01:24Toward the later stages of Jit Kune Do development
01:27Becoming Lee's last major private student
01:31And considered his protege
01:37Jit Kune Do never intended to have any limitations
01:41And it continued to be modified and improved
01:44By the late Bruce Lee
01:50Although this video can never replace the actual teaching and knowledge that Bruce Lee possessed
01:55It will enhance you, the serious martial artist
01:59In developing your skill in fighting
02:10This video will consist of warm-ups, basic exercises, on-guard positions, footwork, power training, speed training, and self-defense
02:19techniques
02:31To warm-up, select light, easy exercises to loosen your muscles and to prepare them for more strenuous work
02:38Besides improving your performance, warming-up exercises are necessary to prevent injury to your muscles
02:44No smart athlete will use his hand or leg violently without first warming up carefully
02:51These light exercises should dictate as closely as possible the ensuing more strenuous types of movements
03:34This video will show up early, while not the tapping-up size improvement
03:34Like Apple Watchedniej's last major objects
03:35For the topե
03:35I want you to feel funded by supplying you
09:47To toughen your midsection, get a medicine ball and have someone drop it on your abdomen.
10:13To vary your exercise, you can also have someone throw it directly to your midsection.
10:17Let the ball hit your ball, let the ball hit your ball.
10:20Let the ball hit your ball hit your ball hit your ball hit your body before catching it.
10:21One, it's it's not a ball hit your ball hit, but you can do it.
10:38You can use your ball hit your ball hit your ball hit your ball hit your knees.
10:38Another way to strengthen the midsection is to have someone punch your stomach with boxing blow.
10:43Start off lightly and have them slowly increase the power of the blows.
10:55The most effective JKD stance for attacking and defending is the on-guard position.
11:01This semi-crouched stance is perfect for fighting because your body is sturdy at all times in
11:07a comfortably balanced position to attack, counter or defend without any forewarning movement.
11:13It provides your body with complete ease relaxation but at the same time allows quick reaction
11:19time.
11:19It creates an illusion or poker body to your opponent concealing your intended movements.
11:27It is important to position your arms, feet and head.
11:31Pay close attention to the position of both hands.
11:33The leading hand should be placed slightly lower than shoulder height.
11:38From the southpaw stance, the chin and shoulder should meet halfway, the right shoulder raised
11:44an inch or two and the chin dropped about the same distance.
11:58At this position, the muscles and bone structure are in the best possible alignment, protecting
12:03the point of the chin.
12:05In close infighting, the head is held vertically with the edge of the chin pressed to the collar
12:10bone and one side of the chin is tucked to the lead shoulder.
12:14Only in rare extreme defensive maneuvers should the point of the chin be tucked into the lead
12:19shoulder.
12:35Both fighters are standing in the on guard position incorrectly.
12:39The person on the left has his right foot too wide and reveals too much of his body.
12:43The person on the right has his right foot too far to his left, restricting his movement and keeping him
12:49off balance.
12:53Good form is essential in your stance.
12:56It allows you to perform in the most efficient manner with a minimum of lost movement and wasted energy.
13:02Balance is the most important aspect of the on guard stance.
13:06Without proper balance at all times, you will lose body control in the middle of an action.
13:11Balance is only attained with correct body alignment.
13:15Your feet should be directly under your body, spread apart at a comfortable medium distance,
13:20the space of a natural step, so you are braced and not standing on just one point.
13:25The weight of your body can be evenly balanced on both feet or slightly on your lead foot.
13:36Both of your arms and shoulders must be relaxed and loose to whip out and snap your fists like
13:41thrust from a rapier.
13:43Keep both hands in constant weaving motion and always keep yourself covered while doing it.
13:48The lead hand should be constantly moving, flickering in and out like a snake's tongue ready to strike.
13:55This threatening motion keeps your opponent in a bewildering plight.
13:59Remember, if you tense up, you lose your balance, timing and flexibility, which are essential
14:04to all proficient fighters.
14:11To advance, do not cross or hop, but shuffle your feet.
14:15At the outset, you will feel clumsy and slow, but as you keep practicing this movement daily,
14:20you will develop your speed and grace.
14:23To do the forward shuffle, stand in the on-guard position and move forward cautiously.
14:28Slide your front foot forward about a half step, widening the space between your feet just
14:33for a second as you slide your rear foot forward.
14:36When the rear foot is moved forward, you should be at the original position.
14:40Then, to advance further forward, repeat the process.
14:56In retreating or moving backward, you just reverse your movement.
15:00The basis behind the backward shuffle is like the advance.
15:03From the on-guard position, slide your rear foot backward about a half a step, widening
15:08the space between your feet just for a split second as you slide your front foot backward.
15:13When the front foot is in place, you should be in the on-guard position and perfectly balanced.
15:19Unlike the advance shuffle, your weight would shift slightly for just an instant to your rear
15:23foot when you slide your front foot backward.
15:25To retreat further, continue to repeat the process.
15:33From the on-guard position, with your front foot, step forward a few inches.
15:38As soon as you glide your front foot, quickly slide your back foot almost to replace your
15:43front foot's position.
15:44Unless you move your front foot instantly, the rear foot cannot be planted properly because
15:49the front foot will be in its way.
15:54But the purpose of this movement is to move your body quickly to a distance eight feet
15:59or more that requires several steps.
16:08The footwork for the quick retreat or rapid backward movement is almost similar to the
16:13quick advance except you move in the opposite direction.
16:17Unlike the quick advance, you do not have to slide your foot a few inches.
16:21It is just one quick motion, but your body should be in alignment and in balance.
16:26The front foot, like the quick advance, initiates the movement with the rear foot following
16:30just a split second later.
16:43The forward burst is the quickest JKD movement.
16:46movement.
16:46It is utilized to penetrate deeply to attack with a kick or to counter an attack.
16:52Like the quick advance movement, it is a deep lunge from the on-guard position.
16:56By using a sweeping motion with the lead hand, momentum is created propelling you forward.
17:12Sidestepping is used to avoid straight forward assaults and to produce openings for a counter-strike
17:17when the opponent least expects it.
17:19To sidestep to the left from the on-guard position, move your left foot toward the left
17:23a few inches.
17:24For a split instant, your shoulder sways toward your left and your weight shifts on the rear
17:28foot.
17:29Your shoulder automatically realigns when you quickly slide your right foot in the exact
17:34manner and resume the on-guard position.
17:45To sidestep to the right, the move is almost the same, except that you lead with the front
17:50foot and move toward your right.
18:06Using a long staff, have an opponent aim and thrust it toward you.
18:10In order to avoid the edge of the staff, you will be forced to either sidestep to the right
18:14or left.
18:15Try to get used to the feeling of moving side to side while maintaining your balance.
18:20Slightly leaning the body while sidestepping can contribute to avoiding a blow.
18:37Power in hitting is not based strictly on strength.
18:40Power isn't generated by your contractile muscles, but from the impetus and speed of your arm or
18:46foot.
18:46In JKD, you do not hit by just swinging your arms.
18:50Your whole body should participate in the impetus, your hips, shoulders, feet and arms.
18:55The punch originates not from the shoulder, but from the center of the body.
18:59The inertia of your punch should be a straight line in front of your nose.
19:12From an outspread position of your fingers and thumb, roll your fingertips into your palm,
19:16and then overlap your thumb tightly over your clenched fingers.
19:20The tip of the thumb extends to the center of your middle finger.
19:26One of the best ways to learn to power punch is to use your hips.
19:30To do this, tie a string to a piece of paper and hang it from the ceiling to about chest
19:35height.
19:35Stand about a foot away with both of your feet parallel to the paper, keeping both loosely
19:41clenched fists in front of your chest, elbows hanging freely at your sides.
19:45Bend both knees slightly and twist your body back and forth, pivoting on the balls of your
19:51feet, letting your hips initiate the rotating motion.
19:55Simultaneously, as your body is rotating, raise your elbow to your shoulder height just in
20:00time to apply an elbow strike to the target.
20:03It is very important that your hips rotate slightly ahead of your shoulders to obtain maximum
20:08power.
20:09Once you feel comfortable with this exercise, step back about two feet and use your fist,
20:14rest, keeping the same body position with good balance.
20:32you don't want to have your hands.
20:55Once you have grasped this way of hitting, you can begin to work on your power blows
21:00by hitting the heavy bags.
21:02Facing the bag, bend your knees slightly, rotate your hips, and your weight should shift toward
21:08the front just before you throw a punch.
21:10If you can master this punch with the right timing by rotating your hips, you'll have
21:15a punch much more powerful than a jab.
21:19Remember to punch through the bag instead of just the surface.
22:06Besides the heavy bag, there are other types of equipment that will supplement your hunting
22:10training.
22:11The focus pad is ideal for precision punching and increasing your speed.
22:38The shield is more solid than the focus pad and will not give in, thus giving the puncher
22:43a completely different feeling upon contact.
22:53The punches are not thrown from the hips in JKD, but from the chest.
22:58The delivery should be straight and not with a twist of your hand.
23:01If you twist your hand, the knuckles will align horizontally at impact, but if you deliver
23:07straight out, it will hit the target either vertically or obliquely.
23:11Consequently, it is important that you strengthen and toughen the three knuckles that make impact.
23:41One of the most helpful tools that you can incorporate in your training schedule is the round steel
23:46cylinder. The cylinder, weighing about a pound, fits snugly in the hand. You can quickly
23:52improve your delivery of punches by taking advantage of this exercise.
23:57Holding a pair of these cylinders in each hand, stand with your feet parallel and punch directly in front of
24:03your nose several times.
24:05The idea behind this is to develop the snapping or whipping blows. If you keep your body and arms relaxed,
24:12you will notice that your punches will automatically snap back at the end of your delivery.
24:17As you punch, the heaviness in your hands helps you develop speed and power in your blows.
24:23After a while, you will learn to punch with heaviness in your blows, even without the weight.
24:29The secret behind this is to concentrate or pretend that your empty hands still contain the cylinders as you throw
24:35the punches.
24:59To execute a powerful side kick, stand with your feet apart and parallel to each other.
25:04Lift your right foot about 12 inches from the floor as you balance on your left.
25:09Stomp your right foot straight down with force and let it snap upward about an inch from the floor.
25:15Like punching with the flowing energy, here again, you should concentrate with heaviness in your foot.
25:22For the extra power, twist your hips just an instant before the full extension of your leg, so it gives
25:28you the twisting force in your kick.
25:30Then snap your foot at the full extension for the whipping effect.
25:58Then snap your foot at the full extension for the whipping effect.
26:07After you have the knack of doing the side kick, you are prepared to kick the heavy bag.
26:12From the on-guard position, do the forward burst and aim your blow directly at the center of the bag.
26:18At impact, your foot should land horizontally on the bag, not obliquely.
26:23The sound at impact should be a loud cracking thud like a whip if you have kicked through the bag
26:28and snapped your foot at the end.
26:30If there is more push than hit, the sound will be a weak thud.
26:34In both kicks, there is force exerted, except the hit will do the damage and the push will just knock
26:40the opponent down innocuously.
26:57Although the front kick is not as powerful as the side kick, you can increase the explosiveness of your kick
27:03by using your hips.
27:04Instead of relying only on the snap of your foot from the knee, try jerking your hips forward just an
27:10instant before contact.
27:12Timing of this movement is very important and difficult to do.
27:15But by using your body instead of just your leg, you can add much more power to this kick.
27:43Like the front kick, the inverted kick is delivered in a similar snapping motion, except that your foot is angled
27:49out toward your opponent.
27:50Opponent's body and contact is made with the top of the foot.
28:07Opposite of the hook kick, the inverted kick can be targeted to the legs, the groin and the head of
28:13your opponent.
28:37Lift your lead knee until your thigh is horizontal.
28:41Your leg below the knee should be hung loosely pointing to the floor at about 45 degrees.
28:46Your weight should be completely on the rear foot with the knee slightly bent and your body leaning backwards.
28:53Then pivot on the ball of your rear foot, which automatically induces your hips to rotate.
28:58Finally, snap your foot from the knee, which straightens the supporting leg.
29:03The hook kick is performed with just one motion from the time your foot leaves the foot.
29:08The hook kick is focused generally on the upper line from the waist to the head.
29:33The back fist punch is not the quickest, nor is it too strong because you are unable to utilize the
29:40total body movement.
29:41But it is one blow in which you can fully apply the whipping or snapping motion to increase your speed
29:46at impact.
29:50The back fist is delivered from shoulder height, but can also be used as a surprise attack and be launched
29:56anywhere from your waistline to your shoulder.
29:58It is very difficult to block once you have acquired the non-telegraphic moves.
30:20The leading finger jab is the fastest attacking weapon available to you.
30:24It is fast in reaching your target because it travels only a short distance.
30:29Accuracy and speed is essential in this technique because you focus your aim at the eyes of your enemy.
30:35The jab is a dangerous weapon to the adversary because it does so much damage and is very difficult to
30:41defend against.
30:42Since you do not clench your fist, but have your fingers extended, you add several more inches to your reach.
30:49To protect yourself from damaging your fingers, learn to form your hand properly.
30:54Align the tip of your hand by slightly bending the longer fingers to adjust to the shorter and tuck your
31:00thumb in.
31:01Your hand should resemble a spear.
31:04Speed relies on economy of motion, and the jab is one technique with which you have the opportunity to experiment.
31:10The jab, like all the blows in JKD, must be thrust forward without any retracting motion.
31:20The trick in non-telegraphic moves is to relax your body and arms, but keep them weaving in a slight
31:25motion.
31:25Whip out your hand loosely so your shoulders don't tense, and clench your fist just an instant before contact as
31:32you snap it.
31:33You have to keep a poker face while facing your opponent.
31:36A slight twitch or expression on your face may trigger your intention and warn your opponent.
31:56You can train in non-telegraphic punches with a focus pad.
32:00Have your partner hold the pad at different heights and then jerk the pad quickly when you attempt to jab.
32:28Another exercise that you can include in your training is the clapping game.
32:33Stand about a full arms length plus another four inches away from him.
32:37Let your partner keep his hands about a foot apart in front of him.
32:41The idea is to throw a punch to his face or body straight between his hands.
32:46It is a test as to whether you can hit the target before he can clap your hands.
32:50If he can't, then let him reduce the distance between his hands to about six inches.
33:04As the assailant attacks, counter with a quick and powerful side kick to the forward knee.
33:09Follow through with a back fist.
33:24Before the attacker can throw a punch, counter with a side kick to his knee, then follow up with a
33:29kick to the groin.
33:41With no warning, the attacker rushes towards you and attempts a kick to your midsection.
33:46Step back, block the kick, and as soon as the attacker places his foot down, execute a side kick to
33:52the back of his knee.
33:53Follow up with a choke hold.
34:16The assailant approaches you in a crouch, an unusual way of attacking.
34:20From an on-guard position, deliver a side kick to the side of the forward knee, causing him to drop.
34:26Follow up by dragging him down.
34:29Finish off with a heel stop to the face.
34:31Once the assailant is down on the ground, you have to make sure he doesn't retaliate.
34:35So always follow through with other techniques.
34:50Against a full swing, you have more time to counter because the assailant greatly telegraphs his move.
34:56Before the punch can reach you, lean back and execute a side kick to his chest.
35:11When the assailant attempts a rear right hook, parry the block to the side of your head and immediately follow
35:17with a finger jab to the eyes.
35:28As the assailant attempts a rear right hook, rotate your hips clockwise, quickly placing your weight evenly on both feet,
35:35and execute a finger jab to the eyes without blocking the attack.
35:39Your striking hand and change of position will cause the assailant's punch to miss its mark.
35:48Like the full swing attack, you have more time to counter against someone trying to tackle you.
35:53As the assailant attempts to tackle your legs, from the on-guard position, step forward and deliver a front kick
36:00to the attacker's face.
36:11As the assailant attacks with a tackle, slide your rear foot back slightly to brace yourself.
36:17Grab the assailant's neck in a headlock as he comes toward you.
36:20Slide your front foot backward and pin the assailant to the ground while maintaining a choke hold.
36:25Be sure to execute the pin quickly or the attacker could make a strike to your groin.
36:41An assailant seizes your chest with his left hand and attempts to knee your groin.
36:46Grab the assailant's left arm and simultaneously execute a right bottom fist strike to his groin.
36:51Then thrust your left hand to his throat.
36:55While shoving his throat back, grab his sleeve with your other hand, pulling the assailant clockwise and down.
37:02Finish him off with a stomp to the face.
37:23The assailant grabs your arm with both of his hands, quickly facing and deliver a low crescent kick to the
37:30knee, followed by a punch to the face and a leg sweep and stomp to the head.
37:34The crescent kick may not be powerful when you first attempt it, but constant practice on the heavy bag can
37:40make it into a valuable and strong kick.
38:00An assailant grabs your arm with both of his hands, lean back and quickly deliver a low side kick to
38:06the attacker's knee.
38:12An assailant grabs your right arm before the attacker can throw his punch, pull your right arm back, twist your
38:19hips and deliver a left cross without hesitation.
38:25Attacking you from behind, the assailant locks your right arm and keeps your head in a grip.
38:31Using the attacking momentum, turn your body toward your locked arm counterclockwise, forcing the assailant off balance.
38:38While keeping the assailant's arm locked under your body, execute a reverse elbow strike to his groin, head, butt and
38:46knee to the side.
38:59The attacker puts a reverse wrist lock on your right hand.
39:03Immediately retaliate with a side kick to his midsection and a spinning back kick to the same section of his
39:09body with your other foot.
39:10When someone grabs you with a reverse lock, you have to counter instantly before he can pin you to the
39:16ground.
39:24An assailant grabs your chest with both hands. Lock the attacker's arm while simultaneously executing a right cross to his
39:32face.
39:37An assailant grabs your chest with both hands. Lock the assailant's arm, then follow through with a forward elbow strike
39:45to the attacker's face.
39:46The important movement in this section is to trap the assailant's right hand and attack before he can do damage
39:52to you.
39:58An attacker sneaks up behind you and grabs your shirt. Quickly turn your torso and apply a back fist to
40:04the attacker's face.
40:11The assailant grabs you with a back arm lock that is difficult to get out of. The quickest way is
40:17to execute a back kick to his groin.
40:25The assailant grabs your chest and attempts to punch your face. Grab the assailant's wrist with your left hand and
40:32at the same time deliver a punch straight to his jaw.
40:35Follow up with a trip and takedown and a knee to his face. Instead of a punch to the assailant's
40:40jaw, you can also use an effective finger jab.
41:00An assailant attempts to choke you. Grab his arm and step out to the side and deliver a front kick
41:05to his groin and a kick to the head.
41:23An attacker has a strong headlock on you. Quickly deliver a finger jab to his eyes with your free hand.
41:29Then control the attacker with a wrist lock.
41:42An assailant has a headlock on you. Place the hand that's behind the attacker's back over his shoulder and claw
41:48his face. Again control him with a wrist lock.
42:03The attacker has the same headlock on you. Turn your body toward the attacker and with your free hand execute
42:09a blow to his groin.
42:11Whenever you're caught in a headlock, you must act fast with a counter or else the attacker will drag you
42:17to the ground making it harder to free yourself.
42:22An assailant sneaks up behind you and strangles you with his left arm, grabbing your right hand.
42:28Before the assailant can bend you backward in a vulnerable position, move quickly to your right and apply an elbow
42:34strike to the assailant's exposed rib area and stomp on his feet.
42:40An attacker grabs you from behind and puts you in a tight bear hug pinning both of your arms. Immediately
42:46execute a left hand strike to his groin and headbutt to his face.
42:58The assailant has a bear hug around you, but your arms are free. Instead of attempting to free yourself from
43:04the grip, just deliver a reverse elbow strike to his face. Then continue with an arm lock.
43:28The assailant grabs you from the front and lifts you off your feet. Swing your foot back and deliver an
43:34upward knee blow to the assailant's groin.
43:45The assailant grabs you from the rear and lifts you off your feet. Swing back your head to bang it
43:51against the assailant's face.
43:52Another option is to execute a blow to his groin with either of your free hands. You have more time
43:58to act in this situation because the attacker can't do anything to you as long as he keeps hugging you.
44:08The assailant has a frontal headlock on you. Before he can drop you to the ground, take aim and throw
44:14an uppercut to his groin.
44:15Sometimes in close quarters fighting, you may end up in a headlock. The most important thing is to counter quickly
44:23so you are not pinned to the ground.
44:35An assailant swings a club at you, stepping back just enough to let the club miss you, quickly retaliate with
44:42a side kick to the body.
44:58As the attacker swings his club at you, duck under the blow and block his arm to prevent another swing.
45:04Immediately counter with a knee to his midsection.
45:25The assailant attempts to jab you with his club. Block the jab and simultaneously deliver a strike to his head
45:32and throat. Then maintain an arm lock and disarm the opponent.
45:45As the attacker attempts a swing at you, move swiftly towards him, jamming his arm with your front hand and
45:52deliver a body punch. Trip him to the ground and follow up with a kick.
46:05If you are at a farther distance, duck underneath the staff. As it passes over your head, quickly counter with
46:12a hook kick to the stomach and a front kick to the head.
46:32When the assailant thrusts his staff at you, sidestep the thrust and seize the staff. Follow up with a side
46:38kick to his chest while still holding on to the staff and a round house kick to the head.
46:53When the assailant thrusts his staff at your midsection, again sidestep the thrust, seize the staff and quickly execute a
47:00front kick to his hand. Once the weapon is released, launch a side kick into his midsection.
47:17The attacker faces you with a knife. Before he attacks, fake a finger jab toward his face, which will cause
47:23him to react. Swiftly execute a low side kick to his knee. Follow up with a kick to the head.
47:50As the attacker swings the knife at you, quickly evade the assault by stepping back. Burst forward with a low
47:57side kick.
48:02An assailant points a gun against your back. Quickly turn your body counterclockwise, using your arm to parry his hand
48:09so you'll be away from the line of fire. Attack his neck and maintain a hold on his wrist and
48:16follow up with blows to the face while disarming the weapon.
48:43Again move away from the line of fire while attacking his throat and seizing his wrist to disarm.
48:49The attacker.
49:05While sitting in a chair, you are approached by an assailant. Without warning, he rushes you and you should immediately,
49:12without hesitation, deliver a front thrust kick to the groin without getting up.
