00:00:03A martial arts world champion, Jones defends his undisputed light heavyweight championship
00:00:08against Australian challenger Glenn Kelly.
00:00:10The other half of the doubleheader is in Redding, Pennsylvania.
00:00:12Let's go to Brand Charles.
00:00:15Thanks, Jim.
00:00:16Larry Merchant, George Foreman, and I will bring you undisputed middleweight champ
00:00:19Bernard Hopkins from his home state of Pennsylvania.
00:00:22Hopkins, Jones, live from two different locations.
00:00:25It's all coming up next on HBO.
00:00:34The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports Network Network, The Champions.
00:00:43Two undisputed world champions.
00:00:46The Lord, Charles, Jr.
00:00:52Defending their titles.
00:00:54Bernard Hopkins, live from two different cities.
00:01:01First up, from Redding, Pennsylvania, master of the middleweight, Bernard Hopkins.
00:01:06And then, from Miami, Florida, right heavyweight king, Roy Jones.
00:01:12Unmatched handspeed and devastated knockout power transformed Jones into Superstar's status of the 90s.
00:01:19Jones gets his vindication via a first-round knockout.
00:01:25People may or may not remember that Roy defeated Bernard in May of 1993.
00:01:31Hopkins resurfaced on Roy's radar stream with his tactical mastermind, the Fields' Trinidad, six months ago.
00:01:39With his knockout victory over Trinity, Hopkins tied for Arnold Sponzo's record, the 14th no-weight title defense.
00:01:47Hopkins imposing his word and his skill on the man who is to match, the left-sert fighter.
00:01:54In final, put the champion on center stage after years of fighting out of the spotlight.
00:02:00Tonight, this is his opportunity to rewrite boxing's record books.
00:02:05It's a special evening of boxing featuring two undisputed champions fighting in two different cities.
00:02:11Bernard Hopkins in Redding, Pennsylvania, and Roy Jones in Miami Sports.
00:02:44And there's a special evening of boxing throughout tribunal.
00:02:53Tonight, a special edition of World Championship Boxing
00:02:56as we bring you two undisputed champions fighting in two different cities.
00:03:01We're live at the Sovereign Center in Redding, Pennsylvania
00:03:03where Bernard Hopkins returns to the ring for the first time
00:03:07since his masterful performance against the O.C. Tinnadaire,
00:03:10taking on Carl Daniels.
00:03:11And then we'll make way for Roy Jones, who is in Miami, Florida,
00:03:15waiting to face Glenn Kelly.
00:03:19We're a little more than an hour drive from Hopkins' native Philadelphia
00:03:23where Bernard seeks a record 15th defense in his middleweight title.
00:03:27But the record is not all that's on Hopkins' mind tonight.
00:03:30He's looking for a possible mega fight with Roy Jones later this year
00:03:34which could surface if both undisputed champions take their decisions tonight.
00:03:42Good evening, I'm Fran Charles and welcome to the Sovereign Center here in Redding, Pennsylvania
00:03:47where tonight undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins
00:03:51will perform in front of a partisan crowd as he takes on top-ranked contender Carl Daniels.
00:03:57But the action will not stop here on this special edition of World Championship Boxing.
00:04:01We will send it live to Miami where undisputed light heavyweight Roy Jones will take on Australian Glenn Kelly.
00:04:09You know, there are so many interesting storylines that surround this showcase.
00:04:14Options have a chance to set the record for most successful middleweight title defenses.
00:04:19Also, which of these two fighters belongs at the top of boxing's pound-for-pound list
00:04:25and will their performance tonight have anything to do with their position?
00:04:30Most importantly, though, are these two fighters riding on a crass course that will collide later this year?
00:04:37Larry Merchant, George Foreman, and myself are here in Redding, Pennsylvania to watch Bernard Hopkins.
00:04:42For more on Roy Jones, let's send it now to Miami and Jim Lampley.
00:04:46All right, friend, thank you very much.
00:04:48As soon as your fight is finished in Redding, we'll bring the audience live here to the American Airlines Arena
00:04:53in Miami
00:04:54to see what Roy Jones does with his latest defense of the light heavyweight championship.
00:04:59And Emmanuel Stewart, if the underlying possibility here is that both undisputed champions get a business done tonight
00:05:05and move forward toward a fight with each other,
00:05:08and given the fact that negotiations for such a fight broke down last year,
00:05:12even before Hopkins blew his star up by winning the middleweight tournament and knocking out Felix Trinidad,
00:05:19what real business chance is there that the fight is going to take place in the near future?
00:05:23I think it's a very good chance that the fight will take place.
00:05:26Speaking to Roy yesterday, he seems to be moving more surprisingly towards former fight,
00:05:30Mitchell Shefsky, possibly in Germany, if certain conditions are met, which probably won't be.
00:05:34But I think based on the way that the movement is going right now and him coming in at 172,
00:05:40I think you're going to see a fight between Hopkins and Roy later on.
00:05:43Probably this year, and it's going to be a very good fight.
00:05:45Now, Roy Jones asserted to us yesterday, Emmanuel, that the fight could never take place
00:05:49unless he gets the lion's share of the money.
00:05:52Hopkins, also an undisputed champion, is a very proud man.
00:05:56How's that going to get cleared up?
00:05:57I think that Roy will get more of the money, and he deserves it.
00:06:01But he's been a star, really, since the 88 Olympics.
00:06:03He's been a brilliant star, and it's unfortunate he's beaten all of the top light heavyweights
00:06:07for the most part out there, and he's fighting fighters who are not up to the caliber that we would
00:06:12like to see.
00:06:12But nevertheless, he deserves that, and I think it's going to be a good fight
00:06:16because even though Roy won the first fight, he really didn't beat him.
00:06:20And a lot of things have changed.
00:06:21Roy said he had his right hand hurt when he fought.
00:06:23Hopkins had very little experience, never been to any Olympics or anything.
00:06:27He was nervous.
00:06:28If they fight again, it would be like a brand-new fight altogether.
00:06:30And Hopkins is a star himself now.
00:06:33So those are the overall big stakes in the evening.
00:06:36The smaller stakes, both fighters trying to defend their undisputed titles
00:06:40and maintain their star-quality images in the sport.
00:06:44Once again, we'll be here in Miami for Jones against Kelly.
00:06:47As soon as you're finished watching the fight in Redding, let's go back to Fran Charles.
00:06:53All right, Jim.
00:06:54You know, for years, the loquacious Bernard Hopkins has been willing to tell anyone and everyone willing to listen
00:07:00that he is one of the best middleweights of all time.
00:07:03Now, the business of boxing has been rough on Bernard, but he's persevered.
00:07:08Hopkins no longer fights in the shadows.
00:07:11Now he stands in the spotlight.
00:07:12And after tonight, his name could go down in the record books.
00:07:17With a victory over Carl Daniels, Bernard Hopkins establishes himself as one of, if not the, greatest middleweight of all
00:07:25time.
00:07:25A win gives him a record 15 successful middleweight title defenses.
00:07:39It all started when Hopkins defeated Segundo Mercado to make it 08 title in April of 1995.
00:07:47Since then, he has defended that title every time he stepped into the ring.
00:08:13Standing in the way of title defense number 14 was Felix Trinidad.
00:08:17And Bernard Hopkins beat Carlos Monzo's record unifying the middleweight division
00:08:22with an interoperative performance of the Madison Square Garden.
00:08:27Absolutely astonishing.
00:08:29Now Bernard Hopkins can so pass Carlos Monzo in boxing's record books.
00:08:35And in doing so, Michael playing his place in boxing history.
00:08:41All right, let's bring in HBO Boxing Analyst and former heavyweight champion George Foreman.
00:08:46George, a lot on Bernard Hopkins' plate tonight.
00:08:49He's thinking about breaking Carlos Monzo's record also.
00:08:53He's fighting in his home state.
00:08:55Is it too much for Bernard to be thinking about coming into a fight with Carl Daniels?
00:09:00I think this is the best way to catch some of these tough fighters.
00:09:03Catch them kind of riding on an emotional high since the turn of that fight.
00:09:08Not thinking about who he's going against someone who may beat him.
00:09:11This is the only way you can beat a Bernard Hopkins.
00:09:13And let me tell you, but he needs something like a record to chase to make it keep motivated.
00:09:18Maybe this motivation position will keep him high.
00:09:22And that's what he needs tonight, to be high.
00:09:24And Daniels is a pesky southpaw.
00:09:26All right, let's bring in HBO Boxing Analyst, Larry Merchant.
00:09:29Larry, over the past 12 months, we've seen Prince Nassim Ahmed, Lennox Lewis, Felix Trinidad,
00:09:34Shane Mosley, all upset, not to mention Mike Tyson being K-O by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
00:09:41Can Carl Daniels do it to Bernard Hopkins if Bernard Hopkins did the Felix Trinidad?
00:09:47Let me use a Pennsylvania Dutch proverb, this being Pennsylvania Dutch company, country.
00:09:53When you dig a ditch for someone else, you may fall in.
00:10:08Carl Daniels is a long, long shot.
00:10:11What he has to do is use his very aggravating style as a southpaw to aggravate Bernard Hopkins
00:10:20into fouling and to squalifying himself.
00:10:23Tie him up in pretzels, Redding pretzels.
00:10:27They make a lot of pretzels in Redding.
00:10:30Also, to perhaps use one of these Pennsylvania Dutch hexes.
00:10:37These hexes decorate barns all over the region.
00:10:41They used to be used to drive off the demons or just bad dudes like Bernard Hopkins.
00:10:48This one is for luck, good luck, double good luck, in fact.
00:10:54So, what Daniels needs are pretzels, hexes, and mixing some punches with them.
00:11:02Absolutely, Larry, and some good luck as well.
00:11:04All right, let's take a look at the tail of the tape for this middleweight championship bout
00:11:08between Carl Daniels and Bernard Hopkins.
00:11:11Hopkins, six years older than Daniels.
00:11:14Hopkins enjoying the height and reach advantage.
00:11:16The first weigh-in number that you see came yesterday at 6 p.m.
00:11:20Both fighters making the 160-pound weight limit.
00:11:23And then the second number you see was this morning at 9.30 a.m.
00:11:27And both fighters gaining just a couple of pounds.
00:11:30All right, now for the rules of the bout, let's send it over to our unofficial ringside scorer,
00:11:35the recently retired longtime judge, Arthur McCancy, Sr.
00:11:39The unified rules are there are no three knockdowns in any given round.
00:11:44Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:11:46The scorecard's after four rounds.
00:11:48What that means is that they go to the scorecard if the fight is stopped after four rounds.
00:11:54And you cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the last round.
00:11:59All right, Arthur.
00:12:00And now it's time to meet the challenger, Carl Daniels.
00:12:05Daniels has been in the fighting game for a long time, over 13 years.
00:12:09He started out as a junior walterweight.
00:12:13He's a former junior middleweight champion.
00:12:16A pesky southpaw, and he says he's game tonight.
00:12:20But Carl Daniels is making $125,000 tonight.
00:12:26Roughly 4% of Bernard Hopkins' $2.8 million.
00:12:32A scandalously low figure.
00:12:35His manager says that he had a handshake agreement with Don King for $800,000.
00:12:44The next thing that he knew, the fight went to a mandatory purse bid,
00:12:50which the manager says was rigged, and he wound up with that $125,000.
00:12:56In addition, he says, Don King would not pay for the transportation of the fighter,
00:13:02which is the regular way these things are done, nor give him any tickets to the fight.
00:13:09This, once again, this shows that a handshake agreement isn't worth the paper it's written on.
00:13:17One thing certainly that can't be questioned is Carl Daniels' commitment fighting for that little of a purse.
00:13:30One.
00:13:32Daniels had almost 180 amateur fights, posting a record of 178.
00:13:40He's a good professional fighter, never beaten anybody on the level of Hopkins.
00:13:49Lost it to Terry Norris ten years ago.
00:13:55The crowd here at the Sovereign Center, getting ready to see the executioner, Bernard Hopkins,
00:14:02the underrated middleweight champion of the world.
00:14:07This is a very nice crowd in this brand new arena.
00:14:12It seems about 9,000 plus for an event like this.
00:14:17Looks like there might be around 7,000 or so.
00:14:22But coming from his great victory in Madison Square Garden, it's like going from Paris to Kabul.
00:14:32It's like Kerry Bradshaw of Sex and the City putting on kids for a heavy day.
00:14:42Hopkins told us yesterday he's not concerned about looking pretty.
00:14:47He's not concerned about the pound-for-pound list.
00:14:50He's only worried about acquiring the W.
00:14:54But in true Bernard Hopkins fashion, he said if gaining the top spot on the pound-for-pound list means
00:15:01more money, then he's all for it.
00:15:04He is dedicating this fight to a former friend and fighter, Stevie Little, who died of cancer recently,
00:15:11and left six children, a wife of six children, and is donating some money to the family.
00:15:31How will the executioner Bernard Hopkins look tonight in his first bout to his first bout,
00:15:38to his upsetting impairments to Trinidad in the middleweight unification series?
00:15:56Hopkins comes into tonight's bout with a record of 40 wins two losses and one draw as you watch

00:20:30to give instructions
00:20:32Touch gloves. Touch gloves.
00:20:36I leave it with you.
00:20:40I got this.
00:20:41Bernard Hopkins says that it's not just winning,
00:20:46it's how he wins.
00:20:47He understands the stakes,
00:20:51because Roy Jones is going to be watching this,
00:20:55and he comes next.
00:20:58Now, this Daniel's got any sweat on his body whatsoever.
00:21:02Hopkins is a little juicy and a little wetness on him,
00:21:05so he stands as possible a quick knockout.
00:21:12Here we go, the beginning of round one.
00:21:16Daniels is...
00:21:21Here we go, the beginning of round one.
00:21:24Daniels is southpaw.
00:21:28Hopkins is a conventional fighter.
00:21:34Bernard told us yesterday his game plan isn't so much about
00:21:40worrying about keeping his outside foot outside of Daniels' lead foot,
00:21:46but rather to take the fight up the middle through Daniels' chest.
00:21:53Stop.
00:21:54Break.
00:21:54Break.
00:21:55Break.
00:21:56Step back.
00:22:01Daniels got to make sure he confuses,
00:22:03make sure that Hopkins think,
00:22:05hey, you're not in the ring with your last opponent.
00:22:08I'm somebody different.
00:22:10Confuse him for at least two or three rounds,
00:22:12and then get wild with him,
00:22:13pick up the pace in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds
00:22:16if he's got that much center.
00:22:19All right, both just stop it.
00:22:21Stop it.
00:22:21Hopkins is going to make certain
00:22:22he doesn't give this guy any extra courage.
00:22:26Make sure he takes the power early.
00:22:30It's worth mentioning,
00:22:33Daniels has not fought since December of 2000.
00:22:37Thirteen-month layoff,
00:22:38second longest of his career.
00:22:43So part of the problem is the first six months
00:22:46for promoter problems.
00:22:49Then he says he's the number one contender.
00:22:51He didn't want to risk getting in the ring with anyone else
00:22:53until he had a shot at Hopkins.
00:22:57Hence, here we are.
00:22:59So far, so good for Daniels.
00:23:02Got Hopkins confused, swinging and missing.
00:23:05Make him go back to his old unorthodox foul
00:23:09and all of that get him confused.
00:23:11You don't want him,
00:23:12he looked like a master boxer the last time.
00:23:14Don't make him look good this time.
00:23:16Daniels comes through with a straight left hand.
00:23:27Let him go, let him go.
00:23:28You're holding him.
00:23:29Let him go.
00:23:49It's not an easy thing to fight in front of your hometown
00:23:51or all of your friends.
00:23:53You want to look good, make yourself look good,
00:23:55and the next thing you know,
00:23:56you're not getting off the canvas.
00:23:58That's for Hopkins in a real strange position in this time.
00:24:02Well, Hopkins told us he knew it was going to be
00:24:06an interesting situation fighting a southpaw.
00:24:14Bernard Hopkins trying to feel his way through here
00:24:17as we come to a close in the first round.
00:24:20If you haven't seen it yet,
00:24:22catch Sunday's replay of Picture Perfect,
00:24:25the stories behind the greatest photos in sports.
00:24:27This documentary takes a look back
00:24:29to the golden era of sports photography.
00:24:46Keep the pressure on it, son.
00:24:48If you get close to him, make him move.
00:24:50Make him walk.
00:24:51Keep the move.
00:24:52Keep the move.
00:24:54You can do it.
00:25:03There's a 2.
00:25:04Carl Daniels says that he shadow boxed with Roy Jones
00:25:10when he was an alternate on the 1988 Olympic team.
00:25:15He gets a pretty good shadow boxing in that first round,
00:25:18George.
00:25:20That's what you want to do if you're Daniels.
00:25:22Keep this thing so unorthodox,
00:25:23so you can unnerve Bernard Hopkins.
00:25:26Don't let him hit you with anything.
00:25:28Make him miss a lot.
00:25:29Then you got to fight on your hands.
00:25:31Ah, kick him up, kick him up, man.
00:25:33Hopkins, a looping left foot.
00:25:36Then he came back with a low right uppercut.
00:25:40That's the Hopkins you want.
00:25:42Make him start fouling.
00:25:43Show exactly who he is.
00:25:45Don't make him look good.
00:25:46Then he'll get desperate, and you can do something.
00:25:54All right, stop, stop, step back, step back.
00:25:56And you say show exactly who he is, George.
00:25:59What exactly do you mean?
00:26:01Throughout his whole career, he's not been a master boxer.
00:26:03He's been a guy who likes to hit below the belt,
00:26:06hit behind the back, things of that nature.
00:26:08Bring that out of him, and then you can bring him back to the reality.
00:26:11Look, you're not a master boxer.
00:26:14Make him start slugging, then you outpoint him.
00:26:16Then go for a knockout in the last two or three rounds,
00:26:18if you're still around.
00:26:20That's what Daniel is going to have to do.
00:26:21And so far, he's done a good job.
00:26:24Make and miss.
00:26:27Hopkins comes through with a right uppercut.
00:26:29The two exchanging power punches at close range.
00:26:36Hopkins going to work at the bottom of Carl Daniels.
00:26:41The pace picking up here in the middle of the second round.
00:26:51I know Hopkins would like to look good, as he did in his last fight.
00:26:57But some guys don't like to look good, right?
00:26:59That's what you want to do.
00:27:00Be the kind of guy who does not make him look good.
00:27:03Make him look raggedy, and then every time he misses,
00:27:05you hit him with two or three shots.
00:27:07Maybe the judges will pick up on him.
00:27:09Come on, come on, come on.
00:27:11Come on, come on, come on.
00:27:11Come on, come on.
00:27:12Come on, come on.
00:27:12Come on, come on.
00:27:13Daniels pokes a right uppercut.
00:27:22Hopkins catching Daniels with a counter, left hook to the head.
00:27:28Daniels pokes a right uppercut.
00:27:35Daniels pokes a right uppercut.
00:27:39Daniels pokes a right uppercut.
00:27:59Keep in mind tonight, it's a very special night of boxing here on HBO.
00:28:03A rare opportunity to see two undisputed champions back-to-back.
00:28:09Right now, let's head down to Miami and Jim Lample.
00:28:14All right, Fran, while you cover the fight in Reading, Pennsylvania,
00:28:18we're here in the American Airlines Arena,
00:28:21where later this evening, undisputed light heavyweight champion Roy Jones
00:28:25will strut his stuff once again in a mandatory title defense
00:28:30against Glenn Kelly of Australia.
00:28:33It's been a tumultuous week for Jones, who has unveiled a new rap song.
00:28:38And meanwhile, if you miss the premiere,
00:28:40catch a replay of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel with the Super Bowl tomorrow.
00:28:43What better time to look at sportsbooks and gambling?
00:28:46We'll go behind the scenes to reveal the factors considered
00:28:48in setting the line for major sports events.
00:28:51And incidentally, the Rams remain 14-point favorites in New Orleans.
00:28:55Real Sports, where nothing is out of bounds.
00:28:59So from Miami, let's go back to the Pennsylvania Dutch country.
00:29:04Two undisputed champions performing on the same evening
00:29:07in separate venues back to Reading.
00:29:13Daniels brought in Tommy Brooks
00:29:16to train him for this fight.
00:29:18Tommy Brooks was formerly with Mike Tyson,
00:29:21Pernell Whitaker, Vander Holyfield.
00:29:24One of the top guys out there.
00:29:28CompuBox power shots through two rounds.
00:29:32Hopkins starting to heat up.
00:29:3322 of 54, 41 percent.
00:29:35Daniels, 11 of 25, and a 44 percent clip.
00:29:40Step back.
00:29:40Good, good.
00:29:41Now that's what I want.
00:29:46Daniel is starting to be the aggressor.
00:29:52He's still making a Hopkins miss.
00:29:54The only thing is, he's got to hit him with something.
00:29:57Once he makes a miss.
00:30:01Not seeing enough from a counter perspective.
00:30:04No.
00:30:04It would be a brighter day for him
00:30:06if he can make certain that he makes Hopkins pay for every miss.
00:30:14Hard shot to the body.
00:30:16And the two now trying to exchange blows of course range.
00:30:23Daniel was able to sneak in a couple that time.
00:30:27Hopkins sneaking some in as well.
00:30:31No, no, no, no.
00:30:33Stop, stop.
00:30:35Stop.
00:30:38Stop.
00:30:39Left and right jail by Daniel.
00:30:41Right in there between the defense of Hopkins.
00:30:45Hopkins is doing a good job of going to the body
00:30:47to make certain that this guy gets weaker every round.
00:30:49That's the only good thing he's doing so far in my book.
00:31:05Look at me, buddy.
00:31:06Look at me, buddy.
00:31:07Look at me.
00:31:08Look at me.
00:31:08Look at me.
00:31:09Look at me.
00:31:09Hopkins delivers a left hook to the body
00:31:11and Daniels comes right back poking through Hopkins' defense.
00:31:15They are in close.
00:31:18Hopkins really doing a good job on the body
00:31:21since he's having trouble reaching the head so far.
00:31:25What a good throw will do.
00:31:31Straight through the defense of Carl Daniels comes Bernard Hopkins.
00:31:36Straight through the defense of Carl Daniels comes Bernard Hopkins.
00:31:57middle of the ring and not defend himself. He's got to be moving or punching at all times.
00:32:03Daniels and Hopkins. Explosive here to end the third round. Daniels showing some heart.
00:32:18The crowd comes alive. It's a little too far away. It's a little too far away. It slows
00:32:25in a little bit. Get a little closer. Get unloaded. All right, Ben? You're too far away. Get a little
00:32:37closer. Then you're unloaded. Inside, make him walk. You've got to make him walk. Don't let him try to
00:32:44rest on top of you. All right? That was beautiful when you ended up in that round. Okay? You need
00:32:51more now. Give me more now. How do you feel? Good. Good. Beautiful work. Hey, look. Despite the perceived
00:33:01pressure to perform sensationally, Hopkins showing poise and patience, just fighting the man in front
00:33:10of him, going to the body. And sometimes just a little under the body. All right, let's bring in
00:33:24unofficial ringside scorer Arthur McCanty-Singer to see how he has it scored through three. I haven't,
00:33:30uh, I haven't scored 30 to 27 after, uh, after the third. And, um, Hopkins, uh, is, is, is a
00:33:38better
00:33:38in the exchange on the inside as I see it. And a very, very, very powerful punch it with that
00:33:44right cross. And there you saw evidence of that right cross. Busting right through the defense
00:33:49of Carl Daniels. And now Frank Tappuccino warning both fighters, keep it clean. Uh, Larry McCanty
00:33:56scored it two rounds to one for Hopkins. I gave the first to the challenger. I think
00:34:02the challenger did squeeze out some, a round two, but he did so much better that last round
00:34:07because he was able to make Hopkins miss, as I've been saying all night, and then counter
00:34:11and hit him with something.
00:34:20You heard Bowie Fisher Hopkins trainer in between rounds. Hopkins ripped the left hook to the
00:34:26hand of Carl Daniels. And when, when Hopkins jumped on him, he jumped right into a good
00:34:36straight right hand as well.
00:34:42Bowie Fisher telling Hopkins you're too far away, getting close. And Bernard listening to
00:34:48his long time trainer for 13 years. Hopkins is going for power now. He's throwing one or
00:34:55two shots at a time. He's taking his time to aim good.
00:35:02No no no stop, stop. Stop, stop, stop, stop.
00:35:11Make it work.
00:35:16Daniel once again is standing there, he's not moving his feet nor his head. Can't do that
00:35:21with Hopkins, you gotta move something at all times. Hard throw punches. Daniel's not doing
00:35:27either george do you believe those body shots from hopkins are starting to have an effect on
00:35:38daniel prudence no doubt about it you've been able to put those body punches in there but look
00:35:43you've been in training for six weeks nothing wrong with getting somebody shots
00:36:05Bernard hopkins using the left hook this evening pretty much at will
00:36:22he is the champion you gotta beat him beyond reasonable doubt so he and you gotta pick it up son
00:36:27hey your boxing gun but you're not throwing up punching no i ain't gonna lie to you baby
00:36:32hey it's coming it's coming i ain't gonna lie to you okay you have to work harder
00:36:42that belly hiding under them trucks bring it out hit my legs hit my legs not my head
00:36:48all right baby i'm talking
00:36:52i see my back
00:36:58hopkins are getting the measure now with that quick
00:37:03half cross half jab half hook that he tends to throw
00:37:15instructions from daniel's corner you're doing everything right you're just not throwing enough
00:37:21punches so he's not doing everything right very hard to accommodate a guy when he's hitting you
00:37:27with that kind of power hopkins is landing some body shots that make you afraid to throw shots
00:37:33george speaking of power according to compu box hopkins landed 64 of those power shots in the fourth round
00:37:4116 of 25
00:37:44how those shots were in that body that's where it really counts takes your power away makes your legs weak
00:37:52and it gets you kind of scared to stand in front of him and hit him with anything
00:37:59daniel's not where he wants to be in the corner and he wisely ties up and gets out
00:38:05let him go let him go carl let him out let him out
00:38:09okay
00:38:13hopkins two right hands slapping to the head and the body
00:38:23if you're daniel under no circumstances do you want to get into these exchanges
00:38:29don't exchange shots do what you're going to do and get out of there if you're daniel
00:38:39daniel's is trying to move but it seems that
00:38:43he seems to stop right in front of hopkins he moves around and then stops and that's when
00:38:47hopkins takes advantage and teams off that's what happens when you get so many body shots
00:38:51early in a fight you just can't get away when you want to
00:39:00daniel told him to come on man
00:39:02i don't think he meant that
00:39:12but all hopkins continuing to burn the body and fire off power shot at the power shot and this is
00:39:21hopkins' fight right now in close
00:39:28daniel's
00:39:29beautiful straight left hand from carl daniel's
00:39:55there's a smirk on the face of bernard hopkins he thinks he has daniel's hurting her body
00:40:01and set up for a spectacular finish somewhere around the way
00:40:08well one undisputed champion is performing very strongly on this very special night of world championship boxing
00:40:16let's send it down now to jim lampley in miami to check in on white heavyweight champ roy jones
00:40:22a beautiful warm night in the magic city of miami and while the city celebrates its saturday night
00:40:30roy jones sits in his dressing room and watches the combat in redding pennsylvania and shows you
00:40:35his opinion of the daniel's hopkins fight as he waits his turn on hbo
00:40:41they take on glenn kelly the australian challenger for jones's light heavyweight crown
00:40:47ever comfortable in the spotlight roy jones as he watches in miami and we take you back
00:40:54for more of the middleweight action in redding
00:40:58two undisputed champions on the same night on hbo
00:41:17bernard hopkins relying for the most part solely on power punches 28 of 43 in round five 65 percent
00:41:28and daniel's output slowing down six of 18
00:41:42a whole lot less clinching in this fight and i thought there might be george
00:41:48daniel understandably was trying to get out of the way he doesn't really want to stand and help with
00:41:53this guy problem is you get out of the way and don't throw shots that's going to give
00:41:57hopkins more courage to come after you with harder shots
00:42:01maybe clinton made a better strategy for him
00:42:13now hopkins is showing no fear
00:42:16stand straight turn the hook
00:42:17properly like you're teaching a class of boxing
00:42:23what about this point george benard hopkins has fought
00:42:26for the most part his entire career as a middleweight
00:42:31carl daniels started out as a junior walterweight this is only his 11th fight as a middleweight
00:42:38does that have an effect on his power
00:42:40i don't think any of that have any effects we saw with trinx trinidad move up and up
00:42:45power as he went up
00:42:51hopkins got him following him around now without moving his head
00:42:55falling to trap so daniel he's got to do something quick
00:42:58you don't want to follow punch around and not move your head or your feet
00:43:05this is where hopkins is at his best when you follow him a little bit
00:43:09not doing anything
00:43:20big shots here in the middle of the ring in the sixth round
00:43:35give carl daniels this he did not just come here to survive
00:43:40oh he's taking some hard shots and he's trying his best to get in with one or two more
00:43:47as you can see now he's trying to hide his body
00:43:51those hard body shots are starting to pay dividends
00:44:01hopkins continues to work the right midsection of carl daniels with his left hook
00:44:09daniels fights through though for the quick one too
00:44:20this is
00:44:21you magnificent fencing up the round height
00:44:23baby get close
00:44:25get close
00:44:28nah he sat there
00:44:29yes sir go with your body go in that body
00:44:32go in that body
00:44:37big
00:44:38pretty deep i want that baby
00:44:40When you're on the inside, when you're just trying to tie you up, let that stuff go, baby.
00:44:47Hey, look.
00:44:49Just a seventh round.
00:44:52Keep him up, Bernard.
00:44:55Be in trouble, you know.
00:45:01You may see there is a big welt along the left eye
00:45:09of Hopkins.
00:45:10Doesn't look dangerous at this point.
00:45:24All right, six of the scheduled 12 rounds are in the books.
00:45:28Let's bring in Arthur McCanty Sr. to see how he has the fight score.
00:45:31I have the score of Hopkins
00:45:35by a score of 60 to 54 in favor of Hopkins.
00:45:39Daniels is mainly on the defense,
00:45:41and he's getting trapped in the corners too much,
00:45:44and that's a very, very dangerous place for fighters to be.
00:45:47Come on, come on.
00:45:50Come on.
00:45:51I don't need something.
00:45:53I think it's a wonderful thing that Daniels has got Hopkins
00:45:56thinking about maybe the side of his face now.
00:45:59If he can just tap it a few times,
00:46:01he can change things just a little bit,
00:46:03not a whole lot.
00:46:09He better get there quick
00:46:13because Hopkins is still on the offensive attack.
00:46:25The thing about fighting the softball,
00:46:27you got to make sure you keep your head out of the way.
00:46:29These headbutts can really get messed up things
00:46:32a lot more than even a punch.
00:46:34There's a lot of sound to it,
00:46:36but not a lot of power
00:46:36because he made it a looping shot.
00:46:38Hopkins did.
00:46:40Daniels was able to get his defense up.
00:46:47But on Hopkins,
00:46:48simply quicker to the punch all night long.
00:47:02Now Daniels is starting to look at the side of Hopkins' head,
00:47:06trying to land a shot on that little sore spot.
00:47:11He's got to lead with his left
00:47:13and just throw the old right hook.
00:47:16All right, stop, stop.
00:47:18Break.
00:47:19Step back, step back, step back, Leonard.
00:47:23But George, should he be so concerned with that?
00:47:26Oh, you've got to have some out of his game plan.
00:47:28He's got to have something now to concern himself with.
00:47:30He hasn't had anything else to give him
00:47:32any kind of courage, any kind of confidence.
00:47:34That's the only thing he has.
00:47:36I think he should center in on him.
00:47:40Right, left.
00:47:54Right, left.
00:48:01A packed crowd here at the Sovereign Center
00:48:04certainly getting their money's worth
00:48:07as Bernard Hopkins and Carl Daniels
00:48:10trade big shots at close range.
00:48:20I don't know.
00:48:21But actually, just left me.
00:48:23It's amazing money.
00:48:28No doubt.
00:48:29You're going to clip anywhere.
00:48:37Come back.
00:48:39Come back.
00:48:41Look over.
00:48:44How do you feel, baby?
00:48:46How do you feel?
00:48:46How do you feel?
00:48:48You know what I'm saying? You got to make it a fight now, brother.
00:48:54Because you're behind, baby.
00:48:56I ain't gonna lie to you. You're behind.
00:48:57You got to knock your sucker out the wind, brother.
00:49:00You're in his home.
00:49:01He's done all he can do.
00:49:03Come on, let's go get him.
00:49:05Let's go, Daniels!
00:49:07Let's go, Daniels!
00:49:11Here's where we find out whether Daniels has already conceded the win,
00:49:17or is he gonna really try to hurt Hopkins
00:49:21and perhaps give himself a chance?
00:49:26Well, you heard Daniels' trainer Tommy Brooks say,
00:49:29I'm not gonna lie to you, you're behind,
00:49:31especially being in his hometown.
00:49:33Now you have to make it a fight.
00:49:37I told him he's gonna have to take Hopkins out.
00:49:39That's probably the only opportunity
00:49:42that Hopkins would need
00:49:43if him start trying to get a little aggressive.
00:49:45He'll clean him out.
00:49:47He's in an awkward position now.
00:49:49A boxer.
00:49:50Not much of a...whoa!
00:49:51But he catches Hopkins there.
00:49:54Two shots to the head.
00:49:56.
00:50:11Scott Daniels keeps his eyes right on Hopper, as though he's looking for something.
00:50:21Step back, step back, step back.
00:50:31Step back, step back, step back, step back, step back, step back, step back, step back,
00:50:43Hopkins unleashing a straight right hand.
00:50:48There we go, keep pushing, keep pushing.
00:50:57Daniel is trying to find himself in the pocket of Hopper.
00:51:02It's a little close.
00:51:04Looks like he's just sitting his defense, but he's not.
00:51:06He is trying to drive in some kind of up-to-cut with a left hand.
00:51:13But at what point, George, does Carl Daniels even become more happy?
00:51:18I think that he's conceited that kid report now.
00:51:20He's just looking for one shot.
00:51:23There it is, one.
00:51:24All night, he's got his eye looking at that shot.
00:51:28Nate Hopkins missed there.
00:51:29He came back with a counter, straight left.
00:51:32He's got his eye looking for him.
00:51:35He's got his eye looking for him.
00:51:36He's got his eye looking for him.
00:51:36Yeah, he's got his eye looking for him.
00:51:38Stop, stop, step back, step back, step back.
00:51:41Come, come, come, come, come, come, come.
00:51:44You gotta be careful when you're fighting a guy like Daniels
00:51:46who fights with his eyes, watching everything.
00:51:55my turn my turn my turn my turn my turn fellas
00:52:01undisputed middleweight champion bernard hopkins in complete control here

00:53:10hard crisp right shot to the body by bernard hopkins
00:53:15hopkins not letting him out makes him pay for every step
00:53:20total punches from compubox punch stats hopkins more than doubling daniels output

00:57:08i find that daniels is fighting a very defensive fight
00:57:11and is being allowed to be caught in the corners
00:57:13which is a highly highly dangerous position to be in
00:57:16so i have the score at present 90 to 80
00:57:22now hopkins starting to use his left jab a little bit
00:57:29hopkins keeps his hands up
00:57:33though he's in control
00:57:34still not getting too awkward
00:57:35dropping his hands too much
00:57:38back to the basics
00:57:41benorah hopkins has been a far serious successful fighter
00:57:45his entire career
00:57:48but just now starting to get
00:57:52under the limelight
00:57:53his first million dollar pay it
00:57:55was against keith holmes
00:57:58hopkins says it doesn't matter
00:57:59he's been saving his money all along
00:58:01he told us yesterday
00:58:02he's just started tipping at restaurants
00:58:05i'd like to see him
00:58:06ask a delahoyer that's what i'd like to see
00:58:09waiters and waitresses he used to run
00:58:11when bernard came into the restaurant
00:58:29the good thing about this hopkins has deserted all of his bad tactics
00:58:34he's really fighting a clean boxing match
00:58:36it really is
00:58:37we thought there was potential for
00:58:41some dirty antics just from the standpoint of the difficulties and the styles
00:58:46slicks out
00:58:50he's been true to form there
00:58:51he's fighting like a real champion
00:58:54throwing left hand
00:58:55jab going underneath with hooks
00:58:57straight right hand
00:58:59lead right hand
00:59:00dip hooks everything you want
00:59:02pitch your book fighter tonight
00:59:06displaying both
00:59:07quickness and power
00:59:08stands on his
00:59:11pocket
00:59:12what impresses me is that here he is at the age of 37
00:59:17i knew it was coming
00:59:18i knew it was coming
00:59:20just turned 37
00:59:20i knew it
00:59:22and still has the motivation to get into
00:59:25supreme condition
00:59:27every time

00:59:40undisputed light heavyweight Roy Jones is no longer watching
00:59:44but he might want to take a peek
00:59:45but aren't Hopkins is serious
00:59:47let's send it down to Jim Ramsey in Miami on this special night of HBO Boxing
00:59:52and we bring you back to the American Airlines Arena to remind you once again that in moments now you'll
00:59:58be seeing that man
00:59:59Sydney Australia sanitation worker Glenn Kelly the latest in the long line of relatively anonymous challengers for Roy Jones Jr's
01:00:08undisputed light heavyweight crown as always the spotlight is on Jones the expectation is for an easy Roy Jones victory
01:00:15we'll see if that's what happens when we come back down here for the second half of our two undisputed
01:00:22champions doubleheader back to Redick
01:00:25the referee Frank Cappuccino is waving the fight off
01:00:30the fight is over
01:00:33Carl Daniels
01:00:34Carl Daniels corner elected not to go on
01:00:38those body shots were breaking him in half
01:00:42and there was no way this guy Daniel has no power to pull it out
01:00:46in the latter rounds
01:00:47it was a merciful decision
01:00:49you know he told us George that his mother told him he is a great great grandson of Joe Lewis
01:00:58is that something
01:01:00judging by how he fights I would have to question that genealogy
01:01:07he got put on a good shot he just didn't have the punching power to keep up Bernard Hopkins off
01:01:12of it
01:01:12you're right
01:01:13he fought every minute
01:01:25let's take a listen in to see exactly what happened
01:01:39there you saw it Carl Daniels shook his head
01:01:42Tommy Brooks asked him how he felt and he simply shook his head
01:01:46no
01:01:47Tommy Brooks merciful guy because he's seen this guy really taking a big bad beating from Bernard Hopkins
01:01:53and it wasn't going to get any better
01:01:55I don't know if I would quit but
01:01:58job of the corner to say I don't want anymore
01:02:00but it was a merciful thing to do
01:02:02he wasn't going to get any better
01:02:03probably he was going to get the worst of it
01:02:06all right George and now for the official decision let's send it into the ring
01:02:11Jimmy Lennon Jr.
01:02:15ladies and gentlemen upon advice of the corner
01:02:18this bout has been stopped by a referee in charge
01:02:22Frank Cappuccino at the end of round number 10
01:02:26the winner by way of technical knockout
01:02:29and still the undisputed middleweight champion of the world
01:02:35Bernard the executioner
01:02:38Hopkins
01:02:56so Bernard Hopkins
01:02:59remains the undisputed middleweight champion
01:03:03and he did in impressive fashion
01:03:05let's take a look at the final punch stat numbers
01:03:07here's Hopkins
01:03:09more than doubling Daniels
01:03:12landed output
01:03:13landing at a 45% rate
01:03:15Daniels at 38% but throwing just 249 punches
01:03:18and here's where Bernard Hopkins won this fight
01:03:22power shot after power shot to the body
01:03:24199
01:03:27nearly four times more shots landed by Hopkins than Daniels
01:03:32landing at a 56% clip
01:03:35very impressive
01:03:38Larry Merchant is standing by with the winner
01:03:41undisputed middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins
01:03:45all right thank you very much
01:03:47Bernard congratulations
01:03:50what is your feeling about
01:03:54setting a new record
01:03:56for successful middleweight championship defenses
01:04:00it's great Larry
01:04:01it's great it's great
01:04:02because no one can take that away from me
01:04:04my daughter
01:04:05which is three years old
01:04:05can remember that when she's 18
01:04:07when people get to talk about her father
01:04:08but first I'd like to thank Roni Palis
01:04:10goldenpalis.com
01:04:11and Roni Palis for sponsorship
01:04:13we don't do commercials here
01:04:14but they already paid me
01:04:15the check is in the bank
01:04:16well that's their problem
01:04:17not ours
01:04:18but I'd like to thank them
01:04:20you were facing a slick cute southpaw
01:04:23you've seen a few hundred of them along the way
01:04:27was there anything different about this
01:04:30how did you go about it
01:04:31well I went about it the same way
01:04:32they tried to store my will on Carl Daniels
01:04:35but he was tricky
01:04:36I mean southpaws are tricky
01:04:37and you know Larry I don't know how I look
01:04:39until I watch the tape
01:04:40but I never really look tremendous with southpaws
01:04:42because he really didn't come to the fight
01:04:43as far as exchanging
01:04:45but you know hopefully I don't have to see another southpaw no time soon
01:04:47alright it seems that you decided early on
01:04:50you better break them down to the body systematically
01:04:53let's take a look at a lot of those body punches
01:04:56and tell us about them
01:04:58well I was out too far a little bit on some of the body shots
01:05:01but I wanted to keep digging right there
01:05:03the left hook to the body I worked and camped with it
01:05:05and wear him down
01:05:06because I know he was a mover
01:05:07and he covered his face up pretty good
01:05:08and he gives you the body
01:05:10because he didn't want to get hit upstairs
01:05:11so I kept throwing left hooks to the body
01:05:12and hopefully you know put money in the bank
01:05:14and get him later on
01:05:15do you think that this
01:05:18Golden Palace
01:05:18do you think that this performance
01:05:21is the kind of performance
01:05:23that will stand out enough for
01:05:27the boxing media, the boxing public
01:05:30to put you on top of the rankings of pound for pound fighters
01:05:35to demand a rematch and showdown with Roy Jones
01:05:40as long as I'm a threat
01:05:41that's all that matters to me
01:05:42and you know what
01:05:43I believe Vernon Forrest
01:05:44my good friend who beat Shane Mosley
01:05:46who most media had in front of me
01:05:47should get the number one spot
01:05:49but you know what
01:05:49I like this Larry
01:05:51whatever the public demands
01:05:53they can have
01:05:54I want RJ, Roy Jones
01:05:55pig raising, turtle raising
01:05:57whatever he is
01:05:57that's who I want to beat Larry
01:05:59but if they want to give me pound for pound
01:06:00or pound for two
01:06:01or pound for one
01:06:01great
01:06:01come on with it
01:06:03alright
01:06:04let's talk about
01:06:06the possible rematch showdown
01:06:09there are two aspects
01:06:11one is the money
01:06:12Roy has stated
01:06:13his light heavyweight championship
01:06:15is on the line
01:06:16he's been a star
01:06:17for a lot of years
01:06:19he thinks he deserves more money
01:06:21what is your response to that?
01:06:23well Roy Jones
01:06:23Roy Jones has been eating a little bit more
01:06:25than that much dog food
01:06:26that he's been feeding his pit bulls
01:06:27down in Pensacola
01:06:28and is starting to show on his brain
01:06:30Roy Jones haven't done lately in the world
01:06:32of boxing
01:06:32to even consider himself pound for pound
01:06:35or even a superstar
01:06:36now Roy Jones Jr. can't expect
01:06:38to get more than Bernard Hopkins
01:06:40after the tournament
01:06:41alright
01:06:41let's talk to you down there
01:06:43Roy
01:06:43Roy give us your response
01:06:45to what you're hearing up here
01:06:47sound like two cats
01:06:49that really don't know what the hell
01:06:50they're talking about to me
01:06:53did you hear me?
01:06:55yes I can hear you Roy
01:06:56I said sound like two cats
01:06:57that don't have an idea
01:06:58what the hell they're talking about to me
01:07:02so
01:07:03your stat
01:07:04your
01:07:05Roy
01:07:06when you say
01:07:07you feel
01:07:08you have earned
01:07:09the right
01:07:10to
01:07:11have
01:07:12the bigger share
01:07:13of whatever pot there is
01:07:16you're going to stand by that
01:07:18is that what you're telling us?
01:07:20you damn right
01:07:23alright
01:07:23well that's a major problem already Larry
01:07:26and he's setting the stage right now
01:07:27the only person who can stop this Larry
01:07:29is Ross Greenberg
01:07:30and the people at HBO
01:07:31because I'm going to force Roy
01:07:32to get out of boxing
01:07:33or I'm going to expose him
01:07:34as a hypocrite to everybody
01:07:35yeah you do that for me
01:07:36that would be very nice
01:07:38and you probably should take some good English passes
01:07:40I'm ready
01:07:40I'm ready
01:07:41hey Roy you thought I'd be gone by now
01:07:43but you know what
01:07:43it's been since 93 baby
01:07:45and beating Trinidad forced you to fight me
01:07:47you didn't want Trinidad to fight me
01:07:48because you wanted an easy fight
01:07:49but I'm going to tell you Roy
01:07:50I ain't going nowhere
01:07:51I ain't going nowhere unless I get assassinated
01:07:53I am not going nowhere unless I get assassinated
01:07:55where did I think he was going
01:07:56alright let's
01:07:57hey Roy
01:07:58hey
01:07:58only thing you got to do is tell the world right now
01:08:00that the best pound for pound fighters
01:08:02undisputed are going to fight each other
01:08:04at a reasonable reasonable catch weight
01:08:06and we'll split 50-50 down the middle
01:08:08and let's do the fight by June
01:08:09come on Roy
01:08:10time to pit up and shut up
01:08:11how are we going to split 50-50
01:08:12I beat you one time
01:08:12alright let's go to that
01:08:14Roy
01:08:15let's talk about reasonable catch weight
01:08:17uh
01:08:18he
01:08:19uh
01:08:20Bernard weighed 158 for this fight
01:08:23he's averaged around 158 for his last 4 or 5 fights
01:08:26you weighed 172
01:08:29you've averaged around 173 for your last 4 or 5 fights
01:08:34can you cut the difference in the half
01:08:36you move down around 7 pounds
01:08:38he moves up around 7
01:08:40or
01:08:40do you demand some other kind of catch weight
01:08:43you know what
01:08:44right now you know
01:08:45it's like
01:08:46I got a guy here in front of me
01:08:47that I ain't looking past right now
01:08:49that's 6 pounds heavier than me right now
01:08:51I'm really too big for Bernard Hopkins
01:08:53I beat Bernard Hopkins before with one hand
01:08:55I mean you know
01:08:55whatever I can do that's feasible
01:08:57that
01:08:57with the way that I can make
01:08:58I'll fight it
01:08:59you know what I'm saying
01:08:59it's not like that
01:09:00with me it's just that
01:09:01y'all try to beat the game
01:09:03like
01:09:04he beat one fighter
01:09:05that has a name
01:09:06one fighter
01:09:07one fighter that has a name
01:09:08and that's it
01:09:09you just said
01:09:10after that
01:09:10what else is happening
01:09:11what else is happening after that
01:09:13you just said
01:09:14that's the hypocrite about you
01:09:16you just said this now
01:09:17to every
01:09:18to the whole wide world
01:09:19that you're bigger than
01:09:20you just said right now
01:09:22to the whole wide world
01:09:22that you're bigger than me
01:09:24and so
01:09:25while you're being bigger than me
01:09:26that should make it
01:09:27easy for you to want to fight me
01:09:28you know
01:09:29at the end of the day
01:09:31Roy and Bernard
01:09:33I'm bigger than me
01:09:33this is going to happen
01:09:34I don't want to fight you
01:09:35this is going to happen
01:09:37most of you
01:09:37want to make it happen
01:09:40regardless
01:09:41and find a way to make it happen
01:09:42right split your ass is tough
01:09:43you know I don't give a damn
01:09:44about no fight
01:09:45talk is cheap
01:09:46talk is cheap
01:09:47talk is cheap Roy
01:09:48you want to trap me for my title
01:09:50who I am
01:09:50you want to trap me for my title
01:09:5164 you get your ass kicked
01:09:5364 you get your ass kicked

01:10:09good luck in Miami back to ringside all right Larry George I don't know about
01:10:16you but after hearing that I'm ready to see this fight right now no no doubt
01:10:20about it it'd be a really beautiful fight I think that those guys should
01:10:23split the purse and get it on we saw Bernard Hopkins tonight systematically
01:10:28break down Carl Daniels with those power shots to the body
