00:01:07And now, the HBO Sports presentation, World Championship Boxing.
00:01:16The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
00:01:39Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the reigning and defending, undefeated, WBC Super Featherweight Champion of the World,
00:01:53Pretty Boy, pretty boy, Floyd Mayweather.
00:02:01For a young fighter to step into the ring of greatness, he must prove he is worthy.
00:02:07Oh, what a right-hand shot.
00:02:09Not by defying description.
00:02:14Overhand right glance, three times for Floyd Mayweather.
00:02:18But by dominating and discarding formidable foes.
00:02:23On January 19, Floyd Mayweather Jr. faced such a challenge in the punishing, pulverizing puncher, Diego Corrales.
00:02:30This is as bad as bad blood gets.
00:02:35On this night, he wasn't Little Floyd, Jr., or Pretty Boy.
00:02:39He was simply the man.
00:02:43He hits harder than you think he did.
00:02:46Jail, right on the pitch.
00:02:47Corral is starting.
00:02:48Boyweather is running, hiding, and he can scarcely find the moment to throw upon him.
00:02:53Boxer simply frustrating the banger.
00:02:57Now, Floyd, keep doing what you're doing.
00:02:59Keep your hand up good.
00:03:00Seven, eight, and last round, he's ready to go.
00:03:03The super quickness of Floyd Mayweather reduces a knockdown.
00:03:07It's like playing for the Cobra.
00:03:09This is almost like a Tiger Woods kind of performance against the field.
00:03:14Fifth knockdown of the fight.
00:03:16That's going to be the end of the fight.
00:03:20Tonight, greatness continues.
00:03:29Tonight, let's go.
00:03:46tonight world championship boxing is back from grand rapids michigan we're live for 130 pound
00:04:05doubleheader with the winners of these two fights possibly meeting later on this year
00:04:09floyd mayweather jr one of the best fighters in the world will be taking on hard punching carlos
00:04:14hernandez and before that jesus chavez and juan arias compete with the winner looking ahead to
00:04:21a possible showdown with mayweather the champion thomas wolf wrote you can't go home again but then
00:04:27of course wolf wasn't getting paid to go to asheville north carolina the way floyd mayweather
00:04:32jr collects money to come home to grand rapids where he was born raised and had a successful
00:04:37amateur boxing career winning several national titles and an olympic birth tonight lloyd mayweather
00:04:44says thank you to his fans with his first fight since his shocking destruction of diego corrales
00:04:50four months ago we're in a hockey arena in grand rapids michigan good evening everybody i'm jim
00:04:57lampley welcome to this special edition of hbo's world championship boxing which showcases the fastest
00:05:03rising force in the sport floyd mayweather jr who has vaulted within the past year into that pound for
00:05:09pound category where he's being compared with shane mosley felix trinidad and roy jones and on the
00:05:16undercard the fascinating personal story of jesus chavez a long-time contender in this weight class
00:05:22who could be angling toward a fight with mayweather later on this year working with me as always two
00:05:27time world heavyweight champion and hbo's world championship boxing expert big george foreman george
00:05:35floyd mayweather is making big statements in trying to elevate his career and his boxing appeal
00:05:40now that he puts himself in that best pound for pound category does he have to close the show
00:05:45sensationally every time as trinidad has been doing as mosley has been doing no i think right now he's
00:05:50doing a great job of keeping his name in the win column he's got a lot of w's there the great ones
00:05:55sugar ray robertson uh joe lewis even jack dempsey they all thought what's important winning fights and
00:06:02having some money later on he's got some money so don't worry about anything else that would uh from
00:06:07the heavyweight with the highest knockout percentage of any heavyweight champion of all time but george
00:06:11i'm sure you're right floyd at the end of the day will be looking for a w meanwhile we're going to see
00:06:17first the story of jesus chavez it's a familiar tale that of a teenager with high aspirations and a lot
00:06:24going for him who makes a single mistake that winds up affecting every hour of every day for the rest of
00:06:30his life because of the nature of the mistake chavez made and the extraordinary price he paid for
00:06:36it he comes into the ring tonight as he will for a w meanwhile we're going to see first the story of
00:06:43jesus chavez it's a familiar tale that of a teenager with high aspirations and a lot going for him who
00:06:50makes a single mistake that winds up affecting every hour of every day for the rest of his life because
00:06:56of the nature of the mistake chavez made and the extraordinary price he paid for it he comes into
00:07:02the ring tonight as he will for almost every fight from now on with both the curse and the mystique
00:07:08of long unfulfilled expectation the story is told for us by hbo boxing analyst larry merchant
00:07:19as a 17 year old high school student in chicago jesus chavez was a promising amateur boxer
00:07:25with a secret as a boy he had illegally emigrated from mexico with his family nobody would have
00:07:32cared or found out if he didn't commit an impulsive mistake that opened up his past and clouded his
00:07:40future i was approached by two of my friends to do an armed robbery just as simple as as i'm telling you
00:07:48the story i said yes that's where my life changed chavez served three and a half years for his part
00:07:57in a grocery store robbery time enough for the government to investigate his background knowing
00:08:03that i had messed up the best thing of my life was definitely haunting me when i was in jail i knew that
00:08:10when i got out of there i wanted to dedicate most of my time to boxing but as an illegal alien with a
00:08:17felony conviction chavez was deported under a tough new law actually before i stepped out of the door
00:08:25they were inside waiting for me they cuffed me they put me in the car and took me to the airport just
00:08:30weeks later with a different name his present one chavez again crossed the border illegally and started his
00:08:38career as a pro in austin texas i thought that the american dream was going to be achieved i felt
00:08:46that my life was taken off in the right direction two and a half years later after building a reputation
00:08:53as a potential champion with a big following in texas chavez was again discovered and deported those
00:09:01were very difficult times still i was under the impression that i was going to be back in the united
00:09:07states within three or four months he paid twice for what he'd done one time it cost him a total of
00:09:15seven to almost eight years of his life he served his time america believes in second chances he never
00:09:23got his second chance they threw him out i didn't get a fight for six months i started wondering about
00:09:30where my career was going to go in mexico where there are many fighters and julio cesar chavez was
00:09:37still king jesus chavez was an unknown and he didn't know much about his native country either he experienced
00:09:46culture shock being caught between two countries was very hard for me because at the time i was up in the
00:09:52year i was not an american and i was not a mexican i pretty much thought of myself as a man without a
00:10:01country because of his prowess as a fighter chavez's cause was taken up by writers and politicians in austin
00:10:09including then governor george w bush last winter at 28 after two years in mexico the ins granted him a visa to
00:10:19work and live to fight again in america the journey continues much of that footage was called from a
00:10:30documentary that was instrumental in chavez's cause made by fans of his in austin so the bad luck that he
00:10:39made for himself by committing a felony was offset some way by the good luck he made for himself when
00:10:49on a whim like that while he was at an airport on a stopover in austin and looked out and saw the
00:10:55skyline he decided that eventually he would make that his home now in the ring jim that's the place
00:11:04where a fighter has to make his luck i'd be fascinated to know if president bush is watching tonight
00:11:09catching a glimpse of the fighter whose life he has helped to turn around let's take a look at the
00:11:14tail of the tape now for jesus chavez against an even more obscure opponent named juan arias you can
00:11:21see that arias who is an auto body shop worker from napa california wine and golf country is 31 years
00:11:28old the clock is ticking for him as it is for chavez at age 28 two inch height advantage for arias three
00:11:33inch reach advantage for juan they both weighed in under the 130 pound limit on our unofficial hbo scales
00:11:39this evening they will both enter at the lightweight limit of 135 rules about where their unofficial
00:11:45ringside scorer harold letterman okay jim the jesus chavez one arias fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
00:11:51using the unified rules you see on the screen jim i just wanted to go over the four points in which
00:11:55the judges will use to score each individual round clean punching effective aggressiveness backing the
00:12:01guy up scoring the clean effective shots getting off first ring general ship number three defense number
00:12:08four jim all right harold since an early career loss six years ago jesus chavez has won 30 consecutive
00:12:17fights he's had two bouts in the united states since being allowed back into the country in january this
00:12:23is his big coming out party tonight he last appeared on american television on the undercard of lennox
00:12:29lewis versus andrew galata october 4 1997 24 ko's among his 34 wins 13 in the last 14 fights he's a
00:12:39puncher so too is the opponent juan arias arias fighting road games away from napa california against
00:12:47largely unknown opposition is like chavez a slugger 27 ko's among his 33 wins in 34 fights the only loss
00:12:57he was ahead on the cards and suffered a cut eye and so for a fight which could take place many
00:13:05believe in a phone booth between arias and chavez let's go to ring announcer michael buffer for the
00:13:09official introduction ladies and gentlemen good evening and welcome to professional boxing brought
00:13:16to you by top rank incorporated in association with your undisputed king of beers budweiser
00:13:22always proud to be your bud these bouts are sanctioned by the michigan athletic board of
00:13:28control the three judges assigned to ringside for this first bout scoring on a 10-point system will be
00:13:36gerald anderson frank garza and gary merit and when the bell rings your referee in charge of the action
00:13:44monty oswald and now 12 rounds of boxing in the super featherweight division for the nabf championship
00:13:55introducing first fighting out of the blue corner wearing gold trimmed with black and weighing in
00:14:01at 129 pounds his professional record an excellent one 33 victories including 27 knockouts
00:14:09with only one loss from napa california ladies and gentlemen here is the challenger juan el marro
00:14:24and his opponent across the ring fighting out of the red corner wearing white trimmed with red and
00:14:30green green and weighing in at 129 and one quarter pounds his professional record also an outstanding
00:14:37one 34 victories including 24 knockouts also with only one defeat ladies and gentlemen by way of delicia's
00:14:47chihuahua mexico now fighting out of austin texas the defending nabf champion and number one right contender in the world
00:14:57jesus el matador chavez
00:15:06okay gentlemen we went over the rules in the locker room everything looks good all the blue here a little
00:15:12bit of vaseline there any questions from the chief second from this corner any checkings no questions all
00:15:18right let's be professional about it protect yourself at all times touch them up and come out at the bell
00:15:23touch them up good luck the question here is whether chavez who calls himself an old fighter at 28
00:15:32has the stuff to be competitive with mayweather in his next fight
00:15:50good good go jesus javas and the white trunks with a green stripe
00:15:57juan arias with the gold trunks with black trim
00:16:17arias seemed momentarily discomfited by his waistline of the trunks and javas lands a big right hand
00:16:23that backs juan arias up
00:16:29javas his first left hook to the body was a little too low that one landed
00:16:34on the belly arias is better look out for those right hands you don't want to get caught too early
00:16:39with those because it makes you change your whole boxing plan
00:16:43arias says he's normally required to work in the body shop right up until the time of the fight
00:16:57but this is such a huge assignment for him that he actually got two weeks off to prepare for the fight
00:17:03right now chavez is working in his body shop good shots down below
00:17:18there's a red spot already on the outside of juan arias's left thigh no doubt from the right
00:17:23hands that chavez was able to land early in the battle now arias just short with a long right cross
00:17:32chavez coming back with that left hook to the body and a solid uppercut right up the middle
00:17:38and in round one jesus javas is already backing wide arias up into the ropes
00:17:43javas is looking pretty impressive he's putting his combinations together not allowing arias to boss him
00:17:49around although he has a longer reach taking charge takes a lot of energy to keep this kind of fighting
00:17:57up though for both men well uh chavez has got to reach so high so the energy is like a sprint every
00:18:05time he throws those right hands arias landed a solid left hook as he stepped inside and now arias
00:18:12trying to deal to the body the way chavez has punished his ribcage
00:18:19two pretty solid warriors but you can see that arias has a little bit of a tendency to
00:18:23win his punches and chavez takes advantage with the right hand there
00:18:28there are those right hands upstairs
00:18:33arias has been wallowed by chavez's power shot keep him up keep him up
00:18:36above the line let's go get a little range and uh chavez is throwing those those right hands from way
00:18:42up high we can see them and uh arias can't stop
00:18:53hiding in floyd mayweather's home town and looking for a date with mayweather chavis would love a spectacular
00:19:00early round knockout and he landed a lot of solid shot
00:19:03in a deep breath okay now listen that's a perfect mouth for you okay that's a perfect mouth for you
00:19:12you see what the jab do for you huh the jab is going to set everything up for you okay everything
00:19:18you're standing straight in front of him he's coming with overhand rights okay you got to move away
00:19:22from that right hand okay don't wait for him to come in you got a jab when you see him trying to
00:19:27come in you got to offset him with that jab and you got to work away from that right hand
00:19:37come on a look at chavez's body work gives you a glimpse of why he had the promise he did early on
00:19:50well we told you they'd be active the two fighters threw 167 punches combined in round one but jesus
00:20:00chavez was the man who landed 45 out of 82 that's a 55 percent connect rate he punished arias in the
00:20:07first round and you heard arias the trainer gary sullinger giving him just the right bite get away from
00:20:11that right hand the way you get away from his right hand is jab and move to his left side stay
00:20:21over on that left side make him wear out of his left hand a little bit he's doing a good job by the
00:20:27right hand there's a big right hand from arias and chavez backs up momentarily as arias chases it
00:20:45they're getting into that phone booth posture i mentioned and a big uppercut by chavez wobbles arias
00:20:56again and now chavez is holding on after arias landed a shot
00:21:08i got a hunch it might not go for a round guys i don't know if we could go for a run after this
00:21:38i'm going to pace myself this is a blow by blow man's festival if you wanted to call every land
00:21:46a bunch it would be a heck of a radio broadcast as i said earlier throwing those right hands up high
00:21:53it'd be a hard pass over and over for chavez because when you work on the punching bag nobody
00:21:58punches up higher on the bed you get in the ring and start doing a lot of it you get tired
00:22:08here's what's going on on that right down here right left by arias connoisse comes back with two shots
00:22:17to the body this is punishing warfare
00:22:26right
00:22:32It's important that Chavez make Arias throw a lot of punches now
00:22:41because make him equally as tired.
00:22:43Sometimes you got to cover up, move out of the way,
00:22:46and make him throw shots.
00:22:47Arias turning to referee Monty Oswald to say,
00:22:50hey, he's hitting me low.
00:22:52And Oswald tends to that Chavez to try to keep him up.
00:22:56Horrific second round.
00:22:58June 18, catch the next position of Real Sports with Brian Gumbel.
00:23:01The 100 stories we're working on.
00:23:03A look at Martina Navratilova, skier, weightlifter, hockey player,
00:23:08tennis legends rejoining the tour at age 44.
00:23:12That's Monday, June 18 at 10 p.m.
00:23:15Real Sports, nothing is out of bounds.
00:23:20That's better, okay?
00:23:21You're moving, and that's what you got to do.
00:23:23You're catching him with that overhand right over this shoulder.
00:23:26Once you keep stepping over and catching him with that, okay?
00:23:29Get your feet moving a little bit.
00:23:31You're doing good, baby.
00:23:32We can get this guy.
00:23:32You heard him.
00:23:33You heard him, okay?
00:23:35Don't let him hold you.
00:23:36If you get him hurt again, punch when you're...
00:23:39Arias, his trainer, is telling the truth.
00:23:45Chavez, early in that round, seemed hurt.
00:23:47Second down.
00:23:48That punch right there, shook him up.
00:23:52He recovered.
00:23:56Copybox numbers through round two.
00:23:57Power punches.
00:23:58Chavez, 69 of 124, 56%.
00:24:01Arias, 42 of 98, 43%.
00:24:04It's starting to look like a movie fight.
00:24:15Rocky 6.
00:24:18Chavez has decided he's flying up, and he's going to just let it all go.
00:24:22What happens to him, George, if he runs out of wind here?
00:24:29Great, great.
00:24:30Stop back.
00:24:30Oh.
00:24:31Oh.
00:24:32Our words, unnecessary to embellish what you're looking at.
00:24:54If you don't appreciate this, you don't appreciate prize fighting.
00:24:57If you can hit a man this round, why wait until the next round to do it?
00:25:02Get him.
00:25:04You save it.
00:25:05What are you saving it for?
00:25:12This fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:25:19Can you imagine?
00:25:25There are moments when both fighters seem to get arm-weary
00:25:27for about 0, 3, 4 seconds.
00:25:29Then they go right back at it.
00:25:40Low blow by Chavez.
00:25:47Great right hand.
00:25:51Uppercut landed.
00:25:52Low blow again.
00:25:53Monty Oswald standing 12 or 15 feet away,
00:25:56and either didn't see the low blows
00:25:58or isn't terribly concerned about it.
00:26:02What a body-punching exhibition for Chavez.
00:26:06Goes to the left.
00:26:08That's his insurance policy.
00:26:10If he's going to get tired,
00:26:11his opponent will not have the energy to hurt him.
00:26:14Chavez grins and winks at George Foreman
00:26:17as if to say,
00:26:19hey, this is fun, George.
00:26:20Well, Mr. President, if you're watching,
00:26:33thank you.
00:26:34You helped to bring a tremendously entertaining fighter
00:26:36back into the USA.
00:26:38He's going to have to fight for it tonight,
00:26:40though nothing will be given.
00:26:41Oh, man.
00:26:43Aries gives no quarter.
00:26:44Aries banging a right hand to the side of Chavez's head.
00:26:47His best punt for the round.
00:26:52Chavez, imagine that.
00:26:54Chavez rediscovered the jab.
00:27:01Look.
00:27:02Can you hear me when I say move your head?
00:27:03Move your head.
00:27:04Okay, that's what I want you to do.
00:27:05I want you to move that head.
00:27:07Okay?
00:27:08Let's look at this, okay?
00:27:09Hey.
00:27:10Now,
00:27:12you have something this guy don't have.
00:27:14That's a jab.
00:27:15You understand me?
00:27:16This round here.
00:27:18I want you to use the jab a lot more, okay?
00:27:21Now, listen.
00:27:21When you throw that right hand,
00:27:23bring the hook back
00:27:24and then right back to the right hand.
00:27:25You got to go combinations with the guy.
00:27:27Okay?
00:27:27You can't just hit him with one shot.
00:27:29You're hurting him.
00:27:30You're hurting him with the one shot.
00:27:31Stay to the body when you close, too.
00:27:33Okay.
00:27:33And keep shooting up uppercuts.
00:27:35Now, you did good thing right here
00:27:36when you got on the road.
00:27:38Here's the action really in that round.
00:27:40This is not fast speed.
00:27:43This is real time.
00:27:46Two young men getting their shot
00:27:49for something big
00:27:50and trying to make the most of it.
00:27:5484 of 95 punches landed in the round
00:27:56with power shots.
00:27:58You heard Ronnie Shields.
00:27:59He's a chopper.
00:28:00He's a new trainer.
00:28:01Well, now, here's the timeout.
00:28:02Now he's a corner.
00:28:02He's got to be robbed in.
00:28:04All right.
00:28:05Too much Vaseline over the left side.
00:28:07Good to go.
00:28:08And you heard Ronnie Shields,
00:28:09Chavez, his new trainer,
00:28:11saying to Chavez,
00:28:12you have a jab.
00:28:14Why don't you use it?
00:28:15Shields has been working with Chavez
00:28:17to add more elements to his game,
00:28:19but he said, hey, in five weeks,
00:28:20not that much you can do.
00:28:22And now Monty Oswald recognizes
00:28:23because low blows are plying fast and furious.
00:28:26Harold, how do you have it through three?
00:28:27Okay, Jim, two rounds to one,
00:28:2929-28, Jesus Chavez.
00:28:32Jim, I thought he dropped enough right hands
00:28:33in that first round to win it.
00:28:35Juan Arias came back.
00:28:36Sensational second round.
00:28:38He won that.
00:28:39Jesus Chavez with a great right hand.
00:28:41One round, three, two to one.
00:28:43Jesus Chavez.
00:28:44This fight will definitely be determined
00:28:45on condition.
00:28:48And will.
00:28:49Or maybe superior technique
00:28:56because Chavez is the better-balanced,
00:28:59more accurate puncher.
00:29:00And just as I say that,
00:29:02Arias lands a colossal right hand
00:29:04to the side of Chavez's head.
00:29:06Well, occasionally, Chavez tries to coast a little bit.
00:29:10You throw a lot of hard body shots like that,
00:29:12and it's like running for five miles at high speed.
00:29:15And you've got to relax for one moment
00:29:16just to get your wind back.
00:29:19When he does, Arias has taken advantage of it.
00:29:31Juan Arias is a fighter we've never seen before.
00:29:34He's about as honest as they come.
00:29:36Takes punishment.
00:29:38Tries to retaliate.
00:29:41Good left.
00:29:42The body bites out.
00:29:43And Arias had to catch a breath after that one.
00:29:46It's been a balanced attack by Chavez.
00:29:58He's going to the body enough.
00:30:00Jab, hooks, right here.
00:30:02All the things you're supposed to do.
00:30:04How do you take the heart out of a man?
00:30:12That's another job altogether.
00:30:16Arias has got heart.
00:30:17Tons of it.
00:30:18Come on, man.
00:30:18Come on.
00:30:19Roll the work.
00:30:20As his trainer manager pointed out,
00:30:22he has nothing but road games.
00:30:25There's nobody watching boxing in Napa.
00:30:27So every time he's won,
00:30:29he's gone into somebody else's house to do it.
00:30:33Right hand all night.
00:30:36Chavez has been able to go on top with those right hands.
00:30:39Right hand, Tommy.
00:30:41Both fighters have walked the hard road to glory.
00:30:51Arias is still supporting many family members in Jalisco.
00:30:56Chavez, three and a half years in exile.
00:30:59Now they're pounding away at each other,
00:31:01trying to get into the spotlight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:31:04You are a goddamn fighter.
00:31:22You understand me?
00:31:24That's how you beat this guy up.
00:31:26Now look, keep beating this guy up for me like that, okay?
00:31:28Keep beating him up for me like that.
00:31:30Now look, you see, that jab,
00:31:32the jab is the key for you right now.
00:31:33This guy's tired, but he's a fighter.
00:31:36You understand?
00:31:36He's a warrior.
00:31:37He ain't gonna quit.
00:31:38You gotta make him quit.
00:31:39So you use the jab, keep using the jab.
00:31:41And keep doing what you're doing, okay?
00:31:43And look, this belt will be,
00:31:44I don't know what the fuck is wrong with him.
00:31:46Over here, look where you throw that hook.
00:31:47You step over here,
00:31:48look where you throw that right hand.
00:31:49Come on, baby.
00:31:51Don't be lazy for two seconds.
00:31:53Hands high.
00:31:53You can get this guy out here with one big punch,
00:31:55but you gotta look it in.
00:31:56Hear me?
00:31:57Yeah.
00:31:57Okay.
00:31:58Big deep breath.
00:32:02Keep working.
00:32:03You're doing fine.
00:32:05Don't be lazy.
00:32:07Lock it down, bro.
00:32:15Don't be lazy?
00:32:18Lazy?
00:32:19He threw 93 punches in that last round,
00:32:22even while getting raked
00:32:23with 49 power shots from Jesus Chavez.
00:32:26I find myself enjoying this fight tremendously,
00:32:36but also trying to project
00:32:38how Chavez would do against Floyd Mayweather.
00:32:44His punches haven't shown tremendous power,
00:32:47and he does get hit.
00:32:48Or maybe his punches have shown power,
00:33:05and he's just in against a guy with a granite chin
00:33:07and a lot of will.
00:33:07That's always possible because
00:33:10Arias has every reason
00:33:12to feel that he's unbeaten
00:33:15because of that one freakish loss,
00:33:18and unbeaten fighters are hard to beat.
00:33:21You heard Gary Salinger telling Arias
00:33:23that he could knock Chavez out
00:33:25with one big right hand.
00:33:26Arias just landed another right cross moments ago.
00:33:29Arias mentioned in a fighter meter yesterday
00:33:41that his nose has been broken a few times,
00:33:44and from the look of it tonight,
00:33:45I'd have to guess it might have been broken again.
00:33:48It's a great fighter's nose, Jim.
00:33:50And this is a broken-nosed kind of a fight
00:33:52on both sides of the ring.
00:33:55Right to the body by Chavez.
00:34:20That hurt.
00:34:21But he got some medicine back from Arias.
00:34:23I can't wear a jab, wear a jab.
00:34:29Come on.
00:34:35Chavez Porter told him to use his jab,
00:34:37and this is the time you use your jab.
00:34:39When you want to close,
00:34:40when you want to take a break,
00:34:42do it with your left jab.
00:34:43Don't just stand there and start getting hit back.
00:34:46Then you give Arias a lot of confidence
00:34:49that you're getting tired.
00:34:51Now the jab has started back by Chavez.
00:35:12Chavez, he's useless enough jab.
00:35:13Remembering what Ronnie Shields told him to do
00:35:16between rounds.
00:35:17And so you wonder,
00:35:18is Floyd Mayweather Jr. watching the fight,
00:35:21looking at the two men who are vying
00:35:23for the possible opportunity to meet him later this year?
00:35:25Yes, Floyd's watching,
00:35:27and surely thinking to himself,
00:35:29I'll never be in a fight like that one.
00:35:32I'm too pretty.
00:35:32Let me have a good stiff jab for you, okay?
00:35:41You can do that for me?
00:35:42The honor.
00:35:42Okay, the honor.
00:35:43No, no.
00:35:45And here.
00:35:46Well, right here.
00:35:48Whenever you get close,
00:35:49I want to the rolling.
00:35:50Keep rolling,
00:35:51because this guy's still a stunner
00:35:52and he's in the back of that head now, okay?
00:35:54The referee ain't calling nothing,
00:35:55so you got to take care of your own business.
00:35:57You understand?
00:35:58Get him out of here.
00:35:59Catch him in them big punches.
00:36:00When you throw them big punches to the head,
00:36:02dig down here, too.
00:36:04I don't want to throw it.
00:36:05Come on, baby.
00:36:05Come on.
00:36:06Come on, man.
00:36:06Take it out, come on.
00:36:14Which one of these warriors has the stamina
00:36:18or doesn't have the stamina
00:36:19to go at this pace for 12 rounds?
00:36:25Between the two of them in five rounds,
00:36:27they have landed 300 power shots.
00:36:30And there they trade them face-to-face.
00:36:39Come on, baby.
00:36:40That's it.
00:36:41Come on!
00:36:43Now we heard Ronnie Shields.
00:36:45Right here.
00:36:46Referee Monty Oswald.
00:36:48Come on, man.
00:36:50Giving Arians a chance to return
00:36:52to recover from low blows
00:36:53and deducting a point
00:36:54from the Jesus Chavez.
00:36:56One point.
00:36:57You got to keep him up, okay?
00:36:59You good to go?
00:37:00You good to go?
00:37:01Let's go.
00:37:03Between rounds,
00:37:04Ronnie Shields asked Chavez to roll.
00:37:06What was he talking about?
00:37:07Well, the only thing he can be doing
00:37:09is to try to stay a little close
00:37:11and just punch your left shoulder up
00:37:13and come back with your right hand.
00:37:14That's about all he can mean
00:37:16because the kid is not throwing in the left hook.
00:37:20Throwing these right hands on top of him.
00:37:22If you roll one and stay close,
00:37:23you can catch him.
00:37:27Losing that one twink on low blows
00:37:29seems to have ginned up Chavez's game.
00:37:33He wants to make it back.
00:37:34A big part of Chavez's attack
00:37:39is the body punch
00:37:40and you don't want to be hesitant
00:37:41about delivering your body shot,
00:37:43so that could throw him out.
00:37:51Harry is trying to slip punt.
00:37:53This slips right into a Chavez uppercut.
00:37:56And for the look of Arias's face,
00:38:06you wonder when he might begin
00:38:07to bust up and bleep.
00:38:10Because he is swollen
00:38:11on the outside of both eyes.
00:38:14The nose appears to be flattened
00:38:15and the rest of the skin is red.
00:38:19Well, for Chavez,
00:38:20he may have to settle down
00:38:21and realize I'm going to be here all night
00:38:24and it's going to take so many punches
00:38:26per round
00:38:26and I'm not going to knock this guy out
00:38:28as I would like to.
00:38:29It'd be ironic if it was...
00:38:30Take your time
00:38:31and just do what you did
00:38:32in the first round
00:38:33constantly over and over and over.
00:38:35After I so flatly stated
00:38:36in the first couple of rounds
00:38:38that it wouldn't go 12 at that pace,
00:38:40now we look like
00:38:41we may be headed into the late round.
00:38:45That was another left.
00:38:47It was real low for Chavez.
00:38:49The ref didn't say anything,
00:38:50but maybe he's waiting until he does.
00:38:53Straight right hand
00:38:54and Arias just comes right through it.
00:38:59Amazing display of courage
00:39:00by Juan Arias.
00:39:14When you have a boxing match
00:39:16that goes round after round
00:39:17and you throw them to the body
00:39:18hitting their balls like that,
00:39:19your hands are like
00:39:21swollen pieces of cauliflower now.
00:39:24Cauliflower hands, George.
00:39:26Yeah, if you ever saw a cauliflower,
00:39:29that's the way your hands look.
00:39:30All lumped up.
00:39:31All lumped up.
00:39:32I saw cauliflower at dinner
00:39:34earlier this evening.
00:39:35It was all lumped up.
00:39:36You don't see cauliflower ears anymore.
00:39:39You got to listen to me now.
00:39:41Okay?
00:39:41Listen to me.
00:39:43Hey, Sue.
00:39:44I don't want you to blow this fight.
00:39:45You understand?
00:39:45Yes, sir.
00:39:46I put somebody's chest, too, okay?
00:39:48No.
00:39:48I don't want you to blow this fight.
00:39:49You understand me?
00:39:50Forget it.
00:39:52Give me a little room to work here, buddy.
00:39:56Deep breath.
00:39:56Okay.
00:39:58Okay.
00:39:59You're in this fight, buddy.
00:40:00You're in this fight.
00:40:01You got to give me everything in your heart, Juan.
00:40:03Yeah.
00:40:03Everything in your heart, buddy.
00:40:04Okay?
00:40:05Keep your hands high.
00:40:06He's slowing down.
00:40:07His power's slowing down.
00:40:09You hear me?
00:40:10Yeah.
00:40:10We're wearing him down, okay?
00:40:12You're wearing him down.
00:40:13Come on.
00:40:13We got 12 rounds in us.
00:40:14If we got to go 12 rounds,
00:40:16you keep beating him.
00:40:19Upcoming the blow that caused the point
00:40:21after several previous low blows
00:40:23for Chavez.
00:40:25Second down, folks.
00:40:26By CompuBox, numbers in round six.
00:40:33Juan Arias threw 100 punches,
00:40:36but he took 52.
00:40:38Chavez landing 52 of 90.
00:40:40Harold, how do you have a group there?
00:40:42Okay, Jim.
00:40:43I got a 57-56 four rounds to do.
00:40:46Jesus Chavez.
00:40:47I think Monty Oswald put Juan Arias right back in the fight.
00:40:50And, you know, Jim,
00:40:51I was thinking the exact same thing
00:40:53that George Foreman said
00:40:54when Jesus Chavez lost that point.
00:40:56It was the third time Oswald warned him
00:40:58for that low blow.
00:41:00All of a sudden,
00:41:01Jesus Chavez switched his attack to the head.
00:41:03It certainly wasn't as effective.
00:41:05I mean,
00:41:06he was storming through the first five rounds
00:41:08with a body attack.
00:41:09And when Oswald took that point,
00:41:11all of a sudden,
00:41:11Jesus Chavez switched the attack upstairs,
00:41:14was reluctant to throw body punches,
00:41:15and I thought that Arias wasn't the speed round.
00:41:20Chavez has gone back to his left jab,
00:41:23and he's doing a good job of jabbing.
00:41:24If you want to coast,
00:41:26that jab is the way to do it.
00:41:27He was able to throw a right to the body
00:41:29by way of a good left jab.
00:41:31Ah, that's the role he was looking for.
00:41:41Now, Chavez has Arias afraid to throw a right hand,
00:41:46thinking he's going to count.
00:41:46This has become a war of attrition.
00:41:56There's blood on the skull of Jesus Chavez
00:41:59above his hair,
00:42:00and I can see it now.
00:42:01The blood is coming from
00:42:02just inside the hairline of Juan Arias.
00:42:05So, apparently,
00:42:06the two heads came together at some point,
00:42:09and Arias has taken a butt
00:42:10that has caught him inside the hairline.
00:42:13When you're able to land good left jab,
00:42:17you can do so many other things behind you.
00:42:19You can fake it,
00:42:21throw a hook,
00:42:22make the guy follow you around,
00:42:24lead right hand,
00:42:25go back to his left side.
00:42:27All of these things can happen
00:42:28if you get a good left jab going,
00:42:31as Chavez has.
00:42:34Although he doesn't fight like a matador,
00:42:36Chavez calls himself the matador
00:42:39because his first boxing club
00:42:41as an amateur
00:42:43was called the matador.
00:42:46And now he's trying to box
00:42:48a little bit more
00:42:49than slugging as he was before.
00:42:54No body punches
00:42:55have taken effect now.
00:42:57And he got away with a low blow
00:42:58that was hidden from referee Monty Oswald
00:43:00by Arias' body.
00:43:02You know the body punches
00:43:04have taken effect
00:43:05when your opponent
00:43:07is standing right out there
00:43:08in the middle of the ring
00:43:09and not doing anything
00:43:10but looking at you.
00:43:11During his three and a half years in prison,
00:43:17Jesus Chavez smoked two packs of cigarettes today.
00:43:20As he said yesterday,
00:43:22from boxing conditioning,
00:43:24I have managed to eliminate
00:43:25the effects of nicotine in my body.
00:43:27That's for sure.
00:43:28Look at the stamina
00:43:29both fighters are showing
00:43:30at this point in the fight.
00:43:36Get the mouthpiece.
00:43:39Okay.
00:43:40Jesus.
00:43:41Yeah, that's fine.
00:43:43Now look, listen to me.
00:43:46Listen to me, okay?
00:43:48Hey.
00:43:49Give me a deep breath.
00:43:50Give me a deep breath.
00:43:50Give me some water.
00:43:51Give me some water, Richard.
00:43:52Hey.
00:43:53How you feeling?
00:43:53I feel good.
00:43:54Okay, look.
00:43:55You're looking good.
00:43:55You're boxing good, okay?
00:43:56Look.
00:43:57You're fighting two people in there.
00:43:59You understand?
00:44:00But look,
00:44:00we can't worry about
00:44:01who we're fighting, okay?
00:44:02He's going to have to hit him
00:44:03with some good shots, Juan,
00:44:05and get him off of it.
00:44:06You've got to make him pay.
00:44:07Yeah.
00:44:07Come on.
00:44:07You know what you do best.
00:44:08What do you do best?
00:44:09You punch.
00:44:10You punch, okay?
00:44:11You've got to go do that for me.
00:44:13You've got to go do that for me.
00:44:14I need water.
00:44:15Water.
00:44:16Water.
00:44:16Water.
00:44:17Give it to you, Gary.
00:44:18Come on, baby.
00:44:24Take it down, coach.
00:44:32Go.
00:44:32Let's go.
00:44:33One difference between the two fighters
00:44:35through seven rounds.
00:44:36Only Jesus Chavez shows a gap.
00:44:39Landing 78 out of 201.
00:44:42Juan Arias has thrown more.
00:44:44He's thrown 260,
00:44:45but he's only landed 20 of them.
00:44:48Aria's better with his right hand
00:44:51than with his left.
00:44:53Chavez equally adept with both hands.
00:44:55Chavez is doing what Arias
00:44:57should be doing with his long reach.
00:44:59Long reach.
00:45:00He's boxing.
00:45:02That's what you want to do.
00:45:03Box, box, box.
00:45:06And I mentioned how Arias' face
00:45:08is beginning to show the effects
00:45:10of the constant beating from Chavez.
00:45:13Now the right eye swells grotesquely,
00:45:16and it begins to look as though
00:45:19Arias is going to have difficulty
00:45:21finishing the fight.
00:45:26That's the eye, Jim.
00:45:27That was cut when he lost his only fight.
00:45:33Arias' corner better start looking in now
00:45:35to see what they're going to do
00:45:36to help their boy.
00:45:37He's tough.
00:45:38He's not going to give up.
00:45:40This is the time you need
00:45:41a compassionate corner
00:45:42to look out for you.
00:45:43You think that Arias
00:45:48has no more chance, George?
00:45:51Well, he's taking a lot of punishment,
00:45:53and it's not like he's slick
00:45:54and he can barb and weave
00:45:55and not make it stop happening.
00:45:58Or that he's a dynamite puncher.
00:46:01Stop it.
00:46:03Yeah, that's a good point, George.
00:46:05He's landed his best big right-hand shot
00:46:07at least a half-dozen times,
00:46:08and it's still no effect on Chavez.
00:46:10So it's hard to imagine
00:46:11that Arias is going to pull this out
00:46:13with a giant knockout.
00:46:15Unless Chavez were to make a big mistake.
00:46:17And he hasn't shown that tendency.
00:46:19Chavez left hook by Chavez.
00:46:21Taking shots now.
00:46:23He's staying close,
00:46:23looking at what he's doing.
00:46:25Then he's open in,
00:46:27puts all his body into every shot.
00:46:29Great.
00:46:30Step back.
00:46:30If you have a tough fighter like that,
00:46:34you look out for him.
00:46:35Don't make him decide he's going to quit.
00:46:36Some of us, you have to stay from ourselves.
00:46:44Well, Gary Sullinger is one of those compassionate guys.
00:46:47He found a young man who wanted this
00:46:50and was willing to work,
00:46:51has worked with him for 10 years or more.
00:46:54He says that Juan Arias is like family to him.
00:46:57Sport is populated by great people like Sullinger,
00:47:00but as George points out,
00:47:01Sullinger may have to make a tough decision
00:47:04on behalf of his fighter in the next four rounds.
00:47:08Arias became a fighter
00:47:09when he's got into a lot of fights playing soccer,
00:47:12which is his first laugh.
00:47:15And eventually they decided
00:47:16to see if he can be a real fighter
00:47:19and he found his way
00:47:20into Sullinger's little gym in Napa.
00:47:26Big left hook upstairs by Arias.
00:47:28Best left-hand punch he's thrown in the fight.
00:47:34Just when you count him out,
00:47:36he shows the courage again.
00:47:37Here is the man who is going to be fighting
00:47:39against Floyd Mayweather Jr.,
00:47:41Carlos Hernandez,
00:47:42and his beautiful wife,
00:47:45who is incidentally a psychologist.
00:47:47He's been working with him
00:47:48on some psychological aspects
00:47:50of his upcoming competition
00:47:51with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:47:57Emmanuel Stewart, Jim,
00:47:58who briefly trained.
00:48:00Come on, baby.
00:48:01You've got a champion's heart.
00:48:02Give me what you got.
00:48:03He's never seen a closer relationship
00:48:04between a fighter and his wife.
00:48:06Okay?
00:48:07You had him hurt there at the end.
00:48:09I need you to do it again.
00:48:12He's got a lot of guts to do it.
00:48:14Come on, Juan.
00:48:14Keep going.
00:48:15Catch him with them good shots.
00:48:16You can do it.
00:48:17We can catch him one big shot
00:48:18and get him out of here.
00:48:19You hear me?
00:48:20Coffee, coffee.
00:48:24Come on, come on.
00:48:25Rollins are trying to express hope
00:48:27to the fighter.
00:48:28Arias didn't look like he believed it.
00:48:31That cuts in a bad place.
00:48:32Now, this is why I hired Angelo Dundee
00:48:34in my latter years.
00:48:36Angelo, don't let me hurt myself.
00:48:41George, you were hard to get out of there,
00:48:43though, George.
00:48:45But Angelo would have stepped in
00:48:47and said, that's enough
00:48:47and stood up to George Foreman.
00:48:52Well, it's only within the last half a round or so
00:48:55that Arias has begun to look discouraged.
00:48:58Prior to that, he was continually spirited,
00:49:00but you can see him backing off now.
00:49:03Give him up.
00:49:05His face and body showing the ill effects
00:49:08of the constant tattoo from Chavez.
00:49:11And now Arias not throwing punches back.
00:49:16Kind of hope the referee will do for Arias
00:49:20what his corner has so far been reluctant to do.
00:49:23Yeah, you see, this isn't necessary.
00:49:25The guy's tough.
00:49:26He's got a career.
00:49:28Come back another day.
00:49:30The biggest paycheque Juan Arias ever earned
00:49:32before tonight was $7,500.
00:49:35Tonight he's getting $40,000,
00:49:37and he said, gosh, with a huge smile,
00:49:39I feel like I've made it.
00:49:40He has earned his $40,000.
00:49:45He's in with one clever guy.
00:49:56Chavez knows exactly what he's doing.
00:49:58And Chavez hot-shotting now,
00:50:07countering those right-hand efforts
00:50:09with little left hooks inside
00:50:11that just rip away at what's left of Arias' face.
00:50:25Fans at ringside are starting to urge
00:50:27the referee to stop the fight.
00:50:35Every time Arias starts
00:50:37one of his big right-hand efforts,
00:50:39Chavez just slips inside of it
00:50:40and rips him with a left hook.
00:50:42It's getting too easy for Jesus Chavez.
00:50:44Whenever Chavez jabs,
00:50:58it turns into an ordinary fight for him.
00:51:01Well, that's what Ronnie Fields told him would be the case.
00:51:04The courage of the fighter from Napa
00:51:16continues to take your breath away.
00:51:19But he is weary.
00:51:29Backfield champ.
00:51:40You all right?
00:51:42Yeah.
00:51:42Are you all right?
00:51:43Can we get him?
00:51:46Big deep breath.
00:51:48Big deep breath.
00:51:49It's a tenth round, Juan.
00:51:50Open the trunks.
00:51:56Big deep breath.
00:51:57All right.
00:51:58Okay.
00:51:58Big deep breath.
00:52:00Now listen, okay?
00:52:01Listen.
00:52:02You got to show me something around my hand.
00:52:03I don't want to stop this fight.
00:52:05You're cut.
00:52:05Can you see good?
00:52:06Yeah.
00:52:06Don't make me stop this fight.
00:52:08Okay?
00:52:09Jab, jab, jab, jab, jab.
00:52:10Right hand, hook right hand,
00:52:12and then just keep punching.
00:52:13Okay?
00:52:14Give me a little drink of Drake.
00:52:17Okay?
00:52:18And look.
00:52:19Stay away from that body.
00:52:20I don't care.
00:52:21Stay away from the body.
00:52:22Okay?
00:52:23Margarita.
00:52:23Margarita.
00:52:25Let's go now.
00:52:29Ronnie Shields telling
00:52:30Jesus Chavez to stay away from the body
00:52:32because he's been warned once.
00:52:33About the time.
00:52:34Or rather, has been warned three times
00:52:36and has lost a point once
00:52:37for low blows.
00:52:38Harold, how do you have it through nine?
00:52:40Okay, Jim.
00:52:4187, 83.
00:52:42Okay, you got it.
00:52:43Seven rounds to two.
00:52:44Jesus Chavez.
00:52:45I think that he's won rounds
00:52:46seven, eight, and nine in a row.
00:52:48Harry's, you know,
00:52:49stumbling around like he's ready to go.
00:52:51So Jesus Chavez dominates the last round.
00:52:53He's got a four-point lead.
00:53:01Big CompuBox numbers for Chavez
00:53:03piling up by the round.
00:53:04Those numbers tell the story of the fight.
00:53:11So, too, does Arius' face.
00:53:13In the old days, they would match us
00:53:26with some opponents like Arius.
00:53:28They call them war horses.
00:53:31Old trout horses.
00:53:32If you get by them,
00:53:33you'd be in shape for a title pack.
00:53:36Arius is definitely a trout horse.
00:53:39And Chavez is looking for a title stop.
00:53:42He'll be in shape if nothing else.
00:53:44No way you can spar
00:53:48and get this kind of conditioning.
00:53:50What courage on the part of Arius
00:53:52who continues to hunt Beck
00:53:53looking for a shot at winning the fight
00:53:56with one big punt.
00:53:57He landed a right hand on Chavez right there.
00:53:59and the U.S.
00:54:21I have a chance here to watch
00:54:44his skills George he's not just a brawler an excellent job of boxing tonight
00:54:57sometimes fighters particularly Mexican fighters get stereotyped as brawlers as
00:55:04we saw with Antonio Barrera and then they show us they have other skills
00:55:14no gonna fight the distance gallant brave beyond brain which isn't always the best
00:55:40things you're a fighter but you admire that's how you show people you're a
00:55:52champion buddy how you feel
00:56:05big deeper how you feel champ tell me how you feel big deeper close your eyes okay
00:56:11we got two rounds okay you're wearing him down you're catching a good shot okay I
00:56:15know you're having to dig deep baby but this is what you are okay this is what
00:56:19you are another me by fighting with this guy like that no more okay just keep
00:56:24boxing him now baby you have it you're home free now you understand keep boxing
00:56:29this guy now jab jab jab right hand hook head movement okay
00:56:33they slowed in the 10th round jab is only through 50 punches landed 25 areas only through 59 punches these two guys had been throwing upwards of 80 90 100 punches per round throughout the
00:56:57the 10th round
00:56:59now Ronnie Shields asking
00:57:01he takes his job is to move and box the last two rounds
00:57:06no contest when Chavez box got a good left jab overhand right
00:57:22the last two rounds
00:57:24falls everything when he decides to get to mix it up
00:57:27we have to box against Mayweather or would he be better off going and try to brawl against a boxer like Mayweather
00:57:40well he's not gonna outbox stay with
00:57:44well he's not gonna outbox stay with
00:57:47that's logic
00:57:47that's logic
00:58:01Go, go! Off the air! Off the air!
00:58:05Right back up! Right back over the shoulder!
00:58:09Let's just get it!
00:58:26Doing exactly what it's going to tell him to do.
00:58:28Yeah, move around. Light on your feet.
00:58:32Aries now fighting for the only fight he appears to be able to win.
00:58:39A fight for self-respect.
00:58:42Referee Monty Oswald ruling that Kavis' foot was on Arias' foot
00:58:48when Arias was knocked down by the body punch.
00:58:51So it's a flip, not a knockdown.
00:58:54Kavis was beginning to celebrate thinking that he's wearing Arias down
00:59:00to the point where he might relent.
00:59:04Those love hooks to the body, I don't understand how Arias can take it.
00:59:15Left hook upstairs there.
00:59:22Brake! Step back lane! Brake!
00:59:24This definitely is not...
00:59:32Floyd Mayweather is trying to fight.
00:59:34He goes fighting.
00:59:36Classy street fighting.
00:59:38This is street fighting.
00:59:40Stand up.
00:59:48He goes up.
00:59:49Stand up.
00:59:51Stand up.
00:59:52Okay, now give me my hand, of course.
00:59:53Hey, look...
00:59:54Hey!
00:59:55I understand you're a warrior, baby.
00:59:56But look.
00:59:57You just keep boxin' from me, okay?
00:59:58You gotta get him out of here.
01:00:00Okay?
01:00:01Behind on points, you gotta get him out of here.
01:00:03Can you give me three minutes of hard punches?
01:00:04Yes.
01:00:05Okay, I need you to roll.
01:00:06Okay, I need you to roll.
01:00:08I need you to bend your knees and dig hard punches.
01:00:10You're standing straight up with him.
01:00:12You're losing all his power down here.
01:00:13We got one.
01:00:14I just was moving him out a little bit right here.
01:00:15That's all I want to see, okay?
01:00:18Don't stand by the front of him now.
01:00:19We're too late in the fight for that.
01:00:21You wear a hair so you ain't got no problems right there, okay?
01:00:23All right.
01:00:24Come on.
01:00:25It's your last round.
01:00:26He's going to come strong.
01:00:27If you've got to tie him up early, you tie him up early,
01:00:29and you go right to work on him.
01:00:30Okay?
01:00:32Mouthpiece.
01:00:33Was it a slip or a trip?
01:00:36No, it was a punch.
01:00:40And could have been called a knockdown.
01:00:42Could have been a knockdown.
01:00:44Arias squared up.
01:00:45He was off balance when he was hit.
01:00:47It was a legitimate knockdown.
01:00:50Okay?
01:00:50Harold, how do you have it going to the 12th?
01:00:52Okay, Jim.
01:00:53I've got a 106-102, eight rounds to three.
01:00:57Jesus Chavez.
01:00:57I thought that one hour is playing close.
01:01:00I've got a touch round when I went toe-to-toe.
01:01:02But the 11th round, Jesus Chavez boxed beautifully.
01:01:05He had a big lead going into that 11th round.
01:01:09He won that.
01:01:10So he's got at least a four-point lead on my scorecard going into the final round.
01:01:15I have a much bigger lead than that, Harold.
01:01:17If you were with us in rounds one and two, you know that the blow-by-blow announcer flatly stated that at that pace, the fight couldn't go 12 rounds.
01:01:28So, of course, here they are in the 12th, having fought pretty much the whole way at that pace.
01:01:33In fact, Juan Arias, through 11 rounds, has thrown more than 1,000 punches.
01:01:391,016.
01:01:40And may feel as though Chavez has hit him low 1,000 times, although it hasn't been that many.
01:01:46Okay, you ready?
01:01:53You ready?
01:01:53Go.
01:01:59Left hook wobbling Arias and sending him back three steps.
01:02:05You wonder how Arias has stayed on his feet?
01:02:10You attribute it to extraordinary courage.
01:02:13The kind of courage, basically unique surprise fighters.
01:02:27What a body shot, right to the body.
01:02:31Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, stay on him, Juan.
01:02:39Great, great.
01:02:40Got back, Wayne.
01:02:43Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
01:02:46Look, look, look.
01:02:48That's his 6-minute day.
01:02:52Come on, come on.
01:02:55Come on, come on, over to the top.
01:02:57Less than a minute to go.
01:02:58A fighter like Jesus Chavez, fighting in this aggressive, man-style boxing envelope of his,
01:03:08would have to search long and hard to find a gamer more willing, more courageous opponent than Juan Arias.
01:03:14But it appears to have been a clear Chavez victory, setting him up for possible bigger things down the road.
01:03:21Perhaps the most impressive part of this, Jim, is that he has showed that he has the stamina after all the stops and starts in his career.
01:03:31He's gone 12 hard rounds.
01:03:38And continued to work through the 12 rounds, even showed us he could adjust his game, make some adjustments in there.
01:03:47Continue to think well during the 12 hard rounds.
01:03:51What I like most about it, Chavez had to fight in the bag, so to speak. He didn't try to coach.
01:04:07Kept on being aggressive, landing the left jab, as the corner told him, but digging to the body, coming up to the head with hooks and right hands.
01:04:14That tells you this guy intends to go on long ways in boxing.
01:04:17That's what it is.
01:04:18No more.
01:04:19No coasting.
01:04:21No coasting.
01:04:21No more.
01:04:23No more.
01:04:24Wonderful.
01:04:25Good work, very good.
01:04:26Very good.
01:04:27No, no, no, no.
01:04:29Sorry.
01:04:30Good work.
01:04:31Good work.
01:04:32Somewhere in a dressing room there, an ice pack, or several of them, waiting for Juan Arias.
01:04:40Well, Chavez doesn't look as marked on the outside, Jim.
01:04:51Trust me, he's got some bruises on the inside, but a victory always helps to heal them a little
01:04:57bit faster.
01:04:58You okay?
01:04:59Yeah.
01:05:00You okay?
01:05:01Yeah.
01:05:02Look.
01:05:03Arias goes to all four sides of the ring, to genuflect.
01:05:07Thanking God for the courage that allowed him to finish the fight.
01:05:12Hey, you show 50-year-old warrior, buddy.
01:05:13That's what it's all about.
01:05:14Unbelievable.
01:05:15Yeah, but what have you shown people that you are?
01:05:19Hey, HPL will fight you.
01:05:20Good job.
01:05:21You won every round.
01:05:22He won every round.
01:05:23You won every round.
01:05:24Even the round that took away from him, you won every round.
01:05:25You hear them telling Chavez that he won every round.
01:05:28I had him winning ten and a half rounds, to draw in one round at which the point was
01:05:43taken away from him.
01:05:44Yeah.
01:05:45A draw in one round at which a point was taken away from him.
01:05:49No low blows.
01:05:55Harold Letterman was a little bit more generous to Juan Arias.
01:06:00Finding a few rounds along the way to give to the California fighter.
01:06:04Three to be exact.
01:06:09Arias still able to wink out of that left eye,
01:06:12or at least an attempted wink.
01:06:14You fought him over your money.
01:06:16I don't know who owns the body shop where he works,
01:06:19but I'm sure you're watching out there.
01:06:22Give the kid another week off.
01:06:24He'll need it.
01:06:25All right, let's go to Michael Buffer and find out who won the fight.
01:06:30Ladies and gentlemen, we go to the Budweiser scorecards.
01:06:33All three judges scored the bout 117 to 110 for the winner by unanimous decision
01:06:40and still the NABF champion,
01:06:43still ranked number one in the world in the super featherweight division,
01:06:47Jesus El Matador Chavez.
01:06:59Juan El Marro Arias and Jesus El Marro Arias.
01:07:05Final CompuBox numbers, and you can see the extraordinarily high punch totals from both fighters.
01:07:20More than 1,000 punches thrown by Chavez, more than 1,100 from Arias.
01:07:26The neat doubling of the connect percentage by Chavez.
01:07:2950% for him, only 25% for the fighter from Napa, California.
01:07:35Jabs.
01:07:36Chavez was the one who showed the greater all-around game
01:07:40and responded with a high number of jabs in the closing rounds
01:07:44when trainer Ronnie Shields asked him to do so.
01:07:46147 out of 365.
01:07:49Arias threw more jabs, but landed only 7% of them,
01:07:53despite the fact that he had the longer reach.
01:07:56Just not quick enough with his jab and power punches.
01:08:01When a guy hits you with 55% of his power punches,
01:08:05if he has any pop at all, you're going to show it.
01:08:08And, thus, the look on Arias' face at the end of the fight.
01:08:13Uh, George?
01:08:14The question there was,
01:08:15Jesus Chavez as a possible future opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr.?
01:08:20What did he show you?
01:08:21Well, like, Mayweather's got a long ways to go tonight.
01:08:24And, uh, we want to make certain that he's the guy in the driver's seat after the fight coming up.
01:08:28That's right.
01:08:29So I don't want to go too far ahead, uh, counting chickens before they hatch.
01:08:32Yeah, Mayweather with a tough assignment coming up against Carlos Hernandez.
01:08:36Uh, Larry, you, uh, told us the fascinating story of Chavez
01:08:41and everything he's been through in his life to get to this point tonight.
01:08:45Uh, your reflections on his performance.
01:08:48I was impressed that he was able to go so hard and so long.
01:08:52Um, I don't know that he has the kind of punching power that you're going to need to, to back off Mayweather.
01:08:59Um, and I think Mayweather doesn't have that tough of an assignment tonight.
01:09:04We shall see.
01:09:06George Foreman being very disciplined about not looking too far ahead.
01:09:09And, uh, Larry takes the more popular view that Mayweather ought to be seen as a huge favorite.
01:09:14He is, incidentally, a 30 to 1 betting favorite, uh, in this fight upcoming against Carlos Hernandez.
01:09:20So you've seen Jesus Chavez as he emerges from his long exile and pounds out a victory over Juan Arias.
