31 January - National evening forecast presented by Kathryn Chalk.
Transcript
00:00Hello. I'd love to promise some sunshine, but there is further rain in the forecast as we head into the new month.
00:07So we've got low pressure continuing to dominate. We've had one across the country through Saturday.
00:12Then we have these occlusion, one pushing across Northern Ireland and then one skirting the south coast that we need to watch out for.
00:19Some uncertainty on that ahead of another band of rain coming through Monday and into Tuesday.
00:24There is already a mettlefish yellow rain warning in force covering the southwest through Monday and into Tuesday.
00:32But back to the rest of this evening then.
00:34So the band of rain across Wales will continue to push its way north and eastwards into northern parts of England and into southern Scotland.
00:42Behind that, we hold on to a lot of cloud, but in any breaks, we may see some mist and fog developing, especially across the Midlands and the far south east.
00:51Again, some spells of rain. The main uncertainty is how much of that pushes into the southwest as we go through Sunday and another band coming through into Northern Ireland later on.
01:03But otherwise, there's a lot of cloud around. So it is going to be frost free to start Sunday morning.
01:08We still hold on to these strong south easterly winds across Orkney and Shetland.
01:13So it's a messy start to Sunday morning. A lot of cloud around, grotty with outbreaks of rain on and off.
01:22Again, some coming into the south coast. But otherwise, this main band across Northern Ireland will push its way eastwards, affecting much of Wales, then into the Midlands, then into Northern England.
01:33But behind that, it will turn drier. So perhaps some glimmers of sunshine coming into Northern Ireland later on in the day, into the far southwest of Wales and into Devon and Cornwall to end the afternoon.
01:47Otherwise, for most of us, it's cloudy with further spells of rain.
01:52Temperatures, though, still around average for the time of year.
01:55Feeling chilly, still in that brisk wind across Orkney and Shetland.
02:00Highs in the south, up to 10 or 11 degrees.
02:04So as we go through Sunday evening, then we hold on to a lot of cloud again through the Midlands and pushing its way eastwards into East Anglia and northeastern England.
02:13Behind that, where we see the clear skies across Northern Ireland into parts of southwestern Wales and the far southwest of England.
02:21Temperatures will fall. We could see some icy stretches developing, some mist and fog, given all of the moisture as well, and a touch of frost to start Monday.
02:32Otherwise, most places still quite chilly out there, but probably frost-free, given the amount of cloud and rain.
02:39So despite perhaps a dry and bright start across Northern Ireland and more so the southwest, we do have this band of rain gradually approaching.
02:48So the cloud will thicken later on here. Otherwise, most places holding on to a good deal of cloud.
02:55Further showers in the mix, more so across northeastern areas.
02:59Scotland, again, we're going to see further snow showers over the mountains and still some brisk south-easterly winds.
03:06Otherwise, a warning does come into force through the southwest as we go through Monday evening.
03:12So already rain falling on saturated ground.
03:16As for temperatures, though, it's still relatively the average for the time of year, but feeling chilly in any breeze.
03:23And especially across Scotland, feeling colder here, especially underneath the snow.
03:28So there's still a lot going on in the forecast.
03:30Further spells of rain in the mix.
