00:00Hello, Amit. Thank you for calling us. Did we get your name right?
00:03First of all, yeah, Willard, you got it right. It's Amit, like a baseball Amit, so thank you for that.
00:09All right.
00:11Yeah, I just wanted to talk about the Mike Evans move. I mean, I think it's a good move, and
00:15I'm actually happy about it.
00:16I'm kind of annoyed that everybody's saying that, you know, we're getting too old.
00:20I think for our win-now team, this is good enough, but I am worried that we need to show
00:25up a tight end,
00:26as well as O-line, which is why I saw the Packers release that guy on Blake and I was
00:30in Elton Jenkins,
00:31which I would love to go after. But also, I know the boys in the morning were talking about it.
00:36Jalen Carter, I think that's something that we should go after, considering that, you know,
00:40the Rams just signed Trent McDuffie and the other guy from the Chiefs, him or Trey Hendrickson.
00:47The offseason is not done, and obviously, like, you know, we signed a left tackle.
00:49I just, I like the move so far, and frankly, I don't know what we're going to do in the
00:52draft.
00:52I know the Saints also signed Travis Etienne, so what's Alvin Kamara's situation looking like?
00:57Can we get somebody, I know it's going to be a lot of money, but can we get somebody to
00:59help McCaffrey this offseason?
01:01So far, still good. Day one, I'm pretty happy with the moves, and I just want to say that to
01:05you guys.
01:05Yeah, I mean, I think it's a good call. Here's one thing, because I heard the guys in the morning,
01:10too.
01:10Joe Shasky is actually contemplating giving his son up for Jalen Carter, like he loves him that much.
01:18But, like, can I say it this way? I don't buy that he's available.
01:23I don't buy it.
01:24Why the hell would the Eagles trade Jalen Carter?
01:27What the hell does that make sense for?
01:29They just let Jalen Phillips walk.
01:31They just gave up a third-round draft pick for Jalen Phillips at the trade deadline.
01:37They got him.
01:38They lost their first playoff game, if anybody around here remembers.
01:42And then they let him go to the Carolina Panthers for $120 million.
01:46Why would they?
01:48Why?
01:49I don't even understand why Jalen Carter's name has come up as, quote, available.
01:53And by the way, everybody's saying he's, quote, available.
01:56I've never even seen that word.
01:58Third, I've seen people are calling the Eagles about Carter.
02:02Great.
02:04People are probably calling the Niners about Fred Warner.
02:07That doesn't make him available.
02:10So I am very much in the I'll believe it when I see it category on Jalen Carter being moved
02:15off of the Philadelphia Eagles.
02:16And if he is moved, wouldn't you want to move him to a team in the other conference as opposed
02:20to the team that just came to your town and beat you?
02:23I mean, that to me makes very little sense.
02:25But, yeah, I'm all about, you know, the new league year, and we're underway now.
02:29We have been for almost six hours, and we can start to dream about what they could do or should
02:33do or what you want them to do.
02:35But I'm kind of with you.
02:36Like, Philadelphia is a team that is still very much in their championship window.
02:41I mean, they won the Super Bowl just 14 months ago.
02:43So why would they want to go ahead and dismantle the thing?
02:46I'm no expert on their cap situation.
02:48I don't know if I'm an expert on anybody's cap situation.
02:50The whole thing's pretty complex.
02:52But, sure, I like Jalen Carter.
02:55That'd be great.
02:56Do the Niners need to do something else at the pass rush position?
02:59Abso-freaking-lutely.
03:01But I don't believe that Jalen Carter is available, and I'm not real big on the idea of the 49ers
03:08in this moment of their history.
03:10I'm not real big on a multi-early draft pick trade.
03:14It's not into it.
03:16I think there's another way to do it.
03:17The Trey Hendrickson idea?
03:19Now, that I like.
03:21That's probably a shorter deal.
03:22Is it super expensive?
03:24I don't know.
03:25I don't know what his market is.
03:26He is one of the most interesting free agents that is still left after these first six hours.
03:32There's a lot of people still left.
03:33Niners have a lot of moves still to make.
03:36So, we'll see.
03:38We'll see.
03:38And I'm interested in the free agents that are on the Niners, none of whom have gone anywhere yet, which
03:44is interesting.
03:46Yeah, but I don't think any of them are going to be the kind of guys who are going to
03:50go on day one.
03:51And I'm not just saying that the top guys only go on day one.
03:54We did this during the crossover.
03:55But either you're going to be somebody who is a top-of-the-line, big-time free agent, or you're
04:02going to be somebody who is just looking for a new spot.
04:04And maybe you find that, like, you know, the tackle that the Niners got, who is largely going to be
04:09a backup, a swing tackle.
04:10But if you're Jawan Jennings and you want to go out there and get, I don't know, the kind of
04:14money that Mike Evans got, you're probably, you know, shopping for it right now.
04:18But I don't think that any team is going to give him three years and $60 million, so he'll probably
04:22have to wait.
04:23Who, Jawan?
04:24Jawan, yes.
04:24No, I don't think anyone's going to give three and $60 million.
04:28But I don't think that it's going to be well below $20 million.
04:34Again, I predict north of $15 million.
04:37And, yeah, the Niners went out and got a better receiver.
04:40The Niners went out and got a better receiver.
04:42Yeah, and he's a guy that, you know, if you have him as your one, and he wasn't really.
04:48I mean, he was because Ricky couldn't play a lot.
04:50But if he's your two, you want him to be your three.
04:52And so I'm sure they'd love to keep him and have him be their number three receiver and pay him
04:57kind of what they paid him last year.
04:59But I think he'll get more than that.
05:00I wonder.
05:01I mean, like, again, I still kind of, I know he plays as just a bit part at times.
05:09I like DeMarcus Robinson.
05:11I think DeMarcus Robinson's a good player.
05:14If you've got Mike Evans, Ricky Pearsall, and DeMarcus Robinson, if I'm Jawan Jennings, this now becomes about a lot
05:22more than just money.
05:23I don't know if I want to be on the 49ers.
05:26Where am I fitting into all of this?
05:29They just went and got another big body receiver who is faster and better and more dynamic.
05:36The only downside is he's a little bit older.
05:39But there's no red zone third down wide receiver role anymore.
05:45That belongs to Mike Evans.
05:46Right, and I mean, that role last year was Jawan Jennings, who had every red zone touchdown that was scored
05:53by a wide receiver.
05:54He had all of them.
05:55No other wide receiver got a red zone touchdown.
05:57And I do think that's why, in large part, the Niners went out and got Mike Evans, because they realized
06:02the red zone offense last year, it can't be the same one this year.
06:06And I texted you guys that McCaffrey had 17 red zone touchdowns, George Kittle had a bunch, and then you
06:13had some Tonjes, you had a couple of Luke Furls, you had some Brock Purdy, a little bit of Yusechek.
06:19You only had one wide receiver who was able to get open and score in the red zone.
06:24So that has to be more than just that, and that's why you brought in Mike Evans.
06:28Okay, can we circle back to the interesting news that broke like 10 minutes ago?
06:33Interesting news.
06:34Trey Greenlaw.
06:36Huh.
06:37So first of all, first reaction is, and I was on the wrong side of this, I really, really did
06:45not want the Niners to lose Trey Greenlaw last year.
06:49And it will forever go down as one of the more kind of heartbreaking injuries, I think, that I've seen
06:58in Bay Area sports history.
07:00Like this, it's kind of low-key, Clay Thompson-esque.
07:05Like sitting there, and it happens right in the midst of a championship round.
07:09This one happened coming out of halftime of the Super Bowl.
07:15It's that negative step.
07:16Where he's just bawling out.
07:19So many people think that the 49ers win that game if that injury doesn't happen.
07:25But then he comes back late last year.
07:28He looks great, but then kind of can't stay healthy.
07:32And then he did a can't stay healthy thing again with the Broncos this year.
07:37He's a little bit of a live wire, I think.
07:40But the Niners wanted him.
07:42The reports were they tried like hell to keep him.
07:45But he wanted something new.
07:47I've even heard reports that he didn't want to be Fred Warner's kind of like side guy anymore.
07:53Like he wanted to be the main linebacker.
07:56It never really happened in Denver.
07:5949ers have developed some other linebackers around Fred.
08:02Fred, but there are question marks at that position.
08:06And Dre will now come much cheaper.
08:08Any interest?
08:09Yeah, absolutely.
08:11I mean, why not?
08:13Dre Greenlaw is great here.
08:14And like you mentioned, it's going to be cheaper.
08:16He was set to make $7.5 million.
08:19None of that was guaranteed.
08:20And they avoid $2 million of that becoming guaranteed by doing it now.
08:24And so the Broncos did it as a kind of a mini cap casualty.
08:28So if Dre wasn't going to make $7.5 million there, you could probably get him for less than that.
08:33And you bring him in here into a linebacker room that I think needs some depth.
08:38And what did we get to last year?
08:39You got to Hendricks and what was the other guy's name?
08:45The law firm?
08:46Oh, gosh.
08:47Wallow?
08:48Gary Wallow.
08:48Yeah, Gary Wallow.
08:49Good call.
08:50Good call.
08:50Well, you got down to your four stringers.
08:52So it's a linebacker room that needs more depth.
08:55Sure.
08:55Fred should be fine.
08:56And, you know, injuries can happen to anyone.
08:58But I'm not saying it has to be, you know, Warner and Greenlaw again.
09:02But you've got Winters in there.
09:04And you would love to have more of a veteran presence, I'm sure.
09:06I mean, there's other guys that got hurt, too.
09:08I mean, right?
09:08There was Robinson.
09:09And I'm trying to think of who else.
09:12Yeah, I mean, there's still Nick Martin that's part of the group.
09:15All of that.
09:17Dre Greenlaw played in eight games this last year.
09:20Okay.
09:21Played in eight games.
09:22Yeah.
09:23I mean, not great.
09:25Not great.
09:26Not great at all.
09:27He had a quad injury, and then he got suspended.
09:29And so, yeah.
09:30But 43 tackles and a sack and a pick and a forced fumble all in eight games.
09:35So you know what you get with Dre Greenlaw.
09:38He's the guy who's going to fly around and make plays for you.
09:42Does he get the injury-prone label now?
09:45I don't know.
09:46I mean, what's it been like his whole career?
09:48The Achilles is one thing.
09:49I just, again, you know me.
09:52Like, I try to figure this stuff out.
09:53And I want, like, I would love for it to be equitable.
09:56And I just, I get confused by who gets the label and who doesn't when we put stuff side by
10:03side.
10:04Like, this is going to be a long offseason for you, listening to me tell everybody that Ricky Pearsall is
10:11not injury-prone.
10:12That we have been beyond unfair to a young player who has basically had two injuries,
10:17and one of them was because some very disenfranchised young person shot him in Union Square.
10:24So, like, he was hurt in camp before that, though.
10:29And he was hurt in Arizona State.
10:30Everybody's hurt in camp.
10:31Camp injury doesn't even mean injury to me.
10:33That just means, like, we're going to take this slow because we don't want to.
10:37Right.
10:37You know what I mean?
10:38But to me, it's, if you start to look at a pattern of your career,
10:42and there are more seasons with missed games than there aren't.
10:45Like, Mike Evans, you can't say he's injury-prone.
10:48The guy played in 15 or more games almost every single year, except last year.
10:52Man, he's about to turn 33.
10:55But it doesn't mean you're injury-prone if you're just old.
10:58I don't like injury-prone at all.
11:00Dre Greenlaw, 16 games as a rook, then 13, then 3.
11:05That's a whole year of, you know, I was hurt.
11:0715-15, 2.
11:092.
11:102, and then 8 last year.
11:12So, you know, you're looking at a little bit of an uneven cycle of your career.
11:1710 games.
11:1810 games since the Achilles.
11:20Yeah, 10 games.
11:21And it's an Achilles.
11:22So, we're not just talking about an injury.
11:24We're talking about, quite frankly, probably the worst injury.
11:28Probably the worst injury.
11:29And George Kittle now coming back from that same thing.
11:32Yep.
11:32So, I mean, we'll see what he's going to do.
11:33Is he injury-prone?
11:35He's not injury-prone, but he gets hurt a lot.
11:38He had two of them this year.
11:40Right.
11:40Two big ones this year.
11:42Well, if you look at his, like, game log over his career, he has a lot of, I'm sure, 13s
11:47and 14s.
11:48I don't have it in front of me.
11:49I'll get it.
11:49But it doesn't mean that he's, quote, injury-prone.
11:54And then the other guy, and I talked about this in the crossovers, McCaffrey, where the last time he went
11:58over 400 touches, he played a total of, I think, three games.
12:03Yep.
12:0376 touches.
12:05By the way, that year, after he had 403 touches, he played three games.
12:11He scored six touchdowns.
12:12Oh, man.
12:13So, that to me is the big story going into this year is the McCaffrey part of it because he's
12:18coming off of a career high in touches.
12:21And usually, and I could show you the list, and I could bore everybody by reading it, but the majority
12:26of my research shows that when you go over 400, the majority of the time, you come back and you
12:31have a down year.
12:32Unless your name is LaDanny and Tomlinson.
12:34Of course.
12:35Of course.
12:35LT went back-to-back 400-plus touch years, and he actually had three of them in his first five
12:40years.
12:41He's a freak.
12:42To me, the most under-discussed 49er need is at the running back position.
12:50Everyone knows they don't have a left guard.
12:52Everybody knows they need another pass rusher.
12:54Everybody knew they needed a receiver.
12:55They got one.
12:56The tight end position is interesting.
12:58I don't know when George is going to be back, and they don't really have somebody who can even, you
13:04know, mimic that for, like, whatever.
13:06Okay, Tonjes.
13:07But, like, I don't know what they're going to do with that position, but I don't hear people talking about
13:13how what I find to be an absolutely imperative need.
13:17Now, running back is a position where you can get immediate dividends in the draft.
13:24I don't know how many people want Kyle Shanahan going out there to draft a running back because that has
13:30not gone well.
13:32Let's just call that what it is.
13:34The successful running backs for Kyle Shanahan, first of all, McCaffrey came in a trade, and the other guys have
13:40all basically come undrafted for the most part.
13:43The ones that he's drafted, Ty Davis, Price, and Trey Sermon, and all, like, it has not worked out.
13:50And Jordan James is the latest.
13:52Isaac Garendo, they have got, I think, to go get someone on the market.
13:57And a lot of the guys out there, Tyler Algier, they weren't going to get ETN.
14:02I think he's too, he's kind of too high level.
14:06Kenneth Gainwell, they're gone.
14:08They're gone.
14:08I'm kind of, I got my eye on Rashad White.
14:14Unrestricted free agent was kind of the other back, the third down back next to Bucky Irving with Tampa Bay.
14:20I'd love to see the Niners get him, too.
14:24Yeah.
14:24I mean, can he catch the ball?
14:26Is he the kind of back that's going to fit?
14:28Yes, he can.
14:28Because Brian Robinson is not so much of a pass catcher.
14:31And I'm just looking at last year's stats, and you had a total of two running backs, not counting Kyle
14:37Juszczyk, who had two carries, but two running backs who actually carried the ball all year long.
14:42So it was so much McCaffrey.
14:45And you look at this year, and he's a year older, and I think Brian Robinson will probably be gone.
14:50And so, yeah, you mentioned Isaac Garendo, a guy who could not really ever get on the field.
14:55And Jordan James, a rookie year that was kind of a throwaway.
14:58So what are you going to do?
14:59Rashad White, by the way, last year, obviously he's the backup, but he had 132 carries, 572 yards, 4.3
15:07yards per carry, and also caught 40 balls out of the backfield.
15:10Oh, yeah.
15:11That's Rashad White.
15:13And, you know, he had to be the lead back for a handful of weeks because Bucky Irving was hurt.
15:18But he was their third down back.
15:21Might be the right fit.
15:22I like him.
