, multiple times into a season,
18:26it definitely disrupts my rhythm.
18:28But at the end of the day, I just try to take it day by day, game by game.
18:33I'm happy that I'm back.
18:37And I'm just happy that I'm on the court.
18:39Like, it doesn't matter if I play 18, 20 minutes, 22, whatever.
18:42I'm just happy that I'm out there.
18:44I'm just in that, like, mindset that I try not to take nothing for granted.
18:50Obviously, did not play well tonight.
18:53But at the end of the day, I'm just happy that I'm out there.
18:56Being able to, you know, help my teammates in any way that I can
18:59and just do what I love, which is play basketball.
19:03All right, so Giannis back, but for how long, we'll see.
19:06Because it's not even feeling like the Bucs are going to be a play-in tournament team,
19:10let alone a playoff team.
19:11And honestly, not that I'm necessarily a proponent of tanking,
19:15but at a certain point, you need to look in the mirror and realize who are you,
19:18what are you, what's your ceiling, and whether you'd be better off just getting into the lottery
19:22and hoping the ping-pong balls bounce your way.
19:24And that is very much where the Bucs are right now.
19:26Never mind the fact they have a superstar who may want out come this offseason anyway
19:32after months and months and months of will-he-won't-he
19:34in terms of his commitment to the organization.
19:36Denver and Utah.
19:38It wasn't the Nikola Jokic show, not that he was bad.
19:41It was Jamal Murray.
19:4245 points.
19:44Nugs to a late comeback win over the Jazz.
19:46The awful, awful tanking Jazz.
19:49128-125.
19:50Murray was exceptional.
19:528 of 12 from 3 in particular.
19:54Houston and Washington, meanwhile, the Rockets escape D.C.
19:58and Kevin Durant with a homecoming there.
20:00123-118.
20:01Durant goes for 30-7.
20:04Alperin Chang-Goon, 32-13.
20:06He was excellent.
20:07Trey Young was supposed to make his Washington debut in this game,
20:11but before he could, ran onto the floor when there was basically a complaint of the refs.
20:18There was an incident on the court, and he ran out onto the floor to complain and interject,
20:24as you can see, and, you know, did not play, obviously, in this one.
20:28And so what's to come still for him?
20:31We will see maybe the next time out.
20:32In theory, he is going to play on Thursday, a couple days from now, against the Jazz at home.
20:38Again, he was traded from the Hawks to the Wizards back on January 7th,
20:43has been out of action since late December, just after Christmas.
20:46MCL and quad injuries in the right leg.
20:49Young quietly averaging just south of 20 and 9 assists in his 10 games this year.
20:55But the Hawks, they couldn't figure it out with him for years.
20:58Well, the Wizards, I have my doubt.
