00:00the Jets continue to make moves this offseason and they're moving on from a quarterback they
00:05signed last offseason Justin Fields is heading to the Kansas City Chiefs for a sixth round pick
00:11so we're going to talk about what this means for the Jets as they move forward with their
00:15offseason joining me to talk about it is Ryan Dunleavy our great NFL reporter here with the
00:20New York Post Ryan busy busy busy offseason for the Jets they keep it moving Justin Fields
00:26is out of here some people not saying you some people thought he could be the solution for the
00:32Jets at quarterback he was not so I'm going to ask you this yeah it was he said it wasn't
00:37you either
00:37what do you make how do we look at I don't even know if I want to call it an
00:41error a tenure uh one
00:43season how do we judge Justin Fields in his time here in New York he was a failure yeah he
00:50got 27
00:51million dollars for nine starts three of those games or made four of those games he threw for
00:56under 55 yards wasn't as dynamic a run thread as he was for the Bears earlier in his career and
01:03that
01:03was a flop and anybody could have seen that coming I mean it was a uh it was a prayer
01:08that he would
01:09suddenly it would click the way it has for you know Sam Darnold x-jet or G or Gino with
01:15their
01:15Seahawks x-jet so um yeah I would say it was a it was a it was a swing and
01:22a miss for for the Jets
01:24and for Justin Fields here so swing and a miss for the Jets and Justin Fields I don't know about
01:29you Ryan were you surprised the Jets were able to actually trade him and that there was some value
01:34for Justin Fields in here and getting a six-round pick and how much does it matter for the Jets
01:38in
01:38their cap situation that they were able to move on from Fields at this point in offseason yeah I'm
01:44surprised yeah I Darren Mugi's good at this trading thing like he's made 12 trades in 14 months I think
01:51uh he's good at swapping late round picks for players that are you know looking for a change
01:58of scenery and then change and then swapping his players to get back those late round picks he's
02:03good at the he's good at the moving parts of trades uh we'll see if he can draft but he's
02:08good
02:08at stockpiling draft capital I know that so um I was surprised there was a market for Fields
02:15the Chiefs lost Gardner Minshew to the Cardinals they basically have a different backup quarterback
02:21every year uh you know uh Minshew Blake Gabbert Blaine Gabbert uh Carson Wentz they basically
02:29change somebody every year so uh surprised and it's important to answer the key part of your question
02:35it's important because they got a draft pick and more importantly they got three million dollars
02:43of salary cap relief they're going to pay seven of the 10 million that he's owed so they got three
02:48million of salary cap relief which essentially just redirects to their new starting quarterback
02:54Gino Smith they owe him 3.3 million uh basically that the Raiders aren't paying so they're paying
03:02off Justin Fields to go away the Raiders are paying off Gino Smith to come here and it all washes
03:07out as
03:07like the Jets owe another three hundred thousand dollars to quarterbacks oh savings are always
03:13good right especially when you're moving off of a sunk cost now I guess the question for you is you
03:17just brought up Gino Smith who the Jets traded for last week and now we're going to be in the
03:22second
03:23Gino Smith era with the Jets here well how are you or not how are you but where are you
03:29right now
03:30on the Jets and their quarterback situation because we know the Jets have been looking for an answer
03:34at quarterback sometime do you think they're in a good spot moving on from Justin Fields
03:39to Gino Smith to be sort of that bridge quarterback to whoever that may be as a quarterback of the
03:44future a good spot no uh like maybe like as good as they could have hoped for in the veteran
03:52market
03:52that's depleted sure I would have liked to see the Jets take a swing on a younger guy with more
03:59upside
03:59a Mac Jones uh Tanner McKee somebody like that in the trade market maybe those guys aren't available
04:05maybe they become available later and the Jets add them with uh Gino Smith and then you have a
04:11competition uh right now I don't like the quarterback Jeff depth chart it's Gino Smith coming off another
04:17injury another interception heavy season and then you have to go then behind him you basically have an
04:23undrafted rookie last year in uh Brady Cook who looked totally overwhelmed and then you have Bailey
04:30Zappi who uh you know has been well traveled since his flash in the pan under Bill Belichick so not
04:37enough quarterback depth chart they still need to add a veteran there whether it's somebody to compete
04:41with Gino or backup Gino uh I guess they you know like if you're telling me I would have rather
04:47had
04:47Tua guess he wasn't coming here Kyler Murray was never going to come here and I don't think they were
04:53ever really interested in Kyler Murray he doesn't fit Frank Reich's prototype for quarterbacks uh size
04:59wise so uh I guess once you take those two guys out there to me they were clearly the best
05:04there's
05:05really not a difference I guess between Gino Smith and Kirk Cousins and Carson Wentz and all those guys
05:11in that same bucket yeah I would have to agree the Jets quarterback room right now doesn't inspire a lot
05:17of confidence for Jets fans but they moved on from Justin Fields they trade him to Kansas City
05:22and it'll be a new era at quarterback for the Jets that is Ryan Dunleavy our NFL reporter here
05:27at the New York Post Ryan appreciate the time thanks for joining me
05:31you
