Police in Varanasi have arrested 14 people after a video showing an iftar gathering on a boat in the Ganga River went viral and triggered controversy.

The case was registered at Kotwali Police Station following a complaint by Rajat Jaiswal. Police confirmed that all identified accused have been taken into custody, while legal proceedings are underway.

According to officials, the group had gathered mid-river to break their fast during an iftar. The issue escalated after a video surfaced on social media allegedly showing participants consuming food, including biryani, and throwing leftover waste into the river.

The complaint alleged that disposing of food waste in the Ganga hurt religious sentiments and disrespected the sanctity of the river, prompting swift police action.

Authorities said a case has been registered against 14 named individuals along with some unidentified persons. All accused are currently being questioned as part of the investigation.

Police officials stated that statements are being recorded and evidence, including the viral video, is being examined. They added that strict action will be taken if the accusations are proven.
