01:41Like Fashion Designs, our cards are pieces of art with a story to tell, and they are each created and
01:47written to make an impression on the recipient.
01:48And, designers, you are going to make an impression on the judges with this challenge because these cards are not
01:56only your inspiration.

01:58They are the materials for your challenge.
02:01So, as I'm sure you've now deduced, this is an unconventional materials challenge.
02:07I am super excited that this is the first unconventional challenge.
02:10It's not every day that you get to work with crazy materials or go into Hallmark and get to go
02:15crazy and grab all the beautiful cards.
02:17And even though we're using unconventional materials, your looks need to look like real, wearable clothes.
02:23And you will have one day for this challenge.

02:29So, you will be making a Hallmark Signature Collection look in one day.
02:35When Amy gives you the signal, you will have two minutes to gather as many of the cards as you
02:43possibly can.

05:07So I wanted to create a poncho, and I thought that this would be a great material because it

05:46I, as a designer, have a point of view which is very out there.
05:49For instance, I take Alice in Wonderland as my inspiration, but it's Alice on Acid.
05:54It's a lot of work.
05:55I'm just torn between an umbrella skirt or a basic teal lip because I know umbrellas going
06:00to take forever.
06:00It might be a micro mini.
06:05So what are you doing?
06:06It's just a bodice up here.

06:09And then I have a high-low skirt.

06:11And then on the outside, I was playing with putting black glitter all over the fabric and
06:16then just puzzle-piecing it together with this and just having a sparkle moment on the
06:20runway.

06:22I'm afraid it's going to look like stained glass.

06:31To not be in the bottom, I need to make a dress that does not look torture.

06:47So I developed this shape, which I really love.

17:45Now, this is one of my favorite challenges, because I really think that it pushes you to
17:50be super creative to be super creative.
17:52We sent you to the Hallmark store to get your materials.
17:55You were to create a design using cards from the Hallmark signature collection.
17:59Your look was supposed to be fashionable and wearable.

18:04First, we have creative director of Brooks Brothers Women and fashion designer, Zach Posen.

18:16And today's guest judge, fashionable actress, star of Clipped, and also launching her new

18:30As you know, he is your mentor, and he will not be judging.
18:33That said, he will have one Tim Gunn save.
18:36All right, let's start the show.
18:45I'm literally seeing butterflies fly in the air from the skirt.
18:49The movement is amazing.
18:51The flowers have a life.
18:52The top, it's fitting her like a dream.
18:56The stripes match perfectly in the back.
18:59It's a cute detail.
19:06I just know I've made a poncho in the past, and I've been able to execute it the right
19:11way.
19:12I don't think that it's right for this challenge.
19:18I'm just glad that I have immunity at this point.
19:26I think that it is kind of funky and different.
19:29I just wish that I would have been able to use the cards in a different manner on the
19:35skirt.
19:37My concern is, is that the skirt is not going to be innovative enough for the judges.
19:49I'm really happy because we see the glitter is really casual, urban, modern, and sophisticated.

20:10And the fact that I've chosen one specific material to work with out of all of the cards,
20:15I hope it plays in my favor.
20:18I think that's the spirit of what this challenge was.
20:20Take the unconventional material and roll it until the wheels fall off if you can.
20:25And that's what I've done.
20:31The whole entire room and all the lights from the runway, it's like the dress is soaking
20:36it up and it looks fierce.
20:38I'm so happy that I owned that silver because it's rocking the runway.
20:43It doesn't look like paper.
20:45It looks like metal.
20:56I think my design is totally different than other people.
21:00It's like a young age, you know, fun.
21:09Oh, my God, that looks great.
21:16I actually like the color, how it looks and how it reads on the runway.
21:19I think it's more powerful than if I had done something white.
21:22I did not want it to be a very form-fitted dress.
21:24I wanted to have a little bit of a looser silhouette.
21:29But overall, I like it.
21:35I love the proportions.
21:38I love the shape.
21:39I love the color.
21:41The skirt is not too short.
21:43It's a good length.
21:46It all came together, and I'm very proud of myself for that.

23:46When you have a vision, getting it out,
23:49creating it so other people can see it,

25:17yeah I saw this purple shiny car that's a fabulous on it so I went straight for that and use
25:23it as the
25:23lining in the skirt and then there was another car that said there's no such thing as too much sparkle
25:29and I used that for the middle section and then I painted on the rest of it I like it
25:34I think it fits
25:35amazing and I like how you kept everything else simple because it's so much glitter thanks I like
25:43this dress I thought it had color it had presence I thought it was sexy most of all it actually

25:51like it is fabric thank you I loved it as well it's fun it's sparkly you know the ombre effect

26:18the materials that you use I wanted to use the envelopes I feel like not a lot of people are
26:23going to use those so I use the envelopes on the bottom and then I found this like textured gold

26:28I really like the feel of it and I wanted to just build like a pattern on the top and
26:34just keep it fun
26:34I really liked it I feel like you used interesting techniques you used like a tessellation pattern on
26:40the top and it fits really really well and you then created a different texture on the bottom you played
26:46with dimension of paper thank you very much I love that it's a crop top because that is very now
26:52I can't
26:53even tell that that is an envelope the texture on the skirt is awesome my favorite part of this is
26:59the top part of
27:00it so the pattern that you created is beautiful I just don't think the top and the bottom to me

27:04a little bit too much I agree with Heidi there's a lot going on you have fringe you have the

27:10you have the hoodie you have the sparkles I just wish they were a little more sophisticated sure thank you
27:18Kelly thank you Amanda tell us about your look and the materials that you use I wanted to do something
27:24that was fun and playful I used all cards this was all white like I thought it looked like lace
27:30so I
27:30pulled it all off of the cards and painted it and I wanted to create texture so it wasn't so
27:35flat so I
27:35put a print underneath and then I started making a whole bunch of little envelope fringe to give her
27:41some fullness to her skirt a little bit of volume so it had that playfulness about it I think the
27:48word
27:48you were looking for for the skirt was frou-frou yeah it's funny now I think you created a really
27:55nice texture and textile on top I love any kind of print placed against a dark border you know the
28:02skirt for me it didn't complete or wow me I do feel like it looks like you went to a
28:08party supply store and
28:10you got the glitter and the steamers and then finally the pinata it's all there you got caught up in
28:16that party supply store it's not my favorite okay it's just not working I think once you are almost
28:23halfway done or whatever you have to step back and look at it as a whole it just didn't go
28:29with each
28:29other and then the slant I was just like didn't know if it was unfinished or like what it was
28:35thank
28:35you Amanda thank you Edmund now it makes sense why you're wearing what you're wearing you're the
28:41Graham so tell us about your look tell us what you used my inspiration was a bridal card so I
28:49built
28:49the bodice of the dress with the back of the car because I wanted it to be white but just

28:54completely white the bouquet itself is made out of the envelope of some of the cards and the leafing
29:01and also the jewelry I have to say Edmund I love this look thank you you played with volume which

29:07love I love the proportions the fits are beautifully it is sexy at the same time not every wedding dress

31:25is the unconventional material challenge for me you bedazzled it with it but you didn't create the entire look with
31:33it well it's clear to me that I think you're probably one of the more sophisticated
31:37fashion savvy designers in the competition but you didn't use the cards if the base of his jacket had been
31:45cards you probably would have been in the top it's okay it's like an army jacket with a hood is
31:52it horrible and hideous no but is it creative no okay I think it's cool I just I don't know
