00:00Our guest on this program is Mr. Zinnur Büyükgöz, Mayor of Gebze Municipality in Kocaeli. Hello, Mr. Mayor.
00:07Hello, have a pleasant broadcast, and happy Ramadan.
00:12Thank you, Mr. President.
00:13Before asking the President how Ramadan was going,
00:16Of course, we are the Association of Agricultural Cities.
00:19Gebze is a very important industrial city, known both in Türkiye and worldwide.
00:26And you, as the Mayor of Gebze, are participating in our programs,
00:32You are providing tremendous support, thank you very much.
00:35Let's do the initial assessment that way, if you like.
00:38So when you say "Agricultural City," people think of a place where agriculture is produced, but...
00:42On the other hand, places where food is consumed can also be defined as Agricultural Cities.
00:48Do you agree with this description, Mr. President, and how would you describe Gebze?
00:53Of course, every product has a target consumer.
00:58Whether it's an industrial product or an agricultural product.
01:03Ultimately, a product is meaningless if it has no consumers.
01:11Therefore, if wheat is produced in Konya, there has to be someone who consumes it.
01:16But there is one point that needs to be clarified here.
01:23Gebze is a region that accounts for 16% of the exports of the Republic of Türkiye.
01:32Hocaeli has an export volume of 40 billion dollars.
01:37On the other hand, considering all these criteria, we are in the position of the second highest tax-paying city in the country after Istanbul.
01:47Of course, an industrial identity is emerging very strongly here.
01:51But on the other hand, Gebze also has an unknown side: agricultural production and livestock farming.
01:59When we look at the area in terms of scale.
02:02Because when we started our term in 2019, there were around 1500 greenhouses in Gebze.
02:12Today, production takes place in 3000 greenhouses in Gebze.
02:16Vegetable production is taking place.
02:18Furthermore, 18% of the district's 418 km² land is used for agriculture.
02:28He is involved in livestock farming.
02:30As a result, there is a strong agricultural and livestock sector on a large scale.
02:38For example, last year in Gebze, 23,500 head of cattle were sacrificed.
02:46So, of course, this also includes raising livestock.
02:50Therefore, agriculture, on the one hand, involves greenhouse production of around 3000 varieties, and on the other hand, fruit production, which over time naturally includes very valuable fruit types.
03:05For example, this is one of the best areas for growing Çavuşoğlu grapes.
03:10Or in Tavşanlı, during the peak cherry season, but unfortunately, some of our fruit types are affected by the intense industrialization at that time.
03:26It decreased a little.
03:27But greenhouse vegetable farming has increased even more.
03:34In terms of production capacity, the amount of production is much higher than in the past, but the types of products have changed.
03:42It has shifted from a fruit-heavy diet to a vegetable-heavy one.
03:49As I said, Gebze is indeed a center of industry, innovation, and information technology.
03:57There are around 96 R&D centers here.
04:02Gebze is home to many technology and innovation institutions such as Gebze Technical University, TÜBİTAK, Informatics Valley, TSE, TÜSİDE, and MAM.
04:14Therefore, in this sense, it is a dominant character because it doesn't just have representational capacity at the district level.
04:22It possesses a capability that is representative of the entire country.
04:27But as I said, in addition to these being the dominant characteristics, agriculture and...
04:41We are also protecting livestock farming.
04:43In this context, many different support efforts are also ongoing.
04:48Mr. President, Gebze is one of the rare cities that integrates an industrial city with an agricultural city and does so very successfully.
04:59How are you coordinating this, Mr. President?
05:03So what kind of support do you provide?
05:05And does this industry have a negative impact on agriculture?
05:10I just used the negative effect as an example in my sentence.
05:17So, the production of Çavuşoğlu grapes has decreased.
05:20Because ultimately, the industrial sector inevitably produces particles, and these particles harm fruit production.
05:35Or they are harming the open-field farming model.
05:39But this is not yet the case with the greenhouse farming model; production continues with the greenhouse farming model.
05:48In this sense, here in Kocaeli, with the driving force of our Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, many different agricultural projects are being carried out and supported.
06:03It is given.
06:04Our diesel and fertilizer subsidies are provided by our Metropolitan Municipality.
06:11As Gebze Municipality, we provide vegetable, fruit, and seedling distribution services.
06:17Then, our Metropolitan Municipality helps with greenhouse construction.
06:22Support for fodder crops, beekeeping, free-range chicken farming projects, and support for small-scale fishermen.
06:33Both our Metropolitan Municipality and Gebze Municipality provide free soil analysis services for producers, among many other essential aspects of agricultural production.
06:46We are continuing these support efforts.
06:48This is actually how we can achieve sustainability and true resilience in urban planning, as you mentioned earlier.
07:04definitely
07:04Industrial production, both for producers and consumers, and the fact that industrial production is carried out with an export target is inevitable.
07:18On the other hand, there is also the effort and endeavor to meet both the needs of the region and the needs of the environment by producing its own products and fruits.
07:31We will show you.
07:32As Gebze, we are not only self-sufficient or meeting our own local demand, but we are also currently meeting a certain portion of Istanbul's vegetable needs.
07:45We are also sourcing part of it from Gebze.
07:47Because vegetable cultivation is carried out in 3000 greenhouses to meet a strong demand.
07:56But this is also being transferred to Istanbul, which is the closest market and a strong market area.
08:04Therefore, here, in addition to achieving success in industry, as I mentioned earlier, we are sacrificing 24,500 head of cattle.
08:18It was cut off last year in Gebze.
08:20More than 50% of this met the needs of the Anatolian side of Istanbul.
08:27In that sense, we are also establishing a strong market relationship here.
08:36For example, I don't know, in some big cities, this number can't even be reached.
08:43We have granted permits for 154 slaughterhouses.
08:47Last year, we granted permits to 154 slaughterhouses for the sacrificial slaughter of animals.
08:51The sacrificial animal was slaughtered.
08:53As I said, the proximity and strength of the customer market ensures that our investments in that area have not been in vain.
09:09It helps us take our steps with strength.
09:13I can say this again, for the sake of reiteration, as our basic development model.
09:19We have a strong presence in industrial production in the manufacturing sector, but on the other hand, we also have a strong presence in agriculture, particularly in vegetable and fruit farming, as well as livestock breeding.
09:34When we consider it in terms of scale, when we consider it in terms of area scale, with this strong production we are benefiting both ourselves and a strong city like Istanbul.
09:45We are in a position to appeal to the market.
09:48Gevze is fortunate in this sense because we are also making pioneering strides in digital agriculture.
09:59A department specializing in soilless farming has been established at Gevze Technical University, and research is being conducted in that area.
10:09In addition, supporting agricultural production with drone technology, i.e., digital monitoring, drone spraying, drone disease detection, and controlling the amount of spraying with drones are also discussed.
10:27Improvements were made in areas such as determining the timing of the variety.
10:32In this sense, we in Gevze also have an advantage in using technology and innovation, so we can quickly put it into the field.
10:46We are able to reflect this.
10:48I hope we can be a role model for the country in this respect as well.
10:51That's wonderful. Mr. President, the district mayors we usually meet with talk about their declining populations and out-migration.
11:01In Gevze, I think the situation is the exact opposite.
11:05Yes, the opposite is true in Gevze.
11:10We continue to receive immigrants.
11:13The population has increased by 55,000 in the last 5 years.
11:18Therefore, our population growth continues.
11:24Here, part of the migration wave is coming to us from Istanbul.
11:32Some of them are from Anatolia.
11:33The rate of migration from Anatolia is decreasing day by day.
11:38However, people left Istanbul due to living conditions, traffic difficulties, the relocation of industry to Gebze, and the resulting fatigue from lost time commuting.
11:52Gebze receives migration from Istanbul.
11:55It also receives migration from Anatolia.
12:00But the majority of our migration has started to occur from Istanbul.
12:04What is the population of Gebze, Mr. Mayor?
12:08Currently, our Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) population is 415,000.
12:14But the sleeping population, the population that actually stays overnight, is 485,000.
12:23Of course, approximately 50,000 people of foreign origin also live among them.
12:31People from 51 countries around the world live in Gebze.
12:36There are approximately 50,000 people working in the industrial sector as engineers, technicians, or other skilled workers.
12:49From 51 countries around the world, this, as I said, clearly demonstrates the diversity of our workforce.
13:03Because there are 330 large-scale companies in Gebze that are 100% foreign-owned.
13:12The number of businesses that are 100% foreign-owned but employ 10 or more people is around 3300.
13:22An area employing 150,000 industrial workers.
13:28Therefore, the workforce here comes from many countries around the world.
13:35We can even say that there are establishments that provide ketchup services for Chinese cuisine.
13:41It is also a city that exports to 204 countries around the world.
13:49In that respect, Gebze has a strong identity in industry, already strong in innovation in production, and 10 times richer in terms of diversity.
14:06What a wonderful president!
14:08May God grant you strength and power, may God make things easy for you.
14:10How is Ramadan going, Mr. President?
14:13That's the last thing I asked him.
14:14Honestly, let's just say Ramadan this year is much more enjoyable than in previous years.
14:24The blessings of the season, in terms of comfort, allow people to fast more easily.
14:32On the other hand, today, in our schools, public institutions, or social activities, the expectations of society are much more realistic than they actually are.
14:51Exits started to be intercepted.
14:54For example, at the Kaaba, the chant of "Huder Allah" by the pilgrims has provided a significant source of motivation in general.
15:07In other matters like this, the warm attitude towards Ramadan in society already existed, but the enthusiasm and excitement have increased.
15:21It increased.
15:21Sometimes people say, "Where are those old Ramadans?" and we lament.
15:28Now, I think when we evaluate this year's Ramadan events and the variety of programs during Ramadan,
15:44In the future, today's young people will say, "Where are those old Ramadans?"
15:54Yes, Mr. President, thank you very much for the information you provided.
15:58Last time we were at the Çoban Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Yebze.
16:02We attended an iftar program there.
16:04You have projects there as well, I presume, Mr. President.
16:07We saw some things there that were more beautiful compared to the past.
16:10Some arrangements must have been made around him.
16:14We, as the municipality, have taken charge of the area surrounding the Çoban Mustafa Pasha Mosque.
16:20There was an empty plot of land in the northern part.
16:23We nationalized it as a municipality and removed the technical areas inside the mosque, the boiler room, and other functional parts.
16:35We prepared a technical room for them underground and transferred them there.
16:41We liberated the mosque.
16:43Beyond that, of course, through the Çoban Mustafa Pasha Foundation, we regularly serve morning soups there, even outside of Ramadan.
17:02Iftar meals are also served during Ramadan.
17:05But beyond that, using that as a starting point, they are providing two meals a day to 450 families.
17:17It also functions as a soup kitchen.
17:19Therefore, what some people sell for money in a restaurant setting, we serve daily meals to 2000 people in a soup kitchen setting, and take them home.
17:39We deliver as much as possible.
17:40Two meals a day are delivered to everyone's home, morning and evening.
17:45And that, as a blessing of that place, is reflected in life.
17:50That's wonderful. Mr. President, thank you very much for your time and the information you provided.
17:55Thank you very much. I also convey Uğur President's heartfelt greetings to you, Mr. President. Thank you very much.
17:59Thank you. Please convey our greetings in return.
18:02I hope you have a blessed Ramadan.
18:05God will allow us to reach the holiday. He will grant us the opportunity to celebrate the holiday in a truly joyful way.
18:09Amen. God willing. Thank you very much.
