00:00:01Back live at ringside with two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman.
00:00:04George, Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a fascinating quote a couple of days ago.
00:00:07He said, I'm the best boxer in boxing, so therefore, I'm the best athlete in all of sports
00:00:13because boxers face unique pressures to win every time out,
00:00:17not to mention, of course, the punishment that they take.
00:00:19Is young Floyd on to something here, or is this just youthful exuberance as he comes back home?
00:00:24Well, we just want him to be the best boxer and best athlete tonight.
00:00:27I think everybody at home is looking for that as well.
00:00:30He's putting a lot of pressure on himself to perform as he moves up through the ranks of the pound-for-pound list
00:00:36and continues to say that he ought to be ranked up there with or ahead of Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, Roy Jones.
00:00:44Larry, Mayweather has had a lot of success in the ring despite many distractions outside the ring.
00:00:49Does that mean that he has dodged the too-much-too-soon bullet
00:00:53that clipped fighters like Diego Corrales, David Reed, and Fernando Vargas?
00:01:00Given his talent, he probably caught the bullet in his teeth.
00:01:04Here's another questionary tale.
00:01:07The James Dean of boxing, Stanley Ketchel.
00:01:11When he was 21 years old, Stanley Ketchel won the middleweight championship of the world.
00:01:16Two years later, he challenged the heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, and stunningly knocked him down.
00:01:22Johnson got up, shocked, and then shocked Ketchel, knocking him out.
00:01:31Less than a year later, Ketchel was shot dead by the boyfriend of a man he was, of a girl that he, Ketchel, was having breakfast with.
00:01:43He remains a legend in the sport, so much so that many people still visit his grave site right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
00:01:54In another way, Jim, Floyd Mayweather has come home to Grand Rapids to enhance himself in the eyes of the public
00:02:02by having a big crowd like this, by showing his stuff, trying to win over fans,
00:02:09which is a big part of what a prizefighter has to do.
00:02:13Now, if he can only avoid the wrong breakfast partner, as Ketchel failed to do.
00:02:18Tale of the tape now for Floyd Mayweather Jr. against Carlos Fernandez.
00:02:23And you can see that Mayweather is precocious.
00:02:27At age 24, he has risen to near the top of the sport.
00:02:30Fernandez, age 30, has waited a long time for an opportunity like this.
00:02:35They are separated in height by two inches in Mayweather's favor, six and a half inches in reach.
00:02:40In Mayweather's favor, he weighed in right at the 130-pound limit
00:02:43and unofficially will enter the ring tonight at 139, two pounds heavier than his opponent.
00:02:50Bunch stat numbers, Larry.
00:02:51Take a look at their activity against Gennaro Hernandez,
00:02:55the former junior lightweight champion.
00:02:58Both of them have fought.
00:03:00Hernandez, much more activity,
00:03:03but you can't be that active against a fighter like Mayweather.
00:03:09And jab-wise, it's not even a rumor.
00:03:12Final round, Jim.
00:03:14All right, Harold, as you watch tonight,
00:03:16you can log on to HBO.com slash boxing for live trainer audio.
00:03:20You can choose which trainer and cornerman you want to listen to.
00:03:24You can also see CompuBox punch stat numbers as they mount up during the fight.
00:03:28Join an open chat room to talk with fellow boxing fans and answer the question,
00:03:33who do you think will win to become undisputed middleweight champion this fall?
00:03:37Will it be Bernard Hopkins or Felix Trinidad?
00:03:39We'll give you the results of our website poll at the end of tonight's telecast.
00:03:44So while you're watching Floyd Mayweather Jr.,
00:03:47tell us who you think will win Hopkins Trinidad.
00:03:50Here comes Carlos Hernandez.
00:03:52He did have a title opportunity earlier against his very close friend,
00:03:57Gennaro Hernandez.
00:03:58And Gennaro won virtually every round in the fight to nearly whitewash Carlos.
00:04:05Hernandez is being trained for this fight by Emilia Rousseau,
00:04:22who was the trainer of the great middleweight champion, Carlos Monzon.
00:04:29Emmanuel Stewart has trained Hernandez.
00:04:36So was Jackie McCoy, an outstanding trainer in California.
00:04:40What do they see in them?
00:04:41Why do they want to keep training him?
00:04:44Well, for one thing, he's a terrific guy.
00:04:47About as engaging a young man as we've ever spoken to in fighter meetings.
00:04:51For another, he's won 33 out of 36 fights, 21 by KO,
00:04:55and has a good chin himself, never having been knocked out.
00:05:01He acknowledges that he couldn't conceivably outbox Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:05:06He says, I'm going to have to come in there tonight and make it a fight.
00:05:11And here comes pretty boy Floyd.
00:05:14This has been less of a sentimental journey home
00:05:19for Floyd Mayweather Jr. than a business trip home.
00:05:27When he fought here last, a couple of years ago,
00:05:31the place was filled to the rafters
00:05:34when they charged $50 for ringside seat.
00:05:39Tonight, $200 for ringside seat.
00:05:42And perhaps 80% capacity.
00:05:47And the forbidding common opponent comparison for Hernandez
00:05:50is that when Mayweather Jr. fought against Gennaro Hernandez,
00:05:55he whitewashed Gennaro in much the same way Gennaro had whitewashed Carlos Hernandez.
00:06:00All part of the record that's 25-0 with 19 knockouts.
00:06:04His last performance against Diego Corrales was simply devastating.
00:06:09Knocked Corrales down six times.
00:06:13Let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer
00:06:15with the official introductions.

00:06:52Peter Tremotera,
00:06:54and Robert Watson.
00:06:55And when the bell rings,
00:06:57the man in charge of the action,
00:06:59working for the 27th time
00:07:01in a world title bout,
00:07:03Dale Grable.
00:07:04And now for the thousands in attendance
00:07:08and the millions watching around the world on HBO,
00:07:13ladies and gentlemen,

00:07:27Introducing first,
00:07:28fighting out of the blue corner,
00:07:30wearing black, white, and blue.
00:07:31He weighed in at 128 and one-half pounds.
00:07:36His professional record consists of 36 pounds
00:07:39with 33 victories,
00:07:41including 21 knockouts.
00:07:43And he has only two losses with a draw.
00:07:46Ladies and gentlemen,
00:07:47from Soyapano, San Salvador, El Salvador,
00:07:51here is the challenger,
00:07:54Carlos Famoso Hernandez.
00:08:04And across the ring,
00:08:05fighting out of the red corner,
00:08:07wearing white, black, and red,
00:08:10and weighing in at 130 pounds.
00:08:13His professional record,
00:08:15a perfect one.
00:08:1625 bouts,
00:08:1925 victories,
00:08:20including 19 knockouts.
00:08:22And he is recognized,
00:08:25pound for pound,
00:08:26among the very best fighters in the world today.
00:08:31Ladies and gentlemen,
00:08:33presenting the pride of Grand Rapids, Michigan,
00:08:37the reigning and defending undefeated
00:08:41super featherweight champion of the world,
00:08:45pretty boy,
00:08:47Floyd Mayweather!
00:08:57Gentlemen,
00:08:58you were given your instructions in dressing room.
00:09:00Listen to my commands at all times.
00:09:02Protect yourself at all times.
00:09:04Good luck to both of you.
00:09:05Touch gloves,
00:09:06come on and do it.
00:09:07Floyd Jr. is trained now by his uncle Roger,
00:09:12a former champion.
00:09:15Roger is competitive with his brother, Floyd Sr.
00:09:21And from what we've heard,
00:09:23he wants to see a relatively fast knockout tonight.
00:09:27Let's see if we get it.
00:09:31George Pretty Boy Floyd is wearing leather trucks.
00:09:35I don't think I've ever seen that before.
00:09:39This is an awkward position for Floyd Mayweather to be in.
00:09:42First, he's the bigger guy,
00:09:44and he's not an underdog.
00:09:46Some fighters,
00:09:47it's hard to fight from that position
00:09:49because you've got to go out there and prove something.
00:09:52Whenever he's the underdog and the smaller guy,
00:09:54you can see some good from him.
00:09:56First time Mayweather headed the ring with Diego Corrales in January.
00:10:14That fight was regarded by the oddsmakers as pretty much a pick'em fight.
00:10:19But within the first two minutes,
00:10:21you could see the stunning difference in speed and mobility
00:10:25between Mayweather and Corrales,
00:10:27and the outcome of the fight was clear within the early rounds.
00:10:31We see that Floyd is standing more flat-footed,
00:10:34trying to get more power into his punches.
00:10:37You may recall to him that when he fought here two years ago,
00:10:40there was a 12-round fight against a fighter named Rios
00:10:44who was really just there to survive.
00:10:47Floyd was not happy about that outcome.
00:10:51So he wants to give his hometown fans a bit of a show.
00:10:58Probably one of the most foolish things a boxer can do
00:11:01is go out and try to please hometown fans in general.
00:11:05You've got to go out there and concentrate on winning.
00:11:07I mean, once you step over that boundary as a performer,
00:11:11and then that's when bad things can happen to you.
00:11:13Remember Evander Holyfield almost losing his title
00:11:16to Smokin' Burt Cooper in Atlanta?
00:11:18Got dropped.
00:11:19Yep.
00:11:20Smiling to the audience.
00:11:22That's right. Playing to the crowd.
00:11:23Step back, please. Get checked.
00:11:25And there's Floyd winking at George Foreman.
00:11:28Second fighter tonight to wink at George.
00:11:33Floyd can get knockouts, but he's got to let them happen.
00:11:35Don't go out reaching for knockouts.
00:11:37They come to him.
00:11:38I think against top-class opponents,
00:11:44George, he thinks that way too,
00:11:45as we saw against Gennaro Hernandez and Diego Corrales.
00:11:53That's right.
00:11:54Against both Hernandez and Corrales,
00:11:56he boxed, and the knockout eventually came.
00:11:59Now he's jabbing to the bottom,
00:12:01and he's having to move backwards a little bit.
00:12:03That helps him a little bit.
00:12:04He's not an aggressor.
00:12:06Let the fight come to you.
00:12:07Go, go, go!
00:12:09Looping right hand lands for Hernandez.
00:12:15Let go, man. Let go, man.
00:12:17Brick, snap on you.
00:12:19What his new trainer is working on for Hernandez
00:12:22is a way to try to get inside
00:12:24without being exposed too much.
00:12:29And so far, he seems to be pretty successful at it.
00:12:31He's got a little bit more and breaking down the butt.
00:12:42He's going to fight you this way before Gennaro.
00:12:45He's got four rounds of hard work.
00:12:47After that, the moment's going to shut down anyway.
00:12:51Contestame. Contestame.
00:12:53I need a lot of movement.
00:13:09Don't be standing in front of him.
00:13:11You've got to move.
00:13:11I've got to hear him.
00:13:15So here is pretty boy Floyd with his wink.
00:13:23But then a little bit later,
00:13:25we saw his blink
00:13:27as he was caught with a quick lead right hand.
00:13:32Stop. Stop. Stop.
00:13:34Stop. Stop.
00:13:38Fox.
00:13:39It looked like the people in Hernandez's corner
00:13:41were too late getting out of the ring,
00:13:42but referee Rable
00:13:46gave the fighter time
00:13:49in his corner to adjust.
00:13:51Maywell's had better watch the right hand of Hernandez
00:13:54because he's got a good one.
00:13:56It's not anything that you can just put your finger on,
00:13:58but he throws it in there pretty accurate.
00:14:02Now Floyd combating the Hernandez right
00:14:04with combinations of his own,
00:14:06and Hernandez trying to walk right through
00:14:08the firestorm to get to Floyd.
00:14:13Break. Stop. Stop.
00:14:14You've got to get the head up.
00:14:16Quit pushing down on here, Floyd.
00:14:17You've got better hands. Do the job.
00:14:18You've got better hands. Do the job.
00:14:18You've got better hands. Do the job.
00:14:19Good job.
00:14:19Fox.
00:14:25Workout.
00:14:29Hernandez just wants to be inside,
00:14:31doesn't want to let Mayweather use
00:14:33those lightning reflexes from outside.
00:14:37And so far, he's been pretty effective at it.
00:14:40It's a hard thing to tell yourself
00:14:44you're fighting a guy who cannot fight that good well.
00:14:46Then the bell rings and find out he's a little tougher.
00:14:49It's hard to adjust.
00:14:52And that's what has happened to Mayweather.
00:14:54Now this guy's hitting him with some sneaky right hands,
00:14:58calling him some movement problems
00:14:59because he gets low.
00:15:01And he takes a good shot, Hernandez does.
00:15:08It was the left hook of Mayweather
00:15:23that ultimately did the destructive damage
00:15:25against Corrales.
00:15:28And you see him trying to make a left hook
00:15:30the factor here early.
00:15:34Stop. Stop.
00:15:37Fox.
00:15:37Body shots by Mayweather.
00:15:43Fighting fire with fire.
00:15:54Oh, no.
00:15:55Don't throw it in.
00:15:59Mayweather's very comfortable
00:16:00once he sits alongside you
00:16:03and starts watching and timing your punches
00:16:05as he's doing now gets pretty comfortable.
00:16:07You got to start throwing a lot of shots
00:16:09to make him uncomfortable.
00:16:10Mayweather landing a solid fuselade of rights and left.
00:16:14There's some swelling on Hernandez's face already
00:16:17from the accuracy of Mayweather's shots.
00:16:19Big swelling above the nose of Carlos Hernandez.
00:16:25Come in July, HBO Sports presents the next installment
00:16:31in our Sports of the 20th Century series,
00:16:35Shot Heard Round the World.
00:16:37We'll look back at Bobby Thompson's 1951 home runoff,
00:16:50Ralph Branca, which won the pennant for the New York Giants.
00:16:5350 years later, we find the Giants stole Dodgers pitching signs.
00:16:57Does that taint?
00:16:58One of the most memorable moments in sports history,
00:17:01a little miracle of Kukin's Bluff.
00:17:03You decide, Shot Heard Round the World,
00:17:05coming July 11th, only on HBO.
00:17:11Veronica Hernandez, wife of challenger Carlos Hernandez,
00:17:17practicing psychologist,
00:17:20says that she and Carlos like to sit together
00:17:23and try to visualize what's going to happen in the fight,
00:17:26visualize his responses.
00:17:27She didn't think you were coming home looking like a pretty boy, George.
00:17:43I didn't come home looking pretty.
00:17:57The head moving by Hernandez has really given Mayweather some problems.
00:18:16When he goes down and move his head,
00:18:18Mayweather seems to stand and just watch.
00:18:21But when Floyd can get a little distance
00:18:24and begin to straighten out his jab
00:18:26and follow it up with punches from both sides,
00:18:29he is accurate and effective.
00:18:31He landed 30 out of 50 punches by copy box numbers in round two
00:18:35and has been accurate again with the left hook here.
00:18:44Hometown crowd wants to see some fireworks
00:18:46from Pretty Boy Floyd.
00:18:48And a straight right hand
00:18:52seemed to momentarily stun Hernandez.
00:18:58Floyd Mayweather's intentions are plain.
00:19:02He wants a knockout.
00:19:05He's trying for it very hard right here.
00:19:08Two low blows in a row.
00:19:09Referee Dale Grable just watched them.
00:19:12And there's a hard right hand by Mayweather.
00:19:15Mayweather's trying to throw body shots,
00:19:18jab to the bodies to make Hernandez lower his hand,
00:19:22start protecting his body.
00:19:24That's what he's looking for.
00:19:28Another right hand from distance wobbles Hernandez.
00:19:32Floyd goes right back to the body
00:19:34once he finishes flooring.
00:19:35Make your man hand go low.
00:19:40Incidentally, Hernandez was introduced from El Salvador
00:19:43and he proudly represents the people of El Salvador.
00:19:46That's his heritage, but he's lived his whole life in California.
00:19:51Lives in Bellflower, California now.
00:19:53The home of the Fighting Clarice.
00:19:58He also went to a junior college for a while.
00:20:02Cerrito's junior college where he ran on the track team.
00:20:07Big left hook by Mayweather.
00:20:09Freezes Hernandez and he follows it with three more left hooks.
00:20:13Mayweather's paying a hard price for this slugging
00:20:21trying to catch this short of guy.
00:20:23Watch this hit.
00:20:23A lot of hit, button.
00:20:25His blood, I believe, is coming from somewhere.
00:20:28Frank, stop punching. Stop punching.
00:20:29Mayweather's bleeding some.
00:20:33It's from Mayweather's nose, I believe.
00:20:35I think you're right.
00:20:36Stop. Stop. Stop.
00:20:37Stop.
00:20:40That is going.
00:20:41That is going to be the same thing that you hang out for five now.
00:20:47Check out the massive welt, though,
00:20:49over the eye and nose of Carlos Hernandez
00:20:52when we go to that corner with interpreter Ray Torres.
00:20:57Don't worry about hitting the head.
00:20:58Keep hitting the body.
00:20:59And move your head a little bit more inside, okay?
00:21:03Relax.
00:21:05Okay, you hit him on the side.
00:21:08Okay.
00:21:09Now, when you have him, move him to the side and hit him.
00:21:11Work your way in, work your way out.
00:21:16When he gets near, you hit him.
00:21:18Relax.
00:21:19Here is that rapier left hand of Mayweather.
00:21:28Hernandez said,
00:21:29he's a cat.
00:21:31I've got to be a dog.
00:21:34He's quick.
00:21:36I've got to be tough.
00:21:39Get the bucket, Chuck.
00:21:41Harold, how do you score at 3-3?
00:21:42Okay, Jim.
00:21:433-0 in 30-27.
00:21:45Floyd Mayweather.
00:21:47Based on clean punching and, you know,
00:21:48fighting on the inside,
00:21:50landing the cleaner, harder shots.
00:21:51Not a lot of combinations,
00:21:52but still at all,
00:21:53landing the cleaner punches.
00:21:55Jim, you know,
00:21:56you may see that they're wearing
00:21:57two different kinds of boxing gloves.
00:21:58Floyd wanted those white brand gloves
00:22:00to match his outfit.
00:22:02Hernandez wanted Reyes.
00:22:04Nobody objected.
00:22:05They're wearing two different brands of boxing gloves,
00:22:07two different colors.
00:22:10So it's Hernandez.
00:22:11So far, this fight has gone good for Hernandez.
00:22:13He's not winning the round,
00:22:15but the fight is the kind of fight
00:22:16he would like to be in.
00:22:19Because they've been fighting in close quarters.
00:22:21That's right.
00:22:22And Harold mentioned the two different gloves.
00:22:30Reyes on Hernandez,
00:22:32Grant on Mayweather.
00:22:33That means it's Hernandez
00:22:34who's wearing the so-called punchless gloves, George.
00:22:38But
00:22:39the grants provide good blocking.
00:22:46Put them beside your face,
00:22:48and it offers a little cushion
00:22:49for when the guys hit you.
00:22:50Mayweather has decided
00:22:53that he's going to have to box.
00:22:54He should have thought about that
00:22:56before the bell rung, though.
00:23:02Now Mayweather switches to southpaw for a moment.
00:23:05Misses a right hook.
00:23:07Mayweather landed 62% of his punches
00:23:09by copy box numbers in round three.
00:23:11This will not be as accurate a round.
00:23:18You don't want a guy
00:23:19watching you bleed,
00:23:22and you're trying to discourage him.
00:23:23No siree,
00:23:24he's not going to get discouraged.
00:23:26Rick!
00:23:27You see the blood,
00:23:28and you start coming on and on and on.
00:23:31I think that whole trickle of blood
00:23:33is coming from the nostrils
00:23:34of Mayweather, George?
00:23:35Some.
00:23:37But the point of it is,
00:23:38it's giving his opponent
00:23:39a name of more and more confidence.
00:23:41I think Dale Grable's ever going to warn Floyd
00:23:45for any of those low blows.
00:23:55Mayweather backs into a corner,
00:23:57and Hernandez wants to take advantage.
00:23:59Floyd slips away.
00:24:01That's the kind of fight that Floyd likes,
00:24:03moving and making the guy miss you a little bit,
00:24:06and then making him pay for it.
00:24:07What's that hand in there?
00:24:08Watch out.
00:24:13Good counter left took by Mayweather
00:24:16as Hernandez was ducking inside.
00:24:26Mayweather wants the fight to come to him.
00:24:30You don't want to reach out if you're Mayweather
00:24:32because this guy is shorter,
00:24:34and he knows what to do with his height.
00:24:38You're doing well.
00:24:48You're being brave.
00:24:50When you grab him,
00:24:52you just move him around.
00:24:53Turn him around a bit.
00:24:54Spin him.
00:24:54Deep inhale.
00:24:56You're going to put grease on him.
00:24:59You're going to put grease on him.
00:25:04We'll be on his back.
00:25:06Floyd.
00:25:08Yes, sir.
00:25:09Don't put so much water on his motherfucking shirt.
00:25:11Look at that one.
00:25:12Listen.
00:25:13Floyd.
00:25:15Box him again.
00:25:16Make two rounds.
00:25:17We're going to start back on some war on his ass again, okay?
00:25:19Okay.
00:25:20All right, let's go.
00:25:21Wipe his nose.
00:25:22The Mayweather clan is large and prominent
00:25:24here in Grand Rapids.
00:25:25This is Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s grandmother
00:25:28with whom he grew up.
00:25:34Once in the ring, she fainted.
00:25:38That's true.
00:25:38She fainted after Floyd's huge victory
00:25:40over Genaro Hernandez.
00:25:43This is the kind of fight that Mayweather want to be in.
00:25:46Make the guy reach at you, miss,
00:25:48then you punch him.
00:25:49Don't give him anything.
00:25:51Power punches in round four by CompuBox Numbers.
00:25:56Mayweather landed only 8 of 19.
00:25:58Hernandez, 16 of 46.
00:26:00Floyd was using the jab more in that round.
00:26:02There's a hard right hand by Hernandez,
00:26:04countering Floyd's jab.
00:26:06Mayweather in the southpaw stance once again.
00:26:22I would say it's the second time he switched southpaw,
00:26:25although, of course, once when I said that
00:26:27during his fight with Goya Vargas,
00:26:29Floyd looked down and said,
00:26:30no, no, Jim, it was the third time.
00:26:34So among his many talents,
00:26:36he's capable at times of narrating his own fights.
00:26:39I think Mayweather will settle down now,
00:26:41thinking someone sent him out to get a quick knockout
00:26:43and fooled him that his power is when a guy's running into it.
00:26:47Well said, George.
00:26:48He knows.
00:26:48Well, he's decided, okay, I'm the boxer.
00:26:50Let me box this guy.
00:26:52Whether I'm at home or not, box, box, box.
00:26:55Back to the southpaw stance momentarily for Mayweather.
00:27:01Now back to his conventional stance.
00:27:05I think you're absolutely right, George.
00:27:07He seems now to have gotten out of that quick knockout mentality
00:27:10and into something that more resembles his natural game.
00:27:15Sometimes when you're at home,
00:27:16you want to do some strange things,
00:27:18but stick to who you are,
00:27:20and the fights always fall right in front of you.
00:27:23Amilcar Bruza,
00:27:39the man who trained Carlos Manzón
00:27:41in his historic reign as middleweight champion,
00:27:4514 consecutive successful title defenses.
00:27:49Bruza recently moved to Los Angeles from South America
00:27:52hooked up with Hernandez
00:27:54and may be instrumental in helping Hernandez
00:27:57to a formula, a plan
00:28:01that is making him competitive
00:28:02against Floyd Mayweather here.
00:28:08Hernandez is making himself like a ball.
00:28:11He just balls up.
00:28:13Doesn't give you much to hit,
00:28:14much to hit, and then moves his head.
00:28:16Mayweather gets a little...
00:28:18confused...
00:28:20confused...
00:28:21because the guy's hitting him.
00:28:24He doesn't like that,
00:28:25and he can't do anything about it.
00:28:26And as a former college distance runner,
00:28:28we can expect Hernandez to have the stamina to keep it up.
00:28:31to his head.
00:28:32to his head.
00:28:33to his head.
00:28:42Crowd settles in for what looks like
00:28:44a conventional boxing match
00:28:47for the next few rounds.
00:28:55He doesn't want to fight!
00:28:57Brusa is the gentleman whose left shoulder and head
00:29:02dominate the right side of your screen.
00:29:10Speaking Spanish.
00:29:12Are you listening to me?
00:29:16You got to practice his exit.
00:29:18He doesn't want to stay there because he doesn't want to train with you.
00:29:21That's why he moves.
00:29:24Bring him.
00:29:29Bring him.
00:29:31Bring him.
00:29:36Bring him.
00:29:42Do it.
00:29:45And it's finding it a little bit more difficult to get into
00:29:47Mayweather's body now that he's boxing.
00:29:52Mayweather used his feet to land 26 of 45 punches
00:29:56against 9 of 49 for Hernandez.
00:29:58Hernandez would like to be in position
00:30:00to throw more than 40 or 50 punches.
00:30:02He wants to keep pressure on Floyd Mayweather.
00:30:06Break! Stop punching! Stop punching!
00:30:13And Floyd Mayweather beginning to shake his right hand
00:30:16as though it's bothering him.
00:30:19Now, he had hand injuries in his bout with Corrales
00:30:24back in January,
00:30:25and actually saw Dr. Quinn, Larry, earlier this week, right?
00:30:28Yeah, on Monday, he went to see a doctor about his hand,
00:30:31which suggests that he has either an injury
00:30:36or he's getting over an injury.
00:30:38He doesn't have big, powerful hands, strong hands.
00:30:43Punching him. Maybe that will keep him
00:30:45from being the kind of puncher
00:30:47that he envisions himself to be
00:30:49and have to box and let the knockouts happen,
00:30:51as George says.
00:30:52And George is the one who pointed out to me
00:30:54that Floyd was shaking his right hand.
00:30:56It's a pretty sure sign, isn't it, George?
00:30:58Yeah, it hurts.
00:30:59Sometimes hurts more than...
00:31:09And with the right hand perhaps hurting,
00:31:11Mayweather went to the left hook twice,
00:31:13came with the right to the body.
00:31:15His head's in there.
00:31:17While he's in that motion,
00:31:19he switches his body to a southpaw
00:31:21and throws this guy off.
00:31:23George, if the right hand is hurting him,
00:31:31does it hurt more to land a head shot than a body shot?
00:31:34Yeah, I think the body shots are more dangerous
00:31:36because you're just gonna hit the end of the elbows and box.
00:31:41You just can't get a real tight fist
00:31:43when you go down to the body, so...
00:31:45If you notice, his right hand is open
00:31:48while his left hand is balled into a fist.
00:31:50Exactly right.
00:31:51He is not balling the right hand,
00:31:53or at least wasn't a moment ago.
00:31:57Shots are...
00:32:06Meanwhile, Hernandez is just digging away,
00:32:11trying to stay chest-to-chest with Mayweather.
00:32:14Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop!
00:32:16Gets a chance to hit Floyd
00:32:18after the referee said stop.
00:32:19Three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
00:32:24and he motioned Jim about his hand.
00:32:26Box!
00:32:31So there's a turn of events
00:32:33and the potential scoring of the fight
00:32:35as suddenly Floyd Mayweather is knocked down,
00:32:39and that, of course, will be a point
00:32:41to the advantage of Hernandez.
00:32:43And he's witzing as he goes back to his corner.
00:32:47Keep the jab working.
00:32:48You're gonna play around anyway.
00:32:50Get off the hands for a minute.
00:32:53She's hurt bad.
00:32:55I can't quit.
00:32:56I know you ain't gonna quit.
00:32:57You ain't worried about that.
00:33:00But I want you.
00:33:02If you're about to use the jab, keep fainting.
00:33:05Listen, draw him into the right uppercut, all right?
00:33:09Part of the jab out there.
00:33:10Let him come through you
00:33:11and shoot the right uppercut in the middle, all right?
00:33:13No problem.
00:33:14Keep banging him to the bottom.
00:33:16Keep banging him to the bottom.
00:33:17Keep banging him to the bottom.
00:33:18Shoot the right uppercut in the middle.
00:33:19Short left to the head.
00:33:24A delayed reaction.
00:33:27I'm just curious if he went down more because his hand hurt him
00:33:33than because he was hit.
00:33:34It wasn't because he hit.
00:33:35It wasn't because of the punch.
00:33:36It wasn't because of the punch.
00:33:37Yeah.
00:33:38And it was called a knockdown because he put his left glove
00:33:40on the canvas.
00:33:40Yeah.
00:33:41He wasn't hit.
00:33:43Harold, how do you have it scored through six now?
00:33:45Okay, Jim, 58-55, five rounds to one.
00:33:49Pretty boy Floyd Mayweather certainly thought he won
00:33:52the first five rounds with the cleaner punching,
00:33:54but then in round six, like you said,
00:33:5610-8 for Carlos Hernandez.
00:33:57So that knockdown sort of puts him back in the fight.
00:34:00At least it puts him within range that he can catch up.
00:34:07More of a fall down than a knockdown,
00:34:09but Hernandez gets the benefit anyway.
00:34:12Mayweather switching to a southpaw stance again,
00:34:15perhaps trying to protect that right hand.
00:34:17He'll throw power punches with the left hand
00:34:19out of this stance.
00:34:21Sometimes you hurt your hand,
00:34:22and then you wait a while, wait a while.
00:34:24It'll come back, and then you just wait a while.
00:34:26Use the opposite hand until it comes back.
00:34:30You think you're gonna die when you hurt it,
00:34:31but you're not gonna die.
00:34:35We've seen plenty of instances where a good fighter
00:34:37was able to win with one hand
00:34:40after a situation like this.
00:34:42Close that hand.
00:34:43Don't twist his arm when it comes in.
00:34:45Fox.
00:34:48Floyd's still using the right hand
00:34:50and using it there for a power shot.
00:34:52Now, this one was definitely a slip.
00:35:06You okay?
00:35:07And you see how wet the corner is.
00:35:10Floyd's spreading his feet.
00:35:12Floyd Mayweather Jr. seems a little bit discombobulated here.
00:35:16He's a little confused, a little emotional.
00:35:22Something's going on.
00:35:23I can't put my finger on it, but he's just uncomfortable.
00:35:29He's just goin' to make it work, work, work!
00:35:31Work, work!
00:35:31Look all of them.
00:35:36Look the body, baby!
00:35:37Look the body!
00:35:38Look the body!
00:35:39Look the body!
00:35:40You just gotta make up your mind
00:35:41during training camp that you're gonna be in a tough fight.
00:35:44You can't do it in a ring once the bell rings.
00:35:46If you underestimated a guy, you're gonna have the fight of your life.
00:35:50Are you listening, Lennox Lewis?
00:35:56If you don't take an opponent seriously,
00:35:58you turn him into a serious opponent.
00:36:01And you just can't rise to the occasion on fight night.
00:36:06Just doesn't happen like that.
00:36:08Once again, in close quarters, Mayweather wincing,
00:36:12almost like he's biting down on his mouthpiece
00:36:15because he's hurt.
00:36:16But then throwing with the right hand
00:36:19and switching back into the southpaw stance,
00:36:23jabbing and parrying with the right hand.
00:36:26Hernandez is doing a good job of just tapping here,
00:36:28tapping there to confuse Mayweather.
00:36:31He's not trying to land a big shot.
00:36:32Just keep your hand on him and be rough.
00:36:35On the subject of this world's best athlete thing,
00:36:39Mayweather said, hey, Allen Iverson can have an off game.
00:36:42Tiger Woods can lose a tournament,
00:36:43but a boxer can't have an off night.
00:36:47Just par with your left hand.
00:36:47All right, all right, all right.
00:36:48When you put your hand out, don't do it this way.
00:36:51I'm sorry, sir.
00:36:53Just par with your...
00:36:55Par with your left hand.
00:36:58Bring him into your upper cup.
00:37:00You're kidding me with the upper cup,
00:37:01you got to bring him into it.
00:37:02All right?
00:37:04You lay inside.
00:37:05My hand is killing me.
00:37:07I feel good, though.
00:37:08I'm not...
00:37:09When he turns to the left, hit him with your right hand.
00:37:18You got to throw with that right hand when he turns southpaw.
00:37:22All right, all right.
00:37:22All right, all right.
00:37:22There you go.
00:37:24Don't blow your nose, you know what I have to do?
00:37:26You heard Floyd Mayweather Jr. saying,
00:37:30my right hand is killing me.
00:37:33You see him wincing inside.
00:37:35He's just got to try to pull this out on pure class.
00:37:44There you go, Floyd.
00:37:45So an unusual challenge presents itself
00:37:47to one of the brightest young stars in the sport of boxing,
00:37:52the brilliant Floyd Mayweather Jr.,
00:37:54now clearly fighting with a damaged right hand
00:37:57and trying to hold on
00:37:59against an on-rushing Carlos Hernandez,
00:38:01who is giving him no quarter.
00:38:03You think your hand's killing you,
00:38:10but it's not going to kill you.
00:38:11You just got to keep throwing it,
00:38:12as you just saw him do.
00:38:14Solid connect to the body with the right hand.
00:38:17Don't give up on your own hand.
00:38:20Break!
00:38:20Stop punching.
00:38:21Let's go, baby.
00:38:23Let's go, baby.
00:38:24Let's go, baby.
00:38:25Power, power.
00:38:26Wow.
00:38:26Fight it back.
00:38:27Fight it back.
00:38:28Fight it back.
00:38:31Fight it back, baby.
00:38:33Mayweather's corner told him
00:38:35that just to power with your right hand,
00:38:36power with it.
00:38:37And he's doing a little power.
00:38:39Let's go.
00:38:39Let's go.
00:38:39Let's go.
00:38:39Let's go.
00:38:40Let's go.
00:38:40Let's go.
00:38:40Let's go.
00:38:41Constantly switching stances.
00:38:43Conventional.
00:38:43Southpaw.
00:38:44Conventional.
00:38:45Then Southpaw.
00:38:46When he's in the Southpaw stance,
00:38:49as he is now,
00:38:50the right hand becomes the lead hand.
00:38:52Let's go.
00:38:53Let's go.
00:38:53Let's go.
00:38:54Switches back to conventional.
00:38:58Come on.
00:38:59Looks as though Floyd's going to do this
00:39:00constantly and fluidly
00:39:02through the rest of the fight.
00:39:04He's in fine condition.
00:39:05That's the problem.
00:39:07Hernandez is coming on strong,
00:39:08but Mayweather's in such good shape.
00:39:10Quick, stop punching.
00:39:12Not the kind of entertainment
00:39:13Floyd wanted to provide
00:39:15to the hometown fans.
00:39:16Certainly it appeared
00:39:17in the early rounds
00:39:18that he was looking
00:39:19for a spectacular KO.
00:39:21Now, as George Foreman said
00:39:23at the beginning of the evening,
00:39:25just get the win.
00:39:26Get the win
00:39:27and make sure the promoter
00:39:28pays you the money.
00:39:31That's what a lot of fighters
00:39:32that didn't do.
00:39:34And look good the next time,
00:39:36right?
00:39:36Right, Larry?
00:39:37Well, win tonight
00:39:39will be sensational next time.
00:39:41And Magnus is just looking
00:39:46for one shot.
00:39:48One shot.
00:39:49And I think he's fooling himself.
00:39:51He should just get in there
00:39:51and land a lot of shots.
00:39:52There's that left to the body again.
00:40:05He's sizing him up
00:40:06for overhand left.
00:40:08Left hook.
00:40:08Left to the body
00:40:33out of the southpaw stance.
00:40:35Mayweather finds another option
00:40:37that works for him
00:40:38and scores to close the round.

00:41:20What's up, Tony?
00:41:25Let's go.
00:41:26Here we go.
00:41:27Keep running to the right.
00:41:30A lot of water.
00:41:33Keep running to the right.
00:41:34Up the corner.
00:41:35This fight looks like
00:41:37a jeweled watch
00:41:40against a Timex,
00:41:41but the Timex
00:41:43is hanging in there.
00:41:49Yeah, because the jeweled watch
00:41:51may have a broken spring.
00:41:52Stop, stop, stop.
00:41:55Keep your head in.
00:41:56Don't pull him.
00:41:56Don't pull him.
00:41:56Don't pull him.
00:41:58One too many, man.
00:41:59Come on.
00:41:59Give me a break.
00:42:02Hernandez's face
00:42:04misshapen from
00:42:05the early punishment
00:42:06Mayweather dealt.
00:42:10But no cuts.
00:42:11Just a swelling.
00:42:17Mayweather's doing this
00:42:18all with his legs,
00:42:20keeping his left foot
00:42:21and his right foot
00:42:22on the outside
00:42:23of his opponent.
00:42:24Never, only puts it
00:42:26between his legs
00:42:27when he's ready
00:42:27to throw a punch.
00:42:30And the crowd,
00:42:31many of whom paid
00:42:32$200 apiece
00:42:33for ringside seats,
00:42:35wondering why
00:42:36they're seeing
00:42:36a tactical display
00:42:38at this point.
00:42:40They will learn
00:42:41from the newspapers
00:42:41tomorrow
00:42:42or the news programs
00:42:43tonight
00:42:43about Floyd's right hand.
00:42:49Get in there.
00:42:53Punch it.
00:42:53Punch it.
00:42:59Good, quick leaps
00:43:04out of the southpaw stance.
00:43:05Mayweather fighting
00:43:07Mayweather fighting
00:43:07this entire round
00:43:09in the southpaw stance.
00:43:19George, why do you think
00:43:20he's going to fight
00:43:21the whole round
00:43:21as a southpaw?
00:43:22Is that to protect
00:43:23his right hand somehow?
00:43:23Well, he does a good job
00:43:25of paring better
00:43:26with his right hand.
00:43:28Seems like he's able
00:43:29to just lay that right
00:43:30right on in there
00:43:30as a substitute power punch.
00:43:32Uh-huh.
00:43:34And meanwhile,
00:43:35he can try to generate
00:43:36power off the back foot
00:43:37with the left hand.
00:43:38That's what he's doing.
00:43:39But you don't have
00:43:39to throw it with power.
00:43:40You can just kind of
00:43:41like a bowling ball,
00:43:42just roll it right on in
00:43:44and the guy runs into it.
00:43:46That's what he's doing
00:43:47with his left hand now.
00:43:48And now he is hearing
00:43:49from the hometown crowd
00:43:51something that surely
00:43:53he did not want to hear.
00:43:54Yeah, but let them boo.
00:43:56Absolutely.
00:43:56Let them boo.
00:43:58Get the win.
00:43:58This is not a Broadway play.
00:44:01This is boxing.
00:44:09Bob Dylan said
00:44:10everybody must get stoned.
00:44:14So he would not feel
00:44:15so alone.
00:44:17But everybody gets booed.
00:44:22Well, that's true, George,
00:44:23but nobody wants to come home
00:44:26and get booed.
00:44:26Let's go of the road.
00:44:28Brick, stock budget.
00:44:29All you remember,
00:44:29as a boxer there,
00:44:30you have no home.
00:44:36Stop, stop.
00:44:38Hey, happy 60th, Bob,
00:44:40if you're watching.
00:44:43Dylan turned 60 this past week.
00:44:45Hey, Bob Dylan.
00:44:46Hey.
00:44:48I gave him my wide tape
00:44:50that I have.
00:44:51Hey.
00:44:52Go get some tape.
00:44:52Let him, man, keep coming to you.
00:44:59He dropped the right hook on you.
00:45:00Right hook.
00:45:01Right hook.
00:45:02Right hook.
00:45:02Part him up to there.
00:45:03All right?
00:45:04You come in.
00:45:05You come in.
00:45:05He's there.
00:45:07All right?
00:45:08Oh, he hasn't taken it.
00:45:13When he puts his hand out there,
00:45:17hit him!
00:45:17You've got to hit him on the side.
00:45:21Hit him on the body.
00:45:23If you want to win this fight,
00:45:25you've got to throw punches
00:45:26and put pressure on him.
00:45:29Okay?
00:45:30Seize down, coach.
00:45:32Seize down, coach.
00:45:33Ten.
00:45:34Ten.
00:45:35Round 10 of a Schedule 12.
00:45:41Get that ice out.
00:45:48And referee Dale Grable
00:45:50wants a timeout now
00:45:52to remove ice
00:45:53and water
00:45:54from the corner
00:45:55of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:45:57Harold, how do you have it?
00:45:58Three-nine.
00:45:58Okay, Jim.
00:45:5987-83,
00:46:00seven rounds to two.
00:46:02Floyd Mayweather.
00:46:03Jim, it's very interesting.
00:46:04Floyd wins the first five.
00:46:06Hurts his hand in round six.
00:46:08Carlos Hernandez
00:46:08lands some punches
00:46:09in round seven.
00:46:10Roger Mayweather.
00:46:10Floyd absolutely stopped
00:46:12in the eighth and ninth.
00:46:13I mean, uh,
00:46:13Hernandez stopped
00:46:14in the eighth and ninth.
00:46:17Rick, stop it.
00:46:18All right, now,
00:46:19Larry Merchant
00:46:19has gone to Floyd Mayweather's corner
00:46:21to have a conversation
00:46:22with trainer Roger Mayweather
00:46:25about the broken
00:46:26or perhaps damaged right hand
00:46:28that Floyd is fighting with.
00:46:29Larry, take it away.
00:46:31All right, Roger,
00:46:32does Floyd have
00:46:34a broken hand?
00:46:35I don't know if it's broken,
00:46:36but he said it's hurt.
00:46:37He had hurt in camp,
00:46:38so I already knew
00:46:39that he wasn't going to be
00:46:40using his right hand that much.
00:46:43But like I'm telling him,
00:46:44I say he needs to stay inside
00:46:46and run the guy
00:46:46with short punches
00:46:47right up the cup,
00:46:49right hook,
00:46:50because the guy's second foot,
00:46:51because the guy's
00:46:51in the middle of a bullet
00:46:52his way in.
00:46:54Because he hurt his hand,
00:46:55is that why you were hoping
00:46:57that he could get
00:46:58through this fight quickly?
00:46:59No, I don't look forward
00:47:01to get through the fight
00:47:02so quickly.
00:47:02What I'm looking for
00:47:03is for Floyd to really,
00:47:05Floyd can lay inside
00:47:06with the guy,
00:47:07use the defense
00:47:08and counter off
00:47:08what the guy's doing.
00:47:10All the guy's doing
00:47:11is being aggressive.
00:47:12It ain't that he's throwing
00:47:13a tremendous amount
00:47:14of punches.
00:47:15It's that Floyd
00:47:15has to trick him.
00:47:16We have to use
00:47:16the skill to trick him.
00:47:17Run him in the right
00:47:18upper cup,
00:47:19shoot him right hook,
00:47:20left hook,
00:47:20and that way you gotta
00:47:21trick the guy out,
00:47:22because he's kind of
00:47:23busted up.
00:47:23All right, so you said
00:47:24he came to the fight
00:47:25with a hand
00:47:26that wasn't 100%,
00:47:27and somewhere
00:47:29in the middle of the fight
00:47:31he hurt it even more.
00:47:32Right, he hurt it.
00:47:33He said he hurt it
00:47:34on the guy's head
00:47:35I think about the
00:47:35fourth round,
00:47:36but I think Floyd
00:47:37still going to get him
00:47:38out of that.
00:47:39See what he's doing
00:47:40right now?
00:47:40I think he's still
00:47:41going to get him
00:47:41out of that.
00:47:42That's what I told him
00:47:43to do.
00:47:43Thank you, Roger.
00:47:51So George,
00:47:51Roger Mayweather
00:47:52wants Floyd to stand
00:47:54inside with Hernandez
00:47:55and play off of Hernandez
00:47:57limited offense
00:47:58with counter shots
00:47:59of his own, right?
00:48:00Maybe it's a good idea,
00:48:02maybe not.
00:48:02See, he doesn't understand
00:48:03that Mayweather
00:48:04is not the short guy
00:48:06this time.
00:48:06He is getting taken
00:48:08advantage of,
00:48:08because the other guy
00:48:09is smaller,
00:48:10he gets lower,
00:48:11and he's able to land
00:48:12shots when they're close.
00:48:17Well, you heard Roger
00:48:18say that the right
00:48:19uppercut would do damage,
00:48:20and Floyd's doing some
00:48:21damage with the right
00:48:22uppercut.
00:48:23Although now Hernandez
00:48:24begins to accelerate
00:48:26his punch output,
00:48:27and lands a good shot
00:48:29inside, and Floyd lands
00:48:30one right back at him,
00:48:32and now they wrestle.
00:48:36Pull behind the head
00:48:37one more time,
00:48:38and he'll get you.
00:48:38Don't punish.
00:48:39Stay there.
00:48:40Stay there.
00:48:42The inside of the gloves,
00:48:43don't push them.
00:48:44That's the grumpiest
00:48:46referee I've seen
00:48:46in a long time.
00:48:47What's up?
00:48:52What's up?
00:48:56Don't,
00:48:56don't try you,
00:49:00you're hard enough
00:49:00to get it here.
00:49:01I want you to do
00:49:02what you just did.
00:49:03Shoot right up a cup,
00:49:04and right hook.
00:49:06All right?
00:49:06You hurt me with that?
00:49:10All right.
00:49:11Listen.
00:49:12Stay there.
00:49:14Keep running, man.
00:49:15Yeah, you're running.
00:49:16You're running.
00:49:16You're running.
00:49:17You're running.
00:49:18You're running.
00:49:18Okay.
00:49:19Let's get some water
00:49:21on his face.
00:49:25Let's put some tape
00:49:34up on the gloves.
00:49:40You got to put more
00:49:41pressure on him.
00:49:43Sometimes Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:49:46has been grimacing
00:49:48without getting hit.
00:49:51He is in pain.
00:49:54And that welt
00:49:56between the eyes
00:49:57of Hernandez
00:49:58is grotesque.
00:50:00It's swollen
00:50:01to such an extent now
00:50:02it's like a
00:50:03like a third eye
00:50:05or an extra nose
00:50:06such a big
00:50:07promontory on his face.
00:50:08George, does that
00:50:09bother the fighter
00:50:09or does he not
00:50:10even feel it?
00:50:11Well, you don't
00:50:11really feel it
00:50:12as much as knowing
00:50:13that, you know,
00:50:14something's wrong
00:50:15with your head.
00:50:16You don't really
00:50:16pay much attention.
00:50:17You got to protect
00:50:18yourself.
00:50:22Doesn't seem
00:50:23to be affecting
00:50:23Hernandez's vision.
00:50:25A lot of it is
00:50:26we see it more
00:50:28than the fighter
00:50:28feels it.
00:50:30That's what I figured.
00:50:30Hernandez lands
00:50:35a right hand
00:50:36as he jumps
00:50:36in again.
00:50:40Referee Dale Grable
00:50:41also intrigued
00:50:43by the welt
00:50:44on Hernandez's face
00:50:47and now he wants
00:50:48a doctor to look
00:50:49at it.
00:50:54See a nose?
00:50:55Yeah, it's not broken.
00:51:00It's just a new deal.
00:51:01What is this about?
00:51:02What is this about?
00:51:03What is this about?
00:51:03It's with the hands.
00:51:04Okay.
00:51:05I'm pleasant
00:51:07by that one, George.
00:51:09Some of it was broken.
00:51:11So what?
00:51:11Has this referee
00:51:12never seen
00:51:12a broken nose before?
00:51:14I guess he was worried
00:51:21about breathing capacity
00:51:23but the doctor says
00:51:24the nose isn't broken.
00:51:25It's fine.
00:51:34Carlos Hernandez
00:51:35won't win this fight
00:51:37but he'll get
00:51:38some personal satisfaction
00:51:40of making
00:51:41Floyd Mayweather
00:51:43run from him
00:51:45at times
00:51:47and just
00:51:49staying there
00:51:50with him.
00:51:53about scoring
00:52:03a knockdown
00:52:04without having
00:52:04landed a punch,
00:52:05you know?
00:52:06Years from now
00:52:07he'll tell his grandchildren
00:52:07yeah, Floyd Floyd
00:52:09with a beautiful right hand
00:52:10that was a perfect shot.
00:52:12Mayweather just
00:52:13can't seem to zero in
00:52:14with that right hand
00:52:15to the head.
00:52:16He wants a clean shot
00:52:17and he just can't
00:52:18seem to see it.
00:52:19looks so good about beating
00:52:21the man
00:52:25up here
00:52:25yorumis moments
00:52:34for the handlers
00:52:35Nervous moments for the handlers and followers of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:52:43Brilliant talent, having to scuffle his way through what is becoming an ugly fight.
00:52:49Clearly fighting with a damaged right hand, probably broken.
00:52:54Having to wrestle Carlos Hernandez from moment to moment, bump him off.
00:52:58Worried about head bumps is tough.
00:53:01Earlier, we were speculating on how Chavez could deal with Mayweather.
00:53:11There's a slippery corner there.
00:53:13He could tear a hamstring or hurt a knee so easily slipping that way.
00:53:17That's the second time that's happened.
00:53:20Now you have to speculate that it's a good thing for Mayweather he wasn't in there with Chavez tonight.
00:53:25This is the last round, you hear me?
00:53:32We've got to come up with everything.
00:53:34Don't hold anything back.
00:53:35I want you to close the show out, all right?
00:53:45You're in there, I want you to close the show out, okay?
00:53:50You hear me?
00:53:51You got to keep going with that pressure, and when you get in, you just got to keep punching.
00:53:58You got to keep going, you got to keep going, you got to keep going, you got to keep going.
00:54:05Okay?
00:54:06I want you to get him out of there.
00:54:08That's it.
00:54:09That's it.
00:54:10That's it.
00:54:11Okay, baby.
00:54:12By CompuBox estimate, Floyd Mayweather threw only 40 punches in the 11th round, landing 10.
00:54:18Carlos Hernandez, 19 out of 67, depending on the predisposition of the scorers who are judging the fight.
00:54:25That was a round that could have been given to Hernandez.
00:54:28Harold, how do you have it scored so far?
00:54:31And is this a tough enough fight to score that Floyd's people should be nervous about it?
00:54:34No, Jim, not at all.
00:54:35Well, I think that Floyd Mayweather was easily outboxing him.
00:54:39Now that's the two, 107-101, Floyd Mayweather drew the gym.
00:54:43Carlos Hernandez gets inside, there's a landing of punches.
00:54:46I mean, his punches are wide, but being blocked.
00:54:48They're on the arms.
00:54:50Floyd Mayweather still landing the cleanest shots with one hand.
00:54:53I mean, in truth, he is punching with two hands, but no one of them's hurt.
00:54:57Landing the cleanest shots.
00:55:01All right, so Harold Lederman sees Floyd as being comfortably clear
00:55:05of Hernandez.
00:55:17Break, break, break, break, break, break, break, break.
00:55:20Rough housing stuff.
00:55:27And an elbowing penalty, deduction of a point against Hernandez.
00:55:32He doesn't lose the point.
00:55:33Blacks.
00:55:35So Mayweather gets back the point he lost when he went down earlier in the fight
00:55:47and provided Hernandez with a knock-down point.
00:55:51That referee is not a good referee at all.
00:55:53He seemed to be pushing Mayweather around, talking in his ear during a boxing match.
00:55:58I don't know where they got that guy, but let's just send him back.
00:56:03Stop, stop, stop.
00:56:07His name is Dale Grable.
00:56:10George, he speaks very highly of you.
00:56:11Just cut it off.
00:56:12Well, I'm not going to speak highly of him on the referee job he's doing tonight.
00:56:15And you heard Michael Buffer say that he'd been a referee in what?
00:56:1837 to 38 World Championship fights.
00:56:20I think he said this is his 27th.
00:56:22Something like that.
00:56:24Mayweather must have swore at his mom or something.
00:56:28Something's gone wrong.
00:56:33I like the word you used earlier.
00:56:35Grumpy.
00:56:36He is grumpy.
00:56:37Yeah, but you can't be grumpy and then making arrows the way he's doing tonight
00:56:41when a championship is on the line.
00:56:47Well, pretty boy hasn't looked very pretty tonight.
00:56:54But certainly good enough for a successful defense of his title.
00:56:59Maybe not pretty, but gutty, resourceful, determined.
00:57:03He's shown a lot of championship qualities in there tonight.
00:57:06Sometimes a champion's going to have to go through this
00:57:08and find a way to get through it.
00:57:11And he has.
00:57:12When he's fighting, he has all the advantage.
00:57:14The height, the weight, the reach.
00:57:17He's not a good fighter when these things happen before.
00:57:20He has to be on the opposite end of it.
00:57:24You made that point at the beginning of the fight,
00:57:26and it certainly has panned out, George.
00:57:29In hindsight, Corrales was just too easy to hit.
00:57:33In his stand-up, walk-forward style,
00:57:36while Hernandez is just roughing him up,
00:57:41getting inside, making it ugly,
00:57:44but hanging in there.
00:57:47The equivalent would be a pitcher who has blisters
00:57:50and therefore can't throw his good curve or fastball,
00:57:53but somehow finds a way to get the batters out.
00:57:56Floyd Mayweather continued to get the batters out.
00:57:59Look at the batters out.
00:58:01Look at the batters out.
00:58:06Shoot.
00:58:19Underfeated.
00:58:22Prophetic words from George Foreman
00:58:23at the very beginning of the evening when he said,
00:58:26Just get the win, worry about the glory some other time.
00:58:32Tonight, Floyd Mayweather was not in a position to care about glory.
00:58:37He had to just get the win.
00:58:39What's so confusing about this, Jim and George,
00:58:42is if they knew that he had a damaged hand going in,
00:58:48why would he go out there and try to end the fight throwing punches
00:58:53when you're bound to land your hands on the other guy's head, elbows from time to time.
00:58:58When I speak to him, we'll have to see what he says.
00:59:02If he wins.
00:59:07George, he's in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
00:59:10It's his hometown.
00:59:11He's the undefeated champion.
00:59:14Not too many ifs here.
00:59:17And you saw Mayweather grimacing as the gloves were removed,
00:59:24clearly in great pain.
00:59:25Let's quickly look back at the progression of the fight.
00:59:28In the early rounds, Floyd, trying to put on a show,
00:59:32began to reach a dazzling tempo around round three
00:59:35when he landed a series of power punches
00:59:38and clearly had Hernandez on the defensive.
00:59:40But by the sixth round, Floyd was exhibiting to those at ringside
00:59:45that he was bothered by a right-hand problem.
00:59:49And this was ruled a knockdown
00:59:51when Floyd put a glove on the canvas
00:59:53in obvious pain after hitting Hernandez.
00:59:56No punch took him to the canvas.
00:59:58But nevertheless, when the glove went down,
01:00:01it was called a knockdown and the referee counted.
01:00:04In the seventh round, Mayweather continued openly to grimace.
01:00:08He constantly switched his stance,
01:00:10southpaw, conventional, mostly southpaw,
01:00:13through the end of the fight,
01:00:14using the right hand,
01:00:16but using it mostly as a rangefinder
01:00:19and a pity-pat scorer
01:00:21rather than delivering punches with authority.
01:00:26I know he didn't look good in this fight.
01:00:33That's all I can say.
01:00:34He didn't.
01:00:35Can I tell you something, Larry?
01:00:47No, I don't know.
01:00:49And they're still counting up the scores here in Grand Rapids.
01:00:53You have a sense, George,
01:00:54that this might have been a hard fight for the judges to score?
01:00:56Yeah, pretty hard,
01:00:57because the other guy was aggressive
01:00:58and he saw the other guy screaming to the referee,
01:01:01something from hurting.
01:01:02You have to stop and think about these things.
01:01:05Let's go up to Michael Buffer
01:01:07and find out if Floyd Mayweather got the win.
01:01:10Ladies and gentlemen, we go to the scorecards.
01:01:12Peter Trimiteria scores the bout 119 to 110.
01:01:17Bob Watson has the bout 117 to 110.
01:01:21And Marty Salmon scores at 116 to 112.
01:01:25All three judges concur.
01:01:27The winner by unanimous decision
01:01:29and still the undefeated super coverweight champion of the world,
01:01:35pretty boy, Floyd Mayweather.
01:01:43Let's go, let's go, Michael Buffer.
01:01:47Wow, that matters.
01:01:47Michael Buffer.
01:01:49Keep him around, keep him around.
01:01:51Keep him around.
01:01:53Keep him around.
01:01:55A word of consolation for vanquished challenger Carlos Hernandez.
01:02:01The three judges falling right in line with Harold Letterman.
01:02:05So Harold wins the argument
01:02:07about whether it was an easy fight to score.
01:02:11Final CompuBox numbers,
01:02:13and you see Mayweather landed 69 more through 156.
01:02:17Fewer landed at a much higher connect percentage
01:02:20than did Hernandez.
01:02:23Jabs, and Mayweather jabbed with both the right hand and the left hand,
01:02:27mostly down the stretch with the right hand.
01:02:30Landing 63 out of 207.
01:02:32Hernandez, who landed very few jabs
01:02:35against previous championship-level opponent,
01:02:38Gennaro Chicanito Hernandez,
01:02:40landed only 7 of 58 here.
01:02:43And Larry Merchant stands by
01:02:45with the winner and still champion,
01:02:47Floyd Mayweather Jr.
01:02:48Thank you, Jim.
01:02:49Congratulations, Floyd.
01:02:52Rough night to get through.
01:02:53Oh, man, tonight was a rough night.
01:02:56Actually, I hurt my left hand,
01:02:59and later on in the fight, I hurt my right hand.
01:03:01So I had to try to win the best way I know how.
01:03:03All right.
01:03:03Move my legs, box, and move.
01:03:04He was tough, but I think if I had both of my hands,
01:03:06I could have eventually boxed down and got him out of here.
01:03:08All right. Let's go back to the dressing room.
01:03:10When you came into this fight,
01:03:12how badly were your hands hurting you?
01:03:15To be honest, Larry, you know,
01:03:17I came into the fight with two messed-up hands.
01:03:19But, you know, I had no excuse.
01:03:20I'd like to go out there and fight and put on a good show.
01:03:22But, you know, like I said, I want to thank God,
01:03:24you know, God for getting me through this.
01:03:25I want to thank God for bringing me where I'm at today.
01:03:28I want to thank Team Mayweather,
01:03:29and I want to thank Grant.
01:03:31When you were in the dressing room before the fight,
01:03:34I understand that they tried to give you some extra tape,
01:03:37but you refused it?
01:03:38Well, um, no, no,
01:03:41they didn't try to give me no extra tape.
01:03:42But I just wanted my hand rash put onto it
01:03:44where they feel comfortable.
01:03:46And so I thought, you know,
01:03:47if I had a lot of padding on top,
01:03:49a lot of tape on my wrist,
01:03:50that my hand, you know, I could get to it.
01:03:52Did you have to take a shot of Novocaine
01:03:54in either hand or both?
01:03:55Both.
01:03:56Both hands.
01:03:56Both hands.
01:03:57So when did you start feeling the pain?
01:04:00I started feeling the pain, like,
01:04:02when they called it a knockdown,
01:04:04that's when I hit him,
01:04:05and I really felt it bad in my left hand.
01:04:06All right, let's take a look at what happened there,
01:04:08because there was no punch actually landed.
01:04:10You just went down from the pain,
01:04:13and you needed a break?
01:04:15Yeah.
01:04:15Now watch here.
01:04:16There really wasn't a punch landed.
01:04:17You hit him on the head with your left hand,
01:04:20and that must have really felt bad.
01:04:23And eventually you went down just,
01:04:25it seemed, to get a break.
01:04:28And they called it a knockdown.
01:04:30Well, it's a part of boxing,
01:04:32but the main thing is I got through this tonight,
01:04:33and I just give thanks to God,
01:04:35you know what I'm saying?
01:04:35All right, did you,
01:04:36it looked like in the first two rounds,
01:04:39you wanted to get him out of there.
01:04:41Was that in part, at least,
01:04:43because you didn't want to put your hands
01:04:45through 12 tough rounds?
01:04:48Man, I thought, you know,
01:04:50I thought my hands were going to be strong,
01:04:51but my hands did feel good halfway
01:04:54until I hit them on top of the head.
01:04:56But, you know,
01:04:56I'm looking forward to fighting Jesus Chavez.
01:04:58He went out there, put on a good show,
01:05:00put on a good performance,
01:05:01and I just want to keep working hard.
01:05:03I'm young, and I'm still learning.
01:05:04This is something you have to deal with in boxing.
01:05:06Is this the roughest night you've ever had in boxing?
01:05:09To be honest,
01:05:10it was a real rough night,
01:05:14but the main thing is I got through it,
01:05:16and I'm looking forward to bigger and better things.
01:05:18I'm looking forward to fighting Jesus Chavez.
01:05:21Are you going to have to take months off
01:05:24to let your hands heal,
01:05:25perhaps even to have them operated on?
01:05:28I don't know how long I'm going to have to take off,
01:05:30but it was a hard night.
01:05:33It was a hard night,
01:05:33and I'm happy with the victory.
01:05:35All right, you've got,
01:05:36you don't have big hands.
01:05:37Let's hold these hands up.
01:05:39Small hands.
01:05:40Are these knockout hands,
01:05:41I mean, do you see the,
01:05:43there's no bone right here, see?
01:05:44Right.
01:05:45Right over here,
01:05:46you can see there's no knuckle.
01:05:47There's no knuckle right here.
01:05:48Right here.
01:05:50There's no knuckle right here,
01:05:51and I got this thing,
01:05:52a big knock coming right here on the left.
01:05:54Does this mean, basically,
01:05:55you have to be a boxer
01:05:57and let the knockout just come when it comes?
01:06:00That's why in a lot of fights,
01:06:01you see me boxing this move
01:06:02because my hands are hurting,
01:06:03but my hands never hurt me
01:06:04like they hurt me tonight.
01:06:06And so I was just trying to,
01:06:07you know, pity pad and move
01:06:09and get the win the best way I know how.
01:06:11You got the win.
01:06:12Congratulations again, champ.
01:06:14Jim?
01:06:14That's all the time.
01:06:15All right.
01:06:16Thank you very much, Larry.
01:06:17So what are the implications
01:06:18of Floyd Jr.'s hands
01:06:20for the rest of his career?
01:06:21Well, the most important thing
01:06:22is that he's got an opponent in Chavez
01:06:24who's about the same height,
01:06:26pretty much the same style,
01:06:27that can give him a lot of trouble.
01:06:29But if you're going to be a boxer,
01:06:30you've got to live with bad hands.
01:06:31That comes along with the sport.
01:06:32I've had to go into the ring
01:06:33where I couldn't squeeze my hands
01:06:35and Muhammad Ali and all of us.
01:06:37So that's nothing new to the boxing world.
01:06:38So you did fight sometimes
01:06:40when you knew you were entering the ring
01:06:42at less than 100% because of your hands.
01:06:44Most of the time you get into the ring
01:06:46and your hands are sore.
01:06:47And of course,
01:06:48I don't even take the shots
01:06:49because I'm scared of needles.
01:06:51But I'm afraid of needles.
01:06:52But sore hands, broken knuckles,
01:06:55it comes with the sport
01:06:56and there's no way out.
01:06:58If you want to be rich,
01:06:59fight with the knuckles broken.
01:07:00And do most state commissions
01:07:01allow a fighter to get a shot?
01:07:03You don't tell.
01:07:04You let them feel it.
01:07:06Even if they squeeze
01:07:06and hurt your fingers,
01:07:07you say,
01:07:07how does it feel?
01:07:09You say, great.
01:07:10And you go back to the corner
01:07:11somewhere and scream,
01:07:12ouch.
01:07:13But you hide the pain.
01:07:15If you want to make it into the sport,
01:07:16you just cannot.
01:07:18And I feel some compassion for him,
01:07:21but welcome to the real world.
01:07:23If a guy is trying to be a puncher
01:07:25and his hands are constantly breaking,
01:07:27must he change his style
01:07:28and be a boxer?
01:07:29Well, not at all.
01:07:30Some of these big guys
01:07:31are going to run over you.
01:07:32If you don't knock them out,
01:07:33you're not going to be lasting long.
01:07:35You're going to have to get it over with,
01:07:36even if it takes
01:07:37breaking your knuckles once more,
01:07:38of which I've had it done a few times.
01:07:40You just break your knuckles
01:07:41and go to a good doctor.
01:07:43I've got a good doctor in Houston.
01:07:45Go tell Floyd.
01:07:46Well, tell his manager, James Prince.
01:07:48He's from Houston.
01:07:48He'll bring him down there.
01:07:49He can stay at your ranch.
01:07:50Teach him how to ride horseback.
01:07:53Amen.
01:07:53That'll be a lot of fun.
01:07:55Fascinating night.
01:07:56Your thoughts?
01:07:58Well, 24 rounds,
01:08:00about, I don't know,
01:08:0215 or 16 more rounds
01:08:03than perhaps we expected to see.
01:08:06All the fighters seem to have
01:08:08mayhem on their minds,
01:08:11but only misdemeanors in their fists.
01:08:15And so we had long,
01:08:16grueling, hard, tough fights.
01:08:18Let's give a pat on the back
01:08:23to both of the so-called opponents.
01:08:27The guys who got beat.
01:08:28They were tremendously courageous.
01:08:30They came, they fought,
01:08:31they were in shape.
01:08:32They won respect,
01:08:34and they surprised us.
01:08:37Good for them.
01:08:38All right.
01:08:39And also a pat on the back
01:08:40for the resourcefulness
01:08:41of both of the guys
01:08:42who won Chavez and Mayweather.
01:08:43It'll make for an interesting confrontation
01:08:45when it takes place.
01:08:47Well, earlier this evening,
01:08:49we invited you to participate
01:08:50in our website poll
01:08:51and answer the question,
01:08:52who will win
01:08:53the undisputed middleweight championship
01:08:55of the world?
01:08:56And perhaps intoxicated
01:08:58by Felix Trinidad's
01:08:59devastating performances
01:09:01against Fernando Vargas
01:09:02and against William Joppy.
01:09:04You overwhelmingly chose Trinidad
01:09:07to beat Bernard Hopkins this fall
01:09:0877% to 23%.
01:09:12No recount necessary.
01:09:15June 16,
01:09:17undefeated bantamweight champion
01:09:18Tim Austin,
01:09:19fighting in his hometown
01:09:20of Cincinnati, Ohio,
01:09:21makes his Boxing After Dark debut here,
01:09:23taking on Steve Dotsy.
01:09:24Then one week later
01:09:25on TVKO Pay-Per-View,
01:09:27Oscar De La Hoya
01:09:28coming off his destruction
01:09:29of Arturo Gatti,
01:09:30moves up from welterweight
01:09:32to 154 pounds
01:09:33in order to face
01:09:34one of the reigning title holders
01:09:35in that weight class,
01:09:37Javier Castillejo.
01:09:38HBO,
01:09:39the heart and soul of boxing.
