00:06This video presentation is dedicated to Master Kim Sun Park, whose oriental wisdom greatly
00:12influenced the formation of Han Mudo. This tape is also dedicated to US Secret Service agent,
00:18Master Instructor Kim Tate, for his dedication and professionalism in the protection of the
00:23President of the United States. The World Han Mudo Association expresses great gratitude to
00:29Master Instructor, Jamie Serio, for unfailing dedication in the making of this video.
00:36About 5,000 years ago, the legendary founder of Korea, Than Koon, established the first
00:41tribal nation, which existed up until the first century BC. During this time, the tribal martial
00:48arts became widely practiced. From the first century BC through the 10th century AD, warriors
00:55from the three kingdoms, Silla, Pak Chae, and Koguryo, participated in military martial arts.
01:03This period became known as the Golden Age of Korean martial arts. From the 11th century through
01:09the 14th century, the warriors in the Korea Kingdom practiced martial arts in order to defend
01:15themselves against foreign invaders, such as the Chinese, Mongolians, Japanese, and Manchurians.
01:21From the 15th century until the early 20th century during the Lee Kingdom, Confucian scholars dominated
01:28Korean politics. Martial arts masters did not enjoy the same prestige that they had in previous
01:35dynasties. Due to these changes in Korean traditions, a few masters taught these martial arts techniques
01:42to their loyal students. Following World War II, martial arts became popular in Korea once again. Korean martial artists
01:50not only practiced in Korea, but began to practice and teach their martial arts techniques all around the world.
01:57In 1953, Dr. Kim graduated from Dongton Elementary School near Seoul and entered East Seoul High School.
02:05There he began to train in Yudou and Bisoul, under the instruction of Grand Master Songkwang Sub.
02:12Bisoul is a form of traditional self-defense. Later, many of these techniques were incorporated into Hapkido.
02:20Two to four hours practice daily was standard in those days. In 1957, while attending senior high school,
02:27Dr. Kim received his second degree black belt and his high school team won the Seoul National Yudo Championship.
02:34During the same year, Dr. Kim received the best technical award from the Korean Student Yudo Association.
02:42In October of 1957, Dr. Kim met Hyunja Park, who later became his wife. She has supported his involvement in
02:51martial arts
02:52from the very beginning of their relationship and continues that support to the present.
02:58In his senior year of high school, Dr. Kim served as chairman of the disciplinary committee in the Student Government
03:04Association.
03:06After graduating from East Seoul High School in 1958, Dr. Kim entered the National University of Pusan.
03:13During his college years from 1958 to 1962, Dr. Kim served as an instructor of self-defense for the 8th
03:21United States Army in the Pusan Area Command.
03:23In the fall of 1962, Dr. Kim won the Southern National Yudo Championship.
03:30In February of 1963, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Korean Marine Corps and served as combat instructor
03:38for the Korean Marine Corps.
03:41While Dr. Kim attended the National University of Pusan, he trained in Kongsudo and Yudo under the instruction of Grand
03:48Master Yun Yongjo at the Yeonmukwon Institute.
03:52He later trained in Taekwondo under Master Chaicheng He and Grand Master Kang Soo Jung.
03:59Dr. Kim first trained in Korean self-defense during high school under Grand Master Songkwang Sub from 1953 to 1958.
04:08In 1962, he trained in Hapkido under Grand Master Wan Kuang Fa and in 1968 under Master Lee Park.
04:17In 1987, he also received Hapkido training under Grand Master Jihan Jae.
04:23From 1968 to 1978, Dr. Kim served as president of the American Hapkido Association.
04:30During his term as president, Dr. Kim gave many demonstrations at major national martial arts tournaments and taught Hapkido to
04:38thousands of students at Louisiana State University.
04:41In 1974, Dr. Kim met Grand Master In Hyuk Seo and trained in Kooksul under him until 1987.
04:50Dr. Kim served as secretary general of the World Kooksul Association from 1977 through 1987.
04:57And also was named the co-chairman of the World Kooksul Championship and seminar held in Busan, Korea in 1982.
05:06During the 1980s, Dr. Kim was widely researching other styles of martial arts.
05:12Dr. Kim wrote three books.
05:15Kooksul, Philosophy of Masters, and Hapkido.
05:18The Hapkido book was written with the assistance of Grand Master Jihan Jae.
05:24Dr. Kim trained in Korean Kum Do under Grand Master Sho Sung Jung, chief instructor of the Central Dojang of
05:32the Korean Kum Do Association.
05:34Dr. Kim trained in Ship Pao Ki under Grand Master Kim Young Suk, who's the president of the Korean Ship
05:41Pao Ki Association.
05:42And also under Master Pak Woo Hyun.
05:46He also learned traditional Taekyoon under Grand Master Sun Dook Ki, who is the Korean national human treasure number 76.
05:56Dr. Kim further expanded his knowledge of ki, breathing techniques, under Grand Master Kwon Tai Hoon and Grand Master Lee
06:04Hyun Hyun.
06:06With the accumulation of knowledge by Dr. Kim in the last 40 years in Korean martial arts, and by the
06:12encouragement of his previous teachers,
06:15Grand Master Im Hyuk Seo, the founder of Kooksul Wan, and Grand Master Ji Han Jae, the founder of modern
06:22Hapkido.
06:23Dr. Kim organized Han Mudo in 1989.
06:29The demonstration you are seeing is the application of weapons techniques you are going to learn from this tape.
