Transcript
00:00Our coverage continues right now with AccuWeather's Allie Reed.
00:03She is joining us live from D.C. where we saw a few inches of snow,
00:08but now it is just sleet, still better than freezing rain.
00:15Well, I also mentioned, you know, that maybe it's not the best conditions for a snowball fight.
00:20We heard the D.C. Snowball Fight Association has officially canceled the snowball fight for today.
00:25But if you can see behind me, oh, by the way, we're not just on any hill.
00:29Take a look at the hill that we're actually at.
00:31Andy, can you pan up to the left?
00:33Yeah, you can see where we are.
00:35How cool is this?
00:37Oh, my gosh.
00:37To be a kid sledding at the Capitol this morning, can you talk about perfect conditions?
00:44Okay, so not the best conditions for a snowball fight, but perfect conditions for sledding this morning.
00:50Lots of smiling faces here in our nation's Capitol.
00:54I want to talk to Joel.
00:56Hey, Joel.
00:56You're a Steelers fan.
00:58I don't know, you know.
00:59I got a lot of time today, so.
01:01Yeah, well, I'm an Eagles fan, too, so I can feel you on that.
01:05I feel your pain.
01:06But, listen, this is really exciting.
01:08Your family is out here today.
01:10You said your wife, your kids, some friends are here.
01:12You live in the neighborhood.
01:13How exciting is it to be out here this morning?
01:15It's great.
01:16It's a lot of fun.
01:16As you said, conditions are great.
01:18We're trying to beat the ice and get out here.
01:20So a lot of folks here, you know, live, work on the hill.
01:22So it's a great time to come out and take advantage of it.
01:24Well, and you hit the time perfectly.
01:26You talked about that timing, getting out here before conditions kind of deteriorate.
01:30Was that the plan this morning?
01:32And was that something you guys talked about last night?
01:35Yeah, absolutely.
01:35Everything was laid out last night, all the gear.
01:38Neighbor kids were knocking on the door, you know, early this morning.
01:41So we try to get up and get out before we get ice out.
01:45How exciting is it to see all the families here?
01:47You mentioned the types of families that come here.
01:49A lot of times it's kids who have families that work here on the hill, which makes that
01:54just even more exciting to kind of take in the elements here and then be in such a historic
01:59spot.
02:00Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
02:00You know, we don't always get this much snow.
02:02So we try to take advantage of it.
02:03But you can hear everybody's laughing and having a good time.
02:06It's not always the case in the hill.
02:07So I'm putting you on the spot.
02:09Joel, are you going to be getting on a sled yourself?
02:11I need to try.
02:12I got to get away from the kids first.
02:13They're going to be up and down.
02:14So this is exciting.
02:16All good things.
02:17Go enjoy time with your family.
02:19Take it in.
02:19And like you said, we don't have the time frame is limited.
02:22So enjoy it while you can.
02:24Yeah.
02:24Thanks, Joel.
02:25I appreciate it.
02:26I'll be looking up.
02:26I'm going to be watching.
02:27OK, we're going to be watching.
02:29How exciting is this?
02:30Right.
02:30We're talking about those conditions, though, and certainly that is a big topic of discussion
02:35right now.
02:36I want to take to some video to give you a perspective of what it looks like on the roads right
02:40now.
02:40This was taken in the past hour to give you a good idea as to what it really
02:44looks like here.
02:45And the roads are simply not great.
02:48You know, the thing is, is that officials, while the D.C.
02:51Public Works Department really said we've got 800 employees, we're really, really going
02:56to get out there to get on top of this.
02:58And by the way, we've seen the crews.
02:59They're doing a phenomenal job.
03:01But with the snow coming down as quickly as it is, it's just really hard to say on top
03:05of that.
03:06So right now, their main goal is going to be those main roads.
03:09But even the main roads right now with the conditions that we're facing are just not
03:13ideal.
03:14Local officials in the area, the D.C.
03:16metro area, say if you don't have to get behind a wheel, don't do so at least until
03:21the earliest Monday morning.
03:22That just paints a picture for you as to what it really looks like here.
03:26But then we talked about those conditions.
03:28Again, perfect for something like sledding.
03:30If we can bring you back live.
03:31I mean, it looks great.
03:33I mean, it really, really is fantastic.
03:34These kids are getting some good speed and traction.
03:39But unfortunately, we talked about that snowball fight.
03:42If we can take to that video again, this is what the snowball fight looked around this
03:47time last year, January 6th, 2025.
03:49Conditions absolutely beautiful for a snowball fight.
03:53And my gosh, when you have a snowball fight in the city of Washington, D.C., it really is
03:59incredible.
03:59People come out in full force for it.
04:01And it's just a wonderful time.
04:03But I mentioned it.
04:03Unfortunately, it has been canceled for today, the D.C. Snowball Fight Association saying
04:08we just can't do it in these conditions.
04:11And I'll show you if we can bring you back live again, just talking about why those conditions
04:15just aren't good enough for it.
04:17You see this snow here looks beautiful.
04:20But look what happens when you just pat it down.
04:22It's just not packable for a snowball.
04:25And again, that due in part is because of the sleet that we can hear that little pelting
04:30noise, when it hits the microphone, that's that sleet mixing in that just isn't going
04:35to work in your favor for the conditions.
04:37Again, do not get behind the wheel if you don't have to.
04:40Conditions not good.
04:41We've seen a number of occasions now where people have gotten stuck out on the roads.
04:45They've had to be been saved by officials here.
04:48And unfortunately, when those people go out on the roads and they get stuck, that's taking
04:52away time that they could be allocating towards clearing those roads.
04:56So do your part.
04:57Stay home.
04:58If you don't have to be out on the roads on a day like today.
05:00But guys, is this not amazing?
05:03Taking the elements with me, Bernie, Anna, we're live at the Capitol.
05:09How exciting.
05:10You can't get anything better than this on a day like today, guys.
05:14Allie, this is exactly why we have you out live, because you are way more excited about
05:19being in the snow than I would be.
05:20You know what I want to see, Allie?
05:21I'm going to put you on the spot.
05:23I want you to take one of those sleds and come on down the hill.
05:27Allie, you want to do it now?
05:28You want to do it later?
05:29But I want to see it.
05:30I think she's going to convince the kid to borrow the sled.
05:34Right now.
05:35You want to do it now?
05:36You want to do it later?
05:37Are you sledding?
05:40I don't, guys, I can't.
05:42I'd have to run all the way up there.
05:43I'd be out of breath.
05:44Okay, later, later.
05:45Next time.
05:45Next time.
05:46Next time.
05:47All right.
05:48All right.
05:48He's offering me his sled, though.
05:50He's offering me his sled.
05:51Well, next time, then.
05:53Yeah.
