00:00To be continued...
00:52The late Bruce Lee, a legendary figure in the martial arts world.
00:59His art, Jit Kune Do, continues to stay alive today.
01:10Richard Bustillo, director and co-founder of the IMB Academy.
01:17He's always in high demand at the International Martial Arts Seminars.
01:23Ted Wong, trained with Bruce Lee toward the later stages of Jit Kune Do development, becoming
01:31Lee's last major private student and considered his protégé.
01:39Jit Kune Do never intended to have any limitations and it continued to be modified and improved
01:46by the late Bruce Lee.
01:52Although this video can never replace the actual teaching and knowledge that Bruce Lee
01:57possesses, it will enhance you, the serious martial artist, in developing your skill in fighting.
02:12This video will consist of warm-ups, basic exercises, on-guard positions, footwork, power training,
02:18speed training, and self-defense techniques.
02:33To warm up, select light, easy exercises to loosen your muscles and to prepare them for
02:39more strenuous work.
02:40Besides improving your performance, warming up exercises are necessary to prevent injury
02:46to your muscles.
02:47No smart athlete will use his hand or leg violently without first warming up carefully.
02:54These light exercises should dictate as closely as possible the ensuing, more strenuous types
02:59of movement.
21:49Remember to
25:12your right foot straight down with force and let it snap upward about an inch from the floor like
25:18punching with the flowing energy here again you should concentrate with heaviness in your foot
25:24for the extra power twist your hips just an instant before the full extension of your leg
25:29so it gives you the twisting force in your kick then snap your foot at the full extension for the
25:35whipping effect
26:09after you have the knack of doing the sidekick you are prepared to kick the heavy bag from the
26:15on-guard position do the forward burst and aim your blow directly at the center of the bag
26:20at impact your foot should land horizontally on the bag not obliquely the sound at impact should
26:26be a loud cracking thud like a whip if you have kicked through the bag and snapped your foot at
26:31the end if there is more push than hit the sound will be a weak thud in both kicks there
26:37is force
26:38exerted except the hit will do the damage and the push will just knock the opponent down innocuously
26:59the front kick
26:59although the front kick is not as powerful as the sidekick you can increase the explosiveness of
27:04your kick by using your hips instead of relying only on the snap of your foot from the knee try
27:10jerking your hips forward just an instant before contact timing of this movement is very important
27:16and difficult to do but by using your body instead of just your legs you can add much more power
27:21to
27:44this kick
27:45like the front kick the inverted kick is delivered in a similar snapping motion except that your foot is
27:51angled out toward your opponent's body and contact is made with the top of the foot
28:09opposite of the hook kick the inverted kick can be targeted to the legs the groin and the head of
28:15your
28:31the knee to the head of your opponent
28:40lift your lead knee until your thigh is horizontal your leg below the knee should be
28:45hung loosely pointing to the floor at about 45 degrees. Your weight should be
28:49completely on the rear foot with the knees slightly bent and your body
28:53leaning backwards. Then pivot on the ball of your rear foot which automatically
28:58induces your hips to rotate. Finally snap your foot from the knee which
29:02straightens the supporting leg. The hook kick is performed with just one motion
29:07from the time your foot leaves the foot. The hook kick is focused generally on
29:12the upper line from the waist to the head. It is especially effective when
29:16targeting the ribs.
29:36The back fist punch is not the quickest nor is it too strong because you are
29:40unable to utilize the total body movement. But it is one blow in which you can
29:45fully apply the whipping or snapping motion to increase your speed at impact.
29:52The back fist is delivered from shoulder height but can also be used as a surprise
29:57attack and be launched anywhere from your waistline to your shoulder. It is very
30:02difficult to block once you have acquired the non-telegraphic moves.
30:22The leading finger jab is the fastest attacking weapon available to you. It is fast in reaching your target because
30:29it travels only a short distance.
30:31Accuracy and speed is essential in this technique because you focus your aim at the eyes of your enemy.
30:37The jab is a dangerous weapon to the adversary because it does so much damage and is very difficult to
30:43defend against.
30:44Since you do not clench your fist but have your fingers extended you add several more inches to your reach.
30:50To protect yourself from damaging your fingers, learn to form your hand properly.
30:56Align the tip of your hand by slightly bending the longer fingers to adjust to the shorter and tuck your
31:02thumb in.
31:03Your hand should resemble a spear.
31:06Speed relies on economy of motion and the jab is one technique with which you have the opportunity to experiment.
31:12The jab, like all the blows in JKD, must be thrust forward without any retracting motion.
31:21The trick in non-telegraphic moves is to relax your body and arms but keep them weaving in a slight
31:27motion.
31:28Whip out your hand loosely so your shoulders don't tense and clench your fist just an instant before contact as
31:34you snap it.
31:35You have to keep a poker face while facing your opponent.
31:38A slight twitch or expression on your face may trigger your intention and warn your opponent.
31:58You can train in non-telegraphic punches with a focus pad.
32:02Have your partner hold the pad at different heights and then jerk the pad quickly when you attempt to jab.
32:30Another exercise that you can include in your training is the clapping game.
32:35Stand about a full arm's length plus another four inches away from him.
32:39Let your partner keep his hands about a foot apart in front of him.
32:43The idea is to throw a punch to his face or body straight between his hands.
32:48It is a test as to whether you can hit the target before he can clap your hand.
32:52If he can't, then let him reduce the distance between his hands to about six inches.
32:57Yes!
33:06As the assailant attacks, counter with a quick and powerful sidekick to the forward knee.
33:11Follow through with a back fist.
33:26Before the attacker can throw a punch, counter with a sidekick to his knee,
33:30then follow up with a kick to the groin.
33:43With no warning, the attacker rushes towards you and attempts a kick to your midsection.
33:48Step back, block the kick, and as soon as the attacker places his foot down,
33:52execute a sidekick to the back of his knee.
33:55Follow up with a chokehold.
34:18The assailant approaches you in a crouch, an unusual way of attacking.
34:22From an on-guard position, deliver a sidekick to the side of the forward knee
34:26causing him to drop.
34:28Follow up by dragging him down.
34:31Finish off with a heel stop to the face.
34:33Once the assailant is down on the ground, you have to make sure he doesn't retaliate.
34:37So always follow through with other techniques.
34:52Against a full swing, you have more time to counter because the assailant greatly telegraphs his movement.
34:58Before the punch can reach you, lean back and execute a sidekick to his chest.
35:13When the assailant attempts a rear right hook, parry the block to the side of your head
35:17and immediately follow with a finger jab to the eyes.
35:30As the assailant attempts a rear right hook, rotate your hips clockwise,
35:34quickly placing your weight evenly on both feet,
35:37and execute a finger jab to the eyes without blocking the attack.
35:41Your striking hand and change of position will cause the assailant's punch to miss its mark.
35:50Like the full swing attack, you have more time to counter against someone trying to tackle you.
35:55As the assailant attempts to tackle your legs, from the on-guard position,
36:00step forward and deliver a front kick to the attacker's face.
36:13As the assailant attacks with a tackle, slide your rear foot back slightly to brace yourself.
36:19Grab the assailant's neck in a headlock as he comes toward you.
36:22Slide your front foot backward and pin the assailant to the ground while maintaining a chokehold.
36:27Be sure to execute the pin quickly, or the attacker could make a strike to your groin.
36:43An assailant seizes your chest with his left hand and attempts to knee your groin.
36:48Grab the assailant's left arm and simultaneously execute a right-bottom fist strike to his groin.
36:54Then thrust your left hand to his throat.
36:57While shoving his throat back, grab his sleeve with your other hand, pulling the assailant clockwise and down.
37:04Finish him off with a stomp to the face.
37:25The assailant grabs your arm with both of his hands.
37:28Quickly face him and deliver a low crescent kick to the knee, followed by a punch to the face, and
37:34a leg sweep and stomp to the head.
37:36The crescent kick may not be powerful when you first attempt it, but constant practice on the heavy bag can
37:42make it into a valuable and strong kick.
38:02An assailant grabs your arm with both of his hands.
38:05Lean back and quickly deliver a low side kick to the attacker's knee.
38:14An assailant grabs your right arm.
38:17Before the attacker can throw his punch, pull your right arm back, twist your hips, and deliver a left cross
38:23without hesitation.
38:27Attacking you from behind, the assailant locks your right arm and keeps your head in a grip.
38:32Using the attacking momentum, turn your body toward your locked arm counterclockwise, forcing the assailant off balance.
38:40While keeping the assailant's arm locked under your body, execute a reverse elbow strike to his groin, head, butt, and
38:48knee to the side.
39:01The attacker puts a reverse wrist lock on your right hand.
39:05Immediately retaliate with a side kick to his midsection, and a spinning back kick to the same section of his
39:11body with your other foot.
39:12When someone grabs you with a reverse lock, you have to counter instantly before he can pin you to the
39:18ground.
39:26An assailant grabs your chest with both hands.
39:29Lock the attacker's arm while simultaneously executing a right cross to his face.
39:39An assailant grabs your chest with both hands.
39:42Lock the assailant's arm, then follow through with a forward elbow strike to the attacker's face.
39:48The important movement in this section is to trap the assailant's right hand and attack before he can do damage
39:54to you.
39:59An attacker sneaks up behind you and grabs your shirt.
40:03Quickly turn your torso and apply a back fist to the attacker's face.
40:13The assailant grabs you with a back arm lock that is difficult to get out of.
40:17The quickest way is to execute a back kick to his groin.
40:27The assailant grabs your chest and attempts to punch your face.
40:31Grab the assailant's wrist with your left hand and at the same time deliver a punch straight to his jaw.
40:37Follow up with a trip and takedown and a knee to his face.
40:40Instead of a punch to the assailant's jaw, you can also use an effective finger jab.
41:02The assailant attempts to choke you, grab his arm and step out to the side and deliver a front kick
41:07to his groin and a kick to the head.
41:25An attacker has a strong headlock on you.
41:27Quickly deliver a finger jab to his eyes with your free hand.
41:31Then, control the attacker with a wrist lock.
41:44An assailant has a headlock on you.
41:47Place the hand that's behind the attacker's back over his shoulder and claw his face.
41:51Again, control him with a wrist lock.
42:05The attacker has the same headlock on you.
42:08Turn your body toward the attacker and with your free hand execute a blow to his groin.
42:13Whenever you're caught in a headlock, you must act fast with a counter or else the attacker will drag you
42:19to the ground, making it harder to free yourself.
42:24An assailant sneaks up behind you and strangles you with his left arm, grabbing your right hand.
42:30Before the assailant can bend you backward in a vulnerable position, move quickly to your right and apply an elbow
42:36strike to the assailant's exposed rib area and stomp on his feet.
42:43An attacker grabs you from behind and puts you in a tight bear hug, pinning both of your arms.
42:48Immediately, execute a left-hand strike to his groin and headbutt to his face.
43:00The assailant has a bear hug around you, but your arms are free.
43:04Instead of attempting to free yourself from the grip, just deliver a reverse elbow strike to his face.
43:09Then, continue with an arm lock.
43:30The assailant grabs you from the front and lifts you off your feet.
43:34Swing your foot back and deliver an upward knee blow to the assailant's groin.
43:47The assailant grabs you from the rear and lifts you off your feet.
43:51Swing back your head to bang it against the assailant's face.
43:54Another option is to execute a blow to his groin with either of your free hands.
43:59You have more time to act in this situation because the attacker can't do anything to you as long as
44:04he keeps hugging you.
44:10The assailant has a frontal headlock on you.
44:13Before he can drop you to the ground, take aim and throw an uppercut to his groin.
44:18Sometimes in close quarters fighting, you may end up in a headlock.
44:22The most important thing is to counter quickly so you are not pinned to the ground.
44:37And the assailant swings a club at you, stepping back just enough to let the club miss you, quickly retaliate
44:43with a sidekick to the body.
44:59As the attacker swings his club at you, duck under the blow and block his arm to prevent another swing.
45:06Immediately counter with a knee to his midsection.
45:27The assailant attempts to jab you with his club.
45:30Block the jab and simultaneously deliver a strike to his head and throat.
45:35Then maintain an arm lock and disarm the opponent.
45:47As the attacker attempts a swing at you, move swiftly towards him, jamming his arm with your front hand and
45:54deliver a body punch.
45:56Trip him to the ground and follow up with a kick.
46:07If you're at a farther distance, duck underneath the staff.
46:11As it passes over your head, quickly counter with a hook kick to the stomach and a front kick to
46:16the head.
46:34When the assailant thrusts his staff at you, sidestep the thrust and seize the staff.
46:44And quickly execute a front kick to his hand.
47:03Once the weapon is released, launch a side kick into his midsection.
47:19The attacker faces you with a knife.
47:21Before he attacks, fake a finger jab toward his face, which will cause him to react.
47:27Swiftly execute a low side kick to his knee.
47:30Follow up with a kick to the head.
47:52As the attacker swings the knife at you, quickly evade the assault by stepping back.
47:57Burst forward with a low side kick.
48:04An assailant points a gun against your back.
48:07Quickly turn your body counterclockwise, using your arm to parry his hand so you'll be away from the line of
48:13fire.
48:14Attack his neck and maintain a hold on his wrist and follow up with blows to the face while disarming
48:20the weapon.
48:45Again move away from the line of fire while attacking his throat and seizing his wrist to disarm it.
49:07While sitting in a chair, you are approached by an assailant.
49:11Without warning, he rushes you and you should immediately, without hesitation, deliver a front thrust kick to the groin without
49:18getting up.
49:27While sitting in a chair, you are surprised by an assailant who grabs your shirt with both hands.
49:33Quickly counter with a right punch to his groin.
49:53While sitting in a chair, an assailant surprises you from the rear by applying a headlock.
49:59Immediately grab his hair with the arm closest to his head and deliver a finger jab to his eyes.
50:19You are pinned by an assailant who has a headlock on you and has your right hand pinned.
50:24With your free hand, go for his eyes, then pin him with your legs and apply a wrist lock.
50:47You are lying flat on your back with the attacker choking you.
50:51Grasp one of his wrists to relieve the choke pressure and with your other hand execute a finger jab.
50:58Follow up with counter blows to his groin until he releases his grip.
