00:13What's up guys so today in this video I'm going to share with you is Bruce Lee's fighting method.
00:22Now this fighting method of his is performed by Richard Bastillo and Ted Wong. Richard on the
00:28left Ted Wong on the right and these two are Bruce Lee students. Richard is more of a concept guy
00:36who
00:36trains with Dan and Asanto right after Bruce passed away. Now Ted Wong is a student that was started at
00:48the school in LA but then eventually Bruce Lee picked him up and took him to train in Bruce Lee's
00:58backyard so Ted is actually Bruce's student one of the backyard students and Ted eventually became
01:08Bruce Lee's very very close friend if not a best friend of Bruce Lee's. So in this little video
01:18it's like an hour or something long but I actually I actually cut some stuff out that weren't really
01:26necessary like the warm-ups and some of the the punches that were they weren't just punches but
01:34there were other stuff that was incorporated in there too so I kind of shortened it up so that
01:38we can kind of talk about it and it's still pretty long it's like 30 something minutes but some things
01:45I want to show and some things I want to point out and these are some of the fighting methods
01:51okay
01:51we're gonna kind of review and talk about them also so other leg flexibility exercises this warm-up
01:59right here Ted is doing a a stretch certain kind of stretch that Bruce Lee would normally do so he
02:08will use this pulley system to pull his leg up for a side kick or a front kick to kind
02:15of help him stretch
02:15so that he can actually get his leg up further and this is how Bruce Lee got his famous side
02:22kick
02:23was doing this stretch right here it is important to position your arms feet and head now in this part
02:30of the of the leading hand the whole series here Ted is actually showing you guys the stance so this
02:39is
02:39the JKD stance right shoulder raised an inch or two and the chin dropped about the same distance
02:47and this is the perfect way of standing for JKD fighters or for a actual JKD person so this is
02:57the
02:57front view of course and bone structure are in the best possible alignment protecting the point of the
03:02chin and you see how he has the heel in the back there and then that line in the middle
03:08that's how you're supposed to stand for a JKD only in rare extreme defensive maneuvers to the point
03:16of the chin be tucked into the lead shoulder Ted's very slim I remember meeting Ted he was very very
03:24thin
03:25about like my height but he had no fat on him whatsoever and now you can see here this is
03:37Richard's standing in like a bear stance he's standing in the wrong way where he's showing his center line
03:45and Ted is actually hiding more of his center line behind that front leg
03:53so now Ted is moving around in the stance and he's showing you certain things you can and can't do
04:02the most important aspect of the on guard stance without proper balance at all times you will lose
04:07body control in the middle of now Bruce Lee's stance was made more for the front hand and as he
04:15moved back
04:15when he dropped that hand down that was going to become a back fist when he came forward so that's
04:22why that
04:22hand would go down when he moved back kind of it was kind of like baiting you to move in
04:27some more so he can
04:28back fist you in the face or he'll come around and hook you in the face so these are some
04:34of the things
04:34that you can actually do from this stance and Ted is the perfect example of a a a real JKD
04:45practitioner or if you're going to use it in combative form so this is now we gotta remember
04:52two Ted is Bruce Lee's backyard student so this is the stuff that Bruce taught Ted remember if you
04:59tense up you lose your balance timing and flexibility which are essential to all proficient fighters
05:09to advance do not cross or hop but shuffle your feet at the outset you will feel okay so now
05:16these are
05:17the footwork so the JKD stands the footwork and they explain it very well in this video
05:33step and then you bring that back feet forward just like that this is one of the footwork that
05:40I was taught when I started training JKD stepping forward and then bring that back feet forward but
05:45you still leave that little gap in the middle so that you can actually move you can actually you're
05:51not off balance because if your feet are both together then that would actually restrict you
05:56from moving left and right and you're off balance now this was another move that another footwork that I
06:04learned and this is moving back you're doing the exact same thing you're moving that back leg first and
06:10you bring that front feet back front foot is in place you should be in the on guard position and
06:16perfectly just like this unlike the advanced shuffle your weight would shift slightly for just an instant
06:21to your rear foot and Ted is very very light on his feet if you ever see him move in
06:26person he is
06:28phenomenal his footwork is so so nice quick advance I actually call this a lunge step because your back
06:37feet is actually moving in quickly slide your back foot almost see how that back feet is moving in
06:42all the way towards the front feet instantly so you're actually pushing off that back feet because
06:47the front foot will be in it you could actually move that feet forward first but the purpose of this
06:54movement is to move your body quick just like that eight feet or more but I think the next the
07:00next move
07:00the next footwork is going to be the one where you are going to move that feet forward first
07:07the footwork for the quick retreat or rapid backward movement is almost similar to the
07:12same thing except you move in the opposite direction unlike the quick advance you do not have to slide your
07:18foot a few inches it is just one quick motion but your body should be in alignment and in balance
07:24Ted does this really really well when you see him in person
07:27he initiates the movement with the rear foot following just a split second later
07:31and it's just so light on his feet now this this is the one I was talking about the burst
07:37you're
07:37actually bringing in that that back feet first and then you move the front is just like that
07:49just like a pendulum
08:16I remember doing this too in practice so you're stepping to the side if you're stepping to the
08:22left your left feet moves first if you step to the right your right feet on the rear foot
08:28so it won't complicate you and your feet won't cross and resume the that way your feet are still
08:36in the same distance and also they're not crossing if ever you fight like a a wrestler who's trying to
08:43take you down feet crossing is probably the worst because when your feet crosses you're off balance
08:49toward your right you're vulnerable and you can't move back and forth you can't really move that off
08:55if your feet are crossed so left left foot right right foot first very very simple
09:07now this was a good way of practicing slipping and dodging the reason why is because it's a pull
09:16it's not something big that's coming at you it's actually something very small so your eyes get
09:21used to seeing this small object coming at you just like a punch and here ted is showing you how
09:33to hold
09:34your thumb your punches so this is how you actually make a fist when you're throwing a punch
09:44and richard is now going to show you the best way of throwing power punches
09:51a lot of people think that you have to use a heavy bag for power actually it's really not it's
09:58it's actually a piece of paper this is how bruce lee practices power because what he would do was
10:04he would punch at the paper and try to make the paper move and by doing so you're adding snap
10:12into
10:12the punches and making the paper move so when you're about to hit it you snap at the last minute
10:20to make
10:21the paper move so the extra power is there when you throw that punch now once you get better at
10:30this you can actually do it to a candle if you light up a candle you set it there and
10:35you try to punch
10:36it try to just knock it out with air so punch as hard as you can snap at the end
10:43and try to push the
10:44ear into that candle and knock it out i mean i've seen some grand masters that have done it and
10:50they
10:50knocked out not just one candle but they knocked out a whole bunch of candles you know if you see
10:56like uh conor mcgregor if you ever see him doing it he he knocks out candles and he actually uses
11:03his
11:03feet to to put out candles too it's not really easy it's actually pretty hard because you're actually
11:09generating as much power as you can in the punches to try to knock out that candle so very very
11:15neat way
11:16of actually learning how to actually throw power into your punches and that's what bruce lee used to
11:22do and your weight should shift now here this is where richard bastille is hitting the heavy bag
11:27and you see how he's twerking or his hips are twerking and they're turning and the power just coming
11:36straight from the hips it's coming straight from the hips and i don't know if he's actually snapping
11:41with the punches but that's the way of throwing an actual punch because you don't want to really
11:47wind up for a punch to throw for power you just have your hands in front and now the power
11:54just
11:54comes from the hips the torque your feet your forearm your lats and that's where the power comes from
12:01when you throw in those punches and that's what he's working on right here is where he's turning
12:08punching that with power and he's just keeping everything very very close and tight so he
12:13doesn't have to wind up for a punch or he doesn't have to totally turn for a really hard punch
12:20or
12:20anything and so here they're hitting mitts and ted is is just doing very simple basic punches just jab
12:30cross hooks hooks uppercuts that's about it he's not doing any spinning back fists or you're not seeing any
12:37kind of other fancy punches it's just straight punches jab cross and if there's a hook he throws a
12:44bent arm punch you know just but he's still extending it out jab crosses see just like what i said
12:52jab
12:52crosses ted's just practicing the simple jab crosses or cross jabs and that's basically what jkd is it's
12:59just pretty much using as little tools as you can you don't have to use all the tools that you
13:05have because
13:05it doesn't need all the tools to take someone out yeah sometimes it just only takes a jab cross and
13:11that's it so here's the sidekick okay now you see how ted is perfectly straight with the sidekick
13:21to execute a powerful sidekick stand with your feet apart and parallel to each other comes in
13:27that feet replaces that foot that foot goes out just like that brings it back in
13:32right foot and sets it out that's a perfect sidekick see how he turns his hip like that
13:37with that extra twerp you're going to actually get that that hip to hit further and your body
13:45is going to be like a pole it's going to act like a pole when you hit them so they're
13:49going to actually
13:49fly back like that so here he does it again boom now i've never actually felt ted wong sidekick
14:06but that guy is flying back pretty far so i'm assuming he can kick pretty hard
14:20nice very nice now to the heavy bag now if you ever watch bruce lee's sidekick he does it
14:27there's like two ways of him doing a sidekick and i covered that one in uh bruce lee's sidekick
14:34where bruce lee would kick it straight like how ted's doing right now
14:39or if you were like a bigger taller person bruce lee would actually send you up
14:44up into the air so he'll do it like at a angle where he's actually kicking upwards
14:51and that's what knocks people off balance is because when he kicks at an angle he knocks you up
14:57and you're trying to catch yourself when you're falling back down but you're off balance already
15:03and so that's why they go they start pedaling backwards so that was bruce lee's way of kicking
15:09was either straight forward or or slanted going at the upward angle now this is the front kick this
15:15is the second kick that they um ted wong shows and it's just a simple front kick using the pendulum
15:22step so foot replaces the front foot and then using your kicking upwards instead of relying only on the
15:28now that that is like you're kicking them in the balls and so you're just like kicking them between
15:32the legs and and then there's the thrust the front this is also a front kick but more like a
15:41thrust kick
15:41so it's a front it's a forward thrust kick or a front thrust kick but we we just call it
15:49front kick
15:50just keep it simple there's there's different varieties of the kick so front thrust inverted kick
15:59now this one is to the side okay these were useful but they're very tricky because you're you're at a
16:06bad angle when you're done so if you miss the guy the guy's very easily to trip you or he's
16:14actually
16:14very easily to to return fire and you're in a bad position because you're on the side so these i
16:21rarely
16:21ever use in the cage in practice yep never i don't think i've ever used the inverted kick can be
16:31targeted to the legs the groin and the head of your opponent so tat's showing you all the variations of
16:39the front kick and then the hook kick the third kick
16:46now this was uh they would call it the front roundhouse but it would just be a they um jkd
16:55guys
16:55would call it a hook kick where the front leg would actually come around and it was called the hook
17:02kick
17:02because that front leg can actually hook behind the opponent's leg and pull it backwards so so you'll be
17:12pulling it back and then they would be losing balance so it was kind of like a tricky which
17:17automatically kick where it was also a a front round kick to a hook kick you could also hook the
17:23leg
17:24and that's why it was called the hook kick because you could do many things with that kick right here
17:30so coming from the side looping around hooking it is especially kicking to the head the stomach the neck
17:40so that was the hook kick for the jkd guys who trained with ted now the speed training this this
17:47um way of training speed we did something similar to this but this way was actually a lot safer the
17:55way we did it was more um bad for your elbow so i would do this and this was something
18:02that i thought
18:03was really neat it is a test as to whether you can hit the target before he can clap your
18:08hand
18:08if he can then let him reduce the distance between his hands to about six inches so that is a
18:16really
18:16neat drill actually trying to get that with speed drill training that was really fun as the assailant
18:23attacks now we're going to do some self-defense and we're going to actually critique and talk about
18:27some of these see if they work and what i think about them now if you see here ted comes
18:34out he just
18:35kicks to the knee and then punches them in the face that is so typical of jkd practitioners and
18:45fighters because you're getting directly to the point so you're kicking him in the knee and you
18:50punch him in the face instead of trying to trap some hands or or do anything you're just kicking them
18:55and then finishing it off with a blow with no warning so here i don't know why somebody would
19:04come and sidekick you but you know if it doesn't ever happen which it does sidekick through the leg and
19:12you would throw them down like this which this is something i would never use i i think it would
19:19it's
19:20just kind of funny how someone would come and sidekick you but this was in the books that bruce lee
19:26wrote his in his fighting method one of the ways of attack i'm guessing this is already two people
19:33about to fight that's why the guy has his hands up and he's down like that so here ted steps
19:39back and
19:40just kicks him right in the back and then pulls a shirt finishes all him off with like a
19:47stomp to the face or a kick to the face bam very cruel but i like it because that if
19:54you kick someone
19:55in the face when they're down that more likely might finish the fight might even kill him
20:03oh that was just funny how he came in like that
20:08now here the person's winding up for the punch and closest weapon closest target sidekick
20:17sidekick his leg was closest to the web closest to the target so he used his leg to kick the
20:24guy and
20:25that's one thing that you're probably going to hear a lot in jkd is when they say closest target closest
20:31closest weapon to closest target carry the block to the side of your head and immediately follow
20:35with a finger jab to the eye
20:45it's always going to be the closest hand or the closest leg to the target now in this situation
20:51right here in your weight evenly on he uses his rear hand
20:54a finger jab to the eye and that is because his rear hand was more in front
21:09now here he's actually in his other stance so
21:14he uses leg as the closest closest weapon to the closest target
21:18where this guy's face was a target and he kicked him in the face now don't think that
21:24the face is the only target or the body is the only target too you can also hit the hands
21:28and the
21:29feet too those are targets also here richard's got a guillotine
21:35grab the assailant's neck in a headlock sprawling backwards
21:38slide your front foot backward and pin the assailant to the ground while me and
21:43be sure to i don't know what this is but or the attacker could make a strike to your groin
21:51yeah i don't know about this one but if i if it was me i would definitely drop on his
21:57head
21:59and not on my elbow though but drop on his head and attempts to knee your groin
22:03grab the assailant's left arm let's see yeah okay okay
22:10then thrust your left one two three oh and the trip oh that was a real trip too well
22:18this for me it kind of a little bit too much because he grabs your shirt and then richard i
22:26think does
22:27like a a trapping and hits him in the balls chokes him and sweeps him a little bit too much
22:35when you
22:36could just kick him in the balls and then gouge him in the eyes now he's pulling richard kicks the
22:46thigh
22:49and then punches him in the face okay i like the punch right because he's in position for it which
22:54i
22:55when you i would like i agree with this one i don't mind with this one the only thing is
23:00that you could
23:00have just punched him in the face in the first place instead of the kick to the thigh because now
23:05you're off balance and then the stomp to the head is always a good one boom boom sweep and then
23:14stomp to
23:14the head yeah side kick okay lean back and quickly deliver on to the knee i'm assuming that's the kneecap
23:26that they're trying to kick yeah yeah okay and then punches the face i'm assuming that was meant to be
23:34there now here is a cross twist your hip and deliver some grabs your hand cross i like that because
23:41i've done
23:41that before a guy grabbed my hand in the cage and i sent my other hand at him and he
23:47ducked right out
23:48of the way that was funny but here we got oh right through the balls yeah i actually seen that
23:56one in
23:57the cage before but it wasn't to the balls actually to the face because the guy he actually had him
24:03in a
24:03a crucifix and the guy elbowed him right in the face instead of the balls but he's in that position
24:11so that that that'll be fine coming from behind grabbing the hand turning around immediately and
24:22doing a sidekick bam spinning back kick to the same section of his body with your other and then you're
24:28doing another sidekick with a reverse lock or actually no turning back kick instantly before
24:33he can pin you to the ground yeah that's kind of hard to do because he's so close so you
24:37won't be able
24:38to get much uh much distance to build up that power so i would say nah lock the attacker's arm
24:46this one
24:48okay i can see why he did that but i think if he lift up the knees and knee him
24:55in the balls and then
24:56punch him in the face would have been fine it would have worked too because they were the same
25:01almost the same height you know it still would have worked in this section is to trap the assailant's
25:08right elbow him right in the face grabbing those hands so he doesn't move yeah yeah that that would
25:15work an attacker sneaks up behind you and grabs your shirt now we gotta turn your torso back this to
25:22the
25:22face the attacker's face yes that definitely will work especially oh yeah when he put in real real
25:29time yeah look good you with a back arm lock that is difficult now someone's got you from back there
25:34and you do a turning back kick kick to his groin yeah to the balls okay yeah i i could
25:41agree with that one
25:43the assailant grabs your grabbing your shirt and you just punch him in the face sure
25:47you have the assailant i like that left hand and at the same directly to the point and then go
25:51for
25:52a leg sweep follow up with the trip and take down throw him to the ground instead of a punch
25:57to
25:58the assailant's jaw yeah no problem with that one use an effective finger jab and dropping your knee on
26:03his face uh-huh yep he'll like that boom boom
26:13defense against choke holds and hugs okay now chokes and assailant attempts to choke
26:20boom there you go see and deliver a front kick to his groin if that's there take it i don't
26:26know why
26:26people don't do that more often i i don't know honestly i i i'm like dumbfounded why they don't do
26:32that i understand the guy was taller than you and they lift you up and you couldn't do it but
26:38most
26:39times they just don't do it an attacker has no let's see this one quickly deliver your jab to
26:45his eyes okay that's kind of hard to do because your head is already stuck there so getting that
26:51hand all the way up there is difficult i would have just used that closer hand the one that's right
26:56around his back to come on top of his arm and grab his hair or grab his nose like that
27:03but i wouldn't
27:04come on that side i would actually go on the other side and push him away but that works too
27:09if that
27:10works for you me i kind of have shorter arms and guys are tend to be taller than me so
27:18and richard bastillo i've actually met him twice he he is actually a pretty tall guy
27:22the same headlock he's like 5 10 5 11 and with your free yeah he's i'm like 5 7 so
27:28he's actually
27:29taller than me whenever you're very nice guy i remember him um the attacker will
27:35he didn't have this much hair that's for sure
27:40an assailant sneaks up behind you and strangles you with his left arm grabbing your right elbow to the
27:46stomach and stomp on the foot all right yeah quickly to your right and apply an elbow
27:53strength i think that one will work this one yeah bam bam yep well it depends depends who you're
28:00elbowing too because okay now this one i would definitely agree with and that immediately for
28:04like if it was a child those were the sensitive spot so you're still going to affect them if they
28:10were bigger than you but the the one before this one i kind of question about that one
28:16this one has a bear hug around you turn the elbow to the face instead of attempting to free yourself
28:22from the grip now you're going for a wrist lock or actually no one continue with an arm or a
28:30key lock
28:32yeah i was taught this one in mma and it's very difficult to get honestly because you really have
28:39to fight for it but if you get it you you got it
28:46standing bear hug oh okay so you actually grip their pants so that they can't lift you any higher
28:54ah i just learned something new
29:00oh that's actually neat and then do a do a flying knee to the balls okay
29:07swing back your head to bang it against the assailant's face
29:10another option is to execute a blow to his groin with either of your free hand
29:14pat him in the balls and then they'll let go okay in this situation because the attacker can't do
29:19anything to you i could believe that as he keeps hugging you that's a sensitive spot so
29:25i could believe that will probably work the assailant has a frontal headlock
29:28i've got you in the headlock
29:29right through the balls yep that's what i would do
29:35close quarters fighting you may i would actually carry through with that i was just like the most
29:39important thing if they were if they were my size if they were bigger it's it's gonna be difficult to
29:45lift them up
29:53okay so they got it swings a club at stepping back just enough and let the club miss you quickly
29:59sidekick after he misses with the knife yeah so you gotta wait until he actually swings that knife and then
30:05sidekick him that is uh very very hard to do honestly you gotta have perfect timing for that and you
30:14gotta be fast too as the duck under swings his club at you duck under the blow and block his
30:20arm to prevent
30:21another swing block the arm immediately counter with a knee come up with a knee to the gut ooh
30:29yeah okay
30:36all right so i can see if they're very slow yeah i can see that happening
30:42of course you got to finish them off so you can get back up
30:46oh yeah this one is scary i would not do this one if that was an actual knife and he
30:53did that yeah i
30:54wouldn't i would stay away from this one
31:00yeah
31:02okay so here as the attacker attempts a swing at you
31:06so you move in before he actually swings so you actually
31:11block that arm so he doesn't swing that bat and then come in with a shovel hook him in the
31:16stomach
31:17and then kick his front leg and stomp on his head okay very scary you're at a farther distance
31:25this one's a little more scary as it passes over your head quickly counter with a hook kick to the
31:30kick him in the stomach and then
31:35stomp him his face when it's in the air okay
31:39okay i i agree with the last one but um yeah this one's scary
31:48especially when they swing like that
31:50when the assailant thrusts his staff
31:52now that's if they're trying to poke you with this pull follow up with a side kick to his chest
31:57while still holding on to the staff and a roundhouse kick most time guys don't do that
32:01they don't use a stick to try to poke you in the stomach so that's actually very rare
32:08they usually use it for like a a bat style where they're trying to bat your head off
32:13again again or they're trying to seize the staff and quickly execute a front kick to his hand like
32:19a 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock like this it might happen it might i don't know
32:34yeah okay so we got a knife here with a knife
32:37before he attacks so you're gonna make a finger jab toward his face which will cause him to react
32:43swiftly okay so you're gonna distract him with that front hand so he brings that knife up and then
32:48kick him to the leg all right and then now foot stomp to the head okay okay i can i
32:59can see the
33:00distraction you know like fake a really yeah like that i could see that happening all right
33:06you just got you gotta like that one was planned you have to plan that one out quickly evade the
33:12one's timing back all right so you gotta go after he tries to slash you and you gotta go fast
33:19too
33:19else he's gonna come back and try to slash you now this guy's got a gun quickly turn your body
33:24counterclockwise using your arm to the throat and so you'll be away from the line of fire and
33:30attack his neck here maintain a hold on his wrist and follow up blows to the face while disarming the
33:37weapon yeah man i don't know see the thing with this one they could just bend that arm and the
33:46gun
33:47is still in their hand if you turn around you know like if they see you do that they could
33:51just bend
33:51their arm really quick so i would uh i mean yeah i see richard is so close to him too
33:59that's why he
34:00couldn't bend his arm but i move away from the line of fire this one in his throat and seizing
34:06his
34:06wrist to damn this one is uh you you got to be fast so that it doesn't fire at you
34:13and i can see it
34:15happening but i wouldn't there's just so much moves i would definitely just push him to the side
34:23and and punch him in the face and gouge him in the eyes so you can't see me but without
34:28warning man
34:28that one is difficult but you should immediately i can see that happening so ted's in the chair
34:33and here ted just closest weapon closest target foot to the face his stomach that's it while sitting
34:44in the chair you're surprised there comes another one grabs your shirt with both hands quickly
34:49counter with a right punch to his to the balls
34:56see what i mean like jkd is more direct to the point ted gets directly to the point
35:02and that the point is to finish him off and that's the most sensitive spot for a man hit him
35:08in the
35:08balls while sitting in a chair that sailen surprise now someone chokes you from behind while you're sitting
35:15immediately grab his hair with the arm closest to his head and if he has hair this only works if
35:21he
35:21has hair right so if he doesn't have hair i i don't know about this one now gouge him in
35:29the eyes okay
35:31and yes i can i can totally agree with this one if he has hair you are pinned by an
35:36assailant who has
35:37a headlock now if he's got you in a headlock on the ground hand pinned yes that that definitely
35:43will work with your legs and apply yes you can bring that hand all the way around and do that
35:50and then going into a key lock
35:58yeah i would still push in that chin because even though you get that leg over and his head he'll
36:04still you are lying on your back with the attacker choking you
36:08someone choking you on top to relieve the choke this one is difficult um and execute a finger so i
36:14i've
36:14done jujitsu and there's different ways of getting out of this but most of the time you want them to
36:22ride on your hips not on your body or you are more on on your chest so here you can
36:29still turn them and
36:30throw them over but if they're riding high there's a different it's different too you gotta use a
36:35different way of of attacking them but that's pretty much it you guys these are some of the things that
36:44i wanted to share and talk to you about and we kind of want to critique and just see if
36:48these moves work
36:49but this was a while back and this video is pretty old as you guys can see so i'm just
36:59gonna throw this
