00:00:00June 7, 1996. Oscar De La Hoya reaffirmed his status as one of the best, beating boyhood idol and living legend Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:00:11But an early Chavez cut made De La Hoya's victory too easy. It would haunt both of them for two years.
00:00:19This is youth, talent and ambition against experience, will and pride.
00:00:24And Chavez is already starting to flow above the left thigh.
00:00:28It's very early in the fight for blood to be showing.
00:00:31And now Joe Cortez stops because he wants a doctor to take a look at the cut. Round one.
00:00:37And this blood started flowing less than a minute into the fight.
00:00:40That cut was open in training, you can believe that.
00:00:43Round one has been like Christmas for Oscar De La Hoya.
00:00:47It's no problem, no problem.
00:00:49Arlington by Thomas.
00:00:51That is the third good left hook that Chavez has landed.
00:00:54And the blood bothering Julio as De La Hoya lands a vicious left hook.
00:00:58Now his nose is bleeding too.
00:01:00Chavez's will seeming to be sapped now.
00:01:03As in the last minute of round four, it's been all Oscar De La Hoya.
00:01:07He's calling the fight. The fight is over.
00:01:12While De La Hoya was widely praised, there was one noteworthy detractor.
00:01:16Julio Cesar Chavez infuriated Oscar by refusing to give him credit for the victory.
00:01:22I will make sure I get that respect after this fight.
00:01:25September 18, the rematch.
00:01:28De La Hoya waged his personal war for respect as Chavez battled for revenge and a return to glory.
00:01:34Back live at ringside in Vegas before we go back to look at the fight.
00:01:41A couple of comments beforehand.
00:01:43Larry Merchant, a lot of people expected De La Hoya Chavez 2 to be a mismatch, a wipeout.
00:01:48In the end, it was not.
00:01:49It was a considerably more exciting fight than almost all of us expected.
00:01:53Why?
00:01:54Well, low expectations always helps you.
00:01:57As well as an aging champion who wanted to show what he once was.
00:02:03And as well as a young champion wanting to take vengeance for a victory.
00:02:10What a concept.
00:02:11He had beaten Chavez earlier, as you recall, in four rounds.
00:02:17Chavez put him down for it.
00:02:19De La Hoya took the opportunity to say he wanted to beat him worse, to stop him, make
00:02:25twelve million dollars while he was doing it.
00:02:28And he did it.
00:02:29And in the process, he even got more than he asked for.
00:02:33And so did we.
00:02:34It was an intensely competitive bout.
00:02:36As you're about to see, George Foreman, before we look at it.
00:02:39How much of the relatively close competition and the intensity throughout much of the fight
00:02:45was the product of Oscar De La Hoya fighting a style that benefited Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:02:49How much of it was a proud last stand for the old warrior?
00:02:53I think Oscar De La Hoya had to dig in deep to really get that performance that he gave
00:02:58out this time around.
00:02:59The champion, the ex-champion, Chavez was ready.
00:03:02He stepped out of range, stepped into range.
00:03:04He did everything that you would ask of a fellow to take a title.
00:03:07De La Hoya abandoned his left jab and it was a toe-to-toe knockdown drag out.
00:03:12As you're about to see.
00:03:13So if this is your first chance to watch Oscar De La Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez the
00:03:18second time around, you're going to enjoy it.
00:03:20Let's go back to September 18, 15 days ago in this city.
00:03:27For the second time, Julio Cesar Chavez against Oscar De La Hoya.
00:03:33But this time, two years later, and at significantly different stages of their two careers,
00:03:39then was the case June 7, 1996.
00:03:43Ultimate revenge, they called it.
00:03:45But who was it who was looking for revenge?
00:03:48The man who lost the first fight in the fourth round technical knockout?
00:03:51Or the man who won the first fight, but didn't think he got the respect he deserved?
00:03:56In the Thomas and Mac center, but for a nearly full house, they got ready to answer those questions.
00:04:03Two years, three months, 11 days after their first meeting, the tale of the tape for Oscar
00:04:09De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez the second time.
00:04:13De La Hoya, 11 years younger, three and a half inches taller.
00:04:18He weighed in much closer to the 147 pound limit.
00:04:21Chavez admitting to us yesterday, I just can't get all the way up to 147 pounds while I'm in training.
00:04:26And a five inch reach advantage for De La Hoya.
00:04:29Chavez wouldn't get on a scale tonight.
00:04:31Oscar weighed 162 pounds as he waited in the locker room to come out to the ring for the fight.
00:04:38Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:04:39These are the numbers from the first fight.
00:04:41Of course, it was over in the first minute of the fight.
00:04:45So these numbers may not reflect the actual differences between the fighters.
00:04:50But since that time, they've fought a good fighter in Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:04:55Here were the numbers in that fight.
00:04:57And as you can see, De La Hoya more active, far more accurate than Chavez.
00:05:04Showing his age.
00:05:06Rules of the bout for their unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Lederman.
00:05:10The Oscar de La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:05:15Using the standardized rules of boxing for old world championship fights.
00:05:19There is no standing eight count.
00:05:21No three knockdown rule.
00:05:22Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:05:24And he cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:05:27Including the 12th and final round.
00:05:31Supercesto!
00:05:33You saw the graphic showing you the six instances in which Chavez has won a world championship.
00:05:45Never beyond 140 pounds.
00:05:48One big difference between this fight and its predecessor.
00:05:52Tonight, the weight limit is 147.
00:05:54Back in 1996, they were fighting at 140.
00:05:58A weight much closer to an effective weight for Chavez.
00:06:02This cheering is a tribute to a prized fighter who won the hearts of his countrymen with his skill and his bravery.
00:06:11And his bravery.
00:06:18Julio Cesar Chavez believes this is his 106th fight.
00:06:24We have very carefully checked official records here and in Mexico.
00:06:28And we are convinced it is his 105th that he has fought 104 times.
00:06:33Winning 100.
00:06:35Losing to De La Hoya and to Frankie Randall.
00:06:38And draws with Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:06:43And of course the famous draw with Brunel Whitaker in San Antonio five years ago.
00:06:48De La Hoya will enter wearing the same robe and the same garb that he wore to enter the ring in 1996.
00:07:02The reason?
00:07:03He says this is unfinished business.
00:07:06He thinks the first round of this fight is the fifth round of the last fight.
00:07:11The fifth round of this fight.

00:12:34oscar
00:12:35De La Hoya!
00:12:40Okay, we've both been here many times before.
00:13:07No, the rules and regulations still remain the same, and I will enforce them.
00:13:14Shake hands and good luck.
00:13:20Chavez has not beaten a top fighter in the eight years since his dramatic victory over
00:13:27Mildred Taylor.
00:13:28His task tonight, to beat a top fighter who is bigger and younger.
00:13:35There's been a lot of speculation recent days about whether Julio Cesar Chavez is legitimately
00:13:45conditioned for this fight.
00:13:47He knows what was written about him in the Los Angeles Times by Bill Klasky three days
00:13:51ago.
00:13:52Klasky said that he spent 24 hours in Breckling Ridge, Colorado at Chavez's training camp, and
00:13:56Chavez never lifted a glove during the period of time he was there.
00:13:59So Julio pulled his shirt off for us yesterday and said, look at my hard belly.
00:14:04Look at my muscles.
00:14:05I lifted weights.
00:14:06I'm ready.
00:14:07He'll need it.
00:14:08Chavez's job tonight is to stop, block, and get out of the way of everything.
00:14:13Don't get touched by any of Oscar's shots.
00:14:15Oscar's got to keep his bounce.
00:14:18Don't move forward unless you've got a plan.
00:14:23Died for sure.
00:14:24Chavez staying at a distance to begin round one.
00:14:27Oscar just waiting, and measuring, and looking for a chance to throw his jab.
00:14:30Oscar, I said about the power of any of these big guns, they have their range, he cannot reach
00:14:35out beyond his feet.
00:14:38He cannot reach out beyond his feet.
00:14:40So stay out there, make him stick out and reach out,
00:14:45and eventually close in.
00:14:48That's what Chavez must do.
00:14:50He need only to look at that picture
00:14:52to see part of the problem facing Julio.
00:14:55Oscar is simply a bigger man.
00:14:58Julio is doing good.
00:15:00He's landed a shot, now he moves away.
00:15:02Let Oscar come and pay him back.
00:15:04Naila Oya, in recent fights,
00:15:09has never minded being patient in round one,
00:15:12even against Patrick Charpentier in El Paso.
00:15:14When it was clear Charpentier couldn't hurt him at all,
00:15:17he waited until opportunities opened up.
00:15:20The Oscar danger zone is when he starts jumping and leaping around.
00:15:24So as long as he's not jumping, you can do anything you want,
00:15:27but once he gets to bounce in his legs, stay out of his way.
00:15:30Chavez is doing a good job of that.
00:15:32Once he starts bouncing, move.
00:15:34Because when Delahoy gets the bounce in his legs,
00:15:36that means he's seen something,
00:15:38and his hands start to move more freely, right?
00:15:40There you are.
00:15:41You make him, you just block, stop,
00:15:43and get out of the way of everything for the first four or five rounds.
00:15:50Chavez, right?
00:15:52Garvey was moving away.
00:15:53Yep.
00:15:54A very tactical first round so far.
00:15:58Chavez trying to lure Delahoya into something.
00:16:03Steps over to his left.
00:16:06A couple of Chavez left hooks early.
00:16:08There's a Chavez left jab right here too.
00:16:12Chavez got to be careful now because once he throws in,
00:16:15you got to have your hands up.
00:16:17Hard left hook up top by Delahoya.
00:16:20That's the bounce.
00:16:21Chavez tried to retaliate.
00:16:22There came the bounce.
00:16:23You're right.
00:16:24Yeah, that means he's seen something.
00:16:25Once he sees something, you jump away.
00:16:32That's a hard thing for a puncher to do,
00:16:34is to step back, move out of the way,
00:16:36and that's nothing wrong with it.
00:16:37Just like holding the horn over a Western Sapper.
00:16:40There's nothing wrong.
00:16:41No cut in round one this time.
00:16:44As we go to Julio Cesar Chavez's corner
00:16:46where they speak Spanish,
00:16:47our interpreter there will be Ray Torres.
00:16:51In Delahoya's corner,
00:16:53Oscar is at first reluctant to sit down on the stool.
00:16:57And he won't.
00:16:58You've got legs. Use your legs a little bit.
00:17:19You've got to have your hands in position.
00:17:21And make sure that you move your head.
00:17:24Take it easy, be tranquil, and get some air.
00:17:34It was the jab that busted up Chavez
00:17:37in the first minute of the first fight.
00:17:40He's being asked to throw more jabs now.
00:17:43The length of this fight could be determined
00:17:47by whether or not Chavez cuts again.
00:17:50And as advisor Gil Clancy asks Delahoya to throw the jab,
00:17:53Oscar steps out into round two
00:17:55and begins to try to establish it with three quick jabs.
00:18:03Now we start to see Chavez coming forward,
00:18:05the trademark style that has carried him
00:18:07to 100 official victories over the years.
00:18:12If there's ever a time not to move forward for Chavez,
00:18:14it's the first six rounds of this boxing match.
00:18:17You don't want any moving forward yet.
00:18:19Don't try to mix it up, but this boy can hit.
00:18:23And as Chavez goes in, Delahoya starts to land left hooks.
00:18:27Two sizzling left hooks in that exchange.
00:18:29Now...
00:18:30Right-hand hand-landed.
00:18:31Right-hand hand-landed.
00:18:32That's for Chavez.
00:18:33The Chavez element of the crowd loving it
00:18:34when their man connects.
00:18:35There's a little blood coming from somewhere.
00:18:36I think it's that left eye already again.
00:18:38Of Julio.
00:18:39Julio Chavez is cut already.
00:18:45Well, you've got to bet on Julio to bleed given his record in recent fights.
00:18:47In four of the last eight fights for Chavez,
00:18:51he has been bloodied by the time the final bell sounded.
00:18:53that left eye already again of julio julio chavez is cut already well you gotta bet on julio to
00:18:59bleed given his record in recent fights in four of the last eight fights for chavez he has been
00:19:05bloodied by the time the final bell sounded he had a plastic surgeon to take all of the scar tissue
00:19:11out but sometimes you know you don't have much in there once you take that out to protect the blows
00:19:17it doesn't look like a cut it looks like an abrasion but blood is starting to form on his
00:19:21left eyebrow again yeah but he doesn't want to be caught by oscar's jab now you want to sit back
00:19:27do the same thing you did in the first round don't allow this guy to start connecting with
00:19:31that left jab because if you do he's going to get you with 20 more yeah hell of a bad fight
00:19:37if he doesn't do something yeah but that's just about winning now it's not about proving anything
00:19:43just go out there and win they exchange punches de laoya landed a thunderous right hand chavez takes
00:19:53it keeps coming forward but he's getting into it he's getting into a firefight with chavez i don't
00:19:59know that that's what he really wants to do oh yeah he doesn't mind this boy's got the power let me tell
00:20:05you and he's got eyes he sees exactly what he's doing he didn't want to let chavez get any confidence
00:20:11this early in the fight that's what you don't want the old guy starts to feel at home and you're
00:20:15going to feel like you're going to have a horrible night john has insisted to us that de la hoya isn't
00:20:22a particularly hard puncher certainly not as hard a puncher as edwin rosario or roger mayweather or
00:20:28some of the other guys that he chavez has been in with de la hoya would love to prove that observation
00:20:33wrong de la hoya has got to start working on his left jab now this is not the kind of fight you want
00:20:39with an experience fighter and de la hoya staring daggers at tubas as richard steel separates them
00:20:52to end the second let's go to work you're all right you gotta do your work nice and easy
00:21:07how do you feel
00:21:17i'm okay when you get near move side to side move your weights and get in
00:21:26you gotta watch out because you're gonna accept
00:21:29so they worked on chavez's left eye between rounds you saw the pressure above the eyebrow now oscar's
00:21:52starting to operate with his left jab he turns on the left jab that's no contest
00:21:58he only threw nine jabs in round two i'm sure gill clancy would like to see 30.
00:22:02belloween countering as chavez comes in and a low blow back
00:22:08time time go to corner go to corner it's the warning keep him up okay one
00:22:15you heard richard steel give a warning to chavez i'm not sure getting angry is good for us no oscar
00:22:23but he should be listening to his corner most importantly right now
00:22:28now chavez this has turned into what he wanted to turn into he gets that 12 inches and he starts
00:22:33doing a lot of things he's out way away when he's not doing anything when he's effective he gets close
00:22:40you get close or you stay far away chavez might gladly give up a penalty point
00:22:45to get oscar to abandon his game plan and war with him yeah but oscar once he gets that left jab going
00:22:51he's got it
00:23:03chavez getting his jab going and starting the exchanges with his jab
00:23:10de la roya landing counters but not really commanding for long range yet chavez yeah chavez much sharper
00:23:17much better in this fight than he was the first time around oscar is going to have to fight tonight
00:23:23and that's nothing wrong with that there's nothing wrong with fighting jay up and dig in you can make
00:23:27this guy back up too
00:23:28once he once he was relentlessly aggressive chavez he's showing that as he gets older he had other
00:23:38virtues as a fighter that he knows how to fight posing as a gorilla sniper here and with surprising
00:23:46effectiveness particularly here in the third round now delahoya goes to the body with that left hand now
00:23:52that will change everything and delahoy is off overlooked right hand landing there on a solid
00:23:59right cross you notice about the experienced fighter you get hit hurt you get hurt you don't
00:24:03try to pay back you just stop the fight oscar missing with the left hook upstairs still not establishing
00:24:11the jab i think the greatest mistake oscar has got to understand that without his jab he's just as
00:24:18ordinary as chevez tonight he's got to distinguish himself with his left jab
00:24:22left hook to the body by delahoya chavez bulls in and lands a right to the rib cage
00:24:44right cross again seems to be open for delahoya lead right hand and a left hook by chavez
00:24:51hard left hook by chavez to punctuate the best round he's fought against oscar delahoya in two fights
00:25:04there you see the flurry by delahoya and as chavez comes in throwing that very low blow
00:25:12down around tierra del fuego right there
00:25:15and here was the delahoya reaction
00:25:27all right you get to literally there's nothing happening okay everything's all right
00:25:31we're very very calm
00:25:45he's first with the jack
00:25:47in round three oscar delahoya landed 26 of 51 punches
00:25:52william says that chavez only 230 but he landed 17 and a couple of them were highly effective left
00:25:58including the one that finished the round when it's thrown oscar off a lot
00:26:04chavez has not been aggressive he stays his distance just recreated a whole nother fight
00:26:09a whole nother training camp
00:26:14he walks forward gets a little distance and backs out
00:26:17how stunning it would be to delahoya and his supporters if this became a tactical boxing match
00:26:30without a left jab oscar delahoy you believe me he'll he'll be swimming and he's swimming in deep water
00:26:36good jab to the body by delahoya another good left jab now he's picking it up
00:26:48and a little fake you faint it you do it so he brings the left jab to the body twice
00:26:54back upstairs chavez extends the right hand and delahoya lands a left hook over it
00:26:59delahoya lands a straight right chavez suddenly stops throwing punches
00:27:04chavez landed a good shot so he started to kind of assess what he's done he's done
00:27:09oscar's going to hit him back he's young you hit the young guys they're going to hit you back
00:27:14whether they can see you or not
00:27:15crowd chanting chavez chavez delahoya landing another right cross and the left hook upstairs
00:27:31this round has been a mystery for chavez he's only landed one or two and delahoya is countering
00:27:36effectively but still oscar not establishing the left jab in the way you might have expected
00:27:41it now we got the left jab now it's multiplying and you see the bounce in the feet you don't want
00:27:48him to get that about um chavez you get a little closer make him stop bouncing his confidence comes
00:27:54when he's bouncing you notice chavez once delahoya starts to bounce he backs away you can only do that
00:28:06with 34 30 years 34 35 years you just don't challenge those guys
00:28:20this round a scoring round for delahoya who has piled up the punch count on chavez
00:28:26chavez not busy here there's a good left hook inside by julio
00:28:30he'll start to pick up his confidence and that's when oscar's more dangerous when you get confident
00:28:37and delahoya meeting chavez with an uppercut as julio stepped inside to try to score with the left again
00:28:45now julio is landing left jabs now you don't want that to start happening julio's been surprisingly
00:28:52affected with his jab through the first four
00:29:10first time delahoya has sat down in his corner
00:29:14oscar i want you to move a little bit more side to side and use more the jab you got the key now
00:29:19us you got the key like this round this round use this round as an example okay
00:29:23this time it was very good next day
00:29:27everything is under control
00:29:30he's he's he's like he is
00:29:33okay you gotta see what you want
00:29:41here you'll see some back at you chavez lands
00:29:44delahoya responds
00:29:48watch chavez as he sit on the ring from the edge of that ring he's ready to jump up
00:29:53you know it figures in a fight like this that chavez gets two years older
00:29:58delahoya two years better but chavez while being two years older is also
00:30:05better certainly than he was in their first fight
00:30:08harold how'd you score through the first four well jim i've got a three to one 39 37 oscar de la
00:30:13jolla i get this hit to rent to julio season travis when he made asking though he was in a fight
00:30:18but i tell you something oscar's getting me nervous by keeping those hands down to his waist i don't
00:30:22know why he's doing that he's leaving his jaw exposed but be as a mate i still think oscar's living
00:30:27in the adrenal heart of punches and certainly he's the busier fighter
00:30:30he also has a little cut on the left side of his face yes little nick by oscar's left eye
00:30:36i have the same story as harold
00:30:42now this fight has turned into what chavez wanted to do you know you bounce you come a little closer
00:30:47to me every now and then i'll pay you back he's using his left jab more effectively now than oscar's
00:30:53left jab you don't want that oscar's doing right now bouncing jail this is to my eyes the most effective
00:31:01julio cesar chavez we've seen in quite a while and even at that by compu box numbers he's been doubled
00:31:07in punch output and in landed punches
00:31:11oscar keeps his hands low because chavez is shorter he gets a little lower sometimes if your
00:31:18hands up high you just can't get any shots it's like a gunslinger you keep it to your waist to draw
00:31:23quick you think it also suggests that oscar doesn't think chavez can hurt him no he's just he wants to
00:31:29hit he want to land a shot and he can't be done with his hands up high chevez reaches right in and
00:31:36stops everything good left hook by julio cesar chavez he tries to follow up stepping up onto the ropes
00:31:42delaware goes away and lands a combination to the belly and those those body shots are going to be the
00:31:47winning winning edge for oscar he's going to have to put a lot in now go to the body and make this
00:31:52gas extend this stay in the ring but take his power away from it
00:31:59once jeb jolted good left yellow his face registering maximum intensity
00:32:08hard right hand over the top by oscar now he's boxing bouncing from side to side creating angles
00:32:20landing as he has throughout the bout now he must not pay any attention to the referee saying watch
00:32:25your shoulder you do everything you can two good body shots by julio hearkening back to the chavez of old
00:32:32chavez continues to go to the rib cage delaware just misses with a potentially lethal uppercut and i
00:32:41told you it has a 12-inch difference but oscar's got no power you got to stay within that 12-inch
00:32:48delaware going body and upstairs chavez coming right back
00:32:57richard steel with two angry warriors on his hands tonight
00:33:02i told you slim was gaining weight tonight
00:33:07slim gained weight in the first five rounds
00:33:11don't go that wide and you have to use more your legs you have to use more
00:33:15the jabs all right are you listening okay
00:33:19you gotta prepare the right hand you're doing okay you're doing real fine
00:33:38nothing nothing happening
00:33:49don't lose your calm don't lose your cool
00:33:56between rounds here
00:33:57the early and cut man chuck bodak with some rare work oscar's never been seriously cut in a fight
00:34:04god was working on the left side to the outside i should say of the left eye
00:34:09Oscar's blowing his nose a lot these days.
00:34:13That won't help that little cut on the side
00:34:14and make him swell.
00:34:17Well, and unlike a fighter like Chávez,
00:34:19De La Hoya is not accustomed to the sight of his own blood.
00:34:21So if it starts to flow,
00:34:23it'll be an interesting test for him.
00:34:26Chávez threw 48 punches in round five.
00:34:28That's the most he's ever thrown
00:34:30in any of 12 rounds or 9 rounds he's fought
00:34:33against Oscar De La Hoya.
00:34:35Oscar hasn't been beaten at the jab in a long time.
00:34:38And Chávez is doing that.
00:34:40Oscar's got to keep his jab up
00:34:42because he has the better in the reach.
00:34:44Use that reach.
00:34:45Don't get close to this man.
00:34:47Well, the hands held low,
00:34:49as Harold Letterman pointed out,
00:34:51and you emphasize, George, why Oscar's doing it,
00:34:53but the hands held low give Chávez a chance to land his jab.
00:34:57And once he gets closer, De La Hoya's got to move away.
00:35:00Bounce. Use your...
00:35:02You see, he pushes him
00:35:03because he doesn't want him that close.
00:35:05Back away.
00:35:05This is everything that Chávez wanted right now.
00:35:13Remember when Sugar Ray Leonard
00:35:15got lured into playing Roberto Duran's macho game?
00:35:19This is one of those nights.
00:35:21You've got to win a fight sometimes.
00:35:23This guy is all hyped up.
00:35:24You just can't outpunch him.
00:35:26You're going to have to box him and win on points.
00:35:27There's a little bit of Sugar Ray against Duran
00:35:31in Delaware against Chávez tonight.
00:35:36Remember, you close in at 12 inches
00:35:39and De La Hoya's got no power at all.
00:35:43Chávez is doing an excellent job of staying close.
00:35:45Great step-back step.
00:35:46Watch your shoulder.
00:35:49Come on, Chávez!
00:35:51He's only an ordinary fighter
00:35:54when he's hit close to Chávez.
00:35:58Chávez following the George Foreman blueprint
00:36:00to perfection right now.
00:36:02You heard George tell you
00:36:03before the fight
00:36:04that Duran-Bez must step up
00:36:05into Dela Hoya's chest.
00:36:07Not only is Dela Hoya's hands starting to drop,
00:36:10his shoulders are starting to drop.
00:36:12A lot of conditioning
00:36:13is going out of the window now.
00:36:14But things are changing.
00:36:17That's when you want good legs.
00:36:19Good body shot by Dela Hoya.
00:36:21Good left hook up top by Chávez.
00:36:24Dela Hoya willing to trade at close range.
00:36:27Is it the right strategy?
00:36:29He's got no choice.
00:36:32It's a good left uppercut by Dela Hoya.
00:36:35Chávez seemingly unhurt
00:36:36by the vicious uppercut
00:36:38that snapped his head back.
00:36:39But he was hurt by the left hook
00:36:41to the body by Dela Hoya.
00:36:42Ooh, another left hook by Chávez.
00:36:44Hard left hook by Dela Hoya.
00:36:47Right on the corner of the chin.
00:36:52Oscar trying to explode Chávez
00:36:54as they reach the mid-forward point of the back.
00:37:04Close your eyes.
00:37:07They're just rims under me, okay?
00:37:11Close your eyes.
00:37:12Respira, descansa.
00:37:13Close your eyes.
00:37:13Don't, don't, don't stay too long inside, Oscar.
00:37:17You have to use it.
00:37:17One round.
00:37:18Give yourself a breather.
00:37:20Box around.
00:37:21Okay?
00:37:21You don't have to go on and knock him out.
00:37:24Box around.
00:37:25Okay?
00:37:25You don't have to go on and knock him out.
00:37:28Box around.
00:37:29You don't have to go on and knock him out.
00:37:30You don't have to go on and knock him out.
00:37:31You don't have to go on and knock him out.
00:37:32Okay.
00:37:33Deep breath.
00:37:34Go up and down.
00:37:35And you need to shorten up the distance.
00:37:37Here's Chávez now pressing the attack.
00:37:44But here's the uppercut from Dela Hoya landing flush.
00:37:48The story of this fight so far, Chávez has not been cut.
00:37:54And he has taken Dela Hoya's best shots and keeps coming.
00:38:01Gil Clancy told Dela Hoya, now box.
00:38:04You don't have to go for the knockout now.
00:38:05Box a little bit.
00:38:06Let's hope he takes that advice.
00:38:12Dela Hoya starting to pump the jab.
00:38:15This is what makes him great when he does it.
00:38:18And then as an experienced fighter, Chávez, get on the outside.
00:38:22Concede all of that.
00:38:23Just don't start a fight.
00:38:26It's like the home run hitter who goes for home runs and goes into a slump.
00:38:30Gil Clancy knew deep in his heart he would increase Dela Hoya's.
00:38:34Dela Hoya's chances of scoring a knockout
00:38:35if he could convince his man not to go for a knockout.
00:38:39And Chávez is real smart.
00:38:41He turns his body left, turns his body right.
00:38:43That means Dela Hoya's got to stand there and watch him
00:38:45until he straightens up again.
00:38:48Oscar just popping Chávez with the jab as Julio comes in.
00:38:52That's a strategy he has not been using in the earlier rounds.
00:38:57Dela Hoya now is avoiding that close contact now.
00:39:00He backs away, which is what he should have been doing all night.
00:39:03Chávez landing a jab and a right hand over the top.
00:39:06Doubling up on his hooks.
00:39:13Now he's allowed Dela Hoya to find that range in there.
00:39:15That's what you don't want to do.
00:39:18Stay away from him.
00:39:19Make him guess by not being in that range.
00:39:21If Oscar's in contention or in condition to keep throwing the jab,
00:39:26he commands Chávez from long range.
00:39:32He was smart.
00:39:33He did his combinations and he backed away.
00:39:35That's what you want to do.
00:39:36Make this guy earn everything he gets.
00:39:39Chávez coming forward, tracking his man around the ring,
00:39:42looking very, very Chávez,
00:39:45even as he fails, it seems, to win rounds
00:39:48because of the number of punches Dela Hoya lands.
00:39:51Well, Dela Hoya was smart.
00:39:52In the last round, he was able to get to that body.
00:39:54Hard right hand by Chávez.
00:39:57Chávez is still hurting from that early body punch in the last round.
00:40:00Good left hook inside by Julio.
00:40:10A little cut over the right eye of Chávez now.
00:40:13Just a little trickle of blood above the right eyebrow.
00:40:16At his best, nobody ever took a shot better than Chávez.
00:40:21And he's showing some of that iron jaw and true grit.
00:40:26A lot of that now, he's trying to avoid being cut these days.
00:40:30So that's why he's not really standing toe-to-toe.
00:40:34Now he's making the mistake of following a puncher around again.
00:40:38You don't want to follow a puncher.
00:40:40Why?
00:40:41No, sir.
00:40:41Because the puncher's got something in that bag.
00:40:44You back away from a puncher.
00:40:46You don't follow him around.
00:40:47This has been a big round for Dela Hoya.
00:40:50Chávez has been a target.
00:40:52And for the first time in the fight,
00:40:54a relatively easy target.
00:41:00Don't try to hit him.
00:41:16Don't ever extend yourself to hit him with the right hand.
00:41:18You've got to use more intelligence.
00:41:20Fox him!
00:41:22Okay, you need to do me a little more quicker.
00:41:24You're going to add...
00:41:27Hold on a second.
00:41:28He's a little swollen there.
00:41:29No entres a de frente.
00:41:36In and out by this round.
00:41:39Beautiful, okay?
00:41:40Once again, we see Dela Hoya landing his left hand right there.
00:41:47And Chávez coming back with the right hand.
00:41:49Let's go, sir.
00:41:49Let's go.
00:41:57Round eight of a scheduled 12.
00:41:59Dela Hoya said before the fight,
00:42:01he hoped it would go seven or eight rounds
00:42:03so that he could punish Chávez
00:42:04for the impudence he displayed after the last fight.
00:42:07Harold Letterman, how do you have it through seven?
00:42:09Jim, 69, 64, six rounds to one.
00:42:13Oscar Dela Hoya.
00:42:14Jim, it's effective aggressiveness that counts.
00:42:16Julio César Chávez sometimes is the aggressor,
00:42:19but he doesn't score.
00:42:20Oscar's just not punching him like he's doing right now.
00:42:23Serious business.
00:42:25Dela Hoya to the body with vicious shots
00:42:27in the first half minute of this round.
00:42:29No doubt about it.
00:42:31He's got that confidence level up now.
00:42:33And Chávez is making an awful mistake
00:42:35of following him around.
00:42:36He's just like a punching bag at this point.
00:42:39You always concede to the puncher.
00:42:42I'm not going to follow you so you can get sent.
00:42:45I have the same score as Harold.
00:42:48The issue now seems to be at this point in the fight
00:42:51whether Chávez can make it through 12 rounds
00:42:55and claim some kind of victory
00:42:56because Dela Hoya insisted that he would get a knockout.
00:43:01Well, one thing's for sure.
00:43:06It's a more committed and more spirited effort from Chávez
00:43:08than his severest critics would have expected.
00:43:11Yeah.
00:43:12The rematch hasn't turned out to be the mismatch
00:43:15everybody presumed it might be.
00:43:17Chávez's mask beginning to show the effects
00:43:22of Dela Hoya punishment.
00:43:24Oscar concentrating on the body here in round eight.
00:43:29Almost as though he's consciously trying to set Julio up
00:43:32for something big upstairs.
00:43:34Oscar's very smart.
00:43:35He gets in, but he stands up and gets that height advantage
00:43:38whenever things get too rough
00:43:39so did our Chávez misses.
00:43:42Oscar landing left hooks and uppercuts.
00:43:45Another one there as Julio came in.
00:43:47A little swelling under the left eye of Dela Hoya.
00:43:49We told you about the nick at the corner of the eye before.
00:43:53So both fighters showing some effects.
00:43:57Now this should not have happened with Oscar.
00:43:59He should not have gotten into this kind of fight.
00:44:02His corner's going to have to rein him in now.
00:44:05Blood now pouring from the lip or mouth
00:44:08of Chávez.
00:44:11But further he comes.
00:44:14He steps over to Oscar's left
00:44:15and he steps over to his right
00:44:17whenever there's danger.
00:44:21And he's hitting below the belt occasionally too.
00:44:25Hitting below the belt three or four times there.
00:44:27Richard Steele doing nothing.
00:44:29Dela Hoya willing to trade shot for shot
00:44:31with Julio Cesar Chávez.
00:44:33A lot of swelling under Dela Hoya's left eye.
00:44:35Looks like it might swell shot
00:44:37as the fight goes on.
00:44:39Remember, Chávez has been beaten like this
00:44:41round after round before in his life.
00:44:43But Dela Hoya, this is new territory.
00:44:47Dela Hoya so conscious of offense with his left hand
00:44:51that he's sometimes susceptible
00:44:53on that side of his right hand.
00:44:54Oh, what a left hand.
00:44:58That's the meanest looking Oscar Dela Hoya
00:45:01you've ever seen.
00:45:02It's a small crack.
00:45:19I'm going to stop the bleeding.
00:45:23inside the mouth so you can rinse.
00:45:30Put some water in the face.
00:45:32Put some water in the face.
00:45:37There you see that flurry at the end of the round.
00:45:52Chávez looking a little weary.
00:45:57It must be a fight.
00:45:59Chávez won't come out.
00:46:01He has refused to come out.
00:46:03The inside of his mouth bloodied.
00:46:06And I am shocked.
00:46:08Shocked that a warrior like Chávez
00:46:11once again,
00:46:13when he tastes his own blood,
00:46:16sits on his stool,
00:46:18won't come out and fight.
00:46:19Julio César Chávez slaughtered us yesterday.
00:46:24He said if he beats me this time,
00:46:26I will give him the respect he deserves.
00:46:29Let's see if he will.
00:46:31We don't know if the doctor has said anything though.
00:46:34Well, the doctor came in, George,
00:46:35and told the referee the fight could go on.
00:46:39But apparently that was a no-must
00:46:41from Chávez.
00:46:46He did his best.
00:46:47And when this guy kept having some stinging to his power,
00:46:51for a 36-year-old guy
00:46:53who used to be a lightweight,
00:46:55he gave everything he had.
00:46:59But still, you expect him to go on.
00:47:02I think it was, Larry.
00:47:03Right up until the moment it ended,
00:47:06it was the best Chávez effort
00:47:07of the last several years.
00:47:10Must have been a fight.
00:47:11I've got blood splattered all over my scorecard.
00:47:14I'm Itambian.
00:47:18The white quad we told me once
00:47:19in a boxing match with me,
00:47:21he said,
00:47:21you know,
00:47:21I saw death.
00:47:23Sometimes you can see a lot of things in that ring.
00:47:26I mean,
00:47:26the doctor won't stop it.
00:47:28You got to come in and say,
00:47:29look,
00:47:29I got to have mercy on myself.
00:47:31And let's face it,
00:47:31George,
00:47:32what does Julio César Chávez
00:47:34have left to prove at this point?
00:47:35He did the best he could.
00:47:37Believe me,
00:47:37the best.
00:47:38But Oscar kept giving more than his best.
00:47:41Well,
00:47:41it sets up a hell of a match
00:47:43on November 21.
00:47:45Oscar De La Hoya
00:47:45is going to take on Ike Quarté,
00:47:47his toughest opponent yet.
00:47:54Oscar could have made that
00:47:55one of the toughest fights
00:47:56in the career
00:47:57because he just wanted to show off
00:47:59the need to have been like that.
00:48:03Third loss of Chávez's career.
00:48:06Second time he's been stopped
00:48:07in a fight with Oscar De La Hoya.
00:48:10Okay,
00:48:11now that was the end
00:48:11of the preceding round.
00:48:12Here's what happened
00:48:13on Chávez's stool.
00:48:16A lot of that is breathing there.
00:48:18Try to get your tongue out
00:48:20and in to suck up.
00:48:22Yeah,
00:48:23you can see the blood
00:48:24coming out of his mouth.
00:48:25I think maybe his tongue was cut.
00:48:27Yeah,
00:48:27a lot of things can happen
00:48:28to you in those kind of combinations
00:48:29being thrown.
00:48:33Final punch stat numbers.
00:48:35Oscar De La Hoya's accuracy
00:48:37increased as the fight went on,
00:48:39but he got hit
00:48:39and hit more often
00:48:40than most anybody
00:48:41would have expected
00:48:42in one round.
00:48:43Chávez actually threw
00:48:4490 punches against De La Hoya,
00:48:45and I'm not sure anybody
00:48:46has ever accomplished that
00:48:47against Oscar before.
00:48:50Jabs in the bout.
00:48:51De La Hoya cranked it up
00:48:52in the middle rounds
00:48:53and wound up landing 76 of 169.
00:48:56And once he got the jab in gear,
00:48:59it was clear that Chávez
00:49:00had no easy chance
00:49:01of getting back into the fight.
00:49:03And now let's go to Michael Buffer
00:49:05for the official particulars.
00:49:08Ladies and gentlemen,
00:49:08the challenger's corner
00:49:10advised referee Richard Steele
00:49:12that he was unable to continue.
00:49:16The end comes at the end
00:49:18of round number eight.
00:49:19The winner by knockout victory
00:49:21and still the defending
00:49:24and reigning, undefeated
00:49:26WBC welterweight champion
00:49:29of the world,
00:49:31El Nino de Oro,
00:49:33the golden boy,
00:49:35Oscar De La Hoya.
00:49:40Through the eight rounds
00:49:56they completed,
00:49:57De La Hoya led on two scorecards
00:50:01by a three-point margin,
00:50:0278-75,
00:50:04and on the third scorecard
00:50:05by a six-point margin,
00:50:0779-73.
00:50:08So he was effectively
00:50:10in control of the bout
00:50:12at the moment
00:50:13at which it was stopped.
00:50:15Ladies and gentlemen,
00:50:16I'm going to round the applause
00:50:17for the glorious career
00:50:19of one of the greatest fighters
00:50:20in boxing history.
00:50:23It was a full house,
00:50:25and they got their money's worth.
00:50:28You know, Oscar was saved
00:50:29this time by his corner
00:50:30when Clancy told him
00:50:31to move and box.
00:50:33Don't look for a knockout.
00:50:34He changed the whole story.
00:50:35Good advice from Gil Clancy,
00:50:37and why not?
00:50:37The man's a legend.
00:50:39Let's go to Larry Merchant
00:50:40in the ring with De La Hoya.
00:50:41Thank you, Jim.
00:50:43Congratulations, Oscar.
00:50:45Is this the fight
00:50:46you wanted to fight
00:50:48in this rematch?
00:50:49Not at all.
00:50:50I did total opposite
00:50:53of what we worked on,
00:50:55but I felt stronger than him.
00:50:57In terms of the result?
00:50:59The result?
00:51:00Hey, he quit.
00:51:01That's all I want.
00:51:01You made it.
00:51:02And he expected me
00:51:03after the fight.
00:51:04What did he say to you?
00:51:04He told me,
00:51:05you know what?
00:51:06You beat me.
00:51:08Is it a satisfaction
00:51:09and a surprise to you
00:51:11that you made
00:51:11the great warrior
00:51:13quit on his stool?
00:51:15Well, hey,
00:51:16a lot of people
00:51:17didn't believe me,
00:51:18and whoever didn't believe me,
00:51:19hey, that's their fault,
00:51:20not mine.
00:51:20I'm going to keep on going
00:51:21and trying to become
00:51:22the best fighter in the world.
00:51:23And I did a lot of mistakes today
00:51:24that I knew I picked up on.
00:51:26We'll go back to the gym
00:51:27and work on them.
00:51:28Is that because
00:51:29this was such
00:51:30an emotional night for you?
00:51:32Well, because it was all,
00:51:33I was too tense.
00:51:34I was, uh,
00:51:35the hype,
00:51:35the media,
00:51:36everything.
00:51:36I was too tense
00:51:37and too, uh,
00:51:38I wasn't relaxed
00:51:39and I wasn't doing my game.
00:51:40But I picked up on that
00:51:41and I'm going to work on,
00:51:42work on that in the gym.
00:51:44Were you surprised,
00:51:46Abe,
00:51:47that he didn't cut up
00:51:48when you hit him
00:51:49so many times in the face?
00:51:51I was, uh,
00:51:52not surprised at all
00:51:52because, um,
00:51:53I didn't stick that solid jab
00:51:54that I had the first time around.
00:51:55Um, so, um,
00:51:57when he didn't cut
00:51:58as soon as I was,
00:51:59uh, expecting it to,
00:52:00um, it, uh,
00:52:02no, it didn't surprise me at all.
00:52:04Did he give you more
00:52:05than you could have
00:52:06anticipated from him?
00:52:07No, he's a tough warrior.
00:52:09I mean,
00:52:09any guy against him
00:52:10will, will do, uh,
00:52:12will do even worse
00:52:13because he's such a warrior.
00:52:14He was in the best shape
00:52:15of his life.
00:52:15I guarantee that.
00:52:18Looking ahead,
00:52:19everybody wants to see you
00:52:20fight the top young
00:52:22challengers out there.
00:52:23Ike Korte is first.
00:52:24Your thoughts now
00:52:26about that.
00:52:27Oh, I just can't wait.
00:52:28Ike Korte is a
00:52:28respectable fighter.
00:52:30He's, uh,
00:52:31one of the best out there.
00:52:32And you're gonna see, uh,
00:52:33if you thought you saw
00:52:33a war tonight,
00:52:35you're gonna see
00:52:35a real win on November.
00:52:36Thank you very much.
00:52:37Jacob, my son.
00:52:38I love you.
00:52:39He's seven months today,
00:52:40so, mwah,
00:52:41this is for you.
00:52:43As we speak,
00:52:44Oscar De La Hoya
00:52:45is already in training
00:52:46for that November 21 bout
00:52:48with Ike Korte.
00:52:48And about a half hour
00:52:50after the fight,
00:52:51in company with our
00:52:52Spanish interpreter,
00:52:52Ray Torres,
00:52:53our Larry Merchant
00:52:54caught up to Julio Cesar Chavez
00:52:56in his dressing room.
00:52:59Julio,
00:53:00you seem to be able
00:53:02to lure
00:53:02De La Hoya
00:53:04into your
00:53:05kind of fight.
00:53:07Why was he able
00:53:08to do so well
00:53:09in your
00:53:10kind of fight?
00:53:11He didn't answer
00:53:37the question,
00:53:38but he says
00:53:39that in the corner
00:53:39didn't let him come up
00:53:40because he had a big cut,
00:53:41but he believes
00:53:42he gave a great fight.
00:53:44You did give
00:53:44a very big effort
00:53:46and you didn't cut.
00:53:48What did you find out
00:53:49about De La Hoya
00:53:51as a fighter
00:53:52in this fight?
00:53:52We know
00:53:53that you did
00:53:53a great effort
00:53:54and you didn't cut you.
00:53:55What did you learn
00:53:56from De La Hoya
00:53:57or what did you learn
00:53:57from De La Hoya
00:53:58in this fight?
00:53:59Well,
00:54:00he's a great fighter
00:54:03but he deserves
00:54:07my respect.
00:54:08He won a good law.
00:54:10Felicidades De La Hoya
00:54:11but I believe
00:54:14that I showed him
00:54:15that I'm not finished
00:54:16and I showed him
00:54:17that a lot of people
00:54:17that I'm not finished.
00:54:18I learned that De La Hoya
00:54:20is a great fighter
00:54:20and all my respect to him.
00:54:22I take my head off to him
00:54:23but I showed him
00:54:24that I am not finished.
00:54:26There's still a lot
00:54:26of Chavez left.
00:54:28Very good.
00:54:29Were you,
00:54:30were you,
00:54:32you said after the first fight
00:54:33that he never was able
00:54:35to hurt you?
00:54:37Was he a good,
00:54:37is he a good puncher
00:54:39or not?
00:54:39He's a good puncher
00:54:41but he's not a real knockout artist.
00:54:47As you can see,
00:54:48he never knocked me out.
00:54:49He's a good puncher,
00:54:51but he's not a real knockout artist.
00:54:52As you can see,
00:54:53he never knocked me out.
00:54:54He's a good puncher.
00:55:02He's a good puncher,
00:55:03but he's not a real knockout artist.
00:55:05As you can see,
00:55:06he never knocked me out.
00:55:07He deserves my respect.
00:55:11We can remember
00:55:12when you made
00:55:13an outstanding fighter
00:55:14like Mayweather
00:55:15quit the fight.
00:55:18It seemed to us
00:55:20that in this fight,
00:55:22De La Hoya
00:55:23made you quit
00:55:24in the corner.
00:55:25Are you disappointed in that
00:55:27or did your,
00:55:28or did your handlers
00:55:30not allow you
00:55:31to come out?
00:55:31Nosotros nos recordamos
00:55:32de la pelea
00:55:33que tú tuviste grande,
00:55:34especialmente con Mayweather,
00:55:35que lo hiciste,
00:55:36que se rajara en la esquina.
00:55:37Esta vez,
00:55:38te rajaste tú en la esquina
00:55:39o fue que tú...
00:55:40Bullshit!
00:55:41No se rajó.
00:55:41Okay?
00:55:42Bullshit!
00:55:43Él está diciendo,
00:55:43te está preguntando...
00:55:43Yo no me rajé.
00:55:44No, no.
00:55:45Tú tampoco, no, okay?
00:55:45No, no,
00:55:45te está diciendo...
00:55:46Suáltame en la mano.
00:55:47No, no, no.
00:55:48Que si la esquina...
00:55:49Yo nunca me rajé.
00:55:50No, yo...
00:55:51No, tú, shut up!
00:55:52Okay?
00:55:53No, no, eso que dijo.
00:55:54Tú no estás transmitiendo...
00:55:55Tú no estás...
00:55:56No estás traduciendo
00:55:57lo que yo estoy diciendo, okay?
00:55:58Will you continue to fight?
00:56:00Yo no me rajé.
00:56:01El esquina no dejó salir.
00:56:02Eso fue lo que yo te iba a preguntar.
00:56:04Que si te rajaste tú,
00:56:06tu esquina te hizo rajar por la esquina.
00:56:07¡En la esquina!
00:56:08Claro, en la esquina no me dejó salir.
00:56:10Exacto.
00:56:10Eso es lo que yo le iba a contestar.
00:56:11Nada más te hice la pregunta.
00:56:13Yo sé que tú eres
00:56:14y él lo sabe.
00:56:15Y lo dijo.
00:56:16What was he saying?
00:56:17He says that he did not quit.
00:56:19He's a man.
00:56:20He's a whole heart.
00:56:22Like we always know
00:56:22what a brave type of person he is.
00:56:25And he didn't quit.
00:56:26The corner stopped the fight
00:56:27because of the cut.
00:56:28Will he continue to fight?
00:56:30¿El continuo era tú peleando?
00:56:32Claro que sí.
00:56:32Yo quiero seguir peleando.
00:56:33He wants to fight.
00:56:34El médico mismo no me dejó salir pelear.
00:56:37His doctor did not let him continue the fight.
00:56:40Thank you very much.
00:56:41Las cortadas aquí en el labio son muy aparatosas.
00:56:43The cuts inside the lips are very, very harmful.
00:56:47Thank you very much.
00:56:48Back now to tonight, October 3 at the Las Vegas Hilton
00:56:53where I'm joined on camera
00:56:54by our Spanish interpreter, Ray Torres.
00:56:56And before we begin this conversation,
00:56:57I should tell you
00:56:58that Ray's not only a master of both Spanish and English
00:57:01but also a former fighter himself.
00:57:03Ray, you've had the benefit now
00:57:04of looking back at videotape
00:57:06both of the sequence that ended the fight
00:57:08in Chávez's corner
00:57:09and then also the interview
00:57:10that you and Larry conducted with Chávez.
00:57:12First, the end of the fight.
00:57:14What more can you tell us now
00:57:16about the decision in Julio's corner
00:57:18to stop the proceedings?
00:57:20I believe that the whole decision was based on him.
00:57:22He decided that he didn't want to continue.
00:57:25He fought gallantly
00:57:26like an old champion, brave man that he is.
00:57:30But he figured he was defeated
00:57:32sort of like what happened tonight.
00:57:36The old champion just got beaten.
00:57:37When he was asked
00:57:38if he wanted to continue fighting
00:57:40did he refer to the blood coming out of his mouth?
00:57:41No, he was asked
00:57:44there was a question from the corner
00:57:46that did he want to stop fighting
00:57:48and then he answered
00:57:50my ribs are hurting, my ribs hurt.
00:57:53And he didn't say anything
00:57:54about the blood coming out of his mouth
00:57:56and then later on after the fight
00:57:57we never heard anything about the ribs.
00:57:59The ribs were healed instantaneously
00:58:01and no, there was nothing said about the ribs
00:58:04then they blamed it on the cut lip
00:58:06because that's more obvious.
00:58:08But no question in your mind
00:58:09that Julio quit.
00:58:10His corner didn't do it for him.
00:58:11Absolutely.
00:58:12And then in the interview
00:58:13that you and Larry conducted with him
00:58:15what was it that made him so angry?
00:58:17The fact that we asked him
00:58:19had he quit
00:58:20and that it really hurt him
00:58:22because the macho man that he is
00:58:23and a good thing to point out was
00:58:26that we also asked him
00:58:28that he made Roger Mayweather quit
00:58:30and he kind of agreed, yes
00:58:32but when we asked him that he quit
00:58:34he got annoyed.
00:58:35Using the same Spanish word.
00:58:37Absolutely.
00:58:38Rajarse is my translation for quit.
00:58:40It might not be perfect Spanish
00:58:42but everybody understands that
00:58:43and he understood that.
00:58:44Which only shows that two defeats
00:58:46at the hands of Oscar De La Hoya
00:58:47isn't going to change Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:58:49Thank you very much, Ray.
00:58:50George Foreman, as we look ahead to De La Hoya
00:58:53against the powerful Ike Corte
00:58:55on November 21,
00:58:56what did you see in this fight against Chavez
00:58:58which tells us something about how Oscar
00:59:00might perform in November?
00:59:01Yeah, Oscar De La Hoya we found out
00:59:03without that excellent left jab
00:59:05that he possessed
00:59:06he turns into an ordinary fighter.
00:59:08A slug fist.
00:59:09I mean, he gets caught with two
00:59:11he returns three.
00:59:12He's powerful
00:59:13but he's going to have to use that left jab.
00:59:15Without it, he's an ordinary fighter.
00:59:17But I do believe
00:59:17he's able to go back to the board
00:59:19keep that left hand out there
00:59:21and because of the speed of his hand
00:59:22he can pull it out.
00:59:23Interesting tactical challenge though
00:59:25for De La Hoya
00:59:25because Corte,
00:59:27according to virtually all observers
00:59:28has one of the best jabs
00:59:30if not the best
00:59:31and most powerful left jab
00:59:32for his weight in boxing.
00:59:34So you're saying that Oscar
00:59:35must somehow establish his own jab
00:59:37against the great jabber Corte.
00:59:39Yeah, because I don't believe
00:59:40there's no one in that weight division
00:59:41that has a better jab than Oscar De La Hoya.
00:59:44He steps in with it
00:59:45and it's like a stiff right hand
00:59:47when he catches you correctly.
00:59:48No one has a better one.
00:59:49Well, that'll be one fascinating angle
00:59:51to watch on November 21.
00:59:52Thank you very much, George.
00:59:54Larry Merchant rejoins us
00:59:55and Larry, first
00:59:56before we move to De La Hoya Corte
00:59:58your comment on Chavez's
01:00:01retirement from this fight
01:00:02the defeat at the hands of De La Hoya
01:00:04and what it all means
01:00:05to our continuing view
01:00:06of Julio Cesar Chavez
01:00:07as a man and a fighter.
01:00:10I think that the fans
01:00:12who love him
01:00:14will continue to love him.
01:00:16They'll remember his great fight
01:00:18against Edwin Rosario
01:00:19to win a lightweight title
01:00:20and later his gallant
01:00:23and dramatic comeback
01:00:24over Meldrick Taylor.
01:00:26But Ernest Hemingway
01:00:27once said that
01:00:29when you fall in love
01:00:31with a fighter
01:00:31you're setting yourself up
01:00:33because at the end
01:00:34of the day
01:00:35he's going to break your heart.
01:00:37And I think for an old warrior
01:00:38like him
01:00:39to quit on his stool
01:00:40the way he did
01:00:41he certainly broke
01:00:43a few hearts.
01:00:44Well, a lot of people
01:00:44are in love with Oscar De La Hoya
01:00:46and now he gets ready
01:00:47for what is by all accounts
01:00:49the toughest fight
01:00:50of his career.
01:00:51I certainly think so.
01:00:52What do you think?
01:00:54I think he fought
01:00:55a terrific fight
01:00:56against Chavez
01:00:57because a really good fighter
01:01:00senses what he can do
01:01:02and sometimes
01:01:03it may not be his game plan
01:01:05but that he knew
01:01:06he could take on
01:01:07the older fighter
01:01:08and beat him
01:01:09at his own game.
01:01:11He said he would stop him.
01:01:12He stopped him.
01:01:14It's a perfect fight
01:01:15as far as I'm concerned
01:01:16when he does that.
01:01:18He'll have to adapt
01:01:19once he's a party.
01:01:20The only thing I'll say
01:01:21about that fight right now
01:01:23is this is the first time
01:01:25that he has fought
01:01:26a fighter
01:01:27in which most people
01:01:30will not know
01:01:32in their own hearts
01:01:33or heads
01:01:33or believe
01:01:35that Oscar De La Hoya
01:01:36will absolutely win the fight.
01:01:39This is a very dangerous fight
01:01:40for him
01:01:41would not be a shock at all
01:01:43if he was defeated.
01:01:44Indeed.
01:01:45Well, we'll turn our attention
01:01:46to that one
01:01:47on November 21.
01:01:47We'll have a final word
01:01:48on what happened
01:01:49here at the Vegas Hilton
01:01:50a little later.
01:01:51Let's look ahead
01:01:51to some upcoming
01:01:52later this month.
01:01:53Check out the entertaining
01:01:54Prince Nassim Hamed.
