00:50Don't miss it.
00:51And stay right where you are now
00:53because our main event is next here in Tacoma, Washington.
00:59Ibo Elder has done nothing but win since he's turned pro,
01:03and the undefeated southpaw will now step up to the plate
01:06to face Dagoberto Nahira,
01:09who's coming off a one-punch knockout victory
01:11in his last start two months ago.
01:13Steve, both of these fighters have limitations
01:16as well as possibilities.
01:18Nahira could use a couple of more inches
01:20in both height and reach.
01:22Elder, on the other hand, wins on conditioning and guts
01:25rather than any one spectacular quality.
01:27In your opinion, what does each guy have to do
01:29to come away from this ring now with a win?
01:32Nahira has to play for a knockout.
01:35The chance of him winning on points is very slim.
01:37Elder is a busier fighter, a more polished boxer.
01:41Nahira, although, has a good right-hand-left hook combination,
01:44a combination that should work well against the southpaw.
01:47Nahira has only fought one southpaw before.
01:49Elder, he just has to be himself.
01:51He's a very skilled technician.
01:53He'll probably be the busier fighter,
01:54which will give him a huge edge in most of the rounds.
01:57Okay, as we will look up to the ring right now in the corner,
02:01they are up there, the fighters getting ready.
02:03There's the 20-year-old Nahira.
02:04He's won 14 of 16 bouts, only 5 by KO.
02:08He had a brief 15-fight amateur career
02:11and has been a pro since he was in high school.
02:13He's currently riding a 5-bout winning streak.
02:16Steve, take us behind the numbers of Dagoberto Nahira.
02:22Nahira, limited experience.
02:24He's 14 and 2, 16 fights,
02:27but he turned for a while a junior in high school.
02:30He's engaged in only 15 amateur fights,
02:32which instantly puts him at a disadvantage
02:34against a seasoned prospect as Ibo Elder.
02:37Questionable chin.
02:37Nahira has been down four times as a pro,
02:40but he's never been stopped.
02:41And surprising power.
02:42Usually I'd be telling you that a fighter with only 5 KOs
02:45in 14 wins isn't a knockout threat.
02:48But Nahira has surprising power,
02:50especially with his leaping left hook.
02:52As for Ibo Elder,
02:54oh, as we look at Nahira, there's Elder.
02:57They call him the extreme machine
02:58because of his high-intensity work rate in the ring.
03:01Elder has had a strong amateur career
03:03compared to his opponents.
03:05He has title aspirations,
03:07and he's undefeated so far.
03:08Steve, take us behind Ibo Elder.
03:11Ibo Elder's been perfect as a pro.
03:13As you see, 15-0, 10 knockouts.
03:15Amateur background.
03:17He's just as impressive as his pro record.
03:19He's 125-12 as an amateur.
03:21He was ranked second in the USA at light welterweight,
03:24but simply couldn't beat the top-rated fighter,
03:26Olympian Ricardo Williams,
03:28against whom Elder went 0-6.
03:30As far as activity,
03:31this will be Elder's ninth fight this year,
03:34during which he's advanced from a six-round fighter
03:36to a 12-round fighter.
03:37He's already been 10 rounds or more twice,
03:39and stamina seems to be a strength.
03:41Careful matchmaking.
03:43Until recently,
03:43Elder has been facing opponents with losing records.
03:46He's faced only one tough test,
03:48Emmanuel Clotty,
03:49and Elder did win comfort.
03:50So those are some of the keys to watch for
03:52as Ibo Elder puts his undefeated record on the line now
03:55against Dagoberto Nahira.

05:30he is now fighting out of Bell, California,
05:32and his record consists of 14 wins,
05:35two losses,
05:36with five wins coming by way of knockout.
05:40Ladies and gentlemen,
05:40please welcome
05:42Dagoberto El Carnillo Najera.
05:48And his opponent fighting out of the red corner,
05:51he's wearing brown trunks with silver trim
05:54and weighed in at 139 and three-fourths pounds.
05:58Coming to us from Atlanta, Georgia,
06:00he is undefeated with 15 wins,
06:03no losses,
06:04and 10 wins coming by way of knockout.
06:07Ladies and gentlemen,
06:08introducing the extreme machine,
06:11Abo Elder.
06:16Once again,
06:17your referee in charge,
06:18Ron Rawl.
06:19Now to give the instructions.
06:22Gentlemen.
06:24Take it out.
06:24Okay.
06:25Okay, I'll give you instructions in the locker room.
06:28This is a title fight.
06:29I want good boxing.
06:31I want championship boxing.
06:33Okay?
06:33Is there anything to add in any of the corners?
06:35Red corner, blue corner?
06:36You want to ask any questions now?
06:38Everything's okay?
06:39We're going to have a...
06:39Okay, let's go to work, gentlemen.
06:41Let's do the champion.
06:42Good luck.
06:43Good luck.
06:48Steve, tail of the tape.
06:50Very little to choose from in the tail of the tape.
06:53The key, Elder, is a southpaw.
06:57And Najera has only fought one southpaw so far.
07:00They're actually reversed as we look at it on the screen.
07:02Elder is on your right.
07:04Najera is on the left.
07:05As we look at rules, same as the last bout,
07:08we hope everybody here in Washington abides by everything.
07:11You wanted to make a point, Steve?
07:12Yeah, new fighters in the ring.
07:14The bad news, same ringside position.
07:17Well, we'll see if they are a little cautious about pulling the trigger.
07:21It is a fine line.
07:22You want to medically be here to protect fighters
07:24so they can live to fight another day.
07:26But they obviously had a good trigger there.
07:29As we see Ibo Elder, the southpaw, coming straight forward.
07:36Najera is in the red, willing to take some shots and now try to counter.
07:41Not much of a jab from Najera in the fights we've seen him, Steve.
07:44And there he is opening with a right hand, a couple of salvos that are wild and wide.
07:51Yeah, the big difference technically between these fighters is that Ibo throws pretty straight punches.
07:58And Najera throws pretty wide punches, advantage Elder.
08:01Both guys talked about going to the body, Steve,
08:04and one of the reasons take the legs away late.
08:06And I think that Najera is prepared to go 12 in this one,
08:10saying if I could soften him up to the body there, I could take his legs away,
08:14which is a common strategy.
08:16In practice, the series is wonderful, but you don't see it much in practice, do you?
08:29Now we see Najera trying to smoke that jab in.
08:33Put it work.
08:35Ibo Elder, of Noonan, Georgia, is in the gray and silver trunks.
08:43Dagoberto Najera is in yellow and gold.
08:47Yellow and red.
08:49Dagoberto Najera moving to his left, a good idea against the southpaw.
08:52You're moving away from his power punch,
08:54but Ibo Elder has a pretty good right hand for the southpaw.
08:57His hero is Marvin Hagler, and Hagler, of course, was the rarity among southpaw.
09:01The southpaw, whose right hand was as strong as his left.
09:05Steve, Elder trying to go up the middle there,
09:07because they feel that Najera is wide with his punches,
09:12and I think they're right.
09:16Now Najera trying to throw the jab anyway, at least show it to Elder.
09:20There's a counter, and he goes down in the exchange there.
09:23Najera had tagged Elder there.
09:26Five, six.
09:28At least no doctors are rushing the ring.
09:30Exactly what we said.
09:31Elder punched inside of Najera's wide shot.
09:34Here we go to work.
09:36Elder has a red mark above his nose near his right eye socket.
09:40Now he's going to finish off his man.
09:44Najera said he would lay in the woods here early,
09:46and that was part of the strategy,
09:47and then come on a bit later.
09:49He may not have a chance here if Elder could finish him off
09:52with still 30 seconds to go in round one.
09:56What about patience coming into play now, Steve?
09:59What do you do?
09:59Let it go.
10:00Elder should go for it.
10:02His strength is hand speed, not power,
10:04but if you have your man hurt, let the punches fly.
10:07He's very fast.
10:08He's working down and up, which is good.
10:11He's holding and hitting there.
10:13Or being held and hitting.
10:14Here we go.
10:15Go to work.
10:17How hurt is Najera?
10:20Why do you tell him if he backs up to begin with?
10:22The bell's up.
10:23Now he comes forward as they close out round one.
10:26A vigorous one here in Tacoma, Washington,
10:29at the Emerald Queen Casino.
10:30Let's listen in to the corners.
10:55He doesn't let him get it.
10:56He doesn't let him get it.
11:02You see, left to the body,
11:06and it was more of a left hook
11:07than it really was a straight left.
11:10Najera landed himself, though, twice before going down.
11:13Yeah, Najera landed a big hook as Elder landed the left,
11:16but Najera's backing up,
11:17and that's not going to work against Elder.
11:19Yeah, you've got to have something on it,
11:21and you've got to dig in and get some leverage,
11:22and you're right, Steve.
11:24Najera didn't have it there,
11:25but he survives as we go to the second heath here.
11:29And the pace continues.
11:31And we'll see as Elder continues to stop.
11:37So that's been the early texture of this fight,
11:39but now we see Najera with the jab.
11:41He's shooting it,
11:43which will make Elder think about it, at least, Steve.
11:46The ironic part of the knockdown is,
11:48to me, that's exactly the scenario
11:50that gives Najera a chance to win the fight.
11:52Najera is a short fighter with a short reach,
11:54tends to jump in.
11:55The guy's attacking, going for a knockout.
11:58That'll give Najera the range
11:59to land some of his own shots,
12:01and he did land that big left hook.
12:02The only difference is...
12:04All right, he'll flip what he says, Steve.
12:07One, two, three, four, five.
12:10Elder taking the eight count here,
12:11but what he did is,
12:13he moved straight out with his chin up, Steve.
12:16Are you all right?
12:16And as he was moving out, he got flipped.
12:19His legs looked terrible when he first got up.
12:21Let's see how badly hurt he is.
12:22His eyes are wide open.
12:23He looks like he's going to fight with renewed intensity,
12:25but it could be panicked.
12:26Let's see.
12:26What is Najera doing backing up?
12:29First minutes and down in this fight,
12:30and we're still just four minutes in.
12:35I told you, Najera has sneaky power.
12:38I don't know why he doesn't have more knockouts on his record.
12:40Evo Elder down for the first time in his career
12:42as he continues to be the aggressor,
12:45shooting that left of the body.
12:46So it looks like he's got his composure back.
12:49Well, this is what the learning process is all about
12:52for fighters like Elder.
12:53So let's see how he responds.
12:54You know, you knock out guys in three, two, one rounds.
12:57It doesn't tell you anything about the fighters.
12:59It's how you respond to the fighters.
13:00And it takes a few fights to find out.
13:04Nagaburto, Nagaburto Nahera admits it's very difficult to fight a left-hander,
13:07but he has it going his way against, Steve,
13:09as you mentioned, going to his left,
13:10which is sound strategy against Evo Elder.
13:16Elder shoots that right in again.
13:19It's a very straight, crisp shot.
13:21It lands, and there's an overhand right by Elder that also connects.
13:25Now, how are we going southpaw?
13:27I'm not sure why.
13:29As they win shots here, Elder just lands and tries to go low to the body.
13:3945 seconds to go here in round two.
13:42And there's the left-handed stance against Evo,
13:45which isn't confusing anybody.
13:47Elder with a right front with a cross.
13:50And Elder's a natural.
13:51He's ambidextrous,
13:53so he's saying his right hand often surprises a lot of right-handed fighters
13:57who don't expect the power to be coming from that side.
14:03Elder bangs a combination there to the head of Nahera.
14:08Good recovery by Evo,
14:10but Nahera not showing any aggressiveness after putting Elder on ground.
14:14He swelled his leg rubbery after that knockdown.
14:18Nahera avoiding shots there.
14:21As we've come to the end of round two.
14:24Good job.
14:30Good round, boy.
14:31Good round.
14:32Let me just look at your eyes.
14:33Now you're fine.
14:34Good job.
14:35How do you feel, son?
14:37Fine.
14:37You okay?
14:38Was that just a flash knock now?
14:40Yeah.
14:40Okay, rest.
14:41Yeah, but it was like...
14:42Big air.
14:43Big air.
14:44What did he hit you with?
14:44I didn't even see it.
14:45It was on the other side.
14:48What was that?
14:49Okay.
14:54Another ring card girl hit the decks.
14:56That's what we just heard.
14:57But more importantly, here's the knockdown, Steve.
15:01That was a really wide left hook.
15:03And Elder is so aggressive and walking toward Nahera,
15:08Nahera's actually suckering him in.
15:11That's not a shot a fighter with Evo Elder's experience should get hit with.
15:15He was wide open.
15:16Got caught in no man's land again with his chin up now.
15:21He shakes it off.
15:22His father, Greg, passed him, didn't even see the shot, but you just saw it there at home.
15:27Okay, let's go to work.
15:28Elder first went off the stool.
15:30He's in the...
15:32Call of brown punks with the silver...
15:37And in red and gold is Nahera, who's against the ropes now.
15:41That was a loose rope, Nick.
15:42You pointed that out yesterday.
15:44I thought they were going to tighten them up, but they're like training ropes.
15:47They really are like a gym rather than an arena.
15:53Nahera, as they're in the center of the ring.
15:56The left-hander is Evo Elder, unbeaten, but down in this fight for the first time in his career.
16:03Left hand there by Elder.
16:07Not throwing the jab with enough conviction, though,
16:10as Nahera bangs back, connecting with a sweeping right hand.
16:14Now Nahera has his jab working.
16:16His hands are nice and tight.
16:18Keep it in front.
16:19Elbows in.
16:22Elder's sort of waiting for him to go wide with those shots again.
16:25Bring it up, bring it up, okay?
16:26Bring it up.
16:27Here we go.
16:27You're all right.
16:28Low left hand by Elder.
16:30He's doing one thing this round that showed me he's adaptable.
16:33That's one.
16:33When he lands a good shot, as he did with that left hand earlier,
16:36he's not rushing in.
16:37He backs off.
16:37Land, let the judges see you land at a clean shot.
16:40Back off.
16:40Makes sense.
16:41Yeah, he won't get in trouble that way.
16:44Elder smokes the jab there.
16:46He's the left-hander.
16:50More cautious, looking very focused.
16:53Knowing, as you pointed out, Steve, behind the numbers,
16:56that Nahera is deceptively hollow.
16:59I don't know how this guy only has the four KOs,
17:04five KOs and 14 wins.
17:07Nahera in his own corner now is trapped and trying to foul
17:10and get out of danger, but takes a big right hand
17:13and trying to fight off the ropes as he does.
17:16Discourage Elder, and now they're back in the middle of the ring,
17:19and here comes the flurry from Nahera
17:20as he becomes the aggressor.
17:24That time, Nahera didn't get lucky like he did the first time
17:26when they were trading.
17:27He got angry, though.
17:29He landed about nine shots,
17:31and Nahera came back with about two.
17:51Nahera with a right to the body.
17:55Not much, uh...
17:58How many lead right-hands do Nahera puncher
18:00you usually like to use against the southpaw?
18:03Pretty much waiting, and then...
18:04You tried it there, Steve, just as you mentioned it.
18:09Ducks under an elder shot there.
18:12And lead right against the southpaw,
18:14the shot I think is most effective.
18:15You usually don't land too many jabs against southpaw.
18:18Especially if you don't throw a low-up,
18:20and just snap a little short run.
18:21And I think Nahera's hands are in that position.
18:23Look at his right hand.
18:24Way back.
18:25But you're right.
18:26You've got to fire it to pick up a point
18:28and win a round.
18:30So, they close out.
18:32Round three.
18:33And the pace has been fairly hot here.
18:36How do you feel?
18:37You're right?
18:39He comes right by you.
18:42Straight, straight.
18:43He has to catch you and turn the ball to the ball.
18:45Take the ball.
18:47Take the ball.
18:48Take the ball.
18:57You're right.
18:58You're right.
19:00You're right, then.
19:02You're right.
19:04You're right.
19:05You're right.
19:05been mixing his attack very nicely upstairs and down that time he slipped
19:10a punch and in ducking when he came back up the glove was not at the correct
19:15level
19:19and here we see this fairly smothering attack from elder well that's you notice
19:24at the end of that flurry he stepped back back down yeah which was that which is
19:27dangerous but it's better than standing in there and letting nahara land a big
19:30shot well as our interpreter over brooks picked up in nahara's corner his corner
19:35telling him the ebo elder is moving straight back and there are no angles
19:40there it's straight up and back and greg elder the trainer of the ebo and his
19:45father said that they're gonna worry they've got to work on that he's got to
19:48sharpen all his tools and one of them is not to be that predictable and
19:51certainly angles should come into play
20:00just turned his back and walked away knowing that his man is in serious hurt
20:06eight
20:06okay you all right is that good all right okay you all right
20:10and nahara are looking continually an elder there and not the referee Ron Hall
20:14figuring what's next maybe trying to read how much confidence he's a pound of hand as well
20:19he's soaking up shot here and a terrible pounding as he battles back nahara
20:29and the fighters in a display of sports that should stop fighting don't give him what's going on
20:35nick tonight in his car i'm glad we're sitting down or we think the next one's going down
20:38round card girls fighters doctors rushing the rig meanwhile
20:42ebo is on the in the process of maybe finishing this fight
20:47well i gotta give nahara credit here for coming back from what looked like a real pounding against the road
20:53steve
20:54he's like this thing was dangerous he got off a couple of big shots i don't know if they landed
20:58i don't think they did but he's
21:01he has gotten off on the canvas before and won but he has been down as you pointed out steve
21:06several times nahara has
21:16there trying a combination trying to close the show and nahara much more square than elder giving more of a
21:24target than elder is i give elder credit for continuing to try to work the body and mix it up
21:29as you said not just headhunt and try to pour it out that way
21:33here he comes stalking his man
21:40elder in effect uh erased that knockdown that he suffered in round two
21:44he's in total control now elder's not up on his toes on the outside with a hard jab he's not
21:50that kind of fighter so he's got to be aggressive there and his
21:52aggressiveness netted him that put that knockdown and perhaps a 10-8 round speed oh no doubt
21:58yeah
22:02okay watch it break break
22:04heads off heads off here we go keep them right now keep them right
22:13keep them right
22:13oh elder with a crisp left hand counter there
22:17again nahara square that's why you're getting hit on the tender that straight left
22:20oh god
22:21he falls between those loose ropes
22:24look at those ropes wiggles
22:27here we go let's go to work
22:28much better in just about any gym in the country
22:30and the referee could have called that a knockdown because if the ropes keep you up
22:34that's that can be ruled a knockdown
22:36well the referee has to call a knockdown on himself too as we saw and nobody even touched him
22:51on the line
23:07let's go
23:095
23:10hold on
23:10Two left hands.
23:14Wow, that's beautiful.
23:15That's a beautiful straight punch.
23:17That's the beauty of straight punches.
23:18And the jab started it.
23:20It looked like, you know, when he's got the jab going,
23:22his opponent can't punch back.
23:24And at the end of the round,
23:28that's a knockdown.
23:29I'm sorry.
23:29That should have been ruled a knockdown.
23:31He went down the rope and kept him up.
23:33Okay, let's go to work.
23:34Let's go.
23:35As we go to round five here,
23:38140-pound junior welterweight Zagaburto Najero
23:42has been down unofficially twice.
23:46And really three times.
23:47Rucker's been down once,
23:47and Elder's been down once.
23:49And the ring card girl,
23:50so we're the only one still sitting.
23:52Ring card girl did her number last round
23:54without shoes on.
23:55The shoes, I'm telling you.
23:58Ebo Elder working with conviction now.
24:01Good job, good job.
24:02Najero still fairly full of fight here.
24:06His jab has lost some of the steam
24:08as he gets rocked there.
24:10And Najero looks like he was in trouble
24:13but spins off the ropes.
24:16I thought Elder caught him with a low blow there
24:18as he tried to chase him down,
24:19but Ron Hall didn't catch it.
24:24Elder hands held high,
24:26trying to miss for the openings,
24:27doubles the jab,
24:28and then smashes Najero with that left hand.
24:33And Elder really isn't missing
24:35any of his straight lefts.
24:36And there's that left of the body there, too.
24:38Up and down both.
24:39He's not missing that straight left
24:40because he's leading with his jab.
24:42There's a right lead by Najero
24:44as he continues to fight back.
24:47Fifth round here,
24:48scheduled for 12.
24:50Ebo Elder is the southpaw.
24:57A couple of shots,
24:58those wide, patented punches,
25:00and Elder said he would make it pay
25:01by going up the middle
25:02with crisp and efficient counters
25:04in that case.
25:09In case anybody's wonders,
25:11Ebo,
25:11which is a sort of a weird name
25:13for a fighter,
25:14or for anybody,
25:15short for Eben.
25:16Eben is short for Abeniza.
25:18So let's clear that up right now.
25:19And it's a difficult connotation there.
25:23Steve,
25:26how tired does he look?
25:27How much did that round take out?
25:30That round of knockdowns took a lot out,
25:32and the body punches took a lot out.
25:33Elder is not just,
25:34he's landing shots right up the gut,
25:36right into the midsection.
25:38That will sap you of your strength.
25:40Najero's only chance right now
25:41is to counterpunch.
25:42He's not going to land any of his leads
25:43because Elder sees him coming.
25:44They're so wide.
25:47So that's where Najero
25:48is making mistakes
25:49or not enough of his,
25:50nothing behind the jab
25:52and telegraphic shots.
25:54He's not really
25:54making any concession
25:56to the fact that Elder
25:57is a southpaw.
25:58No right-hand lead,
26:00and he hasn't learned
26:01to flip the left-hand.
26:03Oh, a turning left hand there,
26:05I thought, by Elder.
26:07That got Najero's attention.
26:1120 seconds to go in the round.
26:14It's been all Elder again.
26:17Ahara wouldn't.
26:18Not much in return here
26:20as he's perhaps trying
26:22to get his legs back
26:23after that,
26:24suffering what officially
26:25were two knockdowns
26:26in that round,
26:27the previous round.
26:30And we close out round number five
26:34there in Tacoma, Washington.
26:39He's not in your league.
26:40He's tough.
26:41He's tough.
26:42He's in your league.
26:4414-2.
26:45He's fixing to be 14-3.
26:47Maybe the big spill coming up here,
26:49Steve, I don't know.
26:50The only thing you've got to worry about
26:51is getting over on his left side
26:53where his right hand is
26:55and letting him throw
26:56one of them right hands on you.
26:57Those are some serious shoes.
26:58Staying right out of the range.
26:59I think.
27:00Beautiful boxing.
27:01That was only 4-2.
27:02You're putting on a clinch.
27:03You know that.
27:05That hasn't been a factor at all.
27:07You're really boxing good.
27:09Boxing good.
27:10I'll tell you what, son.
27:12Who's going to give you
27:13a round of boxing?
27:14Who's going to do it, huh?
27:16I ain't seen nobody do it.
27:18And Ebo.
27:18Big air.
27:19Leads with some left.
27:20You and John are jazz.
27:21Yeah.
27:22Fight.
27:23Fight.
27:23Left hands to the chest.
27:24Not to the head.
27:25Not to the head.
27:26Greg Elder in the corner.
27:27The father and trainer
27:28of Ebo Elder
27:29tells his son and fighter
27:32nobody can outbox you.
27:34Certainly not this guy.
27:35And Steve, I would agree.
27:38Greg Elder is some cheerleader.
27:39Let me tell you.
27:40We talked to him yesterday.
27:40He is a piece of work.
27:43Yeah.
27:43Ebo said he was destined
27:45to be a fighter
27:46before he was born
27:47because his father said,
27:48I'm going to have a son
27:49who's a boxer.
27:50And he does now.
27:51An undefeated one
27:52as he told his son,
27:53Ebo Elder,
27:54to go just right up the gut
27:56and try to land to the chest
27:57right there in the body
27:58and take it out of
28:00Nagapurto Nahirak.
28:04What about Elder's leverage?
28:06Is that preventing him
28:07from being a real pale artist
28:09or is it the fact
28:09that some guys
28:10just don't have power
28:11and they're just not born in the ass?
28:12I don't think his leverage is bad.
28:15Most importantly,
28:15he throws that left hand straight.
28:21I don't think he's going to ever
28:22be the biggest puncher
28:23in the world,
28:23but this is a hard fight to judge
28:26because as we've seen
28:27in the takes of Nahirak,
28:28he's been down before
28:29several times.
28:30And there goes that hand speed
28:32into play
28:32and you've got to like that
28:33about Elder.
28:34Very crisp shots.
28:35He is not wasting punches
28:37or action.
28:39Straight up the middle,
28:41economy of motion,
28:42picking his shots,
28:44definitely setting the tone here.
28:49Nahirak soaks up
28:51a combination there
28:52from Elder.
28:53Elder again measuring his man
28:55and not getting wild, Steve.
29:00It is a boxing lesson,
29:02isn't it?
29:02It is.
29:03It's funny,
29:04but I reiterate the point
29:05that Nahirak's only shot to win
29:07is going to be
29:08if Elder thinks he's hurt,
29:10comes in,
29:11starts throwing big shots,
29:13it'll give Nahirak a shot
29:14a chance,
29:15an opening at least,
29:16to land one of his big left hooks.
29:18Otherwise,
29:18he's just going to soak up
29:19these shots up and down
29:20and get worn out.
29:25Nahirak trying to come on there.
29:27He looks...
29:27Chase Elder.
29:28Yeah,
29:28Nahirak looks really
29:29hopeless and hopeless
29:30when he leads.
29:31I mean,
29:32Elder so easily eludes the shots.
29:35Elder,
29:36with his hand speed,
29:38wants to make the play.
29:39He's not going to
29:39give this guy a shot,
29:41as you say,
29:41to get back in this fight
29:43with a looping left
29:44or a lead right hand.
29:47He keeps punching.
29:48He continues to discourage
29:51Nahirak.
29:53Nahirak.
29:54Oh,
29:55bad butt.
29:55Bad butt.
29:56He is dripping blood.
29:57Blood is just streaming
29:58on a canvas here
30:00in front of us.
30:00Give me a towel.
30:02Give me a towel.
30:02And you can see it
30:03as vividly as...
30:06Just at heart.
30:06...a painting.
30:07Right here.
30:08See right there.
30:09You know that's a butt, Nick,
30:10because you don't bleed
30:11like that from a punch.
30:12No,
30:12not from a punch.
30:13And there we see a gash.
30:14Okay,
30:14let the doc look at it.
30:16Okay,
30:16accidental head butt.
30:18Accidental head butt.
30:19And Ron Hall calls
30:20it an accidental head butt
30:22just to make it official
30:23with the Washington State
30:24Athletic Commission.
30:25What did you see?
30:25Did you see?
30:26Kyrie telling all the judges.
30:28Five rounds complete,
30:29they would go to the cards
30:30if they ruled
30:30that he cannot continue.
30:31And my guess is
30:32that's exactly
30:33what they'll rule.
30:34Let's see.
30:36See if they could stop it.
30:37Accidental head butt
30:38or an elbow.
30:42Accidental head butt.
30:43State Athletic Commission
30:44doctors trying to do
30:45just that right now,
30:46applying pressure
30:48with a towel
30:49and now the adrenaline.
30:58It's really a shame
30:59if it had to end this way
31:00because...
31:02Should the doctor
31:03be applying adrenaline
31:04to the cut?
31:05Seems like a little odd.
31:06It's not his job
31:07to stop the cut.
31:08And Ebo here.
31:10He's talked about that gash
31:12in his right eye
31:13from the nose
31:15and the socket there
31:16but that looks like
31:17it's hard to tell
31:17where the blood
31:18is streaming from.
31:20Ebo's cut is from the butt
31:22as well.
31:22No one's paying attention
31:23to him.
31:26Come on over here.
31:29Still round six.
31:30Doctors conferring
31:31in the corner here.
31:32And a good point here.
31:34Elder was in a neutral corner.
31:36The referee has let him
31:37go to his own corner
31:39and be treated
31:40because it's not fair.
31:41I mean,
31:43if my hair is getting treated,
31:44why shouldn't Elder
31:45be treated for his cut as well?
31:57See if we can get a look
31:58at that gash
31:59is how severe it is.
32:09Steve,
32:09how long can this go on
32:10before the determination
32:11is made?
32:12They should make
32:13a determination now.
32:15You know,
32:15either the guy can continue
32:16or the blood's going
32:17into his eye
32:18and he can't.
32:19I mean,
32:19one or the other.
32:20Blood spilled out,
32:22poured out
32:22onto the canvas here.
32:23It's in front of us.
32:25It was substantial.
32:29There we look at the rule.
32:32So it will go
32:33to the scorecards,
32:34as you mentioned,
32:35Steve,
32:36if they choose
32:37to stop it.
32:38You see Manda Pallone
32:39helping Elder's cut.
32:42Marco Quinones,
32:43no,
32:44excuse me,
32:46Moda working on
32:47the Harris cut.
32:47The referee is asking
32:48how much is left
32:49in this round.
32:51What?
32:52How many?
32:54How many seconds left?
32:56No,
32:57yes,
32:57he wants to play.
32:59How many?
33:0033.
33:02All right,
33:02he's referee
33:03going over to
33:04Evo Elder's corner,
33:05taking a look
33:06at his cut.
33:08He has full authority
33:09to stop the fight.
33:10We got 33 seconds.
33:12Three seconds
33:12to go in the round.
33:13He wants them
33:14to continue.
33:15And he's ordering
33:16everybody out of the ring
33:18but the fighters.
33:22This was too long.
33:23This should not
33:23have taken this long.
33:25but one thing
33:25we can see
33:26that the gauze
33:29they were using
33:29to stop the blood
33:30didn't become
33:32stained with red
33:33immediately
33:33which would
33:34lead you to infer
33:35that it wasn't
33:36as serious a cut
33:37as we first imagined.
33:39At least as it looks,
33:39right?
33:39We got 33 seconds.
33:41Timer.
33:43Where does he go?
33:44Right to the head here.
33:45There's the jab
33:46by Elder.
33:47They said
33:49three seconds
33:49or 33 seconds.
33:51Yeah, it was 33, right.
33:52You know what?
33:53How much time
33:53left in the round
33:54is totally insignificant.
33:56If a guy's hurt,
33:58you don't know why
33:58he asked that question.
33:59Why should the amount
34:00of time
34:00if he can continue,
34:01he can continue.
34:02If he can't,
34:03he can't.
34:03If it's one second
34:03or a hundred seconds.
34:04Nahara trying to
34:05discourage Elder
34:06as he's rocked again
34:08against the vaults.
34:11When he get out
34:12of this round six.
34:13Okay, here we go.
34:15And there's the blood again.
34:17There's the blood again.
34:19It doesn't look good.
34:20Let's watch.
34:21Let's listen.
34:28Come on.
34:31Come on.
34:32Come on.
34:51This is what caused
34:52all the problems.
34:55Wide shot.
34:58And there it is.
34:59It was that follow-up
35:00when Nahara came up
35:01with his head.
35:04That was,
35:05I tell you,
35:05I don't know
35:07when the last time
35:08I saw two guys
35:09get that badly cut
35:10from one bust.
35:10And they never
35:11assessed fault,
35:12of course,
35:12but it certainly
35:13wasn't Ibo Elder
35:14who initiated it.
35:15It was Nahara.
35:16You're right, Nick.
35:17No doubt.
35:18Now the bell rings.
35:19How long are they
35:20going to give Nahara
35:20this time?
35:21This could be
35:22getting out of hand
35:22as we see.
35:23The referee
35:24is ready to call off
35:25the books like.
35:28Talking to Elder's corner.
35:30A lot of indecision
35:31here by the referee.
35:32Ibo Elder's dad
35:33is in the corner
35:34right now
35:35and getting into
35:36the ring
35:37which would be
35:37an indication
35:38that this fight
35:39would be done.
35:39When the stop
35:40is in the cup
35:41I'm going to
35:42get a minute.
35:43That's it.
35:44We're going to
35:45scorecards now.
35:49We're going to
35:50scorecards.
35:51We're going to
35:51scorecards.
35:56This looks like
35:57it's getting out
35:57of hand, Steve.
35:58I agree.
35:59A lot of indecision.
36:00an accidental cut.
36:01Why should he get
36:03more than a minute
36:03in between rounds?
36:04While the referee
36:05talking to the
36:06commissioner.
36:07Talking to the
36:08judges.
36:10We can stop this fight
36:11because it's an
36:12accidental cut.
36:13Even in the next round
36:14we can stop this fight
36:15because it was prior
36:17to this round here.
36:18Oh, we're fine.
36:19We're in the sixth round
36:20anyway.
36:21Okay.
36:22Yeah, I know that
36:23but I'm just saying
36:23because of the idea
36:24that he can't continue.
36:27But he can't continue.
36:28He can't continue.
36:31No, he can't continue.
36:33So we go to the scorecards.
36:39Referee is talking
36:39to the state athletic
36:40commissioner saying
36:41we can stop this fight.
36:44We can't stop this fight
36:45because it happened
36:46in the last round
36:47or it's...
36:49I don't know
36:49what that has to do
36:50with anything
36:50but there are about
36:5125 people in the ring
36:52now so I guess
36:53the fight's over.
36:54And the gloves are coming
36:54off and Nahara
36:55is a vanquished warrior
36:57here as blood drips down
36:58and there's Ibo Elder
36:59as we look at him.
37:00As he runs his record
37:02to 16 and 0.
37:04Looks like the blood
37:05has stopped right now
37:07as we look at Nahara.
37:08It's a nasty gas, Steve.
37:11But he has stopped bleeding
37:13as they pull his gloves off.
37:16And this one is over
37:19but not without controversy
37:21again, Steve.
37:23Hasn't been a great day
37:24for the commission.
37:26Yeah, well, hey,
37:26I know you don't get in here.
37:29It's a fabulous performance.
37:31Fabulous performance.
37:32I'm telling you what.
37:33I'm looking at Nahara
37:34right in front of me
37:35and it is a deep gash
37:37but he's...
37:40It has stopped bleeding.
37:41There's an indent
37:42on the top of his forehead
37:43from the severity of the butt.
37:46It's pretty apparent
37:47another shot or two
37:49would open it up.
37:51He got through most...
37:52Yeah, he got through
37:53most of the rest of that round
37:54and then at the very end
37:55he started bleeding
37:56just as badly
37:56as he had been.
37:57Ron Hall has had
37:58a difficult day
38:00at the office, Steve.
38:01The referee.
38:05He came into the belt
38:07about us, about us.
38:12Score cards or did this guy's out?
38:15Steve, it was havoc
38:16out here tonight
38:17in Tacoma, Washington
38:18from start to finish
38:20it seems.
38:21Okay, okay.
38:22Everybody falling down.
38:27And that's what fans
38:28come to see.
38:29Each guy down
38:30early in this fight
38:31elder for the first time
38:32in his career.
38:34These are spectacular
38:36knockdowns.
38:36I mean,
38:36then as the referee
38:37goes down
38:41that of course
38:42should have been
38:43the third knockdown.
38:49And I guess
38:50the referee
38:50didn't see the butt
38:51right away
38:52but there was no
38:53missing it once
38:54Naharok came out
38:55of that.
38:56You can't fault
38:56Hall, the referee,
38:57on that one.
39:00Okay.
39:01We are ready
39:02for the official
39:03decision
39:04in what was a
39:06far from routine
39:09night in the ring.
39:10Let's go upstairs.
39:14Ladies and gentlemen,
39:15after six completed
39:16rounds of boxing,
39:18the blue corner
39:19is unable to continue
39:21as a result of a
39:22severe laceration.
39:24Therefore,
39:25your winner
39:26by technical
39:26knockout
39:27and the new
39:28WBO
39:29Intercontinental
39:30Super Lightweight Champion,
39:32the extreme machine,
39:34Abel Elder.
39:39I don't understand
39:40why that's a TKO,
39:42not a technical decision.
39:43I don't understand
39:44why they didn't
39:44go to the cards.
39:45The fight was stopped
39:46because of bleeding.
39:47The cut was opened
39:48by his butt.
39:49It was ruled by the referee
39:50to be an unintentional butt.
39:51They should have gone
39:52to the scorecard.
39:53Washington State
39:54Athletic Commission
39:55rules take precedence
39:56over any unified rules
39:57of commissions.
39:58Well, this was
39:59for a minor title.
40:00I assume we were
40:01using the ABC rules,
40:03the unified rules.
40:05After four rounds,
40:06they go to the cards
40:06if the fight gets
40:07stopped by a butt.
40:08They didn't go to the cards.
40:09I'm confused by that.
40:11I am too,
40:12Steve Farhood.
40:13Evo Elder is not,
40:14though.
40:15He comes away
40:16with a victory.
40:19Good win.
40:20Runs the record
40:20to 16-0
40:21and looked impressive
40:22doing it.
40:22He did everything
40:23I thought he had to do,
40:25and we'll talk about
40:25that a little bit later
40:26as we look at
40:27the aftermath
40:27in the ring.
40:29And a lot of people
40:30look upset.
40:35Tony Page,
40:36our third member
40:36of the broadcast team,
40:38is in the ring
40:39to shed some light
40:41on this situation.
40:43Tony.
40:43Thanks very much, Nick.
40:44I'm here with
40:44the commission head,
40:45Mary Jovic.
40:46I talked to the referee.
40:47He told me,
40:48the doctor told him,
40:49the cut was okay
40:50to continue
40:51when it was cut
40:51the first time.
40:52Is that correct?
40:53I don't know that.
40:54Okay.
40:54Secondly, he said
40:55it was too deep
40:57after that
40:57when the bell rang,
40:58and that's why
40:59they went to the scorecard.
41:00The cut is too deep
41:01for him to continue.
41:02That's why they called that.
41:04You think we might
41:04be able to talk
41:05to the referee
41:06because he told me
41:07that that's what they said.
41:08It was too deep.
41:08They couldn't continue.
41:09I would have to check on that.
41:11Will you try
41:11and get him for us?
41:12I would try
41:12to do that
41:12in a few minutes.
41:13Okay.
41:13Let's try and get,
41:14we'll go back to Nick
41:15so we can get Ibo Elder.
41:19Ibo.
41:22About 10 seconds.
41:35I'm here with Ibo Elder.
41:37It's one of the strangest fights
41:38I ever saw would happen.
41:39Did you stick to your game plan
41:40first of all?
41:41Fairly well.
41:42We wanted to box
41:43and use our skills.
41:45Every now and then
41:45I'd get a little bit
41:46too much into the war of it
41:48and I'd stay in the pocket
41:49a little too long,
41:50but it turned out great,
41:51so we're happy.
41:52Now you got cut
41:53under the right eye.
41:53Is that from a butt?
41:56There was a punch
41:58and the butt were right
42:00two seconds apart
42:01from each other.
42:02I don't know.
42:03I couldn't,
42:03I can't really feel it,
42:04so I don't know.
42:05You know,
42:05the only time I know
42:06I'm cut is if I'm bleeding.
42:08It may have been a punch.
42:08It was a good hook
42:09he caught me with,
42:10but it may have been
42:11a headbutt as well.
42:12I couldn't tell.
42:12Did you agree
42:13with the way the referee
42:14went about his business tonight?
42:15Well, you know,
42:16I love the fight
42:17and it would have been great
42:18if they would have let
42:18the fight keep going,
42:19but he's got a job to do
42:20and I trust him to do that
42:21better than I can.
42:23So, I respect his decision.
42:25You talk about boxing
42:26a lot tonight.
42:26It seemed like you slugged
42:27a little more
42:28than you wanted to.
42:28Are you happy
42:29with your performance?
42:30I did slug a little more
42:31than I wanted to,
42:32but that can be easily
42:33remedied,
42:33so we're okay.
42:34And when you got dropped?
42:36Good hook.
42:37Nice punch.
42:38No big deal.
42:39This is boxing.
42:40Hey, can I thank
42:41a few people?
42:41Real quick.
42:42I want to thank
42:43Mike Daryl in Savannah.
42:44Yes, Mike.
42:44Tony Evans in Macon,
42:45my cousin Chris in Athens
42:47and all my boys,
42:48my pastor Joe in Palmetto,
42:50I love to say hey
42:51to my daughter Maddie in Noonan
42:52and all my family
42:53and friends, thank you.
42:54He's right behind me.
42:54All right, thanks very much.
42:55Thank you, Frank Warren.
42:56We have Dagoberto
42:58Najera right here.
43:00Talk about what happened
43:01when you got headbutted.
43:03Well, I know that
43:04it was an accident,
43:05but I think this is
43:07not a good decision
43:08because the referee
43:09stopped the fight.
43:11We didn't stop the fight.
43:12We wanted to keep fighting,
43:13but the referee
43:14stopped the fight.
43:15I mean,
43:16this is a technical draw.
43:18It's not a decision
43:19for him to win.
43:20I mean,
43:21when the bird in the sixth round,
43:23and that's not a good decision
43:24that they did
43:27because the referee
43:28stopped the contest,
43:29and you're supposed to go to the,
43:31that's a technical knockout,
43:32I mean, draw.
43:33When you first got hit,
43:34but did you think,
43:35okay, we're going to the scorecards,
43:36or did you think you could continue?
43:37I mean,
43:38I wanted to continue
43:39right now, too,
43:41at the end of the sixth round,
43:42I wanted to continue, too,
43:43but, I mean,
43:44the referee said
43:45that he wasn't going to stop the fight,
43:47and that was going to be
43:49a technical draw.
43:51When you dropped Elder,
43:52and you started to back off,
43:54was he a hard puncher for you?
43:55Not really
43:56because, I mean,
43:56he didn't put me
43:57in a bad situation.
43:58I mean,
43:59I couldn't handle it.
44:00As you've seen,
44:01I mean,
44:01I wasn't hurt,
44:02and I got up
44:03and kept fighting,
44:04so, no,
44:05he's not a puncher.
44:08Would you want to fight him again?
44:09Exactly.
44:10I want a rematch
44:10because this is not,
44:11I mean,
44:11when the referee starts the fight,
44:13does it,
44:13automatically does a draw
44:15because it's before
44:16the sixth round.
44:17Not happy
44:18with what the referee did?
44:19exactly,
44:19no.
44:21Not happy at all.
44:22Okay.
44:23Let's go back down
44:24to ringside
44:24and Nick Charles.
44:25Okay,
44:25thank you,
44:26Tony Page.
44:26We should tell you
44:27that on all three scorecards,
44:29Evo Elder was ahead
44:3058-53,
44:32so the decision
44:33was announced wrong,
44:34Steve Barhood.
44:35It wasn't actually
44:36a technical draw
44:37by any means.
44:38They did go to the cards.
44:40They did the right thing.
44:41It was announced
44:41as a technical knockout
44:43win for Elder.
44:44In fact,
44:45had he not been ahead
44:45on points,
44:46he would not have won the fight.
44:47Well, once again,
44:48you heard Evo Elder
44:49assess his performance.
44:51How about you doing it,
44:52Steve?
44:52What did you see in there?
44:53I thought he looked pretty good.
44:55You know,
44:55he was against the fighter
44:56with a questionable chin.
44:58He took advantage of that.
44:58He scored two official knockdowns.
45:00Could have been called three.
45:01He got caught by that one shot
45:03because he was a little
45:04overaggressive,
45:04but I liked the way,
45:05from that point on,
45:07after he got knocked down,
45:07I liked the way
45:08he made a slight adjustment
45:10and when he landed single shots,
45:11he didn't go right in.
45:13He backed away
45:13so he couldn't be countered.
45:15That was smart.
45:15Split decisions in this game
45:17are you live and die by them,
45:19sometimes literally.
45:20The referee coming in,
45:21we saw the blood squirt down
45:23and really pour out of the cut.
45:25But again,
45:26Nahara's cut seemed to be closed
45:28as I looked at it
45:29and when Tony just interviewed him,
45:31it looked like he was
45:32certainly under control.
45:33Should he have kept fighting,
45:35been allowed to keep fighting?
45:36A fair question.
45:37I'm not surprised the cut was closed
45:38because they gave him
45:39about three minutes
45:40to close it after it happened
45:42and then they gave him
45:42over a minute
45:43to close it after that sixth round.
45:45So if they had made
45:47a decision right away,
45:48the chances are good
45:49they would have gone to the cards
45:50and they probably
45:51should have done that.
45:52If Elder had not won
45:53this fight on points,
45:54I think he would have
45:55had a good beef.
45:56Well, once again,
45:57when we talk about Ebo Elder,
45:59we talk to his father,
46:00we talk to him,
46:01they're talking about
46:01a title fight.
46:02The objective is
46:04within a year.
46:06What do you see
46:07in terms of progression?
46:08I saw a lot of good things myself,
46:10but I still see things
46:11that need work.
46:12I think Nahara
46:13made Elder look good.
46:15Elder's a good fighter,
46:16no doubt about it.
46:17He was the number two amateur
46:18in the country at one point.
46:20One year is unrealistic
46:21in my viewpoint.
46:22He needs a lot more fights
46:23and he needs to raise
46:24the level of his opposition
46:25a little bit slowly,
46:26not all at once.
46:27But convincing in that
46:29this gave him confidence,
46:30rightly, justifiably so,
46:32you think,
46:32this victory,
46:33the way it happened.
46:34Very much so.
46:35Forget the cut.
46:36The important thing
46:37in the big picture
46:38of Ebo Elder
46:39is he got knocked
46:40on his butt
46:40for the first time
46:41as a professional.
46:42These are the kind of tests
46:43young fighters have to pass.
46:44He was hurt
46:45when he first got up.
46:46His legs were rubbery.
46:46That was no flash knockdown.
46:48He answered the bell.
46:49It has been a wild night
46:51here in Tacoma, Washington.
46:52We can tell you that
46:53as we recap
46:55showbox the new generation
46:56for Saturday,
46:58September 29th.
46:59And this is what happened here

47:07First fight,

47:11Good win,
47:11scored a late knockdown,
47:13showed late power,
47:13a fighter to watch.
47:14Ebo Elder there,
47:15you see him in the blonde hair
47:16knocking down
47:18Dagoberto Najero repeatedly
47:19and winning
47:20as this one
47:21they pull the plug on early.
47:22Tough to keep track
47:24of all the knockdowns
47:25in that fight.
47:25The difference,
47:26Elder straight punches.
47:27He was able to land
47:27that left hand all night.
47:29A real good win
47:30for Ebo Elder.
