00:43up until the first century bc during this time the tribal martial arts became widely practiced
00:50from the first century bc through the tenth century a.d warriors from the three kingdoms
00:56sila pak che and koguryo participated in military martial arts this period became known as the golden
01:05age of korean martial arts from the 11th century through the 14th century the warriors in the korea
01:12kingdom practiced martial arts in order to defend themselves against foreign invaders such as the
01:18chinese mongolians japanese and manchurians from the 15th century until the early 20th century during the
01:25league kingdom confusion scholars dominated korean politics martial arts masters did not enjoy the
01:32same prestige that they had in previous dynasties due to these changes in korean traditions a few
01:39masters taught these martial arts techniques to their loyal students following world war ii martial arts
01:46became popular in korea once again korean martial artists not only practiced in korea but began to practice
01:53and teach their martial arts techniques all around the world in 1953 dr kim graduated from dongton
02:01elementary school near seoul and entered east seoul high school there he began to train in yudo and b
02:08sul under the instruction of grandmaster sang kwang sub b sul is a form of traditional self-defense
02:15later many of these techniques were incorporated into hopkido
02:19two to four hours practice daily was standard in those days in 1957 while attending senior high
02:27school dr kim received his second degree black belt and his high school team won the seoul national
02:33judo championship during the same year dr kim received the best technical award from the korean student judo
02:40association in october of 1957 dr kim met hyunja park who later became his wife she has supported his
02:50involvement in martial arts from the very beginning of their relationship and continues that support to the
02:56present in his senior year of high school dr kim served as chairman of the disciplinary committee in the
03:04student government association after graduating from east seoul high school in 1958 dr kim entered the national
03:11university of pusan during his college years from 1958 to 1962 dr kim served as an instructor of self-defense
03:20for the eighth united states army in the pusan area command in the fall of 1962 dr kim won the
03:28southern
03:28international judo championship in february of 1963 he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the korean marine
03:35corps and served as combat instructor for the korean marine corps while dr kim attended the national
03:43university of pusan he trained in kong sudo and judo under the instruction of grandmaster yunyong jo
03:50at the yunmukwan institute he later trained in taekwondo under master chaicheng he and grandmaster kang sujong
04:00dr kim first trained in korean self-defense during high school under grandmaster sungguang sub from 1953 to
04:071958 in 1962 he trained in hapkido under grandmaster wonkwangfa and in 1968 under master lee park
04:16in 1987 he also received hapkido training under grandmaster jihan j from 1968 to 1978 dr kim served as
04:27president of the american hapkido association during his term as president dr kim gave many demonstrations
04:34at major national martial arts tournaments and taught hapkido to thousands of students at louisiana state
04:40university in 1974 dr kim met grandmaster in hyuk so and trained in kooksul under him until 1987
04:50dr kim served as secretary general of the world kooksul association from 1977 through 1987
04:57and also was named the co-chairman of the world kooksul championship and seminar held in pusan korea in 1982
05:06during the 1980s dr kim was widely researching other styles of martial arts dr kim wrote three books
05:14kooksul philosophy of masters and hapkido the hapkido book was written with the assistance of
05:22grandmaster jihan jay dr kim trained in korean kumdo under grandmaster sho sung yung chief instructor of the
05:30central dojang of the korean kumdo association dr kim trained in ship pao ki under grandmaster kim yung
05:38suk who's the president of the korean ship pao ki association and also under master pak wu hyun
05:46he also learned traditional taikyun under grandmaster sun duk ki who is the korean national human treasure number 76
