00:00but we begin as i mentioned in the nba last night arguably one of the best games we've seen from
00:05donovan mitchell over the course of his career and last night was a big night to come through
00:0843 points including a 39 point second half for mitchell 112 to 102 the calves do beat the
00:18pistons as three and a half point favorites they end up winning by 10 so now the calves are six
00:23and oh this home uh at home in the playoffs at oh and five on the road it's been exactly
00:29that
00:30a tale of two different locations and two different results for the cleveland cavaliers but
00:35if it ain't broke don't fix it and certainly mitchell isn't going to try to fix anything on
00:39his historic second half here he was post game airball the first layup this is shot short
00:45sometimes it's natural right but to james's point you know not really trying to force it i didn't
00:50really you know you got in the paint tried to find guys right i wasn't really trying to get in
00:54there
00:54and force it and then just doubling down on the defensive end trying to you know take whoever
00:58i'm guarding take them out of the you know the equation i understand that i'm going to get looks
01:02and it's going to fall at some point even if they didn't right just being aggressive more aggressive
01:06but um i wasn't i'm not sure we were down four at half like you know what i mean so
01:10understanding that
01:11i always tell you it's not just about the scoring it's about your overall impact on the game and
01:16um for me it was just like okay now i have an opportunity to try to get downhill and
01:22it's unacceptable it is um you know we didn't do enough obviously to help ourselves and i'll start
01:29there um but you know ever since uh we came to cleveland the whistle has changed you know there's
01:36no way that one guy on their team shoots more free throws than our team you know we're not a
01:41settled team we're not a jump shooting team you know we drive the ball attack the paint um you know
01:46so what was done out there tonight you know it's frustrating um but you know we can't allow that to
01:54be the reason why because we didn't play well enough and play to the best of our capabilities
01:59uh but again you look at the foul count you look at the disparity uh and that's hard to overcome
02:06and you wonder you know the reason why um it's interesting you know since kenny made his comments
02:12uh publicly about you know us uh the whistles changed in this series and jb bickerstaff looking
02:18for a win next game says you know help us out refs a little bit that's all that's about right
02:23there
02:23okay well the odds maker certainly didn't know something last night we questioned it yesterday here
02:28on the show and there was a reason the lakers did cover last night but they got swept by the
02:32oklahoma city thunder that was the final shea gilgis alexander in a 115 to 110 victory for okc
02:40also mitchell had 28 chet holmgren had 19 and 9 but the bigger story percolating out of this
02:46is whether or not last night's game was the final one for lebron james so we simply don't know at
02:53this
02:53point so let's first hear from shea gilgis alexander on his 35 point performance and lebron weighs in on his
03:00future um yeah i mean we've done our job so far that's all it really means we've gone out there
03:07we've executed we played at a high level and we've been able to win eight tough games against really
03:13good opponents that's all it really means and uh nothing's guaranteed but in the playoffs no game no
03:21two games are the same especially when you change opponents so the challenges are all
03:29coming up i guess you could say everything that we've done so far is behind us we still have to
03:34reach our goal we uh have two more series to win to reach out to the goal and that's what
03:39we're focused
03:39well i think you guys asked me about it and i've answered questions yeah i don't think i've come out
03:45it's like oh retirement is coming yeah so um i mean what about future i don't know obviously i mean
03:52this is obviously we're still fresh from you know obviously losing um you know and i don't know i mean
04:00i don't know what the future holds for me obviously um as it stands right now tonight um i got
04:06a lot of
04:06time i'll sit back like i think i said last year after we lost i think to minnesota to go
04:11back and
04:11recalibrate with my family and and talk with them and spend some time with them and then when the time
04:17comes i obviously you know you guys know um but what i decided to do all right we'll see what
04:23lebron
04:24ends up doing more on him a little bit later in the show by the way tonight it's game five
04:27between
04:28the timberwolves and spurs we have a preview coming up a little bit later in the show as well okay
04:33over
04:33to some major league baseball hottest team in the america league remains the tampa bay rays they win on
04:37the road again 15th out of their last 17th this is a road trip of success thus far for tampa
04:43bay
04:43before they head home this weekend drew rasmussen picked up the win he's been great six innings
04:49pitch six strikeouts also kevin gossman reached 2 000 career strikeouts he's one of six active players
04:55but they ended up losing the game regardless chandler simpson uh had three hits but maybe had a cramp in
05:01that game as well uh yankees going through it for the first time this season they've now lost uh four
05:06games
05:06in a row orioles beat the yankees three to two and come back and win ryan weathers had a no
05:10hitter
05:10into the seventh inning but in the seventh it was colby mayo who hit a three-run home run to
05:15give
05:15the orioles a lead for good here's manager craig albernaz on that big shot kobe works hard he cares
05:22a lot and you know for him to come through right there was huge for him for us you know
05:29it's a late
05:32scratch ambush for him but all of our guys but to his credit like prepared he was ready prepared
05:40and that's a tough matchup like that lefty like he has some reverse split numbers the slide is real
05:47like it's a real tough matchup he did a great job of getting that slider up and then putting a
05:53good
05:53swing on it as we mentioned yesterday when the giants and dodgers match up you could kind of throw
05:59away the records this is an intense rivalry how about this trevor mcdonald who's joined the rotation
06:04for the giants he helps in the win nine to three san francisco picks up the victory maybe the bigger
06:11story for the giants though is the fact that rafael devers is now homered three times this week two
06:17for three and seems to be getting back on track here's manager tony vitello on the offense which was
06:23much needed and then the other thing about the at-bats offensively just it seemed to be a lot
06:27of guys grinding out at-bats um even prior to that last inning grinding out at-bats and trying to
06:34find
06:34whatever way to get a job done even when it wasn't successful you could see the intent like jung who's
06:40ground ball to first base was sharply hit it was just right at a good first baseman
06:45um so yeah overall the at-bats were really good and rafi kind of led the way
06:49it's been a tough start for vitello tough couple days by the way for the manager of the cleveland
06:54guardians stephen vote has missed the last two days with a viral infection so they've got a fill
06:59in their bench coach and acting manager tony arnerick he got his first win filling in for vote it was
07:06joey can tio who threw six innings and picked up the victory also travis bazana the young rookie got
07:13a win as well here's arnerick on getting his first win as manager first career win and
07:18beer shower to vote just uh what did that moment mean for you uh it's pretty cool you know you
07:25think about growing up playing in the big leagues and i guess it's the next best thing is if you
07:30can
07:30coach in the big leagues and just have the opportunity to manage obviously voter being sick
07:34isn't ideal um but at the end of the day the players go play and you know you sit there
07:39and
07:40you watch the game and there's some decisions to be made but um to be able to do that is
07:44cool for
07:44for me and my family and uh we're a big big baseball family and my grandpa growing up always told
07:50me about
07:50joe sewell who's a cleveland legend and how much he didn't strike out and he would remind us how much
07:57big leaguer strike out now so um just you know you you get brought up in this game and um
08:03i'd like to
08:04think my family my dad and my grandpa taught me about the history of the game so to be able
08:09to
08:10you know have a night in the dugout where i'm the manager and get a w yeah it's pretty cool
08:15our hopefully vote will be okay moving forward meanwhile the colorado avalanche go to minnesota
08:21and take a commanding lead in their best of seven they beat the wild three to one the canadians
08:26will play the sabers and they lead two to one in the series and the golden knights and duck square
08:33off in game five tonight at 9 30 eastern welcome back to newswire here on sports great dustin gawker
08:38is with us he's got a great podcast and also the closing line where he writes about everything
08:43prediction markets and such and great to have dustin back here on the show dustin thanks for
08:48coming on the program here so you know this is actually a learning tool for me because i didn't know
08:53that draft kings didn't have their own proprietary i guess operation as far as their prediction
09:00market business is concerned i simply thought when they launched their app and they launched their
09:04prediction markets as they were doing their own thing so my understanding learning from
09:08you here is that they've been using markets offered by other uh i guess other exchanges so
09:15so tell me why that happened and why they've decided to use their own exchange because simply
09:20put wouldn't it cost them more money to use this information there's a lot behind this yeah we just
09:26had draft kings and also we'll talk about fandle i think uh do their q1 earnings call we learned a
09:31lot
09:31about their prediction markets business of course they've both in the last couple months have
09:35have launched prediction markets themselves that are separate from their sports books but
09:39yeah draft kings has been using a combination of cme group which is a traditional commodities
09:45exchange it also has a prediction market uh operation it also has worked with crypto.com to
09:51to surface markets so when you look at draft kings and the prediction markets product you're actually
09:55looking at those markets it's being presented through draft kings but it's not so now they uh last year
10:01they have bought uh something called rail bird which allows them to offer their own exchange kind of
10:06like like not kind of like exactly like cal she does or polymarket does where they own the exchange and
10:12they can offer their own markets and control the whole thing themselves yes that that costs them
10:17money to do that but it gives them way more control of of the plumbing and and how all of
10:22this works it
10:22also it actually increases the amount of revenue they should be able to generate from all this right now
10:28they are a pass through for other markets um and they are they're just making a little bit of money
10:33now they're going to be able to generate more money in terms of fees and trading so this should
10:37be a net positive for draft kings when they get all of this and i think the goal for them
10:40will to be
10:41they're going to be live here they said before the end of the quarter i believe and certainly before
10:45football season okay let's now move over to fanduel i noticed their ceo uh was let go dustin and you
10:52know certainly it's hard to make progress as a company with no other sports betting states or
10:56legalizing sports betting and you're having to you know sort of go up against prediction markets
11:00as well maybe that has actually nothing to do with it i'll lean on you for this why did fanduel
11:04make that change yeah we had amy howe leave uh as ceo of the fanduel business fanduel is a part
11:10of the
11:11larger gambling company called flutter that's based in europe but fanduel is is a big part of what that is
11:17and you know fanduel's had some challenging results and uh things have changed obviously with prediction
11:22markets uh i think there's a there's probably a desire to you know push the envelope a little more
11:27than fanduel has so far in all of this and you know fanduel right now i'd say is probably trailing
11:32draft kings as as the sports books and other uh other entities look to get into prediction markets and
11:38and really scale that business because we look again we listen to q1 earnings for both companies and
11:42it's pretty clear i think draft kings is ahead of fanduel right now so this is um you know it's
11:47you know
11:47some of the challenging results on sports it's uh it's some of you know i think looking to the
11:52future of what uh what fanduel will be and its sports brands and prediction markets so but yeah
11:57fanduel just like draft kings is going to deploy a lot of capital into all of this uh both of
12:02them are
12:03forecasting a lot of spend heading into football season to scale that prediction markets product so
12:08um you know it's going to be all hands on deck we're going to see this giant marketing push i
12:12think
12:12uh in in the in the late summer early fall as the nfl and college football get started
12:18yep a few months for that also world cup coming up in june i would suspect a lot of folks
12:22going to
12:22be wagering on that all right prediction markets now let's get specifically to calci here record
12:27numbers for them in march at 13 billion what were the numbers in april yeah it grew again up to
12:3514.8
12:36billion in total trading volume again i caution people that's not the exact same thing as sports betting
12:41uh handle that we talk about uh in the state regulated sports books but it's a meaningful
12:45number um that that captures how much people are trading you and i if we go on to an app
12:50and trade
12:50but also the market makers on the other side of this so big number when we were starting football
12:54season we're talking like three to four billion a month and now you know even with football season
12:59over and kind of the sports calendar turning to spring and and summer when it's obviously slower in
13:04terms of of how much you can bet on obviously have playoffs and hockey and basketball but there's just
13:09fewer games going on so you know this is a it's an impressive number but for sure the part of
13:14this
13:14though is there the parlay product is growing uh that difference that you heard uh almost two billion
13:19between march and april most of that is coming from parlays and how palci is parla is scaling that
13:25parlay product and how much people are able to you know get down on parlays again that's uh it's a
13:30little inflated because you know if i if your high goes on calci and and trades a dollar to win
13:3599 that's getting captured as 100 of trading volume but still this points to the idea that
13:42this is growing and that the sports book product which you know it's growing because of same game
13:48parlays parlays that's what we've seen over the the life cycle of of sports betting here in the united
13:53states and now we're seeing that really take off in prediction markets so it's fascinating to see and
13:57we'll see how much bigger it gets here uh you know again in football season when when parlays are
14:02again the big thing and you know baseball right now too like it's a it's a popular way to bet
14:06on
14:06baseball yeah now i i did see a social media post from calci today regarding the hanta virus it's
14:13funny that i saw that and now we're talking about it here on this show now for those unfamiliar dustin
14:18this virus i guess came to fruition on a cruise of some kind um you know and actually since the
14:24pandemic everyone is always looking for that next pandemic i don't know that this is even a natural
14:28thought to have as a human being but we're all very well aware of it i'm guessing had the pandemic
14:33not happened this would probably be much ado about nothing but naturally in the prediction market space
14:39this is something that you can attack if you like yeah we want to talk about disease that's what we're
14:45here for right right craig uh anyway it's it is fascinating it's both a good and bad part of
14:50prediction markets like we're betting on whether there's going to be a pandemic or trading on it that's
14:54not great but at the same time we're getting data about what a market thinks about there being a
14:59public health emergency will the world health organization declare an emergency before the end
15:03of the year that's actually pretty interesting data we're not betting on people dying or getting uh
15:07getting hanta virus but we're learning something about the world and and what's going on so it's uh
15:12it's i think it's one of those things there there's some bad and some good with the prediction
15:16market here but you know again us us being able to price whether we're gonna have a pandemic yes
15:21right now it's a 13 chance calci has been about a half million dollars traded on that market and
15:26you know i think it's interesting data yeah definitely so all right let's uh let's end with
15:30some nba here oklahoma city uh on calci you can take a shot here and make a prediction as to
15:36whether
15:36or not they go unbeaten in the playoffs and and by the way i mean dustin not a crazy thought
15:42based on
15:42the way that they have played thus far yeah i mean close one last night but they still won
15:47for them to go 16 and 0 in the playoffs so they have to win the next two series by
15:51sweeps
15:51about 7.8 chance of that happening yeah you would think that at some point somebody would take them
15:57down for a game but you never know dustin as always very informative stuff we'll talk again soon thanks
16:01again
