00:00It began with one of the greatest stories of all time.
00:03One ring to rule them all.
00:05One ring to find them.
00:07One ring to bring them all.
00:09And in the darkness, find them.
00:12This is Lord of the Rings.
00:15The task was formidable.
00:17You are going to be producing that video game?
00:21Are you kidding?
00:26This game has to be fun to play.
00:28It's all about the gameplay.
00:34It's something that's larger than all of us.
00:38In the end, a group of developers would end up creating a game worthy of the name,
00:42The Lord of the Rings.
01:07In the shadows of Mordor, the Dark Lord Sauron forged the one ring to enslave all elves, dwarves and men
01:16of Middle-earth.
01:18The enemy has returned.
01:21And from his dark tower in Mordor, he seeks the ring.
01:27We must take the ring and destroy it.
01:32Creating a video game is always a challenge, but making a game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship
01:38of the Ring is a whole different story.
01:40It's not enough for us just to slap the license on any fantasy game and call it Middle-earth.
01:45It's very important to us that we start with Middle-earth first and that we bring out what's really important
01:51and what's really special about The Lord of the Rings and make the game out of that.
01:54There was a critic in The New York Times, I believe.
01:59He was reviewing The Two Towers when it was first published in the 50s.
02:03And he said there are two groups of people in the world.
02:08There are those who have read The Lord of the Rings and those who will.
02:11I think the challenge that Universal Interactive faces is that The Lord of the Rings is a sacred text to
02:18many, many, many people.
02:19And so that's a challenge to build upon this property in a manner that preserves the spirit and integrity that
02:26Tolkien works.
02:27The journey begins when Black Label Games, formerly Universal Interactive, secures the license to Tolkien's classic trilogy.
02:35A lot of games are created on hot licenses.
02:37And I think what sort of sets Universal Interactive apart is we put gameplay first.
02:44It's great to have a movie license, it's great to have a game license or a TV license or a
02:49literary license.
02:50We absolutely adhere to the idea that we have to remain within a certain boundaries of that license.
02:58And our job is to have that integrity.
03:01J.R. Tolkien has built one of the greatest epic fantasies known.
03:04And Universal's strength lies in building and bringing out of that kind of epic nature the true sort of realism
03:12that people can experience and enjoy.
03:14Developers strive to capture Tolkien's fantastical universe.
03:17When Universal Interactive had the opportunity to begin working on J.R. Tolkien's vision, our first goal was to put
03:24together what we felt were the elite, the stars, the best of the best in terms of the Tolkien universe
03:31and their knowledge of the Tolkien universe.
03:34It's not an adaptation to another film or to another play or to, you know, song cycle on an album.
03:42It's actually a real, strong, direct inroad right into the book itself.
03:49This is Lord of the Rings.
03:51This is Lord of the Rings.
03:53For you to actually accept this chance to be an artist involved in doing Lord of the Rings, you are
03:59required to actually step up and make art far superior than you've ever done before.
04:04Our fans are experts. I mean, they know everything, you know, and they, they will correct us when we're wrong
04:11and they will, they will be picking apart every portion of the game and we know it.
04:18Given the opportunity with a blank slate to create a team here at Universal, I looked at something that had
04:23a team of passionate Tolkien experts.
04:25They had to understand and know the universe inside and out. We weren't looking for people we had to teach
04:31the genre to. We were looking for people who had known the genre intimately enough that they could see how
04:38it would extend into the gaming area.
04:43Chris Taylor said to me, you know what, Cliff, I think that they're looking for somebody who has a lot
04:50of Tolkien experience, who has a lot of, you know, academic background in this, in this literary work.
04:56And I thought you'd might like to know that we've got the license to do the game, the video game.
05:01And I looked at him and I said, you, you are going to be producing that video game? Are you
05:08kidding? And I thought it was, I thought it was fantastic.
05:10Take heart, Frodo. We will do this together.
05:13We spent a lot of time exhaustively going through resumes to make sure that not only did they have an
05:18amazing background in game development, but they knew the J.R. Tolkien universe and that entire space by heart.
05:26Furthermore, we tried to find people from different disciplines who also could combine their talents to a synergistic whole.
05:32We had people who were very experienced in the production side of things. We had people who were very experienced
05:37in the creative side of things and also in the artistic side of things.
05:40One of the prerequisites to actually have the position here was that you literally had to be not only knowledgeable
05:47about the books, you actually had to be a fan of the books.
05:52I read The Lord of the Rings so often that my first copy has completely fallen apart from where. I've
05:58read it about a dozen times and ever since we started working on this project, I read it continuously.
06:05And it's never lost its power to amaze me or the power to captivate me.
06:10I've been talking to Pam for about 35 years. It started back when I was in third grade when I
06:15actually had a teacher who inspired me.
06:17She wore a little button to school one day. It said Bilba Baggins. Who was Bilba Baggins?
06:21My mother was a high school English teacher and was reading the book because they had come out in paperback
06:27and it was all the rage at that time.
06:28And I was intimidated because it looked like an adult novel. But she said, well, it's basically a fairy tale
06:33and you'll like it.
06:34You have my thanks, Arwen Undumiel, and my love.
06:38I read The Hobbit when I was, I think, in sixth grade. One of my concentrations in college was English
06:45literature.
06:45And my senior thesis was C.R. Tolkien versus C.S. Lewis. So it's pretty much been part of my
06:51life for at least as long as I can remember.
06:54You know, I've lost count. I have seriously lost count. I can count how many Dodgers games I've gone to
06:59on one hand, okay?
07:01But I cannot count how many times I've read The Lord of the Rings.
07:05A development team that's perfect for the job must be put together.
07:08I had an eight hour interview and I was basically bombarded by a group of fans, you know what I
07:16mean?
07:16Who are really, really, you know, they love J.R. Tolkien and they wanted to make sure that what I
07:21brought to the table actually, you know, gave them the same sort of feeling.
07:25I think they have hired people that are, have a very deep love of the Tolkien works and are very
07:32knowledgeable about the unique qualities that make Tolkien so special.
07:37And in addition to that, they have been very open to keeping a dialogue going because I think no one
07:42of us can claim to be an authority on it.
07:44It's too, it's something that's larger than all of us.
07:47Now that this dream team of game designers and Tolkien fans is assembled, the real work is about to begin.
08:07With a talented development team in place, work on Black Label Games' The Fellowship of the Ring begins.
08:14It's very important to the whole team that we start from the real works.
08:19We start from where Professor Tolkien was going with these stories and bring out the details and bring out the
08:25spirit and bring out the life of Middle Earth.
08:27When you think about the numbers, over, over 100 million people have read and enjoyed this story, handed down from
08:36their parents and they're handing it down to their kids.
08:38And all of these millions and millions and millions of people are not going to enjoy the story in a
08:45whole brand new way.
08:46In a brand new visual, immediate way that they've never had the chance to enjoy before.
08:51Take care of yourself, Frodo, and bring back all the news you can. I'm writing a book about your adventure.
08:58We had to find a standard. We had to find the gold standard of Middle Earth.
09:02It will feel right, but not necessarily be exactly what everyone imagines, but be very, very close.
09:09I was asked to actually create the look for the entire Middle Earth, which included all the characters, all the
09:15monsters, all the environments, everything that you would imagine that a book would actually have for you to actually come
09:22up and show me what that image looks like.
09:24As a game artist, as a game designer, you're allowed to actually get involved with it, literally make bag in
09:31the way it should look, you know, according to the description, but really to get in so you could almost
09:37smell the sweat of the orcs that are surrounding you.
09:40The game platform allows you to have that depth.
09:45In order to create all the Lord of the Rings games, we had to build a very extensive style guide.
09:50The purpose of the style guide was to keep a continuity of the look throughout the entire franchise itself, but
09:58it really identifies every element that would be in all three of the books.
10:0392 environments, 44 item images just for like weapons and swords and a costume design, a whole section on all
10:13the characters, the fellowship.
10:14This style guide ended up becoming 336 pages long. I mean, it's a coffee table book. It's gorgeous. I mean,
10:22everyone who's seen it really wants a copy of it.
10:25Then I must guard the ring.
10:27And I will help you bear this burden, as long as it is yours to bear.
10:32Tolkien Enterprises is a guiding force in the development of the game.
10:35This project has been very interesting because we've had direct dealings with Tolkien Enterprises, and they're sort of the gatekeepers
10:41to what is authentic and what isn't.
10:44One of the things where we were first kicking around the ideas of the game, they were very specific about,
10:49you know, Frodo is not a warrior, so Frodo the Barbarian doesn't cut it.
10:54And so we have to have gameplay that is truly authentic to the way Jared Tolkien wanted to portray Middle
11:00-earth.
11:01And so when we do game designs, when we do game art, we take the time and talk to them
11:06and make sure that it is accurate.
11:08We brought a creative director, Daniel Greenberg, who's been doing this since he was literally five or six years old.
11:17And his experiences brought all the depth of the gameplay, you know, example, you know, what the elves look like,
11:22what they wear, Galadriel, what, how does she act, what are nuances.
11:26And he could add so many different points to the book that were missing in some descriptions in previous games.
11:31As creative director, I'm very protective of Middle-earth and of what I consider to be the professor's intent.
11:37Our liaison, Laurie Battle, has done an extremely good job working with us, and not only does she come back
11:43with comments and suggestions,
11:45she actually comes back and says, well, let's try this piece of gameplay, or what about, have you tried about
11:49working this into your storyline, which has actually helped us out a lot.
11:52And that's why when you look at the depth of gameplay, we are very loyal to the books, and we
11:57feel we really capture the spirit of what the original books were all about.
12:01The contribution that I bring is placed, I really see the magic of Tolkien and the power and story in
12:09our present world,
12:10and that Tolkien gave us gifts and tools to imbue the real world.
12:15And that's a broader context that I see all of this playing out in.
12:19All the art that you see in this game, especially in the style guide, all had to be approved by
12:24the Tolkien Enterprise.
12:25So, it's approved by our in-house group, then it goes to Daniel Greenberg, then it goes to the Tolkien
12:31Enterprise.
12:32Through their combined expertise, these artists recreate the world of Middle-earth in exacting detail, including the dreaded Mines of
12:39Moria.
12:40Where do we go?
12:41There is another path, the Mines of Moria.
12:44When I started creating Moria, I actually created it as if it was brand new, perfect, beautiful, with drapes and
12:52lighting and the reflection, everything was there.
12:56Then I went and destroyed it.
13:00I'm very excited about the artwork, it's really fun to see the lushness of the environment and also the iconography
13:07of Tolkien, the gate to Moria and the different elements coming to life.
13:13You really visualize what Middle-earth looks like, and I think the visualization during the gameplay is what we're doing.
13:19So, you say, yeah, that's what I think different parts of Moria look like.
13:23I feel like when you do see Moria, you can still feel that.
13:26You feel that magnificence as if you've just come upon something that you have never seen before and will never
13:33be built on this planet ever again.
13:35And yet, with really the tools of computer animation and creativity put together, you're able to create these environments and
13:44worlds with depth and soot and smell and water and its magnificence.
13:50Great attention is also given to the creation of classic Tolkien characters.
13:54When I create, say, Legolas or Gandalf or Frodo, I mean, I'm down to his buttons, the fabric.
14:02If you zoomed into the high-res picture of Frodo, you'll actually see his embroidery that he actually has on
14:07the brim of one of his pockets.
14:10One of the things when you make the game is you have to have identification with the character you put
14:14on the screen.
14:15Being a third-person action-adventure, you look at Frodo, you look at Aragorn, you look at Gandalf as they're
14:22going through the world and says,
14:23Can you identify with these characters? Can your control system, how you're playing the characters, make you feel like you're
14:28actually them?
14:29Or is it just like a 2D cutout you're moving around on the screen?
14:32And so it's all about conveying emotion to you feeling you're being in those characters.
14:37All the characters that I actually designed, they were designed from what was their drive, what was their motivation, who
14:45was Legolas.
14:46I wanted to make Legolas so that you were so fascinated by the man that you wanted to know where
14:50this elf came from.
14:52Because he even looks different from all the other elves.
14:55It's like bringing that to the surface of who Legolas is.
14:58And it's almost like they start to tell you who they are.
15:01This title also gives gamers the opportunity to interact with characters found exclusively in the novels.
15:07Some of the opportunities I think that game players are going to find in playing our game is the opportunity
15:14to explore portions of the novels that were never, that never made it to the screen.
15:20Hello Frodo.
15:21Hello Angelica.
15:22There are, there are so many chapters that for the sake of time were cut in order to make, you
15:29know, a good movie.
15:29And we all know having seen the movie is awesome.
15:32But when you look at the works of J.R. Tolkien, it is an epic novel.
15:35Ride on. Nor Olim. Nor Olim as fall off.
15:40That effort we wanted to pay homage to.
15:43And the best way to pay homage to that is to allow fans to explore all the different parts of
15:47the world that, that just didn't have time to make it out of the silver screen.
15:51Everybody's favorite character, Tom Bombadil, who is, you know, one of the most mysterious, misunderstood characters that Tolkien ever created
15:59in his legends.
16:00And we've never ever seen him.
16:02We've never seen him on stage or, or in a movie.
16:05And we probably never will.
16:06But now we're going to have a lot of adventures with, uh, uh, Tom and the Hobbits and all these
16:11great characters and monsters and, and different things that we've been missing are all going to be there now.
16:16While the visual portions of The Fellowship of the Ring fall into place, Black Label Games is also hard at
16:22work crafting a rich gameplay experience.
16:35As the team behind Black Label Games, The Fellowship of the Ring, recreates Middle Earth, they address the importance of
16:42gameplay.
16:43This game has to be fun to play. It's all about the gameplay. That's what we're going to emphasize more
16:47than anything else.
16:48One of the things that we wanted to attack in this game is giving the player an opportunity to experience
16:53Tolkien's world from more than just one perspective.
16:57So, we've given the players an opportunity to play more than one character, and the characters themselves are very unique
17:02and distinct in their abilities.
17:05Obviously, the first game, The Fellowship of the Ring, you're going to be playing Frodo, uh, with the Hobbit.
17:14He has, uh, a amount of adventure in gameplay, but he's a sort of central character of the story, so
17:18he's allowed to play him through it.
17:21I will take the ring, though I do not know the way.
17:27Get away! Stay back!
17:32But where should we go?
17:34Towards danger, but not too rashly, nor too straight.
17:37We put Gandalf, I mean, everybody's wanted to be the wizard, the magician, to be able to cast the spells,
17:42to explore the depths of Moria.
17:55Gandalf speaks true. Our troubles may get worse and sooner than we'd like.
17:59And then, of course, you have the, you know, the barbarian, the combat, which is Aragorn,
18:03which he'll be able to go through, fight his way through Moria, um, lead the team onward.
18:19We want Gandalf's sections to be very different from Aragorn's, to be very different from Frodo's,
18:23and we want them to all bring out the unique nature of each of these characters.
18:27Frodo gets to do a lot of sneaking and a lot of, uh, stealth and, and thoughtful puzzle solving.
18:33Gandalf gets to do puzzle solving as well, but we had a whole component of spell use,
18:37and, uh, fighting, and of ferreting out mysteries in, in, within Moria.
18:43And for Aragorn, we've added, uh, the most combat-oriented sections of the game of all,
18:48so the players will have a chance for a lot of action-adventure in addition to stealth and magical gameplay.
18:53The unique portion of the gameplay is that you need to master all three of these skills in order to
18:59move the gameplay forward.
19:00In certain sections, you need to think with your wits and not with your brawn.
19:03In other sections, you need to have a good combat eye. You need to understand how to attack different enemies
19:09and how to defeat multiple opponents.
19:11We've built a chronological timeline to show where certain adventures and episodes happen as the Fellowship of the Ring progresses
19:18from the beginning to the end.
19:21The Fellowship of the Ring game is full of little surprises for Tolkien fans.
19:25We, uh, we try to weave in aspects of the book that people might not expect to come out in
19:30gameplay.
19:31For instance, the way that we teach the player how to use the controls in a little tutorial section,
19:36we've actually adapted from the section of the book where Frodo's home is overrun by his unwanted neighbors.
19:43It's very easy to make a hack and slash combat game.
19:46We could have taken that route and, uh, you know, delivered at least one aspect of what fans would have
19:52expected in the movies or in the games and the books.
19:56What we wanted to do was attack this from the opportunity to give the players and the fans more than
20:03just that.
20:03While this game focuses on the first novel of the trilogy, the developers make sure they keep the next two
20:09books in mind.
20:10That leads on to the next two books with Two Towers and Return of the King.
20:14And so we're scripting their adventures and the Fellowship through those two books.
20:19It's like Saving Private Hobbit, I guess is the best way to look at it, where you have, you know,
20:23the experience of being there.
20:25And I think that's what people want to see. They want to be part of it.
20:29Black Label Games ships the Fellowship of the Ring in late 2002 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, and Game
20:36Boy Advance.
20:37Tolkien fans and gamers alike are treated to one of the most anticipated Tolkien games ever made.
20:43If I were a fan and I was waiting for this game to come out, I would be beside myself
20:49waiting to see the parts of the book that I have never seen before.
20:53I've only read about. Parts with Tom Bombadil. Parts in the Old Forest. Places where we are going to have
20:59such an amazing opportunity for players to explore the world of Tolkien and his vision.
21:05Then we made it. But we needed you, Gandalf.
21:09I was held captive by the treachery of Saruman the Wight, the Chief of the Wizards.
21:15But now I am free and astonished that you brought the Ring all this way. Hobbit seems especially resistant to
21:22the evil of the Ring.
21:23Being able to bring this, our vision, with such a talented group of people to life, has really been sort
21:28of like a lifelong dream.
21:30What I'm most excited about is to be there to see how people actually receive it.
21:35You feel honored by this chance. You feel like this isn't, this doesn't happen but once in your lifetime.
21:42It's been almost like a hobby and an academic study and a passion of my own over the past 20
21:50years. And it's been great. It's been very, very fulfilling.
22:03This is your G Sadly Kill.
22:03I live. This is my – this is my MaолоP, but now I'm carrying out my G gees.
22:10It will be great for you and it'll be confident.
22:10A 보시면 He's got a gluing.
22:11He's got an energy for this.
22:14He's got an energy for me to get an energyP, too.
22:23The ability to return on me is a player for questions with the Democratic siendo.
22:24Let's go.
